Primary and secondary study endpoints were SBCE retention rates in patients with confirmed patency and identification of factors associated with patency and SBCE retention, respectively. RESULTS Of 1,096 patients enrolled in the study, patency was confirmed in 976 (89.1%). PPC excretion occurred in 579 patients. Of the remaining 517 patients, patency was confirmed using imaging modalities in 401 (77.5%). SBCE retention occurred in five (0.51%) of 963 patients who underwent SBCE 1.0% in established Crohn's disease (CD) patients, 0% in suspected CD, 0% in tumors, and 1.6% in patients with obscure GI bleeding, for which PPC localization had been radiographically misinterpreted. The non-confirmation of patency was associated with established CD, stenosis identified using imaging modalities, abdominal fullness, serum albumin levels less then 4.0 g/dL, and previous small bowel obstruction (adjusted odds ratios 4.21, 2.60, 2.47, 2.12, and 2.00; 95% confidence intervals 2.62-6.78, 1.62-4.17, 1.43-4.27, 1.32-3.40, and 1.15-3.47, respectively). While patients typically present with fever and a respiratory illness, some patients also report gastrointestinal symptoms such as diarrhoea, vomiting and abdominal pain. Studies have identified the SARS-CoV-2 RNA in stool specimens of infected patients, and its viral receptor angiotensin converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) was found to be highly expressed in gastrointestinal epithelial cells. These suggest that SARS-CoV-2 can actively infect and replicate in the gastrointestinal tract. This has important implications to the disease management, transmission, and infection control. However, critics have raised a variety of concerns regarding RAIs and suggested, among other things, that their incorporation into court procedures may tend to dehumanize defendants and exacerbate, rather than alleviate, mass incarceration. In response to such concerns, this article offers recommendations for policy and practice that may help an increasingly risk-focused criminal justice system to achieve decarceration goals - and to do so without undermining its own legitimacy in the eyes of defendants or the public at large. These recommendations are aimed particularly at judges, in their roles as sentencers and makers of courtroom and courthouse policy. © 2020 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

  • This shows the need to address fear of movement in prehabilitation/rehabilitation pre- or postsurgically to improve health outcomes for patients who undergo lumbar spine surgery. BACKGROUND Cavernous-carotid fistulas (CCFs) can present with a variety of symptoms depending on the anatomy of the fistula and its venous drainage. Patients most commonly present with scleral injection, pulsatile exophthalmos, and/or chemosis. CASE DESCRIPTION We report a patient who presented with intraparenchymal hemorrhage in the absence of any of the commonly associated ocular symptoms and signs. After multiple imaging studies, the CCF was diagnosed and treated with endovascular embolization that resulted in complete occlusion of the fistula and reflux of embolysate into one of its connecting veins. CONCLUSIONS The morphology of the venous drainage can lead to atypical hemorrhagic presentation, whereas dilatation of one of the tributary veins with cortical venous reflux should warn the interventionist the path the embolysate may follow. BACKGROUND Lumbar total disc replacement is increasingly becoming a more common treatment for discogenic low **** pain refractory to conservative measures. Nevertheless, several complications have been reported, including, among others, wound infection, vascular injury, retrograde ejaculation, postsympathectomy syndrome, ileus, and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) leak. Although CSF leakage is rare, we discuss a case of CSF leakage and the diagnosis and management of CSF leakage after lumbar total disc replacement. CASE DESCRIPTION A 25-year-old man had presented with discogenic low **** pain caused by degenerative disc disease of 9 years' duration. His symptoms were exacerbated by activity, worse with sitting, and relieved by ice baths. He developed a cerebrospinal fluid leak after L5-S1 lumbar total disc replacement. CONCLUSIONS Our patient ultimately required device removal, direct repair, and replacement with a different prosthesis to treat his CSF leak. BACKGROUND Historically, practicing neurosurgeons have been key drivers of neurosurgical innovation. We sought to describe the patents held by U.S. academic neurosurgeons and to explore the relationship between patents and royalties received. METHODS The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid CMS Open Payments Data was used to identify academic neurosurgeons who had received royalties and royalty amounts during a 5-year period (2013-2017). Online patent databases were used to gather patent details. Patent citations and 5-year individual and departmental patent Hirsch (h)-indexes were calculated. Royalties were correlated with the number of patents, patent citations, and patent h-index. RESULTS We found that 119 academic neurosurgeons (7.8%) from 57 U.S. teaching programs (48.3%) had received royalty payments; 72 (60.5%) had published 648 patents. All surgeons were men, with approximately one half in the "late" stages of their career (45.3%) and subspecializing in spinal surgery (50.4%). The patented products or devices were most commonly used for spinal surgery (72.1%), with 2010-2019 the most productive