  • Three culture media were studied for red pigment production by Monascus ruber in submerged cultivation rice flour (20 g L-1), sugarcane molasses (30 g L-1), and, finally, molasses + rice flour (10 g L-1+10 g L-1); all culture media were added of 5 g L-1 glycine as nitrogen source. Rice flour showed pigment production of 7.05 UA510nm and molasses 5.08 UA510nm, and the mixture of rice flour and molasses showed the best result of 16.38 UA510nm. Molasses culture presented good results for cell biomass production of 11.09 g L-1. With these results, it was observed that one substrate presented good pigment production (rice flour) and another attained better results for cell biomass growth (molasses), and a third medium containing 10 g L-1 of rice flour + 10 g L-1 of molasses was formulated. The results for this mixture showed satisfactory results, with global pigment productivity of 0.097 UA510nm h-1 and maximum productivity rate of 0.17 UA510nm h-1.     We present a series of three women who developed EMV after early pregnancy loss and a control case of incomplete abortion, where colour Doppler ultrasound was used to distinguish retained products of conception from features of EMV. Clinical status and imaging findings, including peak systolic velocity (PSV), were used for the initial risk stratification of the patients. All cases with EMV/AVM were managed expectantly with serial ultrasound imaging and trending human chorionic gonadotropin levels. The patient with retained products of conception was managed by hysteroscopy and curettage.

    In all cases, presentation was suggestive of incomplete abortion with retained products of conception. However, colour Doppler ultrasound demd appropriate use of ultrasound imaging with colour Doppler, including PSV measurement, can assist in recognition of EMV/AVM. Expectant management with serial ultrasound evaluation is a safe treatment option for EMV/AVM with low PSV and can minimise complications such as need for blood transfusion, uterine artery embolization, and hysterectomy.
    The National Cancer Institute has supported cancer survivorship science for many years, yet few funded studies have examined the needs of individuals living with cancer that is advanced or has metastasized. This report analyzes currently active National Institutes of Health (NIH) grants focused on survivorship for patients living with advanced or metastatic cancers to identify emerging research topics in this population and gaps in current science.

    A search of all NIH research grants that received funding in Fiscal Year 2020 focused on this population was conducted, excluding grants with a primary focus on end-of-life care, tumor progression or staging and grants for which the only outcome was survival.

    A total of 25 active grants met the inclusion criteria. Most were funded using the R01 grant mechanism and included a range of cancer types and topics such as palliative/supportive care, psychosocial support, health services, and symptom sequelae.

    Although currently funded grants focus on several important topics, gaps in the portfolio remain.
    Three culture media were studied for red pigment production by Monascus ruber in submerged cultivation rice flour (20 g L-1), sugarcane molasses (30 g L-1), and, finally, molasses + rice flour (10 g L-1+10 g L-1); all culture media were added of 5 g L-1 glycine as nitrogen source. Rice flour showed pigment production of 7.05 UA510nm and molasses 5.08 UA510nm, and the mixture of rice flour and molasses showed the best result of 16.38 UA510nm. Molasses culture presented good results for cell biomass production of 11.09 g L-1. With these results, it was observed that one substrate presented good pigment production (rice flour) and another attained better results for cell biomass growth (molasses), and a third medium containing 10 g L-1 of rice flour + 10 g L-1 of molasses was formulated. The results for this mixture showed satisfactory results, with global pigment productivity of 0.097 UA510nm h-1 and maximum productivity rate of 0.17 UA510nm h-1.   • A 63-year-old man was admitted for acute left heart failure after doing farm work. He rapidly developed refractory cardiogenic shock due to a large left atrial myxoma which was found by bedside echocardiography. Venoarteriovenous extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) was performed immediately, and the patient was transferred for further surgery with a good outcome. Therefore, timely echocardiographic evaluation and surgical removal of myxomas is recommended, and ECMO could be used as a bridge between the transfer and perioperative period.
    Acute type A aortic dissection (ATAAD) has a high risk of perioperative bleeding and often requires extensive blood product infusions. Analysis of the changes in coagulation and fibrinolysis is both helpful for proper treatment and an improved prognosis. The present study investigated the changes in the coagulation and fibrinolysis systems during the perioperative period of ATAAD.

