Using three-dimensional (3D) cellular morphology extracted via confocal microscopy, we demonstrate that the voltage-dependent changes in the membrane tension induced by ionic repulsion can explain the magnitude, time course, and spatial features of the phase imaging.   • Conclusions Deficits in early sensory processing, as measured by the P1 ERP component, are present in adult ADHD patients and are associated with symptom severity. These findings are suggestive of bottom-up cognitive deficits in ADHD driven by impairments in early visual processing, and provide evidence that sensory processing problems are present at the neurophysiological level in this population.Background Castleman's disease (CD) is a rare non-clonal lymphadenopathy. Application of video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATs) in intrathoracic unicentric Castleman's disease (UCD) is rarely reported. This study is aimed to clarify the role of VATs for diagnosis and treatment in intrathoracic UCD. Methods The authors reviewed and identified patients who had received a histologic diagnosis of CD through VATs at our hospital from January2010 to June 2018. Clinical and radiologic variables, histopathology, type of approach, complications, and long-term effect were analyzed to evaluate the safety and efficacy of VATs. Results A total of 10 patients were included in this study, with 8 hyaline vascular type and 2 plasma cell type. The mean maximum diameter of the lesions was 4.66 cm. Nine cases underwent complete surgical excision by VATs, and 1 case was converted to thoracotomy. All patients had no postoperative complications. With a median follow-up of 5 years (range 1-9 years), no tumor recurrence was found in 9 patients receiving complete tumor resection, and 1 patient with incomplete tumor resection remained symptom free without clinical or radiographic progression. Conclusions VATs is an alternative, minimally invasive technique for the diagnosis and treatment in patients with intrathoracic UCD.Background Poor persistence with glaucoma therapy can lead to disease progression and subsequent blindness. The primary endpoint was duration of drug persistence among glaucoma patients with and without the use of fixed combination drugs in the year following initiation of second-line combination treatment. Results Of 1403 patients included in the analysis, 364 (25.94%) received fixed combination drugs and 1039 (74.06%) received unfixed combination drugs as second-line treatment. Baseline characteristics were genence between glaucoma patients receiving unfixed combination drugs compared with fixed combination drugs. Patients on PGA showed greater persistence rates compared with other treatments.Background There is some anecdotal evidence that anxiety about the responsibility of an intern influences rural future intentions. Additionally, research has shown that urban interns have reported that they are worried about being 'forced' to work in non-metropolitan hospitals in their first year after graduation. This study sought to explore rural medical students' perceptions and expectations of a rural internship and how local health services and/or their medical school can prepare them best for a rural intern position. Methods Four focus groups were conducted with 62 final-year medical students upon completion of a 12-month rural clinical school placement. Focus groups were audio-recorded and transcribed verbatim for thematic analysis to identify key themes. Results Most students have high levels of anxiety around starting work but they acknowledge that this may be exaggerated. They believe that in rural areas they get higher quality supervisory support than in urban hospitals as people know you better, whereas in the city you are more anonymous. However, the level of responsibility placed on rural interns was considered to be a double-edged sword. While rural interns were allowed to do more than be a 'paper-pusher' this level of responsibility means they are more accountable. The majority felt that doing your first training years in a metropolitan hospital can be crucial to getting on a training program in your chosen speciality. Conclusions There appears to be a relatively high level of anxiety about rural internships amongst final-year medical students. Students need more targeted information around specialisation, particularly around regional training hubs, if we want to achieve higher levels of interns choosing a rural career path.Background As the mortality attributable to dementia-related diseases in the United States escalates, providing quality and equitable end-of-life care for dementia patients across care settings has become a major public health challenge. Previous research suggests that place of death may be an indicator of quality of end-of-life care. This study aims to examine the geographical variations and temporal trends in place of death of dementia decedents in the US and the relationships between place of death of dementia decedents and broad structural determinants. Methods Using nationwide death certificates between 2000 and 2014, we described the changes in place of death of dementia decedents across states and over time. Chi-square test for trend in proportions was used to test significant linear trend in the proportion of dementia decedents at difference places. State fixed effects models were estimated to assess the relationships between the proportion of dementia decedents at difference places and state-level facommunity based health services may help dementia patients to die at their homes. As home becomes an increasingly common place of death of dementia patients, it is critical to monitor the quality of end-of-life care at this setting.Background Hypertension may be influenced by multiple factors, including social and individual determinants. Regional and individual economic disparity in China is closely associated with such factors that may give rise to diverse health outcomes. This study examines the relationship between regional economic development, household income, gender and hypertension prevalence in China. Methods This study utilized data from the China Kadoorie Biobank (CKB), a population-based study on half a million Chinese adults from 10 geographically distinct regions. Hypertension was identified by a measured systolic blood pressure/diastolic blood pressure ≥ 140/90 mmHg or receiving treatment. Regional economic development was inferred from GDP per capita at the time of the study. A logistic regression based method was used in calculating the prevalence of hypertension in different household income, regional economic development, and gender groups, adjusting for demographic, social-economic and lifestyle factors. Results The prevalence of hypertension was the lowest in the medium GDP per capita areas in both male (31.

