  • Introduction The Activities-specific Balance Confidence scale is the most used tool to quantify balance confidence, a psychological factor related to balance impairment among older adults. Objective To investigate the validity and reliability of the original and short versions of the Brazilian Activities-specific Balance Confidence scales, to determine cutoff points for balance impairments and to identify the determinants of balance confidence of community-dwelling older adults.Methods The validity of both versions of the scales was verified by correlating its results with postural balance, fear of falling and mobility (n = 105). Both scales were administered with a 30 min (interrater reliability, n = 158) and 1-week intervals (intrarater reliability, n = 105). Age standardization was applied to alleviate the comparison between gender, different regions and years.Results The number of dispatched prescriptions of antibiotics from dentists was reduced with 31% during the study period. 10% of the visits to a dentist generated an antibiotic prescription corresponding to 7% of the total number of antibiotic prescriptions. A decline in prescription was observed after publication of national recommendations for antibiotics prophylaxis in 2012 and antibiotic treatment in 2014. Unexplained geographical and gender differences in the rates of prescription were seen.Conclusions Data indicates a correlation between introduction of governmental strategies to reduce antibiotic usage and declining antibiotic prescription. We aimed to compare the altered levels of spexin in women with and without polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) and to find out if there was any association between spexin levels and hormonal-metabolic parameters in women with PCOS. Eighty subjects with PCOS and 80 age- and body mass index (BMI)-matched subjects with a normal menstrual cycle were enrolled into the current case control study. Spexin levels were measured by ELISA. Spexin levels were significantly lower in PCOS subjects. Spexin showed a negative correlation with insulin resistance, BMI and androgens in PCOS women. Binary logistic regression analysis showed that the risk of having PCOS was associated with low levels of spexin. Decreased spexin levels were inversely associated with androgens and unfavourable metabolic profiles in PCOS subjects, suggesting that the inter-related roles of spexin are in the different metabolic and hormonal pathways of PCOS.

  • Although the health of the snails exposed to Cd, Hg and PAHs was altered, TL length in haemocytes was not disturbed, suggesting a high capacity of this snail species to maintain its TLs in haemocytes under chemical stress. These results first address TL length in snails and reveal that the relationship commonly proposed for vertebrates between TL shortening and ageing or exposure to contaminants cannot be generalized.Despite of significant progress in remediation of Cr(VI) or Hg(II) pollution by microorganisms, study on the reduction of both Cr(VI) and Hg(II) by the same microbial strain was not reported so far, which is actually important for bioremediation of contaminated sites with multiple heavy metals. In this study, Pseudomonas umsongensis CY-1 was newly isolated from chromium-contaminated soil and showed remediation potentials for both Cr(VI) and Hg(II) pollution. The highest Cr(VI) (93.9%) and Hg(II) (82.8%) reduction rates were obtained at the initial concentration of 5 mg/L. Comparison between removal by resting cells and heat-treated resting cells demonstrated that P. umsongensis CY-1 removed Cr(VI) and Hg(II) from Tris-HCl buffer (pH 7.0) mainly through reduction instead of adsorption. By comparing the Cr(VI) and Hg(II) reduction rates of different cellular fractions, it was found that Cr(VI) and Hg(II) reductions mainly happened in the cytoplasm of P. umsongensis CY-1, which were further demonstrated by Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) analysis. Furthermore, analysis of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy demonstrated that the reduction products of Cr(VI) and Hg(II) were mainly in the form of Cr(III) and Hg (0), respectively. The findings in this study will provide a guide for further insights in the bioremediation of contaminated sites with multiple heavy metals.Background Incorporating consumers' voices in tertiary education curricula is an ongoing initiative of educators of health professions in order to facilitate students' readiness for consumer-based practice and to meet accreditation standards. Design State-of-the-art review DATA SOURCES Electronic literature searches were conducted in PubMed, ERIC, CINAHL, and Web of Science for English-language articles describing the development and testing of direct observation tools for assessing PCC published until March 2017. Review methods Three authors independently assessed the records for eligibility. Duplicates were removed and articles were excluded that were irrelevant based on title and/or abstract. All remaining articles were read in full text. A ugh all may serve formative purposes, evidence supporting their use in summative evaluations is limited. Patients were not involved in the development of any tool, which seems intrinsically paradoxical given the aims of PCC. The tools may be useful for providing trainee feedback; however, rigorously tested and patient-derived tools are needed for high-stakes use.Background The number of people with neurocognitive disorder is increasing, and the majority of them are cared for by informal caregivers in the community. Mental health problems are common among caregivers, however, professional support for them is often limited. Non-pharmacological self-help interventions, such as bibliotherapy, may improve mental well-being and has the potential for being integrated into clinical or social services. Objectives To explore what types of bibliotherapy have been used for improving the mental well-being of informal caregivers of people with neurocognitive disorders, and the effect on mental well-being outcomes. Design A systematic review and meta-analysis. Review methods Six databases were searched for relevant articles on July 1, 2019. Clinical trial registries and the reference lists of included studies were also searched. Both randomized controlled trials and quasi-experimental studies were included. The Cochrane Collaboration risk of bias tool for randomized controlled tria with problem behaviours at Z = 2.44 (I2 = 0, SMD = 0.36, 95%CI = 0.05 to 0.67, p = .02), however, the effect on self-efficacy for obtaining respite was not significant (I2 = 0, SMD = 0.17, 95%CI = -0.16 to 0.49, p = .32). The effect on decreasing state anxiety was significant at Z = 2.30 (I2 = 22%, SMD = -0.22, 95% CI = -0.41 to -0.33, p = .02). Conclusions Bibliotherapy showed positive effects on reducing depression, improving self-efficacy for dealing with problem behaviors and reducing anxiety among informal caregivers. The effects on reducing depression should be viewed with caution due to high heterogeneity. The effects on other mental well-being outcomes are inconclusive due to limited number of studies and this underscores the need for further research.

