  • The use of phytoremediation was an efficient strategy for the restoration of mine **** and the addition of modifier was favorable for improving the phytoremediation efficiency. Herein, spent mushroom compost (SMC) was added in manganese (Mn) **** to reveal the phytoremediation potential of Paulownia fortunei seedlings. The transportation, subcellular distribution and chemical forms of Mn in P. fortunei, the diurnal variation of photosynthesis and antioxidant enzyme activities in P. fortunei leaves were measured to reveal the effect of SMC (mass ratios of 10%, M+) on the phytoremediation of Mn ****. Results showed that the addition of SMC increased the accumulation content of Mn by 408.54% due to the increased biomass of P. fortunei seedlings. After SMC amendment, the maximum net photosynthetic rate (Pn) increased and the superoxide dismutase (***) activities decreased significantly (p  less then  0.05), which was beneficial to the tolerance of leaves to Mn stress. SMC amendment maintained the cell structural integrity of P. fortunei seedlings observed by transmission electron microscope (TEM). Additionally, SMC amendment decreased the damage level of Mn to the cell of P. fortunei seedlings by using function groups (-CH3 and -COOH) to bond Mn in the cell walls and vacuoles. SMC amendment reduced the Mn toxicity to P. fortunei seedlings and improved the phytoremediation capacity. Biochar is a promising material for improving soil quality, alleviating aluminum and acidic toxicity. The present study was conducted on maize to evaluate the effects of biochar on NUE and soil quality under different applications of nitrogen fertilizer. Biochar was used in the following five levels in each pot; C0 (0 g), C1 (7.5 g), C2 (15 g), C3 (30 g), C4 (45 g), in combination with δ15N at two N levels N0 (0 g kg-1) and N1 (0.2 g kg-1). The biochar increased soil nutrients, exchangeable cation, and SOM. The use of biochar with N fertilizer showed a more positive effect on improving NUE of maize and facilitating soil quality. Our results suggest that biochar could be used to improve soil available nutrients, alleviate aluminum toxicity and acidic toxicity. Therefore, biochar could also increase the NUE of maize by adjusting soil quality. On two rat cell lines, pheochromocytoma PC12 and ascites hepatoma AS-30D, and on rat liver mitochondria we studied action of paxilline (lipophilic mycotoxin from fungus Penicillium paxilli which is blocker of large-conductance potassium channels) against harmful effects of Cd(II) - one of the most dangerous toxic metals and environmental pollutants. We investigated an influence of paxilline on cell viability and mitochondrial function in the presence and in the absence of Cd2+. As found, paxilline protected partially from the Cd2+-induced cytotoxicity, namely taken in concentration of 1 μM it decreased the Cd2+-induced cell necrosis in average by 10-14 or 13-23% for AS-30D and PC12 cells, respectively. Nevertheless, paxilline did not affect the Cd2+-induced apoptosis of AS-30D cells. The alleviating concentration of paxilline reduced an intracellular production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in PC12 cells intoxicated by Cd2+ and enhanced the ROS production in control AS-30D cells; however, it weakly affected mitochondrial membrane potential of the cells in the absence and in the presence of Cd2+. The ameliorative concentration of paxilline decreased the maximal respiration rates of control cells of both types after short-term (3-5 h) treatment with it while the rates reached their control levels after long-term (24-48 h) incubation with the drug. Paxilline was not protective against the Cd2+-induced membrane permeability and respiration rate changes in isolated rat liver mitochondria. As result, the mitochondrial electron transport chain was concluded to contribute in the mitigating effect of paxilline against the Cd2+-produced cell injury. Although there are numerous studies on bisphenol A (BPA) on the testis and spermatozoa, the effect of BPA on the physiological link between the testis and maturation of spermatozoa has not been studied. To provide an optimal environment (acidic pH) for sperm maturation in the epididymis, clear cells secrete protons and principal cells reabsorb bicarbonate and the secreted proton. Because of its crucial role in sperm maturation and fertility, functional changes in the epididymis following BPA exposure must be considered to fully understand the mechanisms of BPA on male fertility. Here, we identified the adverse effects of BPA exposure during puberty in male ****. CD-1 male **** were gavaged daily with vehicle (corn oil) and 50 mg BPA/kg-BW for 6 weeks. We determined the changes