    Twenty-two patients with ATAAD were included in this study. After diagnosis, all patients underwent ascending aorta replacement, aortic arch replacement, and implantation of a special stented endovascular graft. The control group included 25 patients undergoing elective aortic surgery. Baseline preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative data were collected in both groups. Venous blood samples of all subjects were collected at five time points, after admission (T1), before surgery (T2), after protamine reversal (T3), postoperative 6 h (T4), and postoperative 24 h (T5), measuring the concentrations of platelet factor 4 (PF4),n at T1 (P < 0.05).

    The changes in coagulation and fibrinolysis in the ATAAD group before surgery were very significant, which caused a large amount of fibrinogen and platelet consumption. Cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) and a lower intraoperative core temperature exacerbated the coagulation and fibrinolysis disorder, and the pro-coagulant function of the platelets was activated after surgery. Maintaining the normal concentration of fibrinogen was helpful to correct the coagulation function disorder.

    Patients were divided into 2 groups based on whether they received music therapy a control group and a music group. The music group received 30 minutes of music therapy every day for 6 months after surgery. Patients in the control group received standard treatment and had 30 minutes of quiet time every day for 6 months after surgery. The short-form McGill pain questionnaire (SF-MPQ), the SF-36 scale and the Karolinska Sleep Questionnaire (KSQ) was used as the evaluation tool for chronic pain, quality of life, and quality of sleep, respectively.

    In terms of the degree of postoperative chronic pain, the Pain Rating Index (PRI) emotion item score in the SF-MPQ evaluation of the music group was significantly lower than that of the control group (1.6 ± 1.1 versus 2.2 ± 0.9). The role emotional (RE) scores of the SF-36 in the music group were significantly higher than that in the control group (77.35 ± 18.55 versus 42.66 ± 22.63). KSQ scores were significantly higher in the music group than in the control group for sleep status (4.1 ± 1.0 versus 3.3 ± 0.9), falling asleep (3.9 ± 1.1 versus 3.1 ± 1.0), and not feeling refreshed by sleep (3.6 ± 1.3 versus 2.7 ± 0.9) (P < .05).

  • We aimed to quantify the heterogeneity of atherosclerosis in upper and lower limb vessels using 18F-NaF-PET/CT and compare calcification in coronary arteries to peripheral arteries. 68 healthy controls (42±13.5 years, 35 females, 33 males) and 40 patients at-risk for cardiovascular disease (55±11.9 years, 22 females, 18 males) underwent PET/CT imaging 90 minutes after the injection of 18F-NaF (2.2 Mbq/Kg). The following arteries were examined coronary artery (CA), ascending aorta (AS), arch of aorta (AR), descending aorta (DA), abdominal aorta (AA), common iliac artery (CIA), external iliac artery (EIA), femoral artery (FA), popliteal artery (PA). Average SUVmean (aSUVmean) was calculated for each arterial segment. A paired t-test compared the aSUVmean between CA vs. AS, AR, DA, AA, CIA, EIA, FA, and PA. CA aSUVmean in the at-risk group was higher than the healthy control group (0.74±0.04 vs. 0.67±0.04, P=0.03). Furthermore, the 18F-NaF uptake in the CA was lower than in AS, AR, DA, AA, CIA, EIA, FA, and PA in both healthy (all P≤0.0001) and at-risk (all P≤0.0001). Higher 18F-NaF uptake in non-cardiac arteries in both healthy controls and patients at-risk suggests CA calcification is a late manifestation of atherosclerosis. This differential expression of atherosclerosis is likely due to interaction of hemodynamic parameters specific to the vascular bed and systemic factors related to the development of atherosclerosis.

