Giant cell tumor of bone (GCTB) is a benign-aggressive tumor that has a high-rate of recurrence with curettage resection alone. Patients with GCTB in underserved regions of the world can have progression of the tumor with significant disability due to a lack of specialty care. We present a case of an en bloc resection of an aggressive, recurrent GCTB of the radius with excellent function and no evidence of tumor recurrence two years after surgery.
A 22-year-old right-hand dominant female in Haiti developed an aggressive recurrence of a giant cell tumor of bone (GCTB) of the distal radius. Treatment consisted of en bloc resection of the distal radius with the proximal row of the carpus and centralization of the ulna. At two-year follow-up, the patient maintained good functional capacity with no clinical or radiological evidence of recurrence.
GCTB can cause significant destruction of the bone and articular surface if not treated adequately. Papillary thyroid carcinomas (PTC) are differentiated forms of thyroid carcinoma. Sternal metastases from differentiated thyroid cancers (DTCs) are rare and are of particular prognostic interest. Radioiodine therapy has traditionally been the treatment of choice for metastases from differentiated thyroid cancers; however, bone metastases are known to be resistant to this form of treatment. Surgical resection of distant metastases from DTCs offers a better chance of achieving long survival and a better quality of life. We report the case of a 59-year-old women who presented a presternal mass for one year revealing metastatic papillary thyroid carcinoma, a total thyroidectomy with lymph node dissection and reconstruction of the sternal defect were performed. Overall, we demonstrate that radical resection of sternal metastases can be performed safely even in patients with poor prognosis to achieve palliation and potentiation of Radioiodine therapy.

Spontaneous esophageal rupture is a life-threatening condition caused by a sudden increase in the intraesophageal pressure. While surgery is the mainstay of management for spontaneous esophageal ruptures, in recent years, an increasing number of patients have been managed with endoscopic interventions. We report a case of spontaneous esophageal rupture managed with endoscopic closure using an over-the-scope clip (Ovesco Endoscopy AG, Tübingen, Germany).
A 68-year-old female presented with epigastric pain and left-sided **** pain following vomiting. A computed tomography scan revealed mediastinal emphysema and an esophagogram showed leakage from the left side of the lower thoracic esophagus into the mediastinum. The patient was diagnosed with spontaneous esophageal rupture localized to the mediastinum and was treated conservatively. However, she had persistent fever and continuing esophageal leakage on the esophagogram. On the 12th day of admission, a gastrointestinal endoscopy was performed, which found a 10-mm full-thickness longitudinal laceration on the left side of the lower esophagus. Endoscopic closure using an over-the-scope clip was performed. The next day, the patient became afebrile. One week later, esophagogram revealed slight residual leakage and an additional endoscopic closure using an over-the-scope clip was performed; the patient subsequently had an uneventful recovery and was discharged on the 44th day of admission.

The electrocardiogram is critical in this process. Although the ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI)/non-STEMI paradigm is well-established, with "STEMI" representing ACO, its evidence base is poor, and this can have dire consequences. The universally recommended STEMI criteria do not accurately diagnose ACO; in fact, they miss more than one-fourth of the patients with ACO, and also result in a substantial burden of unnecessary catheterization laboratory activations. We here discuss why we believe it is time to change the current STEMI/non-STEMI paradigm.
A new multi-electrode array-based application for the long-term recording of action potentials from electrogenic cells makes possible exciting cardiac electrophysiology studies in health and disease. With hundreds of simultaneous electrode recordings being acquired over a period of days, the main challenge becomes achieving reliable signal identification and quantification.
We set out to develop an algorithm capable of automatically extracting regions of high-quality action potentials from terabyte size experimental results and to map the trains of action potentials into a low-dimensional feature space for analysis.
Our automatic segmentation algorithm finds regions of acceptable action potentials in large data sets of electrophysiological readings. We use spectral methods and support vector machines to classify our readings and to extract relevant features. We are able to show that action potentials from the same cell site can be recorded over days without detrimental effects to the cell membrane. The variability between measurements 24h apart is comparable to the natural variability of the features at a single time point.

Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) illustrated the microstructure difference of four treatments, which might explain the relationships between antioxidant activities and the structures of phenolic compounds.