The lack of progress in treating NS is impacted by the lack of known pathophysiology or associated quantitative biomarkers, which could provide tools for research. This current analysis investigated potential associations between NS and an extensive battery of behavioral and brain-based biomarkers in 932 psychosis probands from the B-SNIP database. The current analyses examined associations between PANSS-defined NS and (1) cognition, (2) pro-/anti-saccades, (3) evoked and resting-state electroencephalography (EEG), (4) resting-state fMRI, and (5) tractography. Canonical correlation analyses yielded symptom-biomarker constructs separately for each biomarker modality. Biomarker modalities were integrated using canonical discriminant analysis to summarize the symptom-biomarker relationships into a "biomarker signature" for NS. Finally, distinct biomarker profiles for 2 NS domains ("diminished expression" vs "avolition/apathy") were computed using step-wise linear regression. NS were associated with cognitive impairment, diminished EEG response amplitudes, deviant resting-state activity, and oculomotor abnormalities. While a connection between NS and poor cognition has been established, association to neurophysiology is novel, suggesting directions for future mechanistic studies. Each biomarker modality was related to NS in distinct and complex ways, giving NS a rich, interconnected fingerprint and suggesting that any one biomarker modality may not adequately capture the full spectrum of symptomology. © The Author(s) 2020. OBJECTIVE The objectives of this study are to (1) describe the development of a functional measure, the Bellarmine Norton Assessment Tool (BNAT), for individuals with cancer; and (2) assess the relationship between the BNAT and the Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group (ECOG) Performance Status, a commonly used classification system by oncologists. DESIGN This was a prospective cohort correlation study. METHODS The BNAT encompasses 1 self-reported physical activity question and 4 objective tests 2-Minute Step Test, 30-Second Sit to Stand, Timed Arm Curl, and Timed Up and Go. The BNAT score and its components were compared with ECOG Performance Status scores assigned by oncologists and analyzed for correlation and agreement. RESULTS A total of 103 male and female individuals (ages 33-87 years) with various cancer diagnoses participated. The mean (SD) ECOG Performance Status score was 0.95 (0.87), range 0 to 3, and the mean BNAT score was 14.9 (4.3), range 5 to 24. Spearman agreement association of BNAT and ECOG Performance Status scores revealed a significant moderate negative relationship (r = -0.568). LIMITATIONS The BNAT was compared with the ECOG Performance Status, a commonly used but subjective measure. Additionally, a common data set was used for both deriving and evaluating the BNAT performance scale. CONCLUSIONS There was a moderate negative linear relationship of BNAT to ECOG Performance Status scores across all participants. The lack of progress in treating NS is impacted by the lack of known pathophysiology or associated quantitative biomarkers, which could provide tools for research. This current analysis investigated potential associations between NS and an extensive battery of behavioral and brain-based biomarkers in 932 psychosis probands from the B-SNIP database. The current analyses examined associations between PANSS-defined NS and (1) cognition, (2) pro-/anti-saccades, (3) evoked and resting-state electroencephalography (EEG), (4) resting-state fMRI, and (5) tractography. Canonical correlation analyses yielded symptom-biomarker constructs separately for each biomarker modality. Biomarker modalities were integrated using canonical discriminant analysis to summarize the symptom-biomarker relationships into a "biomarker signature" for NS. Finally, distinct biomarker profiles for 2 NS domains ("diminished expression" vs "avolition/apathy") were computed using step-wise linear regression. NS were associated with cognitive impairment, diminished EEG response amplitudes, deviant resting-state activity, and oculomotor abnormalities. While a connection between NS and poor cognition has been established, association to neurophysiology is novel, suggesting directions for future mechanistic studies. Brain MRI showed gadolinium enhancement peppering the pons and extending into the midbrain, medulla, brachium pontis, cerebellum and thalamus. The patient's CNS symptoms were improved significantly and accompanied by marked radiological improvement after glucocorticoids therapy, while the disease courses presented relapsing-remitting and glucocorticoids-dependent. Multiple nodules in the abdomen were accidentally discovered by the abdominal Computed tomography (CT) during the remission period. HS was diagnosed by histological examination of the abdominal node biopsy accompanied by CLIPPERS relapse, and eventually progressed to HPS. CONCLUSIONS CLIPPERS could be a syndrome of lymphohistiocytic disorders. Prominent symptoms include abnormal mental behavior (7/7), sleep disorder (6/7), speech disorder (6/7), involuntary movement (4/7) and paralysis (4/7). RESULTS The patient tested positive for MOG antibody in her cerebrospinal fluid, and the therapeutic effect of steroids was excellent. CONCLUSION This is the first reported case of MOG-EM coincident with lung cancer in a patient with multiple intracranial lesions. When patients present with a history of malignant tumors or suspected paraneoplastic neurological syndrome, clinicians should also be alert to the presence of other autoimmune antibodies such as MOG-IgG to avoid treatment delay. A series of biomass cellulose-derived carbon nanofibers (CCNF) were prepared at different pyrolysis temperatures in this study. Subsequently, this CCNF was combined with bismuth oxybromide (BiOBr) to form BiOBr/CCNF composite. The feasibility of BiOBr/CCNF as photocatalyst was investigated for the treatment against organic dye, rhodamine B (RhB) and inorganic metal ion, hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)). The effect of the pyrolysis temperature on the properties (e.g., crystalline structure, functional group distribution, and graphitization degree) of the prepared CCNF was investigated in relation to its photocatalytic performance. A pyrolysis temperature over 800 °C resulted in CCNF with higher degrees of graphitization which was accompanied by a better photocatalytic performance of its composite against RhB and Cr(VI). Their reaction kinetic rates were estimated as 8.15 × 10-2 and 0.21 mmol/g/h, respectively (at the initial concentration of 10 mg/L), while their quantum yield values were 1.56 × 10-6 and 3.83 × 10-6 molecules per photon, respectively. BiOBr/CCNF catalysts were efficient enough to simultaneously remove RhB and Cr(VI) through the generation of active oxidative and reductive oxygen species, respectively. The strategies used in this study offer a new pathway for preparing cost-effective photocatalysts with biomass derived carbonaceous materials for the efficient removal of multicomponent contaminants in water. Aluminosilicate-catalyzed electrochemical decomposition of ammonium cation (NH4+) in water was investigated using NH4+-saturated clinoptilolite and copper-nickel electrodes in the presence of different salts and acidic species. The results showed beneficial roles of chloride anion and moderately acidic media. NH4+ adsorbed by the zeolites was converted with a 98% selectivity into nitrogen. The process was found to obey zero-order kinetics in the presence of clinoptilolite and a first order process when NaCl is added. Beneficial buffering effects of the zeolite and acidic species were registered. Clinoptilolite turned out to act as both catalyst and NH4+ reservoir. These results allow envisaging effective and waste-free technology in treating NH4+-rich aqueous effluents through total electroconversion into nitrogen using low cost aluminosilicates. Clay minerals, soils, sludges and natural water turbidity are potential catalysts for this purpose.

