Likewise, rates of evolution were equivalent between island anoles that arose via in situ versus dispersal-based mechanisms, and we found no evidence for island-specific rates of speciation or morphological evolution. Principal component and linear discriminant analyses suggested that the elongate fish species can be distinguished from one another by their material properties, morphology, and swimming kinematics. At the end of the first decade of the 21st century, a paper in this journal provoked active debate about the paediatric flatfoot as part of development, and proposed a considered titration of presenting cases in effort to justify treatment and appreciated the range and expected change in normal foot posture with growth. A decade later, the availability of normative paediatric foot posture data, and the prospective findings to confirm lessening flatfeet with age, encourage a structured and considered approach to this frequent primary care presentation. The pragmatic concept of the boomerang is built upon the research identifying the paediatric flatfeet likely to be symptomatic, thus requiring intervention, and filtering from those likely to remain asymptomatic. Differential diagnoses are advisedly considered, and gait remains the hallmark outcome. In this contemporary guide, an eight step strategy has been developed to improve the approach to community paediatric flatfeet concerns. Further, the three 'boomerang' flatfeet factors delineating symptomatic from asymptomatic flatfeet, and applicable cut-off levels, are availed for practical reference and use. Given the recognised state of overdiagnoses and resulting unnecessary treatment that pervades the 21st century, it is timely for clear '2020' vision for the presentation of the paediatric flatfoot.Bio-based production of industrially important chemicals and materials from non-edible and renewable biomass has become increasingly important to resolve the urgent worldwide issues including climate change. Also, bio-based production, instead of chemical synthesis, of food ingredients and natural products has gained ever increasing interest for health benefits. Systems metabolic engineering allows more efficient development of microbial cell factories capable of sustainable, green, and human-friendly production of diverse chemicals and materials. Escherichia coli is unarguably the most widely employed host strain for the bio-based production of chemicals and materials. In the present paper, we review the tools and strategies employed for systems metabolic engineering of E. coli. Next, representative examples and strategies for the production of chemicals including biofuels, bulk and specialty chemicals, and natural products are discussed, followed by discussion on materials including polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs), proteins, and nanomaterials.

  • w provides pointers for overcoming methodological problems and opens up new avenues for giftedness research.A previous editorial by the Editor-in-Chief discusses public health and steps towards recovery from the COVID-19 disaster.1 In addition to the current public health disasters, and multiple disasters such as earthquakes, typhoons and hurricanes, worldwide recession, and global morbidity and mortality, the authors would like to highlight the need for responses to deal with the well-being of the homeless population due to their condition and vulnerability in the society. People who are experiencing homelessness are considered vulnerable and "preferential options for the homeless" must be considered.
    The presence of excessive mirror overflow in children with Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is discussed in numerous published reports. These reports, however, include a limited age range in their samples. The objective of this study is to examine the effects of diagnosis and sex on mirror overflow and standard deviation (SD) of tap time in children with and without ADHD across a larger age range (5-12 years) of children.

    One-hundred and forty-eight children with ADHD and 112 age- and sex-matched typically developing (TD) children completed a finger sequencing task. Mirror overflow, SD of tap time, and mean tap time were measured using finger twitch transducers.

    Results reveal a significant diagnostic effect on mirror overflow such that boys and girls with ADHD demonstrate increased overflow compared to same-sex TD children. Boys with ADHD demonstrated more variable tap times compared to TD boys; no diagnostic effect was observed in the girls.

    Boys with ADHD exhibit anomalous motor variata would provide a greater understanding of the trajectory of anomalous mirror overflow across development. Examination of functional and structural connectivity would expand the current understanding of the neurobiological foundation of motor overflow.
    To evaluate whether a brief training using a Mentalization-Based Treatment (MBT) model improves attitudes of trainee psychiatrists working with patients with personality disorder. Trainee psychiatrists (n = 49) completed the Attitudes to Personality Disorder Questionnaire before and after a training consisting of two 3 h lectures on (a) theory of personality disorder and (b) practical skills using an MBT role-play.

    There was a significant improvement on composite scores of attitude, with small to moderate effect size (Wilcoxon signed-rank test Z = 3.961, P < 0.001, r = 0.40).