Earlier studies have demonstrated that a single-domain intervention, such as a brain-training (BT) game alone and a sulforaphane (SFN) intake, positively affects cognition. This study examined whether a combined BT and SFN intake intervention has beneficial effects on cognitive function in older adults.
In a 12-week double-blinded randomized control trial, 144 older adults were randomly assigned to one of four groups BT with SFN (BT-S), BT with placebo (BT-P), active control game (AT) with SFN (AT-S), and active control game with placebo (AT-P). We used Brain Age in BT and Tetris in AT. Participants were asked to play BT or AT for 15 min a day for 12 weeks while taking a supplement (SFN or placebo). We measured several cognitive functions before and after the intervention period.
The BT (BT-S and BT-P) groups showed more improvement in processing speed than the active control groups (AT-S and AT-P). The SFN intake (BT-S and AT-S) groups recorded significant improvements in processing speed and working memory performance unlike the placebo intake groups (BT-P and AT-P). However, we did not find any evidence of the combined intervention's beneficial effects on cognition.

However, due to the complex composition of DOM, the relationship between the natural properties of DOM and its ability to produce organobromine compounds is less understood. Here, humic acid (HA) was extracted and fractionated based on the polarity and hydrophobicity using silica gel, and the influences of different fractions (FA, FB and FC) on the photochemical bromination of phenol was investigated. The structural properties of HA fractions were characterized by UV-vis absorption, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and fluorescence spectroscopy, and the photochemical reactivity of HA fractions was assessed by probing triplet dissolved organic matter (3DOM*), singlet oxygen (1O2) and hydroxyl radical (•OH). The influences of HA fractions on the photo-bromination of phenol were investigated in aqueous bromide solutions under simulated solar light irradiation. FA and FB with more aromatic and polar contents enhanced the photo-bromination of phenol more than the weaker polar and aromatic FC. This could be attributed to the different composition and chemical properties of the three HAs' fractions and their production ability of •OH and 3DOM*. Separating and investigating the components with different chemical properties in DOM is of great significance for the assessment of their environmental impacts on the geochemical cycle of organic halogen.Acute chagasic encephalitis is a clinically severe central nervous system (CNS) manifestation. Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder affecting motor neurons. Pre-clinical studies drive the development of animal models that well mimic ALS disorder and enable both the dissection of disease processes and an early assessment of therapy efficacy. A comprehensive knowledge of neuronal and vascular lesions in the brain and spinal cord is an essential factor to understand the development of the disease. Spatial resolution and bidimensional imaging are important drawbacks limiting current neuroimaging tools, while neuropathology relies on protocols that may alter tissue chemistry and structure. In contrast, recent ex vivo studies in **** demonstrated that X-ray phase-contrast tomography enables study of the 3D distribution of both vasculature and neuronal networks, without sample sectioning or use of staining. From a nanoscale element point of view, the dynamics of natural arrangements, forming anisotropic patterns in preference to isotropy, still remains unclear. In this study, new developmental procedures for line patterns are suggested by stimuli-responsive viscoelastic nanocomposite network model systems. Forces originating from an internal source without directional orientation generate lines in preference to isotropic patterns. With repeated, non-oriented (or isotropic) and self-modulated strain variations, stress is accumulated to drive anisotropic orientations and further lines. The anisotropic elemental arrangement is justified by the equilibrium between the short-range attraction and long-range repulsion from a bottom-up viewpoint. Here, a highly sensitive phase-contrast X-ray microtomography approach is presented based on recorrection of abnormal projections, which provides comprehensive and quantitative characterization of TSV etching performance. The key idea is to replace the abnormal projections at specific angles in principles of linear interpolation of neighboring projections, and to distinguish the interface between silicon and air by using phase-retrieval algorithms. It is demonstrated that such a scheme achieves high accuracy in obtaining the etch profile based on the 3D microstructure of the vias, including diameter, bottom curvature radius, depth and sidewall angle. More importantly, the 3D profile error of the via sidewall and the consistency of parameters among all the vias are achieved and analyzed statistically. The datasets in the results and the 3D microstructure can be applied directly to a reference and model for further finite element analysis. The interface between the dental adhesive and the tooth was often strongly disrupted by the presence of large debonded gaps (on average 34% ± 15% on all surfaces). The thickness of the gaps spanned 2 µm to 16 µm. There was a large variability in the distribution of gaps within the bonding area in each sample, with some regions around the canal exhibiting up to 100% discontinuity. Although only several micrometres thick, the extensive wide gaps may serve as gateways to biofilm leakage, leading to failure of the restorations. They can also act as stress-raising `cracks' that are likely to expand over time in response to cyclic mechanical loading as a consequence of mastication. Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder affecting motor neurons. Pre-clinical studies drive the development of animal models that well mimic ALS disorder and enable both the dissection of disease processes and an early assessment of therapy efficacy. A comprehensive knowledge of neuronal and vascular lesions in the brain and spinal cord is an essential factor to understand the development of the disease. Spatial resolution and bidimensional imaging are important drawbacks limiting current neuroimaging tools, while neuropathology relies on protocols that may alter tissue chemistry and structure. In contrast, recent ex vivo studies in mice demonstrated that X-ray phase-contrast tomography enables study of the 3D distribution of both vasculature and neuronal networks, without sample sectioning or use of staining. Here we present our findings on ex vivo SOD1G93A ALS mice spinal cord at a micrometric scale. The key idea is to replace the abnormal projections at specific angles in principles of linear interpolation of neighboring projections, and to distinguish the interface between silicon and air by using phase-retrieval algorithms. It is demonstrated that such a scheme achieves high accuracy in obtaining the etch profile based on the 3D microstructure of the vias, including diameter, bottom curvature radius, depth and sidewall angle. More importantly, the 3D profile error of the via sidewall and the consistency of parameters among all the vias are achieved and analyzed statistically. The datasets in the results and the 3D microstructure can be applied directly to a reference and model for further finite element analysis. Adolescents with parents born outside the Nordic countries were more likely to have comorbid externalizing disorders (OR=1.6, CI 1.1-2.4). No social differences were evident in relation to family receipt of unemployment benefits. Social differences were found for both girls and boys in relation to psycof psychiatric comorbidity.
Although depression and personality disorders (PDs) often co-occur, less is known about the impact of PDs on health-related quality of life (HRQOL) in patients with depression. This study explores the differences in HRQOL of depressed patients with and without PD.
Baseline data of 397 patients with depression from two randomised controlled trials were used for this analysis. HRQOL was measured with the EuroQol-5D (EQ-5D). Differences were examined between three groups patients with 1) depression-only, 2) depression and comorbid PD and 3) PD and comorbid depression. The EQ-5D scores of the groups were compared with linear regression.
HRQOL scores were lower in the depression-only group than the depression + PD group, even though depression severity was higher in patients with PD. HRQOL in the PD ± depression group did not differ from the other groups. In addition, no associations were found between the type or severity of PD and HRQOL.
These findings could indicate that patients with PD are less affected by the impact of depression on HRQOL. In addition, the EQ-5D might not adequately capture the impact of PD on quality of life. Further research is needed to compare the EQ-5D with quality of life instruments that include more life domains.
Two study samples are combined, and therefore not designed to compare the three groups directly. Generalisation of the results should be done with caution.

Previous research has documented reduced heart rate and blood pressure variability in major depressive disorder (MDD), suggesting a limited capacity for cardiovascular regulation and diminished homeostatic resources in the disorder. This study aimed to complement this knowledge by investigating short-term cerebral blood flow (CBF) variability in MDD.
Using transcranial Doppler sonography, blood flow velocities in the middle cerebral arteries of both hemispheres were recorded in 35 MDD patients and 35 healthy controls, at rest and during serial subtraction task-induced mental stress. CBF variability was represented by the root mean square of successive differences (RMSSD) in the beat-to-beat mean, systolic and diastolic flow velocity.
Patients, as compared to controls, exhibited smaller mean and diastolic blood flow variability in MCA both at rest and during mental stress. Mean, systolic and diastolic blood flow variability were greater during the task than at rest. CBF variability did not differ betweentrol may contribute to the reduction of short-term CBF variability seen in MDD. Short-term CBF variability reflects preserved interplay of regulatory mechanisms ensuring optimal blood and energy supply to the brain. The impact of stressful life events (SLEs) on health has been empirically studied with significant correlations documented. We developed a comprehensive stress rating toolkit, the Cross-Cultural Stress Scale (CCSS) from a triangulated qualitative research study. This article describes our pilot test of the scale to explore demographic-specific patterns of SLE scores and evaluate the scale's aptitude in assessing the stress-health correlation.
