    Long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) are a class of transcribed RNA molecules greater than 200 nucleotides in length. Although lncRNAs do not encode proteins, they play numerous functional roles in gene expression regulation. lncRNAs are notably abundant in brain; however, their neural functions remain largely unknown.

    We examined the expression of the lncRNA Gas5 in nucleus accumbens (NAc), a key brain reward region, of adult male **** after cocaine administration. We then performed viral-mediated overexpression of Gas5 in NAc neurons to determine its role in addiction-related behaviors. We also carried out RNA sequencing to investigate Gas5-mediated transcriptomic changes.

Viral-mediated overexpression of Gas5 in NAc neurons decreased cocaine-induced conditioned place preference.     Neurocritically ill patients are more likely to be comatose and suffer from dysphagia, conditions that inevitably require nutritional support. Inappropriate nutritional support may lead to refeeding syndrome (RFS). This study aimed to explore the incidence and outcome of RFS in neurocritically ill patients.

    We conducted a retrospective study among neurocritically ill patients who received total enteral nutrition for >72h in a university-affiliated hospital. RFS was defined as the occurrence of new-onset hypophosphatemia (<0.65mmol/L) within 72h of the commencement of nutritional support. The primary outcome was 6-month mortality. The secondary outcomes included 30-day mortality, neurocritical care unit (NCU) stay, and hospital length of stay.

    A total of 328 patients were enrolled, and 56 (17.1%) of them developed RFS within 72h of nutrition support. Significantly, we found that patients with high malnutrition universal screening tool (MUST) and sequential organ failure assessment (SOFA) scores were more likely to develop RFS.

Segregation analyses were carried out.Results The molecular investigation found two heterozygous variants c.1380 G > A (p.Trp460*) a novel nonsense variant, and c.1746 G > T (p Leu582=) a synonymous variant in TUBGCP4. The clinical phenotype was characterized by microcephaly, microphthalmia, chorioretinopathy, a punched-out retinal appearance, dysmorphic facial features, decreased visual acuity, and learning difficulties. The clinical features were similar to those described previously in children with MCCRP3. Patients were then classified according to the eligibility for SA biological therapy based on current prescription labels.Results From 544 patients in the cohort, 531 (97.6%) were included and 172 (32.4%) were identified as SA patients according to the ERS/ATS 2014 modified criteria. Of these 172 patients, 69 (40.1%) were ineligible for any of the biologicals approved for asthma (omalizumab, mepolizumab, reslizumab and benralizumab), 60 (34.9%) patients were eligible for one of the biological therapies, and 10 (5.8%) patients were eligible for all biological therapies.Conclusions More than half of patients with SA were eligible for biologic therapy in our study, but none of them received this form of treatment. Almost half of them were not eligible to any of the approved biologics, however. The variability and overlap in patients' eligibility highlight the importance of evaluating each patient individually for a more personalized treatment approach. Of 2066 eligible patients receiving first-line treatment, 17% (n = 340) received second-line treatment; of these, 23% (n = 77) received third-line treatment. Mean healthcare expenditures (treatment duration) for first, second, and third LOTs were $111,314 (124.5 days), $88,472 (80.8 days), and $103,365 (70.9 days), respectively. When adjusted to 30-day period costs, first, second, and third LOT healthcare expenditures increased to $26,825, $32,857, and $43,854, respectively. Patients with newly diagnosed and relapsed/refractory DLBCL incur a significant cost burden (for payers), and such costs increase as patients proceed through subsequent LOTs.Maintenance therapy after first autologous transplant (autoSCT) improves progression-free survival (PFS) and overall survival (OS) in multiple myeloma (MM). However, efficacy of maintenance therapy after second autoSCT is unknown. Outcomes were compared among three groups no-maintenance (n = 73), lenalidomide (n = 23), and bortezomib maintenance (n = 15).     In recent years, systemic chemotherapy has significantly improved the prognosis of metastatic colorectal cancer (CRC); however, different patients have different responses to chemotherapeutics.