    Post-traumatic amnesia (PTA) is a transient period of recovery following traumatic brain injury (TBI) characterised by disorientation, amnesia, and cognitive disturbance. https://www.selleckchem.com/products/E7080.html Agitation is common during PTA and presents as a barrier to patient outcome. A relationship between cognitive impairment and agitation has been observed. This prospective study aimed to examine the different aspects of cognition associated with agitation.

    The sample comprised 82 participants (75.61% male) admitted to an inpatient rehabilitation hospital in PTA. All patients had sustained moderate to extremely severe brain injury as assessed using the Westmead Post-Traumatic Amnesia Scale (WPTAS) (mean duration = 42.30 days, SD = 35.10). Participants were assessed daily using the Agitated Behaviour Scale and WPTAS as part of routine clinical practice during PTA. The Confusion Assessment Protocol was administered two to three times per week until passed criterion was achieved (mean number assessments = 3.13, SD = 3.76). Multilevel mixed modelling was used to investigate the association between aspects of cognition and agitation using performance on items of mental control, orientation, memory free recall, memory recognition, vigilance, and auditory comprehension.

    Findings showed that improvement in orientation was significantly associated with lower agitation levels. A nonsignificant trend was observed between improved recognition memory and lower agitation.

    Current findings suggest that the presence of disorientation in PTA may interfere with a patient's ability to understand and engage with the environment, which in turn results in agitated behaviours. Interventions aimed at maximizing orientation may serve to minimize agitation during PTA.

Under extracorporeal membrane oxygenation, balloon angioplasty of the left coronary artery with a 2.0 × 15-mm balloon and stent implantation on the right coronary artery with a 2.25 × 26-mm stent were performed successfully. Echocardiography after the intervention showed recovered cardiac function and no complications.Maternal obesity increases the risk of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) in offspring. The Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYBG) is effective for achieving weight loss and ameliorates NAFLD. To determine whether these benefits are maintained after pregnancy and/or lactation, and whether they modulate hepatic morphofunction in the next generation, we evaluated hepatic lipid metabolism in Western diet (WD)-obese female rats that underwent RYGB and in their F1 offspring at adulthood. Female Wistar rats consumed a WD from 21 to 130 days of age, before being submitted to RYGB (WD-RYGB-F0) or SHAM (WD-SHAM-F0) operations. After 5 weeks, these females were mated with control male breeders, and the male and female F1 offspring were identified as WD-RYGB-F1 and WD-SHAM-F1. WD-RYGB-F0 dams exhibited lower serum lipids levels, but severe hepatic steatosis and pathological features of advanced liver injury. The hepatic proteins involved in lipogenesis were reduced in WD-RYGB-F0, as were the genes related to β-oxidation and bile acids (BAs).

    The purpose of our study was to compare real-time, live observational scoring with delayed retrospective video review of operative performance and to determine whether the evaluation method affected the attainment of proficiency benchmarks.

    Sixteen arthroscopy/sports medicine fellows and 2 senior residents completed training to perform arthroscopic Bankart repairs (ABRs) and arthroscopic rotator cuff repairs (ARCRs) using a proficiency-based progression curriculum. Each final operative performance for 15 randomly selected ABRs and 13 ARCRs performed on cadavers were scored live (observation during the operative performance) and on delayed video review (6-8 weeks) by 1 of 15 trained raters using validated metric-based (step and error) assessment tools. The inter-rater reliability (IRR) of live versus video review by a single rater was calculated, and changes to the trainee's attainment of the proficiency benchmarks were noted.     The primary study objective was to describe the incidence of osteochondral damage (OD) in our cohort of patients with patellar instability (PI). The secondary objective was to assess for associations between patient demographic characteristics, duration of PI, and quantitative radiographic measurements of anatomic risk factors for PI and OD in this cohort.

