These discrete bacterial communities can also vary according to geographical location. For the Pacific oyster, Crassostrea gigas, the factors governing bacterial diversity and abundance of different oyster microenvironments are poorly understood. In this study, the factors shaping bacterial abundance, diversity and composition associated with the C. gigas mantle, gill, adductor muscle, and digestive gland were characterised using 16S (V3-V4) rRNA amplicon sequencing across six discrete estuaries. Both location and tissue-type, with tissue-type being the stronger determinant, were factors driving bacterial community composition. Bacterial communities from wave-dominated estuaries had similar compositions and higher bacterial abundance despite being geographically distant from one another, possibly indicating that functional estuarine morphology characteristics are a factor shaping the oyster bacterial community. Despite the bacterial community heterogeneity, examinations of the core bacterial community identified Spirochaetaceae bacteria as conserved across all sites and samples. Whereas members of the Vulcaniibacterium, Spirochaetaceae and Margulisbacteria, and Polynucleobacter were regionally conserved members of the digestive gland, gill, and mantle bacterial communities respectively. This study was conducted to evaluate the clinical characteristics and prognosis of patients with pathological node-negative lung AC who have a high preoperative level of CEA. METHODS Among 2124 patients with lung AC between 2003 and 2016, 858 patients were enrolled. CEA levels were dichotomized as normal (≤5 ng/ml) or high (>5 ng/ml). According to the levels of CEA between 6 and 12 months after surgery, patients were divided into a normalized and a remained-high group. Propensity score matching was used to compare 80 patients without adjuvant chemotherapy (ACT) with 39 patients with ACT. Kaplan-Meier survival analysis with the log-rank test and Cox proportional hazards regression analysis were performed for recurrence-free survival (RFS) and overall survival (OS). To estimate the effects of sacubitril/valsartan had it been tested against a placebo control, we made indirect comparisons of the effects of sacubitril/valsartan with putative placebos in HF across the full range of left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF). METHODS AND RESULTS We analysed patient-level data from the PARADIGM-HF and PARAGON-HF trials (n = 13 194) and the CHARM-Alternative and CHARM-Preserved trials (n = 5050, candesartan vs. placebo). The rate ratio (RR) of sacubitril/valsartan vs. putative placebo was estimated by the product of the RR for sacubitril/valsartan vs. RASi and the RR for RASi vs. placebo. Total HF hospitalizations and cardiovascular death were analysed using the negative binom 0.58-0.78), cardiovascular death (RR 0.76, 95% CI 0.64-0.89), and all-cause death (RR 0.83, 95% CI 0.71-0.96); all P less then 0.02. A logistic regression analysis was conducted to identify the significant predictors of 30-day mortality. Multivariable Cox regression analysis was used to identify the potential risk factors of patient outcome and the effect of time on these factors. We report herein pyridinium-substituted tetraphenylethylene salts PTPE 1 - 3 which can target mitochondria and induce autophagy after forming complexes with albumin. It is interesting to note that mitochondrion affinity and autophagy-inducing level can be improved by prolonging the lengths of alkyl chains in PTPE 1 - 3 . In particular, PTPE 1 - 3 not only show pro-autophagic activity, but also exhibit mitophagy blockage effect. Failure in autophagosome-lysosome fusion in downstream autophagy flux results in cancer cell death. Besides, fast formation of complexes of PTPE 1 - 3 with albumin in blood can facilitate biomimetic delivery and deep tumor penetration. Efficient tumor accumulation and effective tumor suppression are successfully demonstrated with both in vitro and in vivo studies. Therefore, PTPE 1 - 3 salts exhibit dual functions i) they can target and image mitochondria because of AIE effect, and ii) they are promising for cancer therapy. © 2020 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim.BACKGROUND