The face and content-validated CCSS was shared via a web-based survey to diverse individuals grouped by (a) gender, (b) age, (c) race and ethnicity, (d) native, foreign-born or first-generation, (e) educational attainment, and (f) income. Participants from the Amazon crowdsourcing marketplace MTurk (N=216) first indicated perceived stress intensities assuming experiences of all the SLEs in the CCSS. They then selected SLEs they had personally experienced in the last 12 months (N=176). Multivariable analyses were conducted on perceived intensities. Correlations of experienced SLEs with self-reported health based on the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Health Related Quality of Life (HRQOL) indicators measured by the Behavioral Risk Factors Surveillance System (BRFSS) were analyzed.

Materials & methods The primary study endpoint was to verify balloon diameters calculated in quantitative coronary angiography (QCA) to diameters prespecified by the manufacturer and obtained at given pressures in subjects undergoing percutaneous coronary interventions. Results Forty-two subjects were enrolled (73.8% multivessel disease; 40.5% type B1 lesions; 100% device success). No clinically significant differences between expected balloon diameters and QCA were registered in predilatation (2.36 ± 0.11 mm vs. 2.43 ± 0.07 mm) and postdilatation (3.18 ± 0.19 mm vs. 3.21 ± 0.31 mm). Conclusions Our study results suggest that the River NC balloon is effective and safe. In the QCA evaluation, River NC balloon obtained prespecified diameters and lengths at applied pressures. Thus, it is imperative to understand how to couple infrared light efficiently to molecules near and inside catalytic material. Heterogenous catalysts are often nanoscale metal particles supported on high surface area, porous oxide materials and exhibit feature sizes across multiple scattering regimes with respect to the mid-infrared wavelength. These complex powders make a direct measurement of the scattering properties challenging. We searched for case reports and case series to identify the most effective methods for examination and treatment. The PubMed/Medline, Embase, and Scopus databases were searched. Our searches yielded 160 case reports/case series and included 214 patients. The mean age at diagnosis was 29.35 years. The RL distribution was 11. The most common symptoms were frequency (24.3%), dysuria (23.1%) and perineal pain (20.2%) in ZS patients with clinical symptoms. The diagnostic investigations used most frequently were magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) (67.8%) and ultrasonography (65.0%). Maximum flow rate on uroflowmetry, semen ejaculate volume, sperm count, and sperm motility were significantly lower in patients with ZS. Among 193 patients with treatment details, 65.8% underwent surgery; 9.8% underwent aspiration; 24.3% were followed with observation. Two patients died after surgery; all other patients remained asymptomatic after surgery. Fifty-two patients had complications and comorbidities. In patients with ZS, the most common symptoms are seminal vesicle cyst enlargement and compression of the bladder, ureter, and reproductive system. Focused high-energy extracorporeal shockwave therapy (fhESWT), which is a treatment modality for fracture nonunions, has been shown to have a direct antibacterial effect on planktonic bacteria. The goal of the present study was to investigate the effect of fhESWT on biofilms in vitro in the presence and absence of antibiotic agents. biofilms were grown on titanium discs (13 mm × 4 mm) in a bioreactor for 48 hours. Shockwaves were applied with either 250, 500, or 1,000 impulses onto the discs surrounded by either phosphate-buffered saline or antibiotic (rifampin alone or in combination with nafcillin). The number of viable bacteria was determined by quantitative culture after sonication. Representative samples were taken for scanning electron microscopy. We searched for case reports and case series to identify the most effective methods for examination and treatment. The PubMed/Medline, Embase, and Scopus databases were searched. Our searches yielded 160 case reports/case series and included 214 patients. The mean age at diagnosis was 29.35 years. The RL distribution was 11. The most common symptoms were frequency (24.3%), dysuria (23.1%) and perineal pain (20.2%) in ZS patients with clinical symptoms. The diagnostic investigations used most frequently were magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) (67.8%) and ultrasonography (65.0%). Maximum flow rate on uroflowmetry, semen ejaculate volume, sperm count, and sperm motility were significantly lower in patients with ZS. Among 193 patients with treatment details, 65.8% underwent surgery; 9.8% underwent aspiration; 24.3% were followed with observation. Two patients died after surgery; all other patients remained asymptomatic after surgery. Fifty-two patients had complications and comorbidities. In patients with ZS, the most