    Slipped capital femoral epiphysis (SCFE) is a condition commonly affecting adolescents. It is scarcely reported in children under ten years of age, but it can be debilitating when misdiagnosed. Our purpose was to report the incidence and treatment methods of SCFE that were applied in our institution in children under the age of ten.

    We retrospectively reviewed the records of patients with SCFE treated between 2007-2018 and excluded those older than ten years old. During the study period, 46 patients (49 hips) were diagnosed with SCFE, of whom nine patients (11 hips) were children younger than ten years old. The mean age at presentation was 8.25 years. The classification was made according to the Southwick slip angle and stability of the slip. Comorbidities and body mass index (BMI) were registered. There were nine milds, one moderate, and one severe slip. All but one case were stable. All the children were above the 97
    percentile BMI for age. Three patients suffered from metabolic disease.

  • This was a prospective cross-sectional study.

    The aim was to describe the effect of patient positioning, from supine to lateral decubitus position, on the width of the L5/S1 anterior disk space defined by the great vessels.

    The application of the lateral decubitus position interbody fusion has been rapidly increasing; however, there are concerns regarding the access to the lumbosacral region due to the great vessels, which necessitates further morphometric data.

    A total of 20 consecutive live patients awaiting lumbar surgery were subjected to two magnetic resonance imaging scans on the same day in both supine and lateral decubitus positions at a single center to investigate the anterior L5/S1 disk space.

    The bare anterior L5/S1 disk window was present in all patients of this study population, and the mean width was 27 mm in the supine and 22 mm in the lateral decubitus position, with a mean reduction of 5.2 mm between the positions. The oblique corridor angle was measured at a mean of 33°.

    Pulmonary veno-occlusive disease (PVOD) is a rare form of pulmonary hypertension. It is often underdiagnosed or misdiagnosed as idiopathic pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH). Antibiotics and diuretics treatments did not induce any improvement.   • Human activities have greatly altered terrestrial carbon (C) dynamics associated with vegetation cover and land use changes, thereby influencing the C sink in downstream ecosystems. However, the transport and preservation of organic C from soils that experience serious erosion in the karst area are scarce, particularly at catchment scales. In this study, chemical characteristics of organic matter (OM) isolated from the topsoil, overlying water, and lake sediments, as well as subsequent source identification, were inferred from the molecular, spectroscopic, and carbon isotopic (δ13C) signatures in a typical karst catchment, Southwestern China. The results indicated that the elemental compositions of the calcareous soil and paddy soil significantly differed from the yellow soil. High similarities existed in the fluorescence spectra of humic substances (HS) extracted from the front two soil types with those of lake sediments, indicating the homogeneous nature of OM molecular structure. The C/N ratios of six dissolved OM fractions and sedimentary HS along with δ13C values consistently reflected the primary terrestrial source. It was estimated to account for 60% of total organic C in sedimentary OM by end-member mixing modeling in accordance with soil erosion intensity and large recharge coefficient of this catchment. The evolution of soil loss and lake productivity can be well deduced from sediment records of organic C content, C/N ratio, and the specific information of HS. This research highlighted that the composition, source, and fate of OM in the karst lake was mainly dominated by the terrestrial C flux, rather than in-lake production. The results indicated that strain CHL1 greatly accelerated the degradation of metsulfuron-methyl and tribenuron-methyl in soils. The degradation rates in the treatments inoculated with strain CHL1were all more than 91% after 7 days, significantly higher than the 25-36% degradation measured in non-inoculated treatments.
    Human activities have greatly altered terrestrial carbon (C) dynamics associated with vegetation cover and land use changes, thereby influencing the C sink in downstream ecosystems. However, the transport and preservation of organic C from soils that experience serious erosion in the karst area are scarce, particularly at catchment scales. In this study, chemical characteristics of organic matter (OM) isolated from the topsoil, overlying water, and lake sediments, as well as subsequent source identification, were inferred from the molecular, spectroscopic, and carbon isotopic (δ13C) signatures in a typical karst catchment, Southwestern China. The results indicated that the elemental compositions of the calcareous soil and paddy soil significantly differed from the yellow soil. High similarities existed in the fluorescence spectra of humic substances (HS) extracted from the front two soil types with those of lake sediments, indicating the homogeneous nature of OM molecular structure. The C/N ratios of six dissolved OM fractions and sedimentary HS along with δ13C values consistently reflected the primary terrestrial source. It was estimated to account for 60% of total organic C in sedimentary OM by end-member mixing modeling in accordance with soil erosion intensity and large recharge coefficient of this catchment. The evolution of soil loss and lake productivity can be well deduced from sediment records of organic C content, C/N ratio, and the specific information of HS. This research highlighted that the composition, source, and fate of OM in the karst lake was mainly dominated by the terrestrial C flux, rather than in-lake production.   • Real-world practice patterns and clinical outcomes in patients with follicular lymphoma (FL), including the adoption of maintenance rituximab (MR) therapy in the United States (US), have been reported in few studies since the release of the National LymphoCare Study almost a decade ago. We analyzed data from the largest integrated healthcare system in the United States, the Veterans Health Administration (VHA), to identify rates of adoption and effectiveness of MR in FL patients after first-line (1L) treatment. We identified previously untreated patients with FL in the VHA between 2006 and 2014 who achieved at least stable disease after chemoimmunotherapy or immunotherapy. Among these patients, those who initiated MR within 238 days of 1L composed the MR group, whereas those who did not were classified as the non-MR group. We examined the effect of MR on progression-free survival (PFS) and overall survival (OS).     The mental health consequences of COVID-19 are predicted to have a disproportionate impact on certain groups. We aimed to develop a brief measure, the Pandemic Anxiety Scale, to capture the specific aspects of the pandemic that are provoking anxiety, and explore how these vary by health and demographic factors.

