Six weeks after giving birth, participants from both groups individually completed the Edinburg Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS), the Postpartum Bonding Questionnaire (PBQ) and the Coping Strategies Inventory (CSI) using an online platform. Results No differences were found regarding PPD and bonding in either groups. Results A total of 285 CRS patients were included 173 never smokers, 85 former smokers, and 27 current smokers. When compared with former smokers, current smokers demonstrated increased basement membrane thickening (88.9% vs 67.1%, P less then .020). in English, Portuguese A endometriose é uma doença crónica caracterizada pela presença de endométrio funcional fora da cavidade uterina que afeta aproximadamente 10% das mulheres em idade reprodutiva. A endometriose cutânea com localização habitual na parede abdominal é uma manifestação rara da doença. Apresenta-se o caso de uma mulher jovem nulípara com um nódulo umbilical doloroso e de crescimento recente com placa dolorosa subcutânea periumbilical, sem outra sintomatologia associada. A anamnese revelou dois episódios semelhantes nos últimos dois anos. Foi realizada biópsia cutânea da lesão e o exame anatomopatológico foi compatível com endometriose. Adultos com dor crónica medicados com opióides, seguidos num hospital português de grande dimensão, foram convidados a completar a versão traduzida. Recurso a estatística descritiva, alfa de Cronbach, correlações inter-item, item-total, intra-classe, e análise de componentes principais. Resultados A tradução decorreu conforme planeado e a amostra de validação foi de 98 doentes (mediana de idades = 62,5 anos). Relativamente à consistência interna, alfa Cronbach global = 0,778, correlações item-total dos itens > 0,20 (quatro exceções), e coeficiente de correlação intra-classe = 0,90 (entre teste e reteste). Relativamente à validade, os 17 itens apresentaram um índice de validade de conteúdo > 0,80. Extraíram-se seis componentes principais, que explicaram 66,3% da variância. Discussão A versão portuguesa da Escala de Uso Indevido de Opióides foi adequadamente traduzida, adaptada e validada; demonstrando boa qualidade relativamente à confiabilidade e validade. Este é o primeiro instrumento para rastrear comportamentos aberrantes, relativos ao uso de opióides em portugueses com dor crónica. Consequentemente, ajudará e promoverá a identificação do uso indevido de opióides nestes doentes. This study examined the feasibility, acceptability, and various stress-related outcomes from pre- to post-treatment of a pilot, single-arm trial of a 6-week mindfulness-based intervention (FOCUS) for stress management. Caregivers (N = 21; 76% female; mean age = 57.43) were enrolled prior to patient transplant and received FOCUS during the first 90 days post-transplant. Findings indicated that FOCUS was highly feasible and acceptable (e.g., 71% attended at least four of six sessions; 100% reported using the skills learned at follow-up; high treatment engagement). This study examined the feasibility, acceptability, and various stress-related outcomes from pre- to post-treatment of a pilot, single-arm trial of a 6-week mindfulness-based intervention (FOCUS) for stress management. Caregivers (N = 21; 76% female; mean age = 57.43) were enrolled prior to patient transplant and received FOCUS during the first 90 days post-transplant. Findings indicated that FOCUS was highly feasible and acceptable (e.g., 71% attended at least four of six sessions; 100% reported using the skills learned at follow-up; high treatment engagement). However, since 2001, the American Diabetes Association has established postprandial glucose (PPG) as an independent contributor to both HbA1c and diabetes complications, and increasing evidence suggests that all three glycemic parameters of HbA1c, FPG, and postprandial glucose (PPG) are independently important. Objectives The objective of this review was to comprehensively summarize the literature on the effects of nutritional strategies incorporating glycemic index (GI)/glycemic load (GL) on the postprandial hyperglycemia in people with T2D, as well as to provide recommendations for effective dietary strategies addressing both the dietary glycemic index and load in clinical practice. Design An advanced Pubmed search was conducted. A total of 10 randomized controlled studies met the inclusion criteria. Six studies compared low-GI with higher GI meals, three included studies that compared reduced carbohydrate content with higher carbohydrate content, and one study compared meals of low-GI (with high or low fiber) with meals of higher GI (with high or low fiber). Results Most of the clinical trials resulted in significant improvement (p less then 0.05) of postprandial hyperglycemia. Conclusions Either reducing the amount of carbohydrate in a meal or increasing consumption of soluble fiber has a favorable