in epididymis, functional sperm parameters including motility, capacitation status, tyrosine phosphorylation, and fertility-related protein expression and in vitro and in vivo fertility rate following BPA exposure. Expression of vacuolar-type H + -ATPase is necessary for the secretion of protons by clear cells of the caput epididymis and was directly down-regulated following BPA exposure, while there were no changes in the other epithelial cell types in the epididymis. Also, pERK 1/2 signaling pathway was increased significantly in the caput epididymis following BPA exposure. Consequently, the luminal pH slightly increased, resulting in premature capacitation of spermatozoa. Moreover, there was a significant loss of the acrosomal membrane following an increase of protein tyrosine phosphorylation, while PKA activity decreased during sperm capacitation. Fertility-related proteins also showed aberrant expression upon BPA exposure. These modifications resulted in decreased male fertility in vitro and in vivo.

  • Untreated, the disorder may be fatal or may result in irreversible neurological damage.The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of backpack load carriage on quiet standing postural control and limits of stability (LOS) of older adults. Fourteen older adults (65 [6] y) performed quiet standing and a forward, right, and left LOS test in 3 conditions, unloaded, stable, and unstable backpack loads while activity of 4 leg muscles was recorded. Stable and unstable loads decreased postural sway (main effect ηp2=.84, stable P less then .001, unstable P less then .001), mediolateral (main effect ηp2=.49, stable P = .002, unstable P = .018) and anterior-posterior (main effect ηp2=.64, stable P less then .001, unstable P = .001) fractal dimension, and LOS distance (main effect ηp2=.18, stable P = .011, unstable P = .046) compared with unloaded. Rectus femoris (main effect ηp2=.39, stable P = .001, unstable P = .010) and gastrocnemius (main effect ηp2=.30, unstable P = .027) activity increased in loaded conditions during LOS and quiet standing. Gastrocnemius-tibialis anterior coactivation was greater in unstable load than stable loaded quiet standing (main effect ηp2=.24, P = .040). These findings suggest older adults adopt conservative postural control strategies minimizing the need for postural corrections in loaded conditions. Reduced LOS may also increase fall risk when carrying a load. However, there was no difference between unstable and stable loads for postural control variables.Most upper-extremity musculoskeletal models represent the glenohumeral joint with an inherently stable ball-and-socket, but the physiological joint requires active muscle coordination for stability. The authors evaluated sensitivity of common predicted outcomes (instability, net glenohumeral reaction force, and rotator cuff activations) to different implementations of active stabilizing mechanisms (constraining net joint reaction direction and incorporating normalized surface electromyography [EMG]). Both EMG and reaction force constraints successfully reduced joint instability. For flexion, incorporating any normalized surface EMG data reduced predicted instability by 54.8%, whereas incorporating any force constraint reduced predicted instability by 43.1%. Other outcomes were sensitive to EMG constraints, but not to force constraints. For flexion, incorporating normalized surface EMG data increased predicted magnitudes of joint reaction force and rotator cuff activations by 28.7% and 88.4%, respectively. METHODS Cross-sectional surveys were conducted in 2016 in Scottish universities and colleges, and in 2017 in universities and colleges across the United Kingdom, and the data were pooled for the present study (N = 11,650). Cumulative ordinal logistic regression was used to model the association between PA levels and mental and personal well-being, social isolation, and perceptions of academic attainment and employability. RESULTS Only 51% of the respondents met the recommended levels of moderate to vigorous PA per week. There was a linear relationship between PA levels and all outcomes, with better scores in more active students. CONCLUSIONS UK university students are insufficiently active compared with the general population of 16- to 24-year olds. Yet, students with higher PA report better outcomes for mental and personal well-being, social isolation, and perceptions of academic attainment and employability.CONTEXT Tasks that activate the lateral trunk muscles are clinically relevant in athletic and rehabilitation programs. However, no electromyography studies have compared tasks aimed at lateral trunk muscle activation. OBJECTIVE To compare the