  • Purinergic signalling is involved in physiological processes, particularly during ischemia-reperfusion injuries for which it has a protective effect. The purpose of this work was to develop a method for simultaneous quantification of eight nucleotides and adenosine in biological matrices by liquid chromatography coupled with high-resolution mass spectrometry. A method was developed that was sufficiently robust to quantify the targeted analytes in 20 min with good sensitivity. Analysis of extracellular media from cultured endothelial cells detected the release of nucleotides and adenosine during 2 h of hypoxia. The quantification of cylic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP) allowed to establish a dose-response curve after receptor stimulation. Therefore, our method allows us to study the involvement of nucleotides in various processes in both the intracellular and extracellular compartment.Commercial benzamide fungicides are applied to crops to control damage caused by oomycete fungi and are used as veterinary pharmaceuticals in aquaculture. The mechanism of action of these fungicides is to induce mitotic arrest via binding to beta-tubulin, thus inhibiting tubulin polymerization. However, there are little toxicity data available for benzimidazole fungicides in fish. To address this knowledge gap, we conducted zebrafish embryo toxicity tests to assess deformities, survival, and sub-lethal responses following exposure to zoxamide (0, 0.5, 1.0, 2.5, 5.0 and 10 μM zoxamide). We hypothesized that skeletal deformities would be prevalent in zebrafish due to its mechanism of inhibiting beta-tubulin polymerization. Zoxamide was relatively toxic to zebrafish embryos and larvae, and survival was reduced ∼50 % at 2 days post fertilization (dpf) with 10 μM exposure and over time at 6 dpf, 2.5 μM exposure reduced survival by ∼20 %. Frequency of hatch was also reduced/delayed in zebrafish at 3 dpf with >2.5 μM zoxamide. Pericardial edema, body length shortening, and spine curvature were observed in larvae exposed to >5 μM. Mitochondrial bioenergetics were assessed in ∼30 hpf embryos (24-hour exposure) using an XFe24 Flux Analyzer and regression analysis revealed a negative relationship between basal respiration and zoxamide concentration. Superoxide dismutase 1 and caspase 3 mRNA levels were both decreased in 6 dpf larvae exposed to 2.5 μM zoxamide, but were not changed in expression at 0.5 nor 1 μM zoxamide. Continuous 6-day exposure to zoxamide reduced larval activity at 2.5 μM; conversely a 24-hour exposure (at 5-6 dpf) induced hyperactivity at 5 μM suggesting dose and time dependent effects on fish behavior. Based on sub-lethal endpoints, we conceptualize an adverse outcome pathway for chemicals that inhibit tubulin polymerization.Objective Infection is the most critical cause of early death after liver transplantation (LT). However, the effect of preoperative body composition on bacteremia after LT is unclear. The aim of this study was to examine the effects of preoperative body composition on bacteremia after living donor LT (LDLT). Methods The study comprised 277 patients who underwent LDLT at Kyoto University, Kyoto, Japan, between January 2008 and June 2016. We evaluated body composition parameters including skeletal muscle mass index (SMI), intramuscular adipose tissue content (IMAC), and visceral-to-subcutaneous adipose tissue area ratio (VSR) using preoperative plain computed tomography at the L3 level. We compared the incidence of bacteremia, species, period of antibiotic administration, mortality due to bacteremia, and survival rates according to the number of abnormal body composition factors (low SMI, high IMAC, and high VSR).     Purinergic signalling is involved in physiological processes, particularly during ischemia-reperfusion injuries for which it has a protective effect. The purpose of this work was to develop a method for simultaneous quantification of eight nucleotides and adenosine in biological matrices by liquid chromatography coupled with high-resolution mass spectrometry. A method was developed that was sufficiently robust to quantify the targeted analytes in 20 min with good sensitivity. Analysis of extracellular media from cultured endothelial cells detected the release of nucleotides and adenosine during 2 h of hypoxia. The quantification of cylic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP) allowed to establish a dose-response curve after receptor stimulation. Therefore, our method allows us to study the involvement of nucleotides in various processes in both the intracellular and extracellular compartment.Commercial benzamide fungicides are applied to crops to control damage caused by oomycete fungi and are used as veterinary pharmaceuticals in aquaculture. The mechanism of action of these fungicides is to induce mitotic arrest via binding to beta-tubulin, thus inhibiting tubulin polymerization. However, there are little toxicity data available for benzimidazole fungicides in fish. To address this knowledge gap, we conducted zebrafish embryo toxicity tests to assess deformities, survival, and sub-lethal responses following exposure to zoxamide (0, 0.5, 1.0, 2.5, 5.0 and 10 μM zoxamide). We hypothesized that skeletal deformities would be prevalent in zebrafish due to its mechanism of inhibiting beta-tubulin polymerization. Zoxamide was relatively toxic to zebrafish embryos and larvae, and survival was reduced ∼50 % at 2 days post fertilization (dpf) with 10 μM exposure and over time at 6 dpf, 2.5 μM exposure reduced survival by ∼20 %. Frequency of hatch was also reduced/delayed in zebrafish at 3 dpf with >2.5 μM zoxamide. Pericardial edema, body length shortening, and spine curvature were observed in larvae exposed to >5 μM.   • The handling of conventional enzyme- metal organic framework (MOF) composites is big challenge due to their nano-sized and lightweight structure with low density. Also, conventional MOFs are derived from non-renewable petroleum feedstock which makes them inherent toxic and non-biodegradable. To overcome these difficulties, recently, green, renewable framework material composite, biological metal-organic frameworks (bio-MOFs) have intrigued as a novel class of porous materials. Here, glucoamylase was encapsulated within ZIF-8 in presence of functionalized carboxymethylcellulose (CMC) at mild aqueous conditions. The successful formation of glucoamylase bio-MOF was confirmed by Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR), X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). In thermal stability, glucoamylase bio-MOF exhibited 187 % enhanced thermal stability in the temperature range of 55-75 °C as compared to native form. Further, glucoamylase bio-MOF was recycled for 5 cycles and compared their activity with traditional glucoamylase MOF. Glucoamylase bio-MOF showed significantly improved recyclability which was attributed by adhesive nature of CMC. Search terms for Medline included 'clinical', 'faeces', 'gastrointestinal secretions', 'stool', 'COVID-19', 'SARS-CoV-2' and '2019-nCoV'. Additional searches were done in AJG, Gastroenterology, Gut, Lancet Gastroenterology and Hepatology, The WHO Database, CEBM, NEJM, social media and the NICE, bioRxiv and medRxiv preprints. Data were extracted concerning the type of test, number and timing of positive samples, incidence of positive faecal tests after negative nasopharyngeal swabs and evidence of viable faecal virus or faeco-oral transmission of the virus. Results There were 26 relevant articles identified. Combining study results demonstrated that 53·9% of those tested for faecal RNA were positive. Duration of faecal viral shedding ranged from 1 to 33 days after a negative nasopharyngeal swab with one result remaining positive 47 days after onset of symptoms. There is insufficient evidence to suggest that COVID-19 is transmitted via faecally shed virus. Conclusion There is a high rate of positive PCR tests with persistence of SARS-CoV-2 in faecal samples of patients with COVID-19. Further research is needed to confirm if this virus is viable and the degree of transmission through the faeco-oral route. This may have important implications on isolation, recommended precautions and protective equipment for interventional procedures involving the gastrointestinal tract.At present, there is no definitive antiviral treatment for coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). We describe our early experience with remdesivir in four critically ill COVID-19 patients. Patients received a 200 mg loading dose, followed by 100 mg daily intravenously for up to 10 days. One patient experienced a torsade de pointes requiring cardiac resuscitation and one died due to multiple organ failure. Three patients showed biochemical signs of liver injury. Lymphocyte count increased in all patients soon after remdesivir initiation. Nasal swab SARS-CoV-2 RNA became negative in three of four patients after 3 days of therapy. We observed an in vivo virological effect of remdesivir in four critically ill, COVID-19 patients, coupled with a significant burden of adverse events. Although limited by the low number of subjects studied, our preliminary experience may be relevant for clinicians treating COVID-19.Covid-19 infection has the potential for targeting the central nervous system and several neurological symptoms have been described in patients with severe respiratory distress. CSF analyses during the acute stage were negative for SARS-CoV-2, positive for pleocytosis and hyperproteinorrachia, and showed increased IL-8 and TNF-α concentrations while other infectious or autoimmune disorders were excluded. We sought to determine whether hydroxychloroquine (HCQ) application may reduce the death risk of critically ill COVID-19 patients. In this retrospective study, we included 550 critically ill COVID-19 patients who need mechanical ventilation in Tongji Hospital, Wuhan, from February 1, 2020 to April 4, 2020. All 550 patients received comparable basic treatments including antiviral drugs and antibiotics, and 48 of them were treated with oral HCQ treatment (200 mg twice a day for 7-10 days) in addition to the basic treatments. Primary endpoint is fatality of patients, and inflammatory cytokine levels were compared between HCQ and non-hydroxychloroquine (NHCQ) treatments. We found that fatalities are 18.8% (9/48) in HCQ group, which is significantly lower than 47.4% (238/502) in the NHCQ group (P less then 0.001). The time of hospital stay before patient death is 15 (10-21) days and 8 (4-14) days for the HCQ and NHCQ groups, respectively (P less then 0.05). The levels of inflammatory cytokine IL-6 were significantly reduced from 22.2 (8.3-118.9) pg mL-1 at the beginning of the treatment to 5.2 (3.0-23.4) pg mL-1 (P less then 0.05) at the end of the treatment in the HCQ group but there is no change in the NHCQ group. These data demonstrate that addition of HCQ on top of the basic treatments is highly effective in reducing the fatality of critically ill patients of COVID-19 through attenuation of inflammatory cytokine storm.   • Objective The study aimed to assess the transverse craniofacial dimensions of patients (age, 7-14 years) with unilateral cleft lip and palate (UCLP), compare these dimensions with those of noncleft individuals, and identify the correlations between the nasal and maxillary transverse widths of patients with UCLP. Design A cross-sectional study. Participants Eighty patients operated on for complete UCLP (UCLP group; 35 girls, 45 boys; median age 10.7 [7.9-14] years) and 80 age- and sex-matched noncleft individuals (control group; 35 girls, 45 boys; median age 10.7 [7.3-14] years). Interventions Interorbital, bizygomatic, nasal, maxillary skeletal, maxillary molar, mandibular molar, and antegonial width measurements were performed using posteroanterior cephalometric radiographs. Intergroup comparisons were conducted by using the independent samples t-test and Mann-Whitney U test. Correlation between the variables was examined using Pearson correlation analysis. Results The bizygomatic, maxillary skeletal and molar, mandibular molar, and antegonial widths in the UCLP group were significantly less than those in the control group (P less then .05). A positive correlation was found between the maxillary skeletal and nasal widths (r = 0.550, P less then .001) and between the maxillary molar and nasal widths (r = 0.560, P less then .001). Conclusions In individuals with UCLP, the bizygomatic, maxillary skeletal and molar, mandibular molar, and antegonial widths were significantly less than those in noncleft individuals. As the maxillary skeletal and dental widths presented a positive correlation with the nasal width, a decrease in nasal width must be considered when maxillary constriction is noted.Concordance in caregivers' and children's reports of children's trauma-related symptoms is often low, and symptom discrepancies are associated with negative clinical implications. The aim of the current study was to examine the degree of concordance between children's and caregivers' reports of trauma-related difficulties and determine whether any child or family characteristics were associated with symptom agreement. Three hundred thirteen trauma-exposed children (M = 9.55, SD = 1.77; 65.2% girls, 51.3% Black) and their nonoffending caregivers seeking treatment were included in the study. Children's and caregivers' reports of trauma-related difficulties were related, but low intraclass correlation coefficients indicated poor concordance across symptoms. Child's gender was associated with levels of concordance for several trauma-related difficulties (e.g., anxiety, depression, anger, dissociation, and sexual concerns), with lower symptom agreement for girls. Child's age, minority status, and relationship to caregiver emerged as factors related to levels of concordance for certain trauma-related symptoms. Child's gender, age, minority status, and relationship to caregiver may predict symptom discordance for select trauma-related difficulties, whereas other family factors such as caregiver marital status and income may be unrelated. Given the importance of caregiver-child concordance in treatment success, additional research should investigate other factors that may influence trauma-related symptom agreement.Objective To evaluate characteristics of congenital heart disease (CHD) in patients with cleft lip and/or palate (CL/P) and assess potential associations with cleft outcomes. Design Retrospective review of all patients with CL/P who underwent primary cleft treatment from 2009 to 2015. Setting Children's Hospital Los Angeles, a tertiary hospital. Patients Exclusion criteria included microform cleft lip diagnosis, international patients, and patients presenting for secondary repair or revision after primary repair at another institution. Main outcomes measured Patient demographics, prenatal and birth characteristics, CL/P characteristics, syndromic status, postoperative complications, and other outcomes were analyzed relative to CHD diagnoses and management. Patients with CL/P with (+CHD) were compared to those without (-CHD) CHD using χ2 tests and analysis of variance. Results Among 575 patients with CL/P, 83 (14.4%) had CHD. Congenital heart disease rates were significantly higher in patients with cleft palate (CP) compared to other cleft types (χ2, P = .009). Eighty-one (97.6%) out of 83 +CHD patients were diagnosed prior to initial CL/P surgical assessment. Twenty-three (27.7%) +CHD patients required surgical repair of 10 cardiac anomalies prior to cleft care. Congenital heart disease was associated with delayed CP repair and increased rates of fistula in isolated patients with CP. Conclusions Congenital heart disease is known to be more prevalent in patients with CL/P. These data suggest the condition is particularly increased in patients with CP. Severe forms of CHD are diagnosed and treated prior to cleft care however postoperative fistula may be more common in patients with CHD. This study uses secondary data analysis of the Canadian Incidence Study of Reported Child Abuse and Neglect 2008 to explore what case and worker factors predict the provision of ongoing child welfare services. Multilevel modeling was used to assess the relationship between independent variables and the decision to provide ongoing services; analyses included 2,296 children and 555 workers. Case and worker characteristics, including worker training and worker position, predicted ongoing child welfare services suggesting that further research examining the role of what worker characteristics impact child welfare decisions is warranted and essential.

