Here, we provide the first comprehensive study of the influence of interactions on the two main relaxation mechanisms internal (Néel) and Brownian relaxation. While non-interacting magnetic nanoparticles show Debye behavior with an effective relaxation time, many authors use this model also for the interacting case. Since Néel relaxation is typically a thermally activated process on times scales that are many orders of magnitude larger than the underlying micromagnetic times, we use extensive computer simulations employing a Brownian dynamics/Monte-Carlo algorithm to show that dipolar interactions lead to significant deviations from the Debye behavior. We find that Néel and Brownian relaxation can be considered as independent processes for short enough times until dipolar interactions lead to a coupling of these mechanisms, making the interpretation more difficult. We provide mean-field arguments that describe these short and long-time, effective relaxation times well for weak up to moderate interaction strengths.   • Despite the use of blue dye and radioisotopes, sentinel lymph node biopsy (SLNB) is still associated with a high false-negative rate (FNR). The off-label use of indocyanine green (ICG) and near-infrared fluorescence (NIRF) imaging has been introduced with the objective of assisting SLNB and thereby improving regional control in melanoma. The objective of this study was to review and summarize the general experience, protocols and outcomes of the use of ICG and NIRF to assist SLNB in melanoma.

    A systematic literature review was performed in December 2019 as per the PRISMA guidelines. Inclusion criteria were articles written in English describing the applications of ICG in patients with melanoma. Systematic reviews, animal studies, case reports and letters to editors were excluded.

    Of the 585 studies retrieved, 13 articles met the inclusion criteria. The reported sentinel lymph node (SLN) detection rate using ICG was between 86 and 100% of nodes identified by lymphoscintigraphy. The average number of nodes per patient detected using ICG was 2. ICG fluorescence imaging contributed to the identification of 2.0% of the total number of SLNs harvested.

    The purpose of this study was to evaluate a series of retrieved sleeved ceramic femoral heads used in total hip arthroplasty (THA) and determine qualitative and quantitative damage and corrosion patterns.

    An IRB-approved implant retrieval database was utilized to identify all sleeved ceramic femoral heads collected from 1995 to 2004. There were 16 implants with an average duration of in situ of 70 months (range, 13-241 months). The femoral stem was known in 14 cases and was titanium alloy in each of those cases. None were revised for metal-related complications. Ten implants (63%) were from primary THAs, and 6 (38%) were from revision THAs. https://www.selleckchem.com/products/dlin-kc2-dma.html Damage and corrosion were qualitatively graded using a modified Goldberg method. A quantitative assessment was performed with a coordinate measurement machine (CMM).

    Among the 16 retrieved implants, 1 (6%) demonstrated severe Grade 4 corrosion, 5 (31%) had moderate Grade 3 corrosion, 5 (31%) had mild Grade 2 corrosion, and 5 (31%) had no visible corrosion at the inner sleeve that interfaces with the stem trunnion. The only case of grade 4 corrosion occurred in the only head-sleeve in the study that was not factory assembled and was mated with a titanium molybdenum zirconium ferrous (TMZF) alloy stem. The mean maximum linear corrosion depth at the taper interface, as measured by the CMM, was 7.7 microns (range, 0.9-32.9 microns).

    This study is the first to quantify corrosion at the titanium interface of sleeved ceramic femoral heads. Potentially clinically significant damage and corrosion patterns were observed in a few failed retrievals; however, the majority of cases demonstrated minimal or no damage.

    The aim of this study is to evaluate medical and surgical complications of liver cirrhosis patients following total hip arthroplasty (THA), with attention to different etiologies of cirrhosis and their financial burden following THA.

    In total, 18,321 cirrhotics and 722,757 non-cirrhotics who underwent primary elective THA between 2006 and 2013 were identified from a retrospective database review. This cohort was further subdivided into 2 major etiologies of cirrhosis (viral and alcoholic cirrhosis) and other cirrhotic etiology. Cirrhotics were compared to non-cirrhotics for hospital length of stay, 90-day mean total charges and reimbursement, hospital readmission, and major medical and arthroplasty-specific complications.

    Cirrhosis was associated with increased rates of major medical complications (4.3% vs 2.4%; odds ratio [OR] 1.20, P < .001), minor medical complications, transfusion (3.4% vs 2.1%; OR 1.16, P= .001), encephalopathy, disseminated intravascular coagulation, and readmission (13.5% vs 8s and healthcare utilization following elective THA.
    Postoperative pancreatic fistula/POPF is the most feared complication in pancreatic surgery. Although several systematic reviews investigated the impact of somatostatin analogues on POPF, no stratification was performed regarding type of pancreatic resection (pancreaticoduodenectomy/PD; distal pancreatectomy/DP) and different somatostatin analogues.