activation magnitudes of the internal and external obliques between 4 tasks targeting recruitment of the lateral trunk muscles, including the proposal of a novel assessment. DESIGN Comparative laboratory study. SETTING University-based biomechanics laboratory. PARTICIPANTS Sixty-three participants (35 females, age = 23.6 [2.0] y, height = 1.72 [0.10] m, mass = 70.7 [14.4] kg, body mass index = 23.6 [2.86] kg/m2). INTERVENTION(S) Surface electromyography data were recorded bilaterally from the internal and external obliques while the participants performed 2 maximum voluntary contraction tasks followed by 4 isometric tasks. The isometric tasks included feet-elevated side-supported, trunk-elevated side-unsupported, lateral plank, and side-lying hip abduction. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES Maximum voluntary contraction-normalized and integrated muscle activities were calculated for targeted and nontargeted muscles in each task.

  • Background The thoracic spine is critical for athletic kinetic chain functioning yet widely overlooked in terms of specific evidenced-based exercise prescription. Thoracic mobility, motor control and strength are required to optimise performance in sport and minimise excessive load/stress on other components of the kinetic chain. Objective To identify and evaluate mobility, motor control, work capacity and strength thoracic exercises for use in athletes. Design Systematic review involving expert reviewers at key stages searches and screening (n=1), eligibility, evaluation, data extraction and evaluation (n=3). Key databases and social media sources were searched to 16 August 2019. Eligible exercises were thoracic exercises to promote mobility, motor control, work capacity and strength. A narrative synthesis enabled an outcome-based classification of exercises, with level of evidence of individual sources informing overall level of evidence for each outcome (Oxford Centre for Evidence-based Medicine). Results From 2348 sources (social media, database searches and other sources), 38 exercises were included. Sources included images, video clips and written descriptions of exercises. Exercises targeting all planes of motion were evaluated and classified according to outcome. Exercises comprised functional and non-functional exercises for mobility (n=9), work capacity (n=15), motor control (n=7) and strength (n=7). Overall level of evidence for each outcome was level 5. Conclusion This synthesis and evaluation of exercises has captured the scope of thoracic exercises used in 'practice'. Evaluation against an expert-derived outcome-based classification provides practitioners with a framework to facilitate exercise prescription. Methods A criteria was developed following a face validity assessment and a total of 31 Achilles tendon ultrasound images were analysed. Intra-rater and inter-rater reliability were assessed for overall tendinopathy stage (normal, reactive/early dysrepair or late dysrepair/degenerative) as well as for individual parameters (thickness, echogenicity and vascularity). Quadratic weighted kappa (kw) was used to report on reliability. Conclusions Overall, our data support the argument that new, well-intentioned rules adopted every season by the NFL have been proven to be too weak to make the NFL game safer.     Background The thoracic spine is critical for athletic kinetic chain functioning yet widely overlooked in terms of specific evidenced-based exercise prescription. Thoracic mobility, motor control and strength are required to optimise performance in sport and minimise excessive load/stress on other components of the kinetic chain. Objective To identify and evaluate mobility, motor control, work capacity and strength thoracic exercises for use in athletes. Design Systematic review involving expert reviewers at key stages searches and screening (n=1), eligibility, evaluation, data extraction and evaluation (n=3). Key databases and social media sources were searched to 16 August 2019. Eligible exercises were thoracic exercises to promote mobility, motor control, work capacity and strength. A narrative synthesis enabled an outcome-based classification of exercises, with level of evidence of individual sources informing overall level of evidence for each outcome (Oxford Centre for Evidence-based Medicine). Results From 2348 sources (social media, database searches and other sources), 38 exercises were included. Sources included images, video clips and written descriptions of exercises. Exercises targeting all planes of motion were evaluated and classified according to outcome. Exercises comprised functional and non-functional exercises for mobility (n=9), work capacity (n=15), motor