  • Together with the unique expression patterns of KLF4 and DPYSL2 limited to the differentiated monocytes in the hematopoietic system both in human and mouse, the identified KLF4-DPYSL2 axis in leukemia cells may serve as a potential therapeutic target for the development of novel differentiation therapies for patients with AML.Precipitation use efficiency (PUE) is crucial in understanding the coupling between ecosystem carbon and water cycling. Median age 67 years (33-79). According to IPSS-R, 71 cases were low or intermediate risk. Flow variables significant in the univariate Cox analysis "%monocytes/TNCs", "% CD16+ monocytes/TNCs", "total alterations in monocytes", "% myeloid CD34+ cells", "number of abnormal expressions in myeloblasts" and "% of B-cell progenitors". In the multivariate model remained independent "% myeloid CD34+ cells", B-cell progenitors" and "% CD16+ monocytes/TNCs". These variables were categorized by the extreme quartile risk ratio strategy in order to build the score % myeloid CD34+ cells" (≥ 2.0% = 1 point), B-cell progenitors" ( less then  0.05% 1 point) and "CD16+ monocytes/TNCs" (≥ 1.0% 1 point). This score could separate patients with a different survival. There was a weak correlation between the score and IPSS-R. This difference was more pronounced in lavender. The root AMF diversity was influenced by the plant health status solely in lavender and only under the conventional practice resulting in an increase in the AMF abundance and richness. The plant health status did not influence the distribution of root AMF communities in lavandin unlike its strong impact in lavender in both agricultural practices. Finally, among the most abundant molecular operational taxonomic units (MOTUs), four different MOTUs for each plant species were significantly abundant in the roots of healthy lavender and lavandin in either agricultural practice. Our study demonstrated that the plant health status influences root colonization and can influence the diversity and distribution of root AMF communities. Its effects vary according to plant species, can be modified by agricultural practices and allow plants to establish symbiosis with specific AMF species.

  • Paragangliomas in the posterior mediastinum are very rare, but more than half of all cases are functional. The associated symptoms are curable with complete resection, and long-term follow-up for recurrence is important.
    The oncogenic role of the newly identified lncRNA LUADT1 has been revealed in lung adenocarcinoma. It was reported that LUADT1 plays a critical role in multiple human diseases. This study was carried out to investigate the role of LUADT1 in sepsis.

    Sixty patients with sepsis and sixty healthy volunteers were recruited for this study. Plasma samples were collected from all participants. Human primary coronary artery endothelial cells were also used in this study. The expression of Pim-1, miR-195 and LUADT1 were detected by RT-qPCR. The interaction between miR-195 and LUADT1 was determined by overexpression experiments and luciferase activity assay. Cell apoptosis was detected by flow cytometry. The expression of apoptosis-related protein was detected by Western blotting.

    Bioinformatics analysis revealed the potential interaction between LUADT1 and miR-195, which was confirmed by dual luciferase reporter assay. LUADT1 was downregulated in patients with sepsis. Moreover, LPS treatment downregulated the expression of LUADT1 in primary cardiac endothelial cells. Overexpression of LUADT1 and miR-195 did not affect the expression of each other in primary cardiac endothelial cells. Interestingly, overexpression of LUADT1 was found to upregulate the expression of Pim-1, a target of miR-195. In addition, it was found that overexpression of LUADT1 and Pim-1 reduced the enhancement effects of miR-195 on LPS-induced cardiac endothelial cell apoptosis.

    In summary, LUADT1 may protect cardiac endothelial cells against apoptosis in sepsis by regulating the miR-195/Pim-1 axis.

    Tuberous Sclerosis Complex (TSC) is a complex and heterogeneous genetic disease that has well-established clinical diagnostic criteria. These criteria do not include gastrointestinal tumors.

    We report a 45-year-old patient with a clinical and molecular diagnosis of TSC and a family history of cancer, presenting two rare associated findings gastrointestinal polyposis and pancreatic neuroendocrine tumor. This patient was subjected to a genetic test with 80 cancer predisposing genes. The genetic panel revealed the presence of a large pathogenic deletion in the TSC2 gene, covering exons 2 to 16 and including the initiation codon. No changes were identified in the colorectal cancer and colorectal polyposis genes.

