  • Previously, we demonstrated in test and validation cohorts that type I IFN (T1IFN) activity can predict non-response to tumor necrosis factor inhibitors (TNFi) in rheumatoid arthritis (RA). A previously healthy 8-year-old boy developed jaundice, hematuria, hemolytic anemia, thrombopenia, and mild acute kidney injury (AKI) in the context of a diarrhea without hypertension nor oliguria. Spontaneous and complete recovery was observed from the third day of admission. Persistent low C3 plasma levels after recovery raised the suspicion for aHUS, which prompted clinicians to discard the initial diagnosis of Shigatoxin-associated HUS (STEC-HUS). A thorough genetic and molecular study of the complement revealed the presence of an isolated novel pathogenic C3 mutation. The relatively benign clinical course of the disease as well as the finding of a de novo pathogenic C3 mutation are remarkable aspects of this case. IFC identified and quantified histone 4 citrullination (H4cit3) induced with several known NETosis stimuli (Ionophore, PMA, LPS, Hemin, and IL-8) following treatment periods ranging from 2 to 60 min. Its relationship with other alterations at nuclear and cellular level, such as nuclear decondensation and super-condensation, multi-lobulated nuclei vs. 1-lobe nuclei and cell membrane damage, were also quantified. We show that the early progress of the H4cit3 response in NETosis depends on the stimulus. Here, we exposed airway epithelial cells from children with and without CF to RV in vitro. Using RNA-Seq, we profiled the transcriptomic differences of CF and non-CF airway epithelial cells at baseline and in response to RV. There were only modest differences between CF and non-CF cells at baseline. In response to RV, there were 1,442 and 896 differentially expressed genes in CF and non-CF airway epithelial cells, respectively. The core antiviral responses in CF and non-CF airway epithelial cells were mediated through interferon signaling although type 1 and 3 interferon signaling, when measured, were reduced in CF airway epithelial cells following viral challenge consistent with previous reports.

  • Background Tuberculosis (TB) remains a foremost global public health threat. Active TB control needs geographically accessible health facilities that have quality diagnostics, equipment, supplies, medicines, and staff. Objective This study aimed at assessing the geographic distribution, physical accessibility, readiness and barriers of health facilities for TB services in East Gojjam zone, Ethiopia. Methods A convergent parallel design was applied using health facility and geographic data. Data on facility attributes, service availability and readiness were collected by inteviewing TB officers, laboratory heads and onsite facility visits. Coordinates of health facilities and kebele centroids were collected by GPS. We used ArcGIS 10.6 to measure Euclidean distance from each kebele centroids to the nearest health facility. Descriptive statistics were computed by using SPSS version 25. Barriers to TB service readiness were explored by in-depth interviews. NVivo12 was used to thematically analyze the qualitative ces due to low THSC and poor facility readiness. Barriers to TB service availability and readiness were health system related. Regular refresher training of health workers on TB, creating mechanisms to attract laboratory personnel to work in the study area and scaling up of sputum smear microscopy services, establishing an efficient mechanism for procurement, distribution, utilization and reporting of TB commodity supplies, and good management practices are crucial to enhance TB service readiness in the study zone. © 2020 Asemahagn et al.Tropical diseases remain severe threats to global health with acute or chronic debility. Several countries previously affected, including Japan and Tunisia, have eliminated the disease while others seek the same goal. Africa remains the most severely affected continent with vulnerable women and children, although the infection persists in South America and the Far East of Asia as well. Methods Students completed a voluntary school administered survey upon completion of their first year of medical school. Student responses to statements related to the EMT course and program were analyzed for classes matriculating in academic years 2012-2017. A one-way ANOVA with post hoc Tukey Honestly Significant Difference (HSD) was performed across all years for each survey statement. Results Mean response scores to statements related to the EMT course were higher when the EMT course was a standalone course and lower when integrated with biomedical science coursework. Students "strongly agreed" or "agreed" with most statements related to experiences and clinical skill development provided by the EMT program. Response rates ranged between 46-52 (88-100%) for 2012, 40-46 (74-85%) for 2013, 72-79 (88-96%) for 2014, 73-86 (71-83%) for 2015, 47-65 (46-63%) for 2016, 62-82 (59-78%) for 2017. A total of 134 adolescent pregnant women were recruited. The participants and their parents or legal guardians were informed of the study process at the antenatal clinic before their parents or legal guardians, granted written consent on their behalf.

