    Extensive empirical evidence suggests that high Callous-Unemotional (CU) traits in childhood and adolescence can reliably identify individuals at risk for antisocial outcomes. The present study addresses research gaps by investigating the factor structure of CU traits in children at preschool age.

    The sample includes 371 children (49.6% female, M age = 4.7, SD = 0.69). Using the Inventory of Callous-Unemotional-Traits (ICU), six alternative confirmatory factor analyses were conducted to find the best fitting model for our preschool sample. Children's level of emotional competence and aggressive behavior was assed using a German questionnaire, the Behavior Rating Scales for Preschoolers (Verhaltensskalen für das Kindergartenalter, VSK) in a preschool teachers' rating. Post hoc cluster analytic strategies and ANOVA were applied to identify groups of children with regard to their combination of social-emotional competences and CU traits, and to examine associations with aggressive behavior.

In particular, structural remodelling of lipid A and sterol-analogues known as hopanoids are instrumental in stress acclimation. Here, we discuss how the unique outer membrane lipid composition of rhizobia may underpin their resilience in the face of increasing osmotic stress expected due to climate change, illustrating the importance of studying microbial membranes and highlighting potential avenues towards more sustainable soil additives.
    Epithelioid haemangioendothelioma (EHE) is an ultrarare vascular sarcoma with an incidence of <1/million/year and a large clinical heterogeneity. Data on supportive care needs of rare cancer patients are scarce. This study aimed to investigate the level of supportive care needs of EHE patients and its association with sociodemographic, clinical and symptom burden characteristics.

    We present secondary data of a cross-sectional questionnaire study involving EHE patients recruited from the international EHE Facebook group. Data were collected using the web-based PROFILES registry. Unmet needs were measured with Supportive Care Needs Survey Short Form (SCNS-SF34).

    115 EHE patients from 20 countries completed the online questionnaire. Mean level of supportive care needs was 68.4 (range 34-170), with the highest mean score on the psychological domain. Supportive care needs were associated with age, disease stage, years since diagnosis and number of tumour locations. Highly symptomatic patients (33%) reported more supportive care needs than patients with low or intermediate symptom burden.

    Supportive care needs were found in all domains, highest in the psychological domain, and were associated with sociodemographic, clinical and symptom burden characteristics. Adequate and tailored supportive care should be offered especially to highly symptomatic EHE patients.

The rapid review consisted of two elements, the first was a review of guidance published by national and international agencies relating to measures to support those in isolation (due to case status) or quarantine (due to close contact status) during the Covid-19 pandemic. Five categories of support measures were identified in the international guidance, they were Psychological, addiction and safety supports, Essential supplies, Financial aid, Information provision and Enforcement. The second element was a rapid literature review of the effectiveness of measures used to support individuals in isolation or quarantine during any pandemic or epidemic setting, due to respiratory pathogens. A systematic search of published peer-reviewed articles and nonpeer-reviewed pre-prints was undertaken from 1 January 2000 to 26 January 2021. Two Australian publications met the inclusion criteria, both based on data from a survey undertaken during the 2009 H1N1 pandemic. The first reported that 55% of households were fully compliant with quarantine recommendations, and that there was increased compliance reported in households that understood what they were meant to do compared with those who reported that they did not (odds ratio [OR] 2.27, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.35-3.80). The second reported that access to paid sick and or carer's leave did not predict compliance with quarantine recommendations (OR 2.07, 95% CI 0.82-5.23).     We previously explained why acardiac twinning occurs in the first trimester. We raised the question why a sudden demised monochorionic twin beyond the first trimester does not lead to acardiac twinning. We argued that exsanguinated blood from the live twin would strongly increase the demised twins' vascular resistance, preventing its perfusion and acardiac onset. However, our current hypothesis is that perfusion of the demised twin does occur but that it is insufficient for onset of acardiac twinning.

    We analyzed blood pressures and flows in a vascular resistance model of a monochorionic twin pregnancy where one of the fetuses demised. The resistance model consists of a demised twin with a (former) placenta, a live twin and its placenta, and arterioarterial (AA) and venovenous placental anastomoses. We assumed that only twins with a weight of at least 33% of normal survived the first trimester and that exsanguination of more than 50% of its blood volume is fatal for the live twin.

