The spreading of invasive species in new continents can vary from slow and limited diffusion to fast colonisations over vast new areas. We studied the sacred ibis Threskiornis aethiopicus along a 31-year period, from 1989 to 2019, with particular attention to the first area of release in NW Italy. We collected data on species distribution through observations by citizen science projects, population density by transects with distance method, breeding censuses at colonies, and post breeding censuses at roosts. The birds counted at winter roosts in NW Italy increased from a few tens up to 10,880 individuals in 2019. Sacred ibises started breeding in 1989, with a single nest in north-western Italy. The number of breeders remained very low until 2006, when both overwintering and breeding sacred ibises started to increase exponentially and expand their range throughout northern Italy with isolated breeding cases in central Italy. In 2019, the number of nests had increased to 1249 nests in 31 colonies. In NW Italy, the density of foraging birds averaged 3.9 ind./km2 in winter and 1.5 ind./km2 in the breeding period, with a mean size of the foraging groups of 8.9 and 2.1 birds respectively. Direct field observations and species distribution models (SDM) showed that foraging habitats were mainly rice fields and wetlands. A SDM applied to the whole Italian peninsula plus Sardinia and Sicily showed that the variables best related to the SDM were land class (rice fields and wetlands), altitude, and the temperature seasonality. The areas favourable for species expansion encompass all the plains of Northern Italy, and several areas of Tuscany, Latium, Sardinia, and Apulia.Mutual Coulomb interactions between electrons lead to a plethora of interesting physical and chemical effects, especially if those interactions involve many fluctuating electrons over large spatial scales. Here, we identify and study in detail the Coulomb interaction between dipolar quantum fluctuations in the context of van der Waals complexes and materials. Up to now, the interaction arising from the modification of the electron density due to quantum van der Waals interactions was considered to be vanishingly small. We demonstrate that in supramolecular systems and for molecules embedded in nanostructures, such contributions can amount to up to 6 kJ/mol and can even lead to qualitative changes in the long-range van der Waals interaction. Taking into account these broad implications, we advocate for the systematic assessment of so-called Dipole-Correlated Coulomb Singles in large molecular systems and discuss their relevance for explaining several recent puzzling experimental observations of collective behavior in nanostructured materials.Valproic acid (VPA) is widely prescribed to treat epilepsy. VPA-exposed astrocytes did not affect the morphology of inhibitory neurons. These data indicate that VPA-exposed astrocytes impair synaptogenesis specifically of inhibitory neurons. Our results indicate that maternal use of VPA would affect not only neurons but also astrocytes and would result in perturbed astrocyte-mediated neurodevelopment.Homeostasis of protein concentrations in cells is crucial for their proper functioning, requiring steady-state concentrations to be stable to fluctuations. We explore factors affecting stability by coupling the dynamics of mRNAs and proteins in a growing cell. We find that mRNA degradation rate does not affect stability, contrary to previous claims. However, global structural features of the network can dramatically enhance stability. Importantly, a network resembling a bipartite graph with a lower fraction of interactions that target TFs has a higher chance of being stable. Scrambling the E. coli transcription network, we find that the biological network is significantly more stable than its randomized counterpart, suggesting that stability constraints may have shaped network structure during the course of evolution.Single-cell chromatin studies provide insights into how chromatin structure relates to functions of individual cells. However, balancing high-resolution and genome wide-coverage remains challenging. We describe a computational method for the reconstruction of large 3D-ensembles of single-cell (sc) chromatin conformations from population Hi-C that we apply to study embryogenesis in Drosophila. With minimal assumptions of physical properties and without adjustable parameters, our method generates large ensembles of chromatin conformations via deep-sampling. Our method identifies specific interactions, which constitute 5-6% of Hi-C frequencies, but surprisingly are sufficient to drive chromatin folding, giving rise to the observed Hi-C patterns. Modeled sc-chromatins quantify chromatin heterogeneity, revealing significant changes during embryogenesis. Furthermore, >50% of modeled sc-chromatin maintain topologically associating domains (TADs) in early embryos, when no population TADs are perceptible. Domain boundaries become fixated during development, with strong preference at binding-sites of insulator-complexes upon the midblastula transition. Overall, high-resolution 3D-ensembles of sc-chromatin conformations enable further in-depth interpretation of population Hi-C, improving understanding of the structure-function relationship of genome organization.

