  • A tight collaboration between diabetologists, nephrologists and cardiologists should be encouraged for a holistic and effective strategy to reduce the burden of cardio-renal-metabolic interaction.Farnesoid X receptor (FXR) influences bile acid homeostasis and the progression of various diseases. While the roles of hepatic and intestinal FXR in enterohepatic transport of bile acids and metabolic diseases were reviewed previously, the pathophysiological functions of FXR in non-gastrointestinal cells and tissues have received little attention. Thus, the roles of FXR in the liver, immune system, nervous system, cardiovascular system, kidney, and pancreas beyond the gastrointestinal system are reviewed herein. Gain of FXR function studies in non-gastrointestinal tissues reveal that FXR signaling improves various experimentally-induced metabolic and immune diseases, including non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, type 2 diabetes, primary biliary cholangitis, sepsis, autoimmune diseases, multiple sclerosis, and diabetic nephropathy, while loss of FXR promotes regulatory T cells production, protects the brain against ischemic injury, atherosclerosis, and inhibits pancreatic tumor progression. These isoforms are differentially expressed throughout the body, including the cardiovascular, central nervous system and other organs. Thus, PDE1 enzymes play a critical role in the pathophysiology of diseases through the fundamental regulation of cAMP and cGMP signaling. This comprehensive review provides the current research on PDE1 and its potential utility as a therapeutic target in diseases including the cardiovascular, pulmonary, metabolic, neurocognitive, renal, cancers and possibly others.Recent years have seen a renewed interest on the possible therapeutic exploitations of specific cannabinoids derived from the Cannabis sativa plant. There is a substantial number of heterocyclic compounds approved for cancer treatment, and these compounds function by interacting with different therapeutic targets involved in tumorogenesis. In this review, we trace and emphasize the privileged heterocyclic pharmacophores that have immense potency against several essential chemotherapeutic tumor targets microtubules, kinases and carbonic anhydrases. Potent compounds currently undergoing pre-clinical and clinical studies have also been assessed for ascertaining the effective class of chemical scaffolds that have significant therapeutic potential against multiple malignancies. In addition, we also describe briefly the role of heterocyclic compounds in various chemotherapy regimens. The optimized molecular hybridization of delineated motifs may result in the discovery of more active anticancer therapeutics and circumvent the development of resistance by specific targets in the future.Pancreatic cancer is one of the malignant tumors with poor prognosis. The molecular mechanisms of pancreatic oncogenesis and malignant progression are not fully elucidated. Several key signaling pathways, such as Notch, Wnt and hedgehog pathways, are important to drive pancreatic carcinogenesis. Recently, noncoding RNAs, especially circular RNAs (circRNAs), have been characterized to participate into pancreatic cancer development. Therefore, in this review article, we describe the association between circRNAs and pancreatic cancer prognosis. Moreover, we discuss how circRNAs are involved in regulation of cellular processes in pancreatic cancer, including proliferation, apoptosis, cell cycle, migration, invasion, EMT, metastasis, angiogenesis, drug resistance and immune escape. Furthermore, we mention that several compounds could regulate the expression of circRNAs, indicating that targeting circRNAs by compounds might be helpful for treating pancreatic cancer patients.

This manuscript reviews different aspects of bioactive peptides concerning their biological (antihypertensive, antioxidative, antiobesity, and hypocholesterolemic) and functional (water holding capacity, solubility, emulsifying, and foaming) properties. Moreover, the properties of several bioactive peptides extracted from different foods as potential ingredients to formulate health promoting foods are described. Thus, multifunctional properties of bioactive peptides provide the possibility to formulate or develop novel healthy food products.
    COVID-19 is an emerging infectious disease, that is heavily challenging health systems worldwide. Admission Arterial Blood Gas (ABG) and Lung Ultrasound (LUS) can be of great help in clinical decision making, especially during the current pandemic and the consequent overcrowding of the Emergency Department (ED). The aim of the study was to demonstrate the capability of alveolar-to-arterial oxygen difference (AaDO
    ) in predicting the need for subsequent oxygen support and survival in patients with COVID-19 infection, especially in the presence of baseline normal PaO
    /FiO
    ratio (P/F) values.