    Ubiquitin-like with plant homeodomain and ring finger domains 1 (UHRF1) encodes a master regulator of DNA methylation that has emerged as an epigenetic driver in human cancers. To date, no studies have evaluated UHRF1 expression in malignant pleural mesothelioma (MPM). This study was undertaken to explore the therapeutic potential of targeting UHRF1 in MPM.

    Microarray, real-time quantitative reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction, immunoblot, and immunohistochemistry techniques were used to evaluate UHRF1 expression in normal mesothelial cells (NMCs) cultured with or without asbestos, MPM lines, normal pleura, and primary MPM specimens. The impact of UHRF1 expression on MPM patient survival was evaluated using two independent databases. RNA-sequencing, proliferation, invasion, and colony formation assays, and murine xenograft experiments were performed to evaluate gene expression and growth of MPM cells after biochemical or pharmacologic inhibition of UHRF1 expression.

    UHRF1 expression was significantly higher in MPM lines and specimens relative to NMC and normal pleura. Asbestos induced UHRF1 expression in NMC. The overexpression of UHRF1 was associated with decreased overall survival in patients with MPM.   • Topotecan is actively used in clinic, with its primary use being in treatment of various types of cancer. The approved administration routes are oral and intravenous. The purpose of this study was to investigate and identify pharmacokinetic profiles of different administration routes. We conducted pharmacokinetic studies on three different routes of administration in rats. Five rats in each group received a single dose of 4 mg/kg of topotecan hydrochloride intravenously, orally, or subcutaneously, and the concentrations of lactone and total forms of the drug in plasma, urine, and feces were quantified. Various pharmacokinetic parameters were compared statistically. Plasma concentrations of both the lactone and total forms at elimination phase following subcutaneous administration, were two times higher than was seen with oral administration and 10 times higher than with intravenous administration. Subcutaneous administration of topotecan showed pharmacokinetic profiles similar to sustained release. In addition, subcutaneous administration showed bioavailability from 88.05% (for lactone form) to 99.75% (for total form), and these values were four-five times greater than those of oral administration. The results of this non-clinical study will not only provide greater understanding of the in vivo pharmacokinetics of topotecan, but also be useful for development of additional formulations and/or administration routes.The Pacific Island nation of Samoa is marked by prevalent obesity and an increasing dependence on packaged foods likely to contain the endocrine disruptor bisphenol-A (BPA). We evaluated participant- and household-level characteristics associated with estimated dietary BPA exposure in Samoan mothers and their children and examined associations between dietary BPA exposure and body mass index (BMI) and abdominal circumference (AC). Dietary BPA exposure indices were estimated for 399 mother-child pairs by combining information from dietary questionnaires and relative concentrations of BPA measured in foods/beverages. We observed moderate to strong correlation between mother-child daily BPA indices (Spearman's rho = 0.7, p less then 0.0001). In mothers, we observed lower daily BPA indices in those who were less physically active (p = 0.0004) and living in homes with higher income (p = 0.00001). In children, we observed lower daily BPA indices in those living in homes with higher income (p = 0.0003) and following a less modern dietary pattern (p = 0.002), and higher daily BPA indices in those who were less physically active (p = 0.02). No significant associations were observed between daily BPA indices and BMI or AC. EEG data was collected during the visual stimulation paradigm, which consisted of four main phases, a pre-tetanus block, photic stimulus, early post-tetanus, and late post-tetanus. The amplitude of the N1b component of the pre-tetanus, early post-tetanus and late post-tetanus visual evoked potentials were calculated. Change in N1b amplitude was calculated by subtracting pre-tetanus N1b amplitude from early and late post-tetanus. Results demonstrated a significant difference between pre-tetanus N1b (M = -0.498 µV, SD = 0.858) and early N1b (M = -1.011 µV, SD = 1.088), t (18) = 2.761, p = 0.039, d = 0.633. No difference was observed between pre-tetanus N1b and late N1b (p = 0.36). In conclusion, our findings suggest that it is possible to induce changes in the amplitude of the visually evoked potential N1b waveform in the visual cortex of humans non-invasively. The purpose of the research was to propose assumptions for forging technology of producing a blank from AZ91 alloy with the use of flat and shaped anvils. Numerical examination for AZ91 magnesium alloy was carried out using the Forge®NxT commercial software. The rheological properties of the investigated alloy were determined on the basis of uniaxial compression tests carried out in the Gleeble 3800 metallurgical simulation system. The numerical analysis of the process of forging AZ91 alloy ingots on a press was conducted in the temperature range of 200-400 °C and at several forging passes.

