  • g Medical University.Heart failure (HF) constitutes the growing cardiovascular burden and the major public health issue, but comprehensive statistics on HF epidemiology and related management in Europe are missing. The Heart Failure Association (HFA) Atlas has been initiated in 2016 in order to close this gap, representing the continuity directly rooted in the European Society of Cardiology (ESC) Atlas of Cardiology. The major aim of the HFA Atlas is to establish a contemporary dataset on HF epidemiology, resources and reimbursement policies for HF management, organization of the National Heart Failure Societies (NHFS) and their major activities, including education and HF awareness. These data are gathered in collaboration with the network of NHFS of the ESC member and ESC affiliated countries. The dataset will be continuously improved and advanced based on the experience and enhanced understanding of data collection in the forthcoming years. This will enable revealing trends, disparities and gaps in knowledge on epidemiology and management of HF. Such data are highly needed by the clinicians of different specialties (aside from cardiologists and cardiac surgeons), researchers, healthcare policy makers, as well as HF patients and their caregivers. It will also allow to map the snapshot of realities in HF care, as well as to provide insights for evidence-based health care policy in contemporary management of HF. Such data will support the ESC/HFA efforts to improve HF management ant outcomes through stronger recommendations and calls for action. This will likely influence the allocation of funds for the prevention, treatment, education and research in HF. © 2020 European Society of Cardiology.Clinical laboratory diagnostic evaluation of the genomes of children with suspected genetic disorders, including chromosomal microarray and exome sequencing, cannot detect copy number neutral genomic rearrangements such as inversions, balanced translocations, and complex chromosomal rearrangements (CCRs). We describe an infant with a clinical diagnosis of Cornelia de Lange syndrome (CdLS) in whom chromosome analysis revealed a de novo complex balanced translocation, 46,XY,t(5;7;6)(q11.2;q32;q13)dn. Subsequent molecular characterization by whole-genome sequencing (WGS) identified 23 breakpoints, delineating segments derived from four chromosomes (5;6;7;21) in ancestral or inverted orientation. One of the breakpoints disrupted a known CdLS gene, NIPBL. Further investigation revealed paternal origin of the CCR allele, clustering of the breakpoint junctions, and molecular repair signatures suggestive of a single catastrophic event. Notably, very short DNA segments (25 and 41 bp) were included in the reassembled chromosomes, lending additional support that the DNA repair machinery can detect and repair such segments. Interestingly, there was an independent paternally derived miniscule complex rearrangement, possibly predisposing to subsequent genomic instability. In conclusion, we report a CCR causing a monogenic Mendelian disorder, urging WGS analysis of similar unsolved cases with suspected Mendelian disorders. METHODS Face-to-face interviews were performed with 17 adolescents after undergoing the first colonoscopy. RESULTS The phenomenon of undergoing colonoscopy as experienced by adolescents can be described as a collision between emotions and a desire to obtain answers to questions about the examination, as well as concerns about its result and the meaning of undergoing colonoscopy. The essential meaning is additionally described through its constituents a sense of vulnerability, an opportunity for symptom explanation, and sensibility regarding information. CONCLUSIONS The results can be concluded in terms of the knowledge that for adolescents a colonoscopy means more than an examination. Although colonoscopy is not experienced as painful, it evokes different emotions that affect adolescents. Therefore, a psychological preparation, on an individual level, is required before the colonoscopy. The FET test was first proposed as a replacement to the standardized AFT test nearly 15 years ago, but as of now, it has still not been accepted as a standalone replacement by regulatory authorities such as the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA). However, the ECHA have indicated that FET data can be used in a weight of evidence (WoE) approach, if enough information is available to support the conclusions related to the hazard assessment. To determine how such a WoE approach could be applied in practice has been challenging. To provide a conclusive WoE for FET data, we have developed a Bayesian Network (BN) to incorporate multiple lines of evidence to predict AFT. There are four different lines of evidence in this BN model including 1) physico-chemical properties; 2) AFT data from chemicals in a similar class or category; 3) ecotoxicity data from other trophic levels of organisms (e.g. daphnids and algae) and 4) measured FET data. The BN model was constructed from data obtained from a curated database [the company] and conditional probabilities assigned for the outcomes of each line of evidence. To evaluate the model, 20 data rich chemicals, containing a minimum of three AFT and FET test data points, were selected to ensure a suitable comparison could be performed. The results of the AFT predictions indicated that the BN model could accurately predict the toxicity interval for 80% of the chemicals evaluated. For the remaining chemicals (20%), either daphnids or algae were the most sensitive test species, and for those chemicals, the daphnid or algal hazard data would have driven the environmental classification. In this work, we green synthesized the zinc oxide nanoparticles from the Cassia auriculata flower (AS-ZnONPs) extract and evaluated its antimicrobial and in vitro anticancer potential against the OS MG-63 cells. The synthesized AS-ZnONPs were confirmed and characterized by using UV-vis spectroscopy, XRD, FE-SEM, and photoluminescence techniques. The antimicrobial activity of AS-ZnONPs was studied by disc diffusion technique. The viability of AS-ZnONPs treated MG-63 cells were examined by MTT assay. The apoptotic cells in the AS-ZnONPs treated MG-63 cells were assayed by dual staining. The MMP status of AS-ZnONPs treated cells were tested by Rh-123 staining. The cell adhesion assay was performed to detect the anticancer effects of AS-ZnONPs against MG-63 cells. The results of UV-vis spectroscopy, XRD, FE-SEM, and photoluminescence techniques proved the formation of AS-ZnONPs and it has the hexagonal wurtzite structures. AS-ZnONPs displayed the potent antimicrobial activity against the tested microbial strains. The AS-ZnONPs were appreciably inhibited the cell viability of MG-63 cells. The outcomes of fluorescence staining proved that AS-ZnONPs reduced the MMP and prompted the apoptosis in MG-63 cells. In conclusion, our discoveries demonstrated that the formulated AS-ZnONPs has the potent antimicrobial and in vitro anticancer activity against the MG-63 cells. We identified aerobic and anaerobic bacteria, including such taxa as Bacillus spp., Clostridium spp., Pseudomonas spp. and Stenotrophomonas spp., which may be considered as promoting plant growth. Because most of the indicated bacteria genera belong to spore-producing taxa (spores allow bacterial symbionts to survive adverse conditions), we suggest that these bacteria species contribute to the adaptation of orchids to the environment. We found clear differences in the microbiome between investigated closely related taxa, i.e., Epipactis albensis, E. helleborine, E. purpurata and E. purpurata f. chlorophylla. Some of the analysed orchid species, i.e. E. albensis and E. purpurata co-occur in habitats, and their bacterial microbiomes differ from each other.Enterococci, the opportunistic pathogens, pose several serious and life-threatening infections such as urinary tract infections, sepsis, and endocarditis. The situation is worsening due to the development of drug resistance in these pathogens against several antibiotics. The addition of anti-enterococcal compounds with antioxidant activity in fermented and packaged food may help prevent the transmission of food-borne enterococcal infections.     Staff working in mental health services provide care for individuals with a variety of difficulties, which can pose treatment challenges. Perceived lack of progress in patients can engender uncomfortable feelings within the clinician, such as frustration, 'heartsink' and 'feeling stuck'. The aim of this study was to explore the phenomenon of 'feeling stuck' amongst NCHDs in psychiatry.