common symptoms are seminal vesicle cyst enlargement and compression of the bladder, ureter, and reproductive system. None of the tested models significantly outperformed clinical raters (AUC = 0.75). Combining predictions of clinical raters and the best model descriptively improved discrimination performance (AUC = 0.84). Results show that personalized prediction of transition in CHR is potentially feasible on a global scale. New oxycodone prescriptions were most common among surgical and anesthesia/pain management, and new tramadol prescriptions were most common in primary care. The activities of 14 different ELQs were assessed against B. besnoiti tachyzoites grown in human foreskin fibroblasts (HFF) by quantitative real time PCR. The values for 50% proliferation inhibition (IC50) of five ELQs were determined in a 3-days growth assay after an initial screen of 12 ELQs at 0.01, 0.1, and 1 μM. The IC50s of ELQ-121, -136, and -316 were 0.49, 2.36, and 7.97 nM, respectively. The IC50s of ELQs tested against B. besnoiti were higher than IC50s previously observed for P. falciparum and T. gondii. However, the B. besnoiti cytochrome b sequence and the predicted Qo and Qi ELQ binding sites in the Toxoplasma, Neospora, and Besnoitia cytochrome b are virtually identical, suggesting that the differences in ELQ susceptibility are not due to variations in the substrate binding sites. TEM of ELQ-treated parasites primarily demonstrated alterations within the parasite mitochondrion, profound thickening of the nuclear membrane, as well as increased vacuolization within the tachyzoite cytoplasm. Long-term treatment assays of intracellular B. besnoiti with ELQs for up to 20 days followed by the release of drug pressure caused a substantial delay in parasite growth and proliferation while ELQs were present, but parasite proliferation resumed days after ELQs were removed. Interestingly, structural alterations persisted after ELQ removal and parasite proliferation was slowed. These findings provide a basis for further in vivo studies of ELQs as therapeutic options against B. besnoiti infection. SFE extract showed good antioxidant properties with high polyphenol content (13.06 mg GAE/g), radical scavenging activity (3.12 mg/ml), reducing power (38.68 mg/mL EC50). In this study, we first investigated the biological characteristics and virulence of these two clonal strains including motility, metabolism and virulence in cells and mouse model. The results demonstrated the ST1 strains exhibited motility, wide metabolic activity and hypervirulence, whereas the ST2 strains showed non-motility, relative lower metabolic activity and virulence. Considering the transmissible ability from wild rodents and pikas to ecological environment, the L. ivanovii subsp. ivanovii with potential pathogenicity to humans and ruminants should be monitored. The study examined the effect of diet including grape seed meal (GSM) with its mixture of bioactive compounds on the large intestine microbiota and short-chain fatty acid synthesis in weaned piglets treated with dextran sodium sulfate (DSS) as a model for inflammatory bowel diseases. Twenty-two piglets were included in four experimental groups based on their diet control, DSS (1 g/kg/b.w.+control diet), GSM (8% grape seed meal inclusion in control diet), and DSS+GSM (1 g/kg/b.w., 8% grape seed meal in control diet). After 30 days, the colon content was isolated and used for microbiota sequencing on an Illumina MiSeq platform. QIIME 1.9.1 pipeline was used to process the raw sequences. Both GSM and DSS alone and in combination affected the diversity indices and FirmicutesBacteroidetes ratio, with significantly higher values in the DSS-afflicted piglets for Proteobacteria phylum, Roseburia, Megasphera and CF231 genus, and lower values for Lactobacillus. GSM with high-fiber, polyphenol and polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) content increased the production of butyrate and isobutyrate, stimulated the growth of beneficial genera like Prevotella and Megasphaera, while countering the relative abundance of Roseburia, reducing it to half of the DSS value and contributing to the management of the DSS effects. These symptoms, which can range from mild to severe, have been reported throughout the literature in both prospective and population-based studies in Lyme disease endemic regions. The etiology of these symptoms is unknown, however several illness-causing mechanisms have been hypothesized, including microbial persistence, host immune dysregulation through inflammatory or secondary autoimmune pathways, or altered neural networks, as in central sensitization. Evaluation and characterization of persistent symptoms in Lyme disease is complicated by potential independent, repeat exposures to B. burgdorferi, as well as the potential for co-morbid diseases with overlapping symptom profiles. Antibody testing for B. burgdorferi is an insensitive measure after treatment, and no other FDA-approved tests currently exist.

