  • Milk products are an important component of human diets, with beneficial effects for human health, but also one of the major sources of nutritionally undesirable saturated fatty acids (SFA). Recent discoveries showing the importance of the rumen microbiome on dairy cattle health, metabolism and performance highlight that milk composition, and potentially milk SFA content, may also be associated with microorganisms, their genes and their activities. Understanding these mechanisms can be used for the development of cost-effective strategies for the production of milk with less SFA. Generally, the organic additives had a deleterious effect in both autotrophic and heterotrophic bacteria and the magnitude of the effect is suggested to be dependent on bacterial size. Our results show species-specific responses of the autotrophic and heterotrophic bacteria tested and the responses (beneficial the "good," deleterious the "bad" and/or both the "double-sword") were dependent on the type and concentration of MPs and additives.     Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is significant public concern. Clinical practice indicates that Chinese medicine has certain therapeutic advantages, while there is a lack of evidence-based medicine support. The aim of this study is to synthesize related data to explore efficacy and safety of Chinese medicine for OSA.

    Data in PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, CNKI, WanFang, VIP databases were comprehensively searched. All the randomized controlled trials (RCTs) in OSA children were identified, in which the effects of Chinese medicine on a range of outcomes were compared. The search had a deadline of January 1, 2020. Two investigators independently conducted data extraction and assessed the literature quality of the included studies. The Revman5.3 software was used for meta-analysis of the included literature.

    The efficacy and safety of Chinese medicine for OSA were evaluated in terms of apnea hypopnea index (AHI, the average and lowest blood oxygen, the Epworth Sleep Scale Pooja Gupta, and adverse effects).

    This study provides reliable evidence-based support for the clinical application of Chinese medicine for OSA.

    Several previous trials have attempted to compare the efficacy of femoral nerve block (FNB) and local infiltrative analgesia (LIA) for patients received anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction, but reached inconsistent conclusions. The primary purpose of this present research was to compare the FNB and LIA in the reconstruction of ACL.

    This investigation was conducted and then reported on the basis of Strengthening the Reporting of Observational studies in the Epidemiology checklist. From our registry database, we retrospectively determined 688 patients who received the primary reconstruction of ACL from 2016 to 2019 at our academic institutions. This current retrospective cohort study was approved through the institutional review committee at our hospital. Inclusion criteria contained the primary or autograft bone-patellar tendine-bone reconstruction of ACL in the patients over 16 years of age. Patients in the LIA group underwent intraoperative infiltration at the harvested site after tendon harvest, with use of 2 mg/mL of ropivacaine 20 mL and 5 mg/mL of epinephrine, respectively. After the reconstruction of ACL, 5 Lg/mL of epinephrine, and 20 mL of ropivacaine (2 mg/mL) were injected at the site of surgical trauma. The patient in FNB group was given 40 mL of ropivacaine (2 mg/mL), and the ropivacaine was injected into femoral nerve sheath at femoral triangle level. The primary outcome was the consumption of morphine 24 h after the operation. And the secondary results involved the complications, functional results, and the scores of pain.

Thus, we collected all the published literature and conducted an integrated meta-analysis, which provided better evidence-based medicine for the relationship between rs1800872 polymorphism in interleukin-10 and risk of cervical cancer.

    We systematically performed our search on PubMed, EMBASE, Web of Science, WanFang database, and CNKI for all papers related to this research, published up to August 1, 2020. Summary odds ratios (OR) with 95% confidence interval (95% CI) were calculated in allelic, homozygous, heterozygous, dominant, and recessive model to appraise the association.

    The meta-analysis included 8 studies containing 1393 cervical cancer cases and 1307 controls. The aggregate data under heterozygous model and dominant inheritance model (OR = 0.66, 95% CI 0.55--0.80) indicated a significant association between rs1800872 and the low risk of cervical cancer in the entire population. And the aggregated data under the dominant inheritance model shows that rs1800872 is significantly associated with the reduction in the risk of cervical tumors in the entire population.

    Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a common functional bowel disorder. The global incidence of IBS is as high as 9% to 23%, accounting for about 50% of outpatients in gastroenterology, and the new case detection rate is 0.2% every year. The primary outcome measure will be the total clinical effective rate. The Secondary outcomes will include IBS clinical symptom scores, IBS-Severity Scoring System, IBS-Quality of life, Hamilton Rating Scale for Anxiety, Hamilton Rating Scale for Depression, and Bristol Stool Form Scale.     Norovirus, a contagious disease that spreads rapidly in close-quartered communities, has a debilitating effect in military settings, affecting troops' health, productivity, and mission-readiness. This research presents a model of norovirus transmission, testing the vaccination's effectiveness in military training centers.

    Transmission was modeled using structured ordinary differential equations, including symptomatic and asymptomatic infection, genetic resistance, vaccination, and herd-immunity effects, within a hypothetical cohort of trainees and support staff. The modeled vaccine had an efficacy of 72%, 4 weeks after a single dose in phase 2 clinical trials.     Registered attendees (n = 300) of the 2016 Uniformed Services Academy of Family Physicians Annual Meeting were given a voluntary and anonymous online questionnaire.     Epidemiological studies of sleep disturbances are essential to promote awareness among families and educational officials and deliver appropriate treatment at a very early timing. The aim of this population-based study was to determine the frequency of sleep-disordered breathing (SDB) symptoms and its association with obesity among schoolchildren in West Saudi Arabia.

    This cross-sectional study comprised 2,000 schoolchildren aged 6-12 years. Sleep-disordered breathing symptoms were assessed with Arabic version of Pediatric Sleep Questionnaire (PSQ). Overweight/obesity was evaluated using body mass index (BMI) and their association with SDB was tested using a regression analysis model.

    Overall, 23% of children were at high risk of SDB. Prevalence of habitual snoring was 15.9% and sleep apnea 4%. Boys were at higher risk of SDB than girls (
    = 0.026), while age had no effect (
    = 0.254). High-risk SDB had a strong association with sleep symptoms compared to low-risk SDB (
    < 0.05). Sleep-disordered breathing increased significantly in overweight and obese children (
    = 0.017 and
    < 0.001, respectively).

