Curcumin blocks bacterial growth owing to its structural characteristics and the generation of anti-oxidation products. Curcumin can inhibit bacterial virulence factors, inhibit bacterial biofilm formation and prevent bacterial adhesion to host receptors through the bacterial quorum sensing regulation system. As a photosensitizer, curcumin acts under blue light irradiation to induce phototoxicity and inhibit bacterial growth. Moreover, it can exert a synergistic antibacterial effect with other antibacterial substances. In this review, we summarize the research progress on the antibacterial mechanism of curcumin based on five targeting structures and two modes of action. Our discussion provides a theoretical basis and technical foundation for the development and application of natural antibacterial agents.Two cases of middle-aged female patients treated by gastric bypass surgery for weight loss presented to our clinic for a follow-up examination 3-6 months after the surgical procedure (a mini gastric bypass and a modified single anastomosis sleeve-ileostomy). In both patients increased ACTH levels and either high serum cortisol or an increased urinary cortisol excretion was apparent and triggered further endocrine testing. Serum cortisol could not be suppressed adequately by 2 and 4 mg dexamethasone in the standardized oral overnight suppression test while midnight salivary cortisol dropped well below the desired cut-off. This led to the hypothesis of an impaired dexamethasone resorption and could be further substantiated by suppression of serum cortisol below the cut-off by an intravenous dexamethasone application. The data presented point to an impairment of enteral synthetic corticosteroid resorption in patients after gastric bypass surgery and could be of importance for individuals in need for immunosuppressive treatment. In view of the growing number of bariatric procedures, pharmacokinetics of corticosteroids and other drugs should be tested in clinical trials.Writing a manuscript for peer review is an art for which little formal preparation is provided during the education of physicians, scientists, and allied health professionals. As a result, the use of Triton X-100 in the European Economic Area (EEA) would not be allowed unless an ECHA issued authorization was granted after the sunset date of January 4th , 2021. This has prompted biopharmaceutical manufacturers to search for novel, environment-friendly alternative detergents for enveloped virus inactivation. In this study we report the identification of such a novel detergent, Simulsol SL 11W. Simulsol SL 11W is a undecyl glycoside surfactant produced from glucose and C11 fatty alcohol. We report here that Simulsol SL 11W was able to effectively inactive enveloped viruses such as xenotropic murine leukemia virus (XMuLV) and psuedorabies virus (PRV). By using XMuLV as a representative enveloped virus, the influence of various parameters on the effectiveness of virus inactivation were evaluated. Virus inactivation by Simulsol SL 11W was effective across different clarified bioreactor harvests at broad concentrations, pHs and temperature ranges. Findings Past 30 days e-cigarette use was reported by 33.1% (95% CI 29.1-37.4%) of ever/no past 30 days smokers, 68.6% (95%CI64.1-72.7%) of past 30 days smokers and 7.2% (95% CI6.3-8.2%) of never smokers in 2018, and by 19.3% (95%CI16.1-23.1%), 53.0% (95% CI46.9-58.9%) and 3.3% (95%CI2.7-4.4%) in 2017, respectively (all P less then 0.001). Prevalence of past 30 days e-cigarette use was higher among frequent smokers (69.8%, 95%CI62.3-76.5% in 2018; 53.8%, 95%CI44.1-63.2% in 2017, P less then 0.001) and lower among never smokers. Most of the latter were infrequent users while frequent and daily e-cigarette use was 18 and 24-fold lower compared with ever smokers, respectively. Approximately half of past 30 days and 70% of frequent e-cigarette users reported ever marijuana use with e-cigarettes in both years. Stereotypies-repetitive, unvarying, functionless behaviours -are common abnormal behaviours that often arise in suboptimal conditions. While the role of stereotypies in welfare assessment is well studied, few investigations address the relationship between stereotypic behaviour and reproduction. We examined the correlation between stereotypic behaviour and reproductive performance in 101 giant pandas (Ailuropoda melanoleuca). High stereotyping males copulated more and produced more cubs, suggesting that highly sexually motivated males were prone to stereotypy but also had high reproductive competence. Female stereotypies were negatively associated with all reproductive measures closely tied to behavioural competence high stereotyping females were less likely to copulate, less likely to mother-rear cubs, and-probably a result of poor maternal care-had lower cub survival. However, females that exhibited stereotypies were more likely to produce a cub, suggesting stereotypies are tied to behavioural but not physiological