The context of rural communities underscores the importance of tailored approaches to mitigate rural health inequities and promote the well-being of rural residents.
The aim of this study was to evaluate the temporal pattern of amputations in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), the risk of amputations by new and older anti-diabetic drugs (ADDs), and the interplay of peripheral artery disease (PAD) with therapy and amputation risk.
Using Centricity Electronic Medical Records from USA, 3293983 patients with T2DM were identified 169739 received sodium-glucose cotransporter type-2 inhibitors (SGLT-2i; no exposure to incretins); 149826 received glucagon-like peptide 1 receptor agonists [GLP-1RA, no SGLT-2i or dipeptidyl peptidase-4 inhibitor (DPP-4i) exposure]; 448225 received DPP-4i (no exposure to GLP-1RA or SGLT-2i); and 1954353 received other ADDs. The proportion of incident amputations per 10000 adults ranged between 4.7 and 6.8 during 2000-08 and significantly increased to 12.3 in 2017. Over 17211719 person-years follow-up post T2DM diagnosis, the rates per 1000 person-years of any and lower limb amputations (LLAs) were similar between SGLT-2i and incretins [95% confidence interval (CI) range 1.06-1.67], and significantly higher in other groups (95% CI range 1.96-2.29). In propensity score-adjusted pairwise analyses, the risk of LLA was not higher in SGLT-2i vs. GLP1-RA [hazard ratio (HR) (95% CI) 0.88 (0.73, 1.05)], and lower in SGLT-2i vs. DPP-4i/other ADD [HR (95% CI) 0.65 (0.56, 0.75)/0.43 (0.37, 0.49)]. The rate of LLA was similar in patients treated with canagliflozin, empagliflozin, or dapagliflozin. Patients with PAD had more than four-fold higher LLA risk (range of 95% CI of HR 3.6-6.0).

Whereas, the conclusion was still unclear according to the published data. To assess such roles of miR-196a in cancers, the present study was conducted based on published data and online cancer-related databases. To identify the relevant published data, we searched articles in databases and then the relevant data were extracted to evaluate the correlation between miR-196a expression and diagnosis, prognosis for cancer patients. The pooled results showed that miR-196a was a valuable diagnostic biomarker in cancer (area under curve (AUC) = 0.87, 95% CI 0.84-0.90; sensitivity (SEN) = 0.73, 95% CI 0.64-0.81; specificity (SPE) = 0.90, 95% CI 0.81-0.95), which was consistent with the data from databases (breast cancer miR-196a-3p AUC = 0.77, 95% CI 0.74-0.79; miR-196a-5p AUC = 0.71, 95% CI 0.66-0.75; pancreatic cancer miR-196a-3p AUC = 0.80, 95% CI 0.73-0.87; miR-196a-5p AUC = 0.61, 95% CI 0.51-0.71). In addition, the pooled result revealed that elevated miR-196a expression in tumor tissues (HR = 2.54, 95% CI 1.79-3.61, PHeterogeneity=0.000, I2 = 75.8%) or serum/plasma (HR = 4.06, 95% CI 2.67-6.18, PHeterogeneity=0.668, I2 = 0%) of patients was an unfavorable survival biomarker, which was consistent with the data from databases (adrenocortical carcinoma HR = 5.70; esophageal carcinoma HR = 1.93; brain lower grade glioma HR = 2.91; GSE40267 HR = 2.47, 95% CI 1.2-5.07; TCGA HR = 1.82, 95% CI 1.21-2.74; GSE19783 HR = 4.24, 95% CI 1-18.06). In short, our results demonstrated that miR-196a in tumor tissue or serum/plasma could be used as a prognostic and diagnostic values for cancers.The poor success rate of treating patients with aggressive sepsis in SARS-CoV-2 infections has highlighted again the challenges of managing systemic inflammatory conditions. Mitochondrial gene mutations contribute to a diverse range of incurable human disorders. MRT via spindle transfer in oocytes was developed and proposed to prevent transmission of pathogenic mtDNA mutations from mothers to children.

A sample of 79 adults who were overweight/obese was randomized to receive the 8-week ACT on Health program plus weekly phone coaching or to a waitlist. Participants completed 5.5 ACT sessions on average (out of 8) and reported moderately high program satisfaction. Participants in the ACT condition improved significantly more than the waitlist at posttreatment on the primary outcome of healthy eating index (HEI; based on 24-hr recall assessments) and almost all secondary outcomes assessing self-reported eating behaviors, weight, mental health, weight self-stigma, and psychological inflexibility.

