Our objective was to assess racial differences in the 5-year relative survival rates (RSRs) of Cervical Cancer (CerCancer) by stage at diagnosis, between Black and White women, living in Alabama, USA.
Data for 3484 Blacks and 21,059 Whites diagnosed with CerCancer were extracted from the 2004 to 2013 Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) database. We incorporated age groups, CerCancer stages, county, and year of diagnosis to compare the RSR between Blacks and Whites, using SEER*Stat software.
In urban, Black Belt (BB) and other rural counties, Whites diagnosed with localized stage of CerCancer always had better chances of survival because their RSRs were always more than 77%, compared to Blacks. Only exception was in Blacks living in other rural counties, who had a significantly higher RSR of 83.8% (95% Cl, 74.2-90.1). Which was the same as in Whites (83.8% (95% CI 74.5-89.9) living in BBC. Although, in other rural counties, Whites had a slightly lower RSR of 83.7% (95% CI 79.9-86.8%), theit racial differences in the RSRs of CerCancer. Overall, Black women experienced the worst RSRs compared to their White counterparts.
Current standard practice for locally advanced rectal cancer (LARC) entails a multidisciplinary approach that includes preoperative chemoradiotherapy, followed by total mesorectal excision, and then adjuvant chemotherapy. Mechanical thrombectomy was approved by NICE as a treatment for stroke in 2016. However, most of the evidence is from studies conducted during working hours. Only few centres in the UK perform thrombectomies out-of-hours. The Royal Stoke University Hospital (RSUH) has offered thrombectomies over 24 h (24/7) since 2010. The aim of this service review is to compare the outcomes for patients treated in regular working hours to those treated outside normal working hours within this unit.
This retrospective service analysis includes all patients treated with mechanical thrombectomy at RSUH since the start of the service in January 2010 to June 2019. Data on key demographics, timings, procedural complications, and long-term outcomes including death and disability at 90 days were collected. In-hours was defined as the time between 800-1700 h, Monday to Friday; out-of-hours was defined as any time outside this period.
In total, 516 mechanical thrombectomies were performed in this time period; data were available on 501 of these. Successful recanalization (TICI 2b/3) was achieved in 86% of patients. By 90 days 96 (19%) had died and 234 (47%) were functionally independent (modified Rankin Scale score ≤ 2). 211 (42%) of the procedures were performed in-hours and 290 (58%) out-of-hours. Door-to-CT and door-to-groin times were significantly longer out-of-hours than in-hours, but thrombectomy duration was significantly shorter. There were no significant differences in complications and short- and long-term outcomes.

Preconception care has the potential to reduce maternal and child morbidities and mortalities. It is a window of opportunity to timely alter or eliminate risk factors for adverse pregnancy outcomes. However, despite strong evidence on the effectiveness of preconception care in safeguarding maternal and child health, its uptake remains low. Therefore, this study aimed to explore barriers to the uptake of preconception care.
A descriptive qualitative study was conducted in Mana district, Jimma Zone, Oromia region, Southwest Ethiopia from March 02 to April 10, 2019. A purposive sampling approach was used, and 13 key informant interviews (6 in rural and 7 in urban areas) were held with women of different age groups, health extension workers, and health care providers of different professions. In addition, 4 focused group discussions with women of reproductive age groups (two with rural women only and two with urban women only) were conducted. The data were collected by trained experts using semi-structured guides.

The objective of this study was to explore the effects of a 4-week active program based on myofascial release and neurodynamics on trigger point (TrP) examination, pain, and functionality in patients with chronic neck pain.
Randomized controlled trial. A total of 40 patients with chronic neck pain were randomly allocated to an experimental or a control group (n=20). The primary outcome measure was TrP examination. Secondary outcomes were pain, assessed with the Brief Pain Inventory and a visual analogue scale, and functionality, evaluated with the Neck Outcome Score.
A between-group analysis showed significant differences (
<.05) in the percentage of active TrPs in the following muscles suboccipital (50 vs. 92.4% in the right muscle and 37.5 vs. 89.6% in the left muscle), left scalene and levator scapulae. Significant differences (

