This pandemic has revealed the underbelly of South African society in general and its education system more specifically-it has laid bare the gross inequalities that are the legacies of apartheid and the consequences of neoliberal capitalism. Drawing on ideas articulated in the four introductory chapters of the International Handbook of Curriculum Research, edited by William Pinar in 2014, this article discusses Covid-19 and the prospects of education in South Africa. The article shows how understanding the wisdom of indigenous traditions along with the moral dimensions of education, race, and the new technologies of surveillance, neoliberalism, and education can provide a nuanced awareness of the nature of the Covid-19 pandemic. It then explores the implications of such insights for the field of curriculum studies and, where relevant, for the school curriculum. It concludes by showing how these broad themes intersect and gel around the notion of Ubuntu-currere.Various AI functionalities such as pattern recognition and prediction can effectively be used to diagnose (recognize) and predict coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) infections and propose timely response (remedial action) to minimize the spread and impact of the virus. Motivated by this, an AI system based on deep meta learning has been proposed in this research to accelerate analysis of chest X-ray (CXR) images in automatic detection of COVID-19 cases. We present a synergistic approach to integrate contrastive learning with a fine-tuned pre-trained ConvNet encoder to capture unbiased feature representations and leverage a Siamese network for final classification of COVID-19 cases. We validate the effectiveness of our proposed model using two publicly available datasets comprising images from normal, COVID-19 and other pneumonia infected categories. Our model achieves 95.6% accuracy and AUC of 0.97 in diagnosing COVID-19 from CXR images even with a limited number of training samples.
    The indications for experienced aggression and violence towards doctors in children's hospitals are increasing and are the focus of this study. They are reported in contact with parents or relatives in emotionally highly charged situations caused by their child's illness. This empirical study investigated the extent to which experienced aggressive and violent behavior has been received by pediatricians in their everyday work in hospitals.

    Data from two previously unpublished nationwide surveys in 2009 (

Using the same questionnaire, the forms of aggressive action, such as exerting pressure, insulting, threatening physical violence, attempting to use violence and actually using violence as well as the descriptions of the associated situations were questioned. The wording of the insults and the type of threat could be specified via open questions.

    Approximately four out of five respondents said they have been the target of an aggressive action by parents or relatives. In 2017 approximately 3 out of 4 respondents (71.0%) considered the problem of aggressive behavior to be relevant to their everyday work compared to only every second respondent (51.9%) in 2009. Individual respondents reported up to 60 situations, in both survey waves at a median of 4.0times per year.

MoSDeF facilitates the publication and dissemination of TRUE simulations by automating many of the critical steps in molecular simulation, thus enhancing their reproducibility.

However, the transcriptional regulation of melatonin biosynthetic enzymes and their integrative crosstalk with other signaling pathways remain elusive. Here, we summarize recent progress in the functional analysis of melatonin biosynthetic enzymes and the major sites of melatonin synthesis in plants.     With growing demand for a dementia-capable workforce, attention shifts from disseminating knowledge of care strategies to facilitating teams translating knowledge in practice. Occupational Adaptation (OA) is a theoretical framework used to facilitate people resolving real-world challenges through active problem solving, using relative mastery as its measure. This pilot study evaluated if and how OA-based training improves dementia care teams' relative mastery and team development more than a skills-based (SB) program.

    We report results of an embedded mixed-methods study with 28 employees of a continuing care retirement community (two groups randomly assigned to nine-week programs). Data collection entailed two surveys conducted pre, mid, and post-intervention; observations; journals; and follow-up interviews. We extended beyond quantitative and qualitative analyses with cross-cutting analyses exploring exemplar and exceptional cases.

In a mouse MPN model, combining ATO with IFNα enhanced and accelerated responses, eradicating MPN in most **** by targeting disease-initiating cells.     Little is known about the prevalence of frailty in indigenous populations. We developed a frailty index for older New Zealand Māori and Pasifika who require publicly funded support services.