control (n=7) and strength (n=7). Overall level of evidence for each outcome was level 5. Conclusion This synthesis and evaluation of exercises has captured the scope of thoracic exercises used in 'practice'. Evaluation against an expert-derived outcome-based classification provides practitioners with a framework to facilitate exercise prescription. Secondary aims were to assess both the intra-rater and inter-rater reliability of the criteria. Methods A criteria was developed following a face validity assessment and a total of 31 Achilles tendon ultrasound images were analysed. Intra-rater and inter-rater reliability were assessed for overall tendinopathy stage (normal, reactive/early dysrepair or late dysrepair/degenerative) as well as for individual parameters (thickness, echogenicity and vascularity). Quadratic weighted kappa (kw) was used to report on reliability. Completing the scenario, it belongs to serotype O154H25 and to sequence type 101-B1, which has been epidemiologically linked to extraintestinal infections as well as to antimicrobial resistance spread. This study with E. coli strain EC121 shows that clinical isolates considered opportunistic might be true pathogens that go underestimated.We report on the electrical properties of glasses with nominal composition xB2O3-(100-x)[40Fe2O3-60P2O5],x = 2-20, mol.%. The conduction transport in these glasses is polaronic and shows a strong dependence on Fe2O3 content and polaron number density. The changes in DC conductivity are found not to be directly related to B2O3, however structural changes induced by its addition impact frequency-dependent conductivity. All glasses obey Summerfield and Sidebottom procedures of scaling conductivity spectra indicating that the polaronic mechanism does not change with temperature. An attempt to produce a super-master curve revealed that shape of the conductivity dispersion is the same for glasses with up to 15.0 mol.% B2O3 but differs for glass with the highest B2O3 content. This result could be related to the presence of borate units in the glass network. Moreover, the spatial extent of localized polaron motions increases with the decrease of polaron number density, however, this increase shows a larger slope than for previously reported iron phosphate glasses most probably due to the influence of B2O3 on glass structure and formation of polarons. While Summerfield scaling procedure fails, Sidebottom scaling yields a super-master curve, which indicates that polaronic hopping lengths also change with changing polaron number density in these glasses.Meloidogyne enterolobii, an aggressive plant-parasitic nematode, has been causing great yield loss worldwide in recent years. With no resistant Chinese cabbage cultivar available currently, a biological control strategy is needed to offer an eco-friendly option for sustainable farming. In this study, the nematode suppression efficacy of two newly isolated fungi, Paraboeremia taiwanensis and Samsoniella sp., were evaluated against M. enterolobii and compared to the known biological control agents Hyalorbilia oviparasitica strain DoUCR50 and Purpureocillium lilacinum strain 251 (PL251). Both P. taiwanensis and Samsoniella sp. reduced 29%-63% disease severity as effectively as the commercial product PL251 on Chinese cabbage in greenhouse trails. The in vitro egg infection rate was 47.83% by P. taiwanensis and 47.50% for Samsoniella sp., respectively. A special protocol for scanning electron microscope observation of the fungi-infected nematodes was established in this study, and the egg parasitism of the four fungi against M. enterolobii was further confirmed. For all fungi examined in this study, fungal hyphae were seen apparently penetrating into M. enterolobii eggs without destructive damage of the overall outer eggshell and the hyphae continued to grow within eggs after 6 days of infection. On the other hand, the spectrum processing is of great importance, since it is used both in the generation of a library of fluorescence spectra taken in the laboratory and in the continuous analysis of the samples and in the comparison algorithm for identification. The validity of the system is based on the last process that is carried out in a very short time. This article describes a system to process spectra in a more accelerated way.The non-opioid analgesic metamizole (dipyrone) is commonly used in Germany despite its narrow indications and market withdrawal from several countries. In this study we analyzed prescribing patterns of metamizole focusing on regional differences. The source of data was the "Information system for health care data" which includes data from the statutory health insurance funds for about 70 