    Dipeptidyl peptidase 9 (DPP9) is an enzyme in the dipeptidyl peptidase IV family that has been reported to increase drug sensitivity in acute myeloid leukemia. In this study, we examined the relationship between DPP9 expression and the prognosis of patients with CRC, as well as the role of DPP9 in anticancer drug resistance. Moreover, the effects of the DPP9 inhibitors talabostat and vildagliptin in CRC cell lines and primary cultured cells were assessed.

    High expression of DPP9 was associated with worse prognosis in 196 patients with CRC. Cell viability was markedly inhibited in CRC cell lines transfected with DPP9 small interfering RNA or small hairpin RNA. Talabostat suppressed proliferation in CRC cell lines and primary cultured cells, and increased their sensitivity to chemotherapy. Vildagliptin, a DPP family inhibitor currently administered for diabetes, also increased the sensitivity of CRC cells to anticancer drugs.

    DPP9 was a poor prognostic factor for CRC and could be a new therapeutic target, while vildagliptin could be used as a repositioned drug for CRC treatment.

Nitrizinc® Complex solution (NZCS) is a solution containing organic acids, nitric acid and zinc and copper salts that is applied topically to warts, producing mummification of the damaged tissue. It is considered to be an effective and well-tolerated treatment for genital and common warts. The aim of our study was to compare NZCS to CRYO in the treatment of AGW.

