  • Alzheimer's disease (AD) and Parkinson's disease (PD) are the two most prevalent age-related neurodegenerative diseases, and currently no effective clinical treatments exist for either, despite decades of clinical trials. The failure to translate preclinical findings into effective treatments is indicative of a problem in the current evaluation pipeline for potential therapeutics. At present, there are no useful animal models for AD and PD research that reflect the entire biology of the diseases, specifically, the more common non-Mendelian forms. Whereas the field continues to seek suitable rodent models for investigating potential therapeutics for these diseases, rodent models have still been used primarily for preclinical studies. Here, we advocate for a paradigm shift toward the application of human-induced pluripotent stem cell (hiPSC)-derived systems for PD and AD modeling and the development of improved human-based models in a dish for drug discovery and preclinical assessment of therapeutic targets.We evaluated the cardiac function recovery following skeletal myoblast cell-sheet transplantation and the long-term outcomes after applying this treatment in 23 patients with ischemic cardiomyopathy. We defined patients as "responders" when their left ventricular ejection fraction remained unchanged or improved at 6 months after treatment. At 6 months, 16 (69.6%) patients were defined as responders, and the average increase in left ventricular ejection fraction was 4.9%. The responders achieved greater improvement degrees in left ventricular and hemodynamic function parameters, and they presented improved exercise capacity. During the follow-up period (56 ± 28 months), there were four deaths and the overall 5-year survival rate was 95%. Although the responders showed higher freedom from mortality and/or heart failure admission (5-year, 81% versus 0%; p = 0.0002), both groups presented an excellent 5-year survival rate (5-year, 93% versus 100%; p = 0.297) that was higher than that predicted using the Seattle Heart Failure Model. The stepwise logistic regression analysis showed that the preoperative estimated glomerular filtration rate and the left ventricular end-systolic volume index were independently associated with the recovery progress. Approximately 70% of patients with "no-option" ischemic cardiomyopathy responded well to the cell-sheet transplantation. Preoperative renal and left ventricular function might predict the patients' response to this treatment.

    Based on a systematic literature search we analyzed the absolute and risk-adjusted in-house lethality as well as the rate of complications and the failure to rescue after abdominal surgery in Germany. The hospitals were grouped in quintiles according to the volume of treatment.

    Few studies have investigated the learning curves of minimally invasive donor nephrectomy (MIDN) using the cumulative sum (CUSUM) analysis. In addition, no study has compared the learning curves of the different surgical MIDN techniques in one cohort study using the CUSUM analysis. This study aims to evaluate and compare learning curves for several MIDN using the CUSUM analysis.

    A retrospective review of consecutive donors, who underwent MIDN between 1997 and 2019, was conducted. Three laparoscopic-assisted techniques were applied in our institution and included for analysis laparoscopic (LDN), hand-assisted retroperitoneoscopic (HARP), and robot-assisted laparoscopic (RADN) donor nephrectomy. The outcomes were compared based on surgeon volume to develop learning curves for the operative time per surgeon.

    Out of 1895 MIDN, 1365 (72.0%) were LDN, 427 (22.5%) were HARP, and 103 (5.4%) were RADN. The median operative time and median blood loss were 179 (IQR, 139-230) minutes and 100 (IQR, 40-200) mL, respectively. The incidence of major complication was 1.2% with no mortality, and the median hospital stay was three (IQR, 3-4) days. The CUSUM analysis resulted in learning curves, defined by decreased operative time, of 23 cases in LDN, 45 cases in HARP, and 26 cases in RADN.

    Our study shows different learning curves in three MIDN techniques with equal post-operative complications. The LDN and RADN learning curves are shorter than that of the hand-assisted donor nephrectomy. Our observations can be helpful for informing the development of teaching requirements for fellows to be trained in MIDN.