    A cohort of 223 swab-confirmed COVID-19 patients underwent clinical evaluation, blood tests, ABG and LUS in the ED. LUS score was derived from 12 ultrasound lung windows. AaDO

    Malaria and helminths diseases are co-endemic in most parts of sub-Saharan Africa. Immune responses from each of these pathogens interact, and these interactions may have implications on vaccines. The GMZ2 malaria vaccine candidate is a fusion protein of Plasmodium falciparum merozoite surface protein 3 (MSP3) and glutamate rich protein (GLURP R0). GMZ2 has recently showed modest efficacy in a phase IIb multicenter trial. Here, we assessed the effect of hookworm (Necator americanus) infection and anthelmintic treatment on naturally acquired antibody responses against GMZ2 and constituent antigens.

    This longitudinal cross-sectional study was conducted in the Kintampo North Municipality of Ghana. Blood and stool samples were taken from 158 individuals (4-88 years old) infected with either P. falciparum alone (n = 59) or both hookworm and P. falciparum (n = 63) and uninfected endemic controls (n = 36). Stool hookworm infection was detected by the Kato-Katz method and PCR. Malaria parasitaemia was detected byave a potential implication on malaria vaccine efficacy.
    Individuals with co-infection had higher antibody responses to GMZ2 antigen. Treatment of hookworm/malaria co-infection resulted in a reduction in antibody responses against GMZ2 and constituent antigens after albendazole treatment. Thus, hookworm infection and treatment could have a potential implication on malaria vaccine efficacy.
    Increased fibroblast growth factor 23 (FGF23) is a risk factor for mortality, cardiovascular disease, and progression of chronic kidney disease. Limited data exist comparing the association of either c-terminal FGF23 (cFGF23) or intact FGF23 (iFGF23) in kidney transplant recipients (KTRs) with overall (all-cause) graft loss.

    We conducted a prospective observational cohort study in 562 stable kidney transplant recipients. Patients were followed for graft loss and all-cause mortality for a median follow-up of 48 months.

    During a median follow-up of 48 months, 94 patients had overall graft loss (primary graft loss or death with functioning graft). Both cFGF23 and iFGF23 concentrations were significantly higher in patients with overall graft loss than those without (24.59 [11.43-87.82] versus 10.67 [5.99-22.73] pg/ml; p < 0.0001 and 45.24 [18.63-159.00] versus 29.04 [15.23-60.65] pg/ml; p = 0.002 for cFGF23 and iFGF23, respectively). Using both the general linear model and mixed linear model, we identified 14 high-confidence significant marker-trait associations (MTAs) that were associated with GFeC, GZnC, and GMnC of which nine MTAs were novel. Six MTAs distributed on chromosomes 3B, 4A, 4B, 5A, and 7B were significantly associated with GFeC. Three MTAs on 1A and 2A were significantly associated with GZnC and five MTAs on 1B were significantly associated with GMnC. These MTAs show no negative effects on thousand kernel weight (TKW), implying the potential value for simultaneous improvement of micronutrient concentrations and TKW in breeding.     Two consecutive birth cohorts at 134 centres were compared. At general health screening visits, children born July-December 2011 were vision screened four times between 6 and 24months with inspection, pupillary reflexes, eye motility, Hirschberg, cover test and monocular pursuit. Children born January-June 2012 were vision screened at general screening visits only in case of visually apparent abnormalities or positive family history. After referral, cause and severity of amblyopia were determined. Visual acuity was measured in all children at 36 and 45months.

    The control and intervention group comprised 5649 versus 5162 children. Amblyopia was diagnosed in 185 (3.3%) versus 159 children (3.1%), outside of screening in 21 (11.4%) versus 25 (15.7%). Between 6 and 24months, 44 (23.8%) versus 27 (17%) (RR=0.67 [95% CI 0.42, 1.09]) were referred and after visual acuity (VA) measurement 120 (64.9%) versus 107 (67.3%). Of 109 versus 108 children with refractive or bilateral amblyopia, 94 (86.2%) versus 92 (85.2%) were detected with VA measurements.     To evaluate dosimetric properties of intensity-modulated proton therapy (IMPT) for simulated treatment planning in patients with atrial fibrillation (AF) targeting left atrial-pulmonary vein junction (LA-PVJ), in comparison with volumetric-modulated arc therapy (VMAT) and helical tomotherapy (TOMO).

    Ten thoracic 4D-CT scans with respiratory motion and one with cardiac motion were used for the study. Ten respiratory 4D-CTs were planned with VMAT, TOMO, and IMPT for simulated AF. Targets at the LA-PVJ were defined as wide-area circumferential ablation line. A single fraction of 25Gy was prescribed to all plans. The interplay effects from cardiac motion were evaluated based on the cardiac 4D-CT scan. Dose-volume histograms (DVHs) of the ITV and normal tissues were compared.     The aim of this study was to investigate whether subclinical hypothyroidism could increase the risk of postoperative complications in patients undergoing primary total knee arthroplasty (TKA).