    A total of 30 participants were recruited from three psychiatric hospitals to complete a 15-item questionnaire. The survey was designed to pursue a thematic analysis. Participants were asked to complete the survey anonymously, either online or paper version. The analysis was carried out by two researchers using open coding, with themes finalised through collective discourse.

    Three themes were elicited from the data. The central theme - 'causes of feeling stuck' - consisted of three subthemes (patient, doctor and system factors). Participants were adept at describing patient and system factors, but reflected on doctor factas material, to further develop their understanding of the underlying factors in both themselves and their patients.
    Good hand hygienic practices are considered an important factor to curb the transmission and emergence of SARS-CoV -2. Various studies, conducted previously during the outbreaks of SARS-CoV and MERS-CoV, have ascertained the effectiveness of adopting good hand hygienic practices to curb the emergence of these viruses. This study aims to explore public hand hygienic practices during the peak pandemic period.

    A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted among the general population of Pakistan to investigate the knowledge and perception about hand hygiene, self-reported hand hygiene practices, adherence to hand hygienic guidelines, and barriers to optimal hand hygiene. Kruskal-Wallis test, Mann-Whitney U test, and Regression model were used for statistical analysis.

As the disease spread, demands on health care systems increased, specifically the need to expand hospital capacity. Alternative care hospitals (ACHs) have been used to mitigate these issues; however, establishing an ACH has many challenges. The goal of this session was to perform systems testing, using a simulation-based evaluation to identify areas in need of improvement.

    Four simulation cases were designed to depict common and high acuity situations encountered in the ACH, using a high technology simulator and standardized patient. A multidisciplinary observer group was given debriefing forms listing the objectives, critical actions, and specific areas to focus their attention. These forms were compiled for data collection.

    Logistical, operational, and patient safety issues were identified during the simulation and compiled into a simulation event report. Proposed solutions and protocol changes were made in response to the identified issues.

    Simulation was successfully used for systems testing, supporting efforts to maximize patient care and provider safety in a rapidly developed ACH. Perceived lack of progress in patients can engender uncomfortable feelings within the clinician, such as frustration, 'heartsink' and 'feeling stuck'. The aim of this study was to explore the phenomenon of 'feeling stuck' amongst NCHDs in psychiatry. A total of 30 participants were recruited from three psychiatric hospitals to complete a 15-item questionnaire. The survey was designed to pursue a thematic analysis. Participants were asked to complete the survey anonymously, either online or paper version. The analysis was carried out by two researchers using open coding, with themes finalised through collective discourse. Three themes were elicited from the data. The central theme - 'causes of feeling stuck' - consisted of three subthemes (patient, doctor and system factors). Participants were adept at describing patient and system factors, but reflected on doctor factas material, to further develop their understanding of the underlying factors in both themselves and their patients. Conventionally, camera trapping uses two cameras to record passing subjects at unbaited stations but the design usually suffers from low capture rates. Here we report on the Baited-Camera Trapping (BCT) method which uses bait and single cameras at sampling stations to survey free ranging leopards. Using bait to improve the quality of data collected in population studies is not a new strategy but arranging baits and cameras according to the BCT method is a novel approach to achieving this goal. We show that the method can significantly enhance capture rates, improve individual identification and reduce cost when sampling leopards. Furthermore, the method allows easy sex determination and collection of morphometric data from camera trap photographs.     Endoscopic third ventriculostomy (ETV), with or without choroid plexus cauterization (±CPC), is a technique used for the treatment of pediatric hydrocephalus. Rigid or flexible neuroendoscopy can be used, but few studies directly compare the two techniques. Here, the authors sought to compare these methods in treating pediatric hydrocephalus.