    Arachnids are important components of cave ecosystems and display many examples of troglomorphisms, such as blindness, depigmentation, and elongate appendages. Little is known about how the eyes of arachnids are specified genetically, let alone the mechanisms for eye reduction and loss in troglomorphic arachnids. Additionally, duplication of Retinal Determination Gene Network (RDGN) homologs in spiders has convoluted functional inferences extrapolated from single-copy homologs in pancrustacean models.

    We investigated a sister species pair of Israeli cave whip spiders, Charinus ioanniticus and C. israelensis (Arachnopulmonata, Amblypygi), of which one species has reduced eyes. We generated embryonic transcriptomes for bothAmblypygispecies, and discovered that several RDGN homologs exhibit duplications. We show that duplication of RDGN homologs is systemic across arachnopulmonates (arachnid orders that bear book lungs), rather than being a spider-specific phenomenon. A differential gene expression (DGE) anaics of troglomorphic adaptations in cave arachnids, and links differential gene expression to an arthropod eye phenotype for the first time outside of Pancrustacea. https://www.selleckchem.com/products/Y-27632.html Our results support the conservation of at least one RDGN component across Arthropoda and provide a framework for identifying the role of gene duplications in generating arachnid eye diversity.
    Intrahepatic cholestasis of pregnancy (ICP) is a liver disorder that specifically occurs in pregnancy. Elevated levels of liver transaminases aspartate aminotransferase, alanine aminotransferase and serum bilirubin levels are common biochemical characteristics in ICP. The disorder is associated with an increased risk of premature delivery and stillbirth. The characterization of the potential microbiota in ICP could go a long way in the prevention and treatment of this pregnancy disease.

    A total of 58 patients were recruited for our study 27 ICP patients and 31 healthy pregnant subjects with no ICP. The V3 and V4 regions of the 16S rDNA collected from fecal samples of both diseased and control groups were amplified. 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing was then performed on gut microbiota. Sequencing data were analyzed and the correlation between components of microbiota and patient ICP status was found. Related metabolic pathways, relative abundance and significantly different operational taxonomic units (OTe increased rare bacteria at different phylogenetic levels. Our results also illustrated that all 638 KEGG Orthologs and 136 in 138 KEGG pathways were less abundant in ICP patients compared to the controls.

    To characterise patients with refractory SLE receiving rituximab biosimilar (CT-P10) and to explore short-term efficacy and safety associated with rituximab biosimilar use.

    We retrospectively analysed data from the medical records of patients with refractory SLE who received CT-P10 in Ramathibodi Hospital, Mahidol University, Thailand. Baseline characteristics, disease activity (modified Systemic Lupus Erythematosus Disease Activity Index (SLEDAI)), response to treatment at 6 months after CT-P10 and infection over 6 months were recorded.

    Thirty-two patients with SLE received CT-P10 from April 2018 to June 2019. Of these, 29 (90.6%) were female and the mean±SD age was 36.8±15.2 years. The median (IQR) disease duration was 9.5 (1.3-13.0) years. All patients received glucocorticoid treatment and used 1.7±0.1 immunosuppressive agents at baseline, excluding antimalarial drugs. Baseline Systemic Lupus International Collaborating Clinics Damage Index score was 0.5 (0.0-1.0). Overall response, which was defined as a reduction in the modified SLEDAI score of ≥4, was achieved in 25.0% of patients at 6 months.     We drew sputum samples from a prospectively collected biobank. Patients were included if they had one sputum sample in the 18 months before and after TIP/S. Bacterial 16S rRNA gene profiling was used to characterise the sputum microbiome.

    Forty-one patients met our inclusion criteria and 151 sputum samples were assessed. At baseline, median age was 30.4 years (IQR 24.2-35.2) and forced expiratory volume in 1 (FEV