    A retrospective chart review identified patients treated for PI at a tertiary referral center between 2013 and 2018. Patients were evaluated for osteochondral injury with either magnetic resonance imaging if treated nonoperatively or operative reports if treated surgically. The Caton-Deschamps ratio, proximal tibial tubercle-to-trochlear groove (pTT-TG) distance, distal tibial tubercle-to-trochlear groove (dTT-TG) distance, lateral trochlear inclination (LTI) angle, lateral patellar inclination (LPI) angle, and sulcus angle were calculated from magnetic resonance imaging scans. Trochlear dysplasia is an important risk factor for PI that can be reliabilile) and the incidence of OD in our cohort of patients with PI.     To assess whether biologic augmentation in addition to core decompression (CD), compared with CD alone, improves clinical and radiographic outcomes in the treatment of nontraumatic osteonecrosis of the femoral head (ONFH). Preoperative magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) was evaluated for BMLs based on two classification systems (Welsch, et al. and Costa-Paz, et al.) by two independent graders. BMLs associations with minimum 1-year postoperative outcomes were evaluated and the effect of BML classification on survivorship was investigated with Kaplan-Meier curves.

    Seventy-seven patients who underwent isolated OCA transplantation (mean follow-up 39.46 ± 22.67 months) and had a preoperative MRI were included. Within this cohort, 82% of patients demonstrated a BML. The preoperative Costa-Paz et al. classification was significantly positively correlated with the postoperative function VAS, IKDC, and VR-12 Physical raw scores for both graders (p<0.05).     This is a retrospective study with prospectively collected data. Patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) were collected from April 2017 to March 2020. All patients who underwent arthroscopic meniscal repair and completed both preoperative and postoperative PROMs were included in the analysis. MCID and PASS were calculated via half the standard deviation of the delta PRO change from baseline (for International Knee Documentation Committee Score [IKDC]) and via anchor-based methodology (Knee Injury and Osteoarthritis Outcome Score [KOOS] subscales).

The purpose of our study was to compare real-time, live observational scoring with delayed retrospective video review of operative performance and to determine whether the evaluation method affected the attainment of proficiency benchmarks. Sixteen arthroscopy/sports medicine fellows and 2 senior residents completed training to perform arthroscopic Bankart repairs (ABRs) and arthroscopic rotator cuff repairs (ARCRs) using a proficiency-based progression curriculum. Each final operative performance for 15 randomly selected ABRs and 13 ARCRs performed on cadavers were scored live (observation during the operative performance) and on delayed video review (6-8 weeks) by 1 of 15 trained raters using validated metric-based (step and error) assessment tools. The inter-rater reliability (IRR) of live versus video review by a single rater was calculated, and changes to the trainee's attainment of the proficiency benchmarks were noted. The correlation coefficient (r) and the R were also calculated for the paired r operative performance assessment, including high-stakes evaluations. The primary study objective was to describe the incidence of osteochondral damage (OD) in our cohort of patients with patellar instability (PI). The secondary objective was to assess for associations between patient demographic characteristics, duration of PI, and quantitative radiographic measurements of anatomic risk factors for PI and OD in this cohort.     In this randomized, cross-over, placebo-controlled trial, stable outpatients with PAH/CTEPH underwent maximal cardiopulmonary exercise testing, followed by two submaximal trials, during which they received supplementary oxygen (O
    ) or medical-air. Continuous, non-invasive hemodynamics were monitored via photophlythesmography. Cerebral and quadriceps muscle oxygenation were recorded via near-infrared spectroscopy. The CPT decreased BFI and BFI/MBP in the intercostal (P = 0.01 and less then 0.01, respectively) and vastus lateralis (P = 0.08 and 0.03, respectively) only in the COPD group, and the per cent BFI and BFI/MBP decrease was similar between muscles (P = 0.78 and 0.85, respectively). Our results provide evidence of spatial-numerical mapping on all three axes for both age groups that are similar in strength. This indicates that, even at an early stage of formal education, children can flexibly assign numerical magnitude to any spatial dimension. To examine the contribution of extracorporeal space and spatio-anatomical mapping to the SNARC effect across axes, these sources were pitted against each other by swapping the position of the response hands in Experiment 1b. Switching hand position did not reveal convincing evidence for SNARC effects on any axis. In this study, molecular analyses of malaria parasites in the Central Highlands were performed to understand the population structure and genetic diversity of the parasites circulating in the region. Plasmodium falciparum (68.7%) and P. vivax (27.4%) along with mixed infections with P. falciparum/P. vivax (3.9%) were detected in 230 blood samples from patients with malaria. Allele-specific nested-polymerase chain reaction (PCR) or PCR-restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP) analyses of pfmsp-1, pfama-1, pvcsp, and pvmsp-1 revealed complex genetic makeup in P. falciparum and P. vivax populations of Vietnam. Substantial multiplicity of infection (MOI) was also identified, suggesting significant genetic diversity and polymorphism of P. falciparum and P. vivax populations in the Central Highlands of Vietnam. These results provide fundamental insight into the current patterns of dispersion and genetic nature of malaria parasites as well as for the development of malaria elimination strategies in the endemic region.Parasites of the genus Haemoproteus have been reported in almost all avian clades and zoogeographic regions, except Antarctica. However, since the original description this parasite has not been studied in detail. Here, we investigate the prevalence of Haemoproteus spp. in Brazilian Columbiformes and conducted a taxonomic integrative study of the species Haemoproteus (Haemoproteus) paramultipigmentatus, including new morphological and molecular data from a Brazilian population. Moreover, we provide discussions about the geographic distribution and phylogenetic relationships between different lineages of this parasite. Our findings demonstrated a high prevalence of Haemoproteus spp.

