Given that gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms are a prominent extrapulmonary manifestation of COVID-19, we investigated intestinal infection with SARS-CoV-2, its effect on pathogenesis, and clinical significance.
Human intestinal biopsy tissues were obtained from patients with COVID-19 (n= 19) and uninfected control individuals (n= 10) for microscopic examination, cytometry by time of flight analyses, and RNA sequencing. Additionally, disease severity and mortality were examined in patients with and without GI symptoms in 2 large, independent cohorts of hospitalized patients in the United States (N= 634) and Europe (N= 287) using multivariate logistic regressions.
COVID-19 case patients and control individuals in the biopsy cohort were comparable for age, sex, rates of hospitalization, and relevant comorbid conditions. SARS-CoV-2 was detected in small intestinal epithelial cells by immunofluorescence staining or electron microscopy in 15 of 17 patients studied. High-dimensional analyses of GI tissues showedrallel, reduced mortality in patients with COVID-19 presenting with GI symptoms was observed. A potential role of the GI tract in attenuating SARS-CoV-2-associated inflammation needs to be further examined.

The known human-infecting coronaviruses; severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus (SARS-CoV), Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus (MERS-CoV), novel SARS-CoV-2, human coronavirus (HCoV)-NL63, HCoV-229E, HCoV-OC43 and HKU1 cause mild to severe respiratory infections. The viral diseases induced by mammalian and avian viruses from Coronaviridae family pose significant economic and public health burdens. Due to increasing reports of viral resistance, co-infections and the emergence of viral epidemics such as COVID-19, available antiviral drugs show low or no efficacy, and the production of new treatments or vaccines are also challenging. Therefore, demand for the development of novel antivirals has considerably increased. In recent years, antiviral peptides have generated increasing interest as they are from natural and computational sources, are highly specific and effective, and possess the broad-spectrum activity with minimum side effects. Here, we have made an effort to compile and review the antiviral peptides with activity against Coronaviridae family viruses. They were divided into different categories according to their action mechanisms, including binding/attachment inhibitors, fusion and entry inhibitors, viral enzyme inhibitors, replication inhibitors and the peptides with direct and indirect effects on the viruses. Reported studies suggest optimism with regard to the design and production of therapeutically promising antiviral drugs. This review aims to summarize data relating to antiviral peptides particularly with respect to their applicability for development as novel treatments.
Primary rhesus monkey kidney cells (RhMK) can be used for the detection of respiratory viruses, including influenza and parainfluenza. The human colon adeno-carcinoma cell line, CACO-2, has been previously used for the growth of multiple influenza viruses, including seasonal, novel and avian lineages.
We compared CACO-2, Madin-Darby Canine Kidney (****), and RhMK cells for the isolation of viruses from patients presenting with influenza like-illness (ILI).
Nasopharyngeal specimens from patients with ILI in primary care settings were processed for conventional viral culture in ****, RhMK, and CACO-2. Cells were examined microscopically for cytopathic effect (CPE) and confirmatory testing included immunofluorescent antigen (IFA) detection and real-time RT-PCR. Additionally, 16 specimens positive for respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) by PCR were inoculated on CACO-2 cells. Statistical analysis was done using Chi-square test with IBM Statistical Program.
Of 1031 respiratory specimens inoculated, viruses watory virus culture isolation rate in CACO-2 cells was significantly higher than that in RhMK or **** cells (p less then 0.05). CACO-2 cells also supported the growth of some viruses that did not grow in either RhMK or **** cells. Except for RSV, CACO-2 cells provide a worthwhile addition to culture algorithms for respiratory specimens.

To determine the prevalence of non-communicable disease (NCD) risk factors among nurses and para-health professionals (PHPs) working at primary healthcare centres in Bangladesh. In addition to this, we also investigated the association of these risk factors with the categories of health professions.
Cross-sectional study and the sampling technique was a census.
The study site was a medical university of Bangladesh where the study population was recruited by NCD Control Programme of Directorate General of Health Services to participate in a 3-day training session from November 2017 to May 2018.
