  • In 2019, the Korean Society of Maternal-Fetal Medicine developed the first Korean clinical practice guidelines for prenatal aneuploidy screening and diagnostic testing. These guidelines were developed by adapting established clinical practice guidelines in other countries that were searched systematically, and the guidelines aim to assist in decision making of healthcare providers providing prenatal care and to be used as a source for education and communication with pregnant women in Korea. This article delineates clinical practice guidelines specifically for maternal serum screening for fetal aneuploidy and cell-free DNA (cfDNA) screening. A total of 19 key questions (12 for maternal serum and 7 for cfDNA screening) were defined. It is not recommended for the screening of microdeletion, 5) The optimal timing of cfDNA screening is 10 weeks of gestation and beyond, and 6) cfDNA screening is not recommended for women with multiple gestations. Cell atlases of experimental embryology and human embryogenesis at single-cell resolution will provide an encyclopedia of genes that define key stages from gastrulation to organogenesis. This technology, combined with computational models to discover key organizational principles, was recognized by Science magazine as the "Breakthrough of the year" for 2018 due to transformative potential on the way we study how human cells mature over a lifetime, how tissues regenerate, and how cells change in diseases (e.g., patient-derived organoids to screen disease-specific targets and design precision therapy). Profiling transcriptomes at the single-cell level can fulfill the need for greater detail in the molecular progression of all cell lineages, from pluripotency to adulthood and how cell-cell signaling pathways control progression at every step.   • The purpose of this study was to evaluate the in vitro and in vivo efficiency of derivatives of 8-Hydroxyquinoline (8HQ) in controlling the fungus Ilyonectria liriodendri.

    The in vitro tests consisted of assessing its susceptibility to the minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) and the inhibition of mycelial growth. While the in vivo tests consisted of applying and assessing the most effective products for the protection of wounds, in both preventive+curative and curative forms. Loss-of-function variants cause severe neurodegenerative and developmental disorders. We have identified three ATP8A2 variants in unrelated Iranian families that cause intellectual disability, dystonia, below-average head circumference, mild optic atrophy, and developmental delay. Additionally, all the affected individuals displayed tooth abnormalities associated with defects in teeth development. Two variants (p.Asp825His and p.Met438Val) reside in critical functional domains of ATP8A2. These variants express at very low levels and lack ATPase activity. Inhibitor studies indicate that these variants are misfolded and degraded by the cellular proteasome. We conclude that Asp825, which coordinates with the Mg2+ ion within the ATP binding site, and Met438 are essential for the proper folding of ATP8A2 into a functional flippase. We also provide evidence on the association of tooth abnormalities with defects in ATP8A2, thereby expanding the clinical spectrum of the associated disease.The carbon nanotube (CNT) yarn supercapacitor has high potential for in vivo energy storage because it can be used in aqueous environments and stitched to inner parts of the body, such as blood vessels. Here, we report an implantable CNT yarn supercapacitor inspired by the cellular redox system. In all living cells, nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD) is a key redox biomolecule responsible for cellular energy transduction to produce adenosine triphosphate (ATP). Based on this redox system, CNT yarn electrodes were fabricated by inserting a twist in CNT sheets with electrochemically deposited NAD and benzoquinone for redox shuttling. Consequently, the NAD/BQ/CNT yarn electrodes exhibited the maximum area capacitance (55.73 mF cm-2 ) under physiological conditions, such as phosphate-buffered saline and serum. In addition, the yarn electrodes showed a negligible loss of capacitance after 10 000 repeated charge/discharge cycles and deformation tests (bending/knotting). More importantly, NAD/BQ/CNT yarn electrodes implanted into the abdominal cavity of a rat's skin exhibited the stable in vivo electrical performance of a supercapacitor. An overview of the main practical differences in preclinical compared with clinical MRS studies is presented, as well as the additional biochemical information that can be obtained in animal models in terms of metabolite concentrations and metabolic flux measurements. The properties of high-field preclinical MRS and the technical limitations are also described.
    This study aims to develop an artificial intelligence-based method to screen patients with left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) of 50% or lesser using electrocardiogram (ECG) data alone.

    Convolutional neural network (CNN) is a class of deep neural networks, which has been widely used in medical image recognition. We collected standard 12-lead ECGand transthoracic echocardiogram (TTE) data including the LVEF value. Then, we paired the ECG and TTE data from the same individual. For multiple ECG-TTE pairs from a single individual, only the earliest data pair was included. All the ECG-TTE pairs were randomly divided into the training, validation, or testing data set in a ratio of 911 to create or evaluate the CNN model. Finally, we assessed the screening performance by overall accuracy, sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value, and negative predictive value.