    A frailty index (FI) was developed for New Zealand adults aged ≥65 years who had an interRAI-Home Care assessment between 1 June 2012 and 30 October 2015. A frailty score for each participant was calculated by summing the number of deficits recorded and dividing by the total number of possible deficits. This created a FI with a potential range from 0 to 1. Linear regression models for FIs with ethnicity were adjusted for age and sex. Cox proportional hazards models were used to assess the association between the FI and mortality for Māori, Pasifika, and non-Māori/non-Pasifika.

    Of 54,345 participants, 3,096 (5.7%) identified as Māori, 1,846 (3.4%) were Pasifika, and 49,415 (86.7%) identified as neither Māori nor Pasifika. New Zealand Europeans (48,178, 97.5%) constituted most of the latter group. Within each sex, the mean FIs for Māori and Pasifika were greater than the mean FIs for non-Māori and non-Pasifika, with the difference being more pronounced in females.   • Two-photon imaging is a major recording technique used in neuroscience. However, it suffers from several limitations, including a low sampling rate, the nonlinearity of calcium responses, the slow dynamics of calcium dyes and a low SNR, all of which severely limit the potential of two-photon imaging to elucidate neuronal dynamics with high temporal resolution. We developed a hyperacuity algorithm (HA_time) based on an approach that combines a generative model and machine learning to improve spike detection and the precision of spike time inference. Bayesian inference was performed to estimate the calcium spike model, assuming constant spike shape and size. A support vector machine using this information and a jittering method maximizing the likelihood of estimated spike times enhanced spike time estimation precision approximately fourfold (range, 2-7; mean, 3.5-4.0; 2SEM, 0.1-0.25) compared to the sampling interval. Benchmark scores of HA_time for biological data from three different brain regions were among the best of the benchmark algorithms. Simulation of broader data conditions indicated that our algorithm performed better than others with high firing rate conditions. Furthermore, HA_time exhibited comparable performance for conditions with and without ground truths. We sought to do this here by building upon a recent whole-brain model of serotonergic neuromodulation, to study the entropic effects of 5HT2A-R activation. Our results reproduce the overall entropy increase observed in previous experiments in vivo, providing the first model-based explanation for this phenomenon. We also found that entropy changes were not uniform across the brain entropy increased in some regions and decreased in others, suggesting a topographical reconfiguration mediated by 5HT2A-R activation. Interestingly, at the whole-brain level, this reconfiguration was not well explained by 5HT2A-R density, but related closely to the topological properties of the brain's anatomical connectivity. These results help us understand the mechanisms underlying the psychedelic state and, more generally, the pharmacological modulation of whole-brain activity.Members of the interleukin-6 (IL-6) family of cytokines are important for reproductive function that are mediated through changes in gene and miRNA expression. Herein, we characterized the expression of miR-21, miR-155, miR-34c and miR-146a in bovine oocytes and cumulus cells during in vitro maturation (IVM) with leukemia inhibitory factor (LIF), IL-6 and IL-11 or unsupplemented controls. LIF-exposed COCs showed higher expression of miR-21 and miR-155 in oocytes, whereas miR-146a expression was increased in oocytes matured with IL-6 and IL-11. In cumulus cells, miR-155 expression was elevated by all treatments while only LIF increased miR-21 expression. Based on these results, we next examined how LIF exposure during IVM affected oocyte competence, through IVF and the expression of specific genes in GV- and MII-oocytes, in 2- and 8-cell embryos, and in Day 8-blastocysts. LIF supplementation did not affect cleavage rate, blastocyst yield or several other developmental parameters, but did increase hatching rate. LIF suppressed DPPA3, ZAR1 and NPM2 expression in 2 cell- and/or 8-cell embryos. LIF increased the expression of KAT2A and HSPA1A in MII-oocytes, and that of HDAC1, KAT2A and HSP90AA1 and the BAXBCL2L1 ratio in 2-cell embryos. Fifteen ECD-KA were submitted to 152 ± 92 min of end-ischemic HOPE and were compared to a matched group undergoing conventional-cold-storage (CCS) KT (n = 30). Primary (delayed graft function-DGF) and secondary (e.g. postoperative complications, perfusion parameters) endpoints were analyzed within 6-months follow-up. There was no difference in the development of DGF between the HOPE and CCS groups (53% vs. 33%, respectively; p = 0.197). Serum urea was lower following HOPE compared to CCS (p = 0.003), whereas the CCS group displayed lower serum creatinine and higher eGFR rates on postoperative days (POD) 7 and 14. The relative decrease of renal vascular resistance (RR) following HOPE showed a significant inverse association with serum creatinine on POD1 (r = - 0.682; p = 0.006) as well as with serum urea and eGFR.