Most (57/72, 79.2%) patients who reported a dose consumed experienced relief from depression at low therapeutic doses (25-150 mg/day). Small bowel obstruction secondary to endometriosis is extremely rare. This etiology is reported in 0.10% of cases and diagnosed incidentally.
32-year old female, critically ill patient was diagnosed with small bowel obstruction. After medical stabilization of multiple comorbidities, diagnostic laparoscopy was done and converted to open right ileocolectomy with ileo-transverse anastomosis. Definite diagnosis was ileal obstruction caused by transmural endometriosis. The patient's recovery was uneventful. At one-year follow-up, she remains asymptomatic.
We present the uncommon case of ileal obstruction due to transmural endometriosis that was treated surgically. We also present current literature review focusing on diagnostic and treatment methods of this rare disease.

Malignant triton tumors (MTT) are rare but highly aggressive tumors that originate from the Schwann cells. These tumors can occur in any part of the body, mostly present late and carry poor prognosis.
We present a 24-year-old man with a rectal MTT causing non-specific abdominal pain and recurring ileus. The MRI showed a rectal mass near the urinary bladder with compression on the seminal vesical. A complete surgical resection of the tumor was performed. The immunohistological report confirmed a rectal MTT. Because of persistent ileus during the post-operative palliative chemotherapy, another tumor debulking was performed. The patient died 9 months after the diagnosis of MTT due to local recurrence under chemotherapy.
MTTs are uncommon tumors in young age with high morbidity and mortality because of local recurrence also after complete resection.

A 61-year-old woman with left trimalleolar fracture had undergone surgery 3 years earlier and was referred to our hospital for further investigation of persistent left ankle pain and numbness around the left medial malleolus and plantar aspect of the foot. Clinical examination demonstrated plantar hypesthesia and a positive Tinel's sign at the tarsal tunnel. Imaging showed severe osteoarthritic change in the ankle and an osteophyte of the posteromedial distal tibia that appeared to be impinging on the tibial nerve. We performed arthroscopic ankle arthrodesis, which is less invasive than the open procedure, with removal of the osteophyte as the cause of TTS. Tarsal tunnel exploration revealed a large osteophyte pushing on the tibial nerve, and the osteophyte was removed.
About 8 weeks after surgery, bony union was achieved. At the 2-year follow-up visit, the patient could perform daily activities with almost no pain or numbness. This case offers further insight into the management of TTS with traumatic osteoarthritis of the ankle.

The prostate MRI performed revealed a suspected lesion. He had left renal colic associated with hematuria two weeks later. A CT scan of the abdomen and pelvis performed revealed a 14 × 12 mm middle and lower calyx excretory tract tumor on the left and a 27.6 × 26.4 lower right polar kidney tumor enhanced after injection of product from contrast. The prostate biopsy confirmed an adenocarcinoma of the prostate. He first underwent a left nephroureterectomy for the tumor of the excretory tract, followed by radiotherapy combined with hormone therapy for his adenocarcinoma. It was decided to monitor the tumor of the right kidney.

Small bowel obstruction secondary to endometriosis is extremely rare. This etiology is reported in 0.10% of cases and diagnosed incidentally. 32-year old female, critically ill patient was diagnosed with small bowel obstruction. After medical stabilization of multiple comorbidities, diagnostic laparoscopy was done and converted to open right ileocolectomy with ileo-transverse anastomosis. Definite diagnosis was ileal obstruction caused by transmural endometriosis. The patient's recovery was uneventful. At one-year follow-up, she remains asymptomatic. We present the uncommon case of ileal obstruction due to transmural endometriosis that was treated surgically. We also present current literature review focusing on diagnostic and treatment methods of this rare disease. Endometriosis should be included in the differential diagnosis of small bowel obstruction. Malignant triton tumors (MTT) are rare but highly aggressive tumors that originate from the Schwann cells. These tumors can occur in any part of the body, mostly present late and carry poor prognosis. We present a 24-year-old man with a rectal MTT causing non-specific abdominal pain and recurring ileus. The MRI showed a rectal mass near the urinary bladder with compression on the seminal vesical. A complete surgical resection of the tumor was performed. The immunohistological report confirmed a rectal MTT. Because of persistent ileus during the post-operative palliative chemotherapy, another tumor debulking was performed. The patient died 9 months after the diagnosis of MTT due to local recurrence under chemotherapy. Associations between diet, psychosocial stress, and neurodegenerative disease, including Alzheimer's disease (AD), have been reported, but causal relationships are difficult to determine in human studies.
We used structural magnetic resonance imaging in a well-validated non-human primate model of AD-like neuropathology to examine the longitudinal effects of diet (Mediterranean vs Western) and social subordination stress on brain anatomy, including global volumes, cortical thicknesses and volumes, and 20 individual regions of interest (ROIs).
Western diet resulted in greater cortical thicknesses, total brain volumes, and gray matter, and diminished cerebrospinal fluid and white matter volumes. Socially stressed subordinates had smaller whole brain volumes but larger ROIs relevant to AD than dominants.
The observation of increased size of AD-related brain areas is consistent with similar reports of mid-life volume increases predicting increased AD risk later in life. While the biological mechanisms underlying the findings require future investigation, these observations suggest that Western diet and psychosocial stress instigate pathologic changes that increase risk of AD-associated neuropathology, whereas the Mediterranean diet may protect the brain.