    Observational studies suggest that the use of antihypertensive medications (AHMs) is associated with a reduced risk of Alzheimer's disease (AD); however, these findings may be biased by confounding and reverse causality. We aimed to explore the effects of blood pressure (BP) and lowering systolic BP (SBP) via the protein targets of different AHMs on AD through a two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) approach.

    Genetic proxies from genome-wide association studies of BP traits and BP-lowering variants in genes encoding AHM targets were extracted. Estimates were calculated by inverse-variance weighted method as the main model. MR Egger regression and leave-one-out analysis were performed to identify potential violations.

    There was limited evidence that genetically predicted SBP/diastolic BP level affected AD risk based on 400/398 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs), respectively (all P > 0.05). Suitable genetic variants for β-blockers (1 SNP), angiotensin receptor blockers (1 SNP), calcium channel blockers (CCBs, 45 SNPs), and thiazide diuretics (5 SNPs) were identified. Genetic proxies for CCB [odds ratio (OR) = 0.959, 95% confidence interval (CI) = 0.941-0.977, P = 3.92 × 10

    The pathogenic BRCA1/2 germline mutations contributed to Hereditary Breast and Ovarian Cancer (HBOC) susceptibility. The features of BRCA1/2 germline mutations in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) have not been systematically studied. Here we performed the first study investigating the characteristics of pathogenic BRCA1/2 germline mutations in Chinese NSCLC patients and compared them with those from Chinese HBOC.

    Information on BRCA1/2 germline mutations from 9010 Chinese NSCLC patients were collected from available studies and analyzed, and compared with the BRCA1/2 germline mutations from Chinese HBOC BRCA1/2 database (LOVD database, 20,523 patients).

    19 (20 carriers, 0.22 %) pathogenic BRCA1 and 60 (66 carriers, 0.73 %) pathogenic BRCA2 germline mutations from NSCLC were identified. The carrier frequency of BRCA1/2in Chinese NSCLC patients (86/9010 = 0.95 %) was significantly lower than that in Chinese breast and ovary cancer patients (1481/20,523 = 7.2 %) (P < 0.001). We found that frameshift an HBOC, higher ratio of nonsense mutations and carriers than HBOC, and novel BRCA1/2 germline mutations never found in HBOC.

We aimed to explore the effects of blood pressure (BP) and lowering systolic BP (SBP) via the protein targets of different AHMs on AD through a two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) approach. Genetic proxies from genome-wide association studies of BP traits and BP-lowering variants in genes encoding AHM targets were extracted. Estimates were calculated by inverse-variance weighted method as the main model. MR Egger regression and leave-one-out analysis were performed to identify potential violations. There was limited evidence that genetically predicted SBP/diastolic BP level affected AD risk based on 400/398 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs), respectively (all P > 0.05). Suitable genetic variants for β-blockers (1 SNP), angiotensin receptor blockers (1 SNP), calcium channel blockers (CCBs, 45 SNPs), and thiazide diuretics (5 SNPs) were identified. Genetic proxies for CCB [odds ratio (OR) = 0.959, 95% confidence interval (CI) = 0.941-0.977, P = 3.92 × 10 ] and overall use of AHMs (OR = 0.961, 95% CI = 0.944-0.978, P = 5.74 × 10 , SNPs = 52) were associated with a lower risk of AD. Information on BRCA1/2 germline mutations from 9010 Chinese NSCLC patients were collected from available studies and analyzed, and compared with the BRCA1/2 germline mutations from Chinese HBOC BRCA1/2 database (LOVD database, 20,523 patients). 19 (20 carriers, 0.22 %) pathogenic BRCA1 and 60 (66 carriers, 0.73 %) pathogenic BRCA2 germline mutations from NSCLC were identified.     Management of tumour bleeding remains a challenge in oncology. With a number of methods available, radiotherapy still holds a crucial place. There are no standard guidelines for dose fractionation of haemostatic radiotherapy (HRT), and it varies from case to case. We aimed to study the effectiveness of HRT.

    We retrospectively analysed the effectiveness of HRT in 70 patients in terms of control of bleeding and overall survival, who presented to us with advanced cancers from July 2014 to June 2017.

    The median age was 48 (range 23-76) years, and male to female ratio was 2.181. The most common malignancy encountered was lung and gynaecological (both 17.1%). Stage IV was the most common stage (48.6%) of the primary tumour. The site of bleeding was the primary tumour in 50 (71.4%) patients, whereas fungating regional nodes were the cause in the remaining. The median duration between initial diagnosis and HRT was 5 (range 0-19) months. Seventeen patients (24.3%) had a history of prior radiotherapy. Fifty-one pe depending on several factors. However, the overall prognosis remains poor.
    We aimed to identify the most suited anthropometric measure for the prediction of risk for incident coronary heart disease (CHD) among the Turkish population.