period (n = 455; 70.2%). The median number of citations per patent was 32 (range, 0-620), with 33% having ≥100 citations. The highest individual and institutional patent h-index was 95; 25 (34.7%) neurosurgeons had a patent h-index of ≥5. The median total royalty payment per individual neurosurgeon was $111,011 (range, $58.05-$76,715,750.34). Royalties were correlated with the number of patents (Spearman r = 0.37; P ≤ 0.001), citations (Spearman r, 0.38; P ≤ 0.001), and inventor h-index (Spearman r = 0.38; P ≤ 0.001). BACKGROUND Diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) is the most commonly diagnosed primary non-Hodgkin lymphoma of the spine and can induce spinal compression. Reports of lymphoma arising in bone adjacent to metallic prostheses are increasing. However, to our knowledge, DLBCL arising from a scar after lumbar fusion surgery has not been reported previously. CASE DESCRIPTION A 63-year-old man complained of a 2-month history of severe pain in the **** and both legs, radiating down to the ankle, similar to sciatica with a past history of L2-S1 decompression and fusion 7 years ago. Imaging revealed an irregular mass in the epidural space and around the internal fixation surgical site, which was initially diagnosed as an epidural infectious abscess. Most of the lesion was completely excised and a detailed immunohistopathologic analysis was performed revealing the diagnosis of a DLBCL. After surgery and chemotherapy, he was discharged without complications. Unfortunately, he died 2 years later because of brain metastasis. CONCLUSIONS This case highlights the need to consider malignancy in the differential diagnosis and carefully examine surgical specimens in revision surgery. Further understanding of the role of metal implants in the development of lymphoma is required. BACKGROUND Anterior cervical diskectomy and fusion (ACDF) is the main surgical treatment of cervical radiculopathy. Controversy exists about the need to resect the posterior longitudinal ligament (PLL) to directly decompress the nerve roots, or if it is sufficient to indirectly decompress with diskectomy and graft placement. The objective of this study was to determine the effect of PLL resection after ACDF. METHODS A retrospective review was performed of all patients that underwent first-time ACDF for cervical radiculopathy at a single tertiary care institution between 1999 and 2013. Comparative analyses and multivariable logistic regression were performed. RESULTS Two hundred patients were included with a mean follow-up of 39 months. Average age was 54 years, 62% were women, and diabetes and current smoking status were noted in 11% and 15%, respectively. PLL resection was performed in 127 patients (64%), and no significant differences in baseline characteristics were observed between the 2 cohorts. One durotomy occurred in the resected PLL cohort, and none were seen in the unresected PLL group.

These peptides hold the potential to directly target proliferative pathways and stimulate cell arrest or death pathways. Elastin-like polypeptide (ELP) is an elastin derived biopolymer that undergoes a thermally mediated phase transition. This study employs p50, a nuclear localization sequence derived peptide that inhibits the activation of NFκB and is implicated in cancer cell survival and metastasis. In order to effectively delivery p50, it is conjugated to SynB1-ELP1, a thermally responsive macromolecular carrier. By applying an external heat source, mild hyperthermic conditions (41 °C) induce aggregation and therefore can be used to specifically target ELP to solid tumors in cancer therapy. The addition of a cell penetrating peptide (CPP) to the N-terminus of the macromolecular carrier enhances the cellular uptake and directs the subcellular localization of the bioactive peptide. The novel TP, p50, inhibits proliferation and induces apoptosis of breast cancer cells by blocking the intranuclear import of NFκB. The fixed combination of calcipotriol plus betamethasone dipropionate in a gel formulation (Cal/BDP gel) has been recommended as a first-line topical treatment for mild to moderate plaque. To examine whether Cal/BDP gel can effectively improve treatment adherence, we investigated the effects of once-daily Cal/BDP gel on factors affecting adherence at weeks 4, 8 and 12 in patients with plaque psoriasis who had poor adherence. A total of 46 subjects were enrolled and 41 subjects (26 men, 15 women; mean age, 50.5 years) were included in the analysis. In patients with poor adherence, many preferred treatment with Cal/BDP gel and evaluated its convenience as "excellent" at weeks 4 and 12. At week 12, the proportion of "clear"/"very mild" ratings using PGA reached 20.5%, the change from baseline on m-PASI was -61.3% and the change from baseline on BSA was -39.8%, suggesting that the skin symptoms of psoriasis had improved greatly. In most patients, the longer they used Cal/BDP gel, the greater their preference and satisfaction and the higher the therapeutic effect, which increased markedly over 12 weeks. These results suggest that Cal/BDP gel can effectively improve treatment adherence. Conversely, high adherence to Cal/BDP gel must enhance the therapeutic effect. Elastin-like polypeptide (ELP) is an elastin derived biopolymer that undergoes a thermally mediated phase transition. This study employs p50, a nuclear localization sequence derived peptide that inhibits the activation of NFκB and is implicated in cancer cell survival and metastasis. In order to effectively