    At 20 weeks, only AA anastomoses with radii ≲1 mm keep the exsanguinated blood volume below 50%. The study research design used a qualitative descriptive exploratory approach that took place in two stages. Five participants attended one focus group followed by the observation of each participant as medications were administered to their assigned patient using the eMAR in eRIC. From the data, three themes and one subtheme were identified. In public health facilities, health workers become state agents in the control of women's bodies. In private health facilities, they become transgressors, who use medical technologies to help women attain termination surreptitiously. Health workers offset risks associated with any involvement in termination, such that pecuniary interests dominate their motivation. Normalized and disciplinary power enact and reproduce unsafe and risky conditions, leading to poor abortion care outcomes. We illustrate the mechanisms of domination and tactics of resistance in abortion care, and expose conditions upon which unsafe and risky outcomes are contingent. Infants must learn to carve events at their joints to best understand who is doing what to whom or whether an object or agent has reached its intended goal. Recent behavioral research demonstrates that infants do not see the world as a movie devoid of meaning, but rather as a series of sub-events that include agents moving in different manners along paths from sources to goals. This research uses behavioral and electrophysiological methods to investigate infants' (10-14 months) attention to disruptions within relatively unfamiliar human action that does not rely on goal-objects to signal attainment (i.e., Olympic figure skating). Infants' visual (Study 1, N = 48) and neurophysiological (Study 2, N = 21) responses to pauses at starting points, endpoints, and within-action locations were recorded. Both measures revealed differential responses to pauses at endpoints relative to pauses elsewhere in the action (i.e., starting point; within-action). The generalized additive model (GAM) is applied, and a nonlinear relationship is examined with penalized spline methods. A sensitivity analysis is conducted for the verification of model results. The results reveal that temperature, relative humidity, and absolute humidity have a significant but negative relationship with the COVID-19 mortality rate. Therefore, it is possible to postulate that cool and dry environmental conditions promote virus transmission, leading to an increase in COVID-19 death counts. The results may facilitate health care policymakers in developing and implementing effective control measures in a timely and efficient way.Identifying sources of nitrate contamination has been a long-term challenge in areas with different land uses. We investigated the biogeochemical processes and quantified the contribution of potential nitrate sources in the Nanyang Basin, the source area of the South to North Water Diversion Project in China. Hydrogeochemical characteristics, the dual-isotope method (δ15N-NO3- and δ18O-NO3-), and the Bayesian mixing model (SIAR) were combined. The results for 160 samples indicated that mean nitrate concentrations of residential area (162.83 mg L-1) and farmland (75.71 mg L-1) were higher compared with those of surface water (16.15 mg L-1) and forest (36.25 mg L-1). Hydrochemical facies and molar ratios of major ions indicated that the natural environment was greatly impacted by anthropogenic activities. Nitrification, ammonium volatilization, and mixing effects were the dominant processes in nitrogen transformation. The contributions of different sources to nitrate contamination were 45.41%, 35.81%, 17.87%, and 0.91% for sewage and manure, soil organic nitrogen, synthetic fertilizer, and atmospheric deposition, respectively. Undeveloped infrastructure and sewage disposal in rural areas were the main causes of nitrate contamination. To fill this gap, the current study proposes an extension of the conventional environmental Kuznets curve by performing a modified version based on remittance inflows in both low- and middle-income countries from 1980 to 2014. Using the novel method of moments quantile regression with fixed effect, the outcomes provide evidence of an inverted N-shaped Kuznets curve for remittances at higher carbon dioxide emitters in lower middle-income countries, proving that remittances allow recipient households to shift toward clean energy pattern (production/consumption). We find U-shaped curve for remittances from the 40th to 80th quantiles in upper middle-income countries along with monotonic negative effect on carbon dioxide emissions at highest quantiles (90th and 95th). No significant effect on environment has been outlined at lower carbon dioxide emitters for all panels. Regarding economic growth, an inverted N-shaped curve has been observed across all quantiles in upper middle-income countries and from lower to middle quantiles in low-income countries. Finally, financial development, as control variable, exerts significant mixed effect on carbon dioxide emissions, swung between positive at all quantiles in low- and upper middle-income countries and negative at lower quantiles in low-income countries. We investigated the biogeochemical processes and quantified the contribution of potential nitrate sources in the Nanyang Basin, the source area of the South to North Water Diversion Project in China. Hydrogeochemical characteristics, the dual-isotope method (δ15N-NO3- and δ18O-NO3-), and the Bayesian mixing model (SIAR) were combined. The results for 160 samples indicated that mean nitrate concentrations of residential area (162.83 mg L-1) and farmland (75.71 mg L-1) were higher compared with those of surface water (16.15 mg L-1) and forest (36.25 mg L-1). Hydrochemical facies and molar ratios of major ions indicated that the natural environment was greatly impacted by anthropogenic activities. Nitrification, ammonium volatilization, and mixing effects were the dominant processes in nitrogen transformation. The contributions of different sources to nitrate contamination were 45.41%, 35.81%, 17.87%, and 0.91% for sewage and manure, soil organic nitrogen, synthetic fertilizer, and atmospheric deposition, respectively. Undeveloped infrastructure and sewage disposal in rural areas were the main causes of nitrate contamination. Our results provide a theoretical basis for the development of measures to guarantee long-term water supply of the South to North Water Diversion Project.Despite the importance of remittance inflows as potential source of incomes for recipient households and one of main contributors to the development process in various developing countries, their environmental effects have been largely neglected in empirical literature. To fill this gap, the current study proposes an extension of the conventional environmental Kuznets curve by performing a modified version based on remittance inflows in both low- and middle-income countries from 1980 to 2014. Using the novel method of moments quantile regression with fixed effect, the outcomes provide evidence of an inverted N-shaped Kuznets curve for remittances at higher carbon dioxide emitters in lower middle-income countries, proving that remittances allow recipient households to shift toward clean energy pattern (production/consumption). We find U-shaped curve for remittances from the 40th to 80th quantiles in upper middle-income countries along with monotonic negative effect on carbon dioxide emissions at highest quantiles (90th and 95th). No significant effect on environment has been outlined at lower carbon dioxide emitters for all panels. Regarding economic growth, an inverted N-shaped curve has been observed across all quantiles in upper middle-income countries and from lower to middle quantiles in low-income countries. Finally, financial development, as control variable, exerts significant mixed effect on carbon dioxide emissions, swung between positive at all quantiles in low- and upper middle-income countries and negative at lower quantiles in low-income countries. Some recommendations were further built in the present study.