  • Young women diagnosed with a gynecologic cancer face the risk of significant physical and mental health problems after end of treatment. Still, there is a lack of knowledge regarding specific support needs in this population, and supportive care services provided to young women with a gynecologic cancer have been reported to be insufficient. The aim of this study was therefore to identify support needs experienced by women diagnosed with a gynecologic cancer before the age of 40.

    Qualitative semi-structured interviews were conducted with participants (n=10). Interviews were analyzed using content analysis with an inductive approach.

    Eight categories and two themes were identified. The themes described if these needs were related to how women wanted the support to be provided, or to what the support should contain, i.e., 'Form' and 'Content', respectively. The categories related to 'Form' included Outreach support; Long-term specialized support; Support for the whole family; and Peer-support, whereas categories related to 'Content' included needs for Support for psychological reactions; Support related to reproduction, sexuality, and family life; Information regarding late effects; and Support tailored to younger women.

    To use the oxyhaemoglobin dissociation curve (ODC) to non-invasively measure the ventilation perfusion ratio (V
    /Q) and right-to-left intrapulmonary vascular shunt before and after liver transplantation (LT) in children with hepatopulmonary syndrome (HPS). To investigate whether the right-to-left shunt derived by ODC correlated with the shunt derived by technetium-99 labelled macroaggregated albumin lung perfusion scan (MAA).

    A retrospective cohort study at King's College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, London, UK was performed between 1998 and 2016. The V
    /Q and right-to-left shunt were non-invasively measured pre and post LT. The pre-LT right-to-left intrapulmonary shunt was also measured by MAA. The non-invasively derived pre-LT shunt was correlated with the shunt derived by MAA.

    Fifteen children with HPS were studied with a median (IQR) age at LT of 8.8 (6.6-12.9) years. The median (IQR) pre-LT V
    /Q [0.49 (0.42-0.65)] was lower compared to the post-LT V
    /Q [0.61 (IQR 0.54-0.72), p=0.012]. The median (IQR) pre-LT shunt was 19 (3-24) % which decreased to zero in all but one children post-LT, (p=0.001). The MAA-derived shunt was significantly positively correlated with the ODC-derived shunt (r=0.783, p=0.001). The mean (SD) difference between shunt derived by ODC and shunt derived by MAA was 0.5 (7.2) %.