    A systematic MEDLINE search was conducted using combinations of keywords "flexible," "rigid," "endoscope/endoscopic," "ETV," and "hydrocephalus." Inclusion criteria were as follows English-language studies with patients 2 years of age and younger who had undergone ETV±CPC using rigid or flexible endoscopy for hydrocephalus. The primary outcome was ETV success (i.e., without the need for further CSF diversion procedures). Secondary outcomes included ETV-related and other complications. Statistical significance was determined via independent t-tests and Mood's median tests.

Despite the high connectivity of the human insula, gliomas do not spread randomly to or from the insula but follow stereotypical anatomical involvement patterns. In the majority of cases, these patterns correspond to the intrinsic connectivity of the limbic system, except for tumors with aggressive biology. On the basis of these observations, the authors hypothesized that these different involvement patterns may be correlated with distinct outcomes and analyzed these correlations in an institutional cohort.

Rigid or flexible neuroendoscopy can be used, but few studies directly compare the two techniques. Here, the authors sought to compare these methods in treating pediatric hydrocephalus. A systematic MEDLINE search was conducted using combinations of keywords "flexible," "rigid," "endoscope/endoscopic," "ETV," and "hydrocephalus." Inclusion criteria were as follows English-language studies with patients 2 years of age and younger who had undergone ETV±CPC using rigid or flexible endoscopy for hydrocephalus. The primary outcome was ETV success (i.e., without the need for further CSF diversion procedures). Secondary outcomes included ETV-related and other complications. Statistical significance was determined via independent t-tests and Mood's median tests. Forty-eight articles met the study inclusion criteria 37 involving rigid endoscopy, 10 involviin the literature. Further direct comparison between the techniques is necessary. Despite the lower expected ETV success scores for patients treated with flexible endoscopy, the authors found similar ETV success and complication rates for ETV±CPC with flexible versus rigid endoscopy, as reported in the literature. Effective use of social media (SM) by medical professionals is vital for better connections with patients and dissemination of evidence-based information. A study of SM utilization by different stakeholders in the brain tumor community may help determine guidelines for optimal use. Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube were searched by using the term "Brain Tumor." Platform-specific metrics were determined, including audience size, as a measure of popularity, and mean annual increase in audience size, as a measure of performance on SM. Accounts were categorized on the basis of apparent ownership and content, with as many as two qualitative themes assigned to each account. Correlations of content themes and posting behavior with popularity and performance metrics were assessed by using the Pearson's test. Facebook (67 pages and 304,581 likes) was predominantly used by organizations (64% of pages). Top themes on Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube were charity and fundraising (67% of pages), education and research (7oncology content provided by medical professionals. Popularity and prevalence of qualitative themes differ among SM platforms. Thus, optimal audience engagement on each platform can be achieved with thematic considerations. Such considerations, along with optimal SM behavior such as media utilization and multiplatform presence, may help increase content popularity and thus increase community access to neurooncology content provided by medical professionals. Gliomas frequently involve the insula both primarily and secondarily by invasion. Despite the high connectivity of the human insula, gliomas do not spread randomly to or from the insula but follow stereotypical anatomical involvement patterns. In the majority of cases, these patterns correspond to the intrinsic connectivity of the limbic system, except for tumors with aggressive biology. On the basis of these observations, the authors hypothesized that these different involvement patterns may be correlated with distinct outcomes and analyzed these correlations in an institutional cohort. Fifty-nine patients who had undergone surgery for insular diffuse gliomas and had complete demographic, pre- and postoperative imaging, pathology, molecular genetics, and clinical follow-up data were included in the analysis (median age 37 years, range 21-71 years, M/F ratio 1.68). Patients with gliomatosis and those with only minor involvement of the insula were excluded. The presence of T2-hyperintense tumor infiltratio and postoperative tumor volume (p = 0.027) as significant negative independent prognosticators of overall survival and extent of resection (p = 0.015) as a significant positive independent prognosticator. Studies of athletes and children indicate that concussion symptoms are often more severe and prolonged in females compared with males. Given infrequent study of concussion symptoms in the general adult population, the authors conducted a sex-based comparison of patients with concussion. Adults (≥ 17 years of age) presenting with concussion to one of three urban Canadian EDs were recruited. Discharged patients were contacted by telephone 30 and 90 days later to capture the extent of persistent postconcussion symptoms using the Rivermead Post Concussion Symptoms Questionnaire (RPQ). A multivariate logistic regression model for persistent symptoms that included biological sex was developed. Overall, 250 patients were included; 131 (52%) were women, and the median age of women was significantly higher than that of men (40 vs 32 years). Women had higher RPQ scores at baseline (p < 0.001) and the 30-day follow-up (p = 0.001); this difference resolved by 90 days.