The non-covalent capture of olive pheromones inside the β-cyclodextrin cavity leads to the reduction of resonant frequency of the cantilevers, whereas an increase in resistance has been found in case of zinc oxide derived MEMS devices. Sensitivity of the MEMS devices towards the olive pheromone was found to be directly correlated with the increasing availability of β-cyclodextrin moieties over the surface of the devices and thus the detection limit of the devices has been achieved to a value as low as 0.297 ppq of the olive pheromone when the devices were functionalized with one of the standardized protocols. Overall, the reversible usability and potential capability of the suitably functionalized MEMS devices to selectively detect the presence of female sex pheromone of olive fruit fly before the onset of pest infestation in an orchard makes the technology quite attractive for viable commercial application.Traditional approaches for nucleic acids detection require prior amplification of target genes, while nanomaterials-aided DNA biosensors are very magnificent but still suffer from the nanomaterial acquirement and limited sensitivity (above picomolar level). The bonded hydroxyl groups with intense density endowed fullerenol to directly recognize and capture ssDNA-AuNPs via the hydrogen bonding interactions (H-bonds), leading to a sharply decreased photocurrent with quenching efficiency up to 85%, which could be attributed to the photo-generated electrons on the conduction band of fullerenol (-4.66 eV) preferentially migrating to the Fermi level of AuNPs (-5.1 eV) rather than the electrode. In the presence of target gene (mutant human p53 gene fragment), the H-bonds between fullerenol and ssDNA were competitively depleted during the base pairing process of complete hybridization between ssDNA and target, making double-stranded DNA-AuNPs (dsDNA-AuNPs) depart so that the photocurrent powerfully recovered. The PB-VANNPs can bind to the surface of Gram-positive bacteria such as Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus), forming complex of PB-VANNPs/S. aureus. After being centrifugated, the suspension solution of PB-VANNPs can stimulate perfluorohexane (PFH) to rapidly release oxygen (O2) under NIR irradiation. Thus, the bacteria can be sensitively detected with portable pressure meter as signal reader, reporting a limit of detection (LOD) of 1.0 CFU mL-1. On the other side, the sediment of PB-VANNPs/S. aureus can be detected via thermal camera, reporting a LOD of 1.0 CFU mL-1. Interestingly, the bacteria can be effectively inactivated with the local temperature elevation during temperature-based detection. The antibacterial efficiency reaches as high as 99.8%.   • Melanotransferrin (MFI2) is a newly identified tumor-associated protein, which consists of two forms of proteins, membrane-bound (mMFI2) and secretory (sMFI2). However, little is known about the expression pattern and their relevance in lung cancer. Here, we found that both two forms of MFI2 are highly expressed in lung cancer. The expression of MFI2 in lung cancer was detected by using the public database and qRT-PCR. Overexpression and knockdown cell lines and recombinant sMFI2 protein were used to study the function of mMFI2 and sMFI2. RNA-seq, protein chip, ChIP assay, Immunoprecipitation, ELISA, and immunofluorescence were used to study the molecular biological mechanism of mMFI2 and sMFI2. We found that mMFI2 promoted the expression of EMT's common marker N-cadherin by downregulating the transcription factor KLI4, which in turn promoted tumor metastasis; sMFI2 could promote the metastasis of autologous tumor cells in an autocrine manner but the mechanism is different from that of mMFI2. In addition, sMFI2 was proved could inhibit the migration of vascular endothelial cells and subsequently enhance angiogenic responses in a paracrine manner. We propose that the expressions and functions of the two forms of MFI2 in lung cancer are relatively independent. Specifically, mMFI2 was a potential lung cancer therapeutic target, while sMFI2 was highly enriched in advanced lung cancer, and could be used as a tumor staging index.Blood-tumor barrier (BTB) presents a major obstacle to brain drug delivery. Therefore, it is urgent to enhance BTB permeability for the treatment of glioma. In this study, we demonstrated that MIAT, ZAK, and phosphorylated NFκB-p65 (p-NFκB-p65) were upregulated, while miR-140-3p was downregulated in glioma-exposed endothelial cells (GECs) of BTB compared with those in endothelial cells cocultured with astrocytes (ECs) of blood-brain barrier (BBB). MIAT inhibited miR-140-3p expression, increased the expression of ZAK, enhanced the ratio of p-NFκB-p65NFκB-p65, and promoted the endothelial leakage of BTB. Our current study revealed that miR-140-3p was complementary to the ZAK 3'untranslated regions (3'-UTR), and luciferase activity of ZAK was inhibited by miR-140-3p in 293T cells. MiR-140-3p silencing resulted in an increase in BTB permeability by targeting ZAK, while overexpression of miR-140-3p had the opposite results in GECs of BTB. Overexpression of ZAK induced an increase in BTB permeability, and this effect was related to ZAK's ability to mediate phosphorylation of NFκB-p65. Conversely, ZAK silencing get opposite results in GECs of BTB. As a molecular sponge of