  • In this work, the synthesis of zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) crystals and their subsequent application as effective sorbents for extraction and preconcentration of several benzomercaptans from environmental complex samples is described. These materials were prepared by solvothermal approach varying the concentration of n-butylamine modulator to modify the surface of the metal-organic framework. The resulting materials were characterized by scanning and transmission electron microscopy, powder X-ray diffraction and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The ZIF-8 material that gave the best features was selected as extractive phase and the influence of various parameters (sample pH and elution solvent composition, among others) on the extraction efficiency of target compounds were investigated. Under the optimal conditions of the method, the tested analytes (2-mercaptobenzothiazole, 2-mercaptobenzoxazole and 2-mercapto-6-nitrobenzothiazole) were retained and eluted quantitatively with alkaline 5050 (vv) methanol-water mixture. Using the proposed method, low limits of detection, in the range of 16-21 ng L-1 for aqueous samples and 0.4-0.5 µg kg-1 for soil samples, were achieved whereas the precision (expressed as relative standard deviation) was lower than 7%.     Pregnancy and placental reports of all pregnancies complicated by PA (clinically diagnosed) between 11/2008-12/2018 were reviewed. We compared maternal background, pregnancy outcomes, and placental histopathology between cases of PA divided into three groups according to the extent of abruption Group 1-<30 %, Group 2-30-49 %, and Group 3->50 % of placental surface. Placental lesions were classified according to the current "Amsterdam" criteria. The primary outcome was defined as a composite of severe neonatal morbidity and included ≥ 1 of the following complications seizures, intraventricular hemorrhage, hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy, periventricular leukomalacia, blood transfusion, necrotizing enterocolitis, intrauterine fetal demise, or neonatal death.

    A total of 260 PA cases were included 111 (42.7 %) in Group 1, 94 (36.2 %) in Group 2, and 55 (21.1 %) in Group 3. The rate of the primary outcome (7.2 % vs. 11.7 % vs. 27.3 %, p = 0.02) was associated with the degree of PA as well as maternal heavy smoking (p = 0.04), DIC (p = 0.03), umbilical artery Ph <7.1 (p = 0.02), 5-minute Apgar scores <7 (p = 0.03), NICU admissions, placental maternal vascular malperfusion lesions (p = 0.04), and neonatal weights <5th percentile (0.04). Based on parity, 77.4% of elephants were nulliparous, 8.2% produced one calf, and 14.3% were multiparous, with there being camp differences. We studied whether neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES) and high-protein supplementation (HPRO) in the first 2 weeks after SAH could preserve neuromotor and cognitive function as compared to standard of care (SOC) for nutrition and mobilization.

    Despite its rich vasculature, the thyroid gland is a rare site of metastatic disease. We present a systematic review of colorectal cancer (CRC) thyroid metastases, with emphasis on diagnosis, therapeutic management, and oncological outcomes.

    A systematic review of the English literature (1990 to 2019) was performed, using the PubMed, Embase, and Google Scholar bibliographic databases. For each patient, epidemiological, surgical, histopathological, and oncological data were extracted.

    A total of 111 patients (40% males, mean age 61 ± 12years) were included in the final analysis. The primary CRC was locally advanced (T3-T4) in 83%, had positive lymph nodes (N+) in 65%, and had distant metastases (M+) in 28%. Thyroid metastases were synchronous in 15% and metachronous in 80%, with a mean interval of 51 ± 31months from primary tumor treatment. Thyroid metastatic disease was diagnosed clinically (60%), radiologically (33%), biochemically (2%), or postmortem (5%). When performed, FNA biopsy was diagnostic in 73% and highly suspicious in 13%. A total of 63% of patients had additional distant metastases, usually in the liver or lungs, while 68% of patients underwent surgical excision (total or subtotal thyroidectomy 58%, lobectomy 42%) and 43% received adjuvant chemotherapy or radiotherapy. Mean overall survival after primary CRC was 55.5 ± 34.7months, with mean disease-free survival of 31.3 ± 27.2months. Following diagnosis or treatment of thyroid metastases, 1-, 2- and 3-year survival rates were 79, 66, and 60%, respectively. Mean survival following diagnosis of thyroid metastases was 11.3months.