Regional anesthesia techniques are generally safe when done by an experienced practitioner. We therefore encourage the development of standardized multimodal analgesic protocols, which may facilitate opioid minimization and lead to better patient outcomes.
    Double coronary artery is a rare anomaly with just a few cases reported in the literature. This anomaly started being reported recently with the wide use of coronary angiography. Before the advent of advanced imaging and catheterization facilities most of the available data came from the work of anatomists. Two patients were recently operated in our department. In the first patient the preoperative coronary angiography showed two right coronary arteries. In the second patient a double ostium of the right coronary artery was encountered intraoperatively. We wanted to know the incidence of this anomaly and the available data in the literature.

    A PubMed research was conducted by using the term 'double right coronary artery'. More than 50 case reports and small case series were identified.

    The review of the literature revealed a lot of controversy and debate. When using the term 'double right coronary artery' authors do not always refer to the same entity. Different definitions and classifications have proposed without, however, gaining wide acceptance. In fact, there is a lot of confusion in the literature and cases that are rather common are presented as being 'extremely rare'.

    Even though the real incidence could be over or underestimated due to variability in coronary angiography interpretation, clinicians must be aware of this entity in order to avoid troubleshooting during percutaneous coronary interventions and cardiac surgery. There is need for a close collaboration between interventional cardiologists, anatomists and cardiac surgeons in order to standardize the nomenclature.

This study presents the first evidence for conspecificity of G. boninense from four countries where basal stem rot is prevalent. Seventy-three dikaryotic isolates of Ganoderma boninense from Indonesia, Malaysia, Papua New Guinea, and Solomon Islands were studied via mating tests, analyses of nuc internal transcribed spacer ITS1-5.8S-ITS2 sequences, and microsatellite genotyping. Sequence similarity in the ITS1-5.8S-ITS2 region was >99%, and all exotic isolates successfully mated with Papua New Guinea tester strains. Transfer of nuclei during mating was also confirmed via microsatellite markers for the first time in this species. Four microsatellite primers were used to generate evidence for 33 alleles in the four populations. All isolates studied had unique genetic fingerprints but alleles were also shared, suggesting gene flow. Heterozygosities were lower than expected in Indonesian and Papua New Guinea populations, consistent with the possibility of localized inbreeding.

  • The importance of fermentation temperature has been highlighted as it correlates with biodiversity and microbial metabolism for a microbial community. In this study, microbial community succession and volatile flavors during sauce-flavor Baijiu fermentation at different initial temperatures (LT group 28 ± 2 °C and HT group 37 ± 2 °C) were investigated using Illumina Miseq sequencing and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). First, we found that different initial temperatures had a significant effect on fermentation parameters (P less then 0.001); specifically, a higher initial temperature increased the accumulation of acetic acid and decreased the production of ethanol. Second, the microbial communities were characterized by decreased α-diversity and increased β-diversity (P less then 0.05) during heap fermentation. A higher initial temperature accelerated the increase in Lactobacillus and led to a faster microbial succession rate. Lactobacillus could be used as microbial markers of microbial succession rate in sauce-flavor Baijiu fermentation. Next, we found that acetic acid drove microbial succession under a higher fermentation temperature. Molecular ecological network analysis showed that different fermentation temperatures affected microbial interactions. The higher temperature enhanced microbial interactions of Lactobacillus. In addition, 50 volatile flavors were identified in the fermented grains. High temperature increased the content of total acid and reduced total esters, and Lactobacillus and Saccharomyces were the important microbiota related to different flavor compounds between the two groups. Collectively, altering the initial temperature led to differences in microbial succession rates and volatile flavors in the sauce-flavor Baijiu fermentation process. Therefore, these results are valuable for exploring quality control and management strategies in the spontaneous fermentation process.Dry beans are an affordable, nutritious food that often require long cooking times. Using fast and slow cooking genotypes from four different seed types (brown, cranberry, red mottled, yellow), the objectives of this study were to (1) characterize genetic variability for cooking time across multiple soaking time points; (2) determine the roles of seed coat and cotyledon cell wall physical traits in genetic variability for cooking time; and (3) identify seed coat and cotyledon cell wall compositional differences associated with genetic variability for cooking time. Genotypes were evaluated for cooking time on unsoaked beans and beans soaked for 3, 6, 12, 18, and 24 h. Cooking times were sharply reduced after 3 h of soaking and plateaued after 6 h of soaking. Interestingly, the genotypes in each pair that cooked faster when soaked did not necessarily cook faster when unsoaked. Greater seed coat percentage, cotyledon cell wall thickness, total and insoluble whole seed dietary fiber, and insoluble cotyledon cell wall isolate were genotypic factors associated with longer cooking times of soaked beans. Thicker seed coat macrosclereid- and osteosclereid-layers were genotypic factors associated with longer cooking times of unsoaked beans. HPLC-DAD analysis detected and identified a total of nine individual carotenoids namely violaxanthin, neoxanthin, antheraxanthin, lutein, zeaxanthin, β-cryptoxanthin 5,6-epoxide, β-cryptoxanthin, α-carotene, and β-carotene. β-cryptoxanthin and β-carotene represented 49.2% and 13.2% of the total carotenoid content (TCC) in the acetone extract from by-product B.     Patients with occult pneumothorax (OPTX) requiring positive-pressure ventilation (PPV) face uncertain risks of tension pneumothorax or chest drainage complications.