    A prospective case-control study of 796 patients undergoing primary TKA between January 2015 and January 2020 was performed. A total of 700 patients (87.9%) were female and the average age of included patients was 65.0 years, with a standard deviation of 5.6. The participants who had subclinical hypothyroidism were referred to as the case group, while those without abnormal thyrotropin (TSH) were included in the control group (matched for age and gender). The fasting plasma levels of TSH were tested in the morning in all patients. The diagnosis of subclinical hypothyroidism was completed by a senior endocrinologist based on laboratory tests; namely, a serum TSH ≥ 5 mu/L and normal free thyroxine (FT4). A prospective case-control study of 796 patients undergoing primary TKA between January 2015 and January 2020 was performed.     The aim of this study was to formulate a stable and effective o/w emulsion-based emulgel containing Albizia lebbeck bark extract, which have considerable antioxidant activity.

    Antioxidant activity of Albizia lebbeck bark extract was determined by DPPH (2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl) method. Emulgel containing 3% extract was developed by mixing o/w emulsion in Carbopol gel along with a placebo emulgel without extract (base). In vitro evaluation of these emulgels, that is, liquefaction, color, phase separation, centrifugation, and pH change were carried out for a period of 8weeks at different storage conditions, that is, 8ºC, 25ºC, 40ºC, and 40ºC & 75% relative humidity (RH). In vivo evaluation of emulgels was carried out on 13healthy female volunteers by measuring various parameters of skin, that is, melanin level, erythema level, moisture content, sebum content, and elasticity at regular time intervals after applying emulgel (both base and test formulation) for 8weeks.

    Antioxidant activity of Albizia lebbeck bark extract was 84.7%. Both emulgels (base and test formulation) were stable at all storage conditions. Statistical analysis showed that test formulation produced significant effects (p<0.05) on melanin, erythema level, moisture content, sebum level, and elasticity of skin.

    This study aimed to compare the longitudinal change of the psychological distress of healthcare workers (HCWs) with non-HCWs during the repeated outbreaks of the COVID-19 in Japan.

    The data were retrieved from the Employee Cohort Study in the Covid-19 pandemic in Japan study. An online survey was conducted on March 2020 (T1), on May 2020 (T2), on August 2020 (T3), and on November 2020 (T4). Psychological distress was measured by the Brief Job Stress Questionnaire. A mixed-model repeated-measures ANOVA was conducted as an indicator of the group differences.

    A total sample of analysis was n=996 (HCWs, n=111; non-HCWs, n=885). HCWs consisted of physicians/nurses/midwives and other HCWs (eg, pharmacists, clinical laboratory technicians) in the clinical settings (n=19; 17% and n=61; 55%, respectively), and HCWs not working in the clinical settings (n=31; 28%). Being HCWs were associated with a significant increase in psychological distress from T1 to T2, T3 and T4 (P=.001, P=.002, P<.001; respectively).

This study aimed to assess the efficacy and safety of fludrocortisone in the treatment of post-transplant hyperkalemic RTA.

    This is a retrospective cohort study of all pediatric (aged ≤16years) post-kidney transplant patients who were followed up in KFSH-D, Saudi Arabia from January 2015 until September 2019. A total of 136 pediatric post-renal transplant patients were reviewed, of these, 39 patients who were commenced on fludrocortisone post-transplant treatment and were followed up for at least 6months after fludrocortisone initiation were included in this study.

    Solitary osteochondromas, or osteocartilaginous exostoses (OCEs), represent the most common benign bone tumor. Despite frequently causing symptoms about the knee in younger populations, there is minimal previous literature investigating surgical treatment.

    We retrospectively reviewed the records of patients <20 years old who had undergone surgical treatment of symptomatic, pathologically confirmed, solitary periarticular knee OCE at a single pediatric center between 2003 and 2016. The clinical course, radiographic and pathological features, and complications were assessed. Prospective outreach was performed to investigate patient-reported functional outcomes.

