The BiP co-chaperone and reductase ERdj5 (DNAJC10) is part of the ER quality control machinery and previous studies have shown that overexpression of ERdj5 in vitro enhanced the degradation of P23H rhodopsin; whereas knockdown of ERdj5 increased P23H rhodopsin ER retention and aggregation. Here, we investigated the role of ERdj5 in photoreceptor homeostasis in vivo by using an Erdj5 knock-out mouse crossed with the P23H knock-in mouse, and by adeno associated viral (AAV) vector-mediated gene augmentation of ERdj5 in P23H-3 rats. Electroretinogram (ERG) and optical coherence tomography (OCT) of Erdj5-/- and P23H+/-Erdj5-/- **** showed no effect of ERdj5 ablation on retinal function or photoreceptor survival. Rhodopsin levels and localisation were similar to those of control animals at a range of time points. By contrast, when AAV2/8-ERdj5-HA was subretinally injected into P23H-3 rats, analysis of the full field ERG suggested that overexpression of ERdj5 reduced visual function loss 10 weeks post-injection. This correlated with a significant preservation of photoreceptor cells at 4 and 10 weeks post-injection. Assessment of the outer nuclear layer (ONL) morphology showed preserved ONL thickness and reduced rhodopsin retention in the ONL in the injected superior retina. Overall, these data suggest that manipulation of the ER quality control and ERAD factors to promote mutant protein degradation could be beneficial for the treatment of adRP caused by mutant rhodopsin. © The Author(s) 2020. The ubiquitin system is absolutely central to this process and perturbation of its function contributes directly to the onset and progression of a wide variety of diseases, including cancer, metabolic syndromes, neurodegenerative diseases, autoimmunity, inflammatory disorders, infectious diseases, and muscle dystrophies. Whilst the individual components and the overall architecture of the ubiquitin system have been delineated in some detail, how ubiquitination might be successfully targeted, or harnessed, to develop novel therapeutic approaches to the treatment of disease, currently remains relatively poorly understood. In this review, we will provide an overview of the current status of selected small molecule ubiquitin system inhibitors. We will further discuss the unique challenges of targeting this ubiquitous and highly complex machinery, and explore and highlight potential ways in which these challenges might be met. © 2020 The Author(s).Cleavage of proteins in the extracellular milieu, including hormones, growth factors and their receptors, ion channels, and various cell adhesion and extracellular matrix molecules, plays a key role in the regulation of cell behavior. Among more than 500 proteolytic enzymes encoded by mammalian genomes, membrane-anchored serine proteases (MASPs), which are expressed on the surface of epithelial cells of all major organs, are excellently suited to mediate signal transduction across the epithelia and are increasingly being recognized as important regulators of epithelial development, function, and disease [1-3]. In this minireview, we summarize current knowledge of the in vivo roles of MASPs in acquisition and maintenance of some of the defining functions of epithelial tissues, such as barrier formation, ion transport, and sensory perception. © 2020 The Author(s). This disease was associated with a single genotype of Cryptococcus neoformans (sequence type [ST]5), which was significantly less common in HIV-infected individuals. Aiming to compare the phenotypic characteristics of ST5 and non-ST5 C. neoformans, we selected 30 representative Vietnamese isolates and compared their in vitro pathogenic potential and in vivo virulence. ST5 and non-ST5 organisms exhibited comparable characteristics with respect to in vitro virulence markers including melanin production, replication at 37°C, and growth in cerebrospinal fluid. However, the ST5 isolates had significantly increased variability in cellular and capsular sizing compared with non-ST5 organisms (P  less then  .001). Counterintuitively, **** infected with ST5 isolates had significantly longer survival with lower fungal burdens at day 7 than non-ST5 isolates. Notably, ST5 isolates induced significantly greater initial inflammatory responses than non-ST5 strains, measured by TNF-α concentrations (P  less then  .001). Despite being generally less virulent in the mouse model, we hypothesize that the significant within strain variation seen in ST5 isolates in the tested phenotypes may represent an evolutionary advantage enabling adaptation to novel niches including apparently immunocompetent human hosts. © The Author(s) 2020. Killer yeasts have aroused as suitable candidates for mining new antifungal compounds. Killer strains secrete antimicrobial proteins named killer toxins, with promissory antifungal activity. Here we found that