A structure-activity relationship study of high-throughput screening hits 1 and 2 led to the discovery of benzimidazole 3d (DS20362725) and acetophenone analogue 5c (DS45500853). The X-ray crystal structure of the ERRα ligand-binding domain in complex with 5c and PGC-1α coactivator peptide revealed conformational changes in the ligand-binding pocket to accommodate 5c and the key interaction between the protein and ligand. Since both analogues avoided PPARγ transcriptional activity, they can be useful tool compounds for investigating biological ERRα functions.Mycophenolic acid (MPA) and its morpholino ester prodrug mycophenolate mofetil (MMF) are widely used in solid organ transplantation.   • We show how the competition between sensing and adaptation can result in a performance peak in Escherichia coli chemotaxis using extensive numerical simulations in a detailed theoretical model. Receptor clustering amplifies the input signal coming from ligand binding which enhances chemotactic efficiency. But large clusters also induce large fluctuations in total activity since the number of clusters goes down. The activity and hence the run-tumble motility now gets controlled by methylation levels which are part of adaptation module rather than ligand binding. This reduces chemotactic efficiency.We address the role of geometrical asymmetry in the occurrence of spin rectification in two-dimensional quantum spin chains subject to two reservoirs at the boundaries, modeled by quantum master equations. We discuss the differences in the rectification for some one-dimensional cases, and present numerical results of the rectification coefficient R for different values of the anisotropy parameter of the XXZ model, and different configurations of boundary drives, including both local and nonlocal dissipators. Our results also show that geometrical asymmetry, along with inhomogeneous magnetic fields, can induce spin current rectification even in the XX model, indicating that the phenomenon of rectification due to geometry may be of general occurrence in quantum spin systems.Neural systems process information in a dynamical regime between silence and chaotic dynamics. This has lead to the criticality hypothesis, which suggests that neural systems reach such a state by self-organizing toward the critical point of a dynamical phase transition. Here, we study a minimal neural network model that exhibits self-organized criticality in the presence of stochastic noise using a rewiring rule which only utilizes local information. For network evolution, incoming links are added to a node or deleted, depending on the node's average activity. The setup allows for generalization to implement translations in an arbitrary direction within the two-dimensional landscapes. The same principles also apply to three-dimensional periodic potentials.We present a free-energy density functional theory (DFT)-based methodology for optical property calculations of warm dense matter to cover a wide range of thermodynamic conditions and photon energies including the entire x-ray range. It uses Mermin-Kohn-Sham density functional theory with exchange-correlation (XC) thermal effects taken into account via a fully temperature dependent generalized gradient approximation XC functional. The methodology incorporates a combination of the ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) snapshotted Kubo-Greenwood optic data with a single atom in simulation cell calculations to close the photon energy gap between the L and K edges and extend the K-edge tail toward many-keV photon energies. This gap arises in the standard scheme due to a prohibitively large number of bands required for the Kubo-Greenwood calculations with AIMD snapshots. Kubo-Greenwood data on snapshots provide an accurate description of optic properties at low photon frequencies slightly beyond the L edge and x-ray-principles opacity table (FPOT) for silicon in a wide range of material densities and temperatures.The Maier-Saupe-Zwanzig model for the nematic phase transitions in liquid crystals is investigated in a diamond hierarchical lattice. The model takes into account a parameter to describe the biaxiality of the microscopic units. Also, a suitably chosen external field is added to the Hamiltonian to allow the determination of critical parameters associated with the nematic phase transitions. Using the transfer-matrix technique, the free energy and its derivatives are obtained in terms of recursion relations between successive generations of the hierarchical lattice. In addition, a real-space renormalization-group approach is developed to obtain the critical parameters of the same model system. Results of both methods are in excellent agreement. There are indications of two continuous phase transitions. One of them corresponds to a uniaxial-isotropic transition, in the class of universality of the three-state Potts model on the diamond hierarchical lattice. The transition between the biaxial and the uniaxial phases is in the universality class of the Ising model on the same lattice.We consider the mutator model with unidirected transitions from the wild type to the mutator type, with different fitness functions for the wild types and mutator types. We calculate both the fraction of mutator types in the population and the surpluses, i.e., the mean number of mutations in the regular part of genomes for the wild type and mutator type, which have never been derived exactly. We identify the phase structure. Beside the mixed (ordinary evolution phase with finite fraction of wild types at large genome length) and the mutator phase (the absolute majority is mutators), we find another new phase as well-it has the mean fitness of the mixed phase but an exponentially small (in genome length) fraction of wild types. We identify the phase transition point and discuss its implications.