  • Water buffaloes are considered social animals and perform several activities on pasture, such as grazing, moving, standing, ruminating, wallowing, lying, and drinking. However, the way these animals form their social structure in the herd during each one of these activities is still unknown. Literature for water buffaloes has focused mainly on their productive characteristics, impact of grazing on wetlands and behavior during grazing but failed to address the way these animals form their social organization during their activities on pasture. In this study, the tools of social network analysis are used to analyze, detect, and depict the proximity patterns in water buffaloes' activities on pasture and the effect of their age and gender on them. We describe and interpret a series of global and local network indices, and show that the water buffaloes differentiate their social structure in their activities on pasture and that the animals' age and gender affect their interacting patterns, and provide a framework for the application of social network analysis on grazing animals' social behavioral studies. We expect that this framework could be used in future research to provide information regarding the social structure of other kinds of animals that graze in different forage and climatic environments and help animal breeders to improve their management practices. Additionally, DNA markers might have an effect on other traits such as fertility traits; therefore attention should also be paid to such pleiotropic effects. However, the effects of the markers on both carcass and fertility traits have never been evaluated in the same population, since they are generally measured in different populations. The objective in the current study was to discuss effectiveness of DNA markers developed for carcass traits through investigation of their effects on carcass and fertility traits in a population. We genotyped six markers SCD V293A, FASN g.841G>C, PLAG1 g.49066C>G, NCAPG I442M, DGAT1 K232A, and EDG1 g.1471620G>T in a Japanese Black cattle population ( n = 515 ). To investigate their effects on carcass and fertility traits, we performed statistical analysis (ANOVA and the Tukey-Kramer honestly significant difference (HSD) test). In the results, three of six markers, SCD V293A, NCAPG I442M, and EGD1 g.1471620G>T, were significantly associated with both carcass and fertility traits. Remarkably, the same allele for each marker had positive effects on both traits, suggesting that we would be able to simultaneously improve them using these markers in this population. However, previous studies reported that the effects of DNA markers could differ among populations. Therefore, it is necessary to confirm the effect of the marker in each population before it is used for improvement. Methods A convenience sample of 58 older adult drinkers (mean age = 72) was recruited and followed (n = 40; 70% at follow-up), from four pharmacies in rural Virginia. Ambient exposure models were developed from existing atmospheric parameters measured over Tokyo (35.7°N 139.7°E) and were used to weight erythemally effective solar ultraviolet exposure to gold medalists, taking into account body posture and expected protection by competitor's clothing which was assessed in comparison to respective medalists of the 2016 Rio Olympics. Individual exposure models consider the ultraviolet surface albedo (lawn, concrete, water or sand) and timing of daily events held within Olympic venues. Exposure assessments are presented, including assessments of all preliminary rounds and qualifiers. Within scheduled outdoor events, we award first place (representing the highest and most harmful UV exposure) to the women's tennis singles (1680 J/m2), second to men's golf (1530 J/m2) and third to the men's cycling road race (941 J/m2) for the highest expected erythemally effective solar ultraviolet radiation exposures of the 2020 Tokyo Games. The highest expected solar ultraviolet exposures for nations expected to win greater than three gold medals among the outdoor events were found to occur in athletes from Kenya followed closely by the United States and Hungary. Additionally, DNA markers might have an effect on other traits such as fertility traits; therefore attention should also be paid to such pleiotropic effects. However, the effects of the markers on both carcass and fertility traits have never been evaluated in the same population, since they are generally measured in different populations. The objective in the current study was to discuss effectiveness of DNA markers developed for carcass traits through investigation of their effects on carcass and fertility traits in a population. We genotyped six markers SCD V293A, FASN g.841G>C, PLAG1 g.49066C>G, NCAPG I442M, DGAT1 K232A, and EDG1 g.1471620G>T in a Japanese Black cattle population ( n = 515 ). To investigate their effects on carcass and fertility traits, we performed statistical analysis (ANOVA and the Tukey-Kramer honestly significant difference (HSD) test). In the results, three of six markers, SCD V293A, NCAPG I442M, and EGD1 g.1471620G>T, were significantly associated with both carcass and fertility traits. Remarkably, the same allele for each marker had positive effects on both traits, suggesting that we would be able to simultaneously improve them using these markers in this population. However, previous studies reported that the effects of DNA markers could differ among populations. Therefore, it is necessary to confirm the effect of the marker in each population before it is used for improvement.     Briefly, we present some of the recent steps forward in the epigenetic studies of CVDs. There is an increased appreciation for the contribution of epigenetic alterations in the development of CVDs. Now, we have novel epigenetic biomarkers and therapeutic trials with the use of statins, metformin, and some compounds affecting epigenetic pathways including a BET inhibitor apabetalone. The new knowledge of epigenetic regulation is also discussed in the light of precision medicine of CVDs.

Data on age, sex, cardiovascular risk factors, pharmacological treatment, and the histological characteristics in each individual, and mutations in genes involved in the most advanced index polyp, were collected. Parameters independently associated with a metachronous HRL diagnosis were evaluated through univariate and multivariate analyses. The results are reported as odds ratios and 95% confidence intervals along with P values.

    A total of 537 cases (median age 60.7 years; 66% male) were included. Dyslipidemia and smoking correlated with metachronous HRLs. Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that the presence of multiplicity with ≥3 polyps on the index colonoscopy was significantly associated with metachronous HRL, AA, proximal AA, and ≥3 polyps at 3 years.