The genetic manipulation of large polyketide gene clusters is challenging, and approaches delivering reliable efficiency and accuracy are desired. Herein, a delicate strategy to enhance salinomycin production was devised and evaluated. We reconstructed a minimized sal gene cluster (mini-cluster) on pSET152 including key genes responsible for tailoring modification, antibiotic resistance, positive regulation and precursor supply. These genes were overexpressed under the control of constitutive promoter PkasO* or Pneo . The pks operon was not included in the mini-cluster, but it was upregulated by SalJ activation. After the plasmid pSET152mini-cluster was introduced into the wild-type strain and a chassis host strain obtained by ribosome engineering, salinomycin production was increased to 2.3-fold and 5.1-fold compared with that of the wild-type strain respectively. Intriguingly, mini-cluster introduction resulted in **** higher production than overexpression of the whole sal gene cluster. The findings demonstrated that reconstitution of sal mini-cluster combined with ribosome engineering is an efficient novel approach and may be extended to other large polyketide biosynthesis.

The authors assess FFPE specimens from patients with a dilated aorta and bicuspid aortic valve (BAV), those with a standard tricuspid aortic valve (TAV), and those with Marfan syndrome (MFS) via histopathology and grade the conditions for elastic fiber fragmentation (EFF) and MALDI-IMS. The proteins using liquid chromatographic-mass spectrometry are identified and the results are confirmed by immunohistochemistry.
There is significant difference in terms of EFF between MFS and BAV, and TAV and BAV. Characteristic peptide signatures and m/z values in the EFF facilitate the characterization among the aortic specimens of BAV, MFS, and TAV. The m/z values from the aortic alpha smooth muscle actin and myosin heavy chains significantly increase in BAV compared with MFS and TAV. These findings are confirmed by immunohistochemistry.

Most lung cancer patients present with lesions in both lung fields and lymphadenopathy. Thus, transbronchial lung cryobiopsy (TBLC) and endobronchial ultrasound-guided transbronchial needle aspiration (EBUS-TBNA) are commonly performed for diagnosing lung cancer. However, the adequacy of these samples for next-generation sequencing (NGS) analysis remains unclear. This study aimed to compare the adequacy between TBLC and EBUS-TBNA samples for NGS analysis.
This retrospective cohort study included patients whose lung samples were collected via TBLC or EBUS-TBNA and analyzed using NGS. Out of 46 genes, the number of genes in TBNA and TBLC samples that could not be assessed via NGS analysis was mainly evaluated.
A total of 37 patients were included and classified into two groups (TBLC group, n = 18 and TBNA group, n = 19). The mean number of genes that could not be evaluated via NGS analysis was significantly lower in the TBLC group than in the TBNA group (0.9 vs. 10.3, P = 0.024). The median total area of fields, even if they have lymphadenopathy.

Sympathetic Crashing Acute Pulmonary Edema (SCAPE) describes patients who present with acute hypertensive cardiogenic pulmonary edema. These patients present in respiratory distress, and requiring immediate medical and airway management. The treatment of SCAPE includes non-invasive positive pressure ventilation (NIPPV) to maintain oxygenation, and high dose nitrates to lower blood pressure and reduce afterload. We present a case report of a patient with refractory hypertension to high dose nitrates likely due to nitroglycerin resistance or an attenuated response. The addition of nicardipine led to marked clinical improvement, normalized blood pressure and spared the patient from endotracheal intubation and admission to the intensive care unit.
To determine the effectiveness of healthy eating songs (HES) in improving adolescents' healthy eating knowledge, attitude, and practice.
Pretest-posttest quasi-experimental nonequivalent group design. Students from 2 of the selected schools (n = 37 and n = 35) received nutrition education using conventional classroom instruction and HES, whereas the other 2 (n = 30 and n = 31) received theirs using conventional classroom instruction only.