the killer yeast Wickerhamomyces anomalus Cf20 and its cell-free supernatant (CFS) inhibited six pathogenic strains and one collection strain of Candida spp. The inhibition is mainly mediated by secreted killer toxins and, to a lesser extent, by volatile compounds such as acetic acid and ethyl acetate. https://www.selleckchem.com/products/rocaglamide.html A new large killer toxin (>180 kDa) was purified, which exerted 70-74% of the total CFS anti-Candida activity, and the previously described glucanase KTCf20 was inhibitory in a lesser extent as well. Here we first reported that Lindleyin (Lin), one of the major components of rhubarb, possessed neuroprotective effects against H2O2-induced SH-SY5Y cell injury and MPTP-induced PD of C57BL/6 ****. The results showed that Lin can decrease cell death and apoptotic rate induced by H2O2 through inhibiting mitochondrial apoptotic pathway and increasing the activities of ***, GSH-Px, and CAT as well as decreasing the level of MDA. In addition, in vivo studies showed that oral administration of Lin (5 or 20 mg/kg) showed significant change in motor function deficits, antioxidant enzyme activities, apoptotic pathway, and tyrosine hydroxylase expression. In previous studies, Amomum tsaoko has antitumor effect on liver cancer cells, but the mechanism is not clear. Here, we demonstrated that ethanol extract from Amomum tsaoko (At-EE) could inhibit ovarian cancer and decrease angiogenesis in vivo. At-EE did not influence vascular endothelial cells directly, but decreased IL-6 and VEGF secreted by ovarian cancer cells to inhibit angiogenesis through inhibition of p-STAT3 and NF-kB activation. In addition, we demonstrated that p-STAT3 and NF-kB could adjust each other and IL-6 and VEGF also mediate p-STAT3 and NF-kB too, which created a loop. In addition, At-EE interrupted p-STAT3/NF-kB/IL-6 and VEGF loop through induced ER stress. These results reveal that p-STAT3/NF-kB/IL-6 and VEGF is a cascade amplification loop in ovarian cancer for angiogenesis, and induced ER stress can interrupt it. Taken together, this work explored the anticancer activities of Amomum tsaoko, which could be a potential therapeutic candidate in the treatment of ovarian cancer. Our objective was to describes children with hooked EAI needles that were embedded in soft tissues. Case presentation Results Two children self-injected in their shins. The embedded EAIs required removal in the Emergency Department. Both needles were hooked and splayed at the tip. A boy in anaphylaxis kicked his leg during EAI injection and the hooked needle embedded under his skin and was difficult to dislodge. The exposed needle was curved. A girl had an EAI administered for anaphylaxis, which was also difficult to dislodge. On removal, the distal needle tip was hooked approximately 160 degrees. Images of the device revealed that the needle fired off-center from the device and the device components were cracked. We propose three different explanations for these hooked EAI needles. The first is that the needle could hit bone during injection and curve rather than penetrates further. Secondly, the needle could bend when the patient moves during injection. Thirdly, if a needle fires sufficiently off-center to hit the cartridge carrier, this could hook the needle prior to injection. Conclusions Awareness of the reasons for needle hooking, damage observed, and challenges and successful approaches to their removal, can better prepare the provider for these uncommon events. Teaching parents, children and educators about safe EAI storage and appropriate restraint during use may prevent some of these accidental injuries. Even though this kind of radiation therapy appears effective and valuable, BT has been facing a slow but progressive decline over the past decades in Europe, particularly in Italy. Aims of this study were to identify the practical and theoretical reasons why BT is facing a slow decline in Italy, and to define a vision of the Italian Association of Radiotherapy and Clinical Oncology (AIRO) and a strategy about this emerged issues. Material and methods A programmatic path divided into three steps like a trilogy was launched by AIRO Interventional Radiotherapy study group. The study group performed an initial data collection to highlight both the clinical and the educational topics and problems through specific surveys. After having analyzed the results of the surveys and shared a vision about the emerged issues, a specific strategy was adopted. Results Four relevant domains were identified and for each ones, a strategy has been discussed and defined. This manuscript shows in detail the individual actions defined (accomplished or in progress). Conclusions The AIRO vision implies that specific strategic interventions must be carried out in the field of national guidelines, education, research, and