delivery p50, it is conjugated to SynB1-ELP1, a thermally responsive macromolecular carrier. By applying an external heat source, mild hyperthermic conditions (41 °C) induce aggregation and therefore can be used to specifically target ELP to solid tumors in cancer therapy. The addition of a cell penetrating peptide (CPP) to the N-terminus of the macromolecular carrier enhances the cellular uptake and directs the subcellular localization of the bioactive peptide. The novel TP, p50, inhibits proliferation and induces apoptosis of breast cancer cells by blocking the intranuclear import of NFκB. Carers, who provided unpaid support to sick or disabled friends, family or neighbours in a non-professional capacity, reported here as unpaid carers, were asked to complete a web-based questionnaire comprising of the Perceived Stress-10-item Scale (PSS-10), the Personal Wellbeing Index-Adult (PWI-A), sociodemographic characteristics, the time they spent caring per day and the number of Personal Independence Payment and Work Capability Assessment interviews prepared for and attended by the person they cared for. Hierarchical regression analyses were performed to assess the effects of the number of benefit assessments on stress and well-being scores, controlling for carers' sociodemographic characteristics and the time they spent caring. Analyses revealed that the number of times that claimants were exposed to benefit assessments significantly and negatively predicted unpaid carers' well-being and was positively related to their stress levels. After controlling for sociodemographic characteristics and hours supporting per day, benefit assessments predicted 8.1% of perceived stress and 4.3% of well-being variance. Being a female unpaid carer of a disability benefit claimant negatively predicted 7.5% of well-being variance. We use a multi-grain (MG) occupancy model, aided by fine-grain remotely sensed imagery, to simultaneously estimate species-environment associations at both grains, conduct grain optimization to measure response grain, and apply this analysis framework to an example species a medium-sized bird (Tockus deckeni) in a heterogeneous East African landscape. Based on home range analysis of movement data, we calculate an occonservation goals. When two opioids, morphine and naloxone, were used during the early stage of NSC differentiation, increased neurogenesis was observed. However, naloxone methiodide, a membrane impenetrable analog of naloxone, did not affect the NSC differentiation. The abilities of morphine and naloxone to facilitate neurogenesis were also observed in opioid receptor-knockout NSCs. Therefore, morphine and naloxone promote neurogenesis in a receptor-independent manner at least during the early stage. In addition, the receptor-independent functions of opioids were not observed in methylcytosine dioxygenase ten-eleven translocation 1 (Tet1) knockout NSCs. When the expression of opioid receptors increased and the expression of Tet1 decreased during the late stage of NSC differentiation, morphine, but not naloxone, inhibited neurogenesis via traditional receptor-dependent and miR181a-Prox1-Notch-related pathway.   • In birds, the female is heterogametic (ZW) and the male homogametic (ZZ). The small W chromosome comprises only 28 protein coding genes (homologues to Z chromosome counterparts) and a number of repeat regions. Here, we report our analysis of one of these genes, BTF3 (basic transcription factor 3), which exhibits differential expression during gonadogenesis. We measured RNA levels of both Z and W homologues and BTF3 protein levels in male and female gonads during development of the chicken embryo. In addition, BTF3 RNA and protein levels were compared in female gonads (ovary) and in female gonads following treatment to induce sex reversal (testis). Combined BTF3 RNA levels were higher in female gonads than male gonads, while BTF3-Z was expressed at similar levels in males and females. Surprisingly, BTF3 protein levels were higher in male gonads than female gonads at embryonic day 6 (E6), suggesting translational rather than transcriptional regulation. BTF3 protein was expressed in both somatic and germ cells and was restricted to the medulla of the developing ovary in females and the sex cords of the developing testis in males. In addition, in gonadal sex-reversed females, RNA and protein levels of BTF3 were similar to those normally found in male gonads, suggesting that BTF3 expression correlated with the gonadal phenotype. © 2020 S. METHODS We retrospectively analyzed 150 consecutive prostate cancer patients who underwent LRP between July 2015 and June 2018 in our institution. Patients reporting freedom from using safety pad (0 pads/day) were defined as urinary continent. We evaluated the association of urinary continence recovery after LRP and the perioperative variables, including age, prostatic volume (PV), intravesical prostatic protrusion length (IPPL), membranous urethral length (MUL), and neurovascular bundle (NVB) sparing status. Kaplan-Meier and log-rank tests were used to compare urinary continence rates between groups. Univariate and multivariate Cox proportional hazards regression analyses were used to identify independent predictors for urinary continence recovery. METHODS We retrospectively analyzed 73 patients with thoracic esophageal cancer who underwent salvage esophagectomy between January 1997 and December 2017 after definitive chemoradiotherapy. We investigated the clinical impact of postoperative complications