effect on postprandial glucose excursions.Owing to the high demand for drone operation in high-elevation masked areas, it is necessary to develop a more effective method of transmitting and applying Satellite-Based Augmentation System (SBAS) messages for drones. This study proposes an onboard module including correction conversion, integrity information calculation, and fast initialization requests, which can enable the application of an online SBAS to drone operation. The proposed system not only improves the position accuracy with timely and proper protection levels in an open sky, but also reduces the initialization time from 70-100 s to 1 s, enabling a drone of short endurance to perform its mission successfully. The study used archived serum samples (n = 3269) from the 2015 Ethiopian National Micronutrient Survey (ENMS). The ENMS was a cross-sectional survey of young and school-age children, women and men. Serum Se concentration was measured using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICPMS). The national median (Q1, Q3) serum Se concentration was 87.7 (56.7, 123.0) μg L-1. Serum Se concentration differed between regions, ranging from a median (Q1, Q3) of 54.6 (43.1, 66.3) µg L-1 in the Benishangul-Gumuz Region to 122.0 (105, 141) µg L-1 in the Southern Nations, Nationalities, and Peoples' Region and the Afar Region. Overall, 35.5% of the population were Se deficient, defined as serum Se less then 70 µg L-1. This proposal is designed also considering the Privacy by Design option. As a proof of application case, an implementation was carried out regarding the logistics of the delivery of industrial components in the construction sector, where different stakeholders may benefit from shared knowledge under the proposed architecture.

KGaA, Weinheim.BACKGROUND & AIMS The World Health Organization's hepatitis C virus (HCV) elimination strategy recognizes the need for interventions that identify populations most affected by infection. The emergency department (ED) has been suggested as a setting for HCV screening. The study objective was to explore the health and economic impact of HCV screening in the ED setting. METHODS We used a microsimulation model to conduct a cost-utility analysis evaluating two ED setting-specific strategies no screening, and screening and subsequent treatment. Strategies were examined for two populations (1) the general ED patient population; and (2) ED patients born between 1945-1975. The analysis was conducted from a healthcare payer perspective over a lifetime time horizon. A reference and high ED HCV seroprevalence measure were examined in the Canadian healthcare setting. US costs of chronic infection were used for a scenario analysis of screening in the US healthcare setting. RESULTS For birth cohort screening, in comparison to no screening, one liver-related death was averted for every 760 and 123 persons screened for the reference and high seroprevalence measures. For general population screening, one liver-related death was averted for every 831 and 147 persons screened for the reference and high seroprevalence measures. In comparison to no screening, birth cohort screening was cost-effective at CAN$25,584/quality-adjusted life year (QALY) and US$42,615/QALY. General population screening was cost-effective at CAN$19,733/QALY and US$32,187/QALY. CONCLUSIONS ED screening may represent a cost-effective component of population-based strategies to eliminate HCV. METHODS Fifty-five female rats were randomly assigned to the following treatment groups the OVX group, the sham-operated (sham) group, and groups treated with cnidium lactone at different doses (10 mg/kg/d, 20 mg/kg/d, 30 mg/kg/d). Treatments were administered for 60 days. Search Tool for Interacting Chemicals (STITCH, http//stitch.embl.de/) was used to identify the interaction between cnidium lactone and target proteins. Bone mineral density (BMD), mechanical strength, serum osteoblastic and osteoclastic markers, and hematoxylin-eosin (HE) staining of the distal femur were evaluated. Moreover, western blot analyses were also performed to evaluate the effect of cnidium lactone on the ERα/BMP-2/Smad signaling pathway. RESULTS Cnidium lactone treatment was associated with an increase in the BMD of the distal femur compared with that of the OVX group. Moreover, cnidium lactone significantly increased biomechanical properties in a dose-dependent manner compared with those of the OVX group (P less then 0.05). Treatment with cnidium lactone significantly enhanced the BMP-2/Smad signaling pathway by upregulating the expression of ERα, BMP-2, p-Smad1 and p-Smad4. Cnidium lactone treatment improved the microstructure of trabecular bone in the distal femurs of OVX rats, as shown by HE staining. All rights reserved.PURPOSE To investigate the feasibility of reducing the healing time of maxillary sinus floor elevation (MSFE) by a two-stage