  • Background Strategies of promotion, prevention and health care of individuals with cardiometabolic risk are necessary to control cardiovascular diseases.Objective To describe a study design and present partial results of nutritional counseling in the Cardiovascular Health Care Program (PROCARDIO).Methods PROCARDIO is a nutritional intervention program for students and workers or dependents of the Brazilian university academic community who are at risk of or have a cardiovascular disease (Brazilian Registry of Clinical Trials n° RBR-5n4y2g). Patients are submitted to nutritional clinical assessments involving anthropometry, biochemical analysis, sociodemographic and clinical, lifestyle and dietary data. Patients are provided with nutritional counseling, dietetic workshops and educational materials. In addition, nutritional following-ups are performed monthly.Results The sample consisted of 296 patients (171 F/125 M, 27-56 years). The prevalence of individuals with excess body weight, dyslipidemia, diabetes and hypertension in the sample were 74.7% (n = 222), 79.1% (n = 235), 18.2% (n = 54) and 25.3% (n = 75), respectively. Objective This study aims to investigate the feasibility and credibility of smartphone photoplethysmogram (PPG)-based HRV analysis for mental well-being and health assessment. Methods Data were collected from 93 students and university employees in Shenzhen, China. Forty-six percent were male, and the average age was 23.71 years (σ = 4.33). An app recorded a 4-min video of their fingertips and converted the frames into five HRV measures, including the root mean square of successive differences (rMSSD), standard deviation of the normal-to-normal (NN) intervals (SDNN), percentage of successive NN intervals differing by ≥50 ms (pNN50), log high-frequency (HF) HRV, and log low-frequency (LF) HRV. Results The data verify the positive relationship between mental well-being and HRV measures. Participants with higher Satisfaction With Life Scale (SWLS) scores have a higher rMSSD (p = 0.047), SDNN (p = 0.009), log HF (p = 0.02), and log LF (p = 0.003). Participants who suffer from depression have lower log HF (p = 0.048) and log LF (p = 0.02). Participants in the high-anxiety group have lower pNN50 (p = 0.04) and log HF (p = 0.03). Conclusions The results of this study validate the feasibility of using the smartphone PPG by demonstrating similar results to previous findings. Phenotypic drug susceptibility testing against SLIDs (Kanamycin, Amikacin, and Capreomycin) and Ofloxacin (OFX) was performed using the MGIT 960 system. For genotypic analysis, SLID/(s) resistant (n = 13) and susceptible isolates (n = 26) were subjected to PCR and DNA sequencing for rrs, eis (promoter region), and tlyA loci of MTB. Furthermore, the identified genetic mutations were analyzed with respect to its significance in detecting phenotypic resistance. Result Among the 110 analyzed isolates, phenotypic resistance to OFX, SLIDs, and to both was 59.1%, 11.8%, and 10.0%, respectively. Out of a total 13 SLID/(s) resistant isolates, 10 had mutations (including two novel mutations) in one or more of the targeted genes. Only one SLID susceptible MTB isolate showed mutation in the targeted region. In SLID resistant isolates, most frequent mutation detected was C-12T under eis promoter region (46.1%). Conclusion Mutations in rrs, eis, and tly A loci together are important in predicting SLID resistance in MTB isolates. Future molecular epidemiology studies are needed to have more insight into frequency and clinical relevance of novel mutations identified in this study.Among non-albicans Candida species, Candida glabrata is the leading cause of invasive infections in critically ill patients. During 8-year period (2011-2018), 1,410 isolates were obtained from 1,410 patients including 600, 409, and 131 isolates from respiratory, urine, and bloodstream specimens, respectively. Proportion of C. glabrata isolates was nearly the same during the two 4-year periods. Demographic details were available from 731 patients and susceptibility data for 1,225 isolates. C. glabrata isolation from bloodstream, respiratory, and urine specimens was higher from elderly (>60 years) versus younger patients.   • In addition, genome-wide association studies (GWAS) have identified a number of common alleles (SNPs), which increase the risk of developing lupus in adult age. Discovery of a possible shared immune pathway in SLE patients, either with rare or common variants, can provide important clues to better understand this complex disorder, it's prognosis and can help guide new therapeutic approaches. The aim of this review is to summarize the current knowledge of the clinical presentation, genetic diagnosis and mechanisms of disease in patents with lupus and lupus-related phenotypes.In this study, the effect of wall thickness (15-25 mm) on the stress-strain response of hollow-cylinder rubber fenders were investigated by conducting monotonic compression tests. It was found that a progressive increase in lateral bending deformation was observed during monotonic compression. Simultaneously, the extent of the lateral deflection decreased notably with an increasing wall thickness. From the experimental results, the fact is accepted that buckling occurred in the tested fender due to the fact that the ratio of the height to the wall thickness was higher than four in all of the considered cases. Moreover, an s-shape profile appeared in the stress-strain curves, which became clearer as the wall thickness was reduced from 25 to 15 mm. To assess the performance of fenders objectively, an energy-effectiveness index, C E R , was introduced to quantify the energy absorption capacity of the fender. From the experimental observations, it was inferred that the contact area of the folded inner surface of the fender produced under compression generated an additional reaction force and affected the shape of the stress-strain curve since the measured load consisted of two reaction forces one caused by the self-contact area, and the other resulted from the compression-bending deformation that occurred in the side wall of the fender. To examine this assertion, a finite element analysis (FEA) was conducted and confirmed the effect of the reaction force on the sensitivity of the s-shape characteristic of the stress-strain curve. Finally, a polynomial regression was conducted and the calculated results based on the fourth-degree stress polynomial function correlated very well with the measured stress-strain curves.Local Positioning Systems are collecting high research interest over the last few years. In this paper, we develop a new sensor deployment methodology to guarantee the system availability in case of a sensor failure of a five-node Time Difference of Arrival (TDOA) localization method. It was found that the mechanical strength of mortar increased when replaced with up to 30% NS by RIP. In addition, the increase was 30% for compressive, 18% for tensile, and 47% for flexural strength at 28 days, respectively, compared to the reference mortar (mortar made with 100% NS). Shrinkage was observed for the mortar made with 100% NS, while both shrinkage and expansion occurred in the mortar made with RIP, especially for RIP higher than 5%. Furthermore, significantly lower porosity and capillary water absorption were observed for mortar made with up to 30% RIP, compared to that made with 100% NS, which decreased by 36% for porosity and 48% for water absorption.