on long-term survival after salvage esophagectomy. RESULTS Postoperative complications, pulmonary complications, and anastomotic leakage occurred in 34 (47%), 14 (13%), and 14 (19%) of the patients, respectively. Patients with complications had significantly poorer survival than patients who did not have complications (HR [hazard ratio], 2.06; p = 0.017), but there were no significant differences in overall survival between patients with and those without pulmonary complications or anastomotic leakage (HR, 1.48, p = 0.318, and HR, 1.37, p = 0.377, respectively). Multivariate analysis revealed that pathological T3-4 disease (HR, 4.63; p = 0.001), residual disease (HR, 5.09; p = 0.001), and postoperative complications (HR, 3.85; p = 0.001) were significant independent prognostic factors. In particular, the frequency of death from other diseases among patients with postoperative complications was nonsignificantly higher than among patients without postoperative complications (26 vs. 10%; p = 0.071). CONCLUSION The occurrence of complications leads to a poor prognosis for patients with esophageal cancer after salvage esophagectomy. Prevention of postoperative complications and long-term postoperative general supportive care might be important for improving patients' prognosis. © 2020 S.     In birds, the female is heterogametic (ZW) and the male homogametic (ZZ). The small W chromosome comprises only 28 protein coding genes (homologues to Z chromosome counterparts) and a number of repeat regions. Here, we report our analysis of one of these genes, BTF3 (basic transcription factor 3), which exhibits differential expression during gonadogenesis. We measured RNA levels of both Z and W homologues and BTF3 protein levels in male and female gonads during development of the chicken embryo. In addition, BTF3 RNA and protein levels were compared in female gonads (ovary) and in female gonads following treatment to induce sex reversal (testis). Combined BTF3 RNA levels were higher in female gonads than male gonads, while BTF3-Z was expressed at similar levels in males and females. Surprisingly, BTF3 protein levels were higher in male gonads than female gonads at embryonic day 6 (E6), suggesting translational rather than transcriptional regulation. BTF3 protein was expressed in both somatic and germ cells and was restricted to the medulla of the developing ovary in females and the sex cords of the developing testis in males. Kaplan-Meier and log-rank tests were used to compare urinary continence rates between groups. When autoimmune thyroid disease coexists with FDH, TSH levels are the most reliable biochemical marker of thyroid status. Measurement of FT4 using equilibrium dialysis or ultrafiltration are more reliable but less readily available.OBJECTIVE The relationship between serum creatinine and calcium (Ca) was investigated in hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) patients treated with foscarnet. MATERIALS AND METHODS A retrospective study was performed to investigate the development of foscarnet-induced renal dysfunction in patients who received HSCT from April 2010 to November 2018 at the Kindai University Nara Hospital. A total of 80 patients were identified from the medical records, and 42 patients who met the inclusion criteria were enrolled in this study. Renal dysfunction was classified according to the Kidney Disease Improving Global Outcomes (KDIGO) criteria. RESULTS A significant inverse relationship was observed between serum creatinine and Ca levels (r = -0.372; p less then 0.0001; y = -0.537x + 9.268). A separate analysis divided into renal dysfunction and non-renal dysfunction groups showed that there was a significant relationship between serum creatinine and Ca levels in the renal dysfunction group (r = -0.531; p less then 0.0001; y = -0.617x + 9.239) but not in the non-renal dysfunction group (r = -0.011; p = 0.561; y = -0.023x + 8.934). The optimal cutoff for the minimum Ca level was calculated to be 8.1 mg/mL. CONCLUSION A significant inverse relationship was observed between serum creatinine and Ca levels in HSCT patients with foscarnet-induced renal dysfunction. Foscarnet-induced renal dysfunction should be noted if Ca levels fall below 8.1 mg/dL. Monitoring Ca levels may be useful for detecting renal dysfunction at early stages in patients treated with foscarnet.
.OBJECTIVE This work aims to evaluate the therapeutic survey of adverse events during antiviral treatment of hepatitis in the three major University Hospitals in Abidjan. MATERIALS AND METHODS A retrospective cross-sectional descriptive study of 203 patients from August 1, 2015, to July 31, 2018, enumerated adverse events during antiviral treatments, drugs used for their management, and their clinical or biological impact. RESULTS The following was seen hematological disorders during treatment with pegylated interferon α-2a (88.61%) and ribavirin (77.55%), pain syndrome when using pegylated interferon α-2a (90.5%), and digestive disorders while taking sofosbuvir (60.71%) and daclatasvir (66.67%). Hematological disorders were managed with filgrastim for neutropenia and oral iron or blood transfusion for anemia and/or thrombocytopenia. Pain syndrome was treated with paracetamol. As for digestive disorders, they were most often managed with activated charcoal. CONCLUSION Correction of the adverse events was made either using causal treatment or using symptomatic drugs. However, some drugs, in particular hematopoietic factors, have been less used due to their costs.