    Adults with traumatic OPTXs requiring PPV were randomized to drainage/observation, with the primary outcome of composite "respiratory distress" (RD)).

    Seventy-five (75) patients were randomized to observation, 67 to drainage. RD occurred in 38% observed and 25% drained (p=0.14; Power=0.38), with no mortality differences. One-quarter of observed patients failed, reaching 40% when ventilated >5 days. Twenty-three percent randomized to drainage had complications or ineffectual drains.

    RD was not significantly different with observation. Thus, OPTXs may be cautiously observed in stable patients undergoing short-term PPV when prompt "rescue drainage" is immediately available. As 40% of patients undergoing prolonged (≥5 days) ventilation (PPPV) require drainage, we suggest consideration of chest drainage performed with expert guidance to reduce risk of chest tube complications.

    A community lockdown has a profound impact on its citizens. Our objective was to identify changes in trauma patient demographics, volume, and pattern of injury following the COVID-19 lockdown.

    A retrospective review was conducted at a Level-1 Trauma Center from 2017 to 2020.

    A downward trend in volume is seen December-April in 2020 (R
    =0.9907). February through April showed an upward trend in 2018 and 2019 (R
    0.80 and R
    =0.90 respectively), but a downward trend in 2020 (R
    =0.97). In April 2020, there was 41.6% decrease in total volume, a 47.4% decrease in blunt injury and no decrease in penetrating injury. In contrast to previous months, in April the majority of injuries occurred in home zip codes.

Seventy-five (75) patients were randomized to observation, 67 to drainage. RD occurred in 38% observed and 25% drained (p=0.14; Power=0.38), with no mortality differences. One-quarter of observed patients failed, reaching 40% when ventilated >5 days. Twenty-three percent randomized to drainage had complications or ineffectual drains. RD was not significantly different with observation. Thus, OPTXs may be cautiously observed in stable patients undergoing short-term PPV when prompt "rescue drainage" is immediately available. As 40% of patients undergoing prolonged (≥5 days) ventilation (PPPV) require drainage, we suggest consideration of chest drainage performed with expert guidance to reduce risk of chest tube complications. Our objective was to identify changes in trauma patient demographics, volume, and pattern of injury following the COVID-19 lockdown. A retrospective review was conducted at a Level-1 Trauma Center from 2017 to 2020. A downward trend in volume is seen December-April in 2020 (R =0.9907). February through April showed an upward trend in 2018 and 2019 (R 0.80 and R =0.90 respectively), but a downward trend in 2020 (R =0.97). In April 2020, there was 41.6% decrease in total volume, a 47.4% decrease in blunt injury and no decrease in penetrating injury. In contrast to previous months, in April the majority of injuries occurred in home zip codes. A community lockdown decreased the number of blunt trauma, however despite social distancing, did not decrease penetrating injury. Injuries were more likely to occur in home zip codes.   • It has been reported that long intergenic non-protein-coding RNA 324 (LINC00324) promotes liver cancer by upregulating Fas ligand (FasL), which is a major player in intervertebral disk degeneration (IDD), indicating the involvement of LINC00324 in IDD. This study was carried out to investigate the interaction between LINC00324 and FasL in IDD.

    Plasma samples were collected from both IDD (n = 60) and healthy controls (n = 60). The expression of LINC00324 and FasL in plasma was determined by RT-qPCR. The interactions between LINC00324 and FasL in nucleus pulposus (NP) cells were analyzed by overexpression experiments.

    LINC00324 and FasL were upregulated in IDD patients, and they were positively correlated. After treatment, the expression levels of FasL and LINC00324 were significantly decreased. In NP cells, overexpression of LINC00324 increased the expression of FasL at both mRNA and protein levels, while overexpression of FasL did not affect the expression of LINC00324.