approach using deproteinized bovine bone mineral (DBBM) alone, based on clinical, histomorphometric, and microradiographic evaluations. MATERIALS AND METHODS Twenty consecutive cases with an atrophic posterior edentulous maxilla were randomly assigned to two groups at a ratio of 11. The lateral window approach to MSFE with DBBM alone was followed by an 8-month bone-healing period in the control group compared to 5 months in the test group. During implant placement, bone biopsies were harvested from implant osteotomy sites for micro-computed tomography (CT), histological, and histomorphometric evaluations. Cone beam CT (CBCT) scans were performed before and immediately after MSFE and after the bone-healing periods. The implant stability quotient (ISQ) was measured sequentially at implant placement and 1, 3, and 6 months thereafter. RESULTS The histomorphometric and microradiographic results showed no significant differences in new bone formation on the augmented sinus floor between the two groups (all Ps > .05), except that trabecular thickness was significantly reduced and trabecular separation significantly increased in the test group (both Ps .05). KGaA, Weinheim.BACKGROUND & AIMS The World Health Organization's hepatitis C virus (HCV) elimination strategy recognizes the need for interventions that identify populations most affected by infection. The emergency department (ED) has been suggested as a setting for HCV screening. The study objective was to explore the health and economic impact of HCV screening in the ED setting. METHODS We used a microsimulation model to conduct a cost-utility analysis evaluating two ED setting-specific strategies no screening, and screening and subsequent treatment. Strategies were examined for two populations (1) the general ED patient population; and (2) ED patients born between 1945-1975. The analysis was conducted from a healthcare payer perspective over a lifetime time horizon. A reference and high ED HCV seroprevalence measure were examined in the Canadian healthcare setting. US costs of chronic infection were used for a scenario analysis of screening in the US healthcare setting. RESULTS For birth cohort screening, in comparison to no screening, one liver-related death was averted for every 760 and 123 persons screened for the reference and high seroprevalence measures. For general population screening, one liver-related death was averted for every 831 and 147 persons screened for the reference and high seroprevalence measures. In comparison to no screening, birth cohort screening was cost-effective at CAN$25,584/quality-adjusted life year (QALY) and US$42,615/QALY. General population screening was cost-effective at CAN$19,733/QALY and US$32,187/QALY. CONCLUSIONS ED screening may represent a cost-effective component of population-based strategies to eliminate HCV. All rights reserved.BACKGROUND The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of cnidium lactone on OVX-induced bone loss and determine whether it exerts its effects by mediating the estrogen receptor-α (ERα)/bone morphogenetic protein-2 (BMP-2)/Smad signaling pathways. METHODS Fifty-five female rats were randomly assigned to the following treatment groups the OVX group, the sham-operated (sham) group, and groups treated with cnidium lactone at different doses (10 mg/kg/d, 20 mg/kg/d, 30 mg/kg/d). Treatments were administered for 60 days. Search Tool for Interacting Chemicals (STITCH, http//stitch.embl.de/) was used to identify the interaction between cnidium lactone and target proteins. Bone mineral density (BMD), mechanical strength, serum osteoblastic and osteoclastic markers, and hematoxylin-eosin (HE) staining of the distal femur were evaluated. Moreover, western blot analyses were also performed to evaluate the effect of cnidium lactone on the ERα/BMP-2/Smad signaling pathway. RESULTS Cnidium lactone treatment was associated with an increase in the BMD of the distal femur compared with that of the OVX group. Moreover, cnidium lactone significantly increased biomechanical properties in a dose-dependent manner compared with those of the OVX group (P less then 0.05). Treatment with cnidium lactone significantly enhanced the BMP-2/Smad signaling pathway by upregulating the expression of ERα, BMP-2, p-Smad1 and p-Smad4. Cnidium lactone treatment improved the microstructure of trabecular bone in the distal femurs of OVX rats, as shown by HE staining. CONCLUSIONS Cnidium lactone exerts potent antiosteoporotic activity in ovariectomized mice, and the underlying molecular mechanism may be related to the ERα/BMP-2/Smad signaling pathways. All rights reserved.PURPOSE To investigate the feasibility of reducing the healing time of maxillary sinus floor elevation (MSFE) by a two-stage approach using deproteinized bovine bone mineral (DBBM) alone, based on clinical, histomorphometric, and microradiographic evaluations. MATERIALS