Although considerable literature exists on the protein framework underlying GPCR endocytosis, the role of membrane lipids in this process remains largely unexplored. In order to explore the role of membrane cholesterol (an essential and important lipid in higher eukaryotes) in GPCR endocytosis, we monitored the effect of acute cholesterol depletion using methyl-β-cyclodextrin (MβCD) on endocytosis and intracellular trafficking of the serotonin1A receptor, an important neurotransmitter GPCR. Our results show that the serotonin1A receptor exhibits agonist-induced clathrin-mediated endocytosis with a concentration-dependent inhibition in internalization with increasing concentrations of MβCD, which was restored upon cholesterol replenishment.

  • PURPOSE There have been no large-scale studies on whether metformin therapy might have a potential benefit for lowering mortality. Thus, this study aimed to investigate the association between prior metformin therapy and the development of sepsis as well as the association between prior metformin therapy and 30-day mortality in sepsis patients. METHODS We evaluated adult diabetes patients registered in the 2010 sample cohort database of the National Health Insurance Service in South Korea. Diabetes was identified according to the International Classification of Disease-10 diagnostic system (E10-E14). https://www.selleckchem.com/products/akba.html The cohorts were divided into the metformin user group (i.e., those who had been prescribed continuous oral metformin over a period of ≥ 90 days) and the control group (i.e., all other individuals). The primary endpoint was the development of sepsis between 2011 and 2015, and the secondary endpoint was 30-day mortality among diabetes patients diagnosed with sepsis. RESULTS In total, 77,337 patients (34,041 in the metformin user group and 43,296 in the control group) were included in the analysis, among whom 2512 patients (3.2%) were diagnosed with sepsis between 2011 and 2015. After propensity score adjustment, metformin use was not significantly associated with both the risk of sepsis (OR 0.92, 95%CI 0.82-1.03; P = 0.143) and the risk of 30-day mortality after diagnosis of sepsis (OR 0.94, 95%CI 0.75-1.17; P = 0.571). CONCLUSIONS Prior metformin therapy was not significantly associated with the risk of sepsis and 30-day mortality after diagnosis of sepsis among diabetes patients.It is thought that despite highly variable phenotypic expression, 70-80% of all epileptic cases are caused by one or more genetic mutations. Next generation sequencing technologies, such as whole exome sequencing (WES), can be used in a diagnostic or research setting to identify genetic mutations which may have significant prognostic implications for patients and their families. In this study, 398 genes associated with epilepsy or recurrent seizures were stratified into tiers based on genotype-phenotype concordance, tissue gene expression, frequency of affected individuals with mutations and evidence from functional and family studies. WES was completed on 14 DNA samples (2 with known mutations in SCN1A and 12 with no known mutations) from individuals diagnosed with epilepsy using an Ion AmpliSeq approach. WES confirmed positive SCN1A mutations in two samples. In n = 5/12 samples (S-3 to -14) we identified potentially causative mutations across five different genes. S-5 was identified to have a novel missense mutation in CCM2; S-6 a novel frameshift mutation identified in ADGRV1; S-10 had a previously reported pathogenic mutation in PCDH19, whilst a novel missense mutation in PCDH19 was shown in S-12; and S-13 identified to have separate missense mutations in KCNA2 and NPRL3. Phylogenetic analysis indicated the clustering of species based on the presence or absence of valvular striations. CRISPR/Cas9-mediated loss-of-function leads to dysregulated Ca2+ handling in human-induced pluripotent stem cell-derived cardiomyocytes. The downregulation of prohypertrophic, proapoptotic and Ca2+-signaling pathways upon CRISPLD1-KO and its upregulation in the transition to failure implicates a contribution to adverse remodeling. The aim of this study is to compare the prevalence of several psychopathological diagnoses, the presence of prodromal symptoms, and global functioning in offspring of parents with schizophrenia or bipolar disorder and in offspring of controls at baseline and 2-year follow-up. This study included 41 offspring of parents with schizophrenia, 90 offspring of parents with bipolar disorder, and 107 offspring of controls (mean age 11.7 ± 3.2 at baseline and 13.9 ± 3.2 at follow-up). The prevalence of psychopathology and comorbidity was higher in offspring of parents with schizophrenia and offspring of parents with bipolar disorder than in offspring of controls at baseline and at 2-year follow-up. Interestingly, mood disorders were more prevalent in offspring of parents with bipolar disorder and disruptive disorders were more prevalent in offspring of parents with schizophrenia.

