The preparation of powdered microcapsules of flavor substances should not only protect these substances from volatilization during storage but also improve their diffusion during use. This study aimed to investigate the effects of maltodextrin (MD) with different dextrose equivalent (DE) values on retention of flavor substances during storage, and the dynamic release of flavor substances during dissolution. MDs with three different DE values and whey protein isolate were mixed in a ratio of 41 as wall materials to encapsulate ethyl acetate, and powdered microcapsules were prepared by spray drying. It was proved that MD could reduce the diffusion of flavor substances under different relative humidity conditions through the interaction between core material and wall material. During dissolution, MD released flavor substances quickly owing to its superior solubility. The reconstituted emulsion formed after the powder dissolved in water recaptured flavor substances and made the system reach equilibrium. This study explored the mechanism of flavor release during the storage and dissolution of powder microcapsules and should help us understand the application of powder microcapsules in food systems.The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) Virology Quality Assurance (VQA) established a robust proficiency testing program for Sanger sequencing (SS)-based HIV-1 drug resistance (HIVDR) testing in 2001. While many of the lessons learned during the development of such programs may also apply to next generation sequencing (NGS)-based HIVDR assays, challenges remain for the ongoing evaluation of NGS-based testing. These challenges include a proper assessment of assay accuracy and the reproducibility of low abundance variant detection, intra- and inter-assay performance comparisons among laboratories using lab-defined tests, and different data analysis pipelines designed for NGS. In collaboration with the World Health Organization (WHO) Global HIVDR Laboratory Network and the Public Health Agency of Canada, the Rush VQA program distributed archived proficiency testing panels to ten laboratories to evaluate internally developed NGS assays. Consensus FASTA files were submitted using 5%, 10%, and 20% variant detection thresholds, and scored based on the same criteria used for SS. This small study showed that the SS External Quality Assurance (EQA) approach can be used as a transitional strategy for using NGS to generate SS-like data and for ongoing performance while using NGS data from the same quality control materials to further evaluate NGS assay performance.The search for an effective drug to treat oncological diseases, which have become the main scourge of mankind, has generated a lot of methods for studying this affliction. It has also become a serious challenge for scientists and clinicians who have needed to invent new ways of overcoming the problems encountered during treatments, and have also made important discoveries pertaining to fundamental issues relating to the emergence and development of malignant neoplasms. Understanding the basics of the human immune system interactions with tumor cells has enabled new cancer immunotherapy strategies. The initial successes observed in immunotherapy led to new methods of treating cancer and attracted the attention of the scientific and clinical communities due to the prospects of these methods. Nevertheless, there are still many problems that prevent immunotherapy from calling itself an effective drug in the fight against malignant neoplasms. This review examines the current state of affairs for each immunotherapy method, the effectiveness of the strategies under study, as well as possible ways to overcome the problems that have arisen and increase their therapeutic potentials.Poor sleep quality and frailty are common problems among aged people. However, the association between sleep quality and frailty in middle-aged and older people is seldom discussed in Asia, especially in Taiwan. This study investigated this association hopefully to provide pertinent knowledge for the prevention of frailty. We conducted a cross-sectional study and enrolled 828 subjects, 237 male and 591 female, aged 50-85 years old, from a community in Northern Taiwan. Poor sleep quality was defined as the Chinese version of the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (CPSQI) > 5. Prefrailty and frailty were defined as fulfillment of one or two and three, respectively, of five phenotypic criteria exhaustion, weakness, slowness, weight loss, and low physical activity. Our univariate analysis showed that the incidence of prefrailty/frailty in the group of poor sleep quality was higher than that in the group of CPSQI ≤ 5 (p less then 0.001). Further multiple logistic regression analysis revealed that poor sleep quality was an independent factor for prefrailty and frailty status (odds ratio = 1.95, 95% confidence interval = 1.38-2.77), after adjustment for confounding factors. We concluded that poor sleep quality is independently associated with prefrailty and frailty status in our study population.The hyperloop transportation system