    This study was planed according to the Preferred-Reporting-Items-for-Systematic -Review-and-Meta-Analysis/PRISMA-guidelines. After screening databases for randomized controlled trials/RCT, studies were stratified into pancreatic resection techniques and data were pooled in meta-analyses containing subgroups of octreotide, somatostatin, lanreotide, pasireotide and vapreotide.

    The meta-analysis of studies with a mixed cohort of patients after pancreatic resection revealed a protective effect of somatostatin analogues for morbidity (RR 0.71, p<.00001) but not for mortality (RR 1.07,=0.78) or intra-abdominal abscesses (RR 1.00, p=1.00). Moreover, no effect was visible for mortality (RR 1.57, p=.15), morbidity (RR 0.87, p=.15) and intra-abdominal abscesses (RR 0.92, p=.48) after PD. The meta-analysis of patients after PD revealed no impact of somatostatin analogues on POPF (RR 0.87, p=.19) and clinically relevant POPF (RR 0.69, p=.30). However, treatment with somatostatin analogues in the mixed cohort showed less POPF (RR 0.60, p<.00001) and clinically relevant POPF (RR 0.47, p=.02), which was also the case after DP (RR 0.41, p=.03).

    Somatostatin analogues did not affect POPF and clinically relevant POPF after PD, but seemed to be associated with less POPF after DP. As no sufficiently powered RCT could be identified by the systematic review, further RCTs are urgently needed to investigate the effect of somatostatin analogues after DP.

  • A cultural model of panic and dishonesty begins to take shape through the COVID-19 pandemic. Fearmongering and the portrayal of residential care as lacking transparency will likely create future mistrust of the industry. The depiction of vulnerability and the illusion of resident inclusion in the news coverage enable paternalistic decision-making and care practices in the name of supposed protection.Local signaling events at synapses or axon terminals are communicated to the nucleus to elicit transcriptional responses, and thereby translate information about the external environment into internal neuronal representations. This retrograde signaling is critical to dendritic growth, synapse development, and neuronal plasticity. Here, we demonstrate that neuronal activity induces retrograde translocation and nuclear accumulation of endosomal adaptor APPL1. Disrupting the interaction of APPL1 with Importin α1 abolishes nuclear accumulation of APPL1, which in turn decreases the levels of histone acetylation. We further demonstrate that retrograde translocation of APPL1 is required for the regulation of gene transcription and then maintenance of hippocampal late-phase long-term potentiation. Thus, these results illustrate an APPL1-mediated pathway that contributes to the modulation of synaptic plasticity via coupling neuronal activity with chromatin remodeling.
    Few high-quality studies have clarified whether hypertonic saline is best administered as slow continuous infusion (SCI) therapy or rapid intermittent bolus (RIB) therapy for symptomatic severe hyponatremia.

    To compare the risk of overcorrection in RIB and SCI with hypertonic saline in patients with symptomatic hyponatremia.

    This prospective, investigator-initiated, multicenter, open-label, randomized clinical trial enrolled 178 patients older than 18 years with moderately severe to severe hyponatremia and glucose-corrected serum sodium (sNa) levels of 125 mmol/L or less. Recruitment took place from August 24, 2016, until August 21, 2019, across emergency departments and wards of 3 general hospitals in the Republic of Korea.

    Either RIB or SCI of hypertonic saline, 3%, for 24 to 48 hours stratified by the severity of clinical symptoms.

This prospective, investigator-initiated, multicenter, open-label, randomized clinical trial enrolled 178 patients older than 18 years with moderately severe to severe hyponatremia and glucose-corrected serum sodium (sNa) levels of 125 mmol/L or less. Recruitment took place from August 24, 2016, until August 21, 2019, across emergency departments and wards of 3 general hospitals in the Republic of Korea. The Self-Evaluation of Negative Symptoms (SNS) has shown good psychometric properties when used in outpatients with higher-level functioning schizophrenia. We aimed to evaluate the psychometric properties of the SNS in low functioning participants with treatment-resistant schizophrenia (TRS).