Nutrition education had a significant effect on knowledge (F = 65.7, P < 0.001), attitude (F = 85.2, P < 0.001), and practice (F = 131.5, P < 0.001). Improvement in knowledge, attitude, and practice was observed in both groups. However, the intervention group performed better than the comparison group in knowledge (95% confidence interval [CI], -0.1 to 2.8), attitude (95% CI, 1.7-9.7), and practice (95% CI, 2.8-5.8). Geographical location had a significant effect on knowledge (F = 7.1, P = 0.005). Interaction effect of treatment and geographical location was significant on knowledge and attitude of students.

Telemedicine use rapidly increased during the COVID-19 pandemic. This study assessed quality aspects of rapid expansion of a virtual urgent care (VUC) telehealth system and the effects of a secondary telephonic screening initiative during the pandemic.
A retrospective cohort analysis was performed in a single health care network of VUC patients from March 1, 2020, through April 20, 2020. Researchers abstracted demographic data, comorbidities, VUC return visits, emergency department (ED) referrals and ED visits, dispositions, intubations, and deaths. The team also reviewed incomplete visits. For comparison, the study evaluated outcomes of non-admission dispositions from the ED return visits with and without admission and deaths. We separately analyzed the effects of enhanced callback system targeting higher-risk patients with COVID-like illness during the last two weeks of the study period.
A total of 18,278 unique adult patients completed 22,413 VUC visits. Separately, 718 patient-scheduled visits were incomplete; the majority were no-shows. The study found that 50.9% of all patients and 74.1% of patients aged 60 years or older had comorbidities. Of VUC visits, 6.8% had a subsequent VUC encounter within 72 hours; 1.8% had a subsequent ED visit. Of patients with enhanced follow-up, 4.3% were referred for ED evaluation. Mortality was 0.20% overall; 0.21% initially and 0.16% with enhanced follow-up (p = 0.59). Males and black patients were significantly overrepresented in decedents.
Appropriately deployed VUC services can provide a pragmatic strategy to care for large numbers of patients. Ongoing surveillance of operational, technical, and clinical factors is critical for patient quality and safety with this modality.

The aim of this article is to counsel rhinologists on how to modify their conventional practice during the COVID-19 pandemic by prioritising the need of procedures, identifying aerosol- generating procedures and using precise personal protection equipment for various endonasal procedures.
We did a review of articles indexed for MEDLINE on PubMed, ENT Cochrane, DOAJ and Web of Science databases using the keywords nasal endoscopy, SARS-CoV-2, COVID-19, aerosol generating medical procedures and rhinology to formulate guidelines for the safety of healthcare workers.
The review included evidence from 28 articles from the otorhinolaryngology, surgery, infectious disease, head and neck surgery and cancer biology literature. We have provided recommendations and relevant information for rhinologists during the COVID-19 pandemic, based on the available studies and data, to warrant high-quality patient care and requisite levels of infection prevention during rhinology procedures.