    We collected data on body mass index, waist circumference (WC), hip circumference, waist-to-hip ratio (WHR), waist-to-height ratio (WHtR) and a body shape index. We analysed these using both C-statistics and Cox regression models adjusted for age, systolic blood pressure, glucose and high-density lipoprotein (HDL)-cholesterol for assessing risk of incident CHD among 3203 Turkish Adult Risk Factor (TARF) study participants (mean [SD] age 48.5 [11] years).

    Over a mean follow-up of 9.93 years, new CHD developed in 573 individuals. Multi-adjusted C-statistics were highest for WHtR followed by WC, in both sexes. Except WHR, all measures were significantly associated with incident CHD in combined sexes in the full model. There was a sex difference, however, in the mediation of the three risk factors for adiposity; these attenuated hazard ratios (HRs) in males, whereas in females, significant prediction of incident CHD persisted for each measure. WC (HR 1.36 [95% CI 1.13; 1.64]), followed by WHtR (HR 1.24 [95% CI 1.10; 1.40]), were in combined sex, as in females, the most informative surrogates of adiposity. Hip circumference did not protect, but rather conferred modest CHD risk, especially in females, rendering a low utility of predictive value for WHR. The CHD risk curve did not have a J shape.

We did a systematic review and meta-analysis to compute pooled estimate of blindness in India among adults aged 50 years and above by using recent and old definitions of blindness.

    We retrieved population-based studies/surveys reporting the prevalence of blindness using recent (presenting vision <3/60 better eye) and previous (presenting vision <6/ 60 better eye) definitions in India during 1990-2017 from key search engines and grey literature.     The study was conducted in three phases A survey to investigate if the SmartOptometry App was easy to download, understand and test (phase I), an in-clinic comparison of VA measured in a random testing order with four tools namely COMPlog, Reduced Snellen near vision, Peek Acuity (Distance VA) and SmartOptometry (Near VA) (phase II) and a repeatability study on these 4 tools by measuring VA again (phase III). The study recruited the employees of our institute and adhered to the strict COVID-19 protocols of testing.

    Phase I Survey (n = 40) showed 90% of participants used android phones, 60% reported that instructions were clear, and all users were able to self-assess their near VA with SmartOptometry App. Phase II (n = 68) revealed that Peek Acuity was comparable to COMPlog VA (P = 0.31), however SmartOptometry was statistically significantly different (within 2 log MAR lines) from Reduced Snellen near vision test, particularly for young (n = 44, P = 0.004) and emmetropic (n = 16, P = 0.04) participants. All the 4 tests were found to be repeatable in phase III (n = 10) with a coefficient of repeatability ≤0.14.

    Smartphone-based apps were easy to download and can be used for checking patient's distance and near visual acuity. An effect of age and refractive error should be considered when interpreting the results. Further studies with real-time patients are required to identify potential benefits and challenges to solve.

  • Neutropenia is an adverse effect of vincristine when used in multidrug chemotherapy protocols.

    To determine the incidence of neutropenia, identify potential risk factors for neutropenia, and determine the effect of neutropenia on outcome, in dogs receiving vincristine for treatment of immune-mediated thrombocytopenia (ITP).

    One hundred twenty-seven client-owned dogs presumptively diagnosed with ITP.

    In this retrospective cohort study, medical records were reviewed to identify dogs presumptively diagnosed with ITP, and treated with vincristine, over a 15-year period. Logistic regression was used to identify risk factors for the development of neutropenia in dogs receiving vincristine. Time to platelet count ≥40 000 platelets/μL, survival, and duration of hospitalization were compared between neutropenic and non-neutropenic dogs.