  • When seeking a human for a blood meal, mosquitoes use several cues to detect and find their hosts. From this knowledge, counter-flow odour-baited traps have been developed that use a combination of CO
    , human-mimicking odour, visual cues and circulating airflow to attract and capture mosquitoes. Initially developed for monitoring, these traps are now also being considered as promising vector control tools. The traps are attractive to host-seeking mosquitoes, but their capture efficiency is low. It has been hypothesized that the lack of short-range host cues, such as heat and increased local humidity, often prevent mosquitoes from getting close enough to get caught; this lack might even trigger avoidance manoeuvres near the capture region.

    This study investigated how close-range host cues affect the flight behaviour of Anopheles female malaria mosquitoes around odour-baited traps, and how this affects trap capture performance. For this, a novel counter-flow odour-baited trap was developed, the M-Tego. In ults suggest that adding heat and humidity to an odour-baited trap lures more mosquitoes close to the trap and retains them there longer, resulting in higher capture performance. These findings support the development of control tools for fighting mosquito-borne diseases such as malaria.

    Malaria, malnutrition and anaemia are major public health problems in Yemen, with Hodeidah being the most malaria-afflicted governorate. To address the lack of relevant studies, this study was conducted to determine the prevalence of Plasmodium falciparum and its relation to nutritional status and haematological indices among schoolchildren in Bajil district of Hodeidah governorate, west of Yemen.

    A cross-sectional study was conducted among 400 schoolchildren selected randomly from four schools in Bajil district. Data about demographic characteristics, risk factors and anthropometric measurements of age, height and weight were collected. In vivo, CRT silencing decreased subcutaneous tumor size and distant liver metastasis following with the increase of IRE1α expression. A negative relationship between CRT and IRE1α was also observed in clinical PC samples, which coordinately promoted the advanced clinical stages and poor prognosis of PC patients.