We investigated the following (1) Mitochondrial respiration; (2) Superoxide and mitochondrial membrane potential with microscopy; (3) Citrate synthase protein expression. All experiments were performed with a cell concentration of 2-3 × 106 cells/ml for both PBMC and HASMC. There were four conditions (1) Control (no exposure); (2) Cyanide (exposure only); (3) B12a (cyanide exposure followed by B12a treatment); (4) NV118 (cyanide followed by NV118 treatment). In this study the key findings include (1) Improvement in key mitochondrial respiratory states with the succinate prodrug (NV118) but not B12a; (2) Attenuation of superoxide production with treatment of NV118 but not with B12a treatment; (3) The changes in respiration were not secondary to increased mitochondrial content as measured by citrate synthase; (4) The use of easily accessible human blood cells showed similar mitochondrial response to both cyanide and treatment to HASMC. We also present the results of various studies on patients with similar presentation particularly those caused by HSV and CMV co-infection.Pulmonary pleomorphic carcinoma (PPC) is a poorly differentiated non-small cell lung carcinoma, including squamous cell carcinoma, adenocarcinoma, or undifferentiated non-small cell lung carcinoma with at least 10% spindle and/or giant cells. Here, we report a case of PPC showing undifferentiated non-small cell lung carcinoma with giant cells. A 71-year-old man with dyspnea underwent right lobectomy because of a mass in the right upper lobe of the lung. A 5.0 × 3.0 × 1.5 cm-sized tumor was identified; microscopically, the tumor composed of undifferentiated large sized tumor cells admixed with syncytial tumor giant cells and emperipoletic giant cells. Immunohistochemically, the tumor cells were reactive for pan-cytokeratin, but negative for P40, thyroid transcription factor 1 (TTF-1), and vimentin. The tumor cells were also positive for 3 clones of programmed death-ligand 1 (PD-L1). The clinical and histologic findings supported the diagnosis of an undifferentiated non-small cell lung carcinoma with giant cells, which is a subtype of pulmonary pleomorphic carcinoma. Unfortunately, after surgery, multifocal lymph node metastasis was identified in radiologic examination. Only palliative chemotherapy was administered to the patient, although he was indicated for immunochemotherapy. Pulmonary pleomorphic carcinoma is known to have a poor prognosis, even in early stages of the disease, therefore, we should be careful in the diagnosis to ensure optimal treatment.
    Only few studies have been done to evaluate level of serum immunoglobulins (IgG,IgM,IgA) in patients with Potentially Malignant Disorders (PMD) like Leukoplakia, Oral Submucous Fibrosis (OSMF) and Oral Lichen Planus (OLP) as tumour markers.

    To estimate the serum immunoglobulins level (IgG, IgM, IgA) in leukoplakia, OSMF and oral lichen planus (OLP) patients and its comparison with levels among control groups and Weather these values can be used to predict severity of disease or not.

    30 patients with different potentially malignant disorders like leukoplakia, OSMF and oral lichen planus and 30 healthy controls were selected at random and subjected for analysis of serum IgG, IgA, IgM. Statistical methods employed were mean, standard deviation and ANOVA test.