    We performed a prospective, multicentre, single-blind, randomised, superiority clinical study involving 120 patients, aged 18-55years, diagnosed with a first episode of AGW, with each patient having from three to ten AGW. In this study, we examined the relationship between DPP9 expression and the prognosis of patients with CRC, as well as the role of DPP9 in anticancer drug resistance. We discuss benefits and limitations, reviewing the literature, as well as recommendations on introducing a VFC service during the coronavirus pandemic and into the future.A narrative review identifying current literature on virtual fracture clinic outcomes when compared to traditional model fracture clinics in the UK. We identify nine relevant publications related to VFC.The Glasgow model, initiated in 2011, has become the benchmark. Clinical efficiency can be improved, reducing the number of emergency department (ED) referrals seen in VFC by 15-28% and face-to-face consultations by 65%. We discuss benefits and limitations, reviewing the literature, as well as recommendations on introducing a VFC service during the coronavirus pandemic and into the future.A narrative review identifying current literature on virtual fracture clinic outcomes when compared to traditional model fracture clinics in the UK. We identify nine relevant publications related to VFC.The Glasgow model, initiated in 2011, has become the benchmark. Clinical efficiency can be improved, reducing the number of emergency department (ED) referrals seen in VFC by 15-28% and face-to-face consultations by 65%. After review in the VFC, 33-60% of patients may be discharged. Some studies have shown no negative impact on the ED; the time to discharge was not increased. Patient satisfaction ranges from 91-97% using a VFC service, and there may be cost-saving benefits annually of £67,385 to £212,705. Non-attendance may be reduced by 75% and there are educational opportunities for trainees. However, evidence is limited; 28% of patients prefer face-to-face consultations and not all have access to internet or email (72%).We propose a pathway integrating the VFC model, whilst having senior orthopaedic decision makers available in the ED, during normal working hours, to cope with the pandemic.   • Introduction Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) have become one of the major causes of mortality among the Indian population. The costs of anticoagulant, antiplatelet, and fibrinolytic drugs that are used to treat various thromboembolic disorders and used as prophylactics for individuals at high risk of CVDs vary widely in the Indian pharmaceutical market. The aim of this study was to evaluate the cost variation of different brands of drug formulations and to compare the branded prices of the formulations with their corresponding generic and ceiling prices. Materials and methods This study followed an analytical method. Costs of various drugs were obtained from the October - December 2019 edition of the Current Index of Medical Specialities (CIMS) and December 2019 edition of the Monthly Index of Medical Specialities (MIMS) India. It is a rare side effect of statins, distinct from the more commonly recognized statin-induced myalgia, that is challenging to diagnose and treat. We describe a case of anti-HMGCR myopathy in a 59-year-old male with a prior history of statin intolerance presenting with markedly elevated creatinine kinase, myoglobinuria, and one month of progressive proximal muscle weakness after restarting atorvastatin 10 months prior to admission. High-dose glucocorticoids led to rapid clinical improvement, although the patient relapsed upon tapering. The objective of this study is to find the prevalence of parents visiting the neurology clinic who utilize CM to treat their children. Methods This is a cross-sectional study that was done at King Abdullah Specialized Children Hospital (KASCH), Riyadh, Saudi Arabia between 2018 and 2019. By using a self-administered questionnaire, data were collected to recognize the prevalence of using CM and to identify the commonest type or method. Results A total of 352 parents were given the questionnaire. The prevalence of CM usage among participant was 42%, the most common type of CM was Quran recitation at 66%, followed by herbal medicine at 30% and cautery at 26%. Conclusion Almost half of the parents who visited the neurology clinic at KASCH have used complementary medicine for their children, and nearly three-quarters of the parents who never used CM have thought about using it. However, the deployment, operation and maintenance of monitoring networks can represent a high cost for local governments. In certain locations, the use of naturally occurring plants for monitoring pollution can be a useful supplement of existing monitoring networks, and even provide information when other types of monitoring are lacking. In this work, we (i) determined the tissue carbon content and the δ13C values for the epiphytic CAM bromeliad Tillandsia recurvata and the relationship of both parameters with the existing CO concentrations in the Valley of Mexico basin and (ii) mapped the spatial distribution of such elemental and isotopic composition for this plant within the basin, in order to assess its potential as an atmospheric biomonitor of carbon monoxide, a pollutant with important repercussions on public health. The CO concentrations in the basin ranged from 0.41 ppm at rural locations to 0.81 ppm at urban sites. The carbon content of T. recurvata, which averaged 42.9 ± 0.34% (dry weight), was not influenced by the surrounding CO concentration. In contrast, the δ13C depended on the sites where the plants were collected. For example, the values were -13.2‰ in rural areas and as low as -17.5‰ in an urban site. Indeed, the isotopic values had a positive linear relationship with the atmospheric CO concentrations. Given the