miR-140-3p, MIAT attenuated its negative regulation of the target gene ZAK by adsorbing miR-140-3p. P-NFκB-p65 as a transcription factor negatively regulated the expression of TJ-associated proteins by means of chip assay and luciferase assay. Single or combined application of MIAT and miR-140-3p effectively promoted antitumor drug doxorubicin (Dox) across BTB to induce apoptosis of glioma cells. In summary, MIAT functioned as a miR-140-3p sponge to regulate the expression of its target gene ZAK, which contribution to phosphorylation of NFκB-p65 was associated with an increase in BTB permeability by down-regulating the expression of TJ associated proteins, thereby promoting Dox delivery across BTB. Here we show that given the same budget, the statistical power of cell-type-specific expression quantitative trait loci (eQTL) mapping can be increased through low-coverage per-cell sequencing of more samples rather than high-coverage sequencing of fewer samples. We use simulations starting from one of the largest available real single-cell RNA-Seq data from 120 individuals to also show that multiple experimental designs with different numbers of samples, cells per sample and reads per cell could have similar statistical power, and choosing an appropriate design can yield large cost savings especially when multiplexed workflows are considered. As an important basis for 'reactive' ML, we establish a first-principles database (Rad-6) containing closed and open-shell organic molecules, along with an associated database of chemical reaction energies (Rad-6-RE). We show that the special topology of reaction spaces, with central hub molecules involved in multiple reactions, requires a modification of existing compound space ML-concepts.     Melanotransferrin (MFI2) is a newly identified tumor-associated protein, which consists of two forms of proteins, membrane-bound (mMFI2) and secretory (sMFI2). However, little is known about the expression pattern and their relevance in lung cancer. Here, we found that both two forms of MFI2 are highly expressed in lung cancer. The expression of MFI2 in lung cancer was detected by using the public database and qRT-PCR. Overexpression and knockdown cell lines and recombinant sMFI2 protein were used to study the function of mMFI2 and sMFI2. RNA-seq, protein chip, ChIP assay, Immunoprecipitation, ELISA, and immunofluorescence were used to study the molecular biological mechanism of mMFI2 and sMFI2. We found that mMFI2 promoted the expression of EMT's common marker N-cadherin by downregulating the transcription factor KLI4, which in turn promoted tumor metastasis; sMFI2 could promote the metastasis of autologous tumor cells in an autocrine manner but the mechanism is different from that of mMFI2. In addition, sMFI2 was proved could inhibit the migration of vascular endothelial cells and subsequently enhance angiogenic responses in a paracrine manner. We propose that the expressions and functions of the two forms of MFI2 in lung cancer are relatively independent. Specifically, mMFI2 was a potential lung cancer therapeutic target, while sMFI2 was highly enriched in advanced lung cancer, and could be used as a tumor staging index.Blood-tumor barrier (BTB) presents a major obstacle to brain drug delivery. Therefore, it is urgent to enhance BTB permeability for the treatment of glioma. In this study, we demonstrated that MIAT, ZAK, and phosphorylated NFκB-p65 (p-NFκB-p65) were upregulated, while miR-140-3p was downregulated in glioma-exposed endothelial cells (GECs) of BTB compared with those in endothelial cells cocultured with astrocytes (ECs) of blood-brain barrier (BBB). MIAT inhibited miR-140-3p expression, increased the expression of ZAK, enhanced the ratio of p-NFκB-p65NFκB-p65, and promoted the endothelial leakage of BTB. Our current study revealed that miR-140-3p was complementary to the ZAK 3'untranslated regions (3'-UTR), and luciferase activity of ZAK was inhibited by miR-140-3p in 293T cells. MiR-140-3p silencing resulted in an increase in BTB permeability by targeting ZAK, while overexpression of miR-140-3p had the opposite results in GECs of BTB. Overexpression of ZAK induced an increase in BTB permeability, and this effect was related to ZAK's ability to mediate phosphorylation of NFκB-p65. Conversely, ZAK silencing get opposite results in GECs of BTB. As a molecular sponge of miR-140-3p, MIAT attenuated its negative regulation of the target gene ZAK by adsorbing miR-140-3p. P-NFκB-p65 as a transcription factor negatively regulated the expression of TJ-associated proteins by means of chip assay and luciferase assay. Single or combined application of MIAT and miR-140-3p effectively promoted antitumor drug doxorubicin (Dox) across BTB to induce apoptosis of glioma cells. In summary, MIAT functioned as a miR-140-3p sponge to regulate the expression of its target gene ZAK, which contribution to phosphorylation of NFκB-p65 was associated with an increase in BTB permeability by down-regulating the expression of TJ associated proteins, thereby promoting Dox delivery across BTB.     To explore the therapeutic effects of lithium combined with second-generation antipsychotics (SGAs) of quetiapine, clozapine, olanzapine, and risperidone for the treatment of manic episodes in patients with bipolar disorder (BD) to guide the selection of medications.