Valve-in-valve (VIV) treatment with transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) is a viable option for patients with failing aortic bioprosthetic valves. Optimal management of those with concomitant mitral regurgitation (MR) remains undetermined. Therefore, we sought to assess the implications of concomitant MR in patients undergoing VIV-TAVR. METHODS AND RESULTS The PARTNER 2 VIV registry enrolled patients with degenerated surgical aortic bioprosthesis at high risk for reoperation. Patients with core-laboratory echocardiographic assessment of MR were analyzed; severe MR was excluded. We compared patients with ≤mild MR versus moderate MR and assessed changes in MR severity and clinical outcomes. A total of 339 patients (89 initial registry, 250 continued access) underwent VIV procedures; mean age 79.0 ± 10.2 years, mean Society of Thoracic Surgeon score 8.9 ± 4.5%. At baseline, 228/339 (67.3%) had ≤mild MR and 111/339 (32.7%) had moderate MR. In paired analysis, there was significant improvement in ≥moderate MR from baseline to 30 days (32.6% vs. 14.5%, p less then .0001 [n = 304]), and no significant change between 30 days and 1 year (13.4% vs. 12.1%, p = .56 [n = 224]) or 1 year and 2 years (11.0% vs. 10.4%, p = .81 [n = 182]). There was no difference in death or stroke between ≤mild MR and moderate MR at 30 days (4.0% vs. 7.2%, p = .20), 1 year (15.5% vs. 15.3%, p = .98) or 2 years (26.5% vs. 23.5%, p = .67). CONCLUSION Moderate concomitant MR tends to improve with VIV-TAVR, and was not a predictor of long-term adverse outcomes in this cohort. In selected patients undergoing VIV-TAVR, it may be appropriate to conservatively manage concomitant MR. Several methods have been developed for their determination in biofluids, including solid-phase extraction and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays. However, still, there is a need for reliable and fast analytical methods. In this context, solid-phase microextraction offers many advantages such as flexibility in geometry and applicable sample volume, as well as high adaptability to high-throughput sampling. In this study, a solid-phase microextraction method was developed for the determination of 8-oxo-deoxyguanosine and 8-oxo-deoxyadenosine in biofluids. The extractive phase of solid-phase microextraction consisted of hydrophilic-lipophilic balanced polymeric particles. In order to develop a solid-phase microextraction method suitable for the determination of the analytes in saliva and urine, several parameters, including desorption solvent, desorption time, sample pH, and ionic strength, were scrutinized. Analytical figures of merit indicated that the developed method provides reasonable inter-day and intra-day precision ( less then 15% in both biofluids) with acceptable accuracy. It still remains unclear how mitochondria respond to stress-derived stimuli and release a low level of ROS. Here, we show that N-acetyl-l-tyrosine (NAT) functions as a plausible intrinsic factor responsible for these tasks in stressed animals. NAT is present in the blood or hemolymph of healthy animals, and its concentrations increase in response to heat stress. Pretreatment with NAT significantly increases the stress tolerance of tested insects and ****. Analyses using Drosophila larvae and cultured cells demonstrate that the hormetic effects are triggered by transient NAT-induced perturbation of mitochondria, which causes a small increase in ROS production and leads to sequential retrograde responses NAT-dependent FoxO activation increases in the gene expression of antioxidant enzymes and Keap1. Moreover, we find that NAT represses tumor growth, possibly via the activation of Keap1. These three pyrite groups can also be distinguished based on the pyrite crystallinity and the S isotope mass-independent signatures. One pyrite group displays poorly crystallized pyrite minerals with positive Δ33 S values > +3‰, while the other groups display more variable and closer to 0‰ Δ33 S values with recrystallized pyrite rims. It is worth to note that all the pyrite groups display positive Δ33 S values in the pyrite core and similar trace element compositions.