  • The present review showed that pre-cooling methods are an effective strategy to increase sports performance in hot environments. This improvement is associated with the body surface exposed and its sensibility, as well as the time of application, obtaining the best results in prolonged physical exercise protocols.The effect of basil leaf (BLE) and wheat bran (WBE) extracts (potent anti-browning agents), on the phenolic content, antioxidant potential, microbiological quality, and consumer quality of shredded lettuce during storage were studied. Treatment of lettuce with increasing concentrations of BLE proportionally increased the total phenolic content and antioxidant properties. Compared to the control, the treatment enhanced the antiradical properties. This was especially visible during the analysis of the chemical extracts, while this effect was not retained in the potentially bioaccessible fraction. In the lettuce stored for 8 days, the highest reducing potential and ability to quench radicals were observed in samples treated with 1% BLE-33 mg Trolox equivalent/g d.m. and 2.8 mg Trolox equivalent/g d.m., respectively. Compounds exhibiting antiradical properties were easily bioaccessible in vitro. There was no negative effect of the treatments on the consumer quality. Most importantly, after 8 days of storage, lettuce treated with the studied extract, except 10% WBE, had higher microbiological quality. After 8-day storage, the coliforms count was reduced by 84% and 88% in samples treated with 0.5% BLE and 10% WBE, respectively. In conclusion, treatments of shredded lettuce with BLE and WBE maintain or even improve its quality during storage.Phytochrome-interacting factors (PIFs), a subfamily of basic helix-loop-helix (bHLH) transcription factors (TFs), play critical roles in regulating plant growth and development. The resurrection plant Myrothamnus flabellifolia possesses a noteworthy tolerance to desiccation, but no PIFs related to the response to abiotic stress have been functionally studied. In this study, a dehydration-inducible PIF gene, MfPIF1, was cloned and characterized. Subcellular localization assay revealed that MfPIF1 is localized predominantly in the nucleus. Overexpression of MfPIF1 in Arabidopsis thaliana led to enhanced drought and salinity tolerance, which was attributed to higher contents of chlorophyll, proline (Pro), soluble protein, and soluble sugar, activities of antioxidant enzymes as well as lower water loss rate, malondialdehyde (MDA) content, and reactive oxygen species (ROS) accumulation in transgenic lines compared with control plants. Moreover, MfPIF1 decreased stomatal aperture after drought and abscisic acid (ABA) treatment, and increased expression of both ABA biosynthesis and ABA-responsive genes including NCED3, P5CS, and RD29A. Overall, these results indicated that MfPIF1 may act as a positive regulator to drought and salinity responses, and therefore could be considered as a potential gene for plant genetic improvement of drought and salinity tolerance.The association between intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) shape and a poor treatment outcome has been established by few authors. We decided to analyze whether computationally assessed hemorrhage shape irregularity is associated with any known predictors of its poor treatment outcome. We retrospectively analyzed 48 patients with spontaneous intracerebral hemorrhage. For each patient we calculated Fractal Dimension, Compactness, Fourier Factor and Circle Factor. Our study showed that patients above 65 years old had significantly higher Compactness (0.70 ± 0.19 vs. 0.56 ± 0.20; p less then 0.01), Fractal Dimension (0.46 ± 0.22 vs. 0.32 ± 0.20; p = 0.03) and Circle Factor (0.51 ± 0.25 vs. 0.35 ± 0.17; p less then 0.01). An analysis of a subset of patients with R0 and low PCIs showed those with intermediate/high SCS had worse PFS and OS than patients with low SCS (p = 0.049) and OS (p = 0.037).     The present review showed that pre-cooling methods are an effective strategy to increase sports performance in hot environments. This improvement is associated with the body surface exposed and its sensibility, as well as the time of application, obtaining the best results in prolonged physical exercise protocols.The effect of basil leaf (BLE) and wheat bran (WBE) extracts (potent anti-browning agents), on the phenolic content, antioxidant potential, microbiological quality, and consumer quality of shredded lettuce during storage were studied. Treatment of lettuce with increasing concentrations of BLE proportionally increased the total phenolic content and antioxidant properties. Compared to the control, the treatment enhanced the antiradical properties. This was especially visible during the analysis of the chemical extracts, while this effect was not retained in the potentially bioaccessible fraction. In the lettuce stored for 8 days, the highest reducing potential and ability to quench radicals were observed in samples treated with 1% BLE-33 mg Trolox equivalent/g d.m. and 2.8 mg Trolox equivalent/g d.m., respectively. Compounds exhibiting antiradical properties were easily bioaccessible in vitro. There was no negative effect of the treatments on the consumer quality. Most importantly, after 8 days of storage, lettuce treated with the studied extract, except 10% WBE, had higher microbiological quality. After 8-day storage, the coliforms count was reduced by 84% and 88% in samples treated with 0.5% BLE and 10% WBE, respectively.   • Fifteen to 20% of pregnant women may exceed the recommended intake of folic acid (FA) by more than four-fold. This excess could compromise neurocognitive and motor development in offspring. Here, we explored the impact of an FA-supplemented diet (5× FASD, containing five-fold higher FA than recommended) during pregnancy on brain function in murine offspring, and elucidated mechanistic changes. We placed female C57BL/6 **** for one month on control diets or 5× FASD before mating. Diets were maintained throughout pregnancy and lactation. Behavioural tests were conducted on 3-week-old pups. Pups and mothers were sacrificed at weaning. Brains and livers were collected to examine choline/methyl metabolites and immunoreactive methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR). 5× FASD led to hyperactivity-like behavior and memory impairment in 3-week-old pups of both sexes. Reduced MTHFR protein in the livers of FASD mothers and male pups resulted in choline/methyl metabolite disruptions in offspring liver (decreased betaine) and brain (decreased glycerophosphocholine and sphingomyelin in male pups, and decreased phosphatidylcholine in both sexes). These results indicate that moderate folate supplementation downregulates MTHFR and alters choline/methyl metabolism, contributing to neurobehavioral alterations. Our findings support the negative impact of high FA on brain development, and may lead to improved guidelines on optimal folate levels during pregnancy.The p53 tumor suppressor plays a pivotal role in cancer and infectious disease. Many oncology treatments are now calling on immunotherapy approaches, and scores of studies have investigated the role of p53 antibodies in cancer diagnosis and therapy. This review summarizes the current knowledge from the preliminary evidence that suggests a potential role of p53 as an antigen in the adaptive immune response and as a key monitor of the innate immune system, thereby speculating on the idea that mutant p53 antigens serve as a druggable targets in immunotherapy. Except in a few cases, the vast majority of published work on p53 antibodies in cancer patients use wild-type p53 as the antigen to detect these antibodies and it is unclear whether they can recognize p53 mutants carried by cancer patients at all. We envision that an antibody targeting a specific mutant p53 will be effective therapeutically against a cancer carrying the exact same mutant p53. To corroborate such a possibility, a recent study showed that a T cell receptor-like (TCLR) antibody, initially made for a wild-type antigen, was capable of discriminating between mutant p53 and wild-type p53, specifically killing more cancer cells expressing mutant p53 than wild-type p53 in vitro and inhibiting the tumour growth of **** injected with mutant p53 cancer cells than **** with wild-type p53 cancer cells. Thus, novel antibodies targeting mutant p53, but not the wild-type isoform, should be pursued in preclinical and clinical studies.Background Early sport specialization has increased its popularity mostly based on the deliberate practice theory premises. Results There was no substantial variation among contrasting players by the onset of deliberate practice in all of the outcomes. Adjusting for gender, male players with late-puberty deliberate practice onset had better functional performance than players with pre- and mid-puberty onset of practice. Females players with late-puberty deliberate practice onset had slightly worst functional performance than players with pre- and mid-puberty onset of practice. Conclusions Early deliberate basketball practice does not appear to provide an advantage for the development of physiological functions. Likewise, enjoyment, motivation for deliberate practice and motivation for achievement and competition do not appear to be negatively influenced by early deliberate basketball practice. The debate about the relationship between time spent in deliberate practice and performance development in young athletes will need to emphasize the coaching pedagogical quality and the training environment and account for informal practice and deliberate play.The purpose of this study is to understand the potential types of anxiety among middle school students by analyzing the current situation of middle school students' anxiety and its influencing factor. This study used a multistage stratified cluster random sampling to investigate students in grades 9 to 12. Mplus 7.4 was used for latent profile analysis. A total of 900 junior high school students were investigated. The junior high school students were divided into three subgroups by latent profile analysis. A total of 223 junior high school students experienced severe anxiety, accounting for 24.78%. Multivariate logistic regression analysis revealed that males are more likely to develop moderate and severe anxiety. The development of severe anxiety (OR = 0.562, p less then 0.05) is less likely for students in schools with adequate mental health support. Students who were confident with their academic performances were less likely to develop moderate anxiety (OR = 0.377, p less then 0.05). Students with extreme academic pressure are more likely to develop moderate anxiety (OR = 6.523, p less then 0.05) and severe anxiety (OR = 11.579, p less then 0.05). It is recommended that mental health counseling be set up in schools and to provide professional counselors to prevent serious anxiety for students. This paper also demonstrates a need to reduce students' academic pressure.

