The clinical benefit of lipid-lowering therapies is to reduce circulating levels of atherogenic particles and to ameliorate the risk of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD). The completion of two major clinical trials on PCSK9 inhibitors (PCSK9i), the FOURIER and the ODYSSEY outcome trials, has marked the beginning of a new era of lipid-lowering drugs. PCSK9i, evolocumab and alirocumab, are monoclonal antibodies that inactivate the liver proprotein convertase subtilisin kexin 9 (PCSK9). Inhibition of PCSK9 increases the number of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) receptors available leading to a profound reduction in circulating LDL particles. By preventing LDL receptor destruction, PCSK9i as adjunct to statin therapy can reduce LDL-C by 50-60% above that achieved by statin therapy alone. In addition, PCSK9i in combination with high-dose statins may reduce cardiovascular events and all-cause mortality in patients with clinical ASCVD. Based on evidence from clinical trials, the 2019 European Society of Cardiology (ESC)/European Atherosclerosis Society (EAS) guidelines for the management of dyslipidemias now include the use of PCSK9i to very high-risk ASCVD patients who are not achieving treatment goals on a maximum tolerated dose of a statin and ezetimibe. However, the cost-effectiveness of PCSK9i therapy is limited to secondary prevention in high-risk patients. This review outlines the main clinical trials leading to a change in the guidelines, clinical practice as well as the future challenges of PCSK9i therapy. The involvement of specific phosphodiesterases (PDEs) in the modulation of cAMP and thereby spontaneous meiotic resumption remains poorly understood. This work aims to evaluate the effects of cilostamide and rolipram (PDE 3A and PDE 4D inhibitors) on spontaneous meiotic resumption from diplotene arrest in rat oocytes cultured in vitro. For this purpose, diplotene-arrested cumulus oocyte complexes (COCs) were collected from rat ovary. The COCs and denuded oocytes were exposed to various concentrations of cilostamide (0.0, 2.5, 5.0 and 10 μM) and rolipram (0, 10, 50 and 100 μM) for various times (0, 3, 5, 7, 14, 16, 18, 20, 22 and 24 h). Cilostamide inhibited spontaneous meiotic resumption in a concentration- and time-dependent manner in COCs and denuded oocytes. Although rolipram showed inhibition of spontaneous meiotic resumption up to some extent, cilostamide was more potent to prevent spontaneous meiotic resumption in both COCs and denuded oocytes. Cilostamide significantly reduced PDE 3A expression, increased cAMP level and prevented spontaneous meiotic resumption in COCs and denuded oocytes. Although rolipram inhibited PDE 4D expression in cumulus cells, increased cAMP level but was not sufficient to prevent spontaneous meiotic resumption. Manganese was co-infused with virus to allow rapid post-surgical confirmation of targeting accuracy using MRI. A needle guide was designed to increase the accuracy of sub-cortical targeting using stereotaxic co-ordinates. RESULTS The multi-channel injection devices produced dense, uniform coverage of dorsal surface cortex, ventral surface cortex, and intra-sulcal cortex, respectively. Co-infusion of manganese with the viral vector allowed for immediate verification of injection accuracy. The needle guide improved accuracy of targeting sub-cortical structures by preventing needle deflection. COMPARISON WITH EXISTING METHOD(S) The current methods, hand-held injections or single slow mechanical injection, for surface cortex transduction do not, in our hands, produce the density and uniformity of coverage provided by the injector arrays and associated infusion protocol. CONCLUSIONS The efficiency and reliability of vector delivery has been considerably improved by the development of new methods and instruments. This development should facilitate the translation of chemo- and optogenetic studies performed in smaller animals to larger animals such as rhesus monkeys. The aim of the present study was to investigate the potential role of OXT receptors and their downstream calcineurin (CN)/inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) pathways in proconvulsant effects of sildenafil. The pentylenetetrazole (PTZ)-induced seizure was used as a standard convulsion model in this study. Cortical CN activity, hippocampal nitrite levels, and proinflammatory cytokine content were measured. Untargeted metabolomics aims to quantify the complete set of metabolites within a biological system, most commonly