    We examined the case data of patients with BD who experienced manic episodes and were hospitalized in a Class 3A Psychiatric Hospital in Anhui Province from January 2015 to October 2019. The enrolled patients were rated using the ****-Rafaelsen Mania Rating Scale (BRMS) before and after treatment, and relevant adverse effects were monitored.

Fifteen care needs consisting of most of quality measures for people living with dementia and their caregivers were developed by the care team. Through face-to-face evaluations, individualized care needs were collected. The Apriori algorithm was used to identify care bundles for the patients and their caregivers.

    Six basic care needs for patients and their caregivers were identified, including appropriate schedule of activities, regular outpatient follow-up treatment, introduction and referral of social resources, referral to family support groups and care skills training, care for the mood of the caregiver, and health education for dementia and behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia. Compared to subjects with all dementia subtypes from the previous studies, care for the mood of the caregiver was an important and frequent care need for the male patients with VCI and their caregivers. A comparison among the study and similar studies was made to highlight the strength of this study concentrating on the precise selection of care needs.

    Transplantation of lungs from donation after circulatory death (DCD) in addition to donation after brain death (DBD) became routine worldwide to address the global organ shortage. The development of ex vivo lung perfusion (EVLP) for donor lung assessment and repair contributed to the increased use of DCD lungs. We hypothesise that better understanding of the differences between lungs from DBD and DCD donors, and between EVLP and directly transplanted (non-EVLP) lungs, will lead to discovery of the injury specific targets for donor lung repair and reconditioning.

    Tissue biopsies from human DBD (n=177) and DCD (n=65) donor lungs assessed with or without EVLP, were collected at the end of cold ischemic time. All samples were processed with microarray assay. Gene expression, network and pathway analyses were performed using R, Ingenuity Pathway Analysis and STRING. Results were validated with protein assay, multiple logistic regression and 10-fold cross validation.

    Our analyses showed that lungs from DBD donors have up-regulation of inflammatory cytokines and pathways. Kidney inflammation and injury, termed lupus nephritis (LN), occurs in over half of patients with SLE and is a leading cause of disability and death. There is a high degree of short-term and long-term side effects associated with current LN therapies and they are not effective for many patients. Thus, novel therapies with reduced toxicity and improved efficacy are drastically needed. Many of the known LN susceptibility genes have functions that mediate inflammation via cytokine/chemokine production and activation of myeloid and B cells. Understanding the cellular and molecular mechanisms mediated by these variant gene products provides valuable insight for the development of improved and personalised diagnostics and therapeutics.     National guidance recommends CT-head for all children <1 year old with suspected physical abuse, and to be considered for those <2 years old to exclude abusive head trauma.

    To investigate whether this guidance is followed, and the associations between clinical presentation and CT findings, to determine whether guidance could be refined.

    A retrospective case note review of all children <2 years old who underwent medical assessment for suspected abuse (2009-2017). Outcome measures were frequency of CT-head, and diagnostic yield of intracranial injury, skull fracture or both.

    CT-head was undertaken in 60.3% (152/252) of children <12 months old and 7.8% (13/167) of those aged 12-24 months. The diagnostic yield in children who had a CT-head was 27.1% in children <6 months old, 14.3% in those 6-12 months old (p=0.07) and 42.6% (6/13) in those 12-24 months old. For those with head swelling or neurological impairment, it was 84.2% (32/38). In children <12 months old without these clinical fe.

    A retrospective cross-sectional review of case records of infants undergoing skeletal survey for suspected physical abuse in Wessex, England. The main outcome measure was yield of intracranial injuries on CT head scan.

    In total, n=363 CT head scans were included (n=275 aged <6 months). The overall yield of intracranial injury was 37 (10%). Among 68 infants presenting with neurological signs or skull fractures, yield was 36 (53%) compared with just 1 (0.34%) of 295 without neurological signs or skull fractures. This one intracranial injury was found to be consistent with an accidental fall. Scalp injury was the only additional clinical feature associated with intracranial injury.