The study examined the effect of diet including grape seed meal (GSM) with its mixture of bioactive compounds on the large intestine microbiota and short-chain fatty acid synthesis in weaned piglets treated with dextran sodium sulfate (DSS) as a model for inflammatory bowel diseases. Twenty-two piglets were included in four experimental groups based on their diet control, DSS (1 g/kg/b.w.+control diet), GSM (8% grape seed meal inclusion in control diet), and DSS+GSM (1 g/kg/b.w., 8% grape seed meal in control diet). After 30 days, the colon content was isolated and used for microbiota sequencing on an Illumina MiSeq platform. QIIME 1.9.1 pipeline was used to process the raw sequences. Both GSM and DSS alone and in combination affected the diversity indices and FirmicutesBacteroidetes ratio, with significantly higher values in the DSS-afflicted piglets for Proteobacteria phylum, Roseburia, Megasphera and CF231 genus, and lower values for Lactobacillus. GSM with high-fiber, polyphenol and polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) content increased the production of butyrate and isobutyrate, stimulated the growth of beneficial genera like Prevotella and Megasphaera, while countering the relative abundance of Roseburia, reducing it to half of the DSS value and contributing to the management of the DSS effects. Despite the growing social interest in green products, companies often find it difficult to find effective strategies to induce consumers to purchase green products or engage in other environmentally friendly behaviors. To address this situation, we examined the favorable or unfavorable effects of positive and negative message frames on consumers' willingness to consume green products in different psychological distance contexts. Through two Studies, we found that the positive information framework played a more pronounced role in context when consumers were in closer spatial distances. More importantly, we found that the emotional factors of fear and hope were intrinsic causes of this phenomenon. Correspondingly, the negative information framework played a better facilitating role in context with farther spatial distance, while shame and pride were the emotions responsible for this effect. Finally, we discuss the theoretical and managerial implications of our work, as well as its limitations and future research directions.
This study took users of short-form mobile videos as research participants to explore the role of their boredom proneness in mediating the relationship between the use of mobile social media (UMSM) and subjective well-being (SWB).
A sample of 656 users was evaluated by the Problematic Mobile Social Media Usage Assessment Questionnaire, General Well-Being Schedule, and Boredom Proneness Scale.
Firstly, significant interactions were found between monthly living expenses and the UMSM of the participants, which were recognized as factors affecting SWB. Secondly, the level of living expenses had little effect on the high-level and low-level groups of the UMSM but imposed a significant impact on the medium-level group. Thirdly, the UMSM showed an influence that could positively predict boredom; both the UMSM and boredom demonstrated a negative predictive effect on SWB.

To explore the conceptual distinctness and relatedness of these motives, we conducted a semantic categorization task. Here, participants were to assign provided words to one of the motives. By applying principal component analysis to the categorization assignments we represent the semantic inter-relations of these motives on a two-dimensional space, a "semantic atlas." This atlas suggests that, while care and affiliation are conceptually close, affiliation is closer to threat avoidance (or fear); opposite to these motives we find achievement, consumption and power, with the latter lying closer to threat approach (or anger). In a second study, we asked participants to rate how well the motive-specific words obtained in the first study described their currently experienced feelings. We find that semantically close motives are also more likely to be experienced together, that is, we replicate most of the semantic relations in the "subjective atlas." We discuss our findings in comparison to other multi-dimensional models of motivation, which show clear similarities. In addition to these motivational atlases, we provide a database of motive-specific words, together with the valence and arousal scores. Candidate genes of neuromuscular junction (NMJ) pathway increased risk of frailty, but the extent and whether can be offset by exercises was unclear. The aim of this study was to investigate the association between aerobic exercises and incident frailty regardless of NMJ pathway-related genetic risk.
A cohort study on participants from Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey was conducted from 2008 to 2011. A total of 7006 participants (mean age of 80.6±10.3years) without frailty at baseline were interviewed to record aerobic exercise status, and 4053 individuals among them submitted saliva samples. NMJ pathway-related genes were genotyped and weighted genetic risk scores were constructed.