by liquid chromatography/mass spectrometry (LC/MS). Since nearly the inception of the field, compound identification has been widely recognized as the rate-limiting step of the experimental workflow. In spite of exponential increases in the size of metabolomic databases, which now contain experimental MS/MS spectra for over a half million reference compounds, chemical structures still cannot be confidently assigned to many signals in a typical LC/MS dataset. The purpose of this Perspective is to consider why identification rates continue to be low in untargeted metabolomics. One rationalization is that many naturally occurring metabolites detected by LC/MS are true "novel" compounds that have yet to be incorporated into metabolomic databases. An alternative possibility, however, is that research data do not provide database matches because of informatic artifacts, chemical contaminants, and signal redundancies. Increasing evidence suggests that, for at least some sample types, many unidentifiable signals in untargeted metabolomics result from the latter rather than new compounds originating from the specimen being measured. The implications of these observations on chemical discovery in untargeted metabolomics is discussed.The pseudosymmetric relationship of the bacterial sialic acid, pseudaminic acid, and 3-deoxy-d-manno-oct-2-ulosonic acid (KDO) affords the hypothesis that suitably protected KDO donors will adopt the trans, gauche conformation of their side chain and consequently be highly equatorially selective in their coupling reactions conducted at low temperature. This hypothesis is borne out by the synthesis, conformational analysis, and excellent equatorial selectivity seen on coupling of per-O-acetyl or benzyl-protected KDO donors in dichloromethane at -78 °C. Mechanistic understanding of glycosylation reactions is advancing to a stage at which predictions of selectivity can be made. In this instance, predictions of selectivity provide the first highly selective entry into KDO equatorial glycosides such as are found in the capsular polysaccharides of numerous pathogenic bacteria.We present a well-parallelized local implementation of high-spin open-shell coupled cluster methods with single and double excitations (CCSD) using pair natural orbitals (PNOs). The methods are based on the spin-orbital coupled cluster theory using restricted open-shell Hartree-Fock (ROHF) reference functions. Two variants, namely PNO-UCCSD and PNO-RCCSD are implemented and compared. In PNO-UCCSD the coupled cluster amplitudes are spin-unrestricted, while in PNO-RCCSD the linear terms are spin-adapted by a spin-projection approach as described in J. Chem. Phys. 99, 5219 (1993). Near linear scaling of the computational cost with the number of correlated electrons is achieved by applying domain and pair approximations. The PNOs are spin-independent and obtained using a semicanonical spin-restricted MP2 approximation with large domains of projected atomic orbitals (PAOs). The pair approximations of our previously described closed-shell PNO-LCCSD method are carefully revised so that they are compatible to the UCCSD theory, and PNO-UCCSD or PNO-RCCSD calculations for closed-shell molecules yield exactly the same results as corresponding spin-free closed-shell PNO-LCCSD calculations. The convergence of the results with respect to the thresholds and options that control the domain and pair approximations is demonstrated. It is found that large domains are required for the single excitations in open-shell calculations in order to obtain converged results. In general, the errors of relative energies caused by the local approximations can be reduced to below 1 kcal mol-1, even for difficult cases. This work is a follow up of two papers devoted to the computation of anharmonic vibrational states of solids from DFT calculations, part I description of the potential energy surface (J. Chem. Theory Comput. 15 (2019) 3755-3765) and part II implementation of the VSCF and VCI methods (J. Chem. Theory Comput. 