The efficacy and tolerability of trabectedin in patients with soft tissue sarcoma (STS) have been confirmed by various clinical studies involving lipo- and leiomyosarcomas as well as many other subtypes including translocation-related sarcomas. These data have been obtained from randomized phase II and III clinical trials. Studies in real-world clinical practice are necessary to bridge the efficacy-effectiveness gap and complete the body of evidence. Furthermore, reinforcing clinical experience with data from routine clinical practice allows drug management to be optimized and clinical benefits to be maximized.
The present review provides the most significant data on the efficacy of trabectedin in real-world studies, and the interpretation of real-world experience with trabectedin, in patients with advanced STS.
Trabectedin has demonstrated durable disease control and an adequate safety profile, indicating it to be a suitable long-term treatment drug associated with a good quality of life. Personalized strategies and individualized objectives are the way forward in the management of STS.

These phenotypic changes resemble pathology seen in ageing, and are likely to be mediated by sustained alterations in gene expression, which may be caused by epigenetic changes such as tissue-specific DNA methylation. We aimed to investigate tissue specific changes in DNA methylation that occur in CKD-related CVD. Genome-wide DNA methylation changes were examined in bisulphite converted genomic DNA isolated from the vascular media of CKD and healthy arteries. Methylation-specific PCR was used to validate the array data, and the association between DNA methylation and gene and protein expression was examined. The DNA methylation age was compared to the chronological age in both cases and controls. Three hundred and nineteen differentially methylated regions (DMR) were identified spread across the genome. Pathway analysis revealed that DMRs associated with genes were involved in embryonic and vascular development, and signalling pathways such as TGFβ and FGF. Expression of top differentially methylated gene HOXA5 showed a significant negative correlation with DNA methylation. Interestingly, DNA methylation age and chronological age were highly correlated, but there was no evidence of accelerated age-related DNA methylation in the arteries of CKD patients. In conclusion, we demonstrated that differential DNA methylation in the arterial tissue of CKD patients represents a potential mediator of arterial pathology and may be used to uncover novel pathways in the genesis of CKD-associated complications.

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is known as a chronic neuroinflammatory disorder typified by an immune-mediated demyelination process with ensuing axonal damage and loss. Sinomenine is a natural alkaloid with different therapeutic benefits, including anti-inflammatory and immunosuppressive activities. In this study, possible beneficial effects of sinomenine in an MOG-induced model of MS were determined. Sinomenine was given to MOG35-55-immunized C57BL/6 **** at doses of 25 or 100 mg/kg/day after onset of MS clinical signs till day 30 post-immunization. Analyzed data showed that sinomenine reduces severity of the clinical signs and to some extent decreases tissue level of pro-inflammatory cytokines IL-1β, IL-6, IL-18, TNFα, IL-17A, and increases level of anti-inflammatory IL-10. C57BL/6 J **** were given intraperitoneal injection of zalcitabine (ddC) or saline (control) for 2 weeks, during which the mechanical pain threshold of the **** was detected by von Frey test. Then the L3~L5 spinal segments of the **** were isolated and subsequently used for RNA sequencing (RNA-seq) on the last day of treatment. The aim of this study was to examine the risk of bladder cancer according to the trajectory pattern of amount of smoking among Korean young adult men.
Smoking status was assessed with a standardized questionnaire in the Korean Life Course Health Study (KLCHS). Trajectory analyses were performed among young adult men using seven repeated surveys of cigarette per day (CPD) every two years from 1992 to 2005. The occurrence of bladder cancer was tracked from 2006 to 2016. The Cox proportional models were used to calculate the hazard ratio (HR) (95% confidence interval) of smoking patterns on bladder cancer.
The mean (standard deviation) age of the 161,069 participants was 34.0 (3.9) years, and 2,280,143 person-years (PY) were examined during the follow-up period of 14.2 (median 14.3) years. During this period, 263 new cases of bladder cancer occurred (11.5/100,000 PY). Among the six trajectory groups (low steady, lowering, rise and fall, high steady, rise and sharp fall, and very high steady), there was a higher risk of developing bladder cancer in the all the other groups compared to the low steady group. The highest risk group was the very high steady group, with HR 2.83 (95% CI 1.79-4.49). In addition, the risk of bladder cancer was 2.61 (95% CI 1.50-4.54) in the rise and sharp fall group.