competence. High stereotyping female pandas also displayed strong and consistent bias toward production of female offspring while paternal relationship to sex allocation was the reverse. These results are consistent with stress-mediated sex allocation theory. Our findings raise concern about differential reproductive success among high and low stereotyping pandas, and possible genetic adaptation to captivity.Leptospirosis is caused by pathogenic Leptospira transmitted through contact with contaminated environments. In Madagascar, a large diversity of pathogenic Leptospira display a tight specificity towards their endemic volant or terrestrial mammalian hosts. The basis of this specificity is unknown it may indicate some genetically determined compatibility between host cells and bacteria or only reflect ecological constraints preventing contacts between specific hosts. In this study, Rattus norvegicus was experimentally infected with either Leptospira interrogans, Leptospira borgpetersenii or Leptospira mayottensis isolated from rats, bats or tenrecs, respectively. Leptospira borgpetersenii and L. mayottensis do not support renal colonization as featured by no shedding of live bacteria in urine and low level and sporadic detection of Leptospira DNA in kidneys. In contrast 2 out of the 7 R. norvegicus challenged with L. interrogans developed renal colonization and intense Leptospira shedding in urine throughout the 3 months of experimental infection. In this study, therefore, the plasma concentrations and brain distribution of these compounds were examined in vivo using rats injected intravenously with GM. Plasma concentrations were analyzed using liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry analysis and brain distribution using mass spectrometry imaging analysis. Plasma GM and HM-1 concentrations decreased in the 4 h after injection, whereas the concentration of plasma HM-2 increased at 4 h. In the 0.25 h-brain, GM signals were diffusely observed throughout the brain, including the cerebral cortex, hippocampus, striatum, thalamus, amygdala, cerebellum, and cerebral ventricle. HM signals were detected only in the ventricles of the brain at 4 h. These results suggest that plasma GM enters the brain and distributes in the parenchyma of various brain regions involved in BPSD, while plasma HM does not enter the brain parenchyma. This study is also the first to visually demonstrate the brain distribution of GM and its metabolite in vivo.Deficits during gait poses a significant threat to the quality of life in patients with Multiple Sclerosis (MS). Using the muscle synergy concept, we investigated the modular organization of the neuromuscular control during walking in MS patients compared to healthy participants (HP). We hypothesized a widening and increased fuzziness of motor primitives (e.g. increased overlap intervals) in MS patients compared to HP allowing the motor system to increase robustness during walking. We analysed temporal gait parameters, local dynamic stability and muscle synergies from myoelectric signals of 13 ipsilateral leg muscles using non-negative matrix factorization. Compared to HP, MS patients showed a significant decrease in the local dynamic stability of walking during both, preferred and fixed (0.7 m/s) speed. MS patients demonstrated changes in time-dependent activation patterns (motor primitives) and alterations of the relative muscle contribution to the specific synergies (motor modules). We specifically found a widening in three out of four motor primitives during preferred speed and in two out of four during fixed speed in MS patients compared to HP. The widening increased the fuzziness of motor control in MS patients, which allows the motor system to increase its robustness when coping with pathology-related motor deficits during walking.'Glera' and 'Ribolla Gialla' are the most economically relevant local grapevine cultivars of Friuli Venezia Giulia region (north-eastern Italy). 'Glera' is used to produce the world-renowned Prosecco wine. 'Ribolla Gialla' cultivation is constantly increasing due to the strong demand for sparkling wine and is the most important variety in Brda (Slovenia). Knowledge of local varieties history in terms of migration and pedigree relationships has scientific and marketing appeal. Following prospections, genotyping and ampelographic characterization of minor germplasm in Friuli Venezia Giulia, a further research was developed to understand the parentage relationships among the grapevine varieties grown in this region. An integrated strategy was followed combining the analysis of nuclear and chloroplast microsatellites with the Vitis 18k SNP chip. Two main recurrent parents were found, which can be regarded as "founders" 'Vulpea', an Austrian variety parent-offspring related with at least ten Friuli Venezia Giulia cultivars, among them 'Glera', and 'Refosco Nostrano', first degree related with other six Friuli Venezia Giulia varieties.