15 (2019) 3766-3777). The approach presented here relies on the evaluation of integrals of the dipole moment and polarizability operators over anharmonic wavefunctions obtained from either VSCF or VCI calculations. With this extension, the program now allows for a more complete characterization of the vibrational spectroscopic features of solids within the density functional theory. In particular, it is able (i) to provide reliable positions and inten-sities for most intense spectral features, and (ii) to check whether a first overtone or a combi-nati (DFT exchange-correlation functional/basis set) for the electronic structure calculations on the computed spectra is discussed and found to be significant, which suggests some special care is needed for the analysis of subtle spectral features.Ultraviolet photodissociation (UVPD) has emerged as a promising tool to characterize proteins with regard to not only their primary sequences and post-translational modifications, but also their tertiary structures. In this study, three metal-binding proteins, Staphylococcal nuclease, azurin, and calmodulin, are used to demonstrate the use of UVPD to elucidate metal-binding regions via comparisons between the fragmentation patterns of apo (metal-free) and holo (metal-bound) proteins. The binding of staphylococcal nuclease to calcium was evaluated, in addition to a series of lanthanide(III) ions which are expected to bind in a similar manner as calcium. On the basis of comparative analysis of the UVPD spectra, the binding region for calcium and the lanthanide ions was determined to extend from residues 40-50, aligning with the known crystal structure. Similar analysis was performed for both azurin (interrogating copper and silver binding) and calmodulin (four calcium binding sites). This work demonstrates the utility of UVPD methods for determining and analyzing the metal binding sites of a variety of classes of proteins.

Splenic abscess is a very rare complication of laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy (LSG). Clinical presentation includes fever, leucocystosis, and abdominal pain. CT SCAN is a must for diagnosis. The preferred treatment is either conservative, with intravenous antibiotics and percutaneous drainage, or splenectomy. We report the thirteen case of a splenic abscess after LSG. In our patient, the abscess occurred three weeks after LSG in a 21-year-old man, and it was successfully treated conservatively. Copyright © 2020 Rany Aoun et al.We report a case of myopathy in a chronic alcoholic patient with scurvy who presented with generalized weakness, myalgias, and arthralgia. Our case raises awareness regarding rare interaction between vitamin C deficiency and myopathy which is seen more commonly in patients with history of chronic alcoholism and low socioeconomic status. Early treatment with vitamin C replacement is helpful in treatment of the disease and its complications. Recurrence rates of POP after tension-free vaginal mesh (TVM) surgery (n = 243), native tissue repair (NTR) (vaginal hysterectomy with colpopexy, anterior and posterior colpoplasty, or circumferential suturing of the levator ani muscles and apical repair by transvaginal sacrospinous ligament fixation (SSLF)) (NTR; n = 31), and laparoscopic sacrocolpopexy after subtotal hysterectomy (LSC; n = 34) were compared. Presence of mesh erosion was also recorded. Results Patients who underwent LSC were significantly younger (65.32 ± 3.23 years) than those who underwent TVM surgery (69.61 ± 8.31 years). After TVM surgery, the rate of recurrence (over POP-Q stage II) was 6.17% (15/243) and was highest in patients with advanced POP. The recurrence rate in patients who underwent NTR procedure was 3.23% (1/34) and that in patients who underwent LSC was 11.76% (4/11). All maternal deaths and maternal near-misses based on WHO criteria were included in this study. Three outcome variables have been identified maternal mortality, perinatal mortality, and neonatal complications. To examine the predictors for the three predetermined outcome variables, the three logit models each containing unadjusted and adjusted findings were fitted. A P-value less th be substantially reduced. Furthermore, the study recommends regular provision of in-service refresher training to emphasize the practice and compliance of per-protocol case management through a team approach in order to reduce the burden of maternal and perinatal mortality in Tanzania. Splenic abscess is a very rare complication of laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy (LSG). Clinical presentation includes fever, leucocystosis, and abdominal pain. CT SCAN is a must for diagnosis. The preferred treatment is either conservative, with intravenous antibiotics and percutaneous drainage, or splenectomy. We report the thirteen case of a splenic abscess after LSG. In our patient, the abscess occurred three weeks after LSG in a 21-year-old man, and it was successfully treated conservatively. CONCLUSIONS It is important that the limitations of attenuation correction