There has been a recent surge of interest in clinical applications of ultrasound, which has revolutionized acute pain management. This review is to summarize the current status of ultrasound utilization in neuraxial anesthesia, the most common type of regional anesthesia.
Ultrasound-assisted and ultrasound-guided neuraxial anesthesia has improved clinical accuracy and patient safety through landmark identification including proper vertebral level and midline, as well as via measurements on neuraxial space. Direct needle or catheter visualization during the entire procedure has not yet been achieved consistently. The recent introduction of ultrasound into neural anesthesia has clinical performance benefits and patient safety implications, with documented improvement on overall efficacy with higher first attempt success rate as well as less needle pass. More controlled studies are needed for the overall impact of ultrasonography in neuraxial anesthesia in obstetric and non-obstetric patients.

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is known as a chronic neuroinflammatory disorder typified by an immune-mediated demyelination process with ensuing axonal damage and loss. Sinomenine is a natural alkaloid with different therapeutic benefits, including anti-inflammatory and immunosuppressive activities. In this study, possible beneficial effects of sinomenine in an MOG-induced model of MS were determined. Sinomenine was given to MOG35-55-immunized C57BL/6 mice at doses of 25 or 100 mg/kg/day after onset of MS clinical signs till day 30 post-immunization. Analyzed data showed that sinomenine reduces severity of the clinical signs and to some extent decreases tissue level of pro-inflammatory cytokines IL-1β, IL-6, IL-18, TNFα, IL-17A, and increases level of anti-inflammatory IL-10. A total of 16 LAD cases were analyzed for MAML2 rearrangement by using fluorescence in situ hybridization, and the clinical, histologic, immunohistochemical, and prognostic features were compared between MAML2 rearrangement-positive and MAML2 rearrangement-negative groups.
Among the 16 cases investigated, 9 harbored a MAML2 rearrangement and were reclassified as Warthin-like MEC. The remaining 7 cases were classified as LADs with 1 nonsebaceous and 6 sebaceous cases. The patients with Warthin-like ****had a wider age range (10-75 years) than the patients with LADs (36-68 years). Histologically, 2 of the 9 Warthin-like **** (22.2%) showed focal invasion, whereas all the LADs had valuation and detection of MAML2 rearrangement can facilitate their differential diagnosis.
Ageing is a biological and psychosocial process related to diseases and mortality. It correlates with changes in DNA methylation (DNAm) in all human tissues. Therefore, epigenetic markers can be used to estimate biological age using DNA methylation profiling across tissues.
We developed a Bioconductor package that allows computation of several existing DNAm adult/childhood and gestational age clocks. Functions to visualize the DNAm age prediction versus chronological age and the correlation between DNAm clocks are also available as well as other features such as missing data imputation of cell types estimates that are required for DNAm age clocks.