  • To investigate the effect of subendometrial vasopressin injection in patients with abnormally invasive placenta (AIP), who underwent cesarean section and hysterectomy.

    This randomized double-blinded clinical trial was conducted on pregnant women diagnosed with AIP grade 4 and 5 by ultrasonography during cesarean section. Women were randomly divided into two equal groups including group 1 (vasopressin) and group 2 (control) who underwent 20units of vasopressin and 20cc normal saline injection, respectively. Vasopressin and placebo were injected subendometrially 1cm medial to the uterine vessels into the lower uterine segment. We investigated a novel anti-atherogenic effect of liraglutide in a real-world prospective study on patients with type 2 diabetes (T2DM).

    Sixty-two patients with T2DM (31 men, 31 women; mean age ± standard deviation 61 ± 9years) naïve to incretin-based therapies were treated with liraglutide (1.2mg/day) as add-on therapy to metformin (1500-3000mg/day) for 4months. Laboratory analyses included the assessment of lipoprotein subclass profile by gel electrophoresis (Lipoprint; Quantimetrix Corp., Redondo Beach, CA, USA). Carotid intima-media thickness (cIMT) was assessed by Doppler ultrasonography. Statistical analyses included the paired t test, Spearman correlation and multiple regression analysis.

This randomized double-blinded clinical trial was conducted on pregnant women diagnosed with AIP grade 4 and 5 by ultrasonography during cesarean section. Women were randomly divided into two equal groups including group 1 (vasopressin) and group 2 (control) who underwent 20units of vasopressin and 20cc normal saline injection, respectively. Here, we tested the hypothesis that early adolescent adversity reshapes vlPAG/DR threat-related cue activity and threat probability signaling. Female, Long Evans rats experienced a battery of adverse adolescent experiences (n = 12), while controls did not (n = 8). Single-unit activity was recorded 50 + days following the final adverse experience, when the adult rats received fear discrimination consisting of danger, uncertainty and safety cues. Despite achieving fear discrimination that was equivalent to controls, vlPAG/DR threat responding was altered in adverse-experienced rats. Early adolescent adversity resulted in a greater proportion of cue-responsive neurons. Cue-excited neurons showed greater increases in firing and cue-inhibited neurons showed greater decreases. Even more, early adversity reduced flexible, threat probability signaling by cue-excited neurons and promoted more rigid, fear output signaling by cue-inhibited neurons. The lipid composition in endosperm cells in A619 is altered, giving rise to a persistent amyloplast envelope. These changes impede the gathering of protein bodies and prevent them from interacting with starch grains, creating air spaces that cause an opaque kernel phenotype. Genetic modifiers were identified that alter the effect of Ven1A619, while maintaining a high β-carotene level. As the seed regions of miR-322 and miR-503 were complementary to the CUG repeats, we hypothesized that the CUG repeats were the target of miR-322/-503. Through expression tests, reporter assays, and colocalization staining, miR-322/-503 was proved to directly and specifically target the expanded CUG repeats in the DM1 cell model rather than the shorter ones in normal cells.   • E-cigarettes are the most popular aid to smoking cessation attempts in England and the USA. This research examined associations between e-cigarette device characteristics and patterns of use, tobacco-smoking relapse, and smoking abstinence.

    A convenience sample of 371 participants with experience of vaping, and tobacco-smoking abstinence and/or relapse completed an online cross-sectional survey about e-cigarettes. Factors associated with smoking relapse were examined using multiple linear and logistic regression models.

    Most participants were self-reported long-term abstinent smokers (86.3%) intending to continue vaping. Most initiated e-cigarette use with a vape pen (45.8%) or cig-a-like (38.7%) before moving onto a tank device (89%).     The influence of sex and gender on the risk of dementia, its clinical presentation and progression is increasingly being recognized. However, current dementia strategies have not explicitly considered sex and gender differences in the management of dementia to ensure equitable care. The objective of this study was to examine the moderating effect of sex on the quality of care following the implementation of the Quebec Alzheimer Plan (QAP).