Participants Eighty patients operated on for complete UCLP (UCLP group; 35 girls, 45 boys; median age 10.7 [7.9-14] years) and 80 age- and sex-matched noncleft individuals (control group; 35 girls, 45 boys; median age 10.7 [7.3-14] years). Interventions Interorbital, bizygomatic, nasal, maxillary skeletal, maxillary molar, mandibular molar, and antegonial width measurements were performed using posteroanterior cephalometric radiographs. Intergroup comparisons were conducted by using the independent samples t-test and Mann-Whitney U test. Correlation between the variables was examined using Pearson correlation analysis. Results The bizygomatic, maxillary skeletal and molar, mandibular molar, and antegonial widths in the UCLP group were significantly less than those in the control group (P less then .05). A positive correlation was found between the maxillary skeletal and nasal widths (r = 0.550, P less then .001) and between the maxillary molar and nasal widths (r = 0.560, P less then .001). Conclusions In individuals with UCLP, the bizygomatic, maxillary skeletal and molar, mandibular molar, and antegonial widths were significantly less than those in noncleft individuals. As the maxillary skeletal and dental widths presented a positive correlation with the nasal width, a decrease in nasal width must be considered when maxillary constriction is noted.Concordance in caregivers' and children's reports of children's trauma-related symptoms is often low, and symptom discrepancies are associated with negative clinical implications. The aim of the current study was to examine the degree of concordance between children's and caregivers' reports of trauma-related difficulties and determine whether any child or family characteristics were associated with symptom agreement. Three hundred thirteen trauma-exposed children (M = 9.55, SD = 1.77; 65.2% girls, 51.3% Black) and their nonoffending caregivers seeking treatment were included in the study. Children's and caregivers' reports of trauma-related difficulties were related, but low intraclass correlation coefficients indicated poor concordance across symptoms. Child's gender was associated with levels of concordance for several trauma-related difficulties (e.g., anxiety, depression, anger, dissociation, and sexual concerns), with lower symptom agreement for girls. Child's age, minority status, and relationship to caregiver emerged as factors related to levels of concordance for certain trauma-related symptoms. Child's gender, age, minority status, and relationship to caregiver may predict symptom discordance for select trauma-related difficulties, whereas other family factors such as caregiver marital status and income may be unrelated. Given the importance of caregiver-child concordance in treatment success, additional research should investigate other factors that may influence trauma-related symptom agreement.Objective To evaluate characteristics of congenital heart disease (CHD) in patients with cleft lip and/or palate (CL/P) and assess potential associations with cleft outcomes. Design Retrospective review of all patients with CL/P who underwent primary cleft treatment from 2009 to 2015. Setting Children's Hospital Los Angeles, a tertiary hospital. Patients Exclusion criteria included microform cleft lip diagnosis, international patients, and patients presenting for secondary repair or revision after primary repair at another institution. Main outcomes measured Patient demographics, prenatal and birth characteristics, CL/P characteristics, syndromic status, postoperative complications, and other outcomes were analyzed relative to CHD diagnoses and management. Patients with CL/P with (+CHD) were compared to those without (-CHD) CHD using χ2 tests and analysis of variance. Results Among 575 patients with CL/P, 83 (14.4%) had CHD. Congenital heart disease rates were significantly higher in patients with cleft palate (CP) compared to other cleft types (χ2, P = .009). Eighty-one (97.6%) out of 83 +CHD patients were diagnosed prior to initial CL/P surgical assessment. Twenty-three (27.7%) +CHD patients required surgical repair of 10 cardiac anomalies prior to cleft care. Congenital heart disease was associated with delayed CP repair and increased rates of fistula in isolated patients with CP. Conclusions Congenital heart disease is known to be more prevalent in patients with CL/P. These data suggest the condition is particularly increased in patients with CP. Severe forms of CHD are diagnosed and treated prior to cleft care however postoperative fistula may be more common in patients with CHD. Multilevel modeling was used to assess the relationship between independent variables and the decision to provide ongoing services; analyses included 2,296 children and 555 workers. Case and worker characteristics, including worker training and worker position, predicted ongoing child welfare services suggesting that further research examining the role of what worker characteristics impact child welfare decisions is warranted and essential.