The transmission routes of COVID-19 include respiratory transmission, aerosol transmission, and contact transmission. Many dental diagnosis and treatment procedures generate droplets and aerosols, and thus both dental staff and patients are at a high risk of becoming infected and transmitting COVID-19 to others. Shanghai Ninth People's Hospital is a comprehensive hospital with 18 craniofacial-/dental-related departments. During the outbreak of COVID-19 and up to the present date, there have been no confirmed cases of COVID-19 in this hospital thanks to strict protocols for infection prevention and control. In this communication, we would like to share with the prosthodontic community our experience in the prevention and control of COVID-19 in our dental departments and hope it will contribute to the worldwide efforts to overcome the global COVID-19 pandemic.Least Cost Path (LCP) analysis allows a user to define a cost parameter through which cost of movement can be assessed using Geographical Information Systems (GIS). These analyses are commonly used to construct theoretical movement through a landscape, which has been useful for creating hypotheses concerning prehistoric archaeology and landscape genomics. However, LCP analysis is commonly employed without testing the generated LCP(s), complicating its usefulness as a methodological tool. This paper proposes a model for analyzing movement in ArcGIS by using topography data to calculate slope. This slope data is then then used to calculate LCPs based on travel time and kilocalorie expenditure. LCPs were constructed in the Nature Preserve at Binghamton University, a 182-acre area that consists of wetland and mountainous terrain, and a Fitbit® Surge activity monitor was used to test the accuracy of the model's predictions. Paired sample t-tests show a lack of significant difference between calculated and walked time in our analysis (p = .953), suggesting that our model can estimate travel time between two points based solely on slope of the region. Paired sample t-tests also show a lack of significant difference between calculated and observed kilocalorie expenditure (p = .930), suggesting that our model is also capable of estimating kilocalorie expenditure associated with movement between two points. Finally, paired sample t-tests confirm that straight line distances do not reflect real movement through a terrain (p = .009), highlighting the need for alternate measures of movement when analyzing the effects of local landscape on movement. Our current model shows strength in its estimations of travel time and kilocalorie expenditure based on topography of a region-future iterations of the model need to establish the statistical similarity between our model's estimations and recorded values for walking time and kilocalorie expenditure.Understanding how the protozoan protein degradation pathway is regulated could uncover new parasite biology for drug discovery. We found the COP9 signalosome (CSN) conserved in multiple pathogens such as Leishmania, Trypanosoma, Toxoplasma, and used the severe diarrhea-causing Entamoeba histolytica to study its function in medically significant protozoa. We show that CSN is an essential upstream regulator of parasite protein degradation. Genetic disruption of E. histolytica CSN by two distinct approaches inhibited cell proliferation and viability. Both CSN5 knockdown and dominant negative mutation trapped cullin in a neddylated state, disrupting UPS activity and protein degradation. In addition, zinc ditiocarb (ZnDTC), a main metabolite of the inexpensive FDA-approved globally-available drug disulfiram, was active against parasites acting in a COP9-dependent manner. ZnDTC, given as disulfiram-zinc, had oral efficacy in clearing parasites in vivo. Our findings provide insights into the regulation of parasite protein degradation, and supports the significant therapeutic potential of COP9 inhibition.