.AIM Hypertension is a complex condition, and it is difficult to know whether inflammation is a cause or an effect. Information on the association between MRP-8/14 (myeloid-related protein) and hypertension is limited. In this study, we aimed to examine the relationship of MRP-8/14 with carotid intima-media thickness (CIMT) and albuminuria in hypertensive patients and to investigate whether early assay of MRP-8/14 levels could be helpful in assessment of renal damage and carotid atherosclerosis among hypertensive patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS 61 hypertensive patients and 40 age-, gender-, and body mass index-matched controls were included into the study. Blood samples including fasting blood glucose, total cholesterol, triglycerides, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, total protein, albumin, urea creatinine, uric acid, sedimentation, C-reactive protein (CRP), and MRP-8/14 were collected. 24-hour urine albumin excretion and CIMT measurements were also obtained. RESULTS All inflammatory variables including uric acid, CRP, sedimentation, MRP-8/14, and CIMT were statistically higher in patients with hypertension than in controls. MRP-8/14 was significantly higher in hypertensive patients with macroalbuminuria than in controls (339.3 (IQR (215.2 - 661.7)) ng/mL vs. 204.9 (IQR (140.1 - 339.3)) -ng/mL, p = 0.005, respectively). The levels of CIMT were the highest in macroalbuminuric hypertensive patients (controls vs. normoalbuminuria, microalbuminuria, macroalbuminuria groups, 0.57 (0.53 - 0.67) mm vs. 0.84 (0.76 - 0.89) mm, p = 0.000; 0.57 (0.53 - 0.67) mm vs. 0.87 (0.67 - 0.93) mm, p = 0.000; 0.57 (0.53 - 0.67) mm vs. 0.92 (0.85 - 0.97) mm, p = 0.000, respectively). CONCLUSION Plasma MRP-8/14 levels were elevated in hypertensive patients with macroalbuminuria, however, it could not serve as an early marker to determine renal damage and carotid atherosclerosis in patients with hypertension.

The role of continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT) is not well established for patients with ACLF and AKI. MATERIALS AND METHODS We conducted a retrospective cohort study to examine clinical outcomes in 66 patients with ACLF and AKI requiring CRRT.   • The development of a turn-on lanthanide luminescent probe for time-gated detection of nitroreductases (NTRs) in live bacteria is reported. The probe is activated through NTR-induced formation of the sensitizing carbostyril antenna and resulting energy transfer to the lanthanide center. This novel NTR-responsive trigger is virtually non-fluorescent in its inactivated form and features a large signal increase upon activation. We show that the probe is capable of selectively sensing NTR in lysates as well as in live bacteria comprising clinically highly relevant multiresistant pathogens of the ESKAPE family responsible for the majority of hospital infections. Seventeen-month-old infants watched familiarization events in which a competent agent succeeded in climbing hills while an incompetent agent failed to do so. In subsequent test events, the competent agent either helped the incompetent agent reach the top of the hill (helping event) or simply passed the incompetent agent and reached the top of the hill alone (ignoring event). The infants looked reliably longer at the ignoring event than at the helping event. These findings suggest that, by at least the age of 17 months, infants expect a competent agent to help an incompetent agent. Our findings provide evidence that infants in their second year of life possess some expectations of others' prosociality. Statement of contribution What is already known? Infants begin to reliably produce helping behaviours during their second year of life. Infants expect others to help an agent who is in need, not one who is not in need. Infants expect others to help, not ignore, another in need when linguistic information explicitly signals that the agent and the recipient belong to the same social group. We examined whether children provide more symbolic interpretations of figurative statements in drawings relative to verbal explanations, and whether drawing facilitates overall symbolic interpretation. Ninety-six children were split into three age groups (5-6, 7-8, and 9-10 years) in a between-subjects design. In the 'draw-first' condition, they were asked to depict then explain figurative statements (e.g., raining like cats and dogs), and in the 'explain-first' condition, children were asked to explain before drawing. We coded for symbolic or literal content. Overall, children provided more symbolic responses for verbal explanations compared to drawings, with a developmental increase. More symbolic responses occurred in the 'draw-first' condition compared to other task by condition combinations, suggesting drawing can facilitate subsequent symbolic verbal explanation. We discuss the links between drawings, figurative language, and development. Statement of contribution What is already known on this subject? Results based on the Bayesian statistics showed that (1) there was extreme evidence in favour of grade differences in both semantic processing and spatial processing; (2) there were no gender differences in semantic processing; and (3) boys developed earlier than girls in spatial processing of numbers, especially for the more difficult task. METHODS The curriculum presented didactic material interspersed with hands-on practice. Psychomotor skill was measured by the angle error of the acquired image view plane relative to the correct image view plane. The rate of learning was assessed at baseline, after 7 practice cases, and after 10 cases. To assess the rate of learning, the same case was repeatedly presented at all three tests. To assess students' ability to apply their learning, a previously unseen post-test was included. RESULTS A total of 41 students completed the course.     