A total of 1942 government-employed senior staff nurses (SSNs) and PHPs working at Upazila Health Complexes.
The data were collected using a modified STEPwise approach to NCD risk factors surveillance questionnaire of the World Health Organisation (V.3.2). The prevalence of NCD risk factors was presented descriptively and the χ² test was used to determine the association between NCD risk factors distribution arisk-reduction strategy to minimise the possibility of chronic illness among them.
The aim of the study was to establish the technical capacities needed to deliver the WHO African Region's primary eye care package in primary healthcare facilities.
A two-round Delphi exercise was used to obtain expert consensus on the technical complexity of each component of the package and the technical capacities needed to deliver them using Gericke's framework of technical feasibility. The panel comprised nine eyecare experts in primary eyecare in sub-Saharan Africa. In each round panel members used a 4-point Likert scale to indicate their level of agreement. Consensus was predefined as ≥70% agreement on each statement. For round 1, statements on technical complexity were identified through a literature search of primary eyecare in sub-Saharan Africa from January 1980 to April 2018. Statements for which consensus was achieved were included in round 2, and the technical capacities were agreed.
Technical complexity statements were classified into four broad categories intervention characteristics, delivery characteristics, government capacity requirements and usage characteristics. 34 of the 38 (89%) statements on health promotion and 40 of the 43 (93%) statements on facility case management were considered necessary technical capacities for implementation.

We used the medical records-linkage system of the Rochester Epidemiology Project (REP; http//www.rochesterproject.org) to identify all residents of Olmsted County, Minnesota who reached one or more birthdays between 1 January 2005 and 31 December 2014 (10 years).
For each person, we obtained the count of chronic conditions (out of 20 conditions) present on each birthday by extracting all of the diagnostic codes received in the 5 years before the index birthday from the electronic indexes of the REP. To compare each person's count to peers of same age, the counts were transformed into percentiles of the total population and displayed graphically across age by sex, race and ethnicity. In addition, quintiles 1, 2, 4 and 5 were compared with n younger persons and in women.
To identify mentors' perspectives on strengths and weaknesses of the Training, Support and Access Model for Maternal, Newborn and Child Health (TSAM-****) clinical mentorship programme in Rwandan district hospitals. Understanding the perspectives of mentors involved in this programme can aid in the improvement of its implementation.
The study used a qualitative approach with in-depth interviews.

These structures are highlighted as the strengths of the mentoring programme and they play a significant role in the successful implementation of the mentorship model. Inconsistency of mentoring activities and lack of resources emerged as major weaknesses of the clinical mentorship programme which could hinder the effectiveness of the mentoring scheme.
The findings of this study highlight the strengths and weaknesses perceived by mentors of the TSAM-**** clinical mentorship programme, providing insights that can be used to improve its implementation. The study represents unique TSAM-**** structural settings, but its findings shed light on Rwandan health system issues that need to be further addressed to ensure better quality of care for mothers, newborns and children.

At least one pathogen could be detected in 175 out of 624 cats (28%) via indirect and/or direct detection methods. Four percent had positive test results for more than one pathogen. Adolescence as one of the most challenging periods of humans' growth is accompanied with major physical, behavioural, social-emotional, and neuroendocrine changes. Early maturation and eating disorders (EDs) have been reported to be associated with adverse health conditions. Therefore, the present study was conducted to assess age of onset of menarche (AM), EDs, and their possible relationships with weight, body mass index (BMI), waist circumference (WC), and socioeconomic status (SES) in the Iranian female adolescents.
In the study population, mean ± standard deviation (SD) of AM was 12.95 ± 1.14years. Inverse significant relationships were found between weight and AM, also BMI and AM (p < 0.05). There was a negative association between weight and anorexia nervosa (AN), BMI and AN, also WC and AN (p < 0.001). A significant positive correlation was found between SES and AM, also EDs and AM (p < 0.05) then between weight and bulimia nervosa (BN) & binge-eating disorder (BED), BMI and BN & BED, also WC and BD & BED (p < 0.001). Our results also revealed that AM in mothers had a significant positive relationship with AM in their daughters (p < 0.001, r = 0.34).