  • We present a case of rapidly evolving progressive supranuclear palsy-like parkinsonism associated with anti-LGI-1 antibodies, suggesting that immune-mediated mechanisms might be involved in rapid progression of some atypical parkinsonisms.     A 78-year-old male diagnosed with papillary variant non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) presented with tremulousness that rapidly evolved into severe, diffuse myoclonus with prominent palatal involvement requiring intubation. The generalized myoclonus resolved with on levetiracetam, chemotherapy and immune modulation. While low titer positive P/Q type calcium channel autoantibodies were detected, it's etiologic relevance is unclear.

    This case highlights a rare neurologic paraneoplastic presentation of papillary NSCLC. It also illustrates the importance of monitoring airway safety when myoclonus is generalized.

    Multiple system atrophy (MSA) may develop levodopa-induced dyskinesia, which is dystonic and predominant in the orofacial region. We aimed to characterize the patterns of presynaptic dopaminergic degeneration in patients with MSA and dyskinesia using
    I-N-x-fluoropropyl-2b-carbo-methoxy-3b-(4-iodophenyl) nortropan single-photon emission computed tomography (
    I-FP-CIT SPECT).

    A single center cross-sectional retrospective study was conducted using consecutive chart review of patients with probable MSA who underwent
    I-FP-CIT SPECT. The degeneration patterns were compared between the groups with and without dyskinesia via visual assessment of
    I-FP-CIT SPECT images.

    Twenty-five patients with probable MSA who had undergone dopamine transporter imaging were identified (age [mean ± standard error], 62.5 ± 1.7 years; disease duration, 48.8 ± 7.0 months). Four of them presented dyskinesia and 21 of patients did not. Twenty-five patients with MSA were visually classified into five grades one Grade 1 (normal), two Grade 2 (eagle wing), three Grade 3 (mixed), nine Grade 4 (egg shape), and ten Grade 5 (burst striatum). All patients with MSA and dyskinesia were classified into Grade 5. Visual grading significantly correlated with disease duration and levodopa responsiveness.

    Several European studies examined the role of C9orf72 repeat expansion in patients with Huntington-disease like phenotypes (HD-L). The scope of our study is to investigate the expansion frequency in a Greek HD-L cohort and the meta-analysis of all published cases. This will be of use in genetic counseling of these cases.