in PET-MR are considered when designing research and clinical PET-MR protocols in order to enable accurate quantification of brain PET scans. Whilst the effect of pads is not significant, dense hair, the use of headphones and the use of an independently acquired CT-scan can all lead to non-negligible effects on PET quantification. Although seemingly trivial, these effects add complications to setting up protocols for clinical and research PET-MR studies that do not occur with PET-CT. In the absence of more sophisticated PET-MR brain attenuation correction, the effect of all of the issues above can be minimised if the pragmatic approaches presented in this work are followed.PURPOSE Several studies have shown that orthodontic anomalies may affect young people's Oral Health-Related Quality of Life (OHRQoL). The purpose the present study was to translate in the Greek language, culturally adapt and initially validate the CPQ11-14 ISF-16 for a Greek adolescent population with malocclusion. METHODS Following relevant methodological recommendations, after translation, the comprehensiveness of the Greek version of CPQ11-14 ISF-16 (CPQ11-14 ISF-16-GR) was verified in a pilot study of 20 Greek adolescents. The main study was undertaken in a sample of 200 adolescents that presented for an initial consultation at the Postgraduate Orthodontic Clinic. Cronbach's alpha was used to test internal consistency/reliability and Spearman's rho for criterion validity with the Oral Health Impact Profile (OHIP-14). Forty individuals completed the same questionnaires again after 3 weeks. Test-retest reliability was assessed using Intraclass Correlation Coefficient. Statistical tests were undertaken using SPSS (v. 24, IBM Corp., NY, USA). RESULTS The CPQ11-14 ISF-16-GR presented high internal consistency (Cronbach's alpha = 0.848 > 0.70) and very satisfactory Discrimination Index (DI = 0.47 > 0.30). Moreover, the CPQ11-14ISF-16 showed excellent criterion validity with OHIP-14 (rho = 0.719, p less then 0.001). Test-retest reliability was at high levels as well (ICC = 0.719, p less then 0.001). CONCLUSION The CPQ11-14 ISF-16-GR exhibits satisfactory psychometric properties to continue the investigation of OHRQoL in Greek adolescents with malocclusion. The initial aim of this study was to confirm the identity of the Parafilaroides species infecting this population. Parafilaroides are usually small and delicate, making them difficult to extract from host tissue, and there is often difficulty accessing fresh specimens for morphological study. The large size of the Dutch worms and the accessibility of specimens from numerous animals enabled the description and measurement of many intact specimens (N = 64) from multiple host animals (N = 20). Species identity was confirmed by targeted sequencing of ribosomal and mitochondrial DNA amplicons from a subset of worms. Worm morphology was consistent with descriptions for P. gymnurus, but the mature females were 1.9-fold and 3.4-fold longer than those recovered from French EACS (P ≤ 0.001) and Canadian western Atlantic common seals (Phoca vitulina concolor; P ≤ 0.0001). They were also significantly longer than mature female P. gymnurus described from other seal species, with the exception of those from harp seals of Les Escoumins, Quebec. We suggest that intraspecific genetic differences in P. gymnurus and the environment within the host could contribute to the variation reported here. This study is the first to describe P. gymnurus using morphological and molecular methods and should serve as a reference for identification of the species.

For optimal performance, machine learning methods for protein sequence/structural analysis typically require as input a large multiple sequence alignment (MSA), which is often created using query-based iterative programs, such as PSI-BLAST or JackHMMER. However, because these programs align database sequences using a query sequence as a template, they may fail to detect or may tend to misalign sequences distantly related to the query. More generally, automated MSA programs often fail to align sequences correctly due to the unpredictable nature of protein evolution. Addressing this problem typically requires manual curation in the light of structural data. However, curated MSAs tend to contain too few sequences to serve as input for statistically based methods. We address these shortcomings by making publicly available a set of 252 curated hierarchical MSAs (hiMSAs), containing a total of 26 212 066 sequences, along with programs for