The tumor microenvironment plays a crucial role in driving the behavior and the aggressiveness of neoplastic cells [...].Single-nucleotide variants (SNVs) are a major form of genetic variation in the human genome that contribute to various disorders. There are two types of SNVs, namely non-synonymous (missense) variants (nsSNVs) and synonymous variants (sSNVs), predominantly involved in RNA processing or gene regulation. sSNVs, unlike missense or nsSNVs, do not alter the amino acid sequences, thereby making challenging candidates for downstream functional studies. Numerous computational methods have been developed to evaluate the clinical impact of nsSNVs, but very few methods are available for understanding the effects of sSNVs. For this analysis, we have downloaded sSNVs from the ClinVar database with various features such as conservation, DNA-RNA, and splicing properties. We performed feature selection and implemented an ensemble random forest (RF) classification algorithm to build a classifier to predict the pathogenicity of the sSNVs. We demonstrate that the ensemble predictor with selected features (20 features) enhances the classification of sSNVs into two categories, pathogenic and benign, with high accuracy (87%), precision (79%), and recall (91%). Furthermore, we used this prediction model to reclassify sSNVs with unknown clinical significance. Finally, the method is very robust and can be used to predict the effect of other unknown sSNVs.Accelerometer-derived estimates of physical activity (PA) and sedentary time have been an important methodological focus. However, little is known about the daily activities among older people during their normal lives. Furthermore, some older individuals would like to be more active, yet experience an unmet PA need, which is defined as the desire to engage in more PA but without the opportunity to act on the desire. This study examined the intensity of daily PA and sedentary behavior measured with accelerometers among older people, and whether PA differs between weekdays and weekends and those with and without the experience of unmet PA need, measured with self-reports. A total of 174 community-dwelling older people (64% female) aged 75 to 90 years used an accelerometer for 7 consecutive days during waking hours, and the results were classified for sedentary behavior (thresholds of 0.0167 g), light activity (0.091 g), and moderate-to-vigorous activity (MVPA, 0.414 g) based on mean amplitude deviation (g). We found that during weekdays, older people engaged slightly more in light activity and had less sedentary time than during weekends. In total, 7.6% of the participants perceived an unmet PA need. The comparison of two different array orientations is analyzed by an end-to-end simulation based on the configuration of the IMR. Simulation results of the different array orientations are presented and analyzed, including the brightness temperature (TB) images, the distribution of the incidence angles in the field of view, the TB radiometric resolutions, the spatial resolutions, the number of measurements in the Earth grid and the expected SSS accuracy. From the simulations we conclude that one of the array orientations has better performance for SSS inversion than the other one. The advantages mainly result in wider swath and better SSS accuracy at the edge of the swath, which then improve the accuracy of the monthly SSS after averaging. The differences of the Sun's effects for two different array orientations are also presented. There are two types of SNVs, namely non-synonymous (missense) variants (nsSNVs) and synonymous variants (sSNVs), predominantly involved in RNA processing or gene regulation. sSNVs, unlike missense or nsSNVs, do not alter the amino acid sequences, thereby making challenging candidates for downstream functional studies. Numerous computational methods have been developed to evaluate the clinical impact of nsSNVs, but very few methods are available for understanding the effects of sSNVs. For this analysis, we have downloaded sSNVs from the ClinVar database with various features such as conservation, DNA-RNA, and splicing properties. We performed feature selection and implemented an ensemble random forest (RF) classification algorithm to build a classifier to predict the pathogenicity of the sSNVs. We demonstrate that the ensemble predictor with selected features (20 features) enhances the classification of sSNVs into two categories, pathogenic and benign, with high accuracy (87%), precision (79%), and recall (91%). Furthermore, we used this prediction model to reclassify sSNVs with unknown clinical significance. The patients with cancer pain require admission for acute inpatient palliative care unit for poorly controlled pain in ambulatory and home care settings, rapid opioid titration, titration of difficult drugs such as methadone, acute pain crisis, pain neuromodulation, and pain interventions. In a palliative home care setting, the cancer pain is usually assessed and managed by nurses and primary physicians with a limited input from the specialist physicians. In patients with cancer at the end of life, the pain should be assessed at least once a day. For opioid-induced respiratory depression, μ receptor antagonists (e.g. naloxone) must be used promptly. The polymers proved highly efficient as recyclable catalysts in the reductive N-alkylation of arylamines under mild conditions and at exceptionally low catalyst loadings. The modular design presented herein can be readily adapted to other finely tuned triarylboranes, enabling wide applications of ROMP-borane polymers as well-defined supported organocatalysts.

The subjects were 101 patients with femoral trochanteric fracture treated by osteosynthesis at our hospital between May 2017 and December 2018 (male, 14; female, 87; mean age, 84.7 years; navigation use group, 55; non-navigation use group, 46). The patients were divided into four groups groups treated by less experienced surgeons with (Navigation-Young surgeon [NY] group, n=35) and without (Manual-Young surgeon [MY] group, n=23) the use of a navigation system; and groups treated by experienced surgeons with (Navigation-Aged surgeon [NA] group, n=20) and without (Manual-Aged surgeon [MA] group, n=23) the use of a navigation system. TAD (mm) and operative time (min) were compared.
The TAD was significantly longer in the MY group than in the NY group. The percentages of patients with 10-20mm TAD were as follows NY group, 94.3%; MY group, 65.2%; NA group, 100%; MA group, 100%. The mean operative time was significantly longer in the NY group than in the MA group, but no significant difference in mean operative time was noted between the NY and MY groups or between the NA and MA groups.