    We conducted a secondary analysis of the evaluation of the QAP consisting of a retrospective chart review of 945 independent, randomly-selected patient charts of males and females 75+ years old with dementia and a visit to one of 13 participating Family Medicine Groups before (October 2011-July 2013) and after (October 2014 - July 2015). The quality of dementia care score, based on Canadian and international recommendations and consensus guidelines, consisted of documented assessments in 10 domains. We used a mixed linear regression model to measure the interaction betwit is unclear whether this represents inequities in access to care and health outcomes. Future research should focus on better understanding sex and gender-specific needs in dementia to bridge this gap and better inform dementia strategies.

Therefore, this study was conducted to investigate the association between animal flesh foods consumption with semen quality.

    In this cross-sectional study, 400 newly-identified (< 6 months) infertile men, as diagnosed by an andrologist, were recruited into the study. Dietary intake was assessed by using a semiquantitative Food Frequency Questionnaire. The total meat consumption was defined as the sum of red meat, poultry, fresh fish, canned fish, processed meats, and organ meats in the diet. A linear mixed model was used to assess the relationship between meat consumption and semen quality indicators of participants.

    Consumption of canned fish was inversely related to sperm immotility. Compared with the men in the lowest quartile of canned fish intake, those in the highest quartile had a lower sperm immotility [lowest quartile 52.5%; (95% CI 47-57) vs 47.4%; (95% CI 43-51) P-trend = 0.026]. Similarly, a trend toward an inverse significant association between fresh fish intake and sperm immotility was observed (P-trend = 0.074). In contrast, fresh and canned fish intake was unrelated to other outcomes of sperm quality (P-trend > 0.05). The SHANK3 gene is understood to be the critical gene for the neurological features of this syndrome.

Interestingly, the clinical and molecular findings of the two patients were identical, likely resulting from germline mosaicism in a parent. The boy-girl twins showed intellectual disability, speech absence, facial dysmorphism, cyanosis, large fleshy hands and feet, dysplastic fingernails and abnormal behaviors, and third-generation sequencing showed an identical de novo interstitial deletion of 6.0 Mb in the 22q13.31-q13.33 region.

    E-cigarettes are the most popular aid to smoking cessation attempts in England and the USA. This research examined associations between e-cigarette device characteristics and patterns of use, tobacco-smoking relapse, and smoking abstinence. A convenience sample of 371 participants with experience of vaping, and tobacco-smoking abstinence and/or relapse completed an online cross-sectional survey about e-cigarettes. Factors associated with smoking relapse were examined using multiple linear and logistic regression models. Most participants were self-reported long-term abstinent smokers (86.3%) intending to continue vaping. Most initiated e-cigarette use with a vape pen (45.8%) or cig-a-like (38.7%) before moving onto a tank device (89%). The objective of this study was to examine the moderating effect of sex on the quality of care following the implementation of the Quebec Alzheimer Plan (QAP). We conducted a secondary analysis of the evaluation of the QAP consisting of a retrospective chart review of 945 independent, randomly-selected patient charts of males and females 75+ years old with dementia and a visit to one of 13 participating Family Medicine Groups before (October 2011-July 2013) and after (October 2014 - July 2015). The quality of dementia care score, based on Canadian and international recommendations and consensus guidelines, consisted of documented assessments in 10 domains. We used a mixed linear regression model to measure the interaction betwit is unclear whether this represents inequities in access to care and health outcomes. Compared with the men in the lowest quartile of canned fish intake, those in the highest quartile had a lower sperm immotility [lowest quartile 52.5%; (95% CI 47-57) vs 47.4%; (95% CI 43-51) P-trend = 0.026]. Similarly, a trend toward an inverse significant association between fresh fish intake and sperm immotility was observed (P-trend = 0.074). We sought to characterize the venous patterns within the tentorium and their relation to measures of skull development in a cohort of healthy adults.