    Participants were assessed using the following measures at two time-points; time-point 1 SNS, Wide Range Achievement Test, 4th Edition Reading Subtest (WRAT-4), and Brief Assessment of Cognition in Schizophrenia (****). Diagnosis of myositis was suspected and confirmed with electromyography and muscle biopsy. Improvement in muscle symptoms was observed after stopping adalimumab and starting corticosteroids. Muscular adverse effects are well-known and usually benign with adalimumab. However, five cases of myositis during treatment with adalimumab were registered in French PharmacoVigilance Database (FPVD) with muscle symptoms observed 3 months to 7 years after starting adalimumab. In VigiBaseⓇ, 90 cases of myositis associated with adalimumab with some similar characteristics were registered. When a patient treated with adalimumab complains of muscular symptoms, inflammatory myopathies should be considered.     This study aims to assess the feasibility and impact on long-term pulmonary function of chest drain removal on the operation day following thoracoscopic right upper lobectomy for clinical stage I non-small cell lung cancer.

    We retrospectively evaluated the data of 116 patients between May 2013 and March 2019. We evaluated the correlations of clinical parameters of chest drain removal and medium- and long-term pulmonary function by comparing removal on operation day (R group) and retainment (D group).

    The R group comprised 64 patients, and the D group had 52 patients. Fifty patients (96.2%) in the D group had chest drain removed within 3 postoperative days. Since February 2016, chest drain removal on operation day was performed in 64 of 74 patients (86.5%) according to our chest drain removal protocol. Removal of chest drains on operation day was associated with shorter postoperative hospitalization (p < 0.01) and lower postoperative complications ≧ grade II of the Clavien-Dindo classification (p = 0.026). Only one patient in the R group needed reinsertion. The R group had greater spirometry results at 3- and 12-postoperative months (POM). R group patients had statistically improved pulmonary functions from 3 to 12POM, while those in the D Group were stagnated at 6POM.

In this study, we describe the use of patient-specific 3D models for tracheal resection. We performed preoperative simulations for two patients diagnosed with tracheal ganglioneuroma and adenoid cystic carcinoma; the mimic operations suggested the necessity of a short cuff intubation tube across the surgical field, indicating the recommended amount of dissection around the trachea and bilateral hilum prior to tracheal reconstruction. The postoperative courses were free from any anastomotic or pulmonary complications. We described the availability of preoperative simulations for complicated tracheal resection and reconstruction using patient-specific 3D printed models. Mimic operations using the 3D printed models allowed accurate preparation and confidence in selection of the optimal surgical strategy.

Hence, we sought to describe the clinical characteristics of dialysis patients with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection.

    We reviewed clinical outcomes, which consisted of clinical data extracted from the medical records of 695 registered dialysis patients at the Dialysis Center of Central Hospital of Wuhan from January 13th, 2020, to February 29th, 2020, and performed statistical analysis. According to the results, there were 447, 227 and 21 hemodialysis (HD), peritoneal dialysis (PD) and combined HD and PD (HD&PD) cases, respectively.

    During the outbreak of COVID-19, 36 dialysis patients were infected by SARS-CoV-2. Among those 36 patients, 32 (7.2%) were on HD, and 4 (1.8%) were on PD. When comparing SARS-CoV-2 infection between HD and PD, the relative risk was 4.07 (RR = 4.07, 95% CI 1.46-11.35). We noted a median age of 66years during the observation period, and the number of male patients was 23 (63.9%). There were 15 fatal cases tested positive for SARS-CoV-2 (13 cases on HD and 2 cases on PD). By comparing mortality in the same period of 2018, 2019 and 2020, the all-cause mortality of hemodialysis patients was significantly higher in 2020 (4.89%) than in either 2018 (2.55%) or 2019 (1.97%). The pigments were extracted by an optimized solvent system, purified by flash chromatography and were identified by TLC and UV/VIS spectroscopy. The absorbance spectra confirmed the presence of β-carotene, β-cryptoxanthin, torulene and torularhodin that showed maximum absorbance (λmax ) within the ranges. The fractions were further characterized by LC/MS and analyzed through FT-IR and NMR for structure elucidation. Spectral analyses also confirmed the presence of the compounds mentioned above. These compounds promise great commercial value and could be useful for large scale production anticipated for potential applications in food, nutraceutical, pharmaceutical and cosmetic sectors. The Student t-test was applied to analyze continponses. Critically ill patients frequently need blood transfusions. For safety, blood must be delivered via syringe infusion pumps, yet this can cause red cell damage and increase the rate of haemolysis. To evaluate biochemical and haemolytic markers of red blood cells transfused in three different types of syringe infusion pumps at two different infusion rates (10 and 100 mL/h). A lab-based study using aliquots of 16 red blood cell bags was undertaken. Haemolysis markers (total haemoglobin [g/dL], haematocrit [%], free haemoglobin [g/dL], potassium [mmol/L], lactate dehydrogenase [U/L], osmolality [mOsm/kg], pH, degree of haemolysis [%]) were measured before and after red blood cell infusion and exposure. Three different syringe infusion pumps brands (A, B, and C) were compared at two different infusion rates (10 and 100 mL/h). Total haemoglobin fell significantly in all red blood cell units during manipulation (pre-infusion 26.44 ± 5.74; post-exposure 22.62 ± 4.00; P = .026). The degree of haemolysis significantly increased by 40% after manipulation of the red blood cells.