    Ga small target (8 mm) at standard T/B = 2.4, increasing scan time from 5 to 15 minutes increased SNR from < 1 to 1.6, and did not result in target identification. Increasing T/B from 2.4 to 10.9, however, dramatically increased SNR from < 1 to 22.3. Increased T/B resulted in clear visibility of the 8 mm target, even for 1-minute scans. Ventilation/perfusion single photon emission computed tomography (V/Q SPECT) is the screening test of choice showing mismatch in at least one segment or two sub-segments. Our aim was to investigate the relationship between the extent of pulmonary perfusion defects and hemodynamic, echocardiographic, biological and functional parameters. Between 2012 and 2019, 46 patients with CTEPH were retrospectively enrolled in the study. The diagnosis of pulmonary hypertension was made by the referral team of the expert center according to the European guidelines. All patients underwent pulmonary V/Q SPECT, right heart catheterization, transthoracic echocardiography (TTE), functional tests and natriuretic peptides assays. There was a slight correlation between the extent of pulmonary perfusion defects and pulmonary vascular resistances (R=0.510, P less then 0.001). However, there was no correlation between the extent of pulmonary perfusion defects and NYHA stage, NT-proBNP level, functional parameters (6 minutes-walk distance-6 MWD), right ventricular function assessed by TTE. After controlling the effect of age, disease duration and education, lower scores in Rey's Auditory-Verbal Learning Test (RAVLT)/immediate recall were significantly related with lower uptake values in the less affected striatum and more affected caudate. Lower scores in RAVLT/short-term recall were also significantly associated with lower uptake values in the more affected caudate and reduced performance in Trail Making Test part B was related with reduced DAT values in the less affected anterior putamen. Our findings suggest that reduced DAT availability in both caudate and putamen is related to reduced performances in some memory and attention/executive tasks. The following arteries were examined coronary artery (CA), ascending aorta (AS), arch of aorta (AR), descending aorta (DA), abdominal aorta (AA), common iliac artery (CIA), external iliac artery (EIA), femoral artery (FA), popliteal artery (PA). Average SUVmean (aSUVmean) was calculated for each arterial segment. A paired t-test compared the aSUVmean between CA vs. AS, AR, DA, AA, CIA, EIA, FA, and PA. CA aSUVmean in the at-risk group was higher than the healthy control group (0.74±0.04 vs. 0.67±0.04, P=0.03). Furthermore, the 18F-NaF uptake in the CA was lower than in AS, AR, DA, AA, CIA, EIA, FA, and PA in both healthy (all P≤0.0001) and at-risk (all P≤0.0001). Higher 18F-NaF uptake in non-cardiac arteries in both healthy controls and patients at-risk suggests CA calcification is a late manifestation of atherosclerosis. This differential expression of atherosclerosis is likely due to interaction of hemodynamic parameters specific to the vascular bed and systemic factors related to the development of atherosclerosis. Ga DOTATATE PET/CT protocols are similar to F FDG protocols despite differences in physical properties, biodistribution, and tumor uptake. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the impact of scan time (counts), and target activity on signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) in various sized targets, or lesions. To evaluate this, phantom experiments and analysis of clinical Ga DOTATATE PET/CT studies were performed. Ga was first compared to F in phantom studies to evaluate recovery coefficients and SNR. Ga phantom studies were also acquired in list mode, and at varying target activities to evaluate the effects of acquisition time and high target concentrations on SNR in clinically relevant small (8 mm) and