In conclusion, the period of the year during which ejaculates were collected helps explain the intra-male variability of SP-cytokine levels in breeding boars.Background Poor eating habits increase children's risk of chronic diseases such as overweight and obesity, adult diabetes, and cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases. Therefore, this study aimed to examine the eating habits of school-age children and their impact on children's body mass index. Methods Multistage cluster sampling was used to sample 2224 students in grades 4 to 6 from 16 primary schools in Changsha. A self-designed questionnaire was used to collect general demographic, eating habit, and snack consumption data from school-age children. Height and weight were measured so that the body mass index Z-score could be calculated and evaluated according to the 2007 World Health Organization's Body Mass Index (BMI) reference standard. Results The prevalence rates of overweight and obesity in school-age children were 17.0% and 8.3%, respectively. Boys had higher rates of overweight and obesity than girls (19.9% vs. 13.6%, 12.9% vs. 3.0%, respectively, p less then 0.05). Among the total population of children, 71.6% reported picky eating habits, and 55.1% had late-night snacks. Children who skipped breakfast (OR 1.507 and 95% CI 1.116~2.035) and ate puffed food (OR 1.571 and 95% CI 1.170~2.110) were more likely to be overweight/obese. Conclusions The eating habits of school-age children are closely related to their weight status. Poor eating habits can be risk factors for overweight and obesity. The dietary management of children should be strengthened so that they develop good eating habits and the incidence of overweight and obesity in school-age children decreases.Preeclampsia (PE) and Intrauterine Growth Restriction (IUGR) are major contributors to perinatal morbidity and mortality. These pregnancy disorders are associated with placental dysfunction and share similar pathophysiological features. The aim of this study was to compare the placental gene expression profiles including mRNA and lncRNAs from pregnant women from four study groups PE, IUGR, PE-IUGR, and normal pregnancy (NP). Gene expression microarray analysis was performed on placental tissue obtained at delivery and results were validated using RTq-PCR. Differential gene expression analysis revealed that the largest transcript variation was observed in the IUGR samples compared to NP (n = 461; 314 mRNAs 252 up-regulated and 62 down-regulated; 133 lncRNAs 36 up-regulated and 98 down-regulated). We also detected a group of differentially expressed transcripts shared between the PE and IUGR samples compared to NP (n = 39), including 9 lncRNAs with a high correlation degree (p less then 0.05). Functional enrichment of these shared transcripts showed that cytokine signaling pathways, protein modification, and regulation of JAK-STAT cascade are over-represented in both placental ischemic diseases. Only 23% of samples were culture-positive compared to 83% positivity by A. fumigatus species PCR highlighting concerns about the low yield of cultures. Children who skipped breakfast (OR 1.507 and 95% CI 1.116~2.035) and ate puffed food (OR 1.571 and 95% CI 1.170~2.110) were more likely to be overweight/obese. Conclusions The eating habits of school-age children are closely related to their weight status. Poor eating habits can be risk factors for overweight and obesity. The dietary management of children should be strengthened so that they develop good eating habits and the incidence of overweight and obesity in school-age children decreases.Preeclampsia (PE) and Intrauterine Growth Restriction (IUGR) are major contributors to perinatal morbidity and mortality. These pregnancy disorders are associated with placental dysfunction and share similar pathophysiological features. The aim of this study was to compare the placental gene expression profiles including mRNA and lncRNAs from pregnant women from four study groups PE, IUGR, PE-IUGR, and normal pregnancy (NP). Gene expression microarray analysis was performed on placental tissue obtained at delivery and results were validated using RTq-PCR. Differential gene expression analysis revealed that the largest transcript variation was observed in the IUGR samples compared to NP (n = 461; 314 mRNAs 252 up-regulated and 62 down-regulated; 133 lncRNAs 36 up-regulated and 98 down-regulated). We also detected a group of differentially expressed transcripts shared between the PE and IUGR samples compared to NP (n = 39), including 9 lncRNAs with a high correlation degree (p less then 0.05). Functional enrichment of these shared transcripts showed that cytokine signaling pathways, protein modification, and regulation of JAK-STAT cascade are over-represented in both placental ischemic diseases. In patients with invasive aspergillosis, a low yield of fungal cultures results in underestimation of azole resistance. To detect azole resistance in A. fumigatus, we applied the AsperGenius® Resistance multiplex real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assay to detect TR34/L98H, and TR46/T289A/Y121F mutations and the AsperGenius® G54/M220 RUO PCR assay to detect G54/M220 mutations directly in bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) samples of 160 patients with chronic respiratory diseases in Delhi, India. Only 23% of samples were culture-positive compared to 83% positivity by A. fumigatus species PCR highlighting concerns about the low yield of cultures. Allergen-specific immunotherapy (AIT) is the only causal rather than symptomatic treatment method available for allergy. Currently, AIT is being administered using immune response modifiers or adjuvants. Adjuvants aid in the induction of a vigorous and long-lasting immune response, thereby improving the efficiency of AIT. The successful development of a novel adjuvant requires a thorough understanding of the conventional and novel adjuvants under development. Thus, this review discusses the potentials and challenges of these adjuvants and their mechanism of action. Vaccine development based on nanoparticles is a promising strategy for AIT, due to their inherent physicochemical properties, along with their ease of production and ability to stimulate innate immunity. Although nanoparticles have provided promising results as an adjuvant for AIT in in vivo studies, a deeper insight into the interaction of nanoparticle-allergen complexes with the immune system is necessary. This review focuses on the methods of harnessing the adjuvant effect of nanoparticles by detailing the molecular mechanisms underlying the immune response, which includes allergen uptake, processing, presentation, and induction of T cell differentiation.