has emerged as an innovative next-generation transportation system. In this system, a capsule-type vehicle inside a sealed near-vacuum tube moves at 1000 km/h or more. Not only must this transport tube span over long distances, but it must be clear of potential hazards to vehicles traveling at high speeds inside the tube. Therefore, an automated infrastructure anomaly detection system is essential. This study sought to confirm the applicability of advanced sensing technology such as Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) in the automatic anomaly detection of next-generation transportation infrastructure such as hyperloops. To this end, a prototype two-dimensional LiDAR sensor was constructed and used to generate three-dimensional (3D) point cloud models of a tube facility. In the comparison of PE vs. JI, 10 phosphoproteins were detected with their phosphorylation level significantly changed, and four of them were demonstrated to be significantly down-regulated at the transcriptional level. Bioinformatic analysis of these identified phosphoproteins suggested that phosphorylation-mediated modulation of protein function was employed to regulate the pathway of toxoplasmosis and metabolism and cellular processes correlated with tachyzoite's binding, location, and metabolism, and thus play vital roles in the parasite lytic cycle. Moreover, cytoskeletal network (CN)-associated Inner Membrane Complex (IMC1, IMC4, IMC6 and IMC12), Intravascular Network (IVN)-related GRAs (GRA2, GRA3, GRA7 and GRA12), and Parasitophorous Vacuole Membrane (PVM)-localized ROP5 were shown to be enriched at the central nodes in the protein interaction network generated by bioinformatic analysis, in which the phosphorylation level of IMC4, GRA2, GRA3, and GRA12 were found to be significantly regulated. Here, we conducted a comprehensive metagenome-wide association study (MWAS) of the relapsing-remitting MS gut microbiome (ncase = 26, ncontrol = 77) in the Japanese population, by using whole-genome shotgun sequencing. Our MWAS consisted of three major bioinformatic analytic pipelines (phylogenetic analysis, functional gene analysis, and pathway analysis). Phylogenetic case-control association tests showed discrepancies of eight clades, most of which were related to the immune system (false discovery rate [FDR] less then 0.10; e.g., Erysipelatoclostridium_sp. and Gemella morbillorum). Gene association tests found an increased abundance of one putative dehydrogenase gene (Clo1100_2356) and one ABC transporter related gene (Mahau_1952) in the MS metagenome compared with controls (FDR less then 0.1). Molecular pathway analysis of the microbiome gene case-control comparisons identified enrichment of multiple Gene Ontology terms, with the most significant enrichment on cell outer membrane (P = 1.5 × 10-7). Interaction between the metagenome and host genome was identified by comparing biological pathway enrichment between the MS MWAS and the MS genome-wide association study (GWAS) results (i.e., MWAS-GWAS interaction). No apparent discrepancies in alpha or beta diversities of metagenome were found between MS cases and controls. Patients suffering from metabolic and gastrointestinal (GI) disorders are thought to be at a moderate-to-high risk of infection with SARS-CoV-2, indicating the direct implication of gut dysbiosis in COVID-19 severity. The intrarater ICC was "almost perfect" (ICC 0.83-0.97) for all six measurements. The interrater ICC was "substantial" to "almost perfect" (ICC 0.69-0.93). The mean difference in intrarater angular measurements was ≤ 0.6° and ≤ 0.8mm for linear measurements, and ≤ 2.2° and ≤ 2.1mm for interrater measurements. Maximum CV for the interrater linear measurements (≤ 17.7%) more than doubled that of the angular measurements (≤ 8.0%). The maximum width of the 95% limits of agreement was 6.5° and 8.4mm for intrarater measures, and 8.9° and 10.6mm for interrater measurements.

This is a retrospective case-control study with 93 patients, 41 patients with ACL total rupture (ACL-TR), and 52 patients without ACL injury who underwent knee magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) between January 2013 and January 2016. The femoral trochlear morphology was evaluated at the proximal and distal levels from the axial knee MRI. The morphological features of the trochlea using sulcus angle, sulcus depth, condylar heights, trochlear sulcus height, percentage of condyles and trochlear sulcus height to transepicondylar width, and lateral and medial trochlear inclination were evaluated. The notch width index was measured on the coronal MR images for notch stenos.

Finally, the importance of joint reflection on role design, which contributes to the success or failure of participatory research cooperation and the quality of its results, is highlighted.

The intrarater ICC was "almost perfect" (ICC 0.83-0.97) for all six measurements. The interrater ICC was "substantial" to "almost perfect" (ICC 0.69-0.93). To evaluate third- and sixth-year medical students in Brazil in terms of their knowledge of and attitudes toward the WHO MPOWER policies to reduce tobacco use.