  • Longer posterior instrumentation of the thoracolumbar spine, the sacrum, and the pelvis carries a risk for mechanical complications such as non-union and proximal junctional kyphosis (PJK).   • The existing provision of ENT teaching in the undergraduate curriculum is deemed inadequate by medical students, general practitioners and ENT surgeons alike. This study aims to explore the perceptions of a variety of stakeholders on how undergraduate ENT provision can be optimised.

    This study involved semi-structured interviews with seven participants (two medical students, two general practitioners, two ENT surgeons and a curriculum developer). Inductive thematic analysis was used to identify key themes that emerged from the interviews.

    The four emergent themes were evaluation of current ENT provision, barriers to learning and teaching, alternate means of delivery of ENT education, and professional identity development. A number of barriers to learning and teaching in the clinical environment were identified including student-related, teacher-related and environmental factors.

    The existing ENT provision should be re-considered to help students achieve a basic level of competence in managing common ENT conditions. This can be achieved by ENT teaching in additional contexts including general practice, e-learning and simulation workshops.

    Migration is an established risk factor for developing a psychotic disorder in countries with a long history of migration. Less is known for countries with only a recent history of migration. This study aimed to determine the risk for developing a psychotic disorder in migrants to the Republic of Ireland.

    We included all presentations of first-episode psychosis over 8.5 years to the DETECT Early Intervention for psychosis service in the Republic of Ireland (573 individuals aged 18-65, of whom 22% were first-generation migrants). Psychotic disorder diagnosis relied on SCID. The at-risk population was calculated using census data, and negative binomial regression was used to estimate incidence rate ratios.

    The annual crude incidence rate for a first-episode psychotic disorder in the total cohort was 25.62 per 100000 population at risk. Migrants from Africa had a nearly twofold increased risk for developing a psychotic disorder compared to those born in the Republic of Ireland (IRR = 1.83, 95% CI 1.11-3.02, p = 0.02). In contrast, migrants from certain Asian countries had a reduced risk, specifically those from China, India, Philippines, Pakistan, Malaysia, Bangladesh and Hong Kong (aIRR = 0.36, 95% CI 0.16-0.81, p = 0.01).