Sleep disorders are common in people with intellectual disability (ID) and autism, with growing evidence of diverse sleep profiles across ID associated genetic syndromes. Documenting the prevalence and profile of specific sleep disorders in syndromes will quantify syndrome-driven 'risk', inform prognosis and enhance understanding of aetiology of sleep disorders.
Following PRISMA guidelines for meta-analysis, we searched Ovid PsycINFO, Ovid MEDLINE, Ovid Embase,Web of Science and PubMed Central with use of syndrome-specific keywords and 60 sleep-related search terms. We screened and extracted papers that reported sleep disorder prevalence data for five or more individuals within a genetic syndrome, and applied quality criteria to produce a quality-effects prevalence model of six types of sleep disorder across nineteen syndromes. Relative risk estimates were calculated for the prevalence of each sleep disorder in each syndrome.

Cardiovascular health (CVH) has been defined by the American Heart Association (AHA) as the presence of the "Life's Simple 7" ideal lifestyle and clinical factors. CVH is known to predict longevity and freedom from cardiovascular disease, the leading cause of death for women in the United States. DNA methylation markers of aging have been aggregated into a composite epigenetic age score, which is associated with cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. However, it is unknown whether poor CVH is associated with acceleration of aging as measured by DNA methylation markers in epigenetic age.
We performed a cross-sectional analysis of racially/ethnically diverse post-menopausal women enrolled in the Women's Health Initiative cohort recruited between 1993 and 1998. In addition, immunohistochemistry was performed for programmed cell death-ligand 1 (PD-L1), cluster of differentiation 8 (CD8), and forkhead box protein P3 (Foxp3). Seventy-four patients with ICC were classified into normal weight (BMI less then 25.0 kg/m2, n = 48) and obesity groups (BMI ≥ 25.0 kg/m2, n = 26), respectively. Serum carbohydrate antigen 19-9 levels were higher in the obesity group than in the normal weight group. Tumor size and the intrahepatic metastasis rate were significantly larger in the obesity group. Patients in the obesity group had significantly worse prognoses than those in the normal weight group. Moreover, BMI displayed a positive correlation with SUVmax on 18F-FDG PET/CT (n = 46, r = 0.5152). Patients with high 18F-FDG uptake had a significantly higher rate of PD-L1 expression, lower CD8 + tumor-infiltrating lymphocyte (TIL) counts, and higher Foxp3 + TIL counts. We subsequently tested 200 patients using the OrientGene COVID-19 IgG/IgM Rapid Test Cassette and find a sensitivity of 74% in the early infection period (day 5-9 post symptom onset), with 100% sensitivity not seen until day 13, demonstrating inferiority to PCR testing in the infectious period. Negative rate was 96%, but in validating the serological tests uncovered potential false-negatives from PCR testing late-presenting cases. A positive predictive value (PPV) of 37% in the general population precludes any use for general screening. Where a case definition is applied however, the PPV is substantially improved (95.4%), supporting use of serology testing in carefully targeted, high-risk populations. This study statistically analyzed survey data to examine the relationship between fulfillment of psychological needs of 223 Chinese sojourners in the United States and their online self-presentation strategies on Chinese and American social media. The results showed that the combined use of proactive and defensive self-presentation strategies on Chinese social media instead of American social media were more effective to fulfill the sojourners' need for autonomy. Moreover, presentation strategies that helped to meet the sojourners' need for relatedness were significantly different between Chinese and American social media. Specifically, a proactive strategy was more effective to meet sojourners' need for relatedness on Chinese social media, while a defensive strategy was more effective to fulfill their need for relatedness on American social media.Teaching mathematics and improving mathematics competence are pending subjects within our educational system. Here, we investigated the mechanisms of this cognitive performance decline using a dual-task paradigm in a simulated driving environment, and using drift-diffusion modeling, examined if the two tasks are processed in a serial or a parallel manner. Participants performed a lane change task, along with an image discrimination task. We systematically varied the time difference between the onset of the two tasks (Stimulus Onset Asynchrony, SOA) and measured its effect on the amount of dual-task interference. Results showed that the reaction