We hypothesise that better understanding of the differences between lungs from DBD and DCD donors, and between EVLP and directly transplanted (non-EVLP) lungs, will lead to discovery of the injury specific targets for donor lung repair and reconditioning. Tissue biopsies from human DBD (n=177) and DCD (n=65) donor lungs assessed with or without EVLP, were collected at the end of cold ischemic time. All samples were processed with microarray assay. Gene expression, network and pathway analyses were performed using R, Ingenuity Pathway Analysis and STRING. Results were validated with protein assay, multiple logistic regression and 10-fold cross validation. Our analyses showed that lungs from DBD donors have up-regulation of inflammatory cytokines and pathways. In contrast, DCD lungs display a transcriptome signature of pathways associated with cell death, apoptosis and necrosis. Network centrality revealed specific drug targets to rehabilitate the DBD lungs. Moreover, in DBD lungs, TNFR1/2 signalling pathways and macrophage migration inhibitory factor associated pathways were activated in the EVLP group A panel of genes that differentiate the EVLP from non-EVLP group in DBD lungs was identified. Kidney inflammation and injury, termed lupus nephritis (LN), occurs in over half of patients with SLE and is a leading cause of disability and death. There is a high degree of short-term and long-term side effects associated with current LN therapies and they are not effective for many patients. Thus, novel therapies with reduced toxicity and improved efficacy are drastically needed. Many of the known LN susceptibility genes have functions that mediate inflammation via cytokine/chemokine production and activation of myeloid and B cells. Understanding the cellular and molecular mechanisms mediated by these variant gene products provides valuable insight for the development of improved and personalised diagnostics and therapeutics. National guidance recommends CT-head for all children <1 year old with suspected physical abuse, and to be considered for those <2 years old to exclude abusive head trauma. To investigate whether this guidance is followed, and the associations between clinical presentation and CT findings, to determine whether guidance could be refined. A retrospective case note review of all children <2 years old who underwent medical assessment for suspected abuse (2009-2017). Outcome measures were frequency of CT-head, and diagnostic yield of intracranial injury, skull fracture or both. CT-head was undertaken in 60.3% (152/252) of children <12 months old and 7.8% (13/167) of those aged 12-24 months. The diagnostic yield in children who had a CT-head was 27.1% in children <6 months old, 14.3% in those 6-12 months old (p=0.07) and 42.6% (6/13) in those 12-24 months old. Among 68 infants presenting with neurological signs or skull fractures, yield was 36 (53%) compared with just 1 (0.34%) of 295 without neurological signs or skull fractures. This one intracranial injury was found to be consistent with an accidental fall. Scalp injury was the only additional clinical feature associated with intracranial injury. The objective of this study was to explore Australian hospital nurses' views on antimicrobial resistance and antimicrobial stewardship (AMS) in a hospital setting, in order to better understand the opportunities for and challenges to integration of nursing staff in antimicrobial optimisation within hospital settings. Qualitative one-on-one, semistructured interviews. Interview transcripts were digitally audio-recorded and transcribed verbatim. Data were subject to thematic analysis supported by the framework approach and informed by sociological methods and theory. Four hospitals (three public and one private), across metropolitan, regional and remote areas, in two Australian states. 86 nurses (77 females, 9 males), from a range of hospital departments, at a range of career stages. Findings were organised into three thematic domains (1) the current peripheral role of nurses in AMS; (2) the importance of AMS as a collaborative effort, and current tensions around interprofessional roles and (3) how nurses can bolster antimicrobial optimisation within AMS and beyond.

Data were collected between 14th and 17th July 2020. We used linear regression analyses to investigate associations between intention to be vaccinated for COVID-19 "when a vaccine becomes available to you" and sociodemographic factors, previous influenza vaccination, general vaccine attitudes and beliefs, attitudes and beliefs about COVID-19, and attitudes and beliefs about a COVID-19 vaccination. 64% of participants reported being very likely to be vaccinated against COVID-19, 27% were unsure, and 9% reported being very unlikely to be vaccinated. Personal and clinical characteristics, previous influenza vaccination, general vaccination beliefs, and beliefs and attitudes about COVID-19 and a COVID-19 vaccination explained 76% of the variance in vaccination intention. Intention to be vaccinated was associated with more positive general COVID-19 vaccination beliefs and attitudes, weaker beliefs that the vaccination would cause side effects or be unsafe, greater perceived information sufficiency to make an informed decision about COVID-19 vaccination, greater perceived risk of COVID-19 to others (but not risk to oneself), older age, and having been vaccinated for influenza last winter (2019/20).     Hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH) is a rare but severe, life-threatening inflammatory condition if untreated. We aimed to investigate the etiologies, outcomes, and risk factors for death in children and adults with HLH.