Validation was performed using 10-fold cross-validation. The added prognostic value of the radiomic features to clinical features and volume was also evaluated. The radiomics-based signature had good prognostic power for OS and loco-regional recurrence-free survival (LRFS), with C-index of 0.68 and 0.72, respectively. In all the cases, the addition of radiomics to clinical features improved the prognostic performance.   • Three lactic acid bacteria (LAB) strains identified as Lactobacillus plantarum, Lactobacillusbrevis, and Lactobacillussakei isolated from meat products were tested for their ability to utilize and grow on xylooligosaccharides (XOSs). The extent of carbohydrate utilization by the studied strains was analyzed by HPLC. All three strains showed preferences for the degree of polymerization (DP). The added oligosaccharides induced the LAB to form end-products of typical mixed-acid fermentation. The utilization of XOSs by the microorganisms requires the action of three important enzymes β-xylosidase (EC 3.2.1.37) exo-oligoxylanase (EC 3.2.1.156) and α-L-arabinofuranosidase (EC 3.2.1.55). The presence of intracellular β-D-xylosidase in Lb. brevis, Lb. plantarum, and Lb.sakei suggest that XOSs might be the first imported into the cell by oligosaccharide transporters, followed by their degradation to xylose. The studies on the influence of XOS intake on the lipids of rat liver plasma membranes showed that oligosaccharides display various beneficial effects for the host organism, which are probably specific for each type of prebiotic used. The utilization of different types of oligosaccharides may help to explain the ability of Lactobacillus strains to compete with other bacteria in the ecosystem of the human gastrointestinal tract.Urethane-acrylate thermoset resins (UATR) are a new type of polymeric matrix that have recently made a strong breakthrough in the composites sector. This is because of their properties, which make them an advantageous alternative to epoxy resins, especially if they are reinforced with high-performance fibers such as aramids. Graphene-based nanocomposites are one of the most dynamic research fields in nanotechnology, because graphenic materials greatly improve the properties of traditional composites. This work represents a comparative study of the effect of adding three types of graphenic materials on the mechanical properties of UATR/aramid composites. Several UATR polymeric matrices were doped at 2% w/w with graphene nanoplatelets (GNPs), reduced graphene oxide (rGO) and pristine few-layer graphene (FLG), and reinforced with Twaron CT709 para-aramid fibers. The obtained laminates showed low density (1.38 g·cm-3), a high volumetric fiber-resin ratio (8020), homogeneous dispersion of the nanoreinforcement, high reproducibility, and easy scalability. The tensile, flexural and impact strength properties of the undoped composite and the graphene-doped nanocomposites were determined. Although there was significant increase in the maximum mouth opening after TENS for only TMD group, the maximum bite force of both groups was significantly greater after TENS. Eight self-assessment tools and ten OHL attributes have been identified. Eleven quality-improvement characteristics and 15 key barriers were reviewed. Evidence on the effectiveness of HL tools provides best practices and recommendations to enhance OHL capacities. Results indicated that shifting to a comprehensive OHL would likely be a complex process because HL is not usually integrated into the healthcare organization's vision and strategic planning.

    In-growing toenails commonly affect young men hampering the quality of life. There are many methods to treat in-growing toe nail but most of them have high recurrence rates and poor patient satisfaction. We describe our results of segmental matrix excision for correction of ingrowing toe nails.

    It is a retrospective study over a period of 2 years. Patients with symptomatic in-growing toe nails with stage II and III were operated by technique of segmental matrix excision. All patients were available for follow-up at ∼1 year.

    90 patients, 59 males and 31females with ingrowing nail of great toe (108 toes and 120 surgical sites) that underwent correction of by segmental matrix excision. Patient's age ranged from 19 to 59 years.     A prospective study was conducted in patients aged 18-65 years with preoperative hemoglobin >12g/dl undergoing total knee replacement or total hip replacement. Patients in whom hemodilution was performed were included in the ANH group whereas patients undergoing treatment as per the routine hospital protocol were included in the control group.

    Preoperative hemoglobin was similar in both ANH and control groups (12.7±0.7 vs 12.6±0.6, p=0.56). Allogeneic blood requirement was significantly less in the ANH group as compared to the control group (4 vs 15, p=0.001). Postoperative complications were significantly lower in ANH group as compared to control group (7 vs 16, p=0.01).