  • Multifunctional nanomaterials with the ability to respond to near-infrared (NIR) light stimulation are vital for the development of highly efficient biomedical nanoplatforms with a polytherapeutic approach. Inspired by the mesoglea structure of jellyfish bells, a biomimetic multifunctional nanostructured pillow with fast photothermal responsiveness for NIR light-controlled on-demand drug delivery is developed. We fabricate a nanoplatform with several hierarchical levels designed to generate a series of controlled, rapid, and reversible cascade-like structural changes upon NIR light irradiation. The mechanical contraction of the nanostructured platform, resulting from the increase of temperature to 42 °C due to plasmonic hydrogel-light interaction, causes a rapid expulsion of water from the inner structure, passing through an electrospun membrane anchored onto the hydrogel core. The mutual effects of the rise in temperature and water flow stimulate the release of molecules from the nanofibers. To expand the potential applications of the biomimetic platform, the photothermal responsiveness to reach the typical temperature level for performing photothermal therapy (PTT) is designed. The on-demand drug model penetration into pig tissue demonstrates the efficiency of the nanostructured platform in the rapid and controlled release of molecules, while the high biocompatibility confirms the pillow potential for biomedical applications based on the NIR light-driven multitherapy strategy.The twilight zone contains the largest biomass of the world's ocean. Large white sharks migrate seasonally from coastal habitats, where they primarily forage on pinnipeds, to oceanic offshore habitats. Tagging studies suggest that while offshore, white sharks may forage at depth on mesopelagic species, yet no biochemical evidence exists. Here, we used mercury isotopic composition to assess the dietary origin of MeHg contamination in white sharks from the Northeast Pacific Ocean. We estimated that a minimum of 72% of the MeHg accumulated by white sharks originates from the consumption of mesopelagic prey, while a maximum of 25% derives from pinnipeds. In addition to highlighting the potential of mercury isotopes to decipher the complex ecological cycle of marine predators, our study provides evidence that the twilight zone constitutes a crucial foraging habitat for these large predators, which had been suspected for over a decade. Climate change is predicted to expand the production of mesopelagic MeHg and modify the mesopelagic biomass globally. Angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) receptor has been shown to be the cornerstone of SARS-CoV-2 infection and possibly plays a significant role in the occurrence of renal injury. The pathogenesis of AKI is likely multifactorial that involves not only direct viral invasion but also dysregulated immune response in the form of cytokine storm, ischemia to kidneys, hypercoagulable state, and rhabdomyolysis, among others.     Consecutive patients (n=331) who presented to the emergency department and underwent chest CT and reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) with a time interval <7 days, which were subsequently found to be consistent with Sars-CoV-2 infection, were enrolled retrospectively. Two experienced radiologists evaluated the images in consensus, recording the number of pulmonary lobes with ground-glass opacities and with consolidation. A CT score was subsequently calculated based on the percentage involvement of each lobe. Clinical symptoms, comorbidities, and level of required hospitalisation were noted. Based on current observational data, AKI is the 2nd most common cause of morbidity and mortality behind ARDS in SARS-CoV-2 patients. Angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) receptor has been shown to be the cornerstone of SARS-CoV-2 infection and possibly plays a significant role in the occurrence of renal injury. The pathogenesis of AKI is likely multifactorial that involves not only direct viral invasion but also dysregulated immune response in the form of cytokine storm, ischemia to kidneys, hypercoagulable state, and rhabdomyolysis, among others. Efflux pump activity was measured using ethidium bromide (EtBr) and the biofilm forming ability of the individual strains was assessed using a number of phenotypic assays. All isolates were resistant to tetracyclines and a number of isolates expressed resistance to fluoroquinolones which was also confirmed in silico by the presence of these resistance markers. Amino acid substitutions in the quinolone resistance-determining regions were identified in all isolates and the presence of several siderophores were also noted. Whole genomesequence (WGS) data showed different STs that were not associated with epidemic STs or virulent clonal complexes. Seven isolates formed biofilms in minimal media with some isolates showing better adaptation at 25 °C while others at 37 °C. At each farm, ear notch samples from calves less than six months old and bulk tank milk (BTM) samples were collected. A total of 901 ear notch samples and 329 BTM samples from 183 tanks were sampled. A total of 20 (20/901, 2.22 %) ear notch samples from 10 (10/92, 10.86 %) farms tested positive for BVDV by IDEXX Antigen Point-of-Care (POC) Test kit and real-time quantitative reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR). In addition, 80 of 183 (80/183, 43.7 %) BTM samples from 43 (43/92, 46.7 %) farms were identified as positive by qRT-PCR. The RNA of positive and suspect samples identified by qRT-PCR was subjected to 5'- untranslated region (UTR) amplification by nested RT-PCR and then sequenced. A total of 119 sequences were obtained and phylogenetic analysis of these 5'-UTR sequences revealed the presence of eight different subgenotypes of BVDV-1 including 1a (n = 37, 31.09 %), 1b (n = 5, 4.20 %), 1c (n = 34, 28.57 %), 1d (n = 2, 1.68 %), 1m (n = 25, 21.01 %), 1q (n = 6, 5.04 %), and two unknown subgenotypes which were tentatively typed as "BVDV-1v" (n = 8, 6.72 %) and "BVDV-1w" (n = 2, 1.68 %), respectively.     