    Data were from a convenience sample of parents (N=4,793) and adolescents (N=698) recruited in the first 6weeks of lockdown.

    Factor analytic and IRT methods were used to validate the new measure in both parent and adolescent samples. Associations between scores on the new measure and age, gender, household income, and physical health status were explored using structural equation modelling (SEM).

    Two factors were identified in both samples disease anxiety (e.g., catching, transmitting the virus) and consequence anxiety (e.g., impact on economic prospects); and unique associations with health and demographic factors were observed.

    Anxieties due to the COVID-19 are multifaceted, and the PAS is a short, reliable, and valid measure of these concerns. These anxieties are differentially associated with demographic, social, and health factors, which should be considered when developing strategies to mitigate the mental health impact of the pandemic.

    The present study aimed to evaluate anatomical variations of the right hepatic artery (RHA) in patients with congenital biliary dilatation (CBD) and the appropriate approach in laparoscopic surgery for CBD.

    The medical records of 36 patients who underwent laparoscopic or open surgery for CBD from 1996 to 2018 were retrospectively reviewed. Radiological evaluation of the origin and course of the RHA in these 36 patients were compared with 195 control patients without CBD.

    The incidence of the RHA crossing anterior to the common hepatic duct (CHD) was significantly higher in patients with CBD than in those without CBD (33% versus 10%, P=.0001). There was no intraoperative injury of the RHA, irrespective of the course of the RHA. The CHD was divided at the caudal side of the RHA in 11 of 12 patients (92%) with the anterior type of RHA, and in 13 of 24 patients (54%) with the posterior type of RHA (P=.03).

  • During baseball pitching, a high amount of elbow varus torque in the arm cocking-to-acceleration phase is thought to be a biomechanical risk factor for medial elbow pain and injury. The biomechanics of the stride phase may provide preparation for the arm cocking-to-acceleration phase that follows it.

    To determine the kinematic parameters that predict peak elbow varus torque during the stride phase of pitching.