    Two hundred and sixty-four patients (58% male, 81% athletes) underwent excision of a solitary OCE about the knee at a mean age (and standard deviation) of 14.3 ± 2.24 years. Fifty-five percent of the procedures were performed by orthopaedic oncologists, 25% were performed by pediatric orthopaedic surgeons, and 20% were performed by pediatric orty Pediatric Functional Activity Brief Scale (HSS Pedi-FABS) scores were 97 (interquartile range, 93 to 99) and 16.7 ± 8.15, respectively, at a median duration of follow-up of 5.8 years.

    In our large cohort of pediatric patients who underwent excision of solitary knee osteochondromas, most patients were male adolescent athletes. Most commonly, the lesions were pedunculated, were located in the distal part of the femur, and arose from the medial aspect of the knee. Regardless of surgeon training or lesion location, patients demonstrated excellent functional outcomes, with minimal clinically important postoperative complications and recurrences, although patients with sessile lesions and younger age may be at higher risk for complications.

This was a descriptive study that was conducted from July 1, 2014, to November 30, 2017. Participants were 754 hospitalized patients with heart failure (mean age, 70.62 ± 14.78 years; male-to-female ratio, 11.1). Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, χ2 tests, and logistic regression analyses. Patients' average length of stay was 8.92 ± 13.12 days. Thirty-two patients (4.2%) were readmitted, and 100 patients (13.3%) died during hospitalization. Two-thirds (67.7%) experienced dyspnea, and 367 (48.7%) experienced pain. Symptoms and ICU admission were significantly related to patient outcomes. In the regression analyses, dyspnea, pain, and ICU admission were significantly related to higher-than-average lengths of stay. Dyspnea and ICU admission were related to death in hospital. Information regarding patients' symptoms, which was extracted from records, was a valuable resource in examining the relationship between symptoms and patient outcomes. We retrospectively reviewed the records of patients <20 years old who had undergone surgical treatment of symptomatic, pathologically confirmed, solitary periarticular knee OCE at a single pediatric center between 2003 and 2016. The clinical course, radiographic and pathological features, and complications were assessed. Prospective outreach was performed to investigate patient-reported functional outcomes. Two hundred and sixty-four patients (58% male, 81% athletes) underwent excision of a solitary OCE about the knee at a mean age (and standard deviation) of 14.3 ± 2.24 years. Fifty-five percent of the procedures were performed by orthopaedic oncologists, 25% were performed by pediatric orthopaedic surgeons, and 20% were performed by pediatric orty Pediatric Functional Activity Brief Scale (HSS Pedi-FABS) scores were 97 (interquartile range, 93 to 99) and 16.7 ± 8.15, respectively, at a median duration of follow-up of 5.8 years. This was a descriptive study that was conducted from July 1, 2014, to November 30, 2017. Participants were 754 hospitalized patients with heart failure (mean age, 70.62 ± 14.78 years; male-to-female ratio, 11.1). Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, χ2 tests, and logistic regression analyses. Patients' average length of stay was 8.92 ± 13.12 days. Thirty-two patients (4.2%) were readmitted, and 100 patients (13.3%) died during hospitalization. Two-thirds (67.7%) experienced dyspnea, and 367 (48.7%) experienced pain. Symptoms and ICU admission were significantly related to patient outcomes. In the regression analyses, dyspnea, pain, and ICU admission were significantly related to higher-than-average lengths of stay. Dyspnea and ICU admission were related to death in hospital. Information regarding patients' symptoms, which was extracted from records, was a valuable resource in examining the relationship between symptoms and patient outcomes.   • PD-L1 expression associated with ZEB1 expression in the sarcomatoid component of patients with PPC may be useful for predicting patient prognosis.
    Sino-nasal cancer is rare and often diagnosed at advanced stages. Some patients cannot receive curative treatment and are treated with palliative irradiation. We aimed to identify prognostic factors for survival to facilitate treatment personalization for this group.

    Twelve patients treated with palliative radiotherapy for locally advanced sino-nasal cancer were retrospectively analyzed for survival. Ten characteristics were evaluated including age, gender, Karnofsky performance score (KPS), pre-radiotherapy hemoglobin, tumor site, lymph node involvement, histology, equivalent dose in 2 Gy-fractions, completion of radiotherapy and concurrent chemotherapy.

    On univariate analysis, KPS ≥70 (p<0.001) and completion of radiotherapy (p<0.001) were significantly associated with better survival. Chemotherapy showed a trend (p=0.097). In the multivariate analysis, KPS ≥70 was significant (p=0.025), and completion of radiotherapy showed a trend (p=0.080).