close relationship observed between the isotopic composition of T. recurvata with the CO concentrations in the Valley of Mexico, the δ13C values can be useful for the detection of atmospheric carbonaceous emissions.Most Scyphozoan jellyfish species have a metagenic life cycle involving a benthic, asexually reproducing polyp stage and a sexually reproducing medusa stage. Medusae can be large and conspicuous and most can be identified using morphological characteristics. Polyps on the other hand are small, live a cryptic life attached to hard substrates and often are difficult or impossible to distinguish based on morphology alone. Consequently, for many species the polyp stage has not been identified in the natural environment. We inspected hard substrates in various habitats for the presence of Scyphozoan polyps. Three polyps were found on Dogger Bank, Central North Sea, attached to the inside of the umbo of empty valves of the bivalves Mactra stultorum and Spisula subtruncata. One polyp was accompanied by four podocysts. With this knowledge, the inside of bivalve shells washed ashore in Oostende (Belgium) was inspected and supposed podocysts on the inside of empty valves of Cerastoderma edule and Spisula elliptica were found.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the cost variation of different brands of drug formulations and to compare the branded prices of the formulations with their corresponding generic and ceiling prices. Materials and methods This study followed an analytical method. Costs of various drugs were obtained from the October - December 2019 edition of the Current Index of Medical Specialities (CIMS) and December 2019 edition of the Monthly Index of Medical Specialities (MIMS) India. It is a rare side effect of statins, distinct from the more commonly recognized statin-induced myalgia, that is challenging to diagnose and treat. We describe a case of anti-HMGCR myopathy in a 59-year-old male with a prior history of statin intolerance presenting with markedly elevated creatinine kinase, myoglobinuria, and one month of progressive proximal muscle weakness after restarting atorvastatin 10 months prior to admission. High-dose glucocorticoids led to rapid clinical improvement, although the patient relapsed upon tapering. The objective of this study is to find the prevalence of parents visiting the neurology clinic who utilize CM to treat their children. Methods This is a cross-sectional study that was done at King Abdullah Specialized Children Hospital (KASCH), Riyadh, Saudi Arabia between 2018 and 2019. By using a self-administered questionnaire, data were collected to recognize the prevalence of using CM and to identify the commonest type or method. Results A total of 352 parents were given the questionnaire. The prevalence of CM usage among participant was 42%, the most common type of CM was Quran recitation at 66%, followed by herbal medicine at 30% and cautery at 26%. Conclusion Almost half of the parents who visited the neurology clinic at KASCH have used complementary medicine for their children, and nearly three-quarters of the parents who never used CM have thought about using it. Therefore, CM is common in the Saudi Arabian culture.Atmospheric pollution has become a serious threat for human health and the environment. However, the deployment, operation and maintenance of monitoring networks can represent a high cost for local governments. In certain locations, the use of naturally occurring plants for monitoring pollution can be a useful supplement of existing monitoring networks, and even provide information when other types of monitoring are lacking. In this work, we (i) determined the tissue carbon content and the δ13C values for the epiphytic CAM bromeliad Tillandsia recurvata and the relationship of both parameters with the existing CO concentrations in the Valley of Mexico basin and (ii) mapped the spatial distribution of such elemental and isotopic composition for this plant within the basin, in order to assess its potential as an atmospheric biomonitor of carbon monoxide, a pollutant with important repercussions on public health. The CO concentrations in the basin ranged from 0.41 ppm at rural locations to 0.81 ppm at urban sites. The carbon content of T. recurvata, which averaged 42.9 ± 0.34% (dry weight), was not influenced by the surrounding CO concentration. In contrast, the δ13C depended on the sites where the plants were collected. For example, the values were -13.2‰ in rural areas and as low as -17.5‰ in an urban site. Indeed, the isotopic values had a positive linear relationship with the atmospheric CO concentrations. Given the close relationship observed between the isotopic composition of T. recurvata with the CO concentrations in the Valley of Mexico, the δ13C values can be useful for the detection of atmospheric carbonaceous emissions.Most Scyphozoan jellyfish species have a metagenic life cycle involving a benthic, asexually reproducing polyp stage and a sexually reproducing medusa stage. Medusae can be large and conspicuous and most can be identified using morphological characteristics. Polyps on the other hand are small, live a cryptic life attached to hard substrates and often are difficult or impossible to distinguish based on morphology alone. Consequently, for many species the polyp stage has not been identified in the natural environment. We inspected hard substrates in various habitats for the presence of Scyphozoan polyps. Three polyps were found on Dogger Bank, Central North Sea, attached to the inside of the umbo of empty valves of the bivalves Mactra stultorum and Spisula subtruncata. One polyp was accompanied by four podocysts. With this knowledge, the inside of bivalve shells washed ashore in Oostende (Belgium) was inspected and supposed podocysts on the inside of empty valves of Cerastoderma edule and Spisula elliptica were found.