    When seeking a human for a blood meal, mosquitoes use several cues to detect and find their hosts. From this knowledge, counter-flow odour-baited traps have been developed that use a combination of CO , human-mimicking odour, visual cues and circulating airflow to attract and capture mosquitoes. Initially developed for monitoring, these traps are now also being considered as promising vector control tools. The traps are attractive to host-seeking mosquitoes, but their capture efficiency is low. It has been hypothesized that the lack of short-range host cues, such as heat and increased local humidity, often prevent mosquitoes from getting close enough to get caught; this lack might even trigger avoidance manoeuvres near the capture region. This study investigated how close-range host cues affect the flight behaviour of Anopheles female malaria mosquitoes around odour-baited traps, and how this affects trap capture performance. In this study, IDH was defined as a decrease in systolic BP by >20 mm Hg or a decrease in mean arterial pressure by >10 mm Hg, associated to a clinical event. Logistic regression analysis was used to determine associated factors. We included 104 patients (69 males) with a mean age of 50.74 ± 15.18 years and a median duration on HD of 30.5 (interquartile range 12.25-58.75) years. Hypertension 99/104 (95.2%) and diabetes 32/104 (30.8%) were the main comorbidities encountered. A total of 1032 HD sessions were followed up with an average of 9.88 ± 1.57 sessions per patient. IDH occurred in 11.6% of HD sessions. Associated factors were age, female sex, HIV infection, feeding during dialysis, and use of antihypertensive drug during or within 2 h before dialysis. The prevalence of IDH in our study was low. Associated factors were mainly related to patient's characteristics and comorbidities.The financial cost of inpatient care of chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients has not been well described in Nigeria; even though, the majority of these patients require inpatient care at the time of diagnosis due to late presentation. The financial records of the ward, laboratory, dialysis, pharmacy, and dietary services were obtained for each patient during their hospital stay and the sum of these costs was taken as the total direct cost of care. One hundred and twenty- three CKD patients with a malefemale ratio of 2.31 and mean age of 50 ± 17 years were studied. One hundred and six (86.2%) patients had Stage 5 CKD, 105 (85.4%) had emergency hemodialysis (HD) at presentation and all patients paid out of pocket. The median number of HD sessions and days spent on admission was 4 and 14 days, respectively. The major contributors to the cost of care were total dialysis, ward, and pharmacy expenses with a median total cost of ₦70,000 (US $200), ₦28,000 ($80), and ₦22,230 ($66), respectively. The median total direct cost of inpatient care of CKD was ₦150,770 ($431). The cost of care was higher in those with Stage 5 CKD and diabetic nephropathy. The cost of inpatient care of CKD is beyond the reach of most Nigerians. There is a definite need for the government to include CKD care under the national insurance scheme.

  • Alternative therapies are necessary for the treatment of malaria due to emerging drug resistance. However, many promising antimalarial compounds have poor water solubility and suffer from the lack of suitable delivery systems, which seriously limits their activity. To address this problem, we synthesized a series of azacarbazoles that were evaluated for antimalarial activity against D10 (chloroquine-sensitive) and W2 (chloroquine-resistant) strains of P. falciparum. The most active compound, 9H-3-azacarbazole (3), was encapsulated in a novel o/w nanoemulsion consisting of ethyl esters of polyunsaturated fatty acids n-3 and n-6 obtained from flax oil as the oil phase, Smix (Tween 80 and Transcutol HP) and water. This formulation was further analyzed using transmission electron microscopy, dynamic light scattering and in vitro and in vivo studies. It was shown that droplets of the 3-loaded nanosystem were spherical, with satisfactory stability, without cytotoxicity towards fibroblasts and intestinal cell lines at concentrations corresponding to twice the IC50 for P. falciparum. Moreover, the nanoemulsion with this type of oil phase was internalized by Caco-2 cells. Additionally, pharmacokinetics demonstrated rapid absorption of compound 3 (tmax = 5.0 min) after intragastric administration of 3-encapsulated nanoemulsion at a dose of 0.02 mg/kg in ****, with penetration of compound 3 to deep compartments. The 3-encapsulated nanoemulsion was found to be 2.8 and 4.2 times more effective in inhibiting the D10 and W2 strains of the parasite, respectively, compared to non-encapsulated 3. Hydrogels with high osmotic pressure and high viscosity are used as an alternate; however, with some drawbacks such as tissue damage, excessive injection resistance, and high cost. Here, we reported a nature derived hydrogel of gelatin-oxidized alginate (G-OALG). Based on the rheological analysis and compare to commercial endoscopic mucosal resection (EMR) solution (0.25% hyaluronic acid, HA), a designed G-OALG hydrogel of desired concentration and composition showed higher performances in controllable gelation and injectability, higher viscosity and more stable structures. The G-OALG gel also showed lower propulsion resistance than 0.25% HA in the injection force assessment under standard endoscopic instruments, which eased the surgical operation. In addition, the G-OALG hydrogel showed good in vivo degradability biocompatibility. Matrigel embedding is problematic for long-term culture and clinical applications due to high inconsistency and other limitations. In this study, we developed a novel microwell culture platform based on 3D printing. This platform, without using Matrigel or external signaling molecules (i.e., SMAD and Wnt inhibitors), successfully generated matured human cerebral organoids with robust formation of high-level features (i.e., wrinkling/folding, lumens, neuronal layers). The formation and timing were comparable or superior to the current Matrigel methods, yet with improved consistency. The effect of microwell geometries (curvature and resolution) and coating materials (i.e., mPEG, Lipidure, BSA) was studied, showing that mPEG outperformed all other coating materials, while curved-bottom microwells outperformed flat-bottom ones. In addition, high-resolution printing outperformed low-resolution printing by creating faithful, isotropically-shaped microwells. The trend of these effects was consistent across all developmental characteristics, including EB formation efficiency and sphericity, organoid size, wrinkling index, lumen size and thickness, and neuronal layer thickness. Overall, the microwell device that was mPEG-coated, high-resolution printed, and bottom curved demonstrated the highest efficacy in promoting organoid development. This platform provided a promising strategy for generating uniform and mature human cerebral organoids as an alternative to Matrigel/ECM-embedding methods.