As such, research regarding ASPD typically focuses on children and younger adults. The apparent age-specific prevalence of ASPD may be due, in part, to diagnostic criteria informed by research excluding older adults. The present study sought to better understand the manifestation of ASPD in older adults and investigate potential age bias in the diagnostic criteria. Item response theory methods were used to the diagnostic criteria for ASPD with data from the National Epidemiologic Survey on Alcohol and Related Conditions Wave III. The measurement of three ASPD criteria showed uniform differential item functioning (DIF), suggesting that older adults were less likely to endorse the item than younger adults despite having the same level of underlying personality disorder. The items with DIF are related to the following criteria for ASPD Failure to conform to social norms with respect to lawful behaviors as indicated by repeatedly performing acts that are grounds for arrest (3 items with DIF); irritability and aggressiveness, as indicated by repeated physical fights or assaults (1 item with DIF); and consistent irresponsibility, as indicated by repeated failure to sustain consistent work behavior or honor financial obligations (1 item with DIF). Results of the present study can be used to inform the development of criteria that better capture the age-specific experience of this disorder. The themes described if these needs were related to how women wanted the support to be provided, or to what the support should contain, i.e., 'Form' and 'Content', respectively. To use the oxyhaemoglobin dissociation curve (ODC) to non-invasively measure the ventilation perfusion ratio (V /Q) and right-to-left intrapulmonary vascular shunt before and after liver transplantation (LT) in children with hepatopulmonary syndrome (HPS). To investigate whether the right-to-left shunt derived by ODC correlated with the shunt derived by technetium-99 labelled macroaggregated albumin lung perfusion scan (MAA). A retrospective cohort study at King's College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, London, UK was performed between 1998 and 2016. The V /Q and right-to-left shunt were non-invasively measured pre and post LT. The pre-LT right-to-left intrapulmonary shunt was also measured by MAA. The non-invasively derived pre-LT shunt was correlated with the shunt derived by MAA. Fifteen children with HPS were studied with a median (IQR) age at LT of 8.8 (6.6-12.9) years. The median (IQR) pre-LT V /Q [0.49 (0.42-0.65)] was lower compared to the post-LT V /Q [0.61 (IQR 0.54-0.72), p=0.012]. The median (IQR) pre-LT shunt was 19 (3-24) % which decreased to zero in all but one children post-LT, (p=0.001). The MAA-derived shunt was significantly positively correlated with the ODC-derived shunt (r=0.783, p=0.001). The mean (SD) difference between shunt derived by ODC and shunt derived by MAA was 0.5 (7.2) %. As such, research regarding ASPD typically focuses on children and younger adults. The apparent age-specific prevalence of ASPD may be due, in part, to diagnostic criteria informed by research excluding older adults. The present study sought to better understand the manifestation of ASPD in older adults and investigate potential age bias in the diagnostic criteria. Item response theory methods were used to the diagnostic criteria for ASPD with data from the National Epidemiologic Survey on Alcohol and Related Conditions Wave III. The measurement of three ASPD criteria showed uniform differential item functioning (DIF), suggesting that older adults were less likely to endorse the item than younger adults despite having the same level of underlying personality disorder. The items with DIF are related to the following criteria for ASPD Failure to conform to social norms with respect to lawful behaviors as indicated by repeatedly performing acts that are grounds for arrest (3 items with DIF); irritability and aggressiveness, as indicated by repeated physical fights or assaults (1 item with DIF); and consistent irresponsibility, as indicated by repeated failure to sustain consistent work behavior or honor financial obligations (1 item with DIF). Results of the present study can be used to inform the development of criteria that better capture the age-specific experience of this disorder. Here, we investigated the combined effects of ocean acidification and hypoxia on the reproductive capacity of the thick-shelled mussel Mytilus coruscus. Our results demonstrated low pH but not low oxygen induced decreased gonadosomatic index (GSI) in mussels. Male mussels had a lower level of sex steroids (estradiol, testosterone, and progesterone) when kept at low pH.   • Stapled peptides have been widely applied in many fields, including pharmaceutical chemistry, diagnostic reagents, and materials science. However, most traditional stapled peptide preparation methods rely on prefunctionalizations, which limit the diversity of stapled peptides. Recently, the emergence of late-stage transition metal-catalyzed C-H activation in amino acids and peptides has attracted wide interest due to its robustness and applicability for peptide stapling. In this review, we summarize the methods for late-stage construction of stapled peptides via transition metal-catalyzed C-H activation.
    The aim of this study is to evaluate if the risk of mortality among the elderly Korean individuals is associated with any of the two intergenerational variables participants' forecast for their children's economic environment (FCEE) and participants' satisfaction with their relationship with their children (SRC).

    Data from the Korean Longitudinal Study of Aging (KLoSA) conducted between 2006 and 2016 were examined. In total, 9937 individuals were included at baseline. The FCEE and SRC were measured using an 11-point Likert scale, which were stratified into four levels "negative" (0-2), "Moderately negative" (3-5), "moderately positive" (6-8) and "positive" (9, 10).