    We retrospectively reviewed tentorial venous anatomy of the head using CTA/CTV performed for routine care or research purposes in 238 patients. Included studies had adequate contrast opacification of venous structures and a section thickness of ≤2 mm; we excluded cases with space-occupying lesions and vascular pathologies. Tentorial angle, dural sinus configurations, and measures of skull base development were assessed as predictors of tentorial venous anatomy variation via Cramér V association, the binary encoded Pearson correlation, and nearest-point algorithm with the Euclidean distance metric for clustering.

    Tentorial vein development was related to the ringed configuration of the tentorial sinuses (

Using these cells, we examined the possible O-GlcNAcylation sites of STIM1 to determine whether the sites were O-GlcNAcylated.   • Microorganisms can cause acute infectious arthritis, chronic infectious arthritis, or reactive inflammatory arthritis. The aim of this study is to perform a narrative review of the pathophysiology, etiology, and diagnostic features of infectious arthritis and TMJ infectious arthritis.

    A search of the literature was performed using Medline, Scielo, Embase, and Google Scholar databases. The terms employed for the search were "Temporomandibular Joint Disorders" and "Infectious Arthritis"; or "Septic Arthritis"; or "Bacterial, Fungal, or Viral Arthritis." Over three hundred articles were screened for eligibility.

    The selected articles were utilized to perform a narrative review of the general aspects of infectious arthritis and infectious arthritis affecting the TMJ.

Animals were evaluated for early vascular structural changes, endothelial function, inflammation, lipid profile and oxidative stress. We used 20 male Sprague-Dawley rats divided equally into control and diabetic groups. Diabetic rats were fed an HFD for 4 weeks, injected intraperitoneally with STZ, then sacrificed at week 15. Aortic endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS), aortic superoxide dismutase (***), endothelial-dependent and independent relaxation and contraction, intima-media thickness (IMT), malondialdehyde (MDA) and tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) were measured. Histopathological characteristics also were assessed. Diabetic rats exhibited higher fasting blood glucose (FBG), low density lipoprotein, total cholesterol and triglycerides compared to the control group. Aortic endothelium-dependent relaxation due to acetylcholine (ACh) was lower, while aortic endothelium-dependent contraction due to calcium ionophore and endothelium-independent contraction due to phenylephrine (PE) were higher for the diabetic group. eNOS expression was lower in the diabetic group compared to controls. IMT and MDA levels were increased, while *** activity was decreased in the diabetic group compared to controls. TNF-α was higher in the diabetic group than for controls. Our type 2 diabetes model exhibited endothelial dysfunction associated with early vascular structural changes, dyslipidemia, increased vascular oxidative stress, and inflammation. The aim of this study is to perform a narrative review of the pathophysiology, etiology, and diagnostic features of infectious arthritis and TMJ infectious arthritis. A search of the literature was performed using Medline, Scielo, Embase, and Google Scholar databases. The terms employed for the search were "Temporomandibular Joint Disorders" and "Infectious Arthritis"; or "Septic Arthritis"; or "Bacterial, Fungal, or Viral Arthritis." Over three hundred articles were screened for eligibility. The selected articles were utilized to perform a narrative review of the general aspects of infectious arthritis and infectious arthritis affecting the TMJ. Animals were evaluated for early vascular structural changes, endothelial function, inflammation, lipid profile and oxidative stress. We used 20 male Sprague-Dawley rats divided equally into control and diabetic groups. Diabetic rats were fed an HFD for 4 weeks, injected intraperitoneally with STZ, then sacrificed at week 15. Aortic endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS), aortic superoxide dismutase (SOD), endothelial-dependent and independent relaxation and contraction, intima-media thickness (IMT), malondialdehyde (MDA) and tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) were measured. Histopathological characteristics also were assessed. Diabetic rats exhibited higher fasting blood glucose (FBG), low density lipoprotein, total cholesterol and triglycerides compared to the control group. Aortic endothelium-dependent relaxation due to acetylcholine (ACh) was lower, while aortic endothelium-dependent contraction due to calcium ionophore and endothelium-independent contraction due to phenylephrine (PE) were higher for the diabetic group. eNOS expression was lower in the diabetic group compared to controls. IMT and MDA levels were increased, while SOD activity was decreased in the diabetic group compared to controls. TNF-α was higher in the diabetic group than for controls. Our type 2 diabetes model exhibited endothelial dysfunction associated with early vascular structural changes, dyslipidemia, increased vascular oxidative stress, and inflammation.   • The aim of this study was to evaluate the outcome of esophageal atresia in Germany in a retrospective observational study of a large cohort. Data from the major health insurance company in Germany, which covers approximately 30% of German patients, were analyzed. All patients born and registered between 2009 and 2013 with a diagnosis of esophageal atresia at first admission to the hospital were included. Mortality was analyzed during the first year of life. We identified 287 patients with esophageal atresia, including 253 with and 34 without tracheoesophageal fistula. Associated anomalies were found in 53.7% of the patients; the most frequent were cardiac anomalies (41.8%), anomalies of the urinary tract (17.4%), and atresia of the colon, rectum, and anus (9.4%). Forty-one patients (14.3%) had a birth weight less then 1500 g. Seventeen patients (5.9%) died before surgery. Gastrostomy was performed during the index admission in 70 patients (25.9%). The reconstruction of the esophageal passage was performed in 247 patients (93.9%). Forty-eight percent of the patients who underwent an operation required dilatation. The mortality rate in the patients who underwent an operation was 10.4%. These results from Germany correspond to the international results that have been reported. The number of dilatations was in the middle of the range of those reported in the literature; the overall mortality rate was in the upper portion of the range of the international rates. Efforts should be made to establish a clinical registry to measure and improve the quality of care for this and other rare conditions.
    The purpose of this study was to evaluate the financial performance and reimbursement of chronic care management (CCM) provided by clinical pharmacists in a primary care setting using Current Procedural Terminology codes that were added to the Medicare Physician Fee Schedule in 2017.