To address this problem, we synthesized a series of azacarbazoles that were evaluated for antimalarial activity against D10 (chloroquine-sensitive) and W2 (chloroquine-resistant) strains of P. falciparum. The most active compound, 9H-3-azacarbazole (3), was encapsulated in a novel o/w nanoemulsion consisting of ethyl esters of polyunsaturated fatty acids n-3 and n-6 obtained from flax oil as the oil phase, Smix (Tween 80 and Transcutol HP) and water. This formulation was further analyzed using transmission electron microscopy, dynamic light scattering and in vitro and in vivo studies. It was shown that droplets of the 3-loaded nanosystem were spherical, with satisfactory stability, without cytotoxicity towards fibroblasts and intestinal cell lines at concentrations corresponding to twice the IC50 for P. falciparum. Moreover, the nanoemulsion with this type of oil phase was internalized by Caco-2 cells. Additionally, pharmacokinetics demonstrated rapid absorption of compound 3 (tmax = 5.0 min) after intragastric administration of 3-encapsulated nanoemulsion at a dose of 0.02 mg/kg in mice, with penetration of compound 3 to deep compartments. The 3-encapsulated nanoemulsion was found to be 2.8 and 4.2 times more effective in inhibiting the D10 and W2 strains of the parasite, respectively, compared to non-encapsulated 3. Matrigel embedding is problematic for long-term culture and clinical applications due to high inconsistency and other limitations. In this study, we developed a novel microwell culture platform based on 3D printing. This platform, without using Matrigel or external signaling molecules (i.e., SMAD and Wnt inhibitors), successfully generated matured human cerebral organoids with robust formation of high-level features (i.e., wrinkling/folding, lumens, neuronal layers). The formation and timing were comparable or superior to the current Matrigel methods, yet with improved consistency. The effect of microwell geometries (curvature and resolution) and coating materials (i.e., mPEG, Lipidure, BSA) was studied, showing that mPEG outperformed all other coating materials, while curved-bottom microwells outperformed flat-bottom ones. In addition, high-resolution printing outperformed low-resolution printing by creating faithful, isotropically-shaped microwells. The trend of these effects was consistent across all developmental characteristics, including EB formation efficiency and sphericity, organoid size, wrinkling index, lumen size and thickness, and neuronal layer thickness. Overall, the microwell device that was mPEG-coated, high-resolution printed, and bottom curved demonstrated the highest efficacy in promoting organoid development.   • Colorectal cancer (CRC) is a global healthcare problem. Radioresistance is a huge setback for CRC radiotherapy. In this text, the roles and molecular mechanisms of long non-coding RNA HOTAIR in CRC tumorigenesis and radioresistance were further investigated. ATG12 mRNA, HOTAIR, and microRNA-93 (miR-93) levels were measured by quantitative reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR) assay. Protein levels of LC3 I, LC3 II, p62, ATG12, cleaved caspase 3, Bax, and Bcl-2 were detected by western blotting assay in cells and were examined by immunohistochemistry (IHC) assay in tissues. Cell survival fractions, viability, and apoptotic rates were determined by clonogenic survival assay, CCK-8 assay, and flow cytometry analysis, respectively. The relationships of HOTAIR, miR-93, and ATG12 were tested by bioinformatics analysis and luciferase reporter assay. Mouse xenograft tumor models were established to investigate the influence of HOTAIR knockdown on CRC radioresistance in vivo. We found that HOTAIR expression was markedly upregulated in plasma from CRC patients after radiotherapy and CRC cells after irradiation. HOTAIR knockdown, miR-93 overexpression, or ATG12 silencing weakened cell viability, induced cell apoptosis, inhibited cell autophagy, and enhanced cell radiosensitivity in CRC. HOTAIR exerted its functions by downregulating miR-93. Moreover, HOTAIR functioned as a molecular sponge of miR-93 to regulate ATG12 expression. ATG12 protein expression was markedly upregulated and associated with miR-93 and HOTAIR expression in CRC tissues. PubMed, Web of Science, Embase databases, and major conference proceedings were searched for randomized controlled trials (RCTs) of bortezomib-based regimens as consolidation or maintenance therapy for MM. Ten RCTs enrolling 3147 patients were included in the meta-analysis. Bortezomib-based regimens were compared with regimens without bortezomib or observation. The meta-analysis suggested that bortezomib-based maintenance therapy improved progression-free survival (PFS; hazard ratio [HR] = 0.72, 95% CI 0.55-0.95, P = 0.02) and overall survival (OS; HR = 0.71, 95% CI 0.58-0.87, P = 0.001). Bortezomib-based consolidation therapy improved PFS (HR = 0.77, 95% CI 0.68-0.88, P  less then  0.001) but not OS (HR = 0.98, 95% CI 0.78-1.24, P = 0.87). First, the expression of SOX2 was not only associated with poor differentiation and prognosis but also promoted angiogenesis and VM. Knockdown of SOX2 ceased stemness properties, angiogenesis, and VM, along with decreased expression of CD133, CD31, and VE-cadherin as observed in functional experiments. Downregulation of SOX2 was found to inhibit tumorigenesis in vivo. Second, miR-450a-5p suppressed the expression of SOX2 by targeting its 3'UTR region directly and hence restrained SOX2-induced CSC properties, angiogenesis, and VM. Moreover, SOX2 overexpression preserved the miR-450a-5p-induced inhibition of CRC properties, angiogenesis, and VM. Finally, clinical samples exhibited a negative correlation between miR-450a-5p and SOX2. Patients with higher SOX2 and lower miR-450a-5p expressions had a poorer prognosis than patients with inverse expressions. However, the effects mediated by P300 knockdown were abolished by aPKC-ι overexpression. Further studies showed that P300 upregulates aPKC-ι expression through increasing the transcription of Elk1, a transcriptional activator of aPKC-ι, and stabilizing Elk1 protein and its phosphorylation.