Emergency Care Connect (ECC) is a novel telemedicine program that uses videoconferencing to connect general ED and urgent care providers to pediatric emergency medicine physicians with the goal of keeping children in their communities for definitive care, when safe and feasible. ECC objectives are to 1) facilitate transfer decision-making for children receiving care in general ED and urgent care sites and 2) increase access to pediatric providers for real-time management, regardless of disposition. In its first 20 months, ECC partnered with four general EDs and one urgent care location, which together made 1,327 contacts with our pediatric center, of which 202 (15%) became ECC consultations for 200 unique patients. Of those consultations, 71% patients remained locally for treatment and 25% experienced a care plan change. Overall, ECC was rated highly by surveyed families and providers. Barriers to implementation, such as lack of familiarity with telemedicine and fears of changes in workflow, were overcome with strong institutional support and frequent, sustained stakeholder engagement. With greater adoption of this model, ECC and programs like it have the potential to allow more children to be treated in their communities, minimize preventable transfers, and reserve beds in children's hospitals for those with potentially higher-risk and more medically complex conditions. TQ can exhibit its antitumor effect by inhibiting the proliferation and metastasis of cancer cells. However, the underlying mechanism of TQ as a tumor inhibitor in bladder cancer remains poorly understood. First, in this research, we demonstrate that TQ can reverse EMT by upregulating epithelial markers, such as E-cadherin, and downregulating mesenchymal markers, such as N-cadherin and vimentin. Furthermore, we demonstrate that TQ can suppress the activation of the Wnt/β-catenin signaling pathway and inhibit the expression of β-catenin target genes, such as MYC, Axin-2, MMP7, CyclinD1 and MET, which play crucial roles in EMT and cancer progression.

Metoidioplasty denotes the creation of a neophallus out of the hormonally hypertrophied clitoris. Construction of an esthetically acceptable male-like genitalia while enabling micturition in standing position are the primary goals. Herein, we aim to review the literature regarding masculinizing gender-affirming genital surgery in the form of metoidioplasty, focusing on the steps related to urethral lengthening and reconstruction, and describe the authors' preferred surgical technique. Clitoral release, division of the urethral plate, native urethral lengthening with anterior vaginal wall flap, and neourethral tubularization using a combination of buccal mucosa graft and labia minora flap(s) seem to provide the best result in terms of urinary outcomes. This is reflected in a greater urethral length, higher probability of standing micturition, and lower incidence of fistula. Urethral complications, which can be encountered in up to 15% of the patients, may necessitate additional procedures. Some of the studies have reported successful penetrative intercourse following metoidioplasty. Case series about different metoidioplasty techniques do not allow head-to-head comparison due to non-standardized reporting and outcome assessment. Metoidioplasty can be offered to transgender men with sufficiently hypertrophied clitoris who wish to avoid a complicated, multistage, flap-based total phalloplasty, or for those individuals considering phalloplasty at a later date.The most dreaded complication of penile prosthesis (PP) implantation is device infection. We sought to assess whether inadequate cleaning and sterilization of the reusable Furlow inserter may represent one of the last etiologies of infection in PP patients. We performed a prospective analysis of cultures of the Furlow inserter used for PP surgeries from seven centers between May 1st and June 30th, 2019. Once the Furlow was received for surgery, the surgical team inspected the device for assembly status (disassembled or not) and the presence of visible stains, pieces of tissue or discoloration on either the interior of the barrel or the plunger. Swab aerobic and anaerobic bacterial and fungal cultures were then obtained from the internal component, after removal from the external component if assembled, and after introduction and immediate removal from the external component if disassembled. A total of 83 Furlow devices were cultured. Median age of surgical instrument was 4 years (2-10 years). Methods of sterilization included autoclave, wet autoclave, steam, and Sterad. Median time from sterilization was 3 days (1-22). On initial presentation, 79 devices were disassembled (95.1%) and 4 devices were still assembled (4.9%). Three external components were discolored (3.6%), while internal components demonstrated two stains (2.4%) indicative of improper cleaning which were thought to be residual blood products. Overall, 2/83 (2.4%) devices revealed positive swab cultures for Staphylococcus