We aimed to characterize the patterns of presynaptic dopaminergic degeneration in patients with MSA and dyskinesia using I-N-x-fluoropropyl-2b-carbo-methoxy-3b-(4-iodophenyl) nortropan single-photon emission computed tomography ( I-FP-CIT SPECT). A single center cross-sectional retrospective study was conducted using consecutive chart review of patients with probable MSA who underwent I-FP-CIT SPECT. The degeneration patterns were compared between the groups with and without dyskinesia via visual assessment of I-FP-CIT SPECT images. Twenty-five patients with probable MSA who had undergone dopamine transporter imaging were identified (age [mean ± standard error], 62.5 ± 1.7 years; disease duration, 48.8 ± 7.0 months). Four of them presented dyskinesia and 21 of patients did not. Twenty-five patients with MSA were visually classified into five grades one Grade 1 (normal), two Grade 2 (eagle wing), three Grade 3 (mixed), nine Grade 4 (egg shape), and ten Grade 5 (burst striatum). It involved 29 SRCC and 99 CCRCC patient cases, and to each case, 1029 features were collected from each of the corticomedullary phase (CMP) and nephrographic phase (NP) image. Then, features were selected by using the least absolute shrinkage and selection operator regression method and the selected features of the two phases were explored to build three radiomics approaches for SRCC and CCRCC classification. Meanwhile, subjective CT findings were filtered by univariate analysis to construct a radiomics model and further selected by Akaike information criterion for integrating with the selected image features to build the fifth model. Finally, the radiomics models utilized the multivariate logistic regression method for classification and the performance was assessed with receiver operating characteristic curve (ROC) and DeLong test. The radiomics models based on the CMP, the NP, the CMP and NP, the subjective findings, and the combined features achieved the AUC (area under the curve) value of 0.772, 0.938, 0.966, 0.792, and 0.974, respectively. Significant difference was found in AUC values between each of the CMP radiomics model (0.0001 ≤ p ≤ 0.0051) and the subjective findings model (0.0006 ≤ p ≤ 0.0079) and each of the NP radiomics model, the CMP and NP radiomics model, and the combined model. One machine learning model for predicting DNA-binding proteins based on evolutionary features by using Chou's 5-step rule is put forward. The results show that great predicted performance is obtained on benchmark dataset PDB1075 and independent dataset PDB186, achieving the accuracy of 86.05% and 75.30%, respectively.   • Focal adhesion kinase (FAK) mediates vital cellular pathways during development. Despite its necessity, how FAK regulates and integrates with other signals during early embryogenesis remains poorly understood. We found that the loss of Fak1a impaired epiboly, convergent extension and hypoblast cell migration in zebrafish embryos. We also observed a clear disturbance in cortical actin at the blastoderm margin and distribution of yolk syncytial nuclei. In addition, we investigated a possible link between Fak1a and a well-known gastrulation regulator, Wnt5b, and revealed that the overexpression of fak1a or wnt5b could cross-rescue convergence defects induced by a wnt5b or fak1a antisense morpholino (MO), respectively. Wnt5b and Fak1a were shown to converge in regulating Rac1 and Cdc42, which could synergistically rescue wnt5b and fak1a morphant phenotypes. Furthermore, we generated several alleles of fak1a mutants using CRISPR/Cas9, but those mutants only revealed mild gastrulation defects. However, injection of a subthreshold level of the wnt5b MO induced severe gastrulation defects in fak1a mutants, which suggested that the upregulated expression of wnt5b might complement the loss of Fak1a. Collectively, we demonstrated that a functional interaction between Wnt and FAK signalling mediates gastrulation cell movements via the possible regulation of Rac1 and Cdc42 and subsequent actin dynamics.Aim We sought to deepen understanding of embodied experiences of autism by examining how autistic bloggers describe and discuss autism.Methods Working within a qualitative description approach, we sampled 40 blogs written by people who identify as autistic. We conducted a directed content analysis, applying a codebook that was generated using themes from a previous study, while remaining open to additional theme generation and elimination.Results The rich description in the blog posts support our previous finding that autism is a highly embodied experience including challenges with movement control. Additionally, we found arousal regulation (ability to maintain a calm yet alert state) to be an important embodied experience for the bloggers.Conclusions Our findings support a conceptualization of autism that sees embodiment, movement and arousal regulation as important elements of autism. However, conventional carriers generally exhibit negative charge and surface hydrophobicity, which are unbeneficial for biofilm formation. In this study, novel surface-modified carriers with favourable hydrophilicity (surface contact angle dropped to 60.2 ± 2.3°) and positive surface charge (+11.7 ± 1.1 mV, pH 7.0) were prepared via polymer blending and implemented for SND in continuous flow MBBR system. Results indicated SND started up quickly with more biomass in MBBR filled with surface-modified carriers. At the operation condition of low dissolved oxygen level (0.75 ± 0.25 mg/L), pH of 7.5 ± 0.5, 23 ± 2°C and C/N ratio of 7, COD, NH4+-N and TN removal efficiencies were 90.5%, 88.6% and 76.6% respectively in MBBR filled with surface-modified carriers, which ensured the effluent met the first grade A of the Discharge Standard of China. On the contrary, COD, NH4+-N and TN removal efficiencies were 89.7%, 82.3% and 60.4% respectively in the control reactors filled with conventional polyethylene carriers. The worse performance of the control reactor was mainly attributed to the less biomass and lower functional bacteria abundance developed on conventional carriers. Additionally, we found arousal regulation (ability to maintain a calm yet alert state) to be an important embodied experience for the bloggers.Conclusions Our findings support a conceptualization of autism that sees embodiment, movement and arousal regulation as important elements of autism. We then reviewed the current evidence that is beginning to unravel the roles of l-serine both in the healthy and diseased brain, leading to the notion that this specific metabolic pathway connects glial metabolism with synaptic activity and plasticity. This review describes the current and emerging developments within this field and highlights the challenges and potential solutions, that will pave-the-way towards their clinical translation.To harness the intrinsic transport properties of albumin yet improve the therapeutic index of current in situ albumin-binding prodrugs, we developed albumin-drug conjugates with a controlled loading that achieved better antitumor efficacy. Here, model drug monomethyl auristatin E (MMAE) was conjugated ex vivo to Cys34 of albumin via a cathepsin B-sensitive dipeptide linker to ensure that all drug would be bound specifically to albumin. The resulting albumin-drug conjugate with a drug to albumin ratio (DAR) of 1 (ALDC1) retained the native secondary structure of albumin compared to conjugate with a higher DAR of 3 (ALDC3). ALDC1 exhibited improved drug release and cytotoxicity compared to ALDC3 in vitro.   • From each individual image, 16 features are extracted and the feature dimension is reduced to 13 using a sequential backward feature (SBF) selection algorithm. The optimal features are obtained from a total of 205 fundus images, which consists of 99 NVD positive and 106 NVD negative images. This paper attains an average accuracy of 98.75%, the specificity of 100%, the sensitivity of 97.8%, and area under the curve (AUC) as 100% when tested over image selected randomly.The quality of the medical image plays a major role in decision making by the radiologists. There exists a visual differentiation between the normal scene color images and medical images. Due to the low illumination and unavailability of the color parameter, medical images require more attention by radiologists for decision making. In this paper a new approach is proposed that enhances the quality of the Magnetic Resonance (MR) images. Proposed approach uses the spectral information present in form of Amplitude and Frequency within the MR image slices for an enhancement. The extracted enhanced spectral information gives better visualization as compared with original signal image generated from MR scanner. Next, an applied torque with adaption is synthesized for the attitude tracking to a command attitude. This command attitude, as well as the applied thrust, is extracted from the synthesized command force without singularity. It is shown in terms of the Lyapunov theory that driven by the proposed adaptive distributed control algorithm, the concerned coordinated formation control of multiple VTOL UAVs is achieved asymptotically. Finally, an illustrative example is simulated to validate the effectiveness of the proposed control algorithm.Data-driven evolutionary algorithms (DDEAs) aim to utilize data and surrogates to drive optimization, which is useful and efficient when the objective function of the optimization problem is expensive or difficult to access. However, the performance of DDEAs relies on their surrogate quality and often deteriorates if the amount of available data decreases. To solve these problems, this article proposes a new DDEA framework with perturbation-based ensemble surrogates (DDEA-PES), which contain two efficient mechanisms. The first is a diverse surrogate generation method that can generate diverse surrogates through performing data perturbations on the available data. The second is a selective ensemble method that selects some of the prebuilt surrogates to form a final ensemble surrogate model. By combining these two mechanisms, the proposed DDEA-PES framework has three advantages, including larger data quantity, better data utilization, and higher surrogate accuracy. To validate the effectiveness of the proposed framework, this article provides both theoretical and experimental analyses. For the experimental comparisons, a specific DDEA-PES algorithm is developed as an instance by adopting a genetic algorithm as the optimizer and radial basis function neural networks as the base models. The experimental results on widely used benchmarks and an aerodynamic airfoil design real-world optimization problem show that the proposed DDEA-PES algorithm outperforms some state-of-the-art DDEAs. Moreover, when compared with traditional nondata-driven methods, the proposed DDEA-PES algorithm only requires about 2% computational budgets to produce competitive results.To cultivate professional sports referees, we develop a sports referee training system, which can recognize whether a trainee wearing the Myo armband makes correct judging signals while watching a prerecorded professional game. The system has to correctly recognize a set of gestures related to official referee's signals (ORSs) and another set of gestures used to intuitively interact with the system. These two gesture sets involve both large motion and subtle motion gestures, and the existing sensor-based methods using handcrafted features do not work well on recognizing all kinds of these gestures. In this work, deep belief networks (DBNs) are utilized to learn more representative features for hand gesture recognition, and selective handcrafted features are combined with the DBN features to achieve more robust recognition results. Moreover, a hierarchical recognition scheme is designed to first recognize the input gesture as a large or subtle motion gesture, and the corresponding classifiers for large motion gestures and subtle motion gestures are further used to obtain the final recognition result.