    Participants were 107 high school baseball pitchers (age range, 15-18 years) without shoulder or elbow problems. Whole-body kinematics and kinetics during fastball pitching were analyzed using 3-dimensional measurements from 36 retroreflective markers. A total of 26 kinematic parameters of the upper and lower limbs during the stride phase leading up to the stride foot contact were extracted for multiple regression analysis to assess their combined effect on the magnitude of peak elbow varus torque.

    Increased wrist extension, elbow pronation, knee flexion on the leased peak elbow varus torque is expected to reduce the risk of elbow medial pain and injury.Reversible cutaneous hyperpigmentation often occurs in the setting of nutritional deficiencies and protein energy malnourishment, with atypical presentations arising from autoimmune disease. Here, we present a 52-year-old female with hypertension, type 1 diabetes, and Hashimoto's thyroiditis, under the diagnosis of polyglandular autoimmune syndrome type II, referred for evaluation of asymptomatic hyperpigmentation of the palms, soles, hard palate, and tongue for 6 months. The patient underwent a significant work-up, including esophagogastroduodenoscopy, which revealed hypertrophic gastropathy as well as evidence of acquired B12 deficiency secondary to pernicious anemia. The patient was initiated on B12 supplementation, with eventual resolution of mucocutaneous findings.
    Currently, 6-month oxaliplatin-based chemotherapy has been recommended as the preferred adjuvant treatment against high-risk stage 2 and stage 3 colon cancer patients.

    Record retrieval was conducted in PubMed, Web of Science, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, American Society of Clinical Oncology and European Society for Medical Oncology meeting libraries from inception to November 2019. Regarding survival and tolerability, randomized controlled trials comparing different adjuvant systemic regimens against high-risk stage 2 and stage 3 colon cancer were eligible. Disease-free survival was primary endpoint. Network calculation was based on a random-effects model, and relative ranking of each node was numerically indicated by
    score.

    A total of 30 trials were included, corresponding to 54,109 patients. Regarding disease-free survival, none of the analyzed regimens displayed significant superiority against common comparator 6-month capecitabine plus oxaliplatin (XELOX), while 12-month [netw non-Asian countries.
    The 3-month XELOX treatment could be an alternative option of the 6-month regimen among low-risk stage 3 patients. Among high-risk stage 3 patients, 6-month oxaliplatin-based regimens still seem more competitive. In addition, clinical application of 12-month capecitabine monotherapy should be cautious, despite its top rankings, especially among non-Asian countries.
    Obesity is a risk factor for mood disorder (such as depression and anxiety). We aimed to assess application of A Body Shape Index (ABSI) and abdominal volume index (AVI), as new indices of obesity to evaluate the relationship between obesity and depression/anxiety.

    This cross sectional study was conducted on 307 overweight and obese women (249 females, 58 males) 20-60 years in Iran in 2017-2018. The anthropometric measures including weight, waist circumference, hip circumference, body fat and derived values of body mass index, waist-hip ratio, AVI and ABSI were evaluated. HADS questionnaire for depression and anxiety completed.

    Prevalence of depression was 36.1% in women; men 24.1%; overweight 28.1%; obese 36.5 % and central obesity 33.7%.   • A quasi-linear viscoelastic model combining a first-order exponential with a 1-term Prony series characterized the loading and relaxation responses respectively. The effect of tissue type (grey matter vs. white matter), direction (axial vs. transverse), and their interaction were evaluated with a two-way ANOVA (p less then 0.05) with peak stress, aggregate modulus, and relaxation time as dependent variables. This study found grey matter to be 1.6-2 times stiffer than white matter and both grey and white matter were isotropic in compression.     Sessile drops on parafilm and containing polyelectrolyte complex and copper chlorophyllin or Brilliant Sulfaflavine, an anionic water-soluble dye, were dried to form deposits that were physical models for crop spray drop deposits on hydrophobic leaf surfaces. Larger buffer drops were placed on the dried deposits and the release of copper chlorophyllin or the dye were measured.