    Vincristine was administered to 127 dogs with presumptive ITP; 19 became neutropenic. Administration of cyclosporine was significantly (P < .001) associated with the develceiving vincristine treatment for ITP, particularly if administered in conjunction with cyclosporine.Genes involved in the homologous recombination repair pathway-as exemplified by BRCA1, BRCA2, PALB2, ATM, and CHEK2-are frequently associated with hereditary breast and ovarian cancer syndrome. Germline mutations in the loci of these genes with loss of heterozygosity or additional somatic truncation at the WT allele lead to the development of breast cancers with characteristic clinicopathological features and prominent genomic features of homologous recombination deficiency, otherwise referred to as "BRCAness." Although clinical genetic testing for these and other genes has increased the chances of identifying pathogenic variants, there has also been an increase in the prevalence of variants of uncertain significance, which poses a challenge to patient care because of the difficulties associated with making further clinical decisions. To overcome this challenge, we sought to develop a methodology to reclassify the pathogenicity of these unknown variants using statistical modeling of BRCAness. The model was developed with Lasso logistic regression by comparing 116 genomic attributes derived from 37 BRCA1/2 biallelic mutant and 32 homologous recombination-quiescent breast cancer exomes. The model showed 95.8% and 86.7% accuracies in the training cohort and The Cancer Genome Atlas validation cohort, respectively. Through application of the model for variant reclassification of homologous recombination-associated hereditary breast and ovarian cancer causal genes and further assessment with clinicopathological features, we finally identified one likely pathogenic and five likely benign variants. As such, the BRCAness model developed from the tumor exome was robust and provided a reasonable basis for variant reclassification.Endemics co-occur because they evolved in situ and persist regionally or because they evolved ex situ and later dispersed to shared habitats, generating evolutionary or ecological endemicity centres, respectively. We investigate whether different endemicity centres can intertwine in the region ranging from Alps to Sicily, by studying their butterfly fauna. We gathered an extensive occurrence data set for butterflies of the study area (27,123 records, 269 species, in cells of 0.5 × 0.5 degrees of latitude-longitude). We applied molecular-based delimitation methods (GMYC model) to 26,557 cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 (COI) sequences of Western Palearctic butterflies. We identified entities based on molecular delimitations and/or the checklist of European butterflies and objectively attributed occurrences to their most probable entity. We obtained a zoogeographic regionalisation based on the 69 endemics of the area. Using phylogenetic ANOVA we tested if endemics from different centres differ from each other and from nonendemics for key ecological traits and divergence time. Endemicity showed high incidence in the Alps and Southern Italy. The regionalisation separated the Alps from the Italian Peninsula and Sicily. The endemics of different centres showed a high turnover and differed in phylogenetic distances, phenology and distribution traits. Endemics are on average younger than nonendemics and the Peninsula-Sicily endemics also have lower variance in divergence than those from the Alps. The observed variation identifies Alpine endemics as paleoendemics, now occupying an ecological centre, and the Peninsula-Sicily ones as neoendemics, that diverged in the region since the Pleistocene.     Neutropenia is an adverse effect of vincristine when used in multidrug chemotherapy protocols. To determine the incidence of neutropenia, identify potential risk factors for neutropenia, and determine the effect of neutropenia on outcome, in dogs receiving vincristine for treatment of immune-mediated thrombocytopenia (ITP). One hundred twenty-seven client-owned dogs presumptively diagnosed with ITP. In this retrospective cohort study, medical records were reviewed to identify dogs presumptively diagnosed with ITP, and treated with vincristine, over a 15-year period. Logistic regression was used to identify risk factors for the development of neutropenia in dogs receiving vincristine. Time to platelet count ≥40 000 platelets/μL, survival, and duration of hospitalization were compared between neutropenic and non-neutropenic dogs. Vincristine was administered to 127 dogs with presumptive ITP; 19 became neutropenic. Administration of cyclosporine was significantly (P < .001) associated with the develceiving vincristine treatment for ITP, particularly if administered in conjunction with cyclosporine.Genes involved in the homologous recombination repair pathway-as exemplified by BRCA1, BRCA2, PALB2, ATM, and CHEK2-are frequently associated with hereditary breast and ovarian cancer syndrome. Germline mutations in the loci of these genes with loss of heterozygosity or additional somatic truncation at the WT allele lead to the development of breast cancers with characteristic clinicopathological features and prominent genomic features of homologous recombination deficiency, otherwise referred to as "BRCAness." Although clinical genetic testing for these and other genes has increased the chances of identifying pathogenic variants, there has also been an increase in the prevalence of variants of uncertain significance, which poses a challenge to patient care because of the difficulties associated with making further clinical decisions. To overcome this challenge, we sought to develop a methodology to reclassify the pathogenicity of these unknown variants using statistical modeling of BRCAness. The model was developed with Lasso logistic regression by comparing 116 genomic attributes derived from 37 BRCA1/2 biallelic mutant and 32 homologous recombination-quiescent breast cancer exomes. The model showed 95.8% and 86.7% accuracies in the training cohort and The Cancer Genome Atlas validation cohort, respectively. Through application of the model for variant reclassification of homologous recombination-associated hereditary breast and ovarian cancer causal genes and further assessment with clinicopathological features, we finally identified one likely pathogenic and five likely benign variants. We investigate whether different endemicity centres can intertwine in the region ranging from Alps to Sicily, by studying their butterfly fauna. We gathered an extensive occurrence data set for butterflies of the study area (27,123 records, 269 species, in cells of 0.5 × 0.5 degrees of latitude-longitude). We applied molecular-based delimitation methods (GMYC model) to 26,557 cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 (COI) sequences of Western Palearctic butterflies. We identified entities based on molecular delimitations and/or the checklist of European butterflies and objectively attributed occurrences to their most probable entity. We obtained a zoogeographic regionalisation based on the 69 endemics of the area. Using phylogenetic ANOVA we tested if endemics from different centres differ from each other and from nonendemics for key ecological traits and divergence time. Endemicity showed high incidence in the Alps and Southern Italy. The regionalisation separated the Alps from the Italian Peninsula and Sicily. The endemics of different centres showed a high turnover and differed in phylogenetic distances, phenology and distribution traits. Endemics are on average younger than nonendemics and the Peninsula-Sicily endemics also have lower variance in divergence than those from the Alps. The observed variation identifies Alpine endemics as paleoendemics, now occupying an ecological centre, and the Peninsula-Sicily ones as neoendemics, that diverged in the region since the Pleistocene.   • To describe human papilloma virus (HPV) vaccination practice among adolescent girls with cystic fibrosis (CF) and to identify reasons for non-vaccination.