  • The Affordable Care Act (ACA) dramatically expanded health insurance, but questions remain regarding its effects on health. We focus on older adults for whom health insurance has greater potential to improve health and well-being because of their greater health care needs relative to younger adults. We further focus on low-income adults who were the target of the Medicaid expansion. We believe our study provides the first evidence of the health-related effects of ACA Medicaid expansion using the Health and Retirement Study (HRS). Using geo-coded data from 2010 to 2016, we estimate difference-in-differences models, comparing changes in outcomes before and after the Medicaid expansion in treatment and control states among a sample of over 3,000 unique adults aged 50 to 64 with income below 100% of the federal poverty level. The HRS allows us to examine morbidity outcomes not available in administrative data, providing evidence of the mechanisms underlying emerging evidence of mortality reductions due to expanded insurance coverage among the near-elderly. We find that the Medicaid expansion was associated with a 15 percentage point increase in Medicaid coverage which was largely offset by declines in other types of insurance. We find improvements in several measures of health including a 12% reduction in metabolic syndrome; a 32% reduction in complications from metabolic syndrome; an 18% reduction in the likelihood of gross motor skills difficulties; and a 34% reduction in compromised activities of daily living (ADLs). Our results thus suggest that the Medicaid expansion led to improved physical health for low-income, older adults.Objectives To examine associations of perceived outdoor environment with the prevalence and development of adaptive (e.g., slower pace) and maladaptive (e.g., avoiding walking) modifications in walking 2 km among older people. Likewise, there are recent reports on their beneficial effects on brain functions. The hypothalamus is the central part of the brain that regulates food intake by means of the production of food intake-regulatory hypothalamic neuropeptides, as neuropeptide Y (NPY), orexin A and pro-opiomelanocortin (POMC), and neurotransmitters, such as dopamine and serotonin. Other mesolimbic areas, such as the hippocampus, are also involved in the control of food intake. In this study, the effect of a high fat diet (HFD) alone or supplemented with these additives on brain neuropeptides and neurotransmitters was assessed in forty-three young pigs fed for 10 weeks with a control diet (T1), a high fat diet (HFD, T2), and HFD with vegetal protein supplemented with Bifidobacterium breve CECT8242 alone (T3) or in combination with omega-3 fatty acids (T4). A HFD provoked changes in regulatory neuropeptides and 3,4-dihydroxyphenylacetic acid (DOPAC) in the hypothalamus and alterations mostly in the dopaminergic system in the ventral hippocampus. Supplementation of the HFD with B. breve CECT8242, especially in combination with omega-3 fatty acids, was able to partially reverse the effects of HFD. Correlations between productive and neurochemical parameters supported these findings. These results confirm that pigs are an appropriate animal model alternative to rodents for the study of the effects of HFD on weight gain and obesity. Furthermore, they indicate the potential benefits of probiotics and omega-3 fatty acids on brain function.Developing countries continue to contribute significantly to the global burden of childhood mortality due to infectious diseases. Infections leading to diseases like diarrhoea, pneumonia and meningitis account for millions of deaths annually. Most of these diseases are preventable by vaccination and therefore global vaccination rates have risen substantially with clear benefits. But paradoxically, the vaccines have demonstrated lower immunogenicity in developing countries as compared to their industrialised counterparts. Malnutrition in resource poor settings along with repeated polymicrobial infections at early age are some of the reasons for the differences in vaccine efficacy in different settings. Recent studies indicate that the gastrointestinal microbiota possibly influences maturation of immune system as well as vaccine efficacy. In this review we discuss evidences from in vitro, animal and human studies showing that probiotics can positively modulate gut microbiota composition and exert immunomodulatory effects on the host. We also discuss how they should be evaluated for their ability to improve vaccine performance especially in low resource settings.Salmonella Heidelberg is one of the most common serovar causing foodborne illnesses. To limit the development of digestive bacterial infection, food supplements containing probiotic bacteria can be proposed. Commensal non-toxigenic Bacteroides fragilis has recently been suggested as a next-generation probiotic candidate. By using an original triple co-culture model including Caco-2 cells (representing human enterocytes), HT29-MTX (representing mucus-secreting goblet cells), and M cells differentiated from Caco-2 by addition of Raji B lymphocytes, bacterial translocation was evaluated. The data showed that S. Heidelberg could translocate in the triple co-culture model with high efficiency, whereas for B. fragilis a weak translocation was obtained. When cells were exposed to both bacteria, S. Heidelberg translocation was inhibited. The cell-free supernatant of B. fragilis also inhibited S. Heidelberg translocation without impacting epithelial barrier integrity. This supernatant did not affect the growth of S. Heidelberg.