    The Cox proportional hazards model was used to calculate hazard ratios of all-cause mortality across different levels of FCEE and SRC while adjusting for other bio-psycho-social variables. Post-hoc subgroup analyses were conducted to examine how potential confounders contribute to the associations found in our study.     Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is an invaluable diagnostic and research tool. Having an MRI scan is not always comfortable and may deter people from taking part in MRI research. Maximizing comfort during scanning will improve participants' experiences and image quality.

    To define which factors improve comfort during an MRI scan for research by asking people who have participated in MRI research.

    People who had participated in MRI research during the past two years were invited, as 'public advisors' to discuss their experiences together and agree on which factors are most important in ensuring comfort while participating in MRI research.

    Public advisors ranked researcher-participant communication as the most important factor. In response, an example script to guide MRI researchers in communicating with participants was developed through close consultation between research staff, public advisors and the public. This outlines the often-missing information necessary to convey to participants, including explaining the reasons behind instructions, managing expectations, providing reassurance, encouragement and progress updates during scanning.

    Drawing upon personal experiences as MRI research participants, public advisors highlighted the importance of effective and on-going researcher communication throughout. The example script may be used as a training tool for researchers to help ensure participants' comfort during scanning.

    The aim of this study was to examine the ability of a group-based multi-component psycho-educational intervention (GMC-PEI) to reduce depression, and improve caregiving appraisals, coping skills of informal caregivers and the condition of people with dementia.

    In this randomized controlled and blinded trial, we enrolled 54 informal caregivers of people with dementia visiting the Japan National Center of Geriatrics and Gerontology, and divided them into GMC-PEI and control groups. The intervention group received a 12-week GMC-PEI program that included six 2-h structured sessions to enhance their knowledge of dementia, caregiving skills and coping skills. The control group received leaflets containing information about dementia. We evaluated caregivers' depression, caregiving time, subjective burden, caregiving appraisal and care coping skills. We also evaluated people with dementia at baseline and 12 weeks, and reassessed 20 participants from the intervention group at 24 and 48 weeks.

    MEDLINE database was systematically searched using the PubMed interface following the PRISMA guidelines. Inclusion criteria were as follows (i) randomized clinical trials (RCTs), open-label studies, and case series; (ii) specific evaluation of the treatment outcomes using psychometric scales; (iii) clinical studies in adults; and (iv) articles in the English language. The systematic review has been registered on PROSPERO (CRD42020192788).

  • Osteogenic endothelial progenitor cells (EPCs) contribute to impaired endothelial repair and promote coronary artery disease (***) and vascular calcification. Immature EPCs expressing osteocalcin (OCN) has been linked to unstable ***; however, phenotypic regulation of OCN-expressing EPCs is not understood. We hypothesized that gut-microbiome derived pro-inflammatory substance, trimethylamine N-oxide (TMAO) might be associated with mobilization of OCN-expressing EPCs. This study aimed to investigate the association between dysbiosis, TMAO, and circulating mature and immature OCN-expressing EPCs levels in patients with and without ***. We included 202 patients (*** N = 88; no *** N = 114) who underwent assessment of EPCs using flow cytometry and gut microbiome composition. Mature and immature EPCs co-staining for OCN were identified using cell surface markers as CD34+/CD133-/kinase insert domain receptor (KDR)+ and CD34-/CD133+/KDR+ cells, respectively. The number of observed operational taxonomy units (OTU), index of microbial richness, was used to identify patients with dysbiosis. The number of immature OCN-expressing EPCs were higher in patients with *** or dysbiosis than patients without. TMAO levels were not associated with circulating levels of OCN-expressing EPCs. The relative abundance of Ruminococcus gnavus was moderately correlated with circulating levels of immature OCN-expressing EPCs, especially in diabetic patients.     The Barcelona Clinic Liver Cancer (BCLC) staging system is the most widely applied staging system for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and is recommended for treatment allocation and prognostic prediction. The BCLC guidelines were modified in 2018 to indicate that Child-Pugh A without any ascites is essential for all stages except stage D. This study sought to provide a description of patients with HCC treated at a high-volume liver surgery center in Taiwan where referral is not needed and all treatment modalities are available and reimbursed by the National Health Insurance program. As such, certain variables that could modulate treatment decisions in clinical practice, including financial constraints, the availability of treatment procedures, and the expertise of the hospital, could be excluded. The study further sought to evaluate the adherence to the modified BCLC guidelines.