generating from these extremely large MSAs. Each hiMSA consists of a set of hierarchically arranged MSAs representing individual subgroups within a superfamily along with template MSAs specifying how to align each subgroup MSA against MSAs higher up the hierarchy. Central to this approach is the MAPGAPS search program, which uses a hiMSA as a query to align (potentially vast numbers of) matching database sequences with accuracy comparable to that of the curated hiMSA. We illustrate this process for the exonuclease-endonuclease-phosphatase superfamily and for pleckstrin homology domains. A set of extremely large MSAs generated from the hiMSAs in this way is available as input for deep learning, big data analyses. Methods Retrospective review of patients aged over 60 years who received CPR between May 2017 and December 2018, in a tertiary referral hospital, which does not provide primary coronary revascularisation. Clinical Frailty Scale (CFS) and Charlson Comorbidity Index were retrospectively assigned. Results Data for 90 patients were analysed, the median age was 77 (IQR 70-83); 71% were male; 44% were frail (CFS > 4). Frailty was predictive of in-hospital mortality independent of age, comorbidity and cardiac arrest rhythm (OR 2.789 95% CI 1.145-6.795). No frail patients (CFS > 4) survived to hospital discharge, regardless of cardiac arrest rhythm, whilst 13 (26%) of the non-frail (CFS ≤ 4) patients survived to hospital discharge. Of the 13 survivors (Age 72; range 61-86), 12 were alive at 1 year and had a good neurological outcome, the outcome for the remaining patient was unknown. Conclusion Frail patients are unlikely to survive to hospital discharge following in-hospital cardiac arrest, these results may facilitate clinical decision making regarding whether CPR may be considered futile. Further analysis revealed that the model performed better than the other clinical indicators and is independent of these indicators. For optimal performance, machine learning methods for protein sequence/structural analysis typically require as input a large multiple sequence alignment (MSA), which is often created using query-based iterative programs, such as PSI-BLAST or JackHMMER. However, because these programs align database sequences using a query sequence as a template, they may fail to detect or may tend to misalign sequences distantly related to the query. More generally, automated MSA programs often fail to align sequences correctly due to the unpredictable nature of protein evolution. Addressing this problem typically requires manual curation in the light of structural data. However, curated MSAs tend to contain too few sequences to serve as input for statistically based methods. We address these shortcomings by making publicly available a set of 252 curated hierarchical MSAs (hiMSAs), containing a total of 26 212 066 sequences, along with programs for generating from these extremely large MSAs. Each hiMSA consists of a set of hierarchically arranged MSAs representing individual subgroups within a superfamily along with template MSAs specifying how to align each subgroup MSA against MSAs higher up the hierarchy. Central to this approach is the MAPGAPS search program, which uses a hiMSA as a query to align (potentially vast numbers of) matching database sequences with accuracy comparable to that of the curated hiMSA. We illustrate this process for the exonuclease-endonuclease-phosphatase superfamily and for pleckstrin homology domains. A set of extremely large MSAs generated from the hiMSAs in this way is available as input for deep learning, big data analyses. Methods Retrospective review of patients aged over 60 years who received CPR between May 2017 and December 2018, in a tertiary referral hospital, which does not provide primary coronary revascularisation. Clinical Frailty Scale (CFS) and Charlson Comorbidity Index were retrospectively assigned. Results Data for 90 patients were analysed, the median age was 77 (IQR 70-83); 71% were male; 44% were frail (CFS > 4). Frailty was predictive of in-hospital mortality independent of age, comorbidity and cardiac arrest rhythm (OR 2.789 95% CI 1.145-6.795). No frail patients (CFS > 4) survived to hospital discharge, regardless of cardiac arrest rhythm, whilst 13 (26%) of the non-frail (CFS ≤ 4) patients survived to hospital discharge. Of the 13 survivors (Age 72; range 61-86), 12 were alive at 1 year and had a good neurological outcome, the outcome for the remaining patient was unknown. Conclusion Frail patients are unlikely to survive to