Sympathetic Crashing Acute Pulmonary Edema (SCAPE) describes patients who present with acute hypertensive cardiogenic pulmonary edema. These patients present in respiratory distress, and requiring immediate medical and airway management. The treatment of SCAPE includes non-invasive positive pressure ventilation (NIPPV) to maintain oxygenation, and high dose nitrates to lower blood pressure and reduce afterload. We present a case report of a patient with refractory hypertension to high dose nitrates likely due to nitroglycerin resistance or an attenuated response. The addition of nicardipine led to marked clinical improvement, normalized blood pressure and spared the patient from endotracheal intubation and admission to the intensive care unit. Telemedicine use rapidly increased during the COVID-19 pandemic. This study assessed quality aspects of rapid expansion of a virtual urgent care (VUC) telehealth system and the effects of a secondary telephonic screening initiative during the pandemic. A retrospective cohort analysis was performed in a single health care network of VUC patients from March 1, 2020, through April 20, 2020. Researchers abstracted demographic data, comorbidities, VUC return visits, emergency department (ED) referrals and ED visits, dispositions, intubations, and deaths. The team also reviewed incomplete visits. For comparison, the study evaluated outcomes of non-admission dispositions from the ED return visits with and without admission and deaths. We separately analyzed the effects of enhanced callback system targeting higher-risk patients with COVID-like illness during the last two weeks of the study period. A total of 18,278 unique adult patients completed 22,413 VUC visits. Separately, 718 patient-scheduled visits were incomplete; the majority were no-shows. The study found that 50.9% of all patients and 74.1% of patients aged 60 years or older had comorbidities. Of VUC visits, 6.8% had a subsequent VUC encounter within 72 hours; 1.8% had a subsequent ED visit. Of patients with enhanced follow-up, 4.3% were referred for ED evaluation. Mortality was 0.20% overall; 0.21% initially and 0.16% with enhanced follow-up (p = 0.59). Males and black patients were significantly overrepresented in decedents. The first PNE test failed due to nonoptimal lead placement. We utilized a surgical navigation system (SNS) with electromagnetic tracking to guide the lead placement to the S3 right nerve roots. Neither intra- nor postoperative complications occurred. After 2 weeks, the patient reported >50% symptom improvement, so she was recommended to receive a definitive SNM implant. Our case report demonstrated the feasibility and safety of CALP for the PNE test. Since the use of an SNS may guide easy and precise lead placement along the S3 afferent nerve roots, further studies are mandatory to outline the advantages and limits of this innovative technique.
The aim of this study was to investigate the clinical manifestations of overactive bladder (OAB) with migraine as a comorbidity and to shed light on possible new treatment strategies.
This study included patients aged 18 years and older who were admitted to urology and neurology outpatient clinics between March 1, 2019 and March 1, 2020 for OAB and migraine. The study questionnaire contained 3 sections (1) questions on demographic characteristics, (2) a migraine ID test, and (3) the Overactive Bladder Inquiry Form - V8 (OAB-V8) form.
A total of 265 patients participated in the study. The average age of the participants was 39.75±11.93 years. The patients were divided into 3 groups according to the coexistence of OAB with migraine group 1, OAB(+)/migraine(+); group 2, OAB(+)/migraine(-); and group 3, OAB(-)/migraine(+). The mean OAB-V8 score was 22.82 ±8.15 in group 1 and 25.64±7.49 in group 2. The mean OAB-V8 score of OAB patients with migraine as a comorbidity was statistically significantly lower than that of OAB patients without migraine (P=0.015). The median visual analogue scale (VAS) score was 7.11 (range, 2-10) in group 1 and 5.95 (range, 2-10) in group 3. This finding indicates that in patients with migraine, having OAB was associated with significantly higher VAS scores (P<0.001).
OAB and migraine may be comorbid conditions coexisting in a single patient. This comorbidity may lead to a lower perception of OAB symptoms in OAB patients or, conversely, to a higher perception of migraine pain. The aim of this meta-analysis was to evaluate the efficacy and safety of imidafenacin for overactive bladder (OAB) induced by benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) in men receiving alpha-blocker monotherapy.
We performed a systematic research of the PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane Library databases, and searched for studies about alpha-blocker with or without imidafenacin treatment for OAB in patients with BPH. We also investigated the original references of the included texts.
Four randomized controlled trials including 779 participants with BPH (389 in the alpha-blocker+imidafenacin group and 390 in the alpha-blocker only group) were studied. The main efficacy endpoint was the Overactive Bladder Symptom Score, which showed a mean difference of -1.88 (95% confidence interval, -2.32 to -1.44; P<0.00001), suggesting that alpha-blocker and imidafenacin treatment was effective in treating men with OAB. As other primary efficacy end points, the International Prostate Symptom Score (IPSS) total score (P=0.47), the IPSS storage symptom score (P=0.07), the IPSS voiding symptom score (P=0.60), and the IPSS quality of life score (P=0.18) indicated that 2 methods had no significant differences in treating men with OAB. In terms of safety, which was assessed using postvoid residual volume (P=0.05) and maximum flow rate (P=0.53), the analysis suggested that combination treatment was very well tolerated.