    A retrospective study assessing financial performance of pharmacist-led CCM was conducted for the 12-month period from May 1, 2018, through April 30, 2019, at an academic multiclinic medical practice. Pharmacist-led CCM encounters included a combination of telephone and in-clinic visits. Return on investment, a ratio of net income to financial investment, was the primary outcome. Secondary outcomes included the number of CCM encounters, time spent by pharmacists delivering CCM (ie, "time-on-task"), and third-party claim reimbursement.

    Sixty-five patients were enrolled in CCM during the 12-month study period. Pharmacists provided 236 CCM encounters, including 31 enrollment visits and 102 hours of clinical time-on-task. Gross revenue for CCM during the 12-month period was $7,433.91, and expenses totaled $6,430.36, resulting in a 15.6% return on investment. Out of 158 CCM claims, 131 (83%) were paid and 27 (17%) were unpaid or remained in adjudication at study completion.

    Pharmacist-led CCM resulted in a modest positive return on investment compared to other reimbursable pharmacy services. Practitioners should evaluate opportunities to synergize CCM with other fee-for-service and quality-based reimbursement programs.

    When monitoring heparin, anti-Xa assays are susceptible to interference from apixaban taken before admission and can result in inappropriate dose adjustments that can negatively affect patient care.

    We derived a novel assay, termed corrected heparin (CH), using quantified values from a chromogenic anti-Xa assay with heparin calibrators before and after heparinase treatment to eliminate any interference from apixaban within the patient sample. We retrospectively assessed 469 specimens from 72 patients at our institution who had their unfractionated heparin infusion monitored using the CH assay because of known apixaban use. These patients were included in the study if they had detectable apixaban levels (>0.1 IU/mL by anti-Xa).

    The analytical performance of the assay was evaluated, and precision was found to be 8.8% within 1 day and 13.3% over multiple days, with acceptable linearity (R2 = 0.997). Evaluation of clinical performance was compared with the partial thromboplastin time (PTT), showing a lack of correlation similar to comparisons between the PTT and anti-Xa assay (Blood Coagul Fibrinolysis 1993;4635-8). The mean time to a therapeutic result in this cohort was 10 hours and 10 minutes. The CH assay was used to determine how long the apixaban was detected by the anti-Xa assay. The majority of patients (80%) still had measurable anti-Xa assay interference from apixaban at 24 hours after the last apixaban dose.