We review the biological significance of the act of lncRNA transcription on DNA processing, highlighting common themes, such as mediating cellular responses to environmental changes. This review combines the background of chromatin signaling with examples in several organisms to clarify when functions of ncDNA can be interpreted through the act of RNAPII transcription.
This study aimed to investigate the effect of transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) associated with vocal therapy in women with behavioral dysphonia.
Seventeen women with behavioral dysphonia were divided into an experimental group (n=8) and a placebo group (n=9). All were submitted to six sessions of vocal therapy, according to the Comprehensive Voice Rehabilitation Program. In the experimental group, therapy was associated with TENS (30 minutes) and in the placebo group, the electrodes were placed and the equipment remained off. The vocal handicap, the voice through the acoustic and auditory perception evaluation, the electrical activity, and the superficial temperature of the suprahyoid and infrahyoid muscles were evaluated. Pre and post data were compared by parametric and nonparametric tests.
There was a decreased in vocal handicap of the placebo group (P=0.002) and a decreased in the percentage of electrical activity of the right (P=0.036) and left (P=0.017) infrahyoid muscles of the experimental group in vowel emission and sequential speech (P=0.036). There was an increase in temperature in the right infrahyoid region in vowel emission (P=0.027) and the temperature difference decreased quantitatively between the supra and infrahyoid regions in the experimental group.

Studies have revealed delayed latencies and reduced amplitudes/phase locking in subcortical responses in older vs. younger listeners, in contrast to enhanced amplitudes of cortical responses in older listeners. Reconstruction accuracy of responses to continuous speech (e.g., cortical envelope tracking) shows over-representation in older listeners. Hearing loss is a factor in many of these studies, even though the listeners would be considered to have clinically normal hearing thresholds. Overall, the ability to draw definitive conclusions regarding these studies is limited by the use of multiple stimulus conditions, small sample sizes, and lack of replication.

Providing a rapid-access ambulatory psychiatry encounter may reduce subsequent emergency department utilization among patients who have not previously received ambulatory psychiatric care.Multi-sectoral coalitions focused on systemic health inequities are commonly promoted as important mechanisms to facilitate changes with lasting impacts on population health. However, the development and implementation of such initiatives present significant challenges, and evaluation results are commonly inconclusive. In an effort to add to the evidence base, we conducted a mixed-methods evaluation of the Claremont Healthy Village Initiative, a multi-sectoral partnership based in the Bronx, New York City. At an organizational level, there were positive outcomes with respect to expanded services, increased access to resources for programs, improved linkages, better coordination, and empowerment of local leaders-all consistent with a systemic, community building approach to change. Direct impacts on community members were more difficult to assess perceived access to health and other services improved, while community violence and poor sanitation, which were also priorities for community members, remained important challenges. Findings suggest significant progress, as well as continued need.