Our findings revealed a high occurrence of complete CRISPR-Cas systems (62%, 41/66) in the B. pseudocatenulatum genomes. Subtypes I-C, I-U and II-A, were found to be widespread in this species. No significant association was found between the number of bacterial CRISPR spacers and its host's age. This study on prophages within B. pseudocatenulatum genomes revealed that prophage genes related to distinct functional modules became degraded at different levels, indicating that these prophages were not likely to enter lytic cycle spontaneously. Further, the evolutionary analysis of prophages in this study revealed that they might be derived from different phage ancestors. Notably, self-targeting phenomenon within B. pseudocatenulatum and Anti-CRISPR (Acr) coding genes in prophages was observed. It had the maximum activity at 60°C and pH 3.0 using ABTS as substrate and at 50°C and pH 4.0 using o-tolidine as substrate. The LeLac exhibited preferential oxidation of ABTS and featured resistance to high temperature, but relatively poor thermal stability. The LeLac activity could be strengthened by Cu2+ in dose-dependent manners. The LeLac could tolerate 15% of ethanol and methanol. The optimal pH for the lignin degradation of rape straw acid detergent fiber (ADF) by LeLac was 4.0. The LeLac could improve the cellulose enzymolysis of rape straw ADF by degrading its lignin. Relatively fewer lignin but more soluble phenols from original rape straw were removed by LeLac. The bottom grid structure (BGS) is an innovative concept proposed in this study to enhance removal of stormwater sediments entering ponds and reduce sediment resuspension. This concept was studied in a hydraulic scale model with the objective of elucidating the effects of the BGS geometry on stormwater sediment trapping. Towards this end, the BGS cell size and depth, and the cell cross-wall angle were varied for a range of flow rates, and the sediment trapping efficiency was measured in the model. The main value of the observed sediment trapping efficiencies, in the range from 13 to 55%, was a comparative assessment of various BGS designs. In general, larger cells (footprint 10 × 10 cm) were more effective than the smaller cells (5 × 5 cm), the cell depth exerted small influence on sediment trapping, and the cells with inclined cross-walls proved more effective in sediment trapping than the vertical cross-walls. However, the BGS with inclined cross-walls would be harder to maintain. Future studies should address an optimal cell design and testing in an actual stormwater pond.Chemical products traditionally used in the disinfection of water bodies often pose human health risks. For this reason, studies on natural coagulants such as Moringa oleifera Lam. represent an alternative for the inactivation of pathogenic microorganisms, among which is Escherichia coli. This study evaluated the effect of different concentrations of coagulants obtained from Moringa seed extracts and their protein fractions in the inactivation of E. coli during the coagulation/flocculation process. The coagulants studied were the aqueous extract, saline extract and protein fractions albumin and globulin, highlighting that the protein fractions were more effective on inactivating E. coli. The protein fraction globulin at a concentration of 10.0 mg L-1 showed bactericidal effects against E. coli within 18 min, whereas the albumin showed a bacteriostatic effect within 48 min because it isolated colonies in the sediment sample.In this study, a positively charged nanofiltration (NF) membrane was prepared by interfacial polymerization for separation of divalent cations, whereby a nanomaterial (modified graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) with poly(dopamine), PDA-C3N4) was incorporated into the active layer of the NF membrane. PDA-C3N4 sheets were synthesized from g-C3N4 sheets prepared by thermal oxidation of melamine, and the preparation conditions of NF membrane were also optimized. The results show that the roughness of PDA-C3N4 embedded NF membrane decreases, and the hydrophilicity and the permeation increase. The membrane also shows high rejection for divalent cations (Mg2+, Ca2+, Ba2+, Cu2+ and Zn2+) but low rejection (36.8%) for monovalent cation (Li+), as well as good fouling resistance performance. The influent flow to the plant was increased from 21,000 m3 d-1 to 30,000 m3 d-1, 40% of the existing CAS reactor volume was used for the MBBR zone with a carrier fill fraction of 47.62% and with Headworks Bio ActiveCell™ 515 used as media; no modifications were made for the primary and secondary tanks. The hybrid reactor showed high removal efficiencies for biochemical oxygen demand (BOD5), chemical oxygen demand (COD) and total suspended solids (TSS), with average effluent values recording 33.00 ± 8.87 mg L-1, 52.90 ± 9.65 mg L-1 and 29.50 ± 6.64 mg L-1 respectively. The influent flow to the plant was increased from 21,000 m3 d-1 to 30,000 m3 d-1, 40% of the existing CAS reactor volume was used for the MBBR zone with a carrier fill fraction of 47.62% and with Headworks Bio ActiveCell™ 515 used as media; no modifications were made for the primary and secondary tanks. The hybrid reactor showed high removal efficiencies for biochemical oxygen demand (BOD5), chemical oxygen demand (COD) and total suspended solids (TSS), with average effluent values recording 33.00 ± 8.87 mg L-1, 52.90 ± 9.65 mg L-1 and 29.50 ± 6.64 mg L-1 respectively.   • Background The role of Ser49Gly beta1-adrenergic receptor genetic polymorphism (ADBR1-GP-Ser49Gly) as a predictor of death in heart failure (HF) is not established for the Brazilian population. Objectives To evaluate the association between ADBR1-GP-Ser49Gly and clinical outcomes in individuals with HF with reduced ejection fraction. Methods Secondary analysis of medical records of 178 patients and genotypes of GPRβ1-Ser49Gly variants, classified as Ser-Ser, Ser-Gly and Gly-Gly. https://www.selleckchem.com/products/paeoniflorin.html To evaluate their association with clinical outcome. A significance level of 5% was adopted. Results Cohort means were clinical follow-up 6.7 years, age 63.5 years, 64.6% of men and 55.1% of whites. The genetic profile was distributed as follows 122 Ser-Ser (68.5%), 52 Ser-Gly (28.7%) and 5 Gly-Gly (2.8%). There was a significant association between these genotypes and mean NYHA functional class at the end of follow-up (p = 0.014) with Gly-Gly being associated with less advanced NYHA. In relation to the clinical outcomes, there was a significant association (p = 0.026) between mortality and GPRβ1-Ser49Gly the number of deaths in patients with Ser-Gly (12) or Gly-Gly (1) was lower than in those with Ser-Ser (54). The Gly allele had an independent protective effect maintained after multivariate analysis and was associated with a reduction of 63% in the risk of death (p = 0.03; Odds Ratio 0.37 - CI 0.15-0.91). Conclusion The presence of β1-AR-GP Gly-Gly was associated with better clinical outcome evaluated by NYHA functional class and was a predictor of lower risk of mortality, regardless of other factors, in a 6.7-year of follow-up. Results the analysis resulted in three thematic categories Social contribution of recyclable materials collectors; From the assistentialist perception to entrepreneurial Nursing care; Emancipatory strategies of recycling work. Final Considerations the emancipatory strategies to strengthen the social protagonism of recyclable materials collectors in the light of entrepreneurial Nursing care are related to the appreciation, recognition and enhancement of social work that has been already performed by these professionals, and to the creation of spaces for the socialization of experiences, expectations and perspectives.Objectives to analyze structural and process conditions in National Immunization Program Information System establishment. Low enrollment of population, failures in the active search for absentees, vaccine scheduling and absence of reports to monitor vaccination coverage were identified. Training was considered insufficient and ineffective. Conclusions Immunization Information System is an essential technological innovation for the management of immunization actions. However, the production of timely records and the use of information are still challenges. Investments in training are required to ensure System's management and operationalization activities.Objectives to describe the process of construction and validation of an educational booklet to promote bonding between mothers and newborns in a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. Methods methodological study developed through data collection in the literature and with the target audience; construction of the booklet; qualification of the material through validation by judges (health and communication experts/designer) and assessment by the target audience (mothers of at-risk newborns). Data were analyzed descriptively. Results booklet content was validated, obtaining an overall Content Validity Index of 0.92. Appearance was rated "Superior" with 80% percentage. Mothers performed an assessment with 100% agreement between the items. Conclusions the booklet was validated in all domains assessed and can be used by mothers with children hospitalized in the Neonatal Unit.Objectives to understand high school students' perception about the nurse's image and role in society, from nursing knowledge patterns. Results the performance of nurses was described in three analysis matrices, represented by the categories acquisition, implementation and maintenance of nursing resources; transformation of nursing resources into nursing service and results of the work of the nurse in Bed Management. Final Considerations understanding the performance of nurses in bed management contributes to the scenario of new practices and different roles that favor visibility and strengthening of the nurse's identity.