    Copper chlorophyllin showed some immediate (burst) release upon exposure to buffer whereas the remainder was immobilized on the parafilm. Herein, we report cobalt phosphide-draped N-doped carbon/graphene hybrid (CoP-NPC/GS) synthesized from ZIF-67 precursor via a single-step in-situ carbonization and phosphidation. The CoP-NPC/GS hybrid performed as a promising positive electrode with superior electrochemical performance - high capacitance (165 F g-1 at 7 A g-1 compared to 97 F g-1 for CoP-NPC), enhanced rate capability, and promoted cycling stability (~88% after 10,000 cycles). Excellent performance of the CoP-NPC/GS was derived from scanty graphene (2 wt%)-driven compositional variation, which promotes the redox-active CoP phase and higher nitrogen content offering enhanced electronic conductivity. Besides, CoP-NPC/GS performed well as a negative electrode, derived from double-layer capacitance of porous carbon, realizing a capacitance of ~71 F g-1 at 1 A g-1 but inferior to CoP-NPC, which was regulated by pyridinic nitrogen-induced pseudocapacitance. A fabricated CoP-NPC/GS||CoP-NPC asymmetric device displayed an energy density of 10 Wh Kg-1 at 700 W kg-1, with excellent cyclability (~100%) till 11,000 cycles. In this communication, a high temperature multi-composite reactor (HTMcR) process was successfully developed to recrystallize monodisperse scintillating particulates by employing a core-multishell architecture. The core-shell morphology of the particles consisted of a silica core over-coated with a rare earth (Re = Y3+, Lu3+, Ce3+) oxide shell. This core-shell assembly was then encapsulated within a poly(divinylbenzene) shell which was converted to glassy carbon during the annealing & crystallization of the silica/rare earth oxide core-shell particle. This glassy carbon acted as a delamination layer and prevented the irreversible aggregation of the particles during the high temperature crystallization step. A subsequent low temperature annealing step in an air environment removed the glassy carbon and resulted in radioluminescent nanoparticles. Two monodisperse nanoparticle systems were synthesized using the HTMcR process including cerium doped Y2Si2O7 and Lu2Si2O7 with radioluminescence peaks at 427 and 399 nm, respectively.     A quasi-linear viscoelastic model combining a first-order exponential with a 1-term Prony series characterized the loading and relaxation responses respectively. The effect of tissue type (grey matter vs. white matter), direction (axial vs. transverse), and their interaction were evaluated with a two-way ANOVA (p less then 0.05) with peak stress, aggregate modulus, and relaxation time as dependent variables. This study found grey matter to be 1.6-2 times stiffer than white matter and both grey and white matter were isotropic in compression. Polyelectrolyte complexes formed between anionic carboxymethyl cellulose and cationic polyamidoamine-epichlorohydrin can prevent the release of copper chlorophyllin from dried spray deposits on leaf surfaces when exposed to water. Sessile drops on parafilm and containing polyelectrolyte complex and copper chlorophyllin or Brilliant Sulfaflavine, an anionic water-soluble dye, were dried to form deposits that were physical models for crop spray drop deposits on hydrophobic leaf surfaces. Larger buffer drops were placed on the dried deposits and the release of copper chlorophyllin or the dye were measured. Copper chlorophyllin showed some immediate (burst) release upon exposure to buffer whereas the remainder was immobilized on the parafilm. Herein, we report cobalt phosphide-draped N-doped carbon/graphene hybrid (CoP-NPC/GS) synthesized from ZIF-67 precursor via a single-step in-situ carbonization and phosphidation. The CoP-NPC/GS hybrid performed as a promising positive electrode with superior electrochemical performance - high capacitance (165 F g-1 at 7 A g-1 compared to 97 F g-1 for CoP-NPC), enhanced rate capability, and promoted cycling stability (~88% after 10,000 cycles). Excellent performance of the CoP-NPC/GS was derived from scanty graphene (2 wt%)-driven compositional variation, which promotes the redox-active CoP phase and higher nitrogen content offering enhanced electronic conductivity. Besides, CoP-NPC/GS performed well as a negative electrode, derived from double-layer capacitance of porous carbon, realizing a capacitance of ~71 F g-1 at 1 A g-1 but inferior to CoP-NPC, which was regulated by pyridinic nitrogen-induced pseudocapacitance. A fabricated CoP-NPC/GS||CoP-NPC asymmetric device displayed an energy density of 10 Wh Kg-1 at 700 W kg-1, with excellent cyclability (~100%) till 11,000 cycles. In this communication, a high temperature multi-composite reactor (HTMcR) process was successfully developed to recrystallize monodisperse scintillating particulates by employing a core-multishell architecture. The core-shell morphology of the particles consisted of a silica core over-coated with a rare earth (Re = Y3+, Lu3+, Ce3+) oxide shell. This core-shell assembly was then encapsulated within a poly(divinylbenzene) shell which was converted to glassy carbon during the annealing & crystallization of the silica/rare earth oxide core-shell particle. This glassy carbon acted as a delamination layer and prevented the irreversible aggregation of the particles during the high temperature crystallization step. A subsequent low temperature annealing step in an air environment removed the glassy carbon and resulted in radioluminescent nanoparticles. Two monodisperse nanoparticle systems were synthesized using the HTMcR process including cerium doped Y2Si2O7 and Lu2Si2O7 with radioluminescence peaks at 427 and 399 nm, respectively.   • One prominent effect of nutrient pollution of surface waters is the mass invasion of floating plants, which can clog waterways, disrupting human use of aquatic systems. These plants are widely vilified and motivate expensive control campaigns, but their presence may be providing a poorly recognized function in the cycling of excess nutrients. The capacity for floating plants to absorb nutrients from surface water has been understood for decades, primarily from their use in constructed wetlands for wastewater treatment. Yet, in natural settings, there has not been to date any effort to quantify whether floating plant invasions represent important pools or fluxes of nutrients relative to those of the river catchments in which they occur. We found that seasonal hydrologic cycles in the Zambezi trap and flush floating plants from river choke points, such as dams and river confluences, on an annual basis. Peak plant biomass at such choke points constitutes a proxy for estimating annual plant-bound nutrient loads. We assessed the significance of floating vegetation as nutrient sinks by comparing annual plant-bound nutrient loading to conventional river nutrient loading (dissolved and particulate) for four tributaries of the Zambezi River in Zambia. We show that a previously reported unusually high insectivore abundance was explained by large amounts of chironomids-highly enriched in δ15N-that feed on seabird residues as larvae along rocky shores to eventually emerge as flying adults. Benthic ammonium and phosphate fluxes were up to 163% and 153% higher close to the colony (1,300 m distance) than further away (2,700 m) and the estimated nutrient release from the seabirds at were in the same order of magnitude as the loads from the largest waste-water treatment plants in the region. The trophic cascade impacting insectivorous passerines and the substantial redistribution of nutrients suggest that seabird nutrient transfer should be increasingly considered in local conservation plans and regional nutrient cycling models.Biofilm colonisation of surfaces is of critical importance in various areas ranging from indwelling medical devices to industrial setups. Of particular importance is the reduced susceptibility of bacteria embedded in a biofilm to existing antimicrobial agents. In this paper, we demonstrate that remotely actuated magnetic cantilevers grafted on a substrate act efficiently in preventing bacterial biofilm formation. When exposed to an alternating magnetic field, the flexible magnetic cantilevers vertically deflect from their initial position periodically, with an extremely low frequency (0.16 Hz). The cantilevers' beating prevents the initial stage of bacterial adhesion to the substrate surface and the subsequent biofilm growth. Our experimental data on E. coli liquid cultures demonstrate up to a 70% reduction in biofilm formation. A theoretical model has been developed to predict the amplitude of the cantilevers vertical deflection. Our results demonstrate proof-of-concept for a device that can magneto-mechanically prevent the first stage in bacterial biofilm formation, acting as on-demand fouling release active surfaces.Streptococcus pneumoniae choline kinase (sChoK) has previously been proposed as a drug target, yet the effectiveness of the first and only known inhibitor of sChoK, HC-3, is in the millimolar range. The aim of this study was thus to further validate sChoK as a potential therapeutic target by discovering more powerful sChoK inhibitors. LDH/PK and colorimetric enzymatic assays revealed two promising sChoK inhibitor leads RSM-932A and MN58b that were discovered with IC50 of 0.5 and 150 μM, respectively, and were shown to be 2-4 magnitudes more potent than the previously discovered inhibitor HC-3. Culture assays showed that the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of RSM-932A and MN58b for S. pneumoniae was 0.4 μM and 10 μM, respectively, and the minimum lethal concentration (MLC) was 1.6 μM and 20 μM, respectively. Western blot monitoring of teichoic acid production revealed differential patterns in response to each inhibitor. In addition, both inhibitors possessed a bacteriostatic mechanism of action, and neither interfered with the autolytic effects of vancomycin. Cells treated with MN58b but not RSM-932A were more sensitive to a phosphate induced autolysis with respect to the untreated cells. SEM studies revealed that MN58b distorted the cell wall, a result consistent with the apparent teichoic acid changes. Two novel and more highly potent putative inhibitors of sChoK, MN58b and RSM-932A, were characterized in this study. However, the effects of sChoK inhibitors can vary at the cellular level. sChoK inhibition is a promising avenue to follow in the development of therapeutics for treatment of S. pneumoniae.
    To assess Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) admissions for hypoglycemia after the introduction of the Baby Friendly Hospital Initiative (BFHI), followed by implementation of American Academy of Pediatrics recommended hypoglycemia guidelines.