Such images reveal a highly ordered atomic arrangement of sharp grain boundaries and coherent perovskite/PbI2 interfaces, with a striking absence of long-range disorder in the crystal. We found that beam-induced degradation of the perovskite leads to an initial loss of formamidinium [CH(NH2)2+] ions, leaving behind a partially unoccupied perovskite lattice, which explains the unusual regenerative properties of these materials. We further observed aligned point defects and climb-dissociated dislocations. The emerging multidisciplinary field of the physical sciences of cancer is now embraced by engineers, physicists, cell biologists, developmental biologists, tumor biologists, and oncologists attempting to understand how physical parameters and processes affect cancer progression and treatment. Discoveries in this field are starting to be translated into new therapeutic strategies for cancer. In this Review, we propose four physical traits of tumors that contribute to tumor progression and treatment resistance (i) elevated solid stresses (compression and tension), (ii) elevated interstitial fluid pressure, (iii) altered material properties (for example, increased tissue stiffness, which historically has been used to detect cancer by palpation), and (iv) altered physical microarchitecture. After defining these physical traits, we discuss their causes, consequences, and how they complement the biological hallmarks of cancer.
    Overexpression of miR-100 in stem cells derived from basal-like breast cancers causes loss of stemness, induction of luminal breast cancer markers and response to endocrine therapy. We, therefore, explored miR-100 as a novel biomarker in patients with luminal breast cancer.