This article reviews the current literature regarding treatment of displaced olecranon fractures in the elderly. Literature search of the available databases. One randomised controlled trial has been published, comparing operative versus non-operative treatments of olecranon fractures in this age group. The study was terminated prematurely due to the high complication rate in the operative group. No difference in functional scores was recorded. Other published retrospective case series report good functional outcome scores and high satisfaction rates in the majority of patients in whom olecranon fractures were treated non-operatively. In this article, we use the dual-frequency 2-fold multiplexed vortex light as the probe beam and transform the Doppler signals from the low frequency domain to the high frequency domain successfully. The results show hardly any noise compared with the measurement in the low frequency domain. More importantly, the direction of rotation can be obtained directly by comparing the modulated signal and the reference signal. Our work demonstrates a new detection method for the RDE and provides a reference for its practical application.Time-multiplexed light-field displays (TMLFDs) can provide natural and realistic three-dimensional (3D) performance with a wide 120° viewing angle, which provides broad potential applications in 3D electronic sand table (EST) technology. However, current TMLFDs suffer from severe crosstalk, which can lead to image aliasing and the distortion of the depth information. In this paper, the mechanisms underlying the emergence of crosstalk in TMLFD systems are identified and analyzed. The results indicate that the specific structure of the slanted lenticular lens array (LLA) and the non-uniformity of the emergent light distribution in the lens elements are the two main factors responsible for the crosstalk. In order to produce clear depth perception and improve the image quality, a novel ladder-type LCD sub-pixel arrangement and a compound lens with three aspheric surfaces are proposed and introduced into a TMLFD to respectively reduce the two types of crosstalk. Crosstalk simulation experiments demonstrate the validity of the proposed methods. Structural similarity (SSIM) simulation experiments and light-field reconstruction experiments also indicate that aliasing is effectively reduced and the depth quality is significantly improved over the entire viewing range. In addition, a tabletop 3D EST based on the proposed TMLFD is presented. The fiber probe fabrication is rather simple and cost-effective, only relying on the procedures of combination tapered optical fiber preparation, surface modification and probe fusion splicing, and except for the probe fusion splicing, the other procedures can be mass prepared thus maintaining high efficiency and good reproducibility in fiber probe fabrications. Moreover, according to the experimental verifications, the proposed fiber probes can reach rather high sensitivity in refractive index sensing with high accuracy and good stability in both static and dynamic detecting modes. Therefore, the AuNP-based fusion spliced transmissive optical fiber LSPR probe is a preferred solution for refractive index sensing and can be widely used in various applications.

  • Mild to moderate equine asthma syndrome (mEAS) affects horses of all ages and breeds. To date, the etiology and pathophysiology of mEAS are active areas of research, and it remains incompletely understood whether mEAS horses with different immune cell 'signatures' on BAL cytology represent different phenotypes, distinct pathobiological mechanisms (endotypes), varied environmental conditions, disease severity, genetic predispositions, or all of the above. In this descriptive study, we compared gene expression data from BAL cells isolated from horses with normal BALF cytology (n = 5), to those isolated from horses with mild/moderate neutrophilic inflammation (n = 5), or mild/moderate mastocytic inflammation (n = 5). BAL cell protein lysates were analyzed for cytokine/chemokine levels using Multiplex Bead Immunoassay, and for select proteins using immunoblot. The transcriptome, determined by RNA-seq and analyzed with DEseq2, contained 20, 63, and 102 significantly differentially expressed genes in horses with noinically relevant, findings of this study. These findings further inform our understanding of inflammatory cell subtypes in mEAS.
    Medically Unexplained Symptoms (MUS) are physical symptoms that last for longer than several weeks and for which no (sufficient) somatic explanation can be found. Interventions for treating MUS in primary care are available, but their implementation in daily practice appears difficult. In the current study we aim to explore key barriers and facilitators to the implementation of MUS-interventions in primary care.

    A three-round modified Delphi study was performed, using the input of 58 experts that are (in)directly involved in the care for patients with MUS (e.g. general practitioners (GPs), GP mental health workers, policy advisors). In the first online questionnaire, we generated ideas about relevant barriers and facilitators on different implementation levels. These ideas were independently coded by two researchers, and reformulated into unique barriers and facilitators. In round two, participants selected the ten most relevant barriers and facilitators from round one, which were ranked on importance in round three.