million Germans. We received aggregated data of individuals with at least one metamizole prescription in 2010 as well as the number of prescribed packages by age, sex, state and district along with the number of insured persons in each stratum. We calculated prescription prevalence stratified by age, sex, state and district. Among 68.4 million insured persons (mean age 43.6 years; 53.0% female) 5.5 million received at least one metamizole prescription (8.1%, overall 12.2 million packages). Prevalence increased with age, and women received metamizole more often than men. In adults (total prevalence 9.4%), levels varied between 7.0% (Saxony) and 11.1% (Schleswig-Holstein), whereas on a district level use ranged from 4.3% to 14.3%. In 2010, one of 12 individuals received metamizole at least once. Noticeable were the large regional variations which certainly cannot be explained by patient-related factors.LpxT is an inner membrane protein that transfers a phosphate group from the essential lipid undecaprenyl pyrophosphate (C-55PP) to the lipid A moiety of lipopolysaccharide, generating a lipid A tris-phosphorylated species. Moreover, the cells became sensitive to detergents and to hypo-osmotic shock, indicating that they had cell envelope defects. Indeed, lpxT overexpression in mutants lacking the L,D-transpeptidase LdtD and LdtE, which protect cells with outer membrane defects from osmotic lysis, caused cell envelope defects.

Since the late 1990s therapeutic angiogenesis has been investigated as an alternative to traditional PAD treatments. Among the challenges the field has faced has been a lack of standardization of the timings and measures used to validate new treatment approaches. Methods Changes in primary cilia during silicosis and myofibroblast differentiation were detected in silicotic patients, experimental silicotic rats, and a myofibroblast differentiation model induced by SiO2. We also explored the mechanisms underlying KIF3A regulation of Glioma-associated oncogene homologs (GLIs) involved in myofibroblast differentiation. Results Primary cilia (marked by ARL13B and Ac-α-Tub) and ciliary-related proteins (IFT 88 and KIF3A) were increased initially and then decreased as silicosis progressed. Loss and shedding of primary cilia were also found during silicosis. Treatment of ****5 fibroblasts with silica and then transfection of KIF3A-siRNA blocked activation of SHH signalling, but increased GLI2FL as a transcriptional activator of SRF, and reduced the inhibitory effect of GLI3R on ACTA2. We also explored the mechanisms underlying KIF3A regulation of Glioma-associated oncogene homologs (GLIs) involved in myofibroblast differentiation. Results Primary cilia (marked by ARL13B and Ac-α-Tub) and ciliary-related proteins (IFT 88 and KIF3A) were increased initially and then decreased as silicosis progressed. Loss and shedding of primary cilia were also found during silicosis. Treatment of MRC-5 fibroblasts with silica and then transfection of KIF3A-siRNA blocked activation of SHH signalling, but increased GLI2FL as a transcriptional activator of SRF, and reduced the inhibitory effect of GLI3R on ACTA2. Therefore, the study objectives were to (1) describe the SME of a nationally representative sample of US adults, and (2) determine the associations between SME and HPV-related awareness, HPV-related knowledge, HPV vaccine-related awareness, and perceived HPV vaccine efficacy. In 2019, we completed a secondary analysis of the 2017 Health Information National Trends Survey (Cycle 5.1). We created the SME index from 5 social media items. For each outcome variable, 3 models using binary and multinomial logistic regression were estimated. SME in the sample (n = 3171) was low (M = 0.9; range 0-2). Respondents with higher SME had higher odds of HPV awareness (AOR = 1.56; 95% CI = 1.23, 1.99). Higher SME was associated with awareness of the HPV vaccine (AOR = 1.46; 95% CI = 1.16, 1.85). Respondents with higher SME had higher odds of perceiving HPV vaccine to be "not at all successful" (AOR = 2.22; 95% CI = 1.16, 4.24), "a little successful" (AOR = 1.99; 95% CI = 1.35, 2.94), "pretty successful" (AOR = 1.40; 95% CI = 1.04, 1.89), and "very successful" (AOR = 1.40; 95% CI = 1.02, 1.92) compared to those who selected "don't know" after adjusting for demographics and internet use. To evaluate facility readiness we used the Improving Data for Decision Making in Global Cervical Cancer Programmes toolkit on six domains - potential staffing, infrastructure, equipment and supplies, infection prevention, medicines and laboratory testing, and data management. Composite scores were created by summing responses within domains, standardizing scores across domains at each