Given the myriad of functions of the O-GlcNAc modification, it is therefore somewhat surprising that O-GlcNAc cycling is mediated by only two enzymes the O-GlcNAc Transferase (OGT), which adds O-GlcNAc, and the O-GlcNAcase (OGA), which removes it. A significant outstanding question in the O-GlcNAc field is how do only two enzymes mediate such an abundant and dynamic modification. In this review, we explore the current understanding of mechanisms for substrate selection for the O-GlcNAc cycling enzymes. These mechanisms include direct substrate interaction with specific domains of OGT or OGA, selection of interactors via partner proteins, post-translational modification of OGT or OGA, nutrient sensing, and localization alteration. Altogether, current research paints a picture of an exquisitely regulated and complex system by which OGT and OGA select substrates. Galectin-1 (Gal-1), a prototype member of this family displays mainly anti-inflammatory and immunosuppressive activities, although, similar to many cytokines and growth factors, it may also trigger paradoxical pro-inflammatory effects under certain circumstances. These dual effects could be associated to tissue-, time- or context-dependent regulation of galectin expression and function, including particular pathophysiologic settings and/or environmental conditions influencing the structure of this lectin, as well as the availability of glycosylated ligands in immune cells during the course of inflammatory responses. Here, we discuss the tissue-specific role of Gal-1 as a master regulator of inflammatory responses across different pathophysiologic settings, highlighting its potential role as a therapeutic target. The FECR for each farm was calculated in 2 ways, by the eggCounts package in R and by the Presidente formula (FECRT).   • Quantitative analysis of surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) spectra has been a critical step in trace level analysis. In this study, a novel variable selection method called interval combination iterative optimization approach coupled with SIMPLS (ICIOA-SIMPLS) was proposed for simultaneously predicting the volume ratios of various pesticides by quantitative analysis of the SERS spectra of the compounds. Four strategies, including interval selection, model population analysis (MPA), weighted bootstrap sampling (WBS) and soft shrinkage were combined in the current designed ICIOA-SIMPLS approach. Firstly, the SERS spectra were split into a series of equal-width spectral intervals. Secondly, WBS, as a random sampling method was applied based on the initial weights of spectral intervals to generate random combinations of spectral intervals, namely sub-datasets. On this basis, multivariate calibration sub-models were developed by applying SIMPLS followed by MPA to statistically analyze the outputs of sub-models and update the weights of spectral intervals. Finally, using an iterative optimization procedure the optimal spectral interval combination with the lowest root mean squares error of cross-validation (RMSECV) was searched in a soft shrinkage manner. For the sake of investigating the performance of ICIOA-SIMPLS, four methods including SIMPLS, VCPA-SIMPLS, VISSA-SIMPLS and ICIOA-SIMPLS were tested on two groups of SERS spectra for comparison. The findings revealed that the best prediction performance was obtained with ICIOA-SIMPLS. Hence, this proposed method offers a robust and effective variable selection strategy for quantitative analysis of spectroscopic datasets. This tutorial covers experimental design, sample preparation and analysis, signal processing and data treatment, and, finally, data analysis and its biological interpretation. Each section is accompanied by up-to-date literature to guide readers through the preparation and optimization of such a workflow, as well as practical information for avoiding or fixing some of the most frequently encountered pitfalls. This preliminary research is focused on the task of defining an equivalent standard column set between cryogenic and flow-modulation comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography (GC × GC) combined with mass spectrometry (MS). Cryogenic modulation (CM) was carried out by using a loop-type device, while the flow modulator used was a seven-port wafer chip, equipped with an external accumulation loop. Initially, a common low-polarity + mid-polarity CM GC × GC column set was selected (30 m × 0.25 mm ID × 0.25 μm df + 1.5 m × 0.25 mm ID × 0.25 μm df), a method was developed, and a GC × GC-MS fingerprint was attained (on a sample of bio-oil derived from coconut fibers). After, a column set with the same stationary phases was selected for the flow modulation GC × GC-MS method (20 m × 0.18 mm ID × 0.18 μm df + 5 m × 0.32 mm ID × 0.25 μm df), with the capability to provide a-similar-as-possible separation. A side-by-side measurement of several chromatography parameters (efficiency, peak capacity, resolution, peak widths, retention factors, elution temperatures) was made. An on-line cyclodextrin assisted sweeping-micellar electrokinetic chromatography (CD assisted sweeping-MEKC) was developed for the simultaneous separation and concentration of four neutral analytes (erianin, dendrophenol, naringenin and scoparone) in Dendrobium officinale Kimura et Migo (D. officinale). The D. officinale was directly determined by this on-line stacking method after simple extraction and dilution. The optimized background solution (BGS) was 50 mM phosphoric acid (PA) containing 100 mM SDS and 30% (v/v) methanol. The best separation and concentration performance of analytes dissolved in 90 mM CD and 100 mM PA was achieved in a short analysis time when injected at 50 mbar for 100 s. Compared with conventional sweeping-MEKC and MEKC method, significant improvement in enrichment efficiency was achieved by using this proposed method. A series of validation studies of the present method was performed under the optimal conditions. After optimization of all chromatographic conditions, near baseline separation of the nine carboxylic acids under investigation was achieved with a 2.5 mL/min flow rate on a 5 micron C18 silica column (100 x 4.6 mm) in under 20 min. The modified stationary phase showed an excellent capability to separate structural isomers in a reasonable time, markedly better that the bare C18 stationary phase. Plots of ln retention factor versus 1/temperature showed the expected linear relationship for the di- and tri-carboxylic aromatic acids (single retention mechanism likely) but a quadratic fit for the mono-carboxylic aromatic acids (dual retention mechanism likely).