  • The Connectomes Related to Human Diseases (CRHD) initiative was developed with the Human Connectome Project (HCP) to provide high-resolution, open-access, multi-modal MRI data to better understand the neural correlates of human disease. Here, we present an introduction to a CRHD project, the Boston Adolescent Neuroimaging of Depression and Anxiety (BANDA) study, which is collecting multimodal neuroimaging, clinical, and neuropsychological data from 225 adolescents (ages 14-17), 150 of whom are expected to have a diagnosis of depression and/or anxiety. Our transdiagnostic recruitment approach samples the full spectrum of depressed/anxious symptoms and their comorbidity, consistent with NIMH Research Domain Criteria (RDoC). We focused on an age range that is critical for brain development and for the onset of mental illness. This project sought to harmonize imaging sequences, hardware, and functional tasks with other HCP studies, although some changes were made to canonical HCP methods to accommodate our study population and questions. We present a thorough overview of our imaging sequences, hardware, and scanning protocol. We detail similarities and differences between this study and other HCP studies. We evaluate structural-, diffusion-, and functional-image-quality measures that may be influenced by clinical factors (e.g., disorder, symptomatology). Signal-to-noise and motion estimates from the first 140 adolescents suggest minimal influence of clinical factors on image quality. We anticipate enrollment of an additional 85 participants, most of whom are expected to have a diagnosis of anxiety and/or depression. Clinical and neuropsychological data from the first 140 participants are currently freely available through the National Institute of Mental Health Data Archive (NDA). HYPOTHESIS In solvent casting, colloidal nanocrystal self-assembly patterns are controlled by a mix of cohesive and repulsive interactions that promote destabilization-induced self-assembly (DISA) or evaporation-induced self-assembly (EISA). Tuning the strength and nature of the stabilization mechanisms may allow repulsive interactions to govern self-assembly during the casting of colloidal cellulose nanocrystal (CNC) suspensions. EXPERIMENTS We propose a tool to classify the level of electrostatic and solvation-induced stabilizations based on two solvent parameters only dielectric constant, ε, and chemical affinity for CNCs, in terms of Hansen Solubility Parameters, Ra. These criteria are applied to study CNC self-assembly in solvent casting experiments in various media and binary mixtures. FINDINGS In solvent casting of suspensions stabilized through a combination of electrostatic and solvation effects, the primarily governing mechanism is EISA, which leads to the formation of chiral nematic domains and optically active thin films. By classifying media according to their stabilization mechanisms, this work establishes that the behavior of CNC suspensions in solvent casting may be predicted from solvent parameters only. In this work we presented a novel computational model of precipitation polymerization allowing one to obtain core-shell microgels via a realistic cross-linking process based on the experimental procedure. We showed that the cross-linker-monomer reactivity ratios r are responsible for the microgel internal structure. Values of r lower than 1 correspond to the case when alternating sequences occur at the early reaction stages; this leads to the formation of microgels with pronounced core-shell structure. The distribution of dangling ends for small values of r becomes bimodal with two well-distinguished peaks, which correspond to the core (short dangling ends) and corona (long dangling ends) regions. The density profiles confirm the existence of two distinct regions for small r a densely cross-linked core and a loose corona entirely consisting of dangling ends with no cross-linker. The consumption of the cross-linker in the course in the microgel formation was found to be in a perfect agreement with the predictions of Monte Carlo (**) model in the sequence space. Saponins are naturally occurring biosurfactants present in a wide range of plant species. They are highly surface active glycosides, and are used to stabilise foams and emulsions in foods, beverages and cosmetics. They have great potential for an even wider range of applications, especially when mixed with different synthetic surfactants. Understanding those mixing properties are key to the exploitation of saponins in that wider range of potential applications. The surface adsorption properties of the saponin, escin, with two conventional nonionic surfactants, polyethylene glycol surfactants, have been studied at the air-water interface using neutron reflectivity, NR, and surface tension, ST. Although the saponin and polyethylene glycol, CnEOm, surfactants are both nonionic the disparity in the relative surface activities and packing constraints result in non-ideal mixing. Comparison with the predictions of the pseudo phase approximation requires the inclusion of the quadratic, cubic and quartic terms in the expansion of the excess free energy of mixing to explain the variations in the surface composition. For escin/pentaethylene glycol monododecyl ether, C12EO5, the interaction is attractive and close to ideal. For escin/octaethylene glycol monododecyl ether, C12EO8, it is repulsive and close to the criteria for demixing. The differences in mixing behaviour are attributed to greater packing constraints imposed by the larger ethylene oxide headgroup of the C12EO8 compared to C12EO5. The PbO2 electrodes of lead-acid batteries are normally applied as the positive electrodes in lead-carbon hybrid capacitors. However, the effective utilization rate of active materials in the electrodes is only about 12.5%, leading to a low energy density of lead-carbon hybrid capacitors. In this paper, a nano-SiO2 doped PbO2 electrode was prepared by the co-electrodeposition method. The energy density of the lead-carbon hybrid capacitor using a nano-SiO2/PbO2 electrode can reach 61 Wh kg-1 at 3 A g-1. The results show that the inert nano-SiO2 can establish electrolyte diffusion channels in the positive electrode, and thus improve the effective utilization rate of active materials. This work provides a new idea for the design and development of the positive materials for high-performance lead-carbon hybrid capacitors.