communication with patients and colleagues of other specialties in an interdisciplinary setting. Standard of care for patients with these tumors includes craniotomy, stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS), or whole brain radiotherapy (WBRT) for patients with brain metastases. Brachytherapy shows great promise as a therapy for brain metastases, but its role has not been sufficiently explored in the current literature. Material and methods The PubMed, Cochrane, and Scopus databases were searched using a combination of search terms and synonyms for brachytherapy, brain neoplasms, and brain metastases, for articles published between January 1st, 1990 and January 1st, 2018. Of the 596 articles initially identified, 37 met the inclusion criteria, of which 14 were review articles, while the remaining 23 papers with detailing individual studies were fully analyzed. Results Most data focused on 125I and suggested that it offers rates of local control and overall survival comparable to standard of care modalities such as SRS.

  • Damaging navicular bone enhancement simply by baicalein via the mTORC1 path.
    Two mechanisms were revealed for this finding (1) Cu2+ ions suppressed the photo-transformation of GO; (2) the toxicity of free Cu2+ ions was decreased through the adsorption/retention of Cu2+ ions and formation of Cu-based nanoparticles (e.g., Cu2O and Cu2S) on the photo-transformed GO. The provided data are helpful for better understanding the environmental process and risk of GO under natural conditions. The development of "green" water disinfection technology utilizing solar energy is highly desired but remains challenging. In this study, sulfate radical (•SO4-)-mediated bacterial inactivation was first attempted by using Fe3O4-based magnetic hydrochar (MHC) as a recyclable catalyst for persulfate (PS) activation under visible light (VL) irradiation. Complete treatment of 8.0 log E. coli cells was reached within 40 min in VL/PS/****system, compared with that of only 2.0 log-reduction was obtained in the PS/****system under the same conditions.   • DAMAC: The Delay-Aware ****Standard protocol for Ad Hoc Underwater Acoustic guitar Sensor Networks.
    [Purpose] The purpose of this study was to investigate sports-related injuries among judokas in Mongolia which is classified in the lower-middle income country. This study may help prevent future sports-related injuries. [Participants and Methods] We studied 75 judokas affiliated to the judo club in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia. The questionnaire survey included questions regarding current and past judo-related injuries. [Results] Out of 75 judokas, 39% judokas had current judo-related injuries, and 25% judokas had past injuries. [Participants and Methods] The 21 participants (10 participants in the intervention group and 11 participants in the control group) were provided with information about metabolic syndrome. Participants in the intervention group were asked to set goals to improve their lifestyle (dietary and exercise) and their self-efficacy. The participants completed and submitted a weekly, self-monitoring sheet and were provided with feedback on their lifestyle. [Results] Following intervention, the values of body mass index and abdominal circumference were significantly lower for the intervention group as compared to the control group. There were no differences in the total physical activity level, total energy intake, or blood levels of lipids between the two groups. [Conclusion] According to Motivational Interviewing, to modify and continue behaviors, it is important for people to recognize "their significance" and have "confidence". In the present study, information about metabolic syndrome was provided to enable the recognition of the importance of behaviors. Moreover, participants in the intervention group were required to set goals to increase their self-efficacy. [Participants and Methods] A total of 200 individuals completed the questionnaire. Rasch analysis to investigate the rating scale structure and examine the structural validity and reliability of the scale. The unidimensionality of the items was examined using the mean square infit values and principal component analysis of residuals. The separation reliability of the scale was also examined. [Results] The rating scale structure can be improved by collapsing several categories (from seven categories to four categories). Unidimensionality was found for seven items. The separation reliability was acceptable for item calibrations and persons. [Conclusion] Inclusion of seven items with a 4-category rating scale was appropriate for the Self-Assessment Burden Scale-Motor questionnaire. [Results] Regarding alignment, significant correlations were found between hip extension range of motion and sagittal vertebral axis; between occiput-to-wall