Circulating TMAO is positively associated with an increased risk of hypertension and other cardiometabolic disorders in adults. Systematic Review Registration PROSPERO identification number CRD42019138296.It is hypothesized that under optimal glycemic control (GC), there is no difference in the survival of implants placed in the zygomatic bone of edentulous patient with and without type-2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Purpose The aim was to assess the influence of GC on survival of implants placed in the zygomatic bone of edentulous patient with and without T2DM at 10-years' follow-up. Twenty patients with T2DM (10 with poorly- and 10 with well-controlled T2DM) and 12 patients without T2DM were included. Hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) levels were recorded and demographic data was collected from all participants. Peri-implant inflammatory parameters (plaque index [PI], probing depth [PD], crestal bone loss [BL] and gingival index [GI]) were measured in all patients. Group comparisons were done and P-values, which were less than 0.01 were indicative of statistical significance. Twenty and 12 male patients with and without T2DM, respectively were included. Among patients with T2DM, 10 and 10 individuals had poorly- and well-controlled T2DM, respectively. The mean HbA1c levels were significantly higher in patients with poorly- (9.2 ± 0.7%) compared with well-controlled T2DM (4.8 ± 0.3%) (P less then 0.01) and non-diabetic individuals (4.6 ± 0.3%) (P less then 0.01). The crestal BL on the mesial (P less then 0.01) and distal (P less then 0.01) surfaces, PD (P less then 0.01), PI (P less then 0.01), and GI (P less then 0.01) were significantly higher around all zygoma implants placed in patients with poorly-controlled T2DM compared with patients with well-controlled T2DM and patients without T2DM.     From planting to distribution, fresh produce can be contaminated by humans, water, animals, soil, equipment, and the environment. Produce growers play an essential role in managing and minimizing on-farm food safety risks. Because of an increase in public awareness about produce safety, farmer food safety education has become an important research and extension topic. This review article summarizes findings by researchers who have evaluated produce growers' food safety knowledge and attitudes and the effectiveness of food safety educational programs for growers. A search of on-line databases, journal archives, conference abstracts, and reference lists of relevant studies was conducted to locate peer-reviewed articles on produce growers' food safety knowledge and behavioral changes. Study selection criteria included publications in English, publication between 2000 and 2019, and a focus on one of six topics handling of agricultural water, soil amendments, domesticated animal and wildlife management, worker health and hygiene, food safety plans and record-keeping, and cleaning and sanitation. Forty-three published articles were included in the analysis. Handling of agricultural water and soil amendments were the two topics least understood by growers, whereas worker health and hygiene were the best understood. Food safety educational interventions were evaluated in 13 studies, and most studies used in-person workshops and self-reported pre- and postintervention knowledge assessments.     Long noncoding (lnc)RNAs potently regulate gene expression programs in physiology and disease. Here, we describe a key function for lncRNA OIP5-AS1 in myogenesis, the process whereby myoblasts differentiate into myotubes during muscle development and muscle regeneration after injury. In human myoblasts, OIP5-AS1 levels increased robustly early in myogenesis, and its loss attenuated myogenic differentiation and potently reduced the levels of the myogenic transcription factor MEF2C. This effect relied upon the partial complementarity of OIP5-AS1 with MEF2C mRNA and the presence of HuR, an RNA-binding protein (RBP) with affinity for both transcripts. Remarkably, HuR binding to MEF2C mRNA, which stabilized MEF2C mRNA and increased MEF2C abundance, was lost after OIP5-AS1 silencing, suggesting that OIP5-AS1 might serve as a scaffold to enhance HuR binding to MEF2C mRNA, in turn increasing MEF2C production. These results highlight a mechanism whereby a lncRNA promotes myogenesis by enhancing the interaction of an RBP and a myogenic mRNA.
    Health-related quality of life (HRQOL) is typically examined from a deficit standpoint, meaning that little is known about factors associated with higher HRQOL in pediatric illness samples. The aim of the current study was to investigate demographic, disease, and temperamental factors associated with child and parent-report of HRQOL in youth newly diagnosed with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD).