epidermidis. Swab cultures were negative for fungi and anaerobic bacteria. This patient cohort will continue to be followed to see if device infection occurs but it is unlikely to be meaningful since contaminated Furlows were discarded. Improper cleaning and/or sterilization of the Furlow Insertion Instrument may represent a source of infection for patients undergoing PP implantation.Aim of this review is to summarize and evaluate the current literature on the pathophysiology, prevalence, sociosexual impact, and potential treatment options of climacturia. Evidence regarding efficacy of surgical techniques (artificial urinary sphincter, male sling, or dual implantation of penile prosthesis with a sling) for climacturia treatment are limited but with an increasing trend of relevant published data in the last 5 years. This was based on a larger published questionnaire, which was translated and adapted. The questionnaire was then transcripted online, and after pilot testing, was disseminated using the Google documents® platform. Out of 261 responses, CSA was reported by 48 participants (18%), of which 39 were women. Thirty five reported contact CSA. Thirty seven victims (77%) reported previous disclosure of the event, but 18 of them were not protected post disclosure. CSA victims were less likely to agree with the perception that most perpetrators are mentally ill or disabled (p = 0.043), and more likely to strongly disagree with the statement that reputable families are protected from sexual abuse (p = 0.019). In agreement with existing data in general populations globally, about one in five medical students had exposure to CSA. In addition, a potential association of their own experiences with shaping perceptions regarding the identity of CSA perpetrators and affected families for medical students is highlighted.

Regarding pain, studies have found a reduction of this symptom in the neck, shoulders, ****, masseter, and larynx. In the perceptual analysis, an improvement was verified in the parameters of tension, breathiness, roughness, instability, and asthenia. In addition, different types of vocal symptoms such as pain, burning, lump in the throat and effort to speak were reduced after TENS. CONCLUSION Although the studies included in this review indicate that there were changes related to the reduction of vocal symptoms, reduction of pain and improvement of vocal quality after the application of TENS in dysphonic patients, studies with a higher level of evidence and rigorous assessments of methodological quality are necessary so that findings are more robust and replicable in clinical practice. The aim of this study is to compare the relatively new CO2 laser microlaryngeal surgery and conventional cold dissection method in treatment of minimal associated pathological lesions of vocal folds. Eighty patients aged 20-70 years old were randomly divided into two groups, group A (40 patients) was treated by the conventional method and group B (40 patients) was treated with CO2 laser microlaryngeal surgery. Assessment procedures included GRBAS scale, stroboscopic examination, and Arabic version of voice handicap index. Results stated that improvement of quality of voice after surgery in both techniques had no significant difference. The significant difference was in operative time and bleeding because laser had less time and bleeding. Both techniques had no recurrence within 3-months follow-up. BACKGROUND There are only scarce data on treatment of elderly patients with nab-paclitaxel for metastatic breast cancer, especially from the real-world setting. Here we present data from the noninterventional study NABUCCO with special focus on taxane-induced peripheral neuropathy (TIPN) in younger and elderly patients. PATIENTS AND METHODS A total of 407 patients with HR-positive/HER2-negative metastatic breast cancer were enrolled between April 2012 and April 2015 into the prospective, multicenter, noninterventional study NABUCCO. Details on effectiveness, tolerability, and safety of nab-paclitaxel were evaluated for younger ( less then 70 years) and elderly (≥70 years) patients. RESULTS Neither median time to progression (TTP, younger 6.0 months, 95% confidence interval [CI], 5.5-7.1; elderly 6.9 months, 95% CI, 5.5-8.6) nor median overall survival (younger 16.4 months, 95% CI, 14.2-18.1; elderly 14.5 months, 95% CI, 11.9-17.4) differed by age group, also not in view of prior treatments. A multivariate regression model revealed that age did not significantly influence the TTP. TIPN was reported by 49.0% younger (44.3% common terminology criteria for adverse events [CTCAE] grade 1/2, 4.7% grade 3/4) and 45.8% elderly patients (41.1% CTCAE grade 1/2, 4.7% grade 3/4). The cumulative nab-paclitaxel dose did not correlate with the severity/grading of TIPN. The aim of this study is to compare the relatively new CO2 laser microlaryngeal surgery and conventional cold dissection method in treatment of minimal associated pathological lesions of vocal folds. Eighty patients aged 