facility level, and averaging across districts/states. Overall, readiness scores were low for cervical cancer screening. At SHCs, the lowest scores were observed in 'infrastructure' (0.55) and 'infection prevention' (0.44), while PHCs had low 'potential staffing' scores (0.50) due to limited manpower to diagnose and treat (cryotherapy) potential cases. Scores were higher for tiers conducting diagnostic work-up and treatment/referral. The highest scores were in 'potential staffing' except for PHCs, while the lowest scores were in 'infection & prevention' and 'medicines and laboratory'. Goa and Maharashtra were consistently among the top 5 ranking states for readiness. The results obtained in the present study can be summarized as follows. First, the overall proportion of "points" called by the judge for the general protector (32.3%) was approximately 3.4 times that for the electronic protector (9.5%). In this study, we investigated the role of SPON2 and related signaling pathway in gastric cancer progression and metastasis. SPON2 expression levels were found to be upregulated in gastric cancer cell lines and patient tissues compared to normal gastric epithelial cells and normal controls. Furthermore, SPON2 silencing was observed to decrease cell proliferation and motility and reduce tumor growth in xenograft ****. Here we show a new cystic fibrosis 3D stromal lung model made up of primary fibroblasts embedded in their own extracellular matrix and investigate its morphological and transcriptomic features. Cystic fibrosis fibroblasts showed a high proliferation rate and produced an abundant and chaotic matrix with increased protein content and elastic modulus. More interesting, they had enhanced pro-fibrotic markers and genes involved in epithelial function and inflammatory response. In conclusion, our study reveals that cystic fibrosis fibroblasts maintain in vitro an activated pro-fibrotic state. This abnormality may play in vivo a role in the modulation of epithelial and inflammatory cell behavior and lung remodeling.

A log-linear analysis was carried out to investigate the effect of the grouping factors (IVs) on the skills (DV) using SPSS Statistics. The results obtained in the present study can be summarized as follows. First, the overall proportion of "points" called by the judge for the general protector (32.3%) was approximately 3.4 times that for the electronic protector (9.5%). Second, for the electronic protector, the propor, such as for a hit movement to the face/head part, represent characteristics of increased attack skills to the facial area; these scores are provided through subjective judgement, and consequently changes in performance skills can occur.Spondin-2 (SPON2) is involved in cancer progression and metastasis of many tumors; however, its role and underlying mechanism in gastric cancer are still obscure. In this study, we investigated the role of SPON2 and related signaling pathway in gastric cancer progression and metastasis. SPON2 expression levels were found to be upregulated in gastric cancer cell lines and patient tissues compared to normal gastric epithelial cells and normal controls. Furthermore, SPON2 silencing was observed to decrease cell proliferation and motility and reduce tumor growth in xenograft mice. Conversely, SPON2 overexpression was found to increase cell proliferation and motility. Subsequently, we focused on regulatory mechanism of SPON2 in gastric cancer. cDNA microarray and in vitro study showed that Notch signaling is significantly correlated to SPON2 expression. Therefore, we confirmed how Notch signaling pathway regulate SPON2 expression using Notch signaling-related transcription factor interaction and reporter gene assay. Additionally, activation of Notch signaling was observed to increase cell proliferation, migration, and invasion through SPON2 expression. Our study demonstrated that Notch signaling-mediated SPON2 upregulation is associated with aggressive progression of gastric cancer. Here we show a new cystic fibrosis 3D stromal lung model made up of primary fibroblasts embedded in their own extracellular matrix and investigate its morphological and transcriptomic features. Cystic fibrosis fibroblasts showed a high proliferation rate and produced an abundant and chaotic matrix with increased protein content and elastic modulus. More interesting, they had enhanced pro-fibrotic markers and genes involved in epithelial function and inflammatory response. In conclusion, our study reveals that cystic fibrosis fibroblasts maintain in vitro an activated pro-fibrotic state. This abnormality may play in vivo a role in the modulation of epithelial and inflammatory cell behavior and lung remodeling.