AND METHODS Twenty consecutive cases with an atrophic posterior edentulous maxilla were randomly assigned to two groups at a ratio of 11. The lateral window approach to MSFE with DBBM alone was followed by an 8-month bone-healing period in the control group compared to 5 months in the test group. During implant placement, bone biopsies were harvested from implant osteotomy sites for micro-computed tomography (CT), histological, and histomorphometric evaluations. Cone beam CT (CBCT) scans were performed before and immediately after MSFE and after the bone-healing periods. The implant stability quotient (ISQ) was measured sequentially at implant placement and 1, 3, and 6 months thereafter. RESULTS The histomorphometric and microradiographic results showed no significant differences in new bone formation on the augmented sinus floor between the two groups (all Ps > .05), except that trabecular thickness was significantly reduced and trabecular separation significantly increased in the test group (both Ps .05). In the context of electron dynamics simulations, when the charge density of a molecule is subject to a perturbation in the form of a short electric field pulse, density fluctuations develop in time. In the absence of dissipation, these oscillations continue indefinitely, reflecting the resonances of the electronic system; as a matter of fact, from the Fourier transform of the time dependent dipole arising from them, the absorption spectrum of the molecule can be calculated. Since these oscillations are the result of the electrons moving through the molecular structrure, it seems plausible that they carry information on the transport properties of the system. This is the idea explored in the present article for the case of conjugated polymers. Specifically, we depart from a nonequilibrium state with the charge concentrated on the ends of the molecule, and estimate the currents flowing **** and forth during the evolution of electron dynamics simulations. Here, utilizing large-scale 16S rRNA gene data generated from 211 activated sludge samples collected from 15 cities across China, we show activated sludge microbes, whose growth and metabolism can be regulated followed with the metabolic theory of ecology with an apparent Ea value (apparent activation energy) of 0.08 eV. WWTPs at a lower latitude tend to harbor a more diverse array of microorganisms. In agreement with the general understanding, the activated sludge microbial assembly was mainly driven by deterministic processes and the mean annual temperature was identified as the most important factor affecting the microbial community structure. The treatment process types with similar microbial growth types and functions had a distinct impact on the activated sludge microbial community structure only when WWTPs were located near each other and received similar influent. Overall, these findings provide us with a deeper understanding of activated sludge microbial communities from an ecological perspective. Moreover, these findings suggest that, for a given set of performance characteristics (e.g., combined nitrification, denitrification, and phosphorus removal), it may be difficult to employ common engineering levers to control additional aspects of community structure due to the influence of natural environmental factors.Herbicides are a key element in agriculture but they do cause environmental problems and natural alternatives are being sought. The phytotoxicity of the extract was assessed in the wheat coleoptile assay on seeds of troublesome weeds and on Anadenanthera colubrina, a tree species used in ecological restoration programs. The ethyl acetate extract showed the highest activity, and the most affected weeds were E. crus-galli, M. maximus, and A. viridis with the latter weed more affected by the extract than by the herbicide Logran. Microscopic ultrastructural analysis of A. colubrina roots indicated possible signals of cell death. Seven compounds were identified in the ethyl acetate extract of which one diterpene and four saponins are new. Six of these compounds were tested in the wheat coleoptile bioassay. The most active were diterpene 1 and saponins 2, 3, and 6. The nanosensor is composed of a Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET) pair, the outer membrane-anchored upconversion nanoparticle (UCNP), and the membrane-embedded dipicrylamine (DPA). The negative charge of DPA allows membrane potential fluctuation to affect the distance between the DPA and UCNP, therefore changing the FRET efficiency. Consequently, the emission intensity of the nanosensor can report the membrane potential. Using the nanosensor, we monitor not only electrically evoked changes in the membrane potential of cultured cells but also sensory responses of neurons in intact zebrafish and brain state-modulated subthreshold activities of cortical neurons in intact ****.