larger targets (≥ 12 mm). Clinical studies (n = 50) were analyzed to determine if phantom target concentrations and SNR are present in clinical Ga DOTATATE studies at similarly very high tumor activity concentrations (n = 159). In phantoms, recovery coefficient and SUV for Ga were ~87% of F. SNR for Ga was ~65% of F. For the Ga small target (8 mm) at standard T/B = 2.4, increasing scan time from 5 to 15 minutes increased SNR from < 1 to 1.6, and did not result in target identification. Increasing T/B from 2.4 to 10.9, however, dramatically increased SNR from < 1 to 22.3. Increased T/B resulted in clear visibility of the 8 mm target, even for 1-minute scans. In patients, high hepatic tumor SUV (27.3±29.6), resulted in high SNR (12.5±9.8). For extrahepatic tumors, high SUV (41.6±42.8), resulted in high SNR (43.8±49.9). Very high target or T/B, even in small targets, can offset the physical limitations of Ga. High target uptake and high T/B are primary factors influencing small lesion detectability. High target uptake and high T/B are primary factors influencing small lesion detectability.Chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension (CTEPH) is a major cause of chronic pulmonary hypertension leading to right heart failure and death. Ventilation/perfusion single photon emission computed tomography (V/Q SPECT) is the screening test of choice showing mismatch in at least one segment or two sub-segments. Our aim was to investigate the relationship between the extent of pulmonary perfusion defects and hemodynamic, echocardiographic, biological and functional parameters. Between 2012 and 2019, 46 patients with CTEPH were retrospectively enrolled in the study. The diagnosis of pulmonary hypertension was made by the referral team of the expert center according to the European guidelines. All patients underwent pulmonary V/Q SPECT, right heart catheterization, transthoracic echocardiography (TTE), functional tests and natriuretic peptides assays. There was a slight correlation between the extent of pulmonary perfusion defects and pulmonary vascular resistances (R=0.510, P less then 0.001). However, there was no correlation between the extent of pulmonary perfusion defects and NYHA stage, NT-proBNP level, functional parameters (6 minutes-walk distance-6 MWD), right ventricular function assessed by TTE. Pulmonary perfusion defects extension by V/Q lung SPECT are correlated with pulmonary vascular resistances in CTEPH. However, it is not correlated with right ventricular function and functional parameters.Parkinson's disease (PD) is clinically characterized by motor symptoms, however, specific cognitive impairments are common and poorly understood. This study was designed to assess whether cognitive performances are related to dopamine active transporter (DAT) availability in non-demented PD subjects. Fifty-four non-demented PD patients were enrolled. They underwent [99mTc] TRODAT-1 SPECT/CT and a comprehensive neuropsychological battery including attention/executive and memory tests. Multiple linear regression controlling the effect of age, disease duration and education was applied. The significance level was set at P values of less then 0.02. After controlling the effect of age, disease duration and education, lower scores in Rey's Auditory-Verbal Learning Test (RAVLT)/immediate recall were significantly related with lower uptake values in the less affected striatum and more affected caudate. Lower scores in RAVLT/short-term recall were also significantly associated with lower uptake values in the more affected caudate and reduced performance in Trail Making Test part B was related with reduced DAT values in the less affected anterior putamen. Our findings suggest that reduced DAT availability in both caudate and putamen is related to reduced performances in some memory and attention/executive