    Participants included 52 youth ages 8-17 diagnosed with IBD and their caregivers who each completed ratings of the child's HRQOL. Parents rated their child's emotional reactivity, conceptualized as a temperamental risk factor, and adaptability, conceptualized as a temperamental protective factor. Disease symptoms were rated by youth, and physician global assessment of disease activity was obtained.

Purpose The aim was to assess the influence of GC on survival of implants placed in the zygomatic bone of edentulous patient with and without T2DM at 10-years' follow-up. Twenty patients with T2DM (10 with poorly- and 10 with well-controlled T2DM) and 12 patients without T2DM were included. Hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) levels were recorded and demographic data was collected from all participants. Peri-implant inflammatory parameters (plaque index [PI], probing depth [PD], crestal bone loss [BL] and gingival index [GI]) were measured in all patients. Group comparisons were done and P-values, which were less than 0.01 were indicative of statistical significance. Twenty and 12 male patients with and without T2DM, respectively were included. Among patients with T2DM, 10 and 10 individuals had poorly- and well-controlled T2DM, respectively. Because of an increase in public awareness about produce safety, farmer food safety education has become an important research and extension topic. This review article summarizes findings by researchers who have evaluated produce growers' food safety knowledge and attitudes and the effectiveness of food safety educational programs for growers. A search of on-line databases, journal archives, conference abstracts, and reference lists of relevant studies was conducted to locate peer-reviewed articles on produce growers' food safety knowledge and behavioral changes. Study selection criteria included publications in English, publication between 2000 and 2019, and a focus on one of six topics handling of agricultural water, soil amendments, domesticated animal and wildlife management, worker health and hygiene, food safety plans and record-keeping, and cleaning and sanitation. Forty-three published articles were included in the analysis. Handling of agricultural water and soil amendments were the two topics least understood by growers, whereas worker health and hygiene were the best understood. Sensitivity and specificity were estimated with bivariate random-effects meta-analyses.

    We retrospectively analyzed the data of dynamic renal scintigraphy (DRS) in experimental rabbits. We calculated renal uptake during minutes 1-2 and 2-3 by correcting bladder radioactivity and computed the split GFR by renal uptake. Then, the EBI and GFR between 1-2 min and 2-3 min were compared, respectively.