hospital discharge following in-hospital cardiac arrest, these results may facilitate clinical decision making regarding whether CPR may be considered futile. In this paper, a triple-band Linear Polarization to Circular Polarization (LP-to-CP) converter is presented using a novel design procedure based on geometric parameters optimization of a metasheet. The proposed converter is ultrathin, wideband, stable over a wide range of incident angles, and polarization diverse. The conductor layer of metasheet is patterned with a square ring and five square-patches diagonally intersecting each other. To validate the proposed method, an LP-to-CP convertor in X-band (7.3~9.6 GHz) and dual Ka-bands (25.4~31.4 GHz, 35.4~42.2 GHz) is presented. The performance is quite stable in wide range of frequencies and against the variation of incident angles from -25° to 25°. After performing model-based theoretical paradigm analysis, and full-wave simulation and optimization, the converter is fabricated and the measurements are performed inside the anechoic chamber. As part of this ground-breaking research, a new image-guided MRT technique was implemented for accurate tumor targeting combined with a pioneering assessment of tumor dose-coverage; an essential parameter for clinical radiotherapy. Based on the results of our study, we can now (for the first time) present clear and reproducible relationships between the in vitro cell response, tumor dose-volume coverage and survival post MRT irradiation of an aggressive and radioresistant brain cancer in a rodent model. In this study, celastrol nanosuspensions (CSL-NSps) were prepared using an antisolvent precipitation method with poloxamer 188 (P-188) as a stabilizer at a high CSL/P-188 feeding ratio of 81. The resultant CSL was spherical in shape with an average particle size of 147.9 nm, a polydispersity index (PDI) of 0.12 and zeta potential of -19.2 mV. The encapsulation efficiency and drug loading content were 98.18% and 86.83%, respectively, and the X-ray diffraction (XRD) pattern showed that CSL existed in an amorphous state in the nanosuspensions. CSL-NSps were quite stable in various physiological media and plasma and were both suitable for oral and intravenous administration. Nanosuspensions greatly enhanced the in vitro dissolution, and the cumulative drug release reached approximately 69.20% within 48 h. The proposed converter is ultrathin, wideband, stable over a wide range of incident angles, and polarization diverse. The conductor layer of metasheet is patterned with a square ring and five square-patches diagonally intersecting each other. To validate the proposed method, an LP-to-CP convertor in X-band (7.3~9.6 GHz) and dual Ka-bands (25.4~31.4 GHz, 35.4~42.2 GHz) is presented. The performance is quite stable in wide range of frequencies and against the variation of incident angles from -25° to 25°. After performing model-based theoretical paradigm analysis, and full-wave simulation and optimization, the converter is fabricated and the measurements are performed inside the anechoic chamber. As part of this ground-breaking research, a new image-guided MRT technique was implemented for accurate tumor targeting combined with a pioneering assessment of tumor dose-coverage; an essential parameter for clinical radiotherapy. In this study, celastrol nanosuspensions (CSL-NSps) were prepared using an antisolvent precipitation method with poloxamer 188 (P-188) as a stabilizer at a high CSL/P-188 feeding ratio of 81. The resultant CSL was spherical in shape with an average particle size of 147.9 nm, a polydispersity index (PDI) of 0.12 and zeta potential of -19.2 mV. The encapsulation efficiency and drug loading content were 98.18% and 86.83%, respectively, and the X-ray diffraction (XRD) pattern showed that CSL existed in an amorphous state in the nanosuspensions. CSL-NSps were quite stable in various physiological media and plasma and were both suitable for oral and intravenous administration. Nanosuspensions greatly enhanced the in vitro dissolution, and the cumulative drug release reached approximately 69.20% within 48 h. The mean age at the time of revision THA was 69 years, and 68% of the patients were female. The most common indications for revision were 2-stage reimplantation (33%), recurrent dislocation (30%), and aseptic loosening of the acetabular component (22%) or both the acetlted in no cases of aseptic metal acetabular component loosening in this large series. Methods A systematic literature review was performed using MEDLINE, PubMed, and