We present a case of a 68-year-old-patient, with a history of angioosteohypertrophy syndrome, who presented at our emergency department (ED) with symptoms of transient ischemic attacks. A thorough investigation, including echocardiography, revealed a neoplasm on the left coronary cusp (LCC) of the aortic valve. The neoplasm was resected via a valve-sparing shave via the right anterior thoracotomy (RAT). The pathological assessment confirmed it to be CPFE. CPFE is a rare but treatable cause of thromboembolism. The removal of CPFEs has classically been performed through a full median sternotomy. We like to present the first case of a valve-sparing removal of a CPFE on the aortic valve through a RAT approach. Materials and Methods This study was conducted between June 2014 and December 2014 at the Emergency Department of Konya Training and Research Hospital. Demographic characteristics, background, vital findings, laboratory findings, blood BTP levels, coronary angiography results, and echocardiography findings of the patients diagnosed with ACS were recorded. Risk classification was performed for patients with ACS and their mortality rates were recorded. Relation of BTP level with risk classification and mortality was evaluated. Results A total of 174 individuals, 138 patients and 36 control subjects, were included in the study. No significant difference was detected between BTP levels at the time of admission and at 8th hour in the patient group (p=0.883). There was no difference between the patient and control groups in terms of the BTP level (p=0.335). Ten patients (7.2%) died in the patient group. BTP levels measured at the time of admission and at 8th hour were not different for dead and living patients (admission p=0.085, 8th hour p=0.141). Conclusion We determined that there was a lack of biochemical markers that could be used for the prognosis of serum BTP levels in patients admitting to the emergency unit with ACS. Metaphysis of long bones is the most common location of this tumor. However, there a few case reports of this tumor arising from epiphysis of short tubular bones of the hand and feet. X-ray examination revealed a well-defined, longitudinally oval lytic lesion in the right distal phalanx of great toe, involving the growth plate and, eroding the medial cortex. Computed tomography (CT) scan did not show any evidence of calcification, septations or involvement of soft tissue. Open biopsy and curettage was done and the specimen was sent for histopathological examination. Histopathological examination (HPE) showed a lobular pattern consisting of myxomatous stroma and imcific radiologic features, and histopathology provides a definitive diagnosis. It should be considered in differential diagnosis of lytic lesion, and differentiated from other tumors, especially from chondrosarcoma to treat the patient appropriately. The clinical presentation and patients’ characteristics are usually utilized to identify those patients who need more critical care. However, the clinical evidence shows an unmet need to determine more accurate and optimal clinical biomarkers to triage patients under a condition like the COVID-19 crisis. Here we have presented a machine learning approach to find a group of clinical indicators from the blood tests of a set of COVID-19 patients that are predictive of poor prognosis and morbidity. Our approach consists of two interconnected schemes Feature Selection and Prognosis Classification. The former is based on different Matrix Factorization (MF)-based methods, and the latter is performed using Random Forest algorithm. Our model reveals that Arterial Blood Gas (ABG) O 2 Saturation and C-Reactive Protein (CRP) are the most important clinical biomarkers determining the poor prognosis in these patients. Our approach paves the path of building quantitative and optimized clinical management systems for COVID-19 and similar diseases.
    We aimed to measure SARS-CoV-2 seroprevalence in a cohort of healthcare workers (HCWs) during the first UK wave of the COVID-19 pandemic, explore risk factors associated with infection, and investigate the impact of antibody titres on assay sensitivity.

    HCWs at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (STH) were prospectively enrolled and sampled at two time points. SARS-CoV-2 antibodies were tested using an in-house assay for IgG and IgA reactivity against Spike and Nucleoprotein (sensitivity 99·47%, specificity 99·56%). Data were analysed using three statistical models a seroprevalence model, an antibody kinetics model, and a heterogeneous sensitivity model.

    As of 12th June 2020, 24·4% (n=311/1275) HCWs were seropositive. Of these, 39·2% (n=122/311) were asymptomatic. The highest adjusted seroprevalence was measured in HCWs on the Acute Medical Unit (41·1%, 95% CrI 30·0-52·9) and in Physiotherapists and Occupational Therapists (39·2%, 95% CrI 24·4-56·5). Older age groups showed overall higherOVID-19 infection to healthcare workers is greatest, and this knowledge should be used to prioritise infection prevention control and other measures to protect healthcare workers. Serological assays may have different sensitivity profiles across different age groups, especially if assay validation was undertaken using samples from older and/or hospitalised patients, who tend to have higher antibody titres. Future seroprevalence studies should consider adjusting for age-specific assay sensitivities to estimate true seroprevalence rates.

    Ground-glass opacity (GGO) - a hazy, gray appearing density on computed tomography (CT) of lungs - is one of the hallmark features of SARS-CoV-2 in COVID-19 patients. This AI-driven study is focused on segmentation, morphology, and distribution patterns of GGOs.

    We use an AI-driven unsupervised machine learning approach called PointNet++ to detect and quantify GGOs in CT scans of COVID-19 patients and to assess the severity of the disease. We have conducted our study on the "MosMedData", which contains CT lung scans of 1110 patients with or without COVID-19 infections. We quantify the morphologies of GGOs using Minkowski tensors and compute the abnormality score of individual regions of segmented lung and GGOs.

    PointNet++ detects GGOs with the highest evaluation accuracy (98%), average class accuracy (95%), and intersection over union (92%) using only a fraction of 3D data.