    The EBI proportion (57.3%) at 2-3 min of DRS was higher than that (8.5%) at 1-2 min (
    < 0.05). The correlations between the 1-2 min and 2-3 min uptake rates of unobstructed kidneys after correction (

The present review aims to examine potential crosstalk between Ca2+ signaling and PHB function in pancreatic β-cells. Moreover, this review will focus on the effects of cytokines and glucolipotoxicity on Ca2+ signaling and its possible interaction with PHB. Improved understanding of this important mitochondrial protein may aid in the design of more targeted drugs to identify specific pathways involved with stress-induced dysfunction in the β-cell. The chemical compositions of EFH were identified using LC-ESI-MS. The mice with 3% DSS-induced UC were administered EFH (200, 400, and 800 mg/kg), sulfasalazine (SASP, 200 mg/kg), and azathioprine (AZA, 13 mg/kg) for 10 days via daily gavage. The colonic inflammation was evaluated by the disease activity index (DAI), colonic length, histological scores, and levels of inflammatory mediators. The gut microbiota was characterized by 16S rRNA gene sequencing and analysis. LC-ESI-MS analysis showed that EFH was rich in alkaloids and flavones. The results indicated that EFH significantly improved the DAI score, relieved colon shortening, and repaired pathological colonic variations in colitis. In addition, proteins in the NF- B pathway were significantly inhibited by EFH. Furthermore, EFH recovered the diversity and balance of the gut microbiota. EFH has protective effects against DSS-induced colitis by keeping the balance of the gut microbiota and suppressing the NF- B pathway. To investigate the influence of early bladder imaging (EBI) in experimental rabbits on the quantitative calculation of glomerular filtration rate (GFR) by the Gates method. We retrospectively analyzed the data of dynamic renal scintigraphy (DRS) in experimental rabbits. We calculated renal uptake during minutes 1-2 and 2-3 by correcting bladder radioactivity and computed the split GFR by renal uptake. Then, the EBI and GFR between 1-2 min and 2-3 min were compared, respectively. The EBI proportion (57.3%) at 2-3 min of DRS was higher than that (8.5%) at 1-2 min ( < 0.05). The correlations between the 1-2 min and 2-3 min uptake rates of unobstructed kidneys after correction ( = 0.952-0.979) were higher than those before correction ( = 0.859-0.936). However, the correlation between the two in obstructed kidneys was not improved ( = 0.967 versus = 0.968). For unobstructed kidneys, the difference in GFR based on 2-3 min uptake between before and after correction was significant ( < 0.05), but not in obstructed kidneys ( > 0.05). For GFR based on 1-2 min uptake, the difference between before and after correction was not significant in obstructed or unobstructed kidneys ( > 0.05). Before correction, the GFR of unobstructed kidneys of 10.5% of the rabbits in the protein load test was lower than that in the baseline status, but not so after correction. The 2-3 min EBI on DRS has a significant influence on the GFR calculated by the Gates method in experimental rabbits. Controlling water intake or calculating the GFR by 1-2 min renal uptake helps to avoid the influence of EBI on GFR. Three lncRNAs and 772 protein-coding genes were identified by microarray analysis and evidenced by in vitro and in vivo experiments as differentially expressed. Functional annotation and differentially expressed- (DE-) lncRNA-mRNA coexpression networks reveal that DE-lncRNAs are associated with mitochondrial dysfunction and oxidative stress, aging-related metabolism alterations, DNA damage, and apoptosis, as well as neurodegenerative features during sevoflurane anesthesia. These results suggest that lncRNAs play roles in general anesthesia-related brain function modulation during the perioperative context and provide insights into the lncRNA-related modulation mechanisms and targets.