Within this work, the resistance mechanisms of P. putida GS1 were investigated using selected monoterpenoid-hypertolerant mutants. Most of the mutations were found in efflux pump promoter regions or associated transcription factors. Surprisingly, while for the tested monoterpenoid alcohols, ketone, and ether high efflux pump expression increased monoterpenoid tolerance, it reduced the tolerance against geranic acid. However, an increase of geranic acid tolerance could be gained by a mutation in an efflux pump component. It was also found that increased monoterpenoid tolerance can counteract efficient biotransformation ability, indicating the need for a fine-tuned and knowledge-based tolerance improvement for production strain development.Key points• Altered monoterpenoid tolerance mainly related to altered activity of efflux pumps.• Increased tolerance to geranic acid surprisingly caused by decreased export activity. • Reduction of export activity can be beneficial for biotechnological conversions.The present work reports a newly developed square wave anodic stripping voltammetry (SWASV) methodology using novel gold nanostar-modified screen-printed carbon electrodes (AuNS/SPCE) and modified Britton-Robinson buffer (mBRB) for simultaneous detection of trace cadmium(II), arsenic(III), and selenium(IV). During individual and simultaneous detection, Cd2+, As3+, and Se4+ exhibited well-separated SWASV peaks at approximately - 0.48, - 0.09, and 0.65 V, respectively (versus Ag/AgCl reference electrode), which enabled a highly selective detection of the three analytes. Electrochemical impedance spectrum tests showed a significant decrease in charge transfer resistance with the AuNS/SPCE (0.8 kΩ) compared with bare SPCE (2.4 kΩ). Cyclic voltammetry experiments showed a significant increase in electroactive surface area with electrode modification. The low charge transfer resistance and high electroactive surface area contributed to the high sensitivity for Cd2+ (0.0767 μA (0.225 μg L-1)-1), As3+ (0.2213 μA (μg L-1)-1), and Se4+ (μA (μg L-1)-1). The three analytes had linear stripping responses over the concentration range of 0 to 100 μg L-1, with the obtained LoD for Cd2+, As3+, and Se4+ of 1.6, 0.8, and 1.6 μg L-1, respectively. In comparison with individual detection, the simultaneous detection of As3+ and Se4+ showed peak height reductions of 40.8% and 42.7%, respectively. This result was associated with the possible formation of electrochemically inactive arsenic triselenide (As2Se3) during the preconcentration step. Surface water analysis resulted in average percent recoveries of 109% for Cd2+, 93% for As3+, and 92% for Se4+, indicating the proposed method is accurate and reliable for the simultaneous detection of Cd2+, As3+, and Se4+ in real water samples. Pohl initially described its premise. This article will discuss its applications and describe the various configurations of generating an isomotive force. Since H.A. Pohl introduced the theory of isoDEP, numerous authors have implemented isoDEP as a tool for the manipulation, sorting, separation, and characterization of polarizable particles without the need for biochemical labels or other bioengineered tagging. The growing field of microfluidics and electrokinetics has renewed interest in isoDEP, particularly for analytical characterization or separation of particles. During individual and simultaneous detection, Cd2+, As3+, and Se4+ exhibited well-separated SWASV peaks at approximately - 0.48, - 0.09, and 0.65 V, respectively (versus Ag/AgCl reference electrode), which enabled a highly selective detection of the three analytes. Electrochemical impedance spectrum tests showed a significant decrease in charge transfer resistance with the AuNS/SPCE (0.8 kΩ) compared with bare SPCE (2.4 kΩ). Cyclic voltammetry experiments showed a significant increase in electroactive surface area with electrode modification. The low charge transfer resistance and high electroactive surface area contributed to the high sensitivity for Cd2+ (0.0767 μA (0.225 μg L-1)-1), As3+ (0.2213 μA (μg L-1)-1), and Se4+ (μA (μg L-1)-1). The three analytes had linear stripping responses over the concentration range of 0 to 100 μg L-1, with the obtained LoD for Cd2+, As3+, and Se4+ of 1.6, 0.8, and 1.6 μg L-1, respectively. In comparison with individual detection, the simultaneous detection of As3+ and Se4+ showed peak height reductions of 40.8% and 42.7%, respectively. This result was associated with the possible formation of electrochemically inactive arsenic triselenide (As2Se3) during the preconcentration step. Surface water analysis resulted in average percent recoveries of 109% for Cd2+, 93% for As3+, and 92% for Se4+, indicating the proposed method is accurate and reliable for the simultaneous detection of Cd2+, As3+, and Se4+ in real water samples. Manual material handling is common in supermarkets and may be a contributing factor to the high prevalence of work-related musculoskeletal disorders, particularly to the lower ****. This cross-sectional study applied state-of-the-art musculoskeletal models driven by kinematic data obtained in two supermarkets to estimate joint reaction forces in the knees, shoulders and lumbar spine under dynamic lifting conditions. Based on 1479 lifts from 15 workers, 8 tasks for which the compression or shear forces in the L5-S1 joint exceeded well-known biomechanical tolerance limits were identified. High shoulder forces were associated with lifting relatively heavy merchandise to high shelves, while the weight of the handled merchandise was the main predictor of high knee forces. The study addressed well-known limitations associated with traditional lifting analysis tools and was the first to present a detailed analysis of the biomechanical loads during manual material handling tasks in the supermarket sector based on field measurements.