Ga]Ga-PSMA-11 PET findings discordant with the histopathology/composite reference standard in a recently published prospective trial on 635 patients with biochemically recurrent prostate cancer.
Consensus reads were false positive in 20 regions of 17/217 (8%) patients with lesion validation. Majority of the false positive interpretations (13 of 20, 65%) occurred in the context of suspected prostate (bed) relapse (T) after radiotherapy (n = 11); other false positive findings were noted for prostate bed post prostatectomy (T, n = 2), pelvic nodes (N, n = 2), or extra pelvic lesions (M, n = 5). Major sources of false positive findings were PSMA-expressing residual adenocarcinoma with marked post-radiotherapy treatment effect. False negative interpretation occurred in 8 regions of 6/79 (8%) patients with histopathology validation, including prostate (bed) (n = 5), pelvic nodes (n = 1), and extra pelvic lesions (n = 2).
Providing a rapid-access ambulatory psychiatry encounter may reduce subsequent emergency department utilization among patients who have not previously received ambulatory psychiatric care.Multi-sectoral coalitions focused on systemic health inequities are commonly promoted as important mechanisms to facilitate changes with lasting impacts on population health. However, the development and implementation of such initiatives present significant challenges, and evaluation results are commonly inconclusive. In an effort to add to the evidence base, we conducted a mixed-methods evaluation of the Claremont Healthy Village Initiative, a multi-sectoral partnership based in the Bronx, New York City. At an organizational level, there were positive outcomes with respect to expanded services, increased access to resources for programs, improved linkages, better coordination, and empowerment of local leaders-all consistent with a systemic, community building approach to change. Direct impacts on community members were more difficult to assess perceived access to health and other services improved, while community violence and poor sanitation, which were also priorities for community members, remained important challenges. Findings suggest significant progress, as well as continued need. CT signs that are evocative of lung COVID-19 infections have been extensively described, whereas F-FDG-PET signs have not. In both pentylenetetrazole (PTZ)-induced acute seizure and kindling models, ocnt1 gene knockout **** (octn1-/-) showed lower seizure scores compared with wild-type ****. Up-regulation of the epilepsy-related genes, c-fos and Arc, and the neurotrophic factor BDNF following PTZ administration was observed in the hippocampus of wild-type, but not octn1-/- ****. To find the OCTN1 substrate associated with the seizure, untargeted metabolomics analysis using liquid chromatography-quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry was conducted on extracts from the hippocampus, frontal cortex, and plasma of both strains, leading to the identification of a plant alkaloid homostachydrine as a compound present in a lower concentration in octn1-/- ****. OCTN1-mediated uptake of deuterium-labeled homostachydrine was confirmed in OCTN1-transfected HEK293 cells, suggesting that this compound is a substrate of OCTN1. Homostachydrine administration increased PTZ-induced acute seizure scores and the expression of Arc in the hippocampus and that of Arc, Egr1, and BDNF in the frontal cortex. Conversely, administration of the OCTN1 substrate/inhibitor ERGO inhibited PTZ-induced kindling and reduced the plasma homostachydrine concentration. Thus, these results suggest that OCTN1 is at least partially associated with PTZ-induced seizures, which is potentially deteriorated by treatment with homostachydrine, a newly identified food-derived OCTN1 substrate.
Food deserts are neighborhoods with low access to healthy foods and are associated with poor health metrics. We investigated association of food desert residence and cancer outcomes.
In this population-based study, data from the 2000-2012 California Cancer Registry was used to identify patients with stage II/III breast or colorectal cancer. Patient residence at time of diagnosis was linked by census tract to food desert using the USDA Food Access Research Atlas. Treatment and outcomes were compared by food desert residential status.
Among 64,987 female breast cancer patients identified, 66.8% were < 65years old, and 5.7% resided in food deserts. Five-year survival for food desert residents was 78% compared with 80% for non-desert residents (p < 0.0001). Among 48,666 colorectal cancer patients identified, 50.4% were female, 39% were > 65years old, and 6.4% resided in food deserts. Five-year survival for food desert residents was 60% compared with 64% for non-desert residents (p < 0.001). Living in food deserts was significantly associated with diabetes, tobacco use, poor insurance coverage, and low socioeconomic status (p < 0.05) for both cancers. There was no significant difference in rates of surgery or chemotherapy by food desert residential status for either diagnosis. Multivariable analyses showed that food desert residence was associated with highermortality.

A retrospective review was performed for all patients who underwent complete cytoreduction and intraperitoneal chemotherapy from 2010 to 2017, examining patient and tumor characteristics, overall and recurrence-free survival, recurrence patterns, and tumor mutational profiles.
Ninety-three patients were included in the study 49 (53%) with a right-sided and 44 (47%) with a left-sided primary tumor. Patients with a right-sided tumor had significantly shorter recurrence-free survival (median, 6.3months; 95% CI, 4.7-8.1months vs 12.3months; 95% CI, 3.6-21.7months; P = 0.02) and overall survival (median, 36.6months; 95% CI, 26.4-46.9months vs 83.3months; 95% CI 44.2-122.4months; P = 0.03). BRAF and KRAS mutations were more frequent in right-sided tumors, and APC and TP53 mutations were more frequent in left-sided tumors, which were more chromosomally instable. BRAF mutations were associated with early recurrence.