times (RTs) of the two tasks in the dual-task condition were higher than those in the single-task condition. SOA influenced the RTs of both tasks when they were presented second and the RTs of the image discrimination task when it was presented first. Results of drift-diffusion modeling indicated that dual-task performance affects both the rate of evidence accumulation and the delays outside the evidence accumulation period. These results suggest that a hybrid model containing features of both parallel and serial processing best accounts for the results. To this end, we suggest that researchers should describe their data on three documentation levels reflecting researchers' central decisions during the research process. In particular, these levels describe researchers' decisions on the concrete research design that is most suitable to address the corresponding research question, its operationalization as well as a precise description of the subsequent data collection and analysis process. Accordingly, the first documentation level represents, for instance, researchers' decision on the concrete hypotheses, inclusion/exclusion criteria and the number of measurement points as well as a conceptual presentation of all substantial variables included in the design. This study statistically analyzed survey data to examine the relationship between fulfillment of psychological needs of 223 Chinese sojourners in the United States and their online self-presentation strategies on Chinese and American social media. The results showed that the combined use of proactive and defensive self-presentation strategies on Chinese social media instead of American social media were more effective to fulfill the sojourners' need for autonomy. Moreover, presentation strategies that helped to meet the sojourners' need for relatedness were significantly different between Chinese and American social media. Specifically, a proactive strategy was more effective to meet sojourners' need for relatedness on Chinese social media, while a defensive strategy was more effective to fulfill their need for relatedness on American social media.Teaching mathematics and improving mathematics competence are pending subjects within our educational system. The PEIM (Programa Evolutivo Instruccional para Matemáticas), a constructivist intervention program for the improvement of mathematical performance, affects the different agents involved in math learning, guaranteeing a significant improvement in students' performance. Here, we investigated the mechanisms of this cognitive performance decline using a dual-task paradigm in a simulated driving environment, and using drift-diffusion modeling, examined if the two tasks are processed in a serial or a parallel manner. Participants performed a lane change task, along with an image discrimination task. We systematically varied the time difference between the onset of the two tasks (Stimulus Onset Asynchrony, SOA) and measured its effect on the amount of dual-task interference. Results showed that the reaction times (RTs) of the two tasks in the dual-task condition were higher than those in the single-task condition. SOA influenced the RTs of both tasks when they were presented second and the RTs of the image discrimination task when it was presented first. Results of drift-diffusion modeling indicated that dual-task performance affects both the rate of evidence accumulation and the delays outside the evidence accumulation period. These results suggest that a hybrid model containing features of both parallel and serial processing best accounts for the results. Industrial solid waste (ISW) poses a huge potential threat to human health and the environment. To prevent pollution at its source, it is necessary to analyze the socioeconomic drivers and identify the key supply chains that cause changes in ISW generation. In this study, based on monetary input-output tables (MIOTs) in China from 2011 to 2015, structural decomposition analysis (SDA) was used to study the influence of socioeconomic drivers on common industrial solid waste (CISW) and hazardous waste (HW) generation. Structural path decomposition (SPD) was used to further trace the effects of drivers at the supply chain level and obtain more meaningful results for policy formulation. Economic expansion was found to play the most crucial role in the increase in total ISW generation while the reduction of generation intensity effectively slowed the growth trend. From the final demand perspective, fixed capital formation contributed the most to ISW generation growth, accounting for 65.05% of the total final demand effect. Construction was the primary trigger. For CISW, the supply chain with the greatest overall influence was "metal ore mining industry → fixed capital formation" (including intermediate consumption of