Bilateral pure-tone hearing thresholds were obtained at frequencies of 250 hertz (Hz), 500 Hz, 750 Hz, 1000 Hz, 1500 Hz, 2000 Hz, 4000 Hz, 6000 Hz and 8000 Hz, and hearing thresholds were defined as the lowest level at which the tone was perceived 50% of the time. Thresholds at 500 Hz, 1000 Hz, 2000 Hz anurologically healthy controls (n = 38). The outcomes of the SiN task conducted in pwMS can be found in Iva et al., (2021). The modified ZIF-8 samples (ZIF-8@amine) were thoroughly characterized, including powder X-ray diffractometry, Fourier-transformed infrared spectroscopy, and physical adsorption at 77 K by nitrogen, thermogravimetric analysis, and photophysical characterization. Results showed that after modification, the Brunauer-Emmett-Teller surface area and total pore volume both increased, almost one time higher than those of the original ZIF-8 sample, and followed the order ZIF-8-MMEN > ZIF-8-MAEA > ZIF-8. Furthermore, the N-H group was successfully grafted into the modified ZIF-8 samples. To examine the sensing properties of the modified ZIF-8@amine samples toward the breath biomarkers of lung cancer, five potential volatile organic compound biomarkers were used as analytes. ZIF-8-MMEN and ZIF-8-MAEA revealed a unique capacity for sensing hexanal, ethylbenzene, and 1-propanol with high efficiency and sensitivity. The SSW was characterized using nitrogen adsorption-desorption isotherms, scanning electron microscopy alongside energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, a thermogravimetric-derivative thermogravimetry analyzer, and a ζ-potential analyzer. The maximum adsorption capacity of 400 mg/L SSW was 229.98 mg/g for 36 h at 55 °C. Both the Langmuir isotherm model and the pseudo-second-order kinetic model well described the experimental data. According to the values of the Gibbs free energy and enthalpy changes, the TC adsorption by SSW proved to be spontaneous and endothermic. We herein report the synthesis, and structural and physical property characterization of a uranium(IV) quinoid-based MOF, [U(Cl2dhbq)2(H2O)2]·4H2O (1, Cl2dhbq2- = deprotonated 2,5-dichloro-3,6-dihydroxybenzoquinone). 1 is a rare example of a U(IV)-based coordination solid and the first material to incorporate bona fide reducible bridging ligands. Despite the anticipated thermodynamic driving force, no indications of valence tautomerism are evident from magnetometry, near-IR spectroscopy, and X-band electron paramagnetic resonance measurements. The concentrations, structural arrangement, and directionality of collagen depend on the type of tissue. Thick fibril bundles of collagen are observed in most collagenous tissues, including connective tissues, bones, and tendons, indicating that they play a critical role in many cell functions. In this study, we developed a new method to regulate collagen bundling without altering the protein concentration, temperature, or pH by using sodium sulfate to replicate bundled collagen fibrils found in vivo. Microstructure analysis revealed that both the thickness of the fibril bundles and the pore size of the matrix increased with the amount of sodium sulfate. In contrast, there was no significant change in the bulk mechanical stiffness of the collagen matrix. The modified collagen bundle matrix was used to investigate the responses of human cervical cancer cells by mimicking the extracellular environments of a tumor. Compared to the normal collagen matrix, cells on the collagen bundle matrix exhibited significant changes in morphology, with a reduced cell perimeter and aspect ratio.

The concentrations, structural arrangement, and directionality of collagen depend on the type of tissue. Thick fibril bundles of collagen are observed in most collagenous tissues, including connective tissues, bones, and tendons, indicating that they play a critical role in many cell functions. In this study, we developed a new method to regulate collagen bundling without altering the protein concentration, temperature, or pH by using sodium sulfate to replicate bundled collagen fibrils found in vivo. Microstructure analysis revealed that both the thickness of the fibril bundles and the pore size of the matrix increased with the amount of sodium sulfate. In contrast, there was no significant change in the bulk mechanical stiffness of the collagen matrix. The modified collagen bundle matrix was used to investigate the responses of human cervical cancer cells by mimicking the extracellular environments of a tumor. Compared to the normal collagen matrix, cells on the collagen bundle matrix exhibited significant changes in morphology, with a reduced cell perimeter and aspect ratio.