The Chao, Shannon, and Evenness indexes were used to quantify the richness, diversity, and evenness of the bacterial community, respectively. The results show that the richness of the bacterial community initially increased and then decreased in the sand columns during the experiments of geothermal water recharge, while the changes in bacterial diversity and evenness were not apparent. A variety of bacterial phyla were found, among which Proteobacteria was predominant (88.31%), followed by Actinobacteria, Bacteroidetes, and Firmicutes (4.23%, 3.44%, and 2.49%). For the non-Proteobacterial phyla, Actinobacteria gradually disappeared while Bacteroidetes and Firmicutes were detected during the percolation experiments. Carbon nano-fullerene selected as lead molecule and their drug-likeliness and pharmacokinetics properties were computationally predicted. The binding potential of carbon nano-fullerene toward selected drug targets was modeled and compared with the binding of conventional drugs, doripenem, and polymyxin-B with their usual targets. The stabilities of four best-docked complexes were confirmed by molecular dynamic (MD) simulation. This study suggested that selected genes demonstrated relevant interactions in the constructed metabolic pathways. Carbon fullerene exhibited significant binding abilities to most of the prioritized targets in comparison with the binding of last-resort antibiotics and their usual target. The four best ligand-receptor interactions predicted by molecular docking revealed that stability throughout MD simulation. Notably, carbon fullerene exhibited profound binding with outer membrane protein (OmpA) and ribonuclease-HII (rnhB) of A. baumannii and 2-heptyl-4(1H)-quinolone synthase (pqsBC) and chemotaxis protein (wspA) of P. aeruginosa. Results showed that ratings of study credibility (e.g. evidence strength, ηP2 = .15) and researcher trustworthiness (e.g. expertise, ηP2 = .15) were rated higher upon learning of replication success, and lower in case of replication failure. The replication's author did not make a meaningful difference. Prior beliefs acted as covariate for ratings of credibility, but not trustworthiness, while epistemic beliefs regarding the certainty of knowledge were a covariate to both. Hence, laypeople seem to notice that successfully replicated results entail higher epistemic significance, while possibly not taking into account that replications should be conducted by other labs.

Are humans the only species with a sense of consciousness? This question has intrigued me for most of my life. Having kept pets and livestock animals, and observed wild animals from both near and far, I have often wondered just how **** they know about their surroundings and their place in it. Do they know how to reason out answers to questions important to them? Are they aware of the consequences of their actions? Can they anticipate what other animals, including those of close kin and other, more remote species, are likely to do in certain situations? Can they see themselves inside their minds, if they do, indeed, have minds? Do they dream?Clinical features of Kawasaki disease (KD) display overlap with common pediatric viral illnesses, leading some to hypothesize that a viral infection is the inciting event for KD. To investigate viral infection history in KD patients, we performed comprehensive serological profiling using a high-throughput phage immunoprecipitation sequencing assay covering the complete reference protein sequences of known viruses with human tropism. KD and matched febrile control sera did not demonstrate differences in antiviral antibody profiles. We conclude that in the acute and subacute phase of disease, KD patients do not exhibit serologic evidence of exposure to known viruses that differs from controls.DNA binding fluorescent proteins are useful probes for a broad range of biological applications. Although there are numerous DNA binding proteins, only a small portion of them have been exploited to construct FP-DBPs to study molecular motion in a cell or in vitro single-molecule visualisation. Therefore, it would be informative to review FP-DBP for further development. Here, we summarise the design of FP-DBPs and their brightness, photostability, pKa, maturation rate, and binding affinity (Kd) characteristics. Then, we review the applications of FP-DBP in cells to study chromosome dynamics, DNA replication, transcription factors, DNA damage, and repair. Finally, we focus on single DNA molecule visualisation using FP-DBP.Objectives To describe the CT features and clinical characteristics of pediatric patients with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). Methods A total of 9 COVID-19 infected pediatric patients were included in this study. Clinical history, laboratory examination, and detailed CT imaging features were analyzed. All patients underwent the first CT scanning on the same day of being diagnosed by real-time reverse-transcription polymerase chain reaction (rRT-PCR). A low-dose CT scan was performed during follow-up. Results All the child patients had positive results. Four patients had cough and one patient had fever. One patient presented both cough and fever. Two children presented other symptoms like sore throat and stuffy nose. One child showed no clinical symptom. Five patients had positive initial CT findings with subtle lesions like ground-glass opacity (GGO) or spot-like mixed consolidation. Three patients were reported with negative results in the initial and follow-up CT examination. One patient was reported with initial negative CT findings but turning positive during the first follow-up. All patients had absorbed lesions on follow-up CT images after