  • The advent of hundreds of new compounds aimed at the substance misuse market has posed new analytical challenges. A semi-quantitative liquid chromatography-high resolution mass spectrometry (LC-HRMS) method has been developed to detect exposure to two novel stimulants, mephedrone and ethylphenidate, and selected metabolites. Centrifuged urine (50 µL) was diluted with LC eluent containing internal standards (mephedrone-d3, methylphenidate-d9, and ritalinic acid-d10, all 0.02 mg/L) (450 µL). Intra- and inter-assay accuracy and precision were within ± 15% and less then 6% respectively, for all analytes. The limit of detection was 0.01 mg/L all analytes. Urine samples from mephedrone and ethylphenidate users were analyzed using immunoassay (amphetamine-group CEDIA) and LC-HRMS. Ethylphenidate, mephedrone, and selected metabolites all had low cross-reactivity ( less then 1%) with the immunoassay. https://www.selleckchem.com/products/curzerene.html The median (range) amphetamine-group CEDIA concentration in urine samples from mephedrone users (N = 11) was 0.30 ( less then 0.041-3.04) mg/L, with only one sample giving a positive CEDIA result.     Telemedicine is rapidly gaining traction as a way to reduce costs and connect patients with medical experts outside their local communities. Peritonsillar abscess (PTA) is a logical pathologic condition to evaluate for effectiveness of remote diagnosis given its prevalence and the paucity of on-site otolaryngologists at many institutions.