    Retrospective review of NICU admissions for hypoglycemia. Eligible subjects were healthy infants >35 weeks gestation transferred to a NICU for hypoglycemia. Infants admitted with other pathologies were excluded. NICU admissions from 3 different 18-month epochs (1 = pre-BFHI; 2 = post-BFHI; 3 = post-BFHI+hypoglycemia guidelines) were compared.

    After implementation of BFHI there was a statistically significant increase in admissions for hypoglycemia (Epoch 2 = 1.23% vs Epoch 1 = 0.55%, p < 0.001). Followed by a decrease in admissions after the implementation of hypoglycemia guidelines (Epoch 2 = 1.23% vs Epoch 3 = 0.76%, p = 0.03).

    Spinal epidural arteriovenous fistulas (SEDAVFs) are a rare entity that cause gradual progression of neurological dysfunction. We present a case of SEDAVF with acute exacerbation of paraplegia that was successfully treated with emergency transarterial embolization.

    A 73-year-old man presented with low **** pain, numbness in the lower extremities, and gait disturbance. T2-weighted magnetic resonance imaging revealed edema of the thoracolumbar spinal cord. Computed tomography angiography showed that the SEDAVF was fed by an expanded left L1 artery, epidural venous plexus at the left L1-2 intervertebral foramen, and intradural venous drainage. The patient suddenly developed severe paraplegia 2 days later. We performed emergency spinal angiography followed by transarterial embolization. The postoperative course was uneventful, and his preoperative symptoms improved.

    Surgical intervention for chronic subdural hematoma (cSDH) in the elderly population remains a clinical challenge given that associated morbidity and outcomes do not always equate radiographic success with clinical success. Our objective was to compare outcome measures of 2 age groups of patients undergoing surgical intervention for cSDH evacuation and to perform a systematic review of the literature related to this topic.

    A retrospective analysis of adult patients undergoing surgical evacuation of cSDH at our institution was performed. Primary outcome measures of modified Rankin Scale (mRS) score at discharge and 3 months were assessed. In addition, a systematic search was performed to collect all relevant studies addressing outcomes after surgical intervention in aged patients with cSDH.