In our study, the majority of children had peripheral neuropathy due to acquired causes, mostly due to diabetes mellitus; roughly one in five of the patients had hereditary neuropathy. Almost half of the patients had motor deficits, which were more prevalent in toxic and inflammatory neuropathies. A little less than a third of patients complained of pain as well as presenting with autonomic dysfunction symptoms. Application of negative periocular pressure was set at 50% of baseline intraocular pressure for each study eye.

    Following 2h of negative periocular pressure application, the difference in MagnitudeD (MagD) from baseline for eyes randomized to receive negative periocular pressure (+ 0.17 versus  - 0.26) was statistically significant (p = 0.023).     Sepsis has high incidence and mortality rates, particularly in the intensive care unit (ICU). Corticosteroids may improve outcomes, and vitamin C may add benefit. We aimed to assess whether vitamin C and corticosteroids improved outcomes compared with corticosteroids alone.

    This historical cohort study (11 December 2016 to 21 February 2018) was conducted in the ICU of a quaternary referral hospital. Patients with an ICU admission diagnosis of sepsis or septic shock who received vitamin C and hydrocortisone within 72 hr were compared with those who received only hydrocortisone. All patients received standard sepsis care including source control, antibiotics, and fluid resuscitation. Most patients received thiamine as standard ICU care. The primary outcome was hospital mortality. Secondary outcomes included ICU mortality, ventilator-free days, vasopressor-free days, dialysis use, and duration of ICU admission.

    One hundred and forty-four patients were included in the study. The mean (standard deviation [SD]) age was 64 (15) yr; 39% were female; and the mean (SD) Acute Physiology And Chronic Health Evaluation IV score was 89 (30). Eighty-eight patients did not receive vitamin C and 52 received vitamin C. Following 2h of negative periocular pressure application, the difference in MagnitudeD (MagD) from baseline for eyes randomized to receive negative periocular pressure (+ 0.17 versus  - 0.26) was statistically significant (p = 0.023). Over the same period, the change in MagD/Magnitude (MagD/Mag ratio) from baseline for eyes randomized to receive negative periocular pressure was also higher (+ 0.14 versus  - 0.16), compared to the control eyes, approached significance (p = 0.059). Sepsis has high incidence and mortality rates, particularly in the intensive care unit (ICU). Corticosteroids may improve outcomes, and vitamin C may add benefit. We aimed to assess whether vitamin C and corticosteroids improved outcomes compared with corticosteroids alone. This historical cohort study (11 December 2016 to 21 February 2018) was conducted in the ICU of a quaternary referral hospital. Patients with an ICU admission diagnosis of sepsis or septic shock who received vitamin C and hydrocortisone within 72 hr were compared with those who received only hydrocortisone. All patients received standard sepsis care including source control, antibiotics, and fluid resuscitation. Most patients received thiamine as standard ICU care. The primary outcome was hospital mortality. Secondary outcomes included ICU mortality, ventilator-free days, vasopressor-free days, dialysis use, and duration of ICU admission. One hundred and forty-four patients were included in the study. The mean (standard deviation [SD]) age was 64 (15) yr; 39% were female; and the mean (SD) Acute Physiology And Chronic Health Evaluation IV score was 89 (30). Eighty-eight patients did not receive vitamin C and 52 received vitamin C. There was no observed difference in hospital mortality between the non-vitamin C (36%) and vitamin C (39%) groups (adjusted odds ratio for hospital death, 0.52; 95% confidence interval, 0.20 to 1.34; P = 0.18). There were no statistically significant differences in any secondary outcomes. In this small observational study of ICU patients with septic shock, the addition of vitamin C to hydrocortisone therapy did significantly affect hospital mortality or other measures of mortality or organ dysfunction.