YKL-40 (chitinase 3-like 1 gene; CHI3L1) is an inflammatory marker that is increased in the blood of patients with inflammatory diseases, including cystic fibrosis (CF). The objective of our study was to explore the relationship between circulating levels of YKL-40, selected CHI3L1 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and the severity of CF disease.
A prospective cohort of 188 adult patients with CF was established in 2015. Blood samples and clinical data were collected over 2 years to analyze the circulating levels of YKL-40 and to genotype selected CHI3L1 SNPs. We also looked for an association between these factors and clinical parameters.
We found that according to the serum YKL-40 concentration, the patients could be categorized into two distinct groups low and high YKL-40. Compared to the patients in the low YKL-40 group, the patients in the high YKL-40 group had lower lung function (P < 0.001), a higher proportion of delF508 homozygote mutations (P= 0.027) and dysglycemia (P= 0.015). They were also more colonized with Pseudomonas aeruginosa (P= 0.003) and required more frequent antibiotic intravenous courses (P < 0.001). We also observed that patients expressing the C/C-rs4950928 genotype had higher levels of YKL-40 in their blood and were more frequently dysglycemic.
Our study suggests that YKL-40 could be a potential biomarker of CF disease severity. Furthermore, the CHI3L1 rs4950928 SNP could be a susceptible gene that could be used by CF health professionals to identify patients who are the most at risk of having a severe clinical profile.

Haemorrhage following proctological surgery is one of the complications with the greatest potential for severity. The aim of this work was to assess the frequency and risk factors of haemorrhage requiring hospitalization during 30-days postoperatively.
A retrospective cohort review of all surgeries performed in a Parisian department of medico-surgical proctology between January 2016 and June 2018 was performed. Demographic and surgical data were collected for patients who were hospitalized for postoperative haemorrhage. Their analysis was conducted as a single analysis followed by multivariate analysis.
A total of 7533 surgeries were performed on 6727 patients. The mean patient age was 42.6 (±14.3) years and 67.2% were males. Postoperative haemorrhage occurred in 111 patients (1.5%) with a total of 123 haemorrhagic episodes (12 relapses) within a mean of 6 (±5.5) days. In therapeutic terms, 28.5% of haemorrhages required transfusion, 37.4% required haemostasis in the operating theatre and 14.6% required haemostasis under local anaesthesia. Using multivariate analysis, haemorrhage was more frequent after haemorrhoid surgery and in the case of anticoagulant treatment, particularly direct oral anticoagulants, and if the ASA score was equal to 3. Active smoking was associated with a decreased risk of haemorrhage.

A total of 150 primiparous pregnant women over 20 years of age who underwent vaginal delivery with episiotomy INTERVENTIONS Participants were randomized into the music medicine, skin contact with the newborn, and control groups (with no treatment). After episiotomy repair (with the designated treatment or no treatment), the State Trait Anxiety Inventory and Visual Analog Scale were used to assess anxiety and pain, respectively.