TASK-3 is highly expressed in melanoma and breast cancer cells and has been proposed to promote tumor formation. Here we investigated whether pharmacological modulation of TASK-3, and specifically of mitochondrial TASK-3 (mitoTASK-3), had any effect on cancer cell survival and mitochondrial physiology. A novel, mitochondriotropic version of the specific TASK-3 inhibitor IN-THPP has been synthesized by addition of a positively charged triphenylphosphonium moiety. While IN-THPP was unable to induce apoptosis, mitoIN-THPP decreased survival of breast cancer cells and efficiently killed melanoma lines, which we show to express mitoTASK-3. Cell death was accompanied by mitochondrial membrane depolarization and fragmentation of the mitochondrial network, suggesting a role of the channel in the maintenance of the correct function of this organelle. In accordance, cells treated with mitoIN-THPP became rapidly depleted of mitochondrial ATP which resulted in activation of the AMP-dependent kinase AMPK. Importantly, cell survival was not affected in mouse embryonic fibroblasts and the effect of mitoIN-THPP was less pronounced in human melanoma cells stably knocked down for TASK-3 expression, indicating a certain degree of selectivity of the drug both for pathological cells and for the channel. In addition, mitoIN-THPP inhibited cancer cell migration to a higher extent than IN-THPP in two melanoma cell lines. Vasoactive intestinal peptide (VIP) acts as a neurotransmitter, neurotrophic or neuroprotective factor in the central nervous system (CNS), also displaying anti-inflammatory and neurogenic actions. In the hippocampus, a brain area implicated in learning and memory, VIP released from basket cells and/or interneuron-selective interneurons controls GABAergic transmission and pyramidal cell activity influencing hippocampal-dependent synaptic plasticity (long-term potentiation and long-term depression) and cognition. VPAC1 receptor activation enhances hippocampal synaptic transmission by fostering disinhibition, while stimulation of VPAC2 receptors favours pyramidal cell excitability. Interestingly, VIP released from interneurons has potent anti-inflammatory actions, participates in the maintenance of the blood-brain barrier integrity, and strengthens neurogenesis. VPAC1 and VPAC2 receptors play differential roles in the regulation of the neuro-immune interactions. In this context, we gathered here the available information concerning the impact of VIP on neurotransmission and neuronal excitability in MTLE-HS and discuss the preventive use of selective VIP receptor ligands to abrogate epileptogenesis in MTLE-HS by controlling synaptic plasticity, neurogenesis and neuronal survival, neuroinflammation, and blood-brain barrier damage.