Colorectal cancer (CRC) is a common malignant tumor of digestive tract which has high incidence and mortality rates. Accurate prognosis prediction of CRC patients is pivotal to reduce the mortality and disease burden.
In this study, we comprehensively analyzed the gene expression and methylation data of CRC samples from The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA). Differential expression genes (DEGs) and methylation CpGs (DMCs) in tumor tissues compared with adjacent normal tissues of CRC were first identified. Functional enrichment analysis of DEGs and DMCs was performed by Database for Annotation, Visualization and Integrated Discovery (DAVID). Spearman correlation analysis was used to screen DMCs that negatively correlated with gene expressions which were subsequently applied to sure independence screening (SIS) along with stepwise regression for screening optimal CpGs for CRC prognosis prediction model construction by Cox regression analysis.
We identified a total of 1774 DEGs (663 upregulated and 1111 downregulated) and 11,975 DMCs (7385 hypermethylated and 4590 hypomethylated) in CRC tumor samples compared with adjacent normal samples. The hypermethylated loci were mainly located on CpG island, while the hypomethylated loci were mainly located on N-shore. Spearman correlation analysis screened 321 DMCs that negatively correlated with expressions of their annotated genes. Cox regression model consist of 10 CpGs was finally established which could effectively stratified CRC patients that exhibited significantly different overall survival probability independent of age, gender, and pathological staging.

Fear of having a seizure called anticipatory anxiety of epileptic seizure (AAS), constitutes a daily life burden but has been rarely studied. Our aim was to assess the prevalence and the determining factors of AAS in patients with drug-resistant focal epilepsy, a dimension that has not been thoroughly investigated before.
We conducted an observational, prospective study enrolling patients with drug-resistant focal epilepsy. The psychiatric assessment aimed to evaluate psychiatric comorbidities, trauma history, and quality of life using hetero-evaluation and self-assessment tools. Dimensions of anxiety specifically related to epilepsy (peri-and-inter-ictal) were explored as exhaustively as possible.
AAS was found in 53 % of the 87 patients. We compared the two groups of patients with or without AAS. Patients with AAS had a significantly shorter duration of epilepsy (p = 0.04). There was no difference between groups with respect to psychiatric disorders, except for cannabis dependence, more frequent in patients with AAS (p = 0.02). Compared to patients without AAS, those with AAS presented more subjective ictal anxiety (p = 0.0003) and postictal anxiety (p = 0.02), were more likely to avoid outdoor social situations due to seizure fear (p = 0.001), and had a poorer quality of life (QOLIE emotional well-being; p = 0.03). Additionally, they had experienced more traumatic events in their lifetime (p = 0.005) and reported more frequently a feeling of being unsafe during their seizures (p = 0.00002).