metal smelting, general and special machinery, and construction), reflecting how fixed capital formation indirectly affected the metal ore mining industry. The supply chain with the greatest influence on HW generation was "paper industry → exports." The PW and BW WMs before and after modification were characterized by SEM, EDX, XRD, ATR-FTIR, TGA, contact angle and zeta potential. After modification, cellulose I in cellulose crystal structures of raw WM transformed to cellulose II and the contents of carboxylic groups for PW and BW were enhanced to make the hydrophilicity of WM surface increased. Compared with modified PW WMs, particles formed on the channel walls of modified BW WMs containing vessel pits to make more carboxylic groups introduced. The TC adsorption breakthrough curves showed that the 6 wt% alkali- CA modified BW had an effective filtration volume of 1968 bed volume (BV) compared with the 4 wt% alkali-CA modified PW of 1205 BV as the influent TC and breakthrough point were chosen at 2 and 0.5 mg/L, respectively. At low pH, TC complex with WM surfaces through Lewis acid-base interaction. Zwitterionic TC was shown to favor adsorption onto WM via hydrogen bonding at pH of around 5. The chemical structure of synthesized prodrugs was characterized and confirmed by FT-IR, NMR and mass spectral studies. Based on the results of in vitro cytotoxic studies, all of the synthesized prodrugs led to decrease in the IC50 in 72 h on U87 cancer cell line and the best result was observed for dihexyl methotrexate (MTX-DH) in comparison with free MTX, which led to decrease the IC50 amount up to 6 folds. In addition, in vivo toxicity on Artemia salina (A. salina) showed that the lipophilic MTX prodrugs have been able to partially mask the toxic profile of free MTX, at the same concentrations. These findings were also in compliance with hemolysis assay results, which confirm that the conjugates has not made the drug more toxic. Furthermore, in vivo study in rat model, was employed to determine the simultaneous drug concentration in brain and plasma. According to the obtained results, the brain-to-plasma concentration ratios (Kp values) of MTX-DH and dioctyl methotrexate (MTX-DO) groups were significantly higher compared with free MTX. Moreover, the uptake clearance of MTX by brain parenchyma increased significantly (3.85 and 9.08-time increased for MTX-DH and MTX-DO prodrugs, respectively). Patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) have a high burden of cardiovascular disease (CVD) of multifactorial origin. The aim of this systematic review is to analyze the role of the interferon I (IFN-I) signature and fibroblast growth factor-23 (FGF-23) in patients with SLE or cutaneous lupus erythematosus (CLE) herein.
We conducted a systematic literature search in PubMed and Scopus using keywords for major adverse cardiovascular events (****) and intermediate outcomes (endothelial dysfunction, subclinical atherosclerosis, platelet activation) associated with IFN-I or FGF-23 in patients with SLE and CLE.
4745 citations were screened, of which 12 studies were included. IFN-I was associated with **** in two third of the studies and the association was strongest for cardiac events. An association of IFN-I was found in all studies investigating impaired vascular function, but only in 50% (respectively 40%) of reports examining the relation of IFN-I and platelet activation (respectively subclinical atherosclerosis).

Based on this evidence, the GrAID consists of lean meat, eggs, fish, plain dairy (such as milk, yoghurt, kefir and hard cheeses), fruit, vegetables, legumes, wheat, coffee, tea and honey. Red meat, other dairy products and sugar should be limited. Canned and processed foods, alcohol and sweetened beverages should be avoided. This comprehensive review focuses on anti-inflammatory properties of foods providing IBD patients with the best evidence on which foods they should eat or avoid to reduce flares. Despite the inherent properties limiting its bioactivities, polysaccharides from natural sources increasingly gain research attention given their position as a functional ingredient. Improving the functionality and bioactivity of polysaccharides have been established through degradation of their molecular integrity. In this critical synopsis; we articulate the effects of H2O2 on the degradation of polysaccharides from natural sources. Specifically, the synopsis focused on free radical formation/production, polysaccharide degradation processes with H2O2, the effects of polysaccharide degradation on the structural characteristics; physicochemical properties; and bioactivities; in addition to the antioxidant capability. The degradation mechanisms involving polysaccharide's antioxidative property; with some examples and their respective sources are briefly summarised.