    Baseline miR-100 was significantly anticorrelated with baseline and post-treatment Ki67 (p<0.001 and 0.004, respectively), and independently associated with response to treatment (OR 3.329, p=0.047). In the METABRIC dataset, high expression of miR-100 identified women with luminal A tumours treated with adjuvant endocrine therapy with improved overall survival (HR 0.55, p<0.001). miR-100 was negatively correlated with PLK1, FOXA1, mTOR and IGF1R expression, potentially explaining its prognostic effect. Finally, a miR-100-based signature developed in patients enrolled in the prospective study outperformed Ki67 alone in predicting the luminal A phenotype.

We found that beam-induced degradation of the perovskite leads to an initial loss of formamidinium [CH(NH2)2+] ions, leaving behind a partially unoccupied perovskite lattice, which explains the unusual regenerative properties of these materials. We further observed aligned point defects and climb-dissociated dislocations. Our findings thus provide an atomic-level understanding of technologically important lead halide perovskites.The role of the physical microenvironment in tumor development, progression, metastasis, and treatment is gaining appreciation. The emerging multidisciplinary field of the physical sciences of cancer is now embraced by engineers, physicists, cell biologists, developmental biologists, tumor biologists, and oncologists attempting to understand how physical parameters and processes affect cancer progression and treatment. Discoveries in this field are starting to be translated into new therapeutic strategies for cancer. In this Review, we propose four physical traits of tumors that contribute to tumor progression and treatment resistance (i) elevated solid stresses (compression and tension), (ii) elevated interstitial fluid pressure, (iii) altered material properties (for example, increased tissue stiffness, which historically has been used to detect cancer by palpation), and (iv) altered physical microarchitecture. After defining these physical traits, we discuss their causes, consequences, and how they complement the biological hallmarks of cancer. Overexpression of miR-100 in stem cells derived from basal-like breast cancers causes loss of stemness, induction of luminal breast cancer markers and response to endocrine therapy.   • In this work, we presented the synthesis and investigation of binding properties of the new morpholine containing 3-amido-9-ethylcarbazole derivative (CMR) to calf thymus DNA (ctDNA) and human serum albumin (HSA) by fluorescence spectroscopy, UV absorption spectroscopy and molecular docking method. A decrease in Stern-Volmer constants was obtained with increase in temperature; it shows that static quenching mechanism leads to formation of new CMR-DNA/HSA complexes, which have hydrophobic interaction as the predominant role in the binding modes. Also, binding properties of DNA were investigated with competition assays on two probes (EB and H33258) by absorption, ionic strength and iodide ion quenching methods. The results suggested that CMR entered into the minor groove binding on the A-T region of DNA. The spectral data further confirmed by molecular docking which elicited that CMR complexes have similar interaction and conformation trends to each target, DNA and HSA. An investigation was needed into extant research-based knowledge about factors influencing EOL care decisions among MAs to guide health-care professionals in assisting MAs to make timely, acceptable, and satisfactory EOL care decisions. To determine whether gender was an influence on EOL decision-making among older MAs, CINAHL and PubMed were searched for articles published between 1994 and 2018. Relevant sources were also identified through the reference lists of review articles. Reports were included if they were written in English, involved participants aged 50 years and older who identified themselves as MA, and data derived directly from participants. Reports in which MAs were not equally represented in the sample, large databases, and instrumentation development and testing articles were excluded. Of the 345 unduplicated articles identified in our electronic search and the 47 identified through review articles, 22 met the inclusion criteria. Content analysis was conducted using a priori codes from the Ethno-Cultural Gerontological Nursing Model (ECGNM). Only 8 (36%) of the 22 articles reported on MA older adults' gendered experiences related to EOL decision-making. Results indicate an association between gender and EOL decision-making. As the older MA population grows, tackling disparities in EOL services use requires attention to how culture and gender influence EOL decision-making and care.Background To date, little attention has been paid to the processes by which resilience is developed, and how the likelihood of a resilient outcome may be enhanced over the life course. Salivary cortisol was taken pre stressor 2, immediately post stressor 2, and at 10 min intervals until 30 min. Results The intervention was associated with greater reductions in negative affect, than a disengagement control task, and prevented the continued reduction in positive affect observed in the disengagement control condition. Moreover, the intervention promoted a steeper cortisol recovery trajectory, than the control condition for those with higher pre-stressor cortisol. Analysis revealed that there was no major position shifting of the core β-sheet region within the catalytic site of SRPK1 when present in the state of ASF/SF2 bound in comparison to apo form. Global motions of SRPK1 indicated that major stable structural changes occurred after the substrate binding. The interactions between SRPK1 and ASF/SF2 were examined and calculated during molecular dynamics simulation of 1 µs. Molecular dynamics study indicated Arg84, Lys85, Leu86, Lys174, Tyr227 and Leu479 residues of SRPK1 as essential hot spots involved in the stable binding with substrate. RESULTS In total, 177 ears were identified with 39 translocations (22%). Median AID was 443° (interquartile range [IQR], 367°-550°). Audiologic outcomes (126 ears) showed a small, significant correlation between consonant-nucleus-consonant (CNC) word score and AID (r = 0.20, P = .027), although correlation was insignificant if translocation occurred (r = 0.11, P = .553). Disrupted microbiome has been associated with negative health outcomes and especially could promote the onset of enteric infections. To sustain their growth and persistence within the human digestive tract, gut microbes and enteric pathogens rely on two main polysaccharide compartments, namely dietary fibers and mucus carbohydrates. Several evidences suggest that the three-way relationship between gut microbiota, dietary fibers and mucus layer could unravel the capacity of enteric pathogens to colonise the human digestive tract and ultimately lead to infection. The review starts by shedding light on similarities and differences between dietary fibers and mucus carbohydrates structures and functions. Next, we provide an overview of the interactions of these two components with the third partner, namely, the gut microbiota, under health and disease situations. The review will then provide insights into the relevance of using dietary fibers interventions to prevent enteric infections with a focus on gut microbial imbalance and impaired-mucus integrity. Facing the numerous challenges in studying microbiota-pathogen-dietary fiber-mucus interactions, we lastly describe the characteristics and potentialities of currently available in vitro models of the human gut.
    Bicuspid aortic valve (BAV) may be complicated by aortic aneurysms and dissection. This study aimed to evaluate the prognostic efficacy of markers from cardiac imaging, as well as genetic and new biomarkers, to early predict aortic complications.