Google Scholar from January 1, 1900, to December 31, 2019, with the following keywords New Zealand, SCFE, slipped capital femoral epiphysis, SUFE, and slipped upper femoral epiphysis. The references were also screened. Results Eight original scientific research articles that had been published in peer-reviewed journals were identified, as well as 4 published abstracts from conference proceedings; we summarized the key findings. The New Zealand Māori and Pacific ethnicities have the highest reported burden of SCFE, with 4.2 and 5.6 times the prevalence, respectively, when compared with New Zealand European (Caucasian). Māori children are younger at presentation (p = 0.002) and more frequently present with bilateral SCFE (p = 0.05), and there is a strong link with childhood obesity. A contralateral posterior sloping angle (PSA) of ≥14° may be used as an adjunct threshold for decision-making regarding prophylactic pinning. A PSA of ≥40° was found to correlate with a higher likelihood of unsatisfactory functional outcome following SCFE pinning in situ. When conversion to total hip arthroplasty is eventually required due to SCFE, early functional outcomes are similar to those of patients with primary osteoarthritis, and revision rates and mortality rates are not significantly different. Background/aims Ulcerative colitis (UC) is a chronic, relapsing and remitting inflammation of the gastrointestinal tract. Little is known about the link between dietary intake, food avoidance, and beliefs among UC patients of different disease severity. Therefore, this study aimed to assess the dietary intake, food avoidance, and beliefs among active and inactive UC patients. Methods A cross-sectional study was conducted among UC patients from a tertiary medical center in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Demographic, anthropometric, dietary intake, food avoidance and beliefs were assessed. Disease activity of UC patients was evaluated using the Powell Tuck Index. Results UC patients were recruited (64.1% inactive UC and 35.9% active UC). As compared to inactive UC patients, active UC patients were likely to lose weight (75.0% vs. 0%), possess certain food beliefs (95.7% vs. 39.0%), and frequently practiced dietary avoidance (95.7% vs. 43.9%). The dietary intake among inactive UC patients was higher than active UC patients. However, neither of them met the standard nutrients recommendation for protein, calcium, iron, folate, zinc, vitamin D, vitamin B12, and vitamin E. Conclusions Active UC patients had poorer dietary intake, were more prone to practicing food avoidance and exhibited certain food beliefs as compared to inactive UC patients. Both macro- and micronutrients intakes were inadequate regardless of patient's disease status. These findings emphasized the importance for patients to be provided with the nutrition-related knowledge as part of strategies to avoid nutritional inadequacies.Parkinson's disease (PD), which is not only a motor disease, is one of the most frequent neurodegenerative diseases and affects 1.5-2% of people worldwide. Many PD patients show difficulty in accessing the lexicon related to cognitive impairment. Clinical evaluation of speech disorders in PD includes the clinical history, verbal and non-verbal assessment of the voice, evaluation of the calibre of the language. It is also important to self-assess speech disturbances because PD patients often do not realize their own deficits. Self-assessment tests comprise subjective assessment of communicative disorder in different social situations, description of adopted strategies, perception of the reactions of interlocutors. The comparison between perceptive and subjective examination of speech disorders in PD patients are described in order to evaluate the presence of these deficits and their impact on quality of life in order to initiate early treatment with specific speech therapy.Objective To quantify aerosol generation from respiratory interventions and the effectiveness of their removal by a personal ventilation hood. Design and setting Determination of the aerosol particle generation (in a single, healthy volunteer in a clean room) associated with breathing, speaking, wet coughing, oxygen (O2) 15 L/min via face mask, O2 60 L/min via nasal prongs, bilevel non-invasive positive-pressure ventilation (BiPAP) and nebulisation with O2 10 L/min. Interventions Aerosol generation was measured with two particle sizer and counter devices, focusing on aerosols 0.5-5 μm (human-generated aerosols), with and without