tasks. Prep-02/JSAP-05 trial which is an RCT of upfront surgery versus neoadjuvant chemotherapy using GEM and S-1 (GS) and subsequent surgery for R-PDAC in Japan indicated neoadjuvant chemotherapy had a longer overall survival (OS) than those undergoing upfront surgery (36.7M vs. 26.6M, p = 0.015). In a retrospective multicenter study in Japan reported that in BR-PDAC, median survival time (MST) in the pretreatment group was significantly better than that in the upfront surgery group (25.7 months vs. 19.0 months, p = 0.015) according to a propensity score matching analysis. Another retrospective multicenter study with UR-LA PDAC in Japan reported that conversion surgery was more beneficial for patients with more than 8 months of preoperative therapy than those with less than 8 months of that therapy. Various clinical trials on pancreatic cancer are ongoing, and the results of trials on chemotherapeutic regimens and multidisciplinary treatments will be of further interest.During the COVID-19 pandemic, frontline nurses have faced extraordinary personal and professional challenges. These challenges have had mental health consequences, and concerning reports of burnout have emerged globally. We conducted a cross-sectional survey at a designated COVID-19 hospital in Shanghai at the peak of the pandemic, i.e. about 2 months after the onset of the outbreak from February to April 2020. Findings revealed burnout in 6.85% of nurses. Of 336 respondents, 87 (25.89%) had a high level of emotional exhaustion, 61 (18.15%) had a high level of depersonalization, and 100 (29.76%) had a low level of personal accomplishment. Burnout can be prevented by offering more support from families and supervisors, paying attention to health monitoring and personal protection, and creating a rational human resource allocation and shift management system. Specific training on infection control and self-protection, mental health guidance, and stress coping techniques must be implemented. As the current health crisis ultimately abates, moving the focus from mental health issues to public health issues, more attention and support at the national and organizational levels are needed to reduce occupational discrimination, nurse autonomy and status need to be promoted, and public health emergency teams need to be created. A positive and fair working environment is essential to effective healthcare delivery.As the COVID-19 epidemic is still ongoing, a more rapid detection of SARS-CoV-2 infection such as viral antigen-detection needs to be evaluated for early diagnosis of COVID-19 disease. Here, we report the dynamic changes of SARS-CoV-2 viral antigens in nasopharyngeal swabs of COVID-19 patients and its association with the viral nucleic acid clearance and clinical outcomes. Eighty-five COVID-19 patients were enrolled for detection of SARS-CoV-2 viral antigens, including 57 anti-SARS-CoV-2 antibody negative cases and 28 antibody positive cases. The viral antigen could be detected in 52.63% (30/57) patients with SARS-CoV-2 antibody negative at the early stage of SARS-CoV-2 infection, especially in the first 5 days after disease onset (p = 0.0018) and disappeared in about 8 days after disease onset. Viral antigens were highly detectable in patients with low Ct value (less than 30) of SARS-CoV-2 nucleic acid RT-PCT assay, suggesting the expression of viral antigen was associated with high viral load. Furthermore, positive antigen detection indicated disease progression, nine cases with positive antigen (9/30, 30.0%), in contrast to two cases (2/27, 7.40%) (p = 0.0444) with negative antigen, which progressed into severe disease. Thus, the viral antigens were persistent in early stages of infection when virus was in highly replicating status, and viral antigen detection promises to rapidly screen positive patients in the early stage of SARS-CoV-2 infection.