The WHO Global Health Professions Student Survey was applied in five cohorts of medical students evaluated in their third and sixth years of medical school, between 2008 and 2015. Comparisons were drawn between the two years of medical school in terms of the proportions of students who experimented with or used tobacco products in the last 30 days prior to the survey; knowledge of and compliance with smoke-free policies on the university campus; formal training on smoking cessation strategies; and self-recognition as role models for patients/society.
Of the 943 students who completed the survey, approximately 6% had smoked cigarettes in the last 30 days prior to the survey. Comparing the third and sixth years of medical school, we observed a significant increase in the proportion of students who were knowledgeable about smoking cessation strategies (22.74% vs. 95.84%; p < 0.001) and in that of those who recognized their role as models for patients/society (84.5% vs. 89.7%; p = 0.023). Student knowledge of the smoking policies on the university campus was associated with an increase in self-recognition as role models (adjusted absolute difference = 6.7%; adjusted p = 0.050).

We searched the literature on the use of cholecalciferol for prevention or treatment of COVID-19, using the MEDLINE and LILACS databases, with the keywords "vitamin D", "cholecalciferol", "SARS-CoV-2", "COVID-19" and "coronavirus", from January 1, 2020, to June 10, 2020. Narrative reviews, cohort studies and ecological studies were selected.
We retrieved 32 references, of which 8 were considered eligible for intensive review and critical analysis. These comprised five narrative reviews, two observational studies and one protocol proposal. Most of the studies selected reported positive effects from use of vitamin D for prevention or treatment of COVID-19. However, there was little quantitative data to assess the real impact of using this vitamin as an intervention against this disease.
Current studies on vitamin D used for purposes other than bone health promotion cannot be taken as support to justify its use in a disease as recent as COVID-19. Studies of greater robustness, with higher levels of clinical evidence, need to be conducted. Rational use of this vitamin needs to be ensured, thereby minimizing the impacts on the patient and the public healthcare system.

To evaluate third- and sixth-year medical students in Brazil in terms of their knowledge of and attitudes toward the WHO MPOWER policies to reduce tobacco use. The WHO Global Health Professions Student Survey was applied in five cohorts of medical students evaluated in their third and sixth years of medical school, between 2008 and 2015. Comparisons were drawn between the two years of medical school in terms of the proportions of students who experimented with or used tobacco products in the last 30 days prior to the survey; knowledge of and compliance with smoke-free policies on the university campus; formal training on smoking cessation strategies; and self-recognition as role models for patients/society. Of the 943 students who completed the survey, approximately 6% had smoked cigarettes in the last 30 days prior to the survey. Comparing the third and sixth years of medical school, we observed a significant increase in the proportion of students who were knowledgeable about smoking cessation strategies (22.74% vs. 95.84%; p < 0.001) and in that of those who recognized their role as models for patients/society (84.5% vs. 89.7%; p = 0.023). Student knowledge of the smoking policies on the university campus was associated with an increase in self-recognition as role models (adjusted absolute difference = 6.7%; adjusted p = 0.050). Knowledge of smoking cessation strategies and self-recognition as role models for patients/society increase over the course of medical school and are associated with the implementation of smoke-free policies. So far, the absence of a vaccine against the new coronavirus has led people worldwide to seek various therapeutic alternatives, including use of cholecalciferol. Narrative review developed by a research group at a public university in Recife (PE), Brazil. We searched the literature on the use of cholecalciferol for prevention or treatment of COVID-19, using the MEDLINE and LILACS databases, with the keywords "vitamin D", "cholecalciferol", "SARS-CoV-2", "COVID-19" and "coronavirus", from January 1, 2020, to June 10, 2020. Narrative reviews, cohort studies and ecological studies were selected. We retrieved 32 references, of which 8 were considered eligible for intensive review and critical analysis. These comprised five narrative reviews, two observational studies and one protocol proposal. Most of the studies selected reported positive effects from use of vitamin D for prevention or treatment of COVID-19. However, there was little quantitative data to assess the real impact of using this vitamin as an intervention against this disease. Current studies on vitamin D used for purposes other than bone health promotion cannot be taken as support to justify its use in a disease as recent as COVID-19. Studies of greater robustness, with higher levels of clinical evidence, need to be conducted. We examined whether