The development of a turn-on lanthanide luminescent probe for time-gated detection of nitroreductases (NTRs) in live bacteria is reported. The probe is activated through NTR-induced formation of the sensitizing carbostyril antenna and resulting energy transfer to the lanthanide center. This novel NTR-responsive trigger is virtually non-fluorescent in its inactivated form and features a large signal increase upon activation. We show that the probe is capable of selectively sensing NTR in lysates as well as in live bacteria comprising clinically highly relevant multiresistant pathogens of the ESKAPE family responsible for the majority of hospital infections. Seventeen-month-old infants watched familiarization events in which a competent agent succeeded in climbing hills while an incompetent agent failed to do so. In subsequent test events, the competent agent either helped the incompetent agent reach the top of the hill (helping event) or simply passed the incompetent agent and reached the top of the hill alone (ignoring event). The infants looked reliably longer at the ignoring event than at the helping event. These findings suggest that, by at least the age of 17 months, infants expect a competent agent to help an incompetent agent. Our findings provide evidence that infants in their second year of life possess some expectations of others' prosociality. Statement of contribution What is already known? Infants begin to reliably produce helping behaviours during their second year of life. Infants expect others to help an agent who is in need, not one who is not in need. Infants expect others to help, not ignore, another in need when linguistic information explicitly signals that the agent and the recipient belong to the same social group. What the present study adds? Infants expect someone to provide help rather than to ignore another in need under some circumstances with no linguistic information about their social group membership. We examined whether children provide more symbolic interpretations of figurative statements in drawings relative to verbal explanations, and whether drawing facilitates overall symbolic interpretation. Ninety-six children were split into three age groups (5-6, 7-8, and 9-10 years) in a between-subjects design. In the 'draw-first' condition, they were asked to depict then explain figurative statements (e.g., raining like cats and dogs), and in the 'explain-first' condition, children were asked to explain before drawing. We coded for symbolic or literal content. Overall, children provided more symbolic responses for verbal explanations compared to drawings, with a developmental increase. More symbolic responses occurred in the 'draw-first' condition compared to other task by condition combinations, suggesting drawing can facilitate subsequent symbolic verbal explanation. Results based on the Bayesian statistics showed that (1) there was extreme evidence in favour of grade differences in both semantic processing and spatial processing; (2) there were no gender differences in semantic processing; and (3) boys developed earlier than girls in spatial processing of numbers, especially for the more difficult task. METHODS The curriculum presented didactic material interspersed with hands-on practice. Psychomotor skill was measured by the angle error of the acquired image view plane relative to the correct image view plane. The rate of learning was assessed at baseline, after 7 practice cases, and after 10 cases. To assess the rate of learning, the same case was repeatedly presented at all three tests. To assess students' ability to apply their learning, a previously unseen post-test was included. RESULTS A total of 41 students completed the course.   • Dynamic nuclear polarization (DNP) has gained large interest due to its ability to increase signal intensities in nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) experiments by several orders of magnitude. Currently, DNP is typically used to enhance high-field, solid-state NMR experiments. However, the method is also capable of dramatically increasing the observed signal intensities in solution-state NMR spectroscopy. In this work, we demonstrate the application of Overhauser dynamic nuclear polarization (ODNP) spectroscopy at an NMR frequency of 14.5 MHz (0.35 T) to observe DNP-enhanced high-resolution NMR spectra of small molecules in solutions. Using a compact hybrid magnet with integrated shim coils to improve the magnetic field homogeneity we are able to routinely obtain proton linewidths of less than 4 Hz and enhancement factors >30. The excellent field resolution allows us to perform chemical-shift resolved ODNP experiments on ethyl crotonate to observe proton J-coupling. Furthermore, recording high-resolution ODNP-enhanced NMR spectra of ethylene glycol allows us to characterize the microwave induced sample heating in-situ, by measuring the separation of the OH and CH2 proton peaks. Switching gradients generate eddy currents and mechanical vibrations of the gradient assembly causing errors in the gradient time integrals. This results in image distortions in k-space and inaccuracies in q-space imaging. The purpose of this work is to develop an MRI based unbiased measurement of the switched gradient impulse response function (sGIRF). A new gradient pattern, called the Tukey windowed Shifted Sine-Integral (Tw-SSI) pulse, is introduced to excite the gradient eigenmodes uniformly over a user-defined bandwidth. A 3D MRI-based method with Hadamard encoding was developed to map the spatiotemporal magnetic field generated after the excitation pulse to obtain the sGIRF for all the three gradient axes simultaneously. Compared to an energy-equivalent traditional trapezoidal pulse, the Tw-SSI pulse is able to excite the weak bandlimited cross-terms of the sGIRF by uniformly distributing the energy across eigenmodes. The developed field mapping method is sensitive enough to capture both the direct and cross-terms in the sGIRF. The various mechanical resonant modes of the gradient coils are also revealed, which were found to last longer than eddy currents in the shielded gradient coil studied. Tunable Tw-SSI pulse offers the flexibility to perform unbiased sGIRF measurements over a bandwidth of interest. METHODS Brain MRIs of C2M patients at a single tertiary care adult institution were retrospectively reviewed. We also evaluated two age and gender-matched control groups-patients with normal brain MRI (C1 group) and chronic ventricular shunts (C2 group). The heights of tuberculum sella, dorsum sella, and pituitary gland were measured and compared. The presence or absence of dural thickening was noted. RESULTS 21 patients were included in each group. In C2M group, a pituitary adenoma was suggested on 24% of the MRIs. The dorsum sella was significantly smaller in the C2M group (4.8 mm) compared to both the C1 group (7.4 mm, p  less then  0.001) and the C2 group (7.1 mm, p  less then  0.001). The pituitary gland was also larger in the cranial-caudal dimension in C2M group (8.6 mm) as compared to both the C1 group (6.6 mm, p  less then  0.01) and the C2 group (6.0 mm, p  less then  0.001). One C2M patient with a pituitary gland less then 10 mm was suggested to have a pituitary adenoma on outside MRI, although a normal pituitary gland was seen on pathology. CONCLUSION C2M patients have shallow sella which can accentuate the pituitary gland height. The mean pituitary height was larger in C2M patients, but no functional pituitary pathology was present. It is important to consider sella morphology when evaluating the pituitary gland of C2M patients to avoid unnecessary medical and surgical interventions. Red mud (RM) is a solid waste rich in iron oxide, which has the potential to be utilized as the catalyst for selective catalytic reduction (SCR) of NOx. We pretreated the RM sample with the selective acid leaching method, after which 97.6 % of the alkali was neutralized, and only 8 % of the Fe2O3 were leached out. Once leached, the RM samples were activated for the SCR reaction. It showed NOx conversions above 90 % in 310-430 °C and exhibited high resistance to SO2 and H2O. After leaching, i. the SBET reached twice as before; ii. the sintering caused by alkali was eliminated; iii. the activated RM exhibited improved Fe3+/Fe2+ ratio and enhanced chemisorbed surface oxygen (Oα); iv. the oxygen mobility and the surface acidity were promoted. Overall, the selective acid leaching is an efficient method to activate RM for the SCR reaction. The RM based catalysts can be an alternative for SCR technology. The direct injection of a sorbent in the furnace as a primary deacidification stage may be a cost-effective option to achieve the required performances. The present study investigated the furnace injection of a specific dolomitic sorbent, with the aim of identifying the techno-economic optimum for the sorbent feed rate considering different scenarios of flue gas composition. A full-scale test run campaign was carried out on two WtE plants and a phenomenological model linking HCl and SO2 conversion to reactant feed rate was developed. The model allowed assessing the cost-effectiveness of dolomitic sorbent furnace injection for WtE plants equipped with either a single or a two-stage acid gas treatment system. The addition of dolomitic sorbent resulted particularly suitable for WtE plants equipped with a single stage treatment coping with a high SO2 concentration in the flue gas, where the injection of dolomitic sorbent can increase the redundancy of flue gas treatment with a reduction of the total operating costs.