Microsatellites have well established effects on (a) the genetic structure of diverse human populations and (b) expression of nearby genes. These lines of inquiry have uncovered 3,984 ethnically biased microsatellite loci (EBML) and 28,375 expression STRs (eSTRs), respectively. We hypothesize that a combination of EBML, eSTRs, and gene expression data (RNA-seq) can be used to show that microsatellites contribute to differential gene expression and phenotype in human populations. In fact, our previous study demonstrated a degree of mutual overlap between EBML and eSTRs but fell short of quantifying effects on gene expression. The present work aims to narrow the gap. First, we identify 313 overlapping EBML/eSTRs and recapitulate their mutual overlap. The 313 EBML/eSTRs are then characterized across ethnicity and tissue type. We use RNA-seq data to pursue validation of 49 regions that affect whole blood gene expression; 32 out of 54 affected genes are differentially expressed in Africans and Europeans. We quantify the relative contribution of these 32 genes to differential expression; fold change tends to be less than other differentially expressed genes. Repeat length correlates with expression for 15 of the 32 genes; two are conspicuously involved in glutathione metabolism. Finally, we repurpose a mathematical model of glutathione metabolism to investigate how a single polymorphic microsatellite affects phenotype. We conclude with a testable prediction that microsatellite polymorphisms affect GPX7 expression and oxidative stress in Africans and Europeans.
    Neurotrauma is an important but preventable cause of death and disability worldwide, with the majority being associated with road traffic collisions (RTCs).     This study took place in Colombia where qualitative data collection was carried out with ten key informants between October and November 2019. Semi-structured interviews were conducted and explored perceptions on RTCs and neurotrauma, preventative strategies and interventions, and the role of research in prevention. Interview transcripts were analysed by thematic analysis using a framework approach.

Microsatellites have well established effects on (a) the genetic structure of diverse human populations and (b) expression of nearby genes. These lines of inquiry have uncovered 3,984 ethnically biased microsatellite loci (EBML) and 28,375 expression STRs (eSTRs), respectively. We hypothesize that a combination of EBML, eSTRs, and gene expression data (RNA-seq) can be used to show that microsatellites contribute to differential gene expression and phenotype in human populations. In fact, our previous study demonstrated a degree of mutual overlap between EBML and eSTRs but fell short of quantifying effects on gene expression. The present work aims to narrow the gap. First, we identify 313 overlapping EBML/eSTRs and recapitulate their mutual overlap. The 313 EBML/eSTRs are then characterized across ethnicity and tissue type. We use RNA-seq data to pursue validation of 49 regions that affect whole blood gene expression; 32 out of 54 affected genes are differentially expressed in Africans and Europeans. We quantify the relative contribution of these 32 genes to differential expression; fold change tends to be less than other differentially expressed genes. Repeat length correlates with expression for 15 of the 32 genes; two are conspicuously involved in glutathione metabolism. Finally, we repurpose a mathematical model of glutathione metabolism to investigate how a single polymorphic microsatellite affects phenotype. We conclude with a testable prediction that microsatellite polymorphisms affect GPX7 expression and oxidative stress in Africans and Europeans.     The Barcelona Clinic Liver Cancer (BCLC) staging system is the most widely applied staging system for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and is recommended for treatment allocation and prognostic prediction. The BCLC guidelines were modified in 2018 to indicate that Child-Pugh A without any ascites is essential for all stages except stage D. This study sought to provide a description of patients with HCC treated at a high-volume liver surgery center in Taiwan where referral is not needed and all treatment modalities are available and reimbursed by the National Health Insurance program. As such, certain variables that could modulate treatment decisions in clinical practice, including financial constraints, the availability of treatment procedures, and the expertise of the hospital, could be excluded. The study further sought to evaluate the adherence to the modified BCLC guidelines.