    We identified 42 unique barriers and 57 unique facilitators to the implementation of MUS-interventions. A total of 97 volatile compounds were tentatively identified to distinguish three fermented instant dark from IGT. Alcohols, acids, esters, ketones, aldehydes, and heterocyclics could be clearly distinguished by principal component analysis (PCA), venn diagram, heatmap analysis and hierarchical cluster analysis (HCA). Descriptive sensory analysis revealed that AFT had a moldy, woody and herbal aroma; EFT showed woody and herbal aroma; and EAFT smelled an herbal, sweet, minty and floral aroma. This study indicates that fermentation using different microorganisms is critical in forming unique aroma characteristics of instant dark teas.The pea protein isolate-high methoxyl pectin-epigallocatechin gallate (PPI-HMP-EGCG) complex was used to stabilize Pickering emulsions (PEs) and high internal phase PEs (HIPPEs), and the effect of interfacial rheology on the microstructure, bulk rheology and stability of these emulsions was investigated. The PPI-HMP-EGCG complex with PPI to EGCG 301 exhibited partial wettability (81.6 ± 0.4°) and optimal viscoelasticity for the formation of stable interfacial layer. The microstructure demonstrated that the PPI-HMP-EGCG complex acted as an interfacial layer and surrounded the oil droplets, and continuous phases were mainly filled with excessive HMP, which enhanced emulsion stability. The formation of a firm gel-like network structure required a dense interfacial layer to provide the PEs (complex concentration of 0.1%) and HIPPEs (oil-phase up to 0.83) with ideal viscoelasticity and stability. The results provide the guidelines for the rational design of EGCG-loaded HIPPEs stabilized by water-soluble protein/polysaccharide complexes.β-Lactoglobulin (β-LG) is one of the major food allergens. Enzymatic hydrolysis is a promising strategy to reduce the antigenicity of β-LG in industrial production. The relationship between the cleavage sites of β-LG by protease and its antigenic active sites were explored in this study. Molecular docking and molecular dynamics (MD) were used to analyze the active sites and interaction force of β-LG and IgG antibody. Whey protein was hydrolyzed by four specific enzymes and the antigenicity of the hydrolysates were determined by ELISA. The results of MD showed that the amino acid residue Gln155 (-4.48 kcal mol-1) played the most important roles in the process of binding. Hydrolysates produced by AY-10, which was the only one with specificity towards cleavage sites next to a Gln, had the lowest antigenicity at the same hydrolysis degree. Antigenicity decrease was related to the energy contribution of the cleavage site in the active sites.
    Mild to moderate equine asthma syndrome (mEAS) affects horses of all ages and breeds. To date, the etiology and pathophysiology of mEAS are active areas of research, and it remains incompletely understood whether mEAS horses with different immune cell 'signatures' on BAL cytology represent different phenotypes, distinct pathobiological mechanisms (endotypes), varied environmental conditions, disease severity, genetic predispositions, or all of the above. In this descriptive study, we compared gene expression data from BAL cells isolated from horses with normal BALF cytology (n = 5), to those isolated from horses with mild/moderate neutrophilic inflammation (n = 5), or mild/moderate mastocytic inflammation (n = 5). BAL cell protein lysates were analyzed for cytokine/chemokine levels using Multiplex Bead Immunoassay, and for select proteins using immunoblot. The transcriptome, determined by RNA-seq and analyzed with DEseq2, contained 20, 63, and 102 significantly differentially expressed genes in horses with noinically relevant, findings of this study. These findings further inform our understanding of inflammatory cell subtypes in mEAS. Medically Unexplained Symptoms (MUS) are physical symptoms that last for longer than several weeks and for which no (sufficient) somatic explanation can be found. Interventions for treating MUS in primary care are available, but their implementation in daily practice appears difficult. In the current study we aim to explore key barriers and facilitators to the implementation of MUS-interventions in primary care. A three-round modified Delphi study was performed, using the input of 58 experts that are (in)directly involved in the care for patients with MUS (e.g. general practitioners (GPs), GP mental health workers, policy advisors). In the first online questionnaire, we generated ideas about relevant barriers and facilitators on different implementation levels. These ideas were independently coded by two researchers, and reformulated into unique barriers and facilitators. In round two, participants selected the ten most relevant barriers and facilitators from round one, which were ranked on importance in round three. We identified 42 unique barriers and 57 unique facilitators to the implementation of MUS-interventions.   • Building on recent work in the sociology of intellectual interventions, the study of cultural boundaries of science, and the role of ideas in politics, the article develops a theory of public epistemologies as argumentative tools people use to support or oppose political positions. Two prominent public epistemologies that have recently crystallized in Italian politics are taken as illustrations, with special attention paid to the role of two academics (an economist and an immunologist) turned public intellectuals. The article argues that the rise of populism in Italy has contributed to unusual alignments between political and epistemological positions, which has made questions about science and expert knowledge **** more relevant in contesting and supporting political decisions.COVID-19, which is rampant around the world, has seriously disrupted people's normal work and living. An online survey was conducted with car share members (n = 651) and non-members (n = 290) in Melbourne, Australia. All respondents had a shared car available within a 10-min walk of their home. The first part of the paper compared member and non-member householders (socio-demographically and geographically adjusted) and found that members owned significantly fewer cars than non-members. In the second part of the paper, a quasi-longitudinal comparison of car share members was conducted. One in three households reduced car ownership, and most reductions occurred in the year prior to joining car share. Fleet-based car share members reported a larger reduction in car ownership compared to peer-to-peer car share members. Residents of inner and middle suburbs of Melbourne reported similar "net" reductions in car ownership, the reasons differed. Residents in densely populated inner suburbs used car share to avoid or delay car ownership while middle suburb residents used car share to avoid purchasing a second car. The data indicate a positive relation between the level of state ownership and the provision of trade credit. Using an institution-focused framework, we further determine that the nation's institutional environment systematically affects the opportunities and motivations for SOEs to grant trade credit. Specifically, we find that SOEs grant more trade credit in countries with less developed financial markets, weaker legal protection of creditors, less comprehensive information-sharing mechanisms, more collectivist societies, left-wing governments, and higher levels of unemployment.