  • Leadership is a critical aspect of residency training; however, little guidance is provided in the literature regarding practical implementation of leadership training within residency programming. Programming was developed within a second-year (PGY-2) critical care residency program to meet the educational and leadership needs of the residents. The format of the meetings has evolved over time from a journal club-style format to an interdisciplinary format discussing far more than literature. With the residents taking the lead in the biweekly educational sessions, there is great opportunity for leadership development. Similar programming has the potential to strengthen residency experiences for residents in other programs. © 2019 American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy.Objective. To design, implement, and psychometrically evaluate a situational judgement test (SJT) to use as a formative assessment of pharmacy students' non-academic skills in an Australian-based university. Methods. An SJT was developed using a previously validated design process including involvement of subject matter experts. The first phase included design of a blueprint through stakeholder consultation and the development of bespoke attribute definitions and a tool specification. Following on from this, SJT items were developed through subject matter expert interviews and in-depth review process. Results. Students (702) from four different cohorts (first through fourth years) of a Bachelor of Pharmacy degree program completed the situational judgment test. https://www.selleckchem.com/products/Cyt387.html Data from 648 students was eligible for inclusion in the analysis. The SJT demonstrated good reliability, appropriateness for use (difficulty and quality), fairness, and face validity. Evaluation of the SJT demonstrated that the tool was valid, reliable, fair and appropriate to use as a formative assessment. Through implementing an SJT such as this, pharmacy students are provided the opportunity to receive feedback on their non-academic skills and consider how to approach challenging or unfamiliar situations before entering the profession. © 2019 American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy.Objective. A six-item questionnaire was administered to students after completion of each of the virtual programs to elicit students' perceptions of the value and relevance of the virtual programs. Additional data related to the relevance of specific workshops were collected, including students' self-reported confidence levels to undertake placement in a real-world setting following completion of the virtual programs. Results. Surveys were completed by 61 students in the VCP program and 50 students in the VHP program. Students perceived the virtual programs to be beneficial, with the majority (84% of the VCP students and 98% of the VHP students) reporting that the programs should be an essential component of any pharmacy degree. The majority of students (72%) self-reported an increase in their confidence levels in undertaking a real-world experiential placement after they completed their virtual hospital placement. Conclusion. Completing virtual placement programs prior to pharmacy students beginning their first "real world" pharmacy placements had a positive effect on student learning and confidence levels. Its occurrence in elbow joint is frequently misdiagnosed because of its rare incidence and similar clinical presentation with other acute conditions of elbow like trauma, infection and tennis elbow. Characteristic symptoms of this condition are acute onset of pain, tenderness and swelling on the lateral aspect the elbow. Plain Radiograph is the primary modality to distinguish and evaluate this condition. Awareness and familiarity with this condition helps in early diagnosis and avoids unnecessary treatments and biopsy as this condition is self-limited.     2D6 (CYP2D6) enzyme metabolizes a quarter of prescription drugs. Polymorphisms of CYP2D6 gene and resultant phenotypic variations in metabolic activity have been described in various populations. We assessed the prevalence of CYP2D6 activity phenotypes, employing dextromethorphan (DXM) as probe drug in subjects with at least two parental generations residing in eastern India.

    Unrelated healthy subjects took 60 mg DXM after fasting overnight. Blood samples were collected 3 h after dosing and plasma separated. DXM and its primary metabolite dextrorphan (DXT) were measured by liquid chromatography with tandem mass spectrometry. The DXM-to-DXT metabolic ratio (MR) was obtained for each subject. Histogram of MR values suggested bimodal distribution. A polynomial regression equation derived through probit analysis was solved to identify the antimode of the MR values. Subjects with log(MR) < antimode were extensive metabolizers (EMs). Log(MR) ≥ antimode indicated poor metabolizers (PMs).

This study was conducted to assess the (i) AMM consumption and use patterns in patients attending the outpatients and inpatients of Medicine and Surgery departments of the hospital. (ii) Appropriateness of the AMM in the treatment prescribed, and (iii) cost incurred on their use in admitted patients.

    An observational, prospective study was conducted among inpatients and outpatients of the Medicine and Surgery departments of a tertiary care hospital of northern India. Analysis of 2128 prescriptions and 200 inpatient records was performed using a predesigned format. The use of AMMs was reviewed using anatomical therapeutic chemical classification and defined daily doses (DDDs). To evaluate the expenditure incurred on AMMs, ABC analysis was performed.

These patients are in need of lifelong transfusion therapy and hence lifelong iron chelation therapy as well. Hence, this study was aimed to assess the effectiveness of deferasirox for iron chelation in pediatric thalassemia cases in a tertiary care hospital of Eastern India.

    This prospective, observational, hospital-based study was conducted from June 2015 to December 2016. Two hundred and fifty patients were assessed for eligibility, of which 174 were included. Effectiveness of deferasirox was observed by measuring serum ferritin levels which were monitored at the end of every 3 months till 1 year. We also evaluated the compliance with deferasirox therapy in the same study cohort.

    The serum ferritin level reduced significantly at the end of 12 months in comparison to baseline (
    = 0.04). There was a mean absolute decrease in serum ferritin only in the dose range of 21-30 mg/kg/day. Approximately 90% of the patients had 100% compliance with deferasirox therapy.