    We observed significant elevated levels of all the immunoglobulins in leukoplakia, OSMF and oral lichen planus when compared with the control group and levels were increasing with clinical stages of OSMF


    All these immunoglobulins are indicative of tumour burden or transformation of malignancy in higher stage and might be employed as prognostic indicators in these disorders.

Here, we report a case of PPC showing undifferentiated non-small cell lung carcinoma with giant cells. A 71-year-old man with dyspnea underwent right lobectomy because of a mass in the right upper lobe of the lung. A 5.0 × 3.0 × 1.5 cm-sized tumor was identified; microscopically, the tumor composed of undifferentiated large sized tumor cells admixed with syncytial tumor giant cells and emperipoletic giant cells. Immunohistochemically, the tumor cells were reactive for pan-cytokeratin, but negative for P40, thyroid transcription factor 1 (TTF-1), and vimentin. The tumor cells were also positive for 3 clones of programmed death-ligand 1 (PD-L1). The clinical and histologic findings supported the diagnosis of an undifferentiated non-small cell lung carcinoma with giant cells, which is a subtype of pulmonary pleomorphic carcinoma. Statistical methods employed were mean, standard deviation and ANOVA test. We observed significant elevated levels of all the immunoglobulins in leukoplakia, OSMF and oral lichen planus when compared with the control group and levels were increasing with clinical stages of OSMF All these immunoglobulins are indicative of tumour burden or transformation of malignancy in higher stage and might be employed as prognostic indicators in these disorders.

    In recent years, the microbiome field has undergone a shift from clustering-based methods of operational taxonomic unit (OTU) designation based on sequence similarity to denoising algorithms that identify exact amplicon sequence variants (ASVs), and methods to identify contaminating bacterial DNA sequences from low biomass samples have been developed. In practice, human factor engineers study participants under actual conditions of use and list the problems encountered. This results in a binary discovery matrix in which each row corresponds to a participant, and each column corresponds to a usability problem. One of the main challenges in usability testing is estimating the total number of problems, in order to assess the completeness of the discovery process. Today's margin-based methods fit the column sums to a binomial model of problem detection. However, the discovery matrix actually observed is truncated because of undiscovered problems, which corresponds to fitting the marginal sums without the zeros. Margin-based methods fail to overcome the bias related to truncation of the matrix. The objective of the present study was to develop and test a matrix-based m usability testing.

    External genital lesions (EGL) are the most common sexually transmitted infections (STIs). We aimed to evaluate the prevalence, determinants and sex differences in EGL among young adults from Brazil.

    Overall, 7694 participants (aged 16 to 25 years) underwent an interview, genital examination and sampling for HPV genotyping.

    The prevalence of EGL was 4.08% (234) and is more frequent in men (5.72%) than women (2.31%) (p < 0.001). Genital lesions were significantly associated with male sex, infection by high-risk and multiple HPV types, having more than two sexual partners in the last year, smoking status and the presence of other STI. While alcohol use was associated with a higher prevalence of EGL in women, same-sex sexual relationship increase the prevalence in men.   • Phlebotomy losses greatly contribute to anaemia following preterm birth. Therefore, the possibility of drawing initial tests from the placenta seems attractive. There is a lack of literature regarding the feasibility and accuracy of pathology tests taken from umbilical arterial and venous (UAB/UVB) compared to blood collected from the newborn.

    UAB and UVB complete blood pictures were compared with the initial neonatal blood test. The relationship between UAB, UVB and neonatal complete blood picture values was determined by Spearman's Rho correlation with absolute values compared by Kruskal-Wallis. P < 0.05 was considered significant.

    Neonatal haemoglobin, white cell count, immature/total ratio and platelets were significantly correlated to the corresponding values in the UAB and UVB (all P < 0.001). While UAB and UVB haemoglobin and white cell count were similar, both were significantly lower than the neonatal values (P < 0.001 and P = 0.014, respectively). No difference was seen for immature/total ratio and platelet concentrations. UVB blood culture (**) was feasible (90%), even with delayed cord clamping, and the UVB ** volume was significantly higher (P < 0.001), with a low rate of ** contamination (1.5%).