A thorough understanding of the patient’s medical history and biopsy specimen are necessary to make a definite diagnosis and offer appropriate treatment.Objective To investigate the role of the application of role-play in endodontic study in improving the communication skills of Chinese dental undergraduates prior to their direct interactions with patients at the Fourth Military Medical University’s School of Stomatology, China. Methods Students were recruited from the 5-year bachelor’s programme (n = 36) and randomly divided into six groups, and from the 8-year DDS programme (n = 10) and randomly divided into two groups to participate in the role-play training. Cases selected randomly from the case pool were distributed to the groups. The teacher gave an outline of the roles in the simulation. Each member of each group randomly selected their own role for the role-play. Four types of surveys were distributed to students and faculty members at different points after the role-plays had taken place, to evaluate their attitude towards the use of role-plays in endodontic study. Frequency analysis and a one sample t test were used to describe and analyse students’ acceptance of role-play as a teaching technique. The level of statistical significance was set at P less then 0.05. Results Students’ performance and satisfaction as well as the supporting faculty responses were very favourable towards role-playing. In total, 93.5% of students responded favourably to the role-play, answering ‘strongly agree’ or ‘agree’ to the positive statements about their role-play performance. A total of 95.1% of students stated that they had benefited psychologically and technically from the role-play (‘strongly agree’ or ‘agree’) after their 1-year rotating internship. Conclusion The application of role-play in endodontic study is an effective way of educating Chinese dental undergraduates and can be beneficial for their transition from students to dentists.Objective To investigate the influence of CYP1A1 rs1048943 on short- and long-term outcomes of nonsurgical periodontal therapy (NSPT) for generalised aggressive periodon- titis (GAgP). Methods The CYP1A1 rs1048943 polymorphisms of 224 GAgP patients were genotyped by time-of-flight mass spectrometry. A total of 125 patients received NSPT and subsequent followup for 3 months. Of the 125 patients, 81 were followed for at least 3 years. Clinical periodontal parameters were collected at baseline and at the follow-up visits. Negative binomial regression was used to analyse the association between the number of teeth lost during the 3-year observation period and CYP1A1 rs1048943 genotypes. Results The mean probing depth (PD) and percentage of sites with Bleeding Index (BI) ≥ 3 were all significantly greater in CYP1A1 rs1048943 G allele carriers than non-carriers at 3 months and 3 years after treatment (P 0.05). Furthermore, the changes of percentage of sites with BI ≥ 3 were significantly smaller in G allele carriers than non-carriers at 3 months and 3 years after treatment (P less then 0.05). GAgP patients with the GG genotype had lost more over the 3-year follow-up period compared with patients with the AA genotype (P less then 0.05). Conclusion These data indicated that the CYP1A1 rs1048943 AG/GG genotypes may influence the short- and long-term outcomes of NSPT in GAgP patients.Objective To evaluate the accuracy of digital models obtained from intraoral scanning of edentulous maxilla and mandible models with and without resin markers. Methods A pair of standard edentulous models were scanned using a laboratory scanner and saved as reference models. The edentulous models were fixed onto a phantom head and scanned with an intraoral scanner (IOS) five times each. Six resin markers were attached on the maxilla model and two on the mandible model, and another five intraoral scans were taken of each model. The scanning time and number of images were recorded. The digital models obtained using the IOS were superimposed on the reference models using image processing software. The trueness and precision of the models made using the IOS were evaluated, and the scanning time and number of images were also compared. Results The average trueness and precision of the IOS in the maxilla model with resin markers were 135.50 ± 36.28 μm and 254.55 ± 40.62 μm, respectively, while those in the mandible were 161.40 ± 55.45 μm and 368.75 ± 91.03 μm, respectively. Placing resin markers on the edentulous maxilla and mandible did not improve the trueness of the IOS, but placing resin markers on the edentulous maxilla improved the precision and scanning efficiency. However, placing resin markers on the buccal shelf of the edentulous mandible decreased the precision and increased the scanning time. Conclusion Resin markers placed on the hard palate of edentulous maxillae could improve the precision of the IOS and improve scanning efficiency. Results Students’ performance and satisfaction as well as the supporting faculty responses were very favourable towards role-playing. In total, 93.5% of students responded favourably to the role-play, answering ‘strongly agree’ or ‘agree’ to the positive statements about their role-play performance. A total of 95.1% of students stated that they had benefited psychologically and technically from the role-play (‘strongly agree’ or ‘agree’) after their 1-year rotating internship. Conclusion The application of role-play in endodontic study is an effective way of educating Chinese dental undergraduates and can be beneficial for their transition from students to dentists.Objective To investigate the influence of CYP1A1 rs1048943 on short- and long-term outcomes of nonsurgical periodontal therapy (NSPT) for generalised aggressive periodon- titis (GAgP). Methods The CYP1A1 rs1048943 polymorphisms of 224 GAgP patients were genotyped by