distance and thoracolumbar kyphosis; and between **** extensor endurance and pelvic tilt and pelvic incidence-lumbar lordosis mismatch, also known as the calculated (pelvic incidence) minus (lumbar lordosis) value. With regards to quality of life, significant correlations were found between pain-related disorders and lumbar spine range of motion, and between gait disturbance and knee and hip extension ranges of motion. Subsequently, an accelerometer, a high-velocity camera, and ultrasonography were used to obtain measurements, and an Echolizer software was used to determine ultrasound-based velocities. Finally, the impact of the location and size of the regions of interest and the brightness and contrast of the images was analyzed. [Results] The regression equation was expressed as y=1.150 × -0.071 with a determination coefficient of 0.996. The average absolute error of the software was 0.02 mm/s, and the average relative error was 0.20% of the actual velocity between 2.5 and 16.5 mm/s after the regression equation was applied to the measured data. The accuracy of measurement was reduced owing to the increased size of the regions of interest, which included poor image quality or a deeper zone.

  • A fast-analytical method using simplified extraction has been developed for the simultaneous determination of 42 compounds from 4 different classes of veterinary drugs (amphenicols, triphenylmethane, fluoroquinolones, and sulfonamides) in fish by reverse phase liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry. The selection of extraction reagents was optimized using different types of microfiltration membrane, mobile phase, and LC column. Samples were extracted using 0.4% hydrochloric acid in acetonitrile and ethyl acetate and then were cleaned up using solid-phase extraction Cleanert Alumina N columns (500 mg) and Oasis hydrophilic-lipophilic balance (HLB) cartridges. The chromatographic separation was performed on a XR-ODS C8 column using a mobile phase of (A) 0.1% formic acid and 2 mM ammonium acetate and (B) 0.1% formic acid acetonitrile at a flow rate of 0.25 mL·min-1. The results indicated 67.7-112.8% recovery of 42 compounds with an intra- and interday relative standard deviations less than 10%. The limits of quantification for analytes were in the range of 0.3-1.0 μg kg-1 for samples which were satisfactory to support future surveillance monitoring. The method applicability was checked by analyzing 30 fish samples collected from local markets. Copyright © 2020 Yongping Chen et al.We report the case of a 74-year-old patient in whom a ductal prostate cancer was incidentally endoscopically diagnosed in the course of ureteral stenting due to a left distal ureteral stone. The initial PSA was 0.8 μg/l and the digital rectal examination was not suspicious. A radical prostatectomy was performed, and the ensuing follow-up was unremarkable with no signs of recurrence. Fourteen years later, the patient presented with an obstructive pyelonephritis due to a left-sided ureteral stone requiring ureteral stenting. An exophytic tumor was seen in the lining of vesicourethral anastomosis and surgically excised after the pyelonephritis subsided. The histopathological and immunohistochemical analysis revealed a ductal cancer of the prostate consistent with a late local recurrence. Serum PSA was below the limit of detection. Re-staging performed by an MRI of the pelvis, thoracoabdominal CT scan, and gallium-68 PSMA-PET did not reveal any other signs of disease. We herein report the case of a 57-year-old man admitted to the emergency department with complaints of nausea, swelling, and pain in the left inguinal area. He was diagnosed with left incarcerated inguinal hernia and treated laparoscopically with transabdominal preperitoneal (TAPP) mesh hernioplasty. During the operation, AE, lodged in the direct hernia sac, was seen to originate from the sigmoid colon. The narrow internal inguinal ring was incised at the 2 o'clock position using a monopolar hook, and the hypertrophic AE was reduced to the abdomen and resected. Conclusion Non-infective causes of pneumonitis should be suspected in the setting of poorly resolving pneumonias, especially when microbiological and serological investigations does not support an infective etiology. Presence of systemic symptoms with arthralgia, rash, and disproportionately elevated ferritin level supports the diagnosis of AOSD.     