Its presence in human tissues, including milk, and its oestrogen-disrupting properties raise concerns for an involvement in breast cancer. Because metastatic tumour spread is the main cause of breast cancer mortality, we have investigated the effects of triclosan on cell migration and invasion using three human breast epithelial cell lines and using concentrations comparable with those in human tissues. Long-term exposure to 10-7 M of triclosan resulted in increased migration and invasion as measured by xCELLigence technology for all three cell lines, for the immortalized but nontransformed MCF-10F breast epithelial cells (after 28 weeks), the oestrogen-responsive MCF-7 breast cancer cells (after 17 weeks) and the oestrogen-unresponsive MDA-MB-231 breast cancer cells (after 20 weeks). The effects were therefore not limited to cancerous cells or to oestrogen-responsive cells. This was paralleled in the MCF-10F and MCF-7 (but not MDA-MB-231) cells by a reduction in levels of E-cadherin mRNA as measured by reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) and of E-cadherin protein as measured by western immunoblotting, suggesting a mechanism involving epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition. This adds triclosan to the increasing list of ingredients of personal care products that can not only enter human breast tissue and increase cell proliferation but also influence cell motility.     Mortality of alcohol-related liver disease (ArLD) is increasing, and liver fibrosis stage is the best mortality predictor. Non-invasive tests (NITs) are increasingly used to detect fibrosis, but their value as prognostic tests in chronic liver disease, and in particular in ArLD, is less well recognized. We aimed to describe the prognostic performance of four widely used NITs (Fibrosis 4 test [FIB4], Enhanced Liver Fibrosis [ELF] test, FibroScan, and FibroTest) in ArLD.

The first and second reviewers independently screened results, extracted data, and performed risk-of-bias assessment using Quality in Prognosis Studies tool.

    Searches produced 25088 articles. After initial screening, 1020 articles were reviewed independently by both reviewers. Eleven articles remained after screening for eligibility one on ELF, four on FibroScan, four on FIB4, one on FIB4+FibroScan, and one on FibroTest+ FIB4. Area under the receiver operating characteristic curves for outcome prediction ranged from 0.65 to 0.76 for FibroScan, 0.64 to 0.83 for FIB4, 0.69 to 0.79 for FibroTest, and 0.72 to 0.85 for ELF. Studies scored low-moderate risk of bias for most domains but high risk in confounding/statistical reporting domains. The results were heterogeneous for outcomes and reporting, making pooling of data unfeasible.

    This systematic review returned 11 papers, six of which were conference abstracts and one unpublished manuscript. While the heterogeneity of studies precluded direct comparisons of NITs, each NIT performed well in individual studies in predicting prognosis in ArLD (area under the receiver operating characteristic curves >0.7 in each NIT category) and may add value to prognostication in clinical practice.

In this review, we explore the structural-activity relationship that accounts for the pharmacological profile of pyrazole derivatives and highlights future research perspectives capable of optimizing current advancement in the search for safe and efficacy anti-inflammatory drugs. Eleven articles remained after screening for eligibility one on ELF, four on FibroScan, four on FIB4, one on FIB4+FibroScan, and one on FibroTest+ FIB4. In this review, we explore the structural-activity relationship that accounts for the pharmacological profile of pyrazole derivatives and highlights future research perspectives capable of optimizing current advancement in the search for safe and efficacy anti-inflammatory drugs. The flourishing research into the pyrazole derivatives as drug candidates has advanced our understanding of inflammation-related diseases and treatment.