time-of-flight mass spectrometry. A total of 125 patients received NSPT and subsequent followup for 3 months. Of the 125 patients, 81 were followed for at least 3 years. Clinical periodontal parameters were collected at baseline and at the follow-up visits. Negative binomial regression was used to analyse the association between the number of teeth lost during the 3-year observation period and CYP1A1 rs1048943 genotypes. Results The mean probing depth (PD) and percentage of sites with Bleeding Index (BI) ≥ 3 were all significantly greater in CYP1A1 rs1048943 G allele carriers than non-carriers at 3 months and 3 years after treatment (P 0.05). Furthermore, the changes of percentage of sites with BI ≥ 3 were significantly smaller in G allele carriers than non-carriers at 3 months and 3 years after treatment (P less then 0.05). GAgP patients with the GG genotype had lost more over the 3-year follow-up period compared with patients with the AA genotype (P less then 0.05). Conclusion These data indicated that the CYP1A1 rs1048943 AG/GG genotypes may influence the short- and long-term outcomes of NSPT in GAgP patients.Objective To evaluate the accuracy of digital models obtained from intraoral scanning of edentulous maxilla and mandible models with and without resin markers. Methods A pair of standard edentulous models were scanned using a laboratory scanner and saved as reference models. The edentulous models were fixed onto a phantom head and scanned with an intraoral scanner (IOS) five times each. Six resin markers were attached on the maxilla model and two on the mandible model, and another five intraoral scans were taken of each model. The scanning time and number of images were recorded. The digital models obtained using the IOS were superimposed on the reference models using image processing software. The trueness and precision of the models made using the IOS were evaluated, and the scanning time and number of images were also compared. Results The average trueness and precision of the IOS in the maxilla model with resin markers were 135.50 ± 36.28 μm and 254.55 ± 40.62 μm, respectively, while those in the mandible were 161.40 ± 55.45 μm and 368.75 ± 91.03 μm, respectively. Placing resin markers on the edentulous maxilla and mandible did not improve the trueness of the IOS, but placing resin markers on the edentulous maxilla improved the precision and scanning efficiency. However, placing resin markers on the buccal shelf of the edentulous mandible decreased the precision and increased the scanning time. Conclusion Resin markers placed on the hard palate of edentulous maxillae could improve the precision of the IOS and improve scanning efficiency.   • In this article, we discuss how the improvement of culinary techniques with the dissemination of knowledge about meat preparation conditions is an effective strategy for reducing the formation and ingestion of HAs and PAHs; this is important due to the growing evidence about the association between meat consumption and chronic diseases. This is the first systematic review with meta-analysis about this topic and can guide industry, food services, and population to improve the safety associated with meat consumption.Margin status is one of the significant prognostic factors for recurrence in breast-conserving surgery (BCS). The issue that merits consideration for oncologic safety and cost-effectiveness about the modalities to assure clear margins at initial surgical intervention remains controversial after neo-adjuvant chemotherapy (NAC). The presented study aimed to assess the impact of intraoperative ultrasound (IOUS)-guided surgery on accurate localization of tumor site, adequacy of excision with clear margins, and healthy tissue sacrifice in BCS after NAC. Patients who had IOUS-guided BCS ater NAC were reviewed. No patient had preoperative localization with wire or radiotracer. Intraoperative real-time sonographic localization, sonographic margin assessment during resection, macroscopic and sonographic examination of specimen, and cavity shavings (CS) were done as the standard procedure. No frozen assessment was performed. One hundred ninety-four patients were included, in which 42.5% had pCR. IOUS-guided surgery accomplished successful localization of the targeted lesions in all patients. Per protocol, all inked margins on CS specimens were reported to be tumor-free in permanent histopathology. No re-excision or mastectomy was required. For a setting without CS, the negative predictive value (NPV) of IOUS rate was 96%. IOUS was found to over and underestimate tumor response to NAC both in 2% of patients. IOUS-guided surgery seems to be an efficient modality to perform adequate BCS after NAC with no additional localization method. Especially, when CS is integrated as a standard to BCS, IOUS seems to provide safe surgery for patients with no false negativity and a high rate of NPV.The use of functionalized aldimines has been demonstrated as newly structural 1,4-dipole precursors under carbene catalysis. More importantly, enantiodivergent organocatalysis has been successfully developed using carbene catalysts with the same absolute configuration, leading to both (R)- and (S)- enantiomers of six-membered heterocycles with quaternary carbon centers. This strategy features a broad substrate scope, mild reaction conditions, and good enantiomeric ratio. DFT calculation results indicated that hydrogen bond C-H⋅⋅⋅F interactions between the catalyst and substrate are the key factors for controlling and even switching the enantioselectivity. These new 1,4-dipoles can also react with isatin and its imines under carbene catalysis, allowing for access to the spiro oxindoles with excellent enantiomeric ratios.
    Purpose of the article is to discuss the use of the scapular tip free flap (STFF) for the reconstruction of maxillary defects.