A fast-analytical method using simplified extraction has been developed for the simultaneous determination of 42 compounds from 4 different classes of veterinary drugs (amphenicols, triphenylmethane, fluoroquinolones, and sulfonamides) in fish by reverse phase liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry. The selection of extraction reagents was optimized using different types of microfiltration membrane, mobile phase, and LC column. Samples were extracted using 0.4% hydrochloric acid in acetonitrile and ethyl acetate and then were cleaned up using solid-phase extraction Cleanert Alumina N columns (500 mg) and Oasis hydrophilic-lipophilic balance (HLB) cartridges. The chromatographic separation was performed on a XR-ODS C8 column using a mobile phase of (A) 0.1% formic acid and 2 mM ammonium acetate and (B) 0.1% formic acid acetonitrile at a flow rate of 0.25 mL·min-1. The results indicated 67.7-112.8% recovery of 42 compounds with an intra- and interday relative standard deviations less than 10%. The limits of quantification for analytes were in the range of 0.3-1.0 μg kg-1 for samples which were satisfactory to support future surveillance monitoring. The method applicability was checked by analyzing 30 fish samples collected from local markets. Copyright © 2020 Yongping Chen et al.We report the case of a 74-year-old patient in whom a ductal prostate cancer was incidentally endoscopically diagnosed in the course of ureteral stenting due to a left distal ureteral stone. The initial PSA was 0.8 μg/l and the digital rectal examination was not suspicious. A radical prostatectomy was performed, and the ensuing follow-up was unremarkable with no signs of recurrence. Fourteen years later, the patient presented with an obstructive pyelonephritis due to a left-sided ureteral stone requiring ureteral stenting. An exophytic tumor was seen in the lining of vesicourethral anastomosis and surgically excised after the pyelonephritis subsided. The histopathological and immunohistochemical analysis revealed a ductal cancer of the prostate consistent with a late local recurrence. Serum PSA was below the limit of detection. Re-staging performed by an MRI of the pelvis, thoracoabdominal CT scan, and gallium-68 PSMA-PET did not reveal any other signs of disease. The ensuing follow-up is planned with regular flexible cystoscopy and computed thoracoabdominopelvic CT scans. We herein report the case of a 57-year-old man admitted to the emergency department with complaints of nausea, swelling, and pain in the left inguinal area. He was diagnosed with left incarcerated inguinal hernia and treated laparoscopically with transabdominal preperitoneal (TAPP) mesh hernioplasty. During the operation, AE, lodged in the direct hernia sac, was seen to originate from the sigmoid colon. The narrow internal inguinal ring was incised at the 2 o'clock position using a monopolar hook, and the hypertrophic AE was reduced to the abdomen and resected. The patient was discharged uneventfully on the second postoperative day. This article builds on the existing knowledge base by producing a substantive theory of "optimizing social support for the preservation of self" with wider applicability.Background We report a unique case of renal cholesterol crystal embolism (CCE) induced by carotid artery stenting that was successfully treated with evolocumab, a fully human monoclonal antibody against proprotein convertase subtilisin kexin type 9 (PCSK9).Case presentation A 77-year-old man with hypertension, hyperlipidemia, and chronic kidney disease was referred to our department for decreased estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR)-from 32.0 to 13.9 mL/min/1.73 m2-5 weeks after carotid artery stenting. Further examination revealed livedo reticularis in the bilateral toes and eosinophilia (723/μL). Skin biopsy from livedo reticularis tissue in the bilateral toes showed cholesterol clefts in the small arteries. The patient was therefore diagnosed with CCE. After 25 weeks' administration of evolocumab at a dose of 140 mg subcutaneously administered every 2 weeks, his eGFR had improved from 10.7 to 18.1 mL/min/1.73 m2.Conclusion Evolocumab may have a beneficial effect on renal involvement in patients with CCE.BACKGROUND High-flow nasal cannula (HFNC) oxygen therapy provides effective respiratory management in patients with hypoxemic respiratory failure. However, the efficacy and tolerability of HFNC for patients with acute exacerbation of interstitial lung disease (AE-ILD) have not been established. This study was performed to assess the efficacy and tolerability of HFNC for patients with AE-ILD and identify the early predictors of the outcome of HFNC treatment. METHODS We retrospectively reviewed the records of patients with AE-ILD who underwent HFNC. Overall survival, the success rate of HFNC treatment, adverse events, temporary interruption of treatment, discontinuation of treatment at the patient's request, and predictors of the outcome of HFNC treatment were evaluated. RESULTS A total of 66 patients were analyzed. Of these, 26 patients (39.4%) showed improved oxygenation and were successfully withdrawn from HFNC. The 30-day survival rate was 48.5%. No discontinuations at the patient's request were observed, and no serious adverse events occurred.