  • Physical fitness is an important component in the development and health of children and adolescents. Given the equivocal results of previous research regarding the influence of the living environment on physical fitness, this study examined differences in physical fitness in urban and rural elementary school children in Upper Austria. A total of 18,168 (51% male) children between 6 and 11 years of age participated in anthropometric assessments and completed eight fitness tests that assessed cardiorespiratory endurance, muscular power, speed, agility, flexibility, and ball handling skills during a single test session in the school's gymnasium. Urban living environment was associated with higher body weight (p = 0.01) and lower physical fitness (p less then 0.01), except for flexibility, which was better in urban children (p less then 0.01) and upper body strength (no difference), even after accounting for differences in body weight. Furthermore, it was shown that urban-rural differences in physical fitness are more pronounced in normal weight children and that these differences increase with age. These results highlight the potential of the living environment for the promotion of an active lifestyle that enhances physical fitness. The availability of safe spaces that facilitate unstructured and structured physical activity, as well as active transportation provide viable options for the promotion of physical fitness in children.It remains a mystery as to how neurons are connected and thereby enable use to think, and volume reconstruction from series of microscopy sections of brains is a vital technique in determining this connectivity. Image registration is a key component; the aim of image registration is to estimate the deformation field between two images. Current methods choose to directly regress the deformation field; however, this task is very challenging. It is common to trade off computational complexity with precision when designing complex models for deformation field estimation. This approach is very inefficient, leading to a long inference time. In this paper, we suggest that complex models are not necessary and solve this dilemma by proposing a dual-network architecture. We divide the deformation field prediction problem into two relatively simple subproblems and solve each of them on one branch of the proposed dual network. The two subproblems have completely opposite properties, and we fully utilize these properties to simplify the design of the dual network. These simple architectures enable high-speed image registration. The two branches are able to work together and make up for each other's drawbacks, and no loss of accuracy occurs even when simple architectures are involved. Furthermore, we introduce a series of loss functions to enable the joint training of the two networks in an unsupervised manner without introducing costly manual annotations. The experimental results reveal that our method outperforms state-of-the-art methods in fly brain electron microscopy image registration tasks, and further ablation studies enable us to obtain a comprehensive understanding of each component of our network.Early age at diagnosis of breast cancer is a known risk factor for hereditary predisposition and some studies show a high risk of contralateral breast cancer in BRCA1 carriers diagnosed at very young ages. For all the measured parameters, the statistical analysis reveals that the interaction between plant density and genotype was not significant. On the other hand, independently of the genotype, the higher the plant's density the higher was the pods' yield per unit area, while the average percentage of hulls was of 75% with little differences between genotypes. All genotypes showed a low content of vicine (12.4 mg 100 g-1 FW), a well know favism-inducing factor, and a very high phenols content (between 443 and 646 mg 100 g-1 FW) and levo-dihydroxy phenylalanine (L-dopa-on average 170 mg 100 g-1 FW), used for the treatment of patients affected by Parkinson's disease. In conclusion, this study highlights the good potential of faba hulls as unconventional vegetable, suggesting its use as a new functional food in the daily diet and also for patients with Parkinson's disease.

  • Simple logistic regression was used to correlate the imaging characteristics with malignant status and grade. RESULTS Malignant OTs had significantly higher Zeff and IC compared with benign OTs. The threshold values for the diagnosis of malignant OT were IC≥9.74 (100 μg/cm3) with 81% sensitivity and 73% specificity and Zeff ≥8.16 with 85% sensitivity and 73% specificity. High-grade OTs had significantly higher WC compared with low-grade OTs, and a threshold of ≥1,013.92 mg/cm3 differentiated them with 80% sensitivity and 83% specificity. CONCLUSION DECT may be a tool to help distinguish malignant and benign OTs and predict tumour grade. AIM To determine whether the presence of internal calcifications on perinatal post-mortem skeletal surveys (PMSS) are associated with certain diagnoses of fetal loss. METHODS AND MATERIALS A 6-month retrospective, single-centre, cohort study was conducted on PMSS performed for perinatal death assessment. One reader re-reviewed all PMSS images for the presence and location of internal calcifications, and noted whether these were included within the original radiology report. Findings at autopsy were then reviewed independently by a second researcher and cause of fetal loss or main diagnosis recorded. Chi-squared tests were conducted to identify differences between those with and without internal calcifications at PMSS. RESULTS Two hundred and thirty perinatal deaths (mean gestational age 18 weeks; average 12-35 weeks) were included in the study, of which 42 (18.3%) demonstrated intra-abdominal calcifications, and 16/42 (38.1%) were mentioned in the radiology reports. Most calcifications were found to be within the lumen of the gastrointestinal tract, and in the left upper quadrant of the abdomen. There was no statistical difference between identifiable causes for fetal loss at autopsy in cases with and without calcification at PMSS (59.5% versus 58.5% respectively, p=0.904). Nevertheless, where calcification and a cause for fetal loss were found, the aetiology was more likely to be due a fetal rather than placental issue. CONCLUSION The presence of internal calcifications on PMSS was not associated with an increased likelihood of explainable fetal loss or particular diagnosis at autopsy. We hypothesized that post-transplant survival in mechanically ventilated recipients has improved over time. METHODS Using a national registry, we compared hazard of death at 30 days, 4 and 14 months, 3 and 5 years, and overall for adults on mechanical ventilation who underwent lung or heart-lung transplantation from May 4, 2011, to April 4, 2018 (modern group) with those undergoing transplantation from May 4, 2005, to May 3, 2011 (early group). RESULTS 228 HFT occurred [cumulative incidence rate (IR)=8.9/104; ≥65 years=65%; vaccination coverage=13% (≥65 years=58%); mortality=9%); maximum incidence in the 6th week (IR=1.7/104) (in CLM, in 4th)]. Highest peak of RSV occurred in the 3rd (in CLM, in the 52th). PFv (14-65 years) was 96% (PFp=58%) and in ≥65, 32% (PFp=21%). NNV=414. Herein, we report three-dimensional paper chromatography (3D-PC) as a micro-chromatographic platform. The method was based on applying the origami microfluidic device for separation, coupled by colorimetric methods for simultaneous determination. The microfluidic device fabrication was a facile printing approach. Two azo food dyes, Tartrazine (E102) and Indigo carmine (E132), were selected as a model analyte, while carbonate-bicarbonate buffer was used as the mobile phase. Our micro-chromatographic device is associated with two big advantages including needing very small volume of mobile phase ( ~12 µL) and ultrafast separation time (~35 s). Under the optimal conditions, the method provided acceptable linear ranges of 0. 0 g L1-18.0 g L1 (R2 = 0.997) for E102 and 0.070 g L1-10.0 g L1 for E132 and the limits of detection (3σ/slope) were evaluated as 0.620 and 0.060 g L1, respectively. The proposed method was successfully applied in the separation and quantification of these dyes in commercial food products such as jelly, candy, and four kinds of drink samples without any sample preparation prior to analysis.