    To explore the potential of otolaryngology telemedical consultation in triaging and diagnosing patients with suspected PTA.

    A comparative effectiveness research study was conducted from January 1 to June 30, 2018, at 3 tertiary care hospitals among 31 consecutive patients aged 18 to 85 years for whom the otolaryngology department was consulted to assess for PTA. Statistical analysis was conducted from July 1 to September 30, 2018.

    Telemedical evaluation of suspected PTA by 5 attending otolaryngologists blinded to patients' history aside from the chief report of odynophagia. Otolaryngologists rated each patient video on whether they believed the patient had a PTA and d oropharyngeal video alone, otolaryngologists are able to determine, with high sensitivity, which patients require prompt otolaryngology evaluation. The recording of consistently high-quality video using a standard smartphone camera is achievable without formal training.Many studies demonstrate the importance of the commensal microbiomes to animal health and development. However, the initial community assembly process is poorly understood. It is unclear to what extent the hosts select for their commensal microbiota, whether stochastic processes contribute, and how environmental conditions affect the community assembly. We investigated community assembly in Atlantic cod larvae exposed to distinct microbial metacommunities. We aimed to quantify ecological processes influencing community assembly in cod larvae and to elucidate the complex relationship between the bacteria of the environment and the fish. Selection within the fish was the major determinant for community assembly, but drift resulted in inter-individual variation. The environmental bacterial communities were highly dissimilar from those associated with the fish. Still, differences in the environmental bacterial communities strongly influenced the fish communities. The most striking difference was an excessive dominance of a single OTU (Arcobacter) for larvae reared in two of the three systems. These larvae were exposed to environments with higher fractions of opportunistic bacteria, and we hypothesise that detrimental host-microbe interactions might have made the fish susceptible to Arcobacter colonisation. Despite strong selection within the host, this points to a possibility to steer the metacommunity towards mutualistic host-microbe interactions and improved fish health and survival.The aim of this work was to assess the temporal patterns in the community composition of phytoplankton (PCC) and bacterioplankton (BCC) in two interconnected and hypertrophic Pampean shallow lakes in Argentina. Factors shaping their community dynamics and community temporal covariations were also analysed. We performed 4 years of seasonal samplings (2012-2016) and communities were studied by the Utermöhl approach (PCC) and Illumina MiSeq sequencing (BCC). We found marked seasonal variations in both communities and inter-annual variations with decreasing microbial community similarities during the study. We also observed covariation in community-level dynamics among PCC and ****within and between shallow lakes. The within-lake covariations remained positive and significant, while controlling for the effects of intrinsic (environmental) and extrinsic (temporal and meteorological) factors, suggesting a community coupling mediated by intrinsic biotic interactions. Algal-bacterial associations between different taxa of phytoplankton and bacterioplankton within each lake were also found. PCC was mainly explained by pure regional extrinsic (17-21%) and intrinsic environmental (8-9%) factors, while ****was explained by environmental (8-10%) and biotic interactions with phytoplankton (7-8%). Our results reveal that the influence of extrinsic regional factors can be channeled to bacterioplankton through both environmental (i.e. water temperature) and phytoplankton effects.Studies of controlled lab animals and natural populations represent two insightful extremes of microbiota research. We bridged these two approaches by transferring lab-bred female C57BL/6 **** from a conventional mouse facility to an acclimation room and then to an outdoor enclosure, to investigate how the gut microbiota changes with environment. **** residing under constant conditions served as controls.