treatment. Conclusions Pediatric COVID-19 patients have certain imaging and clinical features as well as disease prognosis. Children with COVID-19 tend to have normal or subtle CT findings and relatively better outcome.Recently, the outbreak of Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) has spread rapidly across the world. Due to the large number of infected patients and heavy labor for doctors, computer-aided diagnosis with machine learning algorithm is urgently needed, and could largely reduce the efforts of clinicians and accelerate the diagnosis process. Chest computed tomography (CT) has been recognized as an informative tool for diagnosis of the disease. In this study, we propose to conduct the diagnosis of COVID-19 with a series of features extracted from CT images. To fully explore multiple features describing CT images from different views, a unified latent representation is learned which can completely encode information from different aspects of features and is endowed with promising class structure for separability. Specifically, the completeness is guaranteed with a group of backward neural networks (each for one type of features), while by using class labels the representation is enforced to be compact within COVID-19/community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) and also a large margin is guaranteed between different types of pneumonia. In this way, our model can well avoid overfitting compared to the case of directly projecting highdimensional features into classes. Here, we summarise the design of FP-DBPs and their brightness, photostability, pKa, maturation rate, and binding affinity (Kd) characteristics. Then, we review the applications of FP-DBP in cells to study chromosome dynamics, DNA replication, transcription factors, DNA damage, and repair. Finally, we focus on single DNA molecule visualisation using FP-DBP.Objectives To describe the CT features and clinical characteristics of pediatric patients with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). Methods A total of 9 COVID-19 infected pediatric patients were included in this study. Clinical history, laboratory examination, and detailed CT imaging features were analyzed. All patients underwent the first CT scanning on the same day of being diagnosed by real-time reverse-transcription polymerase chain reaction (rRT-PCR). A low-dose CT scan was performed during follow-up. Results All the child patients had positive results. Four patients had cough and one patient had fever. One patient presented both cough and fever. Two children presented other symptoms like sore throat and stuffy nose. One child showed no clinical symptom. Five patients had positive initial CT findings with subtle lesions like ground-glass opacity (GGO) or spot-like mixed consolidation. Three patients were reported with negative results in the initial and follow-up CT examination. One patient was reported with initial negative CT findings but turning positive during the first follow-up. All patients had absorbed lesions on follow-up CT images after treatment. Conclusions Pediatric COVID-19 patients have certain imaging and clinical features as well as disease prognosis. In this study, we propose to conduct the diagnosis of COVID-19 with a series of features extracted from CT images. To fully explore multiple features describing CT images from different views, a unified latent representation is learned which can completely encode information from different aspects of features and is endowed with promising class structure for separability. Specifically, the completeness is guaranteed with a group of backward neural networks (each for one type of features), while by using class labels the representation is enforced to be compact within COVID-19/community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) and also a large margin is guaranteed between different types of pneumonia. In this way, our model can well avoid overfitting compared to the case of directly projecting highdimensional features into classes. Studies in several organisms have contributed to the understanding of heterochromatin and its biological importance. In bees of the tribe Meliponini, the presence of chromosomes with totally heterochromatic arms has been attributed to the mechanism of karyotype evolution in which this group accumulated heterochromatin to maintain telomere stability after centric fission events. In the present study, the use of classical and molecular cytogenetic techniques as well as automated image analysis software for the description of the karyotypes of Partamonachapadicola and P. nhambiquara bee species revealed variability in the compaction and patterns of chromatin structure. Although both species have the same chromosome number as other species in the genus Partamona (2n = 34), C-banding and image analyses indicated the existence of chromosomes with 3 regions of different staining intensities, suggesting a chromatin structure with distinct patterns and characteristics. Repetitive DNA probes hybridized only in the euchromatic regions, whereas the regions with intermediate staining intensity did not show any hybridization signals. The strongest effects from height occur toward the extremes of the height distribution. There is some variation in these relationships across three major developing regions (Latin America, Sub-Saharan Africa, and South Asia), and for education in particular, the association is shown to be stronger in countries with shorter average female height.Background The public health impacts of tropical cyclones (TCs) are expected to increase due to the continued growth of coastal populations and the increasing severity of these events. However, the