    Most patients with breast cancer are assigned to radiotherapy, which may cause fears leading to sleep disorders. Very few data are available regarding the prevalence of sleep disorders and corresponding risk factors.

    Data of 175 patients with breast cancer presenting for adjuvant radiotherapy were retrospectively analyzed. Twenty-three patient and tumor characteristics were investigated for associations with pre-radiotherapy sleep disorders.

    Seventy-eight patients (44.6%) stated sleep disorders prior to radiotherapy. These were significantly associated with higher distress score (p<0.0001); greater number of emotional (p<0.0001), physical (p<0.0001) or practical problems (p<0.001); and request for psycho-oncological support (p<0.001). Trends were found for worse performance status (p=0.062) and higher comorbidity index (p=0.059).

The patient was a 64-year-old male, presenting with a fungating lesion on the tip of his nose which was biopsied, confirming adenocarcinoma likely from a gastrointestinal source. Staging imaging showed extensive lung, liver, and boney metastatic disease. He was initially treated with chemotherapy and trastuzumab.

However, there are limited data to assess whether there is a role for histopathology for MBD despite time and cost of interpretation, as well as whether a positive sample changes the subsequent treatment course.

    Sixty-six cases from 2017 to 2020 were reviewed retrospectively. The median age at surgery was 63.5 years (range of 23 to 84 years), and the primary tumor was most frequently breast (24.2%, n=16), renal (21.2%, n=14) or lung (15.2%, n=10). The most common location of MBD was the femur (60.6%, n=40).

    The overall yield of a positive tissue sample of MBD was 77.3% (n=51). The positive rate from sending intramedullary reamings was 65.4% (n=17 of 26). Among the 66 cases (63 patients), a change in the subsequent clinical management was recorded in 9.1% (n=6). The most common change was related to the medication regimen (n=5), with one change related to recognition of the carcinoma origin via histology, which was previously unknown.