    A retrospective evaluation of patients who underwent maxillary reconstruction with STFF is presented. Patients were evaluated with respect to complications, function, and cosmesis.

    Study population consisted of 53 patients. All ***** survived and partial bone resorption only occurred in a young patient. Minor complications included two instances of partial muscular necrosis. The donor site was primarily closed in all patients. Mouth opening was assessed as good (>3 cm) in 41 patients, partially limited (2-3 cm) in 9 patients, and limited (<2 cm) in 3 patients. Dental rehabilitation was achieved in 35 patients; esthetic results were assessed by patient as excellent in 19 patients, good in 28 patients, and poor in 6 patients.

We studied the effect of antiresorptives combined with a corticosteroid or antiestrogen on oral mucosal keratinocytes and fibroblasts.

    Human gingival keratinocyte and fibroblast cell lines were exposed to bisphosphonates (BPs) and denosumab in different concentrations and durations together with an antiestrogen or corticosteroid. Changes in cell viability, proliferation and migration after exposures were measured. Data were evaluated with hierarchical linear mixed model for repeated measurements.

  • This is the first research stating the toxicological differences between sonicated and non-sonicated polystyrene nanoparticle samples using Daphnia magna as test organism.Arsenic is ranked in the top ten environmental toxicants but its impact on type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and its association with other human health effects is contradictory. We aimed in this study to compare the urinary arsenic concentration (u As) in older age adults (> 40 years) and their T2DM subgroup in an age and gender-matched case control study to find the association of u As with, diet, oxidative stress, smoking, anthropometric factors, and lifestyle in our study participants. Face-to-face interviews based on structured questionnaires were conducted on 200 female and male volunteers (100 cases and 100 control). Considering the exclusion criteria, u As concentration and serum biomarkers of oxidative stress (malondialdehyde, superoxide dismutase, catalase) of 30 newly diagnosed T2DM and 30 control were determined by ICP-mass analysis and ELISA reader respectively. Despite the similarities in sociodemographic, diet, and lifestyle factors in males and females and their T2DM subgroups, a 4 times difference in u As levels between T2DM (93.7 ng/L (32)) and their healthy counterparts (23.7 ng/L (2.3)) without meaningful associations with gender, age, BMI, diet, and lifestyle was observed. Mean u As concentration in total population of smokers was significantly higher than non-smokers ((119 ng/L vs. 22.5 ng/L (p = 0.03)) and oxidative stress markers were not significantly higher in T2DM smokers than non-smokers. Chronic arsenic exposure through smoking could be contributed to the incidence of T2DM in older age adults. Oxidative stress markers were not significantly increased in smoker subgroup compared with non-smokers but except smoking pattern, other variables did not affect u As concentration. In most waterbodies including lakes and reservoirs, total phosphorus concentration, chlorophyll a concentration, and Secchi disk visibility in association with species composition are the common criteria to classify lakes and reservoir as oligotrophic, mesotrophic, and eutrophic. Nutrient-rich runoff from cultivated land and industrialized and urbanized cities concentrated in phosphorus are the critical factors that drove eutrophication in water bodies. Among others, controlling external loading of nutrient, ecological, and mechanical methods were found to be common mechanisms to prevent and recover lake eutrophication. Avoiding the factors that are under human control, i.e., a reduction of external loading of nutrients especially targeted on phosphorus reduction into the water basins, relocates sewage, industrial and domestic waste discharges to be lined out of the catchment of the lake. Furthermore, motivating the community to use less phosphorus-containing fertilizers and promoting phosphorus-free detergents are suggested solutions to sustainably prevent and reduce eutrophication in the long run. In this study, a novel Co3O4/CeO2 catalyst was fabricated and employed as a peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activator to generate SO4•- for phenol degradation. The Co3O4/CeO2 catalyst exhibited a good catalytic performance at a wide pH range of 3.4 to 10.8, and 100% phenol (20 mg/L) was removed within 50-min reaction under optimal conditions with 0.2 g/L catalyst and 2.0 g/L PMS at room temperature. The transformation products and total organic carbon during the degradation process were also determined. The quenching experiments and electron paramagnetic resonance spectra revealed that sulfate radical (SO4•-) rather than other species such as singlet oxygen (1O2) and hydroxyl radical (•OH) was primarily responsible for phenol degradation in the Co3O4/CeO2/PMS system, and a rational mechanism was proposed. The quenching experiments and electron paramagnetic resonance spectra revealed that sulfate radical (SO4•-) rather than other species such as singlet oxygen (1O2) and hydroxyl radical (•OH) was primarily responsible for phenol degradation in the Co3O4/CeO2/PMS system, and a rational mechanism was proposed. Moreover, the recycling experiments as well as low cobalt leaching concentration manifested satisfactory reusability and stability.