The microfluidic device fabrication was a facile printing approach. Two azo food dyes, Tartrazine (E102) and Indigo carmine (E132), were selected as a model analyte, while carbonate-bicarbonate buffer was used as the mobile phase. Our micro-chromatographic device is associated with two big advantages including needing very small volume of mobile phase ( ~12 µL) and ultrafast separation time (~35 s). Under the optimal conditions, the method provided acceptable linear ranges of 0. 0 g L1-18.0 g L1 (R2 = 0.997) for E102 and 0.070 g L1-10.0 g L1 for E132 and the limits of detection (3σ/slope) were evaluated as 0.620 and 0.060 g L1, respectively. The proposed method was successfully applied in the separation and quantification of these dyes in commercial food products such as jelly, candy, and four kinds of drink samples without any sample preparation prior to analysis.

  • Infectious ocular keratitis is the leading cause of blindness worldwide. Bacterial resistance to classical pharmacological treatments raised the interest of researchers towards antimicrobial peptide (AMP)-based therapy. hLF 1-11, a synthetic antimicrobial peptide derived from the N-terminus of human lactoferrin, proved effective against different bacteria and yeast but, like all proteinaceous materials, it is unstable from chemical, physical, and biological points of view. In this study, new freeze-dried solid matrices containing mucoadhesive polymers were prepared and characterized in terms of rheology, hydration time, bioadhesion, drug content, and in vitro release. The formulation HPMC/T2/HA/hLF 1-11fd was selected for the delivery of hLF 1-11, since it showed good drug recovery and no chemical degradation up to at least 6 months (long-term stability). Furthermore, the HPMC/T2/HA/hLF 1-11fd matrix allowed for the release of the drug in a simulated physiological environment, linked to an optimal hydration time, and the peptide antimicrobial activity was preserved for up to 15 months of storage, a very promising result considering the chemical liability of proteinaceous material. Using qRT-PCR, we analyze BDH2mRNA expression in the bone marrow (BM) of 187 MDS patients, 119 de novo acute myeloid leukemia (AML) patients, and 43 lymphoma patients with normal BM. Elevated BDH2mRNA expression in BM is observed in MDS patients (n = 187 vs. 43, normal BM; P = 0.009), and this is related to ferritin levels. Patients with higher BDH2 expression show a greater risk of leukemia progression (15.25% vs. 3.77%, lower expression; P = 0.017) and shorter leukemia-free-survival (medium LFS, 9 years vs. 7 years; P = 0.024), as do patients with a ferritin level ≥350 ng/mL. Additionally, we investigate the mechanisms related to the prognostic ability of BDH2 by using BDH2-KD THP1. The cell cycle analysis, surface markers, and special stain studies indicate that BDH2-KD induces differentiation and decreases the growth rate of THP1 cells, which is associated with the retardation of the cell cycle. Moreover, many genes, including genes related to mitochondrial catabolism, oncogenes, tumor suppressor genes, and genes related to cell differentiation and proliferation influence BDH2-KD THP1 cells. Herein, we demonstrate that BDH2 is involved in cell cycle arrest and the inhibition of differentiation in malignant cells. Furthermore, the high BDH2 expression in MDS patients could be suggestive of a poor prognostic factor. Mechanical surface treatments that introduce compressive residual stresses (RSs) in metallic materials can lead to a better performance in terms of fretting and fatigue and may lower the susceptibility to corrosion. The study investigates the impact of mechanical surface treatments on the corrosion behavior of metallic biomaterials. Compressive RSs were introduced by deep rolling and microblasting in Ti6Al4V and CoCrMo samples. Polished samples served as reference. Corrosion behavior was characterized by repeated anodic polarization. Residual stresses of up to about -900 MPa were introduced by deep rolling with a reach in depth of approximately 500 µm. Microblasting led to compressive RSs up to approximately -800 and -600 MPa for Ti6Al4V and CoCrMo, respectively, in the immediate vicinity of the surface. For Ti6Al4V, microblasting resulted in decreased corrosion resistance with lower breakdown potentials and/or increased passive current densities in comparison to the polished and deep-rolled samples. The corrosion behavior of CoCrMo on the other hand was not affected by the mechanical surface treatments.This study examined associations of home food availabilities with prediabetes and diabetes among 8929 adults (20-70 years) participating in 2007-2010 National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys. Odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (95% CIs) were estimated by logistic regression. Relative to non-diabetic participants (individuals without diabetes or prediabetes), prediabetes participants were associated with lower availabilities of green vegetables (OR = 0.82; 95% CI = 0.73-0.91; p = 0.0006) and fat-free/low-fat milk (OR = 0.80, 95% CI = 0.65-0.89; p = 0.001) and higher sugary drink availability (OR = 1.24, 95% CI = 1.04-1.48; p = 0.02), adjusting for age, sex, and ethnicity (Model 1). The associations remained significant for vegetables (p = 0.005) and fat-free/low-fat milk (p = 0.02) adjusting for additional confounders (body mass index, education, Model 2). Adjusting for dietary components did not change the above results (in model 2) significantly. Participants with high healthy food availability scores had approximately 31% reduction (p = 0.003) in odds of prediabetes compared to those with low scores in Model 1. No associations were detected for diabetes except for fat-free/low-fat milk availability, for which an inverse association was observed in Model 1 (OR = 0.80, 95% CI = 0.65-0.99; p = 0.04). The results show prediabetes participants had lower availability of healthy foods and higher availability of unhealthy foods, suggesting the need to improve healthy food availability at home for this population.Electrooculography (EOG) signals have been widely used in Human-Computer Interfaces (HCI). Here, we present a system for classifying four directions of eye movements employing EOG signals. The system is based on open source ecosystems, the Raspberry Pi single-board computer, the OpenBCI biosignal acquisition device, and an open-source python library. The designed system provides a cheap, compact, and easy to carry system that can be replicated or modified. We used Maximum, Minimum, and Median trial values as features to create a Support Vector Machine (SVM) classifier. A mean of 90% accuracy was obtained from 7 out of 10 subjects for online classification of Up, Down, Left, and Right movements. This classification system can be used as an input for an HCI, i.e., for assisted communication in paralyzed people.