We then used a plasmid-based assay, in which RR is triggered by a single blocking lesion present on a plasmid molecule, to establish that while HR requires topB, ruvC or rusA, RAMER is independent of these genes and, as expected, requires a functional UvrABC excinuclease. Surprisingly, analysis of the RR events in a strain devoid of HJ resolvases reveals that the UvrABC dependent repair of the single lesion present on the plasmid molecule can generate an excision track potentially extending to dozens of nucleotides.The nano-carbon graphene has unique structural and physicochemical properties, which are conducive to various biomedical applications. We assessed the effect of graphene oxide (GO) on tomato plants at the seedling and mature stages in terms of morphological and biochemical indices. GO treatment significantly improved the shoot/stem growth of tomato in a dose-dependent manner by increasing the cortical cells number, cross-sectional area, diameter and vascular-column area. In addition, GO also promoted the morphological development of the root system and increased biomass accumulation. The surface area of root tips and hairs of tomato plants treated with 50 mg/L and 100 mg/L GO were significantly greater compared to the untreated control. At the molecular level, GO induced the expression of root development-related genes (SlExt1 and LeCTR1) and inhibited the auxin-responsive gene (SlIAA3). However, 50 mg/L and 100 mg/L GO significantly increased the root auxin content, which in turn increased the number of fruits and hastened fruit ripening compared to the control plants. Taken together, GO can improve the tomato growth when used at the appropriate concentration, and is a promising nano-carbon material for agricultural use.Calcineurin-B-like proteins (CBLs) are essential components of the calcium signaling network and act during plant's response to stress and normal conditions. A combined research strategy of in-silico analysis and gene silencing experiment was employed to investigate the role of different classes of CBLs in tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.) during the response to drought stress. Two different classes of CBL genes, including SlCBL3-1, and SlCBL3-2, with the minimum and a maximum number of drought-responsive cis-elements, were selected and were targeted for transient gene silencing in tomato followed by the drought treatment. The effect of silencing events was evaluated by determining of further growth and physiological traits in plants under both control and drought stress conditions. The results showed that silencing of SlCBL3-1 significantly reduced shoot and root growth, relative water content (RWC), and the concentration of pigments while increased free radical accumulation, lipid peroxidation, and leakage from the cells. On the other hand, no antioxidant enzyme activity or proline induction was triggered in plants after SlCBL3-1 silencing. Some of these adverse events were more significantly enhanced when the silenced plants were exposed to drought stress. Overall, a significant role for SlCBL3-1 in the life cycle of plant suggested under both normal and stress conditions. The SlCBL3-2 silencing showed more efficient plants recovery from silencing or drought stress conditions. Therefore, SlCBL3-2 gene may act as a negative regulator under stress conditions. The results might provide new theoretical insight and genetic resources for developing resistant crops against environmental stresses.Plants with the crassulacean acid metabolism commonly present good adaptation to arid and semi-arid environments, but it highly depends on the type of species. In this study, chlorophyll fluorescence, the concentration of inorganic and organic solutes and the productive performance were evaluated along with their relationships in different clones of the genera Opuntia and Nopalea. The experiment was conducted from 2016 to 2018. Four clones of genus Opuntia were evaluated 'Orelha de Elefante Mexicana' (OEM), 'Orelha de Elefante Africana' (OEA), V19 and F8; and two clones of genus Nopalea 'IPA Sertânia' and 'Miúda'. The experiment was arranged in a randomised block design, with six treatments and three replications. The following parameters were measured when harvesting initial, maximum and variable fluorescence; the quantum yield of PSII (Fv/Fm); light-induction curves of the photochemical parameters (ΔF/Fm', qP, NPQ and ETR); the chlorophyll and carotenoid content; carbohydrates; the sodium (Na+) and potassium (K+) content; morphometry; and dry matter accumulation. The values for the effective quantum yield of PSII (ΔF/Fm') and the alterations in photochemical quenching were higher in the OEM clone (P less then 0.05). There was a difference between clones for non-photochemical quenching, with the F8 clone having the highest values. The Fv/Fm was 0.87 for the OEM. 'IPA Sertânia' obtained the greatest Chl a/b, and the highest values for carbohydrate concentration were found in the OEA clone. The OEM clone showed the greatest accumulation of K+, in addition to a higher cladode area index and greater dry matter accumulation. The results showed that silencing of SlCBL3-1 significantly reduced shoot and root growth, relative water content (RWC), and the concentration of pigments while increased free radical accumulation, lipid peroxidation, and leakage from the cells. Four clones of genus Opuntia were evaluated 'Orelha de Elefante Mexicana' (OEM), 'Orelha de Elefante Africana' (OEA), V19 and F8; and two clones of genus Nopalea 'IPA Sertânia' and 'Miúda'. The experiment was arranged in a randomised block design, with six treatments and three replications. The following parameters were measured when harvesting initial, maximum and variable fluorescence; the quantum yield of PSII (Fv/Fm); light-induction curves of the photochemical parameters (ΔF/Fm', qP, NPQ and ETR); the chlorophyll and carotenoid content; carbohydrates; the sodium (Na+) and potassium (K+) content; morphometry; and dry matter accumulation. The values for the effective quantum yield of PSII (ΔF/Fm') and the alterations in photochemical quenching were higher in the OEM clone (P less then 0.05). There was a difference between clones for non-photochemical quenching, with the F8 clone having the highest values. The Fv/Fm was 0.87 for the OEM. 'IPA Sertânia' obtained the greatest Chl a/b, and the highest values for carbohydrate concentration were found in the OEA clone. The OEM clone showed the greatest accumulation of K+, in addition to a higher cladode area index and greater dry matter accumulation.     We screened 13 050 blood donors for HEV using HEV-RNA screening of 10 mini-pools using RealStar HEV RT-PCR Kit (95% limit of detection (LOD) 4.7IU/ml). Furthermore, all HEV-RNA-positive donors were investigated for the presence of IgM/IgG antibody along with liver function tests.