We investigated the relationship between long-term exposure to residential green space and non-accidental and cardio-respiratory mortality. We linked the Belgian 2001 census to population and mortality register follow-up data (2001-2011) among adults aged 30years and older residing in the five largest urban areas in Belgium (n=2,185,170 and mean follow-up time 9.4years). Residential addresses were available at baseline. Retinal pigment epithelial (RPE) cells occupy the outer layer of the retina and perform various biological functions. Oxidative damage to RPE cells is a major risk factor for retinal degeneration that ultimately leads to vision loss. In this study, we investigated the role of spermidine in a hydrogen peroxide (H2O2)-induced oxidative stress model using human RPE cells. Our findings showed that 300 μM H2O2 increased cytotoxicity, apoptosis, and cell cycle arrest in the G2/M phase, whereas these effects were markedly suppressed by 10 μM spermidine. Furthermore, spermidine significantly reduced H2O2-induced mitochondrial dysfunction including mitochondrial membrane potential and mitochondrial activity. Although spermidine displays antioxidant properties, the generation of intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) upon H2O2 insult was not regulated by spermidine. Spermidine did suppress the increase in cytosolic Ca2+ levels resulting from endoplasmic reticulum stress in H2O2-stimulated human RPE cells. Treatment with a cytosolic Ca2+ chelator markedly reversed H2O2-induced cellular dysfunction. Overall, spermidine protected against H2O2-induced cellular damage by blocking the increase of intracellular Ca2+ independently of ROS. These results suggest that spermidine protects RPE cells from oxidative stress, which could be a useful treatment for retinal diseases.In the Nordic countries (Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden), the Urban Green Infrastructure (UGI) has been traditionally targeted at reducing flood risk. However, other Ecosystem Services (ES) became increasingly relevant in response to the challenges of urbanization and climate change. In total, 90 scientific articles addressing ES considered crucial contributions to the quality of life in cities are reviewed. These are classified as (1) regulating ES that minimize hazards such as heat, floods, air pollution and noise, and (2) cultural ES that promote well-being and health. We conclude that the planning and design of UGI should balance both the provision of ES and their side effects and disservices, aspects that seem to have been only marginally investigated. Climate-sensitive planning practices are critical to guarantee that seasonal climate variability is accounted for at high-latitude regions. Nevertheless, diverging and seemingly inconsistent findings, together with gaps in the understanding of long-term effects, create obstacles for practitioners. Additionally, the limited involvement of end users points to a need of better engagement and communication, which in overall call for more collaborative research. Close relationships and interactions among different ES provided by urban greenery were found, yet few studies attempted an integrated evaluation. We argue that promoting interdisciplinary studies is fundamental to attain a holistic understanding of how plant traits affect the resulting ES; of the synergies between biophysical, physiological and psychological processes; and of the potential disservices of UGI, specifically in Nordic cities.

The two groups were compared regarding different variables pretreatment visual acuity, age, gender, gross tumor volume (GTV), follow up (FU) time, tumor localization, and maximal re cases an improvement of the ophthalmic status with low morbidity and excellent tumor control in our series and the meta analysis. Patients with a favorable outcome had in all analysis a significantly higher visual acuity before treatment start. Therefore, we advocate using fSRT as early as possible before vision deterioration occurs.

Twelve weeks of tocilizumab administration (in combination with exercise training) trend wise enhanced the decrease in circulating leptin levels (-2.7 ± 8.2% in the placebo vs. -20.6 ± 5.6% in tocilizumab, p = 0.08) and significantly enhanced the increase in circulating adiponectin (3.4 ± 3.7% in the placebo vs. 27.0 ± 6.6% in tocilizumab, p = 0.01). In addition, circulating adiponectin levels were negatively correlated with the homeostatic model assessment of insulin resistance (HOMA-IR), indicating that increased adiponectin levels positively affect insulin sensitivity in people with obesity. In conclusion, IL-6 receptor blockade increases circulating adiponectin levels in people with obesity.