  • Inhibitory control processes are indispensable for goal-directed behavior. On a neurophysiological level, theta band power has been suggested to be important during inhibitory control as well as proactive control processes. Here we ask whether theta activity in the pre-trial/between-trial time period, reflects proactive control that correlates with theta activity in the upcoming trial. Theoretical considerations also suggest that such a correlation is modulated by the demands on inhibition. To investigate these questions, we conducted an EEG study using a Go/Nogo task in which demands on inhibitory control are varied. We used different EEG beamforming approaches to focus the analysis on the functional neuroanatomical level. We show that theta band activity in the ventromedial prefrontal cortex (vmPFC, BA10) is associated with the proactive control in the pre-trial interval and correlates with theta-related processes in the right inferior frontal gyrus (rIFG, BA45) during response inhibition. In addition, we show that demands on inhibitory control modulate the inter-relation between proactive vmPFC and inhibitory control-related rIFG-theta activity. Such effects were not observed for beta frequency activity. The study is the first to emphasize the relevance of pre-trial (proactive) vmPFC theta-band activity during inhibitory control in humans. It is shown that pre-trial activity, which is often neglected in EEG research, provides valuable information about the neuronal dynamics of cognitive control.Functional connectivity (FC), thought to provide a window into neural communication, has become a core focus in the study of brain function and cognition. However, there is no consensus on how to conceptualize large-scale FC in electrophysiology. Despite quantifying different electrophysiological properties, the relationship between PhC and AmpC remains largely unknown. We assessed spatial and temporal correspondence between PhC and AmpC over 5 canonical frequency bands during a cue-based motor task using electrocorticography (ECoG) in 18 patients (8 females) undergoing presurgical monitoring. Significant correspondence between the spatial pattern of PhC and AmpC was detected during stimulus processing across all subjects and frequency bands (R ​≈ ​0.50 for theta, decreasing with increasing frequency). The cross-measure spatial correlation vanished almost entirely when accounting for the portion of FC equally present during pre- and post-stimulus intervals, suggesting that the spatial correlations reflect intrinsic FC independent of stimulus processing. Stimulus-related processing modulated both PhC and AmpC, however in a spatially independent manner. Examining the linear temporal correlation, we found no evidence for linear dependence between PhC and AmpC. Supporting the robustness of our findings, results extended to a verb generation task in a second ECoG dataset of 6 subjects. We conclude that PhC and AmpC reflect intrinsic FC similarly across space, but exhibit divergent stimulus-related FC changes over space and time.Deep brain stimulation (DBS) can be a very efficient treatment option for movement disorders and psychiatric diseases. To better understand DBS mechanisms, brain activity can be recorded using magnetoencephalography (MEG) with the stimulator turned on. However, DBS produces large artefacts compromising MEG data quality due to both the applied current and the movement of wires connecting the stimulator with the electrode. To filter out these artefacts, several methods to suppress the DBS artefact have been proposed in the literature. A comparative study evaluating each method's effectiveness, however, is missing so far. In this study, we evaluate the performance of four artefact rejection methods on MEG data from phantom recordings with DBS acquired with an Elekta Neuromag and a CTF system (i) Hampel-filter, (ii) spectral signal space projection (S3P), (iii) independent component analysis with mutual information (ICA-MI), and (iv) temporal signal space separation (tSSS). In the sensor space, the largest increase in signal-to-noise (SNR) ratio was achieved by ICA-MI, while the best correspondence in terms of source activations was obtained by tSSS. LCMV beamforming alone was not sufficient to suppress the DBS-induced artefacts.Real-world environments are extremely rich in visual information. At any given moment in time, only a fraction of this information is available to the eyes and the brain, rendering naturalistic vision a collection of incomplete snapshots. Previous research suggests that in order to successfully contextualize this fragmented information, the visual system sorts inputs according to spatial schemata, that is knowledge about the typical composition of the visual world. Here, we used a large set of 840 different natural scene fragments to investigate whether this sorting mechanism can operate across the diverse visual environments encountered during real-world vision. We recorded brain activity using electroencephalography (EEG) while participants viewed incomplete scene fragments at fixation. Using representational similarity analysis on the EEG data, we tracked the fragments' cortical representations across time. We found that the fragments' typical vertical location within the environment (top or bottom) predicted their cortical representations, indexing a sorting of information according to spatial schemata. The fragments' cortical representations were most strongly organized by their vertical location at around 200 ​ms after image onset, suggesting rapid perceptual sorting of information according to spatial schemata. In control analyses, we show that this sorting is flexible with respect to visual features it is neither explained by commonalities between visually similar indoor and outdoor scenes, nor by the feature organization emerging from a deep neural network trained on scene categorization. Demonstrating such a flexible sorting across a wide range of visually diverse scenes suggests a contextualization mechanism suitable for complex and variable real-world environments.