The 20 replicates of Acacia tree collected from four localities from Egypt were A. tortilis ssp. raddiana and A. farnesiana (Siwa Oasis and Borg El-Arab City), A. stenophylla, A. sclerosperma (Marsa Matroh City), and A. saligna (Abis Station Farm, Alexandria). The results based on the previous markers indicated highly significant differences between Acacia species, confirming the hypothesis of the possibility of using morphological, biochemical, and molecular parameters in species identification. Qualitative characteristics results indicated some similarities and differences that are taxonomically important for comparing taxonomical grouping with morphological data for the genetic description of Acacia species. The purpose of the current study was to identify the motivational and volitional antecedents of college students' hand washing and sleep hygiene behaviors based on an integrated model of behavior that combined social-cognition constructs from the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) and Health Action Process Approach (HAPA). Methods Using a prospective design, college students (N = 1106) completed a survey assessing the motivational constructs of action self-efficacy, attitudes, subjective norm, perceived behavioral control, intentions, and behaviors of hand washing and sleep hygiene at Time 1. Demographic variables were also collected. One month later, at Time 2, college students (N = 524) self-reported on their volitional factors of maintenance self-efficacy, action planning, coping planning, and behaviors of hand washing and sleep hygiene. A further 2 months later, at Time 3, college students (N = 297) were asked to self-report on theived behavioral control on behavior mediated by intention for sleep hygiene. When past behavior was included in the integrated model predicting all the psychological variables and behavior, all of the structural relations were attenuated. Discussion Current findings indicate that college students' hand washing and sleep hygiene behaviors are a function of both motivational and volitional factors. Findings also indicate that the TPB and HAPA pathways might differ for the two health behaviors. Methods Using a prospective design, college students (N = 1106) completed a survey assessing the motivational constructs of action self-efficacy, attitudes, subjective norm, perceived behavioral control, intentions, and behaviors of hand washing and sleep hygiene at Time 1. Demographic variables were also collected. One month later, at Time 2, college students (N = 524) self-reported on their volitional factors of maintenance self-efficacy, action planning, coping planning, and behaviors of hand washing and sleep hygiene. A further 2 months later, at Time 3, college students (N = 297) were asked to self-report on theived behavioral control on behavior mediated by intention for sleep hygiene. When past behavior was included in the integrated model predicting all the psychological variables and behavior, all of the structural relations were attenuated. In this paper, the material flow analysis method is used to analyze the flow and direction of lead loss in four stages of lead production, manufacturing, use, and waste management in China from 1949 to 2017. The proportion coefficient of lead compounds in each stage of lead loss was determined. The categories and quantities of lead compounds discharged in each stage were calculated. The results show that in 2017, China emitted 2.1519 million tons of lead compounds. In the four stages of production, manufacturing, use, and waste management, 137.9 kilo tons, 209 kilo tons, 275 kilo tons, and 1.53 million tons were respectively discharged. The emissions in the production stage are PbS, PbO, PbSO4, PbO2, Pb2O3, and more. The emissions during the manufacturing phase are Pb, PbO, PbSO4, Pb2O3, Pb3O4, and more. The main emissions are Pb, PbO, Pb2O3, Pb3O4, and more. The main emissions in the waste management stage