There were no pesticides in the sediment from the conventional system. In the water of the organic system, only propoxur (below the LOQ) was registered. Metalaxil (0.025 μg kg-1) were verified in the sediment, while diphenoconazole, dinoxifene and tebuconazole were below the LOQ. The presence of these pesticides in crops with an organic production system may be related to proximity to crops to conventional production systems. Besides this, the amount is very low as compared with conventional system. Muscle glycogen, protein and amino acid levels were higher in fish collected in organic ponds. Lactate and ammonia levels were higher in conventional cultures. Lipids and proteins had greater oxidative damage in both tissues in the conventional system. The ****reactor exhibited a higher energy recovery rate and stronger performance compared with the UASB reactor. The optimal organic loading rates of the ****and UASB reactors were 17.93 and 8.85 kg chemical oxygen demand (COD)/m3/d, with methane conversion rates of 0.21 and 0.15 m3 CH4/kg COD, respectively. Furthermore, the engineering costs and project floor space required by the ****reactor are less than those in the case of the UASB reactor.

The aim of the present study was to volumetrically evaluate the effectiveness and mid-long-term stability of a porcine-derived collagen matrix (PDCM) (Mucoderm®, Botiss gmbh, Berlin, Germany) in increasing soft tissue volume at the buccal aspect of molar implant sites. Methods Periodontally healthy non-smoking patients with a single tooth gap in the molar area were selected for a prospective case series. All sites had a bucco-oral bone dimension of at least 8 mm and demonstrated a horizontal alveolar defect. A wide diameter implant was placed under the elevated buccal flap and a PDCM was applied. The primary outcome was the linear increase in buccal soft tissue profile (BSP) within a well-defined area of interest. This was performed with designated software (SMOP; Swissmeda AG, ZCM demonstrated marked resorption during the early stages of healing. Due to the matrix thickening the tissues, and the permanent crown displacing the tissues, 76.5% of the initial increase in BSP could be maintained over a three-year period. Half of the patients failed to show perfect soft tissue convexity at the buccal aspect.Since the introduction of rental E-scooters in Germany in mid-June 2019, the safety of this new means of transport has been the subject of extensive public debate. However, valid data on injuries and usage habits are not yet available. This retrospective two-center study included a total of 76 patients who presented to the emergency department following E-scooter-related accidents. Participants attended the laboratory after ≥3 h fast on two occasions for early (AM; 8-10 a.m.) and late (PM; 4-6 p.m.) counterbalanced testing sessions in a 2 × 2 design. Appetite ratings and food reward (validated diurnal Leeds Food Preference Questionnaire) were measured in response to a standardized test meal. LC was associated with higher BMI (p = 0.01), but not with EI or TFEQ. The composite appetite score was lower in AM than PM (MΔ= -5 (95% CI -10, -0.2) mm, p = 0.040). Perceived test meal fillingness was higher in AM than PM and EC compared to LC (p ≤ 0.038). Liking and wanting high-fat food were lower in AM than PM (p ≤ 0.004). The late chronotype was associated with greater desire for high-fat food (p = 0.006). This risk is even more serious in pediatric dentistry, since affected children, frequently, present an asymptomatic, mild or moderate clinical viral infection and, therefore, they may play a major role in community-based COVID-19 transmission. To date, despite no universal guidelines are available for dental procedures in pediatric dentistry during COVID-19 outbreak, routine dental practice should be postponed and only severe dental emergencies must be treated. In the case of a dental