Colorectal cancer is among the most prevalent cancer entities worldwide, with every second patient developing liver metastases during their illness. For local treatment of liver metastases, a surgical approach as well as ablative treatment options, such as microwave ablation (MWA) and radiofrequency ablation (RFA), are available. The aim of this study is to evaluate the cost-effectiveness of RFA, MWA and surgery in the treatment of liver metastases of oligometastatic colorectal cancer (omCRC) that are amenable for all investigated treatment modalities.
A decision analysis based on a Markov model assessed lifetime costs and quality-adjusted life years (QALY) related to the treatment strategies RFA, MWA and surgical resection. Input parameters were based on the best available and most recent evidence. Probabilistic sensitivity analyses (PSA) were performed with Monte Carlo simulations to evaluate model robustness. The percentage of cost-effective iterations was determined for different willingness-to-pay (WTP) thresholds.
The base-case analysis showed that surgery led to higher long-term costs compared to RFA and MWA (USD 41,848 vs. USD 36,937 vs. https://www.selleckchem.com/products/myf-01-37.html USD 35,234), while providing better long-term outcomes than RFA, yet slightly lower than MWA (6.80 vs. 6.30 vs. 6.95 QALYs for surgery, RFA and MWA, respectively). The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of fluoride emissions by an aluminum smelter on three plant species endemics to Brazil, located at Parque Estadual do Itacolomi (PEI). The monitored species were Byrsonima variabilis (Malpighiaceae), Myrceugenia alpigena (Myrtaceae), and Eremanthus erythropappus (Asteraceae), which were monitored during 9 months using passive biomonitoring at five different locations with different distances from the smelter. The monitored species did not show macroscopic phytotoxicity damage to fluoride; however, they did show microscopic damage. The species closer to the smelter presented more severe anatomic damages, such as rupture of cell walls, protoplast retraction, and trichome alterations. Damaged stomatal ledges, flaking epicuticular wax, and damages to trichomes were observed. M. alpigena showed a higher accumulation of fluoride than the other species at all monitored sites. The test for cell death with Evans Blue was positive for the three studied species. PGEs were also investigated in dry deposition particles and deposited dust sampled in the tunnel. Pd occurred at the highest levels in both PM10 and dry deposition samples, followed by Rh and Pt. Maximum concentrations in PM10 fraction were 114 pg m-3 for Pd, 14.3 pg m-3 for Rh and 3.3 pg m-3 for Pt in the urban site (Nantes) and 91 pg m-3 for Pd and 16 pg m-3 for Rh in the tunnel (Paris). The elements quantified in PM2.5 and PM10 filters were subjected to a principal component analysis, which showed the presence of three emission sources in the study area (soil, vehicular traffic and industry) in both fractions. It was not possible to conduct this analysis with the elements obtained from the extraction of T. capillaris leaves, since most of them are solubilised at the moment of extraction. Biomonitoring with T. capillaris might be used to estimate the concentration of particulate matter in large areas or in remote sites with no electrical power supply to run active samplers. The effects of different conditions including microalgal biomass dose, pH, temperature, and salinity on the oil behavior were investigated. A two-level factorial analysis was also used to further explore the interactions of these conditions. The microalgal biomass was found to be the most influential parameter for the residual crude oil on sand. Higher microalgal biomass dose resulted in less residual oil on sand. The remaining oil decreased with increasing solution pH from 4 to 7, and an increase of remaining oil was observed when the pH was further increased above 7. In addition, temperature and salinity could affect the removal of crude oil in the presence of microalgal biomass. Increasing the temperature could result in less residual oil on sand and there was higher oil removal at the high salinity. The effects of microalgal biomass on the oil behavior could also be impacted by environmental conditions. The results of this study indicate that the presence of algae in the oiled shoreline can be considered in the comprehensive evaluation of spill risk and prediction of oil fate.