are PbS, Pb, PbO, PbSO4, PbO2, PbCO3, Pb2O3, Pb3O4, and more. Interlayer spacing was evaluated through a high-resolution transmission electron microscope (HR-TEM) equipped with Gatan digital micrograph software. Compositional and functional group analysis was undertaken with energy dispersive X-ray (EDS) and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, respectively. Field emission scanning electron microscope (FE-SEM) and HR-TEM were utilized to probe surface morphologies of prepared samples. Bonding modes in the sample were identified through Raman analysis. These results thus provide proof-of-concept that optical BtBIs can rapidly transmit neural information and control dynamic behaviors across individuals.Atopic, allergic, and especially asthmatic subjects might be particularly susceptible to sensory irritation induced by airborne chemicals compared to healthy individuals. Therefore, a good characterization of subjects is essential in inhalation exposure studies on sensory irritants. A total of 105 volunteers, 87% of whom reported to be non-allergic, participated in a medical examination that included skin prick test (SPT), measurements of total IgE, specific IgE (sIgE) to an ubiquitous allergen mix (sx1), and fractionated exhaled nitric oxide (FeNO), as well as pulmonary function and methacholine test. The median value of sIgE to sx1 was 0.20 kU/L (0.07-91.3 kU/L) and correlated significantly with total IgE (28.8 kU/L (2-756 kU/L)) and FeNO (14 ppb (5-100 ppb)). Forty-three subjects (41%) had sIgE to sx1 ≥ 0.35 kU/L and were classified as atopic. Thirty-five subjects, all also sx1-positive, were positive in SPT. Obstruction, small airway disease, and/or bronchial hyperreactivity were diagnosed in 18 subjects. Receiver operating characteristics (ROC) were performed to check whether signs of sensitization are useful to discriminate subjects with and without airway diseases. However, sx1, total IgE, FeNO, and SPT reached only low areas under the curve (AUC 0.57-0.66). Although predominantly young and, according to their own statements, mostly non-allergic subjects participated in the study, almost half of them were atopic, and 10% had airway disease or bronchial hyperreactivity. This indicates that the validity of self-reported data might be inaccurate. In the present study, cobalt (Co)-doped boron nitride nanosheets (BN-NS) were explored for such an application. Chemical exfoliation process was used to exfoliate BN-NS and the hydrothermal route was adopted to incorporate Co dopant in various concentrations (e.g., 2.5, 5, 7.5, and 10 wt%). X-ray diffraction (XRD) study indicated that crystallinity improved upon doping with the formation of a hexagonal phase of the synthesized material. Selected area electron diffraction (SAED) confirmed enhanced crystallinity, which corroborates XRD results. Interlayer spacing was evaluated through a high-resolution transmission electron microscope (HR-TEM) equipped with Gatan digital micrograph software. Compositional and functional group analysis was undertaken with energy dispersive X-ray (EDS) and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, respectively. Field emission scanning electron microscope (FE-SEM) and HR-TEM were utilized to probe surface morphologies of prepared samples. Bonding modes in the sample were identified through Raman analysis. Optical properties were examined using UV-vis spectroscopy. Photoluminescence spectra were acquired to estimate the separation and recombination of excitons. Magnetic properties were studied by means of hysteresis loop acquired using VSM measurements. Methylene blue dye was degraded with as-prepared host and doped nanosheets used as catalysts and investigated through absorption spectra ranging from 250 to 800 nm. The experimental results of this study indicate that Co-doped BN-NS showed enhanced magnetic properties and can be used to degrade dyes present as an effluent in industrial wastewater.