  • Factors Influencing Anterior/Low Anterior Resection Syndrome after Rectal or Sigmoid Resections Abstract Purpose Sphincter preserving surgery is one of the main goals in the treatment of rectal cancer because it improves the quality of life (QoL). However, some patients may experience disrupted symptoms called anterior or low anterior resection syndrome (LARS). This study designed to evaluate the frequency and influencing factors of LARS in patients who had undergone sigmoid or rectal resection.
    In this retrospective, clinical study, patients who had undergone rectal or sigmoid resection and anastomosis due to any benign and malignant reasons were evaluated in terms of LARS between January 2010 and November 2019 at Mersin University Medical Faculty Hospital. The frequency and severity of LARS determined by using routine LARS scale and influencing factor; including lesion localization, operation, the proximity of anastomosis to the anal verge, creation of stoma, chemotherapy, radiotherapy application were alsosis to the anal canal and creating the protective stoma. Receiving chemoradiotherapy also plays an important role in LARS.
    A SARS-Cov2 infection which was first arised from Wuhan in December 2019 and named as COVID-19. Still there lacks either a specific treatment or a vaccine to treat COVID-19. Convalescent plasma (CP) was previously used successfully to treat SARS-CoV-1 and MERS infections. Health authority in Turkey has published a guideline to integrate this promising option in the treatment process of patients who are prone to high risk of developing severe COVID 19.

    Forty consecutive patients who had received CP at our center were included in the study. Demographics, COVID-19 specific parameters, biomarkers to detect the severity of COVID-19 infection and outcome variables were collected retrospectively. The correlation between outcome variables and the independent predictors of the outcome were reported.

    Median age of the patients was 57.5 and 72.5% were male. At least one COVID-19 PCR test was confirmed to be positive in 75% of patients. Remaining 25% had a Chest-CT which was reported to be compatible with an ongoing COVID-19. The aim of this study was to investigate the antibacterial effects of NSAIDs on Staphylococcus aureus.

    Susceptibilities of S. aureus strains to NSAIDs with or without antimicrobials (moxifloxacin, vancomycin, ciprofloxacin, clindamycin and gentamicin) were determined by microdilution method and disk diffusion test. Expression levels of genes in the presence of drugs were investigated by real-time quantitative RT-PCR (qRT-PCR), and immunoblotting analysis was performed for staphylococcal protein A (SpA).

    Our results showed that all NSAIDs were active against S. aureus strains with ****values from 195 µg/mL to 780 µg/mL concentrations. NSAIDs increased the antibiotic susceptibility of the strains, and diclofenac was found to be more effective than the other drugs. Drugs showed different effects on expression levels of virulence factor and/or regulatory genes. Immunoblotting analysis of SpA protein was mostly in accordance with qRT-PCR results.

    The regulatory/virulence factor genes and proteins of S. aureus investigated in this study may be reasonable targets for these drugs, and we suggest that the data may contribute to the field of infection control and antimicrobial resistance.

    Endoscopes represent electro-optical devices that are used to visualize internal body cavities. The specialized endoscopic procedure of the upper gastrointestinal tract from the esophagus down to the duodenum is called an esophagogastroduodenoscopy.

    We bring our newly developed capsule endoscopy device as a promising alternative diagnostic method for visualization of the upper gastrointestinal tract.

    Capsule endoscopy has become an attractive method that uses a tiny wireless camera to take pictures of the digestive tract. Existing esophageal capsule endoscopy does not allow a retrograde view of the esophagus while retrograde scanning can provide information on the esophageal pathology.

    In comparison to the existing esophageal capsule endoscopy, our system is **** simpler and cheaper due to the need for fewer electronic devices. Moreover, its use is not limited by the capacity of the batteries used by existing capsule endoscopes. The new esophageal endoscopic system was created by combining the universal serial bus (USB) endoscope module with the thin power wires that are routed through the USB port to the computer.

    The endoscope was tested on a volunteer without any side effects such as nausea, belching, and general discomfort. The examination of the patient is performed in a sitting position and the patient discomfort during the examination is minimal so it can be performed without anesthesia.