impact of TCs on pregnant women, a vulnerable population, remains largely unknown. We aimed to estimate the association between prenatal exposure to TCs and risk of preterm birth in the eastern United States (US) and to assess whether the association varies by individual- and area-level characteristics. Methods We included data on 19,529,748 spontaneous singleton births from 1989 to 2002 across 378 US counties. In each county, we classified days as exposed to a TC when TC-associated peak sustained winds at the county's population-weighted center were >17.2 m/s (gale-force winds or greater). We defined preterm birth as births delivered prior to 37 completed weeks of gestation. We used distributed lag log-linear mixed-effects models to estimate the relative risk (RR) and absolute risk difference (ARD) for TC exposureearly preterm births and mothers living in more socially vulnerable counties but did not vary across strata of other hypothesized risk factors. Conclusions Maternal exposure to TC was associated with a higher risk of preterm birth. Our findings provide initial evidence that severe storms may trigger preterm birth.Objective It is important to train clinicians to maintain and optimise maternal and neonatal outcomes after vaginal twin delivery. Simulation-based training provides opportunities for training in a realistic way without harming patients. The aim of this study is to evaluate the effect of simulation-based training concerning twin vaginal delivery on knowledge and comfort of obstetrician-gynaecologists. Study design Obstetrician-gynaecologists participated in a twin vaginal delivery simulation between March 2018 and May 2019. Simulation-based training consisted of standardized patient interviews, didactic sessions and three different simulation-based scenarios internal podalic version and breech extraction, assisted vaginal delivery and vaginal breech delivery with problems of aftercoming head. Pre- and posttraining, participants were asked to fill out questionnaires exploring knowledge concerning vertex-vertex twin deliveries and vertex-nonvertex twin deliveries, level of comfort performing various obstetric md to 73.5% after training (p = 0.07). Conclusions Simulation-based training results in beneficial effects on knowledge and comfort concerning vaginal twin deliveries for obstetrician-gynaecologists. Studying fricative production in children with CIs allows to study how the partial transmission of speech sounds by cochlear implants influences children's speech production, and therefore to explore how perceptual abilities influence the late stages of phonological development. This acoustic study focuses on fricative production at three places of articulation (i.e., /f/, /s/ and /ʃ/), comparing productions by two groups of children (20 children with normal hearing (NH) vs. 13 children with CIs, all aged 5;7 to 10;7 years), and taking into account their consistency in coarticulation and the stability of their production across two different tasks (word-repetition and picture-naming).

There is some variation in these relationships across three major developing regions (Latin America, Sub-Saharan Africa, and South Asia), and for education in particular, the association is shown to be stronger in countries with shorter average female height.Background The public health impacts of tropical cyclones (TCs) are expected to increase due to the continued growth of coastal populations and the increasing severity of these events. However, the impact of TCs on pregnant women, a vulnerable population, remains largely unknown. We aimed to estimate the association between prenatal exposure to TCs and risk of preterm birth in the eastern United States (US) and to assess whether the association varies by individual- and area-level characteristics. Methods We included data on 19,529,748 spontaneous singleton births from 1989 to 2002 across 378 US counties. In each county, we classified days as exposed to a TC when TC-associated peak sustained winds at the county's population-weighted center were >17.2 m/s (gale-force winds or greater). We defined preterm birth as births delivered prior to 37 completed weeks of gestation. We used distributed lag log-linear mixed-effects models to estimate the relative risk (RR) and absolute risk difference (ARD) for TC exposureearly preterm births and mothers living in more socially vulnerable counties but did not vary across strata of other hypothesized risk factors. Conclusions Maternal exposure to TC was associated with a higher risk of preterm birth. Our findings provide initial evidence that severe storms may trigger preterm birth.Objective It is important to train clinicians to maintain and optimise maternal and neonatal outcomes after vaginal twin delivery. Simulation-based training provides opportunities for training in a realistic way without harming patients. The aim of this study is to evaluate the effect of simulation-based training concerning twin vaginal delivery on knowledge and comfort of obstetrician-gynaecologists. Study design Obstetrician-gynaecologists participated in a twin vaginal delivery simulation between March 2018 and May 2019. Simulation-based training consisted of standardized patient interviews, didactic sessions and three different simulation-based scenarios internal podalic version and breech extraction, assisted vaginal delivery and vaginal breech delivery with problems of aftercoming head. Clinicians must maintain vigilance against any suspected PICC-related infection in febrile patients with a PICC line. For echocardiographers, precise evaluation of the position of the PICC tip and the detection of endocarditis is important to devise the optimal clinical strategy.