20-70 years old were randomly divided into two groups, group A (40 patients) was treated by the conventional method and group B (40 patients) was treated with CO2 laser microlaryngeal surgery. Assessment procedures included GRBAS scale, stroboscopic examination, and Arabic version of voice handicap index. Results stated that improvement of quality of voice after surgery in both techniques had no significant difference. The significant difference was in operative time and bleeding because laser had less time and bleeding. Both techniques had no recurrence within 3-months follow-up. BACKGROUND There are only scarce data on treatment of elderly patients with nab-paclitaxel for metastatic breast cancer, especially from the real-world setting. Here we present data from the noninterventional study NABUCCO with special focus on taxane-induced peripheral neuropathy (TIPN) in younger and elderly patients. PATIENTS AND METHODS A total of 407 patients with HR-positive/HER2-negative metastatic breast cancer were enrolled between April 2012 and April 2015 into the prospective, multicenter, noninterventional study NABUCCO. Details on effectiveness, tolerability, and safety of nab-paclitaxel were evaluated for younger ( less then 70 years) and elderly (≥70 years) patients. RESULTS Neither median time to progression (TTP, younger 6.0 months, 95% confidence interval [CI], 5.5-7.1; elderly 6.9 months, 95% CI, 5.5-8.6) nor median overall survival (younger 16.4 months, 95% CI, 14.2-18.1; elderly 14.5 months, 95% CI, 11.9-17.4) differed by age group, also not in view of prior treatments. A multivariate regression model revealed that age did not significantly influence the TTP. TIPN was reported by 49.0% younger (44.3% common terminology criteria for adverse events [CTCAE] grade 1/2, 4.7% grade 3/4) and 45.8% elderly patients (41.1% CTCAE grade 1/2, 4.7% grade 3/4). The cumulative nab-paclitaxel dose did not correlate with the severity/grading of TIPN. The prevalence of obesity continues to grow, resulting in metabolic syndrome and increasing economic burden for health systems. The objectives were to measure the ability of the NIM-MetS test, previously used in the adults, for the early and sustainable detection of the Metabolic Syndrome (MetS) in children and adolescents. Moreover, to determine the economic burden of the children with MetS. Furthermore, finally, to use and implement the NIM-MetS test, via a self-created online software, as a new method to determine the risk of MetS in children. The method used was an observational study using different instruments (NIM-MetS test, International Diabetes Federation (IDF), or Cook) and measures (body mass index). Additionally, the economic burden was estimated via a research strategy in different databases, e.g., PubMed, to identify previous papers. The results (N = 265 children, age from 10-12) showed that 23.1% had obesity and 7.2% hypertension. The prevalence of MetS using the NIM-Mets was 5.7, and the cost of these children was approximate 618,253,99 euros. Finally, a model was obtained and later implemented in a web platform via simulation. The NIM-MetS obtained is a non-invasive method for the diagnosis of risk of MetS in children.The question of whether a newly identified sequence variant is truly a causative mutation is a central problem of modern clinical genetics. The presence of multiple rare sequence variants within a single CMT-affected patient makes selection for the strongest one, the truly causative mutation, a challenging issue. In the present study we propose a new yeast-based model to evaluate the pathogenic effect of rare sequence variants found within the one of the CMT-associated genes, GDAP1. In our approach, the wild-type and pathogenic variants of human GDAP1 gene were expressed in yeast. Then, a growth rate and mitochondrial morphology and function of GDAP1-expressing strains were studied. Also, the mutant GDAP1 proteins localization and functionality were assessed in yeast. We have shown, that GDAP1 was not only stably expressed but also functional in yeast cell, as it influenced morphology and function of mitochondria and altered the growth of a mutant yeast strain. What is more, the various GDAP1 pathogenic sequence variants caused the specific for them effect in the tests we performed. Our data indicate that pneumococci may use some of the known adaptation mechanisms to reduce the effect of LL-37 on their physiology, too. Additionally, several proteins seem to be involved in resistance to AMPs which have not been related to this process before, such as the teichoic acid flippase TacF (SPD_1128). The mean sleep efficiency was 84.6% and the mean score on sleep quality was 15.25. A multiple linear regression analysis showed that greater dependence in activities of daily living (ADL), higher pain, and light at night were related to lower sleep efficiency. Higher pain and fatigue, less activity time, noise and light at night, and lower nighttime staffing levels were related to poorer sleep quality.