the hood. An increase from baseline of less than 0.3 particles per mL was considered a low level of generation. Main outcome measures Comparisons of aerosol generation between different respiratory interventions. Effectiveness of aerosol reduction by a personal ventilation hood. Results Results for the 0.5-5 μm aerosol range. Quiet breathing and talking demonstrated very low increase in aerosols ( less then 0.1 particles/mL). Aerosol generation was low for wet coughing (0.1 particles/mL), O2 15 L/min via face mask (0.18 particles/mL), and high flow nasal O2 60 L/min (0.24 particles/mL). Non-invasive ventilation generated moderate aerosols (29.7 particles/mL) and nebulisation very high aerosols (1086 particles/mL); the personal ventilation hood reduced the aerosol counts by 98% to 0.5 particles/mL and 8.9 particles/mL respectively. Conclusions In this human volunteer study, the administration of O2 15 L/min by face mask and 60 L/min nasal therapy did not increase aerosol generation beyond low levels. Non-invasive ventilation caused moderate aerosol generation and nebulisation therapy very high aerosol generation. The personal ventilation hood reduced the aerosol counts by at least 98%.The aim of this study was to explore the effects of Caveolin-1 on lung injury in rats with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). The forced expiratory volume in 0.3 s/forced vital capacity (FEV0.3/ FVC) and peak expiratory flow (PEF) were determined. The total white blood cells (WBC), neutrophil ratio (NEUT%), mononuclear macrophage ratio (MNM%), lymphocyte ratio (LY%) and protein concentration in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) were measured. Both FEV0.3/FVC and PEF significantly declined in the COPD group compared with those in the Control group, while they significantly rose in the IWR-1 group and Daidzin group compared with those in the COPD group. HE staining showed that there were alveolar dilatation and enlargement with obviously increased intercept in the COPD group, while there were basically no changes in the alveoli in the IWR-1 group and Daidzin group. Massive apoptosis of alveolar tissues was observed in COPD group, and there was only a little apoptosis in IWR-1 group and Daidzin grou lung tissues also markedly declined in the Daidzin group compared with those in the COPD group. Interventions Aerosol generation was measured with two particle sizer and counter devices, focusing on aerosols 0.5-5 μm (human-generated aerosols), with and without the hood. An increase from baseline of less than 0.3 particles per mL was considered a low level of generation. Non-invasive ventilation generated moderate aerosols (29.7 particles/mL) and nebulisation very high aerosols (1086 particles/mL); the personal ventilation hood reduced the aerosol counts by 98% to 0.5 particles/mL and 8.9 particles/mL respectively. Conclusions In this human volunteer study, the administration of O2 15 L/min by face mask and 60 L/min nasal therapy did not increase aerosol generation beyond low levels. Non-invasive ventilation caused moderate aerosol generation and nebulisation therapy very high aerosol generation. The personal ventilation hood reduced the aerosol counts by at least 98%.The aim of this study was to explore the effects of Caveolin-1 on lung injury in rats with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). The forced expiratory volume in 0.3 s/forced vital capacity (FEV0.3/ FVC) and peak expiratory flow (PEF) were determined. The total white blood cells (WBC), neutrophil ratio (NEUT%), mononuclear macrophage ratio (MNM%), lymphocyte ratio (LY%) and protein concentration in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) were measured. Both FEV0.3/FVC and PEF significantly declined in the COPD group compared with those in the Control group, while they significantly rose in the IWR-1 group and Daidzin group compared with those in the COPD group. HE staining showed that there were alveolar dilatation and enlargement with obviously increased intercept in the COPD group, while there were basically no changes in the alveoli in the IWR-1 group and Daidzin group. Massive apoptosis of alveolar tissues was observed in COPD group, and there was only a little apoptosis in IWR-1 group and Daidzin grou lung tissues also markedly declined in the Daidzin group compared with those in the COPD group. Methods Medical records of subacute post-stroke patients who had undergone intensive rehabilitation under hospitalization, before and after the application of GAS, were collected.