  • Hepatocellular Carcinoma (HCC) is a rare tumor in children and normally carries poor outcomes. The most frequently employed chemotherapy regimen includes cisplatin and doxorubicin (PLADO), but this combination offers limited efficacy. Sorafenib is a multi-tyrosine kinase inhibitor which, following positive studies in adults with HCC, has begun to be introduced in conjunction with PLADO in pediatric oncology with some encouraging results. Based on these findings, the use of sorafenib is become more common in children with unresectable and/or metastatic HCC. The care of patients receiving sorafenib requires appropriate expertise and standardized pediatric guidelines are lacking. An increasing number of children with HCC are expected to receive sorafenib in the years to come. Pediatric oncology clinicians have a key role in identifying side effects early and clinicians caring for children receiving sorafenib need to be familiar with these. This review article provides suitable and practical information on sorafenib for educational development to optimize clinical care and facilitate enhanced patient/parent education. The article addresses specific areas including mechanisms of action, pre-clinical and clinical evidence, dosing and drug administration and toxicities of sorafenib. Clinical research and recommendations for managing sorafenib-related side effects are discussed. Underpinned by research, this article provides pediatric oncology clinicians with the knowledge required to deliver optimal care to children receiving sorafenib.The bacterial pathogen Xanthomonas vasicola pv. vasculorum was first reported in the United States causing bacterial leaf streak on Nebraska corn (Zea mays) in 2016. The bacterium is also known to cause disease in sugarcane, grain sorghum, broom bamboo, and various palm species. The objective of this study was to identify alternative hosts for X. vasicola pv. vasculorum among plants commonly found in corn growing areas of the United States. In repeated greenhouse experiments, 53 species of plants found in the United States that had not been tested previously for susceptibility to X. vasicola pv. vasculorum were inoculated with the pathogen and monitored for symptom development. Eleven species in the family Poaceae exhibited symptoms oat (Avena sativa), rice (Oryza sativa), orchardgrass (Dactylis glomerata), indiangrass (Sorghastrum nutans), big bluestem (Andropogon gerardii), little bluestem (Schizachyrium scoparium), timothy (Phleum pratense), sand bluestem (Andropogon hallii), green foxtail (Setaria viridis), bristly foxtail (Setaria verticillata), and johnsongrass (Sorghum halepense). Yellow nutsedge (Cyperus esculentus) in the Cyperaceae also was a symptomatic host. In addition, endophytic colonization by X. vasicola pv. vasculorum was found in three asymptomatic alternative hosts downy brome (Bromus tectorum), tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea), and western wheatgrass (Pascopyum smithii). Experiments were also conducted in the field to determine the potential for alternative hosts to become infected by natural inoculum. Symptoms developed only in big bluestem and bristly foxtail in field experiments. These results suggest that infection of alternative hosts by X. vasicola pv. vasculorum can occur, but infection rates might be limited by environmental conditions.Corn stovers are rich in carbohydrates and can be used by anaerobic bacteria to produce hydrogen by fermentation. In the present study, using hydrogen production as the main experimental index, the effect of different influential factors on hydrogen production from corn stover saccharification and fermentation was studied, using the response surface method BBD model. The significance of interactions between different influential factors on hydrogen production by simultaneous saccharification and fermentation of corn stover material were investigated and optimized. Results showed that there were several factors affecting simultaneous saccharification fermentative hydrogen production from corn stover, including substrate concentration, inoculation amount, pH value and enzyme concentration. In linear terms, substrate concentration had the greatest influence on hydrogen production by anaerobic simultaneous saccharification and fermentation. In terms of multi-factor interactions, the interaction between pH and enzyme concentration was the most significant. The optimal hydrogen production conditions established from the BBD model were as follows substrate concentration of 25 mg/mL, inoculation amount proportion of 32.62%, initial pH value of 6.50 and enzyme concentration of 172.08 mg/g, resulting in the maximum hydrogen production of 55.29 mL/g TS. The actual maximum hydrogen production reached 56.66 mL/g TS, with these experimental results consistent with the predicted value established from equation fitting. Eleven species in the family Poaceae exhibited symptoms oat (Avena sativa), rice (Oryza sativa), orchardgrass (Dactylis glomerata), indiangrass (Sorghastrum nutans), big bluestem (Andropogon gerardii), little bluestem (Schizachyrium scoparium), timothy (Phleum pratense), sand bluestem (Andropogon hallii), green foxtail (Setaria viridis), bristly foxtail (Setaria verticillata), and johnsongrass (Sorghum halepense). Yellow nutsedge (Cyperus esculentus) in the Cyperaceae also was a symptomatic host. In addition, endophytic colonization by X. vasicola pv. vasculorum was found in three asymptomatic alternative hosts downy brome (Bromus tectorum), tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea), and western wheatgrass (Pascopyum smithii). Experiments were also conducted in the field to determine the potential for alternative hosts to become infected by natural inoculum. Symptoms developed only in big bluestem and bristly foxtail in field experiments. These results suggest that infection of alternative hosts by X. vasicola pv. vasculorum can occur, but infection rates might be limited by environmental conditions.Corn stovers are rich in carbohydrates and can be used by anaerobic bacteria to produce hydrogen by fermentation. In the present study, using hydrogen production as the main experimental index, the effect of different influential factors on hydrogen production from corn stover saccharification and fermentation was studied, using the response surface method BBD model. The significance of interactions between different influential factors on hydrogen production by simultaneous saccharification and fermentation of corn stover material were investigated and optimized. Results showed that there were several factors affecting simultaneous saccharification fermentative hydrogen production from corn stover, including substrate concentration, inoculation amount, pH value and enzyme concentration. In linear terms, substrate concentration had the greatest influence on hydrogen production by anaerobic simultaneous saccharification and fermentation. In terms of multi-factor interactions, the interaction between pH and enzyme concentration was the most significant. The optimal hydrogen production conditions established from the BBD model were as follows substrate concentration of 25 mg/mL, inoculation amount proportion of 32.62%, initial pH value of 6.50 and enzyme concentration of 172.08 mg/g, resulting in the maximum hydrogen production of 55.29 mL/g TS. The actual maximum hydrogen production reached 56.66 mL/g TS, with these experimental results consistent with the predicted value established from equation fitting. This study provides a reference for hydrogen production by anaerobic synchronous saccharification fermentation using corn stover as substrate and lays a foundation and provides technical support for the industrialization of biological hydrogen production using corn stover as substrate.Fibrosis, as a common final pathway in many renal diseases, contributes significantly to the decline of organ function and to progression to end-stage renal disease. To establish therapeutic interventions that target fibrosis, animal models are essential. The most widely used model of renal fibrosis is the unilateral ureteral obstruction (UUO) model. Typically, the control for this model is a sham-operated animal. Sham surgery causes pain and distress to these control animals, and here we aim to show that there is no difference in the main read-outs of this model between sham-operated animals and non-operated C57BL/6J mice.