Therefore, 3D immune system-mimicking biomaterials could serve as useful platforms for tissue modeling and regenerative medicine development.Optical metasurface has exhibited unprecedented capabilities in the regulation of light properties at a subwavelength scale. In particular, a multifunctional polarization metasurface making use of light polarization to integrate distinct functionalities on a single platform can be greatly helpful in the miniaturization of photonic systems and has become a hot research topic in recent years. Here, we propose and demonstrate an efficient all-dielectric diatomic metasurface, the unit cell of which is composed of a pair of a-SiH-based nanodisks and nanopillars that play the roles as polarization-maintaining and polarization-converting meta-atoms, respectively. Through rigorous theoretical analyses and numerical simulations, we show that a properly designed diatomic metasurface can work as a nanoscale linear polarizer for generating linearly polarized light with a controllable polarization angle and superior performances including a maximum transmission efficiency of 96.2% and an extinction ratio of 32.8 dB at an operation wavelength of 690 nm. Three metasurface samples are fabricated and experimentally characterized to verify our claims and their potential applications. Furthermore, unlike previously reported dielectric diatomic metasurfaces which merely manipulate the polarization state, the proposed diatomic metasurface can be easily modified to empower 1-bit phase modulation without altering the polarization angle and sacrificing the transmission efficiency. This salient feature further leads to the demonstration of a metasurface beam splitter that can be equivalently seen as the integration of a nonpolarizing beam splitter and a linear polarizer, which has never been reported before. We envision that various metadevices equipping with distinct wavefront shaping functionalities can be realized by further optimizing the diatomic metasurface to achieve an entire 2π phase control.Developing suitable catalysts capable of receiving injected electrons and possessing active sites for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is the key to building an efficient dye-sensitized system for hydrogen production. Fe3S4 is generally regarded as an inferior HER catalyst among the metal sulfide family, mainly due to its weak surface adsorption toward H atoms. In this work, we demonstrate a facile metal-organic framework-derived method to synthesize uniform Fe3S4 nanorods and active them for HER by Ni doping. Our experimental results and theoretical calculations reveal that Ni doping can greatly modify the electronic structure of Fe3S4 nanorods, improving their electron conductivity and optimizing their surface adsorption energy toward H atoms. Sensitized by a commercial organic dye (eosin-Y), 1%Ni-doped Fe3S4 nanorods display a high H2 production rate of 3240 μmol gcat-1 h-1 with an apparent quantum yield of 12% under 500 nm wavelength, which is significantly higher than that of pristine Fe3S4 and even higher than that of 1% Pt-deposited Fe3S4. To expand this analysis, we inspect the crystal structures of 90 pairs of unrelated proteins, where both proteins within each pair is in complex with the same drug-like ligand. We computationally estimate that in 50% of cases, methylation of the ligand (a simple chemical modification often used to generate negative controls) at a position that will preclude binding to one protein (the intended target) will also preclude binding to the other (the off-target). These results emphasize the need to select negative controls with care and profile both chemical probes and negative controls against diverse protein arrays to verify that off-targets of probes are also hit by negative controls. We envision that various metadevices equipping with distinct wavefront shaping functionalities can be realized by further optimizing the diatomic metasurface to achieve an entire 2π phase control.Developing suitable catalysts capable of receiving injected electrons and possessing active sites for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is the key to building an efficient dye-sensitized system for hydrogen production. Fe3S4 is generally regarded as an inferior HER catalyst among the metal sulfide family, mainly due to its weak surface adsorption toward H atoms. In this work, we demonstrate a facile metal-organic framework-derived method to synthesize uniform Fe3S4 nanorods and active them for HER by Ni doping. Our experimental results and theoretical calculations reveal that Ni doping can greatly modify the electronic structure of Fe3S4 nanorods, improving their electron conductivity and optimizing their surface adsorption energy toward H atoms. Sensitized by a commercial organic dye (eosin-Y), 1%Ni-doped Fe3S4 nanorods display a high H2 production rate of 3240 μmol gcat-1 h-1 with an apparent quantum yield of 12% under 500 nm wavelength, which is significantly higher than that of pristine Fe3S4 and even higher than that of 1% Pt-deposited Fe3S4. The working mechanism of this dye-sensitized system is explored, and the effect of Ni-doping concentration has been studied. A negative control, a close chemical analog of the chemical probe that is inactive against the intended target, is typically used to verify that the phenotype is indeed driven by the targeted protein. Here, we compare the selectivity profiles of four unrelated chemical probes and their respective negative controls. We find that controls that chemically deviate from the probe by a single heavy atom can be inactive against up to 80% of known off-targets if the chemical modification has a charge-neutralizing effect. In such cases, a loss in phenotype upon treatment with the negative control may be driven by loss of inhibition of an off-target. To expand this analysis, we inspect the crystal structures of 90 pairs of unrelated proteins, where both proteins within each pair is in complex with the same drug-like ligand. We computationally estimate that in 50% of cases, methylation of the ligand (a simple chemical modification often used to generate negative controls) at a position that will preclude binding to one protein (the intended target) will also preclude binding to the other (the off-target). These results emphasize the need to select negative controls with care and profile both chemical probes and negative controls against diverse protein arrays to verify that off-targets of probes are also hit by negative controls. When available, a best practice should be to verify that two unrelated chemical probes targeting the same protein elicit the same phenotype.Intestinal homeostasis is tightly regulated by the orchestrated actions of a multitude of cell types, including enterocytes, goblet cells, and immune cells. Disruption of intestinal barrier function can increase susceptibility to pathogen invasion and destabilize commensal microbial-epithelial-immune interaction, manifesting in various intestinal and systemic pathologies. However, a quantitative understanding of how these cell types communicate and collectively contribute to tissue function in health and disease is lacking. Here, we utilized a human intestinal epithelial-dendritic cell model and multivariate analysis of secreted factors to investigate the cellular crosstalk in response to physiological and/or pathological cues (e.g., endotoxin, nonsteroidal anti-inflammation drug (NSAID)).