    The medical records of patients who met the HLH criteria of two regional university hospitals in Korea between January 2001 and December 2019 were retrospectively investigated.

    Sixty patients with HLH (35 children and 25 adults) were included. The median age at diagnosis was 7.0 years (range, 0.1-83 years), and the median follow-up duration was 8.5 months (range, 0-204 months). Four patients had primary HLH, 48 patients had secondary HLH (20 infection-associated, 18 neoplasm-associated, and 10 autoimmune-associated HLH), and eight patients had HLH of unknown cause. Infection was the most common cause in children (14/35, 40.0%), whereas neoplasia was the most common cause in adults (13/25, 52.0%). Twenty-eight patients were treated with HLH-2004/94 immunochemotherapy. The 5-year overall survival (OS) rate for all HLH patients was 59.9%. The 5-year OS rates for patients with primary, infection-associated, neoplasm-associated, autoimmune-associated, and unknown cause HLH were 25.0%, 85.0%, 26.7%, 87.5%, and 62.5%, respectively. Using multivariate analysis, neoplasm-induced HLH (p=0.001) and a platelet count <50×109/L (p=0.008) were identified as independent risk factors for poor prognosis in patients with HLH.

Here, we report a case of pancreatic metastasis from malignant PT of the breast in a 48-year-old woman. She had had three episodes of recurrence of malignant PT in her right breast. She presented with epigastric pain for 2 months. Computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging revealed a 6 cm-sized, well-defined, heterogeneous mass with peripheral enhancement in the body of the pancreas. Endoscopic ultrasonography-guided fine-needle aspiration was performed, and the pathologic report suggested spindle cell mesenchymal neoplasm. Subsequently, surgical excision was performed, and the mass was confirmed as a metastatic malignant PT. The imaging findings are discussed and the literature is briefly reviewed in this report.

  • Cancer is widely recognized as a global public health problem. Breast, prostate, and cervical cancer are among the most frequent types in developing countries. Assessing their incidence and mortality by regions and municipalities is important to guide evidence-based health policy. Our aim was to describe the incidence and mortality trends for breast, cervical, and prostate cancer across regions and municipalities in Colombia during 2018.

    We performed a cross-sectional analysis with data from people with breast, prostate, or cervical cancer, reported to the National Administrative Cancer Registry during 2018. A descriptive analysis was performed. Age-standardized incidence and mortality rates were estimated at national, regional, and municipal levels. Finally, we identify the regions and municipalities with significantly higher or lower incidence and mortality rates compared to national estimations.

    Breast cancer was the most frequent type among all new cases and deaths in Colombia. Breast, prostate and cervical cancer incidence and mortality rates per 100,000 were 18.69 (CI 95% 18.15-19.25) and 10.48 (CI 95% 10.07-10.91); 11.34 (CI 95% 10.90-11.78) and 7.58 (CI 95% 7.22-7.96); 5.93 (CI 95% 5.62-6.25) and 4.31 (CI 95% 4.05-4.58), respectively. Eastern region had both, incidence and mortality rates, significantly lower than national for all types of cancer. By municipalities, there was a heterogeneous pattern. Nonetheless, Agua de Dios (Cundinamarca), had one of the highest incidence rates for all types.

    We observed clear differences in cancer incidence and mortality across regions and municipalities, depending on each type of cancer. Our findings are important to improve screening coverage, early detection, and treatment in the country.

    The incidence of thyroid cancer (TC) has increased rapidly over the past few decades in Korea. This study investigated whether the TC epidemic has been driven by overdiagnosis.

    We calculated the TC screening rate from mid-2008 through mid-2014, and the incidence, postoperative complication, and mortality rates of TC between 2006 and 2015, using data from the Korea Community Health Survey, the National Health Insurance Database, and the cause-of-death data of Statistics Korea. Trends in age-standardized rates of all indicators were examined, along with income gaps therein. Analyses were conducted for lung cancer and stroke as negative control outcomes.