Triclosan (TCS) is ubiquitous in a wide range of personal care and consumer products, and it is acute/chronic exposure may result in several nervous system disorders. Previous studies demonstrated TCS-induced abnormal expression of miRNAs, but no investigations focused on upstream changes of miRNAs and associated molecular mechanisms. Herein, phenotype observation and behavioral analysis confirmed that TCS exposure (0, 62.5, 125, 250 μg/L) led to developmental neurotoxicity in zebrafish larvae, especially for oligodendrocyte precursor cells (OPCs). High-throughput sequencing demonstrated the critical role of miR-219 in the differentiation of OPCs. Larvae with miR-219 depletion showed the same phenotype caused by TCS. Functional tests with miR-219 knock-down and over-expression showed that miR-219 promoted differentiation of OPCs by acting on myelination inhibitors. The miR-219 also protected against TCS-induced inhibition of cell differentiation. Several epigenetic features were identified to reveal potential upstream regulatory mechanisms of miR-219. In particular, five CpG islands hyper-methylated with increasing TCS concentrations in the promoter region of miR-219. TCS inhibited OPC differentiation by influencing epigenetic effects on miR-219-related pathways, contributing to severe neurotoxicity. These findings enhance our understanding of epigenetic mechanisms affecting demyelination diseases due to TCS exposure, and also provide theoretical guidance for early intervention and gene therapy of environmentally induced diseases.Drug-induced liver injury (DILI) represents one of the major causes why drugs have to be withdrawn from the market. In this study, we describe a new interaction between drug-exposed hepatocytes and natural killer (NK) cells. In a previous genome-wide expression analysis of primary human hepatocytes that had been exposed to clinically relevant concentrations of 148 drugs, we found that several activating ligands for NK cell receptors were regulated by various drugs (e.g., valproic acid, ketoconazole, promethazine, isoniazid). Especially expression of the activating NKG2D ligands (****, **** and ULBPs) and the NKp30 ligand B7-H6 were upregulated in primary human hepatocytes upon exposure to many different drugs. Using the human hepatocyte cell lines Huh7 and HepG2, we confirmed that protein levels of activating NK cell ligands were elevated after drug exposure. Hepatocyte cell lines or primary human hepatocytes co-cultivated with NK cells caused enhanced NK cell activation after pretreatment with drugs at in vivo relevant concentrations compared to solvent controls. Enhanced NK cell activation was evident by increased cytotoxicity against hepatocytes and interferon (IFN)-γ production. NK cell activation could be blocked by specific antibodies against activating NK cell receptors. The niche that triggers the proliferation of hepatocytes and the differentiation of LSPCs has been extensively studied. Meanwhile, in vitro culture systems for liver founder cells and organoids have been developed rapidly for mechanistic studies and potential therapeutic purposes. This review summarizes the cellular sources and niches that give rise to renewed hepatocytes during LR, and it also describes in vitro culture studies of those founder cells for future applications, as well as current reports for stem cell-based therapies for liver diseases.The competitiveness of the chemical and pharmaceutical industry is based on ensuring the required product quality while making optimum use of plants, raw materials, and energy. In this context, effective process control using reliable chemical process analytics secures global competitiveness. The setup of those control strategies often originate in process development but need to be transferable along the whole product life cycle. In this series of two contributions, we want to present a combined view on the future of PAT (process analytical technology), which is projected in smart labs (part 1) and smart sensors (part 2). In laboratories and pilot plants, offline chemical analytical methods are frequently used, where inline methods are also used in production. Here, a transferability from process development to the process in operation would be desirable. This can be obtained by establishing PAT methods for production already during process development or scale-up. However, the current PAT (Bakeev 2005, Org Process Res 193-62; Simon et al. 2015, Org Process Res Dev 193-62) must become more flexible and smarter. This can be achieved by introducing digitalization-based knowledge management, so that knowledge from product development enables and accelerates the integration of PAT. Conversely, knowledge from the production process will also contribute to product and process development. This contribution describes the future role of the laboratory and develops requirements therefrom. In this study, we developed and validated a simple and fast method for the determination of CBN in sediment samples using high-performance thin-layer chromatography (HPTLC) combined with electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS), thereby testing different extraction and cleanup procedures' as well as various sorbents and solvents for planar chromatography. This method shows a satisfactory overall analytical performance with an average recovery rate of 73%.