    This was a retrospective study with prospectively collected data. 1801 consecutive patients with de novo HCC were enrolled through our institution from 2011-2017.

    There were 302 patients with stage 0, 783 with stage A, 242 with stage B, 358 with stage C, and 116 with stage D HCC. Treatment adhering to the modified BCLC guidelines recommendations was provided to 259 (85.8%) stage 0 patients, 606 (77.4%) stage A patients, 120 (49.6%) stage B patients, 93 (26.0%) stage C patients, and 83 (71.6%) stage D patients.

Here, 3D-printed microfluidic devices are demonstrated in a proof-of-concept enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay in which a multistep assay timeline is completed by precisely engineering capillary wetting within printed porous bodies. 3D printing provides a scalable route to low-cost microfluidic devices and obviates the assembly of discrete components. The resulting rapid and seamless transition between digital data and physical objects allows for rapid design iterations, and opens up perspectives on distributed manufacturing.
    Although low-voltage zones (LVZs) in the left atrium (LA) are considered arrhythmogenic substrates in some patients with atrial fibrillation (AF), the pathophysiologic factors responsible for LVZ formations remain unclear.

    To elucidate the anatomical relationship between the LA and ascending aorta responsible for anterior LA wall remodeling.

    We assessed the relationship between existence of LVZs on the anterior LA wall and the three-dimensional computed tomography image measurements in 102 patients who underwent AF ablation.

    Twenty-nine patients (28%) had LVZs grearer than 1.0 cm
    on the LA wall in the LA-ascending aorta contact area (LVZ group); no LVZs were seen in the other 73 patients (no-LVZ group). The LVZ group (vs. no-LVZ group) had a smaller aorta-LA angle (21.0 ± 7.7° vs. 24.9 ± 7.1°, p = .015), greater aorta-left-ventricle (LV) angle (131.3 ± 8.8° vs. 126.0 ± 7.9°; p = .005), greater diameter of the noncoronary cusp (NCC; 20.4 ± 2.2 vs. 19.3 ± 2.5 mm; p = .036), thinner LA wall-thickness adjacent to the NCC (2.3 ± 0.7 vs. 2.8 ± 0.8 mm; p = .006), and greater cardiothoracic ratio (percentage of the area in the thoracic area, 40.1 ± 7.1% vs. 35.4 ± 5.7%, p < .001). The aorta-LA angle correlated positively with the patients' body mass index (BMI), and the aorta-LV angle correlated negatively with the body weight and BMI.

The Flory-Huggins interaction parameters calculated from the surface energy and differential scanning calorimetry results suggest that P4T2F-HD shows moderate miscibility with the popular nonfullerene acceptor Y6-BO (2,2'-((2Z,2'Z)-((12,13-bis(2-butyloctyl)-3,9-diundecyl-12,13-dihydro-[1,2,5]thiadiazolo[3,4-e]thieno[2',3'4',5']thieno[2',3'4,5]pyrrolo[3,2-g]thieno[2',3'4,5]thieno[3,2-b]indole-2,10-diyl)bis(methanylylidene))bis(5,6-difluoro-3-oxo-2,3-dihydro-1H-indene-2,1-diylidene))dimalononitrile), while poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT) is very miscible with Y6-BO. As a result, the P4T2F-HD case forms desired nanoscale phase separation in the BHJ film while the P3HT case forms a completely mixed BHJ film, as revealed by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and grazing-incidence wide-angle X-ray scattering (GIWAXS). By optimizing the cathode interface and the morphology of the P4T2F-HDY6-BO films processed from nonhalogenated solvents, a new record PCE of 13.65% for polythiophene-based OSCs is demonstrated. As a result, the P4T2F-HD case forms desired nanoscale phase separation in the BHJ film while the P3HT case forms a completely mixed BHJ film, as revealed by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and grazing-incidence wide-angle X-ray scattering (GIWAXS). By optimizing the cathode interface and the morphology of the P4T2F-HDY6-BO films processed from nonhalogenated solvents, a new record PCE of 13.65% for polythiophene-based OSCs is demonstrated. This work highlights the importance of controlling D/A interactions for achieving desired morphology and also demonstrates a promising OSC system for potential cost-effective organic photovoltaics.