During a median follow-up of 3.1years (19634 person-years), there were 1345 cases (19.2%) of incident frailty. Persistent aerobic exercises were associated with a 26% lesser frailty risk [adjusted hazard ratio (HR)=0.74, 95% confidence interval (CI)=0.64-0.85]. This association was stronger in a subgroup of 1552 longevous participants (age between 90 and 111years, adjusted HR=0.72, 95% CI=0.60-0.87). High genetic risk was associated with a 35% increased risk of frailty (adjusted HR=1.35, 95% CI=1.16-1.58). Of the participants with high genetic risk and no persistent aerobic exercises, there was a 59% increased risk of frailty (adjusted HR=1.59, 95% CI=1.20-2.09). HRs for the risk of frailty increased from the low genetic risk with persistent aerobic exercise to high genetic risk without persistent aerobic exercise (P trend <0.001).

Even though it is structurally highly similar to the classical HLA class Ia genes, it is less diverse and only 45 alleles and 12 proteins were known in December 2019 (IPD-IMGT/HLA, release 3.38.0). Since 2017, we have genotyped over 3 million voluntary stem cell donors for HLA-E by sequencing the most relevant allele-determining bases of exons 2 and 3. As expected, most donors harbor the two predominant alleles HLA-E*0101 and/or HLA-E*0103. However, in 1666 (0.05%) of our samples we detected 345 distinct novel HLA-E sequences. The most frequent one was identified in 162 samples and has by now been named HLA-E*01114. To characterize these novel alleles in full-length, we used both short-read Illumina and long-read PacBio sequencing to obtain fully phased and highly accurate sequences. This resulted in 234 submissions to IPD-IMGT/HLA comprising 170 novel HLA-E alleles, which encode for 93 novel HLA-E proteins, as well as 64 confirmations or sequence extensions. Consequently, the number of HLA-E alleles in the database (release 3.42.0) has now increased to 256 HLA-E alleles and 110 HLA-E proteins.
Serious bacterial infections (SBI) are major causes of mortality and morbidity in children. The aim of this study was to determine the accuracy of the immature granulocyte (IG) percentage in predicting SBI.
Patients admitted to the pediatric emergency department with fever were divided into two groups with SBI and with non-SBI. White blood cell (WBC) count, absolute neutrophil count (ANC), C-reactive protein (CRP), and the percentage of IG value were recorded, and their accuracy in predicting SBI was evaluated.
Sixty-one (14.3%) patients fell into the SBI group and 367 (85.7%) were with non-SBI. Mean IG percentage among SBI patients was 0.84±1.21 and 0.27±0.20 for with non-SBI patients (P=.001). Based on disease, the highest IG percentage was found in patients diagnosed with sepsis (IG 3.7±3.5%) and with bacterial meningitis (IG 1.6±1.3%). The area under the curve (AUC) of IG percentage to predict SBI was 0.83 with 95% confidence interval (CI) [0.78-0.88]; WBC was 0.76 (95% CI 0.70-0.83); ANC was 0.73 (95% CI 0.67-0.80), and CRP was 0.79 (95% CI 0.73-0.85). When infection markers were compared to the most appropriate cut-off values in predicting SBI, IG percentage showed the highest sensitivity and specificity. When the cut-off value was determined as >0.35 for IG percentage, sensitivity was 75.4% and specificity was 76.6% in predicting SBI.

Cancer survivorship is frequently associated with severe late effects. However, research into pediatric cancer survivors on late effects in motor ability, physical self-concept and their relationship to quality of life is limited.
Using multiple regression analyses, 78 pediatric cancer survivors and 56 typically developing children were compared in motor ability, physical self-concept and health-related quality of life. In addition, mediational multi-group analyses between motor ability (independent variable), physical self-concept (mediator) and quality of life (dependent variable) were calculated.
Pediatric cancer survivors had a lower motor ability (g
=0.863), a lower physical self-concept with regard to several scales of the PSDQ-S (g
=0.318-0.764) and a higher relative risk for a below average quality of life than controls (RR=1.44). Children with a history of cancer involving the central nervous system showed poorer motor ability compared to those without central nervous system involvement (g