Specific reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction assays disclosed the presence of AcV-1 in plants of four kiwifruit species and unknown Actinidia spp. in seven provinces and one city.In ruminants, the bacterial community in the gastrointestinal tract (***) has an essential role in healthy growth. Examining the bacterial composition in the *** between growth-retarded and normal yaks could improve our understanding of the role of microorganisms in yaks with growth retardation. In this study, eight male yaks with growth retardation were used as the growth-retarded yak (GRY) group, and another eight male growth normal yaks (GNYs) with the same breed and age were used as the GNY group. We compared the bacterial community in the rumen, duodenum, jejunum, ileum, cecum, and colon between GRY and GNY groups based on the 16S ribosomal RNA gene sequencing. Alpha-diversity revealed that the Shannon index in the duodenum and ileum of the GNY group was higher (P less then 0.05) than that of the GRY group. However, the opposite trend was found in the jejunum and cecum. The principal coordinates analysis (PCoA) showed that the bacterial structure in all segments of *** differed from each other between less then P less then 0.10) in the GNY group than those in the GRY group. Overall, these results improve our knowledge about the bacterial composition in the *** of growth-retarded and normal yaks, and regulating the bacterial community may be an effective solution to promote the compensatory growth of GRYs.Water utilities treat drinking water by adding phosphate to prevent metal dissolution from water pipe work systems and particularly lead poisoning. Phosphate can be a limiting nutrient for microbial biofilms in DWDS, yet its effects on these microbial consortia are not well understood. This research presents results from phosphate dosing experiments using a real scale chlorinated DWDS, comparing standard phosphate concentrations of United Kingdom drinking water (1 mgP/L) with a double dose (2 mgP/L) commonly used in plumbosolvency treatment. Biofilm development during phosphate treatment experiments was monitored using a holistic approach by combining metagenomics analysis, flow cytometry and SEM characterisation. The increase of phosphate levels in drinking water, reduced biofilm cell numbers and promoted the presence of poorly distributed biofilms on inner pipe surfaces. Metagenomics analysis using genetic markers (16S rRNA and ITS2) showed that phosphate influenced biofilm community structure, particularly fungal composition. Whole metagenome sequencing showed that phosphate enrichment favoured the presence of sequencing reads associated to ATPases, ion transporters and DNA-interacting proteins, whilst reads associated to nitrogen metabolism were predominant in control samples. This research brings new knowledge regarding the influence of phosphate treatment on the composition and structure of biofilms within DWDS, and the implications that this might have for the management of these systems.The research aim was to optimize the operating parameters of a diode laser irradiation for the effective disinfection of degraded collagenous materials. Historical leather shoes stored at the Auschwitz-Birkenau State Museum in Oświęcim (Poland) were the main study objects. Surfaces of contaminated small spots occurring on the degraded materials were sampled with moistened swabs and microbiologically examined using the molecular techniques MALDI-TOF MS, 16S rRNA, and NGS sequencing. The surfaces were colonized by bacteria with 106 CFU/100 cm2 and 104 CFU/100 cm2 by fungi, on average. Microorganisms of the genera Bacillus and Penicillium were predominant. The effectiveness of the laser treatment was assessed for the new and degraded collagenous materials against isolated environmental strains using four variants of exposure time and number of repetitions. 0.3 W/CW 2 × 2 min variant was the most effective and also did not noticeably change the color of the treated samples. To identify the functional determinants of the ALV-K envelope protein that binds to Tva (a recently identified cellular receptor of ALV-K), using the strategy of continuous, segment-by-segment substitution of the gp85-encoded surface glycoprotein (SU) of ALV-K GDFX0602 with ALV-E ev-1 (using Tvb as the receptor), a series of chimeric soluble gp85 proteins were expressed for co-immunoprecipitation (co-IP) analysis and a series of recombinant viruses with replication-competent avian retrovirus vectors containing Bryan polymerase (RCASBP) as their skeleton were created for transfecting to DF-1 cells and titer determination. The co-IP analysis, fluorescence-activated cell sorting, and virus titer measurements revealed that the substitution of residues 194-198, 206-216 of hr1, residues 251-256 between hr1 and hr2, and residues 269-280 of hr2 were identified to reduce the binding of gp85 to Tva. The substitution of residues 194-221 in hr1 nullified the infectiveness of these viruses, similar to the effect of single amino acid mutations in K251E and L252I located between hr1 and hr2; continuous amino acid mutations in hr2 could not produce the same effect despite reducing their infectiveness. Finally, single amino acid mutations G196A and R198H nearly abolished the binding of gp85 to Tva and nullified the infectiveness of these viruses to DF-1. This study paves the way for exploring the molecular mechanisms of the binding of Tva to ALV-K SU.