    Of the 13 050 blood donations, 7 (0.53%) were found to be HEV-RNA positive, and the prevalence of HEV nucleic acid testing yield cases among blood donors was 1 in 1864. All seven HEV-RNA-positive samples were tested with anti-HEV IgM and anti-HEV IgG antibodies; this resulted in two (28.5%) positive anti-HEV IgM and two (28.5%) positive anti-HEV IgG antibodies. Hepatic activity was measured, with two of seven HEV-RNA-positive donors demonstrating abnormal serum glutategory for HEV infection.

    Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) has been used as a refractory treatment for acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) due to coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), but there has been little evidence of its efficacy. We conducted this study to share our experience using ECMO as a bridge to recovery for ARDS due to COVID-19.

    All adult patients who were placed on ECMO for ARDS due to COVID-19 between April 2020 and June 2020 (during the first wave of COVID-19) were identified. The clinical characteristics and outcomes of these patients were analyzed with a specific focus on the differences between patients who survived to hospital discharge and those who did not.

    In total, 20 COVID-19 patients were included in this study. All patients were placed on veno-veno ECMO. Comparing survivors and non-survivors, older age was found to be associated with hospital mortality (p = .02). The following complications were observed renal failure requiring renal replacement therapy (35%, n = 7), bacteremia during ECMO (20%, n = 4), coinfection with bacterial pneumonia (15%, n = 3), cannula site bleeding (15%, n = 3), stroke (10%, n = 2), gastrointestinal bleeding (10%, n = 2), and liver failure (5%, n = 1).

  • The semiterrestrial isopod, Ligia exotica represents one of the oldest documented species introductions of marine organisms and is known as an intermediate form between marine and strictly terrestrial isopods. In order to explore the potential value of Ligia as an animal food source, this study focused on the growth rate under laboratory rearing conditions and conducted a detailed analysis of the overall nutrient content of the species in comparison to two other marine food media (krill and fish meal). Evaluation of the growth rate of juveniles suggests it is a relatively fast-growing species of the Ligiidae family. The essential amino acids content Ligia meal is the lowest amongst the three studied media but the proportion of flavor amino acids, and in particular taurine, was higher. The most restricted amino acids of isopod meal are methionine and cysteine. The significantly unbalanced amino acid composition of Ligia meal may affect the absorption and utilization by consumers. In terms of fatty acids, the total polyunsaturated fatty acids in the isopod is very low. A total of 12 vitamins were examined. The VK1, VE, VB2, VB3, VB5 content of isopod meal were significantly higher than those of krill meal and fish meal. Similarly, most of the 11 mineral elements are highest in the isopod meal. Ligia therefore offers potential as an alternative natural food source in animal given the growth rate under culture and the overall nutrient content. But Ligia collected in most of the field would be deemed unfit for human consumption because of the relatively low nutritional value and heavy metal content exceeding the provided standard. Further study is warranted to elucidate the biological characteristics of isopods and how its diet is reflected in its nutritional value to consumers.The overexpression of hoxd13a during zebrafish fin development causes distal endochondral expansion and simultaneous reduction of the finfold, mimicking the major events thought to have happened during the fin-to-limb transition in Vertebrates. We investigated the effect of hoxd13a overexpression on putative downstream targets and found it to cause downregulation of proximal fin identity markers (meis1 and emx2) and upregulation of genes involved in skeletogenesis/patterning (fbn1, dacha) and AER/Finfold maintenance (bmps). We then show that bmp2b overexpression leads to finfold reduction, recapitulating the phenotype observed in hoxd13a-overexpressing fins. In addition, we show that during the development of the long finfold in leot1/lofdt1 mutants, hoxd13a and bmp2b are downregulated. Our results suggest that modulation of the transcription factor Hoxd13 during evolution may have been involved in finfold reduction through regulation of the Bmp signalling that then activated apoptotic mechanisms impairing finfold elongation.We proposed a novel interaction potential landscape approach to map the systems-level profile changes of gene networks during replicative aging in Saccharomyces cerevisiae. This approach enabled us to apply quasi-potentials, the negative logarithm of the probabilities, to calibrate the elevation of the interaction landscapes with young cells as a reference state. Using inertial measurement units, we quantified head movements in patients as they transitioned through these two vestibular states characterized by different levels of peripheral damage. Comparison with age-matched healthy control subjects revealed that the same kinematic measurements were significantly abnormal in patients both pre- and post-surgery. Comparison with age-matched healthy control subjects revealed that the same kinematic measurements were significantly abnormal in patients both pre- and post-surgery. Regardless of direction, patients took a longer time to move their heads during the exercises.