  • The distribution of post-oil spill along the coast was interpreted using the images acquired after 21 August 2020. The accuracy of oil spill mapping was assessed by classifying the SAR-C data and decorrelated images of the MultiSpectral Instrument (MSI) data using the Parallelepiped supervised algorithm and confusion matrix. The results showed that the overall accuracy is on an average 91.72 and 98.77%, and Kappa coefficient 0.84 and 0.96, respectively. The satellite-derived results were validated with field studies. The MSI results showed the occurrence and spread of oil spill having different thicknesses, and supported the results of SAR. This study demonstrated the capability of Sentinel sensors and the potential of image processing methods to detect, monitor and assess oil spill impact on environment.
    The objective of this study was to discover whether notable differences in mobile and fixed-bearing kinematics occur during activity that promotes tibial rotation, and to compare these results with normal healthy kinematics. We hypothesized that rotating-platform knee replacements would exhibit greater rotation of the tibia relative to the fixed-bearing knee replacements.

    The in vivo motion of the tibia relative to the femur was measured in subjects with posterior stabilized fixed-bearing (FB) and rotating-platform (RP) total knee arthroplasties using a high-speed stereo radiography system during a lunge and gait with a change in direction (pivot).

    The in vivo internal/external (IE) rotation and anterior/posterior translation of the tibia relative to the femur was similar between mobile and fixed-bearing total knee prostheses during two activities of daily living that included an activity that challenged tibial IE rotation. Measurements of IE rotation in participants with RP had higher variability and significantly greater range between maximum internal and external rotation compared with FB participants. The greater amount of variability of RP was not unlike the healthy knee.

    The pattern of IE rotation and AP translation for both RP and FB designs were similar to healthy kinematics but with less IE rotation. The RP implants more closely replicated the asymmetrical posterior condylar translation and range of IE rotation of the healthy knee during activity that challenged tibial IE rotation.

    Physical activity is promoted in patients with hip or knee osteoarthritis (OA), yet little is known about its relationship with symptoms, functional limitations and Quality of Life (QoL). We investigated if OA-associated pain, functional limitations and QoL are associated with objectively measured physical activity in patients with end-stage hip/knee OA.

    Cross-sectional study including patients scheduled for primary total hip/knee arthroplasty. Patients wore an accelerometer (Activ8) with physical activity assessed over waking hours, and expressed as number of activity daily counts (ADC) per hour, %time spent on physical activity i.e. walking, cycling or running (%PA), and %time spent sedentary (%SB). Pain, functional limitations and joint-specific and general QoL were assessed with the Hip disability/Knee Injury and Osteoarthritis Outcome Score (HOOS/KOOS) and the Short Form (SF)-12. Multivariate linear regression models with the three to Z-scores transformed parameters of physical activity as dependent variables and adjusted for confounding, were conducted.

    49 hip and 48 knee OA patients were included. In hip and knee OA patients the mean number of ADC, %PA and %SB were 18.79±7.25 and 21.19±6.16, 14±6.4 and 15±5.0, and 66±10.5 and 68±8.7, respectively. In hip OA, better joint-specific and general QoL were associated with more ADC, (β 0.028; 95%CI0.007-0.048, β0.041; 95%CI0.010-0.071). Also, better general QoL was associated with the %PA (β 0.040, 95%CI0.007-0.073). No other associations were found.

In this work, we used a deep learning model called Mask R-CNN that is trained on uninfected and Plasmodium falciparum-infected red blood cells. Our predictive model produced reports at a rate 15 times faster than manual counting without compromising on accuracy. Another unique feature of our model is its ability to generate segmentation masks on top of bounding box classifications for immediate visualization, making it superior to existing models. Furthermore, with greater standardization, it holds **** potential to reduce errors arising from manual counting and save a significant amount of human resources, time, and cost.