Values of r lower than 1 correspond to the case when alternating sequences occur at the early reaction stages; this leads to the formation of microgels with pronounced core-shell structure. The distribution of dangling ends for small values of r becomes bimodal with two well-distinguished peaks, which correspond to the core (short dangling ends) and corona (long dangling ends) regions. The density profiles confirm the existence of two distinct regions for small r a densely cross-linked core and a loose corona entirely consisting of dangling ends with no cross-linker. The consumption of the cross-linker in the course in the microgel formation was found to be in a perfect agreement with the predictions of Monte Carlo (MC) model in the sequence space. Saponins are naturally occurring biosurfactants present in a wide range of plant species. They are highly surface active glycosides, and are used to stabilise foams and emulsions in foods, beverages and cosmetics. They have great potential for an even wider range of applications, especially when mixed with different synthetic surfactants. Understanding those mixing properties are key to the exploitation of saponins in that wider range of potential applications. The surface adsorption properties of the saponin, escin, with two conventional nonionic surfactants, polyethylene glycol surfactants, have been studied at the air-water interface using neutron reflectivity, NR, and surface tension, ST. Although the saponin and polyethylene glycol, CnEOm, surfactants are both nonionic the disparity in the relative surface activities and packing constraints result in non-ideal mixing. Comparison with the predictions of the pseudo phase approximation requires the inclusion of the quadratic, cubic and quartic terms in the expansion of the excess free energy of mixing to explain the variations in the surface composition. For escin/pentaethylene glycol monododecyl ether, C12EO5, the interaction is attractive and close to ideal. For escin/octaethylene glycol monododecyl ether, C12EO8, it is repulsive and close to the criteria for demixing. The differences in mixing behaviour are attributed to greater packing constraints imposed by the larger ethylene oxide headgroup of the C12EO8 compared to C12EO5. The PbO2 electrodes of lead-acid batteries are normally applied as the positive electrodes in lead-carbon hybrid capacitors. However, the effective utilization rate of active materials in the electrodes is only about 12.5%, leading to a low energy density of lead-carbon hybrid capacitors. In this paper, a nano-SiO2 doped PbO2 electrode was prepared by the co-electrodeposition method. The energy density of the lead-carbon hybrid capacitor using a nano-SiO2/PbO2 electrode can reach 61 Wh kg-1 at 3 A g-1. The results show that the inert nano-SiO2 can establish electrolyte diffusion channels in the positive electrode, and thus improve the effective utilization rate of active materials. This work provides a new idea for the design and development of the positive materials for high-performance lead-carbon hybrid capacitors.