emergency, involving a pediatric patient, dentists should be aware of which recommended management protocol can be adopted during the practice to protect patient health, to safeguard their-self and to prevent viral transmission. Forty-four adults were divided into early (EC; Morningness-Eveningness Questionnaire (MEQ) score = 55 ± 5) or late chronotype (LC; MEQ score = 40 ± 6) and assessed for body mass index, habitual energy intake (EI; three-day online dietary record) and eating behavior traits from the Three-Factor Eating Questionnaire (TFEQ). Participants attended the laboratory after ≥3 h fast on two occasions for early (AM; 8-10 a.m.) and late (PM; 4-6 p.m.) counterbalanced testing sessions in a 2 × 2 design. Appetite ratings and food reward (validated diurnal Leeds Food Preference Questionnaire) were measured in response to a standardized test meal. LC was associated with higher BMI (p = 0.01), but not with EI or TFEQ. The composite appetite score was lower in AM than PM (MΔ= -5 (95% CI -10, -0.2) mm, p = 0.040). Perceived test meal fillingness was higher in AM than PM and EC compared to LC (p ≤ 0.038). Liking and wanting high-fat food were lower in AM than PM (p ≤ 0.004). The late chronotype was associated with greater desire for high-fat food (p = 0.006). To conclude, early meal timing and early chronotype are independently associated with smaller appetite and lower desire for high-fat food.Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has spread rapidly across the globe, becoming a major public health challenge not for China only, but also for countries around the world. Despite worldwide efforts to contain viral spread, the outbreak has not been stopped yet. Among healthcare personnel, dentists seem to be at elevated risk of exposure to COVID-19. This risk is even more serious in pediatric dentistry, since affected children, frequently, present an asymptomatic, mild or moderate clinical viral infection and, therefore, they may play a major role in community-based COVID-19 transmission. To date, despite no universal guidelines are available for dental procedures in pediatric dentistry during COVID-19 outbreak, routine dental practice should be postponed and only severe dental emergencies must be treated. In the case of a dental emergency, involving a pediatric patient, dentists should be aware of which recommended management protocol can be adopted during the practice to protect patient health, to safeguard their-self and to prevent viral transmission. The aim of this paper is to provide clinical recommendations, presenting a needed tool for dentists to allow a valid and safe how-to-do protocol. Pediatric dentists should keep a high level of awareness to help patients, minimize risk and prevent viral spread.After almost 40 years, the 27 member states (MS) of the European Union (EU) will comply with the European Law 429/2016 in 2021 by completing a process of unification and harmonization of all regulations related to animal health between MS. These new provisions are based on modern scientific principles on animal health, on long-term epidemiological data, and, above all, on the most current risk assessment and analysis. The paper describes all changes and updates, which will impact the Italian current National regulation. A total of 58 animal diseases have been included in the Annex II ("Listing") and Annex IV ("Categorization") of the new Delegated Act (DA 2018/1629). Five diseases comprising the great viral epizooties were automatically included on the list because of their primary importance. These diseases include foot and mouth disease (FMD), African swine fever (ASF), classical swine fever (CSF), highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI), and African horse sickness (AHS). Another 53 diseases have been identified by the ad hoc assessment on listing and categorization of animal diseases developed by the European Food Safety Association.