differential genome size evolution correlated with ploidy levels and phylogenetic relationships. We also examined the tempo of repeat sequence dynamics associated with allopatric speciation over the last 3-6 million years between hexaploid species that diverged on the American and European Atlantic coasts and tetraploid species from North and South America. The tetraploid S. spartinae, whose phylogenetic placement has been debated, exhibits a similar repeat content as hexaploid species, suggesting common ancestry. Genome expansion or contraction resulting from repeat dynamics seems to be explained mostly by the contrasting divergence times between species, rather than by genome changes triggered by ploidy level change per se. One 370 bp satellite may be exhibiting 'meiotic drive' and driving chromosome evolution in S. alterniflora. Leaf Mg concentrations, CO2 assimilation, photosystem II efficiency, electron transport rate, photochemical and non-photochemical quenching, expression of reactive oxygen species (ROS) scavengers, and the pigment composition were analyzed. Our data indicate that CO2 assimilation is more sensitive to the reduction of tissue Mg concentrations than photosynthetic light reactions. Necroptosis is a programmed form of necrosis, and it is closely related to lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced injury. Our aim was to investigate whether Se deficiency can promote tracheal injury caused by LPS through miRNA-induced necroptosis. By establishing models of tracheal injury in Se-deficient chickens, we verified the targeting relationship between chicken-derived miR-16-5p and PI3K through bioinformatics, qRT-PCR and WB analyses, and we measured the changes in the expression of genes related to the PI3K/AKT pathway, RIP3/MLKL pathway and MAPK pathway and of heat shock proteins. Under the condition of Se deficiency, the following results were observed PI3K/AKT expression decreased with the upregulation of miR-16-5p, the expression of necroptosis-related factors (TNF-α, RIP1, FADD, RIP3 and MLKL) increased, and the expression of Caspase 8 significantly decreased (p less then 0.05). Light microscopy observations indicated that cell necrosis was the main pathological change due to Se deficiency injury in the tracheal epithelium. The MAPK pathway was activated, and HSP expression was upregulated, indicating that the MAPK pathway and HSPs are both involved in Se deficiency-mediated necroptosis. In addition, Se deficiency promoted the expression of necroptosis-related genes in LPS-treated chickens (p less then 0.05), and the pathological changes of cell necrosis were more obvious. By establishing models of tracheal injury in Se-deficient chickens, we verified the targeting relationship between chicken-derived miR-16-5p and PI3K through bioinformatics, qRT-PCR and WB analyses, and we measured the changes in the expression of genes related to the PI3K/AKT pathway, RIP3/MLKL pathway and MAPK pathway and of heat shock proteins. Under the condition of Se deficiency, the following results were observed PI3K/AKT expression decreased with the upregulation of miR-16-5p, the expression of necroptosis-related factors (TNF-α, RIP1, FADD, RIP3 and MLKL) increased, and the expression of Caspase 8 significantly decreased (p less then 0.05). Light microscopy observations indicated that cell necrosis was the main pathological change due to Se deficiency injury in the tracheal epithelium. The MAPK pathway was activated, and HSP expression was upregulated, indicating that the MAPK pathway and HSPs are both involved in Se deficiency-mediated necroptosis. In addition, Se deficiency promoted the expression of necroptosis-related genes in LPS-treated chickens (p less then 0.05), and the pathological changes of cell necrosis were more obvious. Recent research showed the remarkable importance and range of microbial partners for enhancing the growth and health of plants. However, plant-microbe holobionts are influenced by many different factors, generating complex interactive systems. In this review, we summarize insights from this emerging field, highlighting the factors that contribute to the recruitment, selection, enrichment and dynamic interactions of plant-associated microbiota. We then propose a roadmap for synthetic community application with the aim to establish sustainable agricultural systems that use microbial communities to enhance the productivity and health of plants independently of chemical fertilizers and pesticides. Considering global warming and climate change, we also suggest that desert plants can serve as a suitable pool of potentially beneficial microbes to maintain plant growth under abiotic stress conditions.

Diagnostic characters for genera and species are discussed.Marine tardigrades were sampled at three sites on Mexico's Caribbean coast. Eleven taxa were collected, one of which is described as a new species. Styraconyx robertoi sp. nov. is characterized by asymmetric primary clavae; dorsal cuticle with a grid-like sculpture; claws with reduced accessory hooks; females with peduncles on only two digits (the external) of legs I-IV; males with peduncles only on the external digits of legs I-III and peduncles on all four digits of leg IV.