    The incidence rate of TC increased from 46.6 per 100,000 to 115.0 per 100,000 between 2006 and 2012, and then decreased to 63.5 per 100,000 in 2015. Despite these remarkable changes in incidence, mortality did not fluctuate during the same period. High income was associated with high rates of screening, incidence, and postoperative complications, while low income showed an association with a high mortality rate. Analyses using negative control outcomes showed that high income was associated with low rates of both incidence and mortality, which contrasted with the patterns of TC. The recent decreases in TC incidence and postoperative complications, which reflect societal concerns about the overdiagnosis of TC, were more pronounced in high-income individuals than in low-income individuals.

    This study aimed to evaluate the prognostic impact of nutritional and inflammatory measures (controlling nutritional status (CONUT) score, prognostic nutritional index (PNI), and modified Glasgow prognostic score (mGPS)) on overall survival (OS) in patients with stage IV colorectal cancer (CRC).

    Subjects were 996 patients with stage IV CRC who were referred to the National Cancer Center Hospital between 2001 and 2015.     The aim of this study is to describe the prevalence and mortality of bladder cancer (BCa) using data obtained in the Global Burden of Disease study performed in 2017 (GBD 2017).

    Data on BCa for 2017, including prevalence, mortality, and disability-adjusted life years (DALYs), were obtained from GBD 2017 at the global, regional, and national levels. We also analyzed the association of BCa burden with the country development level.

    There were 2.63 million BCa cases estimated from the GBD 2017 data, with 200,000 persons dying of BCa, resulting in 3.60 million DALYs in 2017. The age-standardized prevalence (ASP) of BCa was 32.91/100,000 persons, and age-standardized death rate (ASDR) was 2.57/100,000 persons. The ASP and ASDR of BCa were higher in males than in females, and higher in people older than 60 years. The ASP and ASDR of BCa were higher in Western Europe and Central Europe than in South Asia, Andean Latin America, and Central Latin America, and higher in countries with a higher sociodemographic index (SDI). Correlation analysis identified that the ASP and ASDR of BCa were positively correlated with the country SDI (P < 0.0001 and ρ = 0.68 for ASP, and P = 0.0048 and ρ = 0.20 for ASDR). In addition, 33.72% deaths and 36.80% DALYs caused by BCa could be attributed to smoking globally.

    The prevalence and mortality of BCa were very high in 2017, especially in high-SDI countries. Smoking-cessation strategies should be strengthened to control the burden associated with BCa.

This study aimed to evaluate the prognostic impact of nutritional and inflammatory measures (controlling nutritional status (CONUT) score, prognostic nutritional index (PNI), and modified Glasgow prognostic score (mGPS)) on overall survival (OS) in patients with stage IV colorectal cancer (CRC). Subjects were 996 patients with stage IV CRC who were referred to the National Cancer Center Hospital between 2001 and 2015. The aim of this study is to describe the prevalence and mortality of bladder cancer (BCa) using data obtained in the Global Burden of Disease study performed in 2017 (GBD 2017). Data on BCa for 2017, including prevalence, mortality, and disability-adjusted life years (DALYs), were obtained from GBD 2017 at the global, regional, and national levels. We also analyzed the association of BCa burden with the country development level. There were 2.63 million BCa cases estimated from the GBD 2017 data, with 200,000 persons dying of BCa, resulting in 3.60 million DALYs in 2017. The age-standardized prevalence (ASP) of BCa was 32.91/100,000 persons, and age-standardized death rate (ASDR) was 2.57/100,000 persons. The ASP and ASDR of BCa were higher in males than in females, and higher in people older than 60 years. The ASP and ASDR of BCa were higher in Western Europe and Central Europe than in South Asia, Andean Latin America, and Central Latin America, and higher in countries with a higher sociodemographic index (SDI). Correlation analysis identified that the ASP and ASDR of BCa were positively correlated with the country SDI (P < 0.0001 and ρ = 0.68 for ASP, and P = 0.0048 and ρ = 0.20 for ASDR). In addition, 33.72% deaths and 36.80% DALYs caused by BCa could be attributed to smoking globally. The prevalence and mortality of BCa were very high in 2017, especially in high-SDI countries.