    We re-evaluated after a mean time of 48 ± 11 months 47 BAV patients who had undergone previous echocardiography for evaluation of aortic stiffness and 2D aortic longitudinal strain (LS) (by speckle-tracking analysis), and who had given a blood sample for the assessment of a single-nucleotide polymorphism of elastin gene (ELN rs2 071307) and quantification of elastin soluble fragments (ESF). Surgical treatment of aortic aneurysm/dissection was the primary endpoint, and an aortic dimension increase (of one or more aortic segments) ≥1 mm/year was the secondary endpoint. Nine patients underwent surgical treatment of ascending aorta (AA) aneurysms. Out of the 38 patients who did not need surgical intervention, 16 showed an increase of aortic root and/or AA dimension ≥1 mm/year. At multivariate Cox regression analysis, an impaired AA LS was an independent predictor of aortic surgery [P = 0.04; hazard ratio (HR) 0.961; 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.924-0.984] and aortic dilatation (P = 0.007; HR 0.960; 95% CI 0.932-0.989). An increased quantity of ESF was correlated (P = 0.015) with the primary endpoint at univariate Cox regression analysis but it did not keep statistical significance at multivariate analysis.

We hypothesized that an echocardiographic ratio of this mismatch [RV systolic function by tricuspid annular plane systolic excursion (TAPSE) divided by pulmonary arterial systolic pressure (PASP)] would predict adverse outcomes better than each measurement individually, and would be useful for risk stratification in intermediate-risk PE.

All echocardiograms were analysed by an observer blinded to the outcome. The primary endpoint was a 7-day composite outcome of death or haemodynamic deterioration. Secondary outcomes were 7- and 30-day all-cause mortality. A total of 627 patients were included; 135 met the primary composite outcome.