    There were 72 patients in the younger cohort (<70 years) and 113 patients in the aged cohort (≥70 years). Multivariate analysis showed significant association between age and higher mRS score at discharge and 3 monow-up are warranted to further study outcomes in this increasing population.
    Global neurosurgery is the practice of neurosurgery with the primary purpose of delivering timely, safe, and affordable neurosurgical care to all who need it. The aim of this study is to identify the most frequently cited articles in global neurosurgery through a bibliographic review to characterize articles and trends around this growing topic.

    The top most-cited articles in global neurosurgery were determined by searching the Web of Science database using a priori search terms. Articles with at least 5 citations were selected, and there were no time period or language restrictions. The data were extracted from each included article and all characteristics were summarized.

    A total of 932 articles were identified using the search terms; 69 articles fulfilled inclusion criteria and 17 articles were selected that had more than 5 citations. The articles' number of citations ranged from 6 to 98 for the most-cited article. Authors from, or affiliated with, 14 countries contributed to the 17 articles, and the country that had the greatest representation was the United States. The main topic discussed was surgical capacity, the second topic was the treatment of different neurosurgical conditions, and volunteerism was the third topic.

    Transthyretin cardiac amyloidosis (ATTR-CA) is an under-recognized cause of heart failure with preserved ejection fraction. In the United States, the valine-to-isoleucine substitution (Val122Ile) is the most common inherited variant. Data on sex differences in presentation and outcomes of Val122Ile associated ATTR-CA are lacking.

    In a retrospective, single-center study of 73 patients diagnosed with Val122Ile associated ATTR-CA between 2001 and 2018, sex differences in clinical and echocardiographic data at the time of diagnosis were evaluated. Pressure-volume analysis using noninvasive single beat techniques was used to compare chamber performance. Spinal epidural arteriovenous fistulas (SEDAVFs) are a rare entity that cause gradual progression of neurological dysfunction. We present a case of SEDAVF with acute exacerbation of paraplegia that was successfully treated with emergency transarterial embolization. A 73-year-old man presented with low back pain, numbness in the lower extremities, and gait disturbance. T2-weighted magnetic resonance imaging revealed edema of the thoracolumbar spinal cord. Computed tomography angiography showed that the SEDAVF was fed by an expanded left L1 artery, epidural venous plexus at the left L1-2 intervertebral foramen, and intradural venous drainage. The patient suddenly developed severe paraplegia 2 days later. We performed emergency spinal angiography followed by transarterial embolization. The postoperative course was uneventful, and his preoperative symptoms improved. Surgical intervention for chronic subdural hematoma (cSDH) in the elderly population remains a clinical challenge given that associated morbidity and outcomes do not always equate radiographic success with clinical success. Our objective was to compare outcome measures of 2 age groups of patients undergoing surgical intervention for cSDH evacuation and to perform a systematic review of the literature related to this topic. A retrospective analysis of adult patients undergoing surgical evacuation of cSDH at our institution was performed. The top most-cited articles in global neurosurgery were determined by searching the Web of Science database using a priori search terms. Articles with at least 5 citations were selected, and there were no time period or language restrictions. The data were extracted from each included article and all characteristics were summarized. A total of 932 articles were identified using the search terms; 69 articles fulfilled inclusion criteria and 17 articles were selected that had more than 5 citations. The articles' number of citations ranged from 6 to 98 for the most-cited article. Authors from, or affiliated with, 14 countries contributed to the 17 articles, and the country that had the greatest representation was the United States. The main topic discussed was surgical capacity, the second topic was the treatment of different neurosurgical conditions, and volunteerism was the third topic. In the United States, the valine-to-isoleucine substitution (Val122Ile) is the most common inherited variant. Data on sex differences in presentation and outcomes of Val122Ile associated ATTR-CA are lacking. In a retrospective, single-center study of 73 patients diagnosed with Val122Ile associated ATTR-CA between 2001 and 2018, sex differences in clinical and echocardiographic data at the time of diagnosis were evaluated. Pressure-volume analysis using noninvasive single beat techniques was used to compare chamber performance. Compared with men (n = 46), women (n = 27) were significantly older at diagnosis, 76 years vs 69 years; P < .001.