Women in both treatment groups (music medicine and skin-to-skin contact) had significantly lower anxiety and pain levels than those in the control group. Blood samples and clinical data were collected over 2 years to analyze the circulating levels of YKL-40 and to genotype selected CHI3L1 SNPs. We also looked for an association between these factors and clinical parameters. We found that according to the serum YKL-40 concentration, the patients could be categorized into two distinct groups low and high YKL-40. Compared to the patients in the low YKL-40 group, the patients in the high YKL-40 group had lower lung function (P < 0.001), a higher proportion of delF508 homozygote mutations (P= 0.027) and dysglycemia (P= 0.015). They were also more colonized with Pseudomonas aeruginosa (P= 0.003) and required more frequent antibiotic intravenous courses (P < 0.001). We also observed that patients expressing the C/C-rs4950928 genotype had higher levels of YKL-40 in their blood and were more frequently dysglycemic. Our study suggests that YKL-40 could be a potential biomarker of CF disease severity. Furthermore, the CHI3L1 rs4950928 SNP could be a susceptible gene that could be used by CF health professionals to identify patients who are the most at risk of having a severe clinical profile. Haemorrhage following proctological surgery is one of the complications with the greatest potential for severity. The aim of this work was to assess the frequency and risk factors of haemorrhage requiring hospitalization during 30-days postoperatively. A retrospective cohort review of all surgeries performed in a Parisian department of medico-surgical proctology between January 2016 and June 2018 was performed. Demographic and surgical data were collected for patients who were hospitalized for postoperative haemorrhage. Their analysis was conducted as a single analysis followed by multivariate analysis. A total of 7533 surgeries were performed on 6727 patients. The mean patient age was 42.6 (±14.3) years and 67.2% were males. Postoperative haemorrhage occurred in 111 patients (1.5%) with a total of 123 haemorrhagic episodes (12 relapses) within a mean of 6 (±5.5) days. In therapeutic terms, 28.5% of haemorrhages required transfusion, 37.4% required haemostasis in the operating theatre and 14.6% required haemostasis under local anaesthesia. Using multivariate analysis, haemorrhage was more frequent after haemorrhoid surgery and in the case of anticoagulant treatment, particularly direct oral anticoagulants, and if the ASA score was equal to 3. The entry of SARS-CoV-2 within host cells results in a reduced availability of ACE-2 on the host cell surface followed by significant downregulation of ACE-2 gene expression. As ACE-2 is a well-known cardio-protective molecule, its downregulation could result in severe cardiac disorders. This review deals with a challenging aspect of SARS-CoV-2 infected patients who are asymptomatic or have mild syndromes similar to influenza infections. These patients are proving to be the Achilles' heel to combat COVID-19 mainly in developing countries of South Asia, where the average number of tests conducted per million individuals is considerably low. Consequently, there is high possibility that individuals with negligible respiratory trouble will not be tested for SARS-CoV-2. Hence, a huge percentage of the population have the risk of developing cardiovascular disorders as a bystander effect of viral infection apart from being potential reservoir of disease transmission. Based on available demographic as well as molecular data, this review predicts a huge spike in cardiovascular disorders among this undetected reservoir in post COVID-19 era.
A whole-genome resequencing-derived SNP dataset used for genome-wide association analysis revealed 196 loci significantly associated with drought stress based on root traits. Candidate genes identified in the regions of these loci include homologs of known drought resistance genes in A. thaliana. Drought is the main abiotic constraint of the production of common bean. Improved adaptation to drought environments has become a main goal of crop breeding due to the increasing scarcity of water that will occur in the future. The overall objective of our study was to identify genomic regions associated with drought resistance based on root traits using genome-wide association analysis. A natural population of 438 common bean accessions was evaluated for root traits root surface area, root average diameter, root volume, total root length, taproot length, lateral root number, root dry weight, lateral root length, special root weight/length, using seed germination pouches under drought conditions and in well-watered ranged from 11.24% (root average diameter) to 38.19% (root dry weight) in the well-watered environment and from 9.61% (root average diameter) to 39.05% (lateral root length) under drought stress. A whole-genome resequencing-derived SNP dataset revealed 196 loci containing 230 candidate SNPs associated with drought resistance. Seventeen candidate SNPs were simultaneously associated with more than two traits. Forty-one loci were simultaneously associated with more than two traits, and eleven loci were colocated with loci previously reported to be related to drought resistance. Candidate genes of the associated loci included the ABA-responsive element-binding protein family, MYB, NAC, the protein kinase superfamily, etc. These results revealed promising alleles linked to drought resistance or root traits, providing insights into the genetic basis of drought resistance and roots, which will be useful for common bean improvement.

The losses can be considerably mitigated by the use of a passivation-molecule-assisted microstructural reconstruction, which unlocks the full potential for improving device performance. The findings open a new avenue to understanding performance losses and thus the design of new passivation strategies to remove imperfections at the top surfaces and buried interfaces of perovskite photovoltaics, resulting in substantial enhancement in device performance.Laccases are widely present in bacteria, fungi, plants and invertebrates and involved in a variety of physiological functions. Here, we report that Beauveria bassiana, an economic important entomopathogenic fungus, secretes a laccase 2 (BbLac2) during infection that detoxifies insect immune response-generated reactive oxygen species (ROS) and interferes with host immune phenoloxidase (PO) activation. BbLac2 is expressed in fungal cells during proliferation in the insect haemocoel and can be found to distribute on the surface of haemolymph-derived in vivo fungal hyphal bodies or be secreted. Targeted gene-knockout of BbLac2 increased fungal sensitivity to oxidative stress, decreased virulence to insect, and increased host PO activity. Strains overexpressing BbLac2 showed increased virulence, with reduced host PO activity and lowered ROS levels in infected insects. In vitro assays revealed that BbLac2 could eliminate ROS and oxidize PO substrates (phenols), verifying the enzymatic functioning of the protein in detoxification of cytotoxic ROS and interference with the PO cascade. In this article, we present the results of a preliminary investigation on the relationship between perceived causes of eating disorders and the attitudes and behaviors of those with eating disorders.