    Further research into the reasons for this inflated risk in specific migrant groups could produce insights into the aetiology of psychotic disorders. This information should also be used, alongside other data on environmental risk factors that can be determined from census data, to predict the incidence of psychotic disorders and thereby resource services appropriately.

    In this review, we summarize the genetic epidemiology and molecular genetic studies of OCD and obsessive-compulsive symptoms.

    OCD is a heritable, polygenic disorder with contributions from both common and rare variants, including de novo deleterious variations. Multiple studies have provided reliable support for a large additive genetic contribution to liability to OCD, with discrete OCD symptom dimensions having both shared and unique genetic risks. Genome-wide association studies have not produced significant results yet, likely because of small sample sizes, but larger meta-analyses are forthcoming. Both twin and genome-wide studies show that OCD shares genetic risk with its comorbid conditions (e.g. Tourette syndrome and anorexia nervosa).

This study aims to explore the perceptions of a variety of stakeholders on how undergraduate ENT provision can be optimised. This study involved semi-structured interviews with seven participants (two medical students, two general practitioners, two ENT surgeons and a curriculum developer). Inductive thematic analysis was used to identify key themes that emerged from the interviews. The four emergent themes were evaluation of current ENT provision, barriers to learning and teaching, alternate means of delivery of ENT education, and professional identity development. A number of barriers to learning and teaching in the clinical environment were identified including student-related, teacher-related and environmental factors. The existing ENT provision should be re-considered to help students achieve a basic level of competence in managing common ENT conditions. This can be achieved by ENT teaching in additional contexts including general practice, e-learning and simulation workshops. Migration is an established risk factor for developing a psychotic disorder in countries with a long history of migration. Less is known for countries with only a recent history of migration. This study aimed to determine the risk for developing a psychotic disorder in migrants to the Republic of Ireland. We included all presentations of first-episode psychosis over 8.5 years to the DETECT Early Intervention for psychosis service in the Republic of Ireland (573 individuals aged 18-65, of whom 22% were first-generation migrants). Psychotic disorder diagnosis relied on SCID. The at-risk population was calculated using census data, and negative binomial regression was used to estimate incidence rate ratios. The annual crude incidence rate for a first-episode psychotic disorder in the total cohort was 25.62 per 100000 population at risk. Migrants from Africa had a nearly twofold increased risk for developing a psychotic disorder compared to those born in the Republic of Ireland (IRR = 1.83, 95% CI 1.11-3.02, p = 0.02). In contrast, migrants from certain Asian countries had a reduced risk, specifically those from China, India, Philippines, Pakistan, Malaysia, Bangladesh and Hong Kong (aIRR = 0.36, 95% CI 0.16-0.81, p = 0.01). Further research into the reasons for this inflated risk in specific migrant groups could produce insights into the aetiology of psychotic disorders. Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a psychiatric disorder with multiple symptom dimensions (e.g. contamination, symmetry). OCD clusters in families and decades of twin studies clearly demonstrate an important role for genetics in the etiology of the disorder. In this review, we summarize the genetic epidemiology and molecular genetic studies of OCD and obsessive-compulsive symptoms. OCD is a heritable, polygenic disorder with contributions from both common and rare variants, including de novo deleterious variations. Multiple studies have provided reliable support for a large additive genetic contribution to liability to OCD, with discrete OCD symptom dimensions having both shared and unique genetic risks. Genome-wide association studies have not produced significant results yet, likely because of small sample sizes, but larger meta-analyses are forthcoming. Tri-axial accelerometers have been used to remotely describe and identify in situ behaviours of a range of animals without requiring direct observations. Datasets collected from these accelerometers (i.e. acceleration, body position) are often large, requiring development of semi-automated analyses to classify behaviours. Marine fishes exhibit many "burst" behaviours with high amplitude accelerations that are difficult to interpret and differentiate. This has constrained the development of accurate automated techniques to identify different "burst" behaviours occurring naturally, where direct observations are not possible. We trained a random forest machine learning algorithm based on 624 h of accelerometer data from six captive yellowtail kingfish during spawning periods. We identified five distinct behaviours (swim, feed, chafe, escape, and courtship), which were used to train the model based on 58 predictive variables. Overall accuracy of the model was 94%.