Tooth roots and the mandibular canal can vary in location, which has not been described on a large scale. The objective of this study was to describe the three-dimensional anatomic relationship of the mandibular M1 tooth roots and the mandibular canal in dogs. Cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) was used to evaluate the anatomic relationship between the M1 tooth roots and the mandibular canal. CBCT images were collected from 101 canine cadaver heads from a variety of unknown breeds. All skulls used in this study were mesaticephalic, confirmed by facial index calculations. The position of the apex in relation to the mandibular canal and in relation to the buccal and lingual cortices was recorded and analyzed in relation to mandibular bone height root length ratio. When evaluating the apex in a buccal-lingual relationship, the tooth roots were found to be located closer to the lingual cortex in 73.3% of M1 roots. The objective of this study was to examine associations between rates of citizen phone reports of dead corvids and sociodemographic factors within the geographic areas where the reports were obtained. The data were grouped by forward sortation area (FSA), a geographical area based upon postal codes, which was linked with census data. Associations between the weekly rate of citizen reports and FSA-level sociodemographic factors were measured using multilevel negative binosiduals from a regression model to reduce confounding. The objective of this study was to determine if dogs can be castrated safely and painlessly by using only sedation and local anesthesia. After dogs were sedated with intramuscularly administered xylazine (1 mg/kg) and subanesthetic ketamine (1 mg/kg), testes and skin were anesthetized with 2% lidocaine (6 mg/kg, total dose) buffered with sodium bicarbonate. Systolic, diastolic, and mean blood pressures; heart and respiratory rates; and movement scores were determined before and during surgery when manipulations were most likely to cause pain. No dog reacted substantially to injection of the combination of sedatives, and no dog reacted noticeably to injection of lidocaine. During surgery, the average heart rate was reduced from baseline by 40-60 beats per minute, and the average respiratory rate was reduced by ~10 breaths per minute. An overall reduction of arterial blood pressures was observed. All but one dog moved purposely in response to a toe pinch at the end of surgery. We found that sedating dogs intramuscularly with xylazine and a sub-anesthetic dose of ketamine and administering lidocaine at the incision site and intratesticularly allowed dogs to be castrated humanely and avoided the expense of general anesthesia and the need for hospitalization. In contrast, reports of ZON's impact on horse reproduction are conflicting and inconclusive, some studies confounded by the presence of mycotoxins such as deoxynivalenol in the feed. This study assesses the effect of chronic consumption of zearalenone on reproduction in cycling mares fed >95% pure ZON (0, 2, or 8 mg/da; n = 7 mares/treatment) for three estrous cycles, followed by artificial insemination, through 16 days of pregnancy. Animals were on ZON treatment for between 70 and 121 days (average 84) depending on individual cycle patterns. To understand disease priorities of men and women livestock keepers and how these impact households, this study used participatory methods to elucidate priorities, reasons for prioritization, knowledge on small ruminant diseases and their transmission pathways. The study was conducted in 23 sites distributed across 14 districts in four regional states of Ethiopia. Ninety-two focus group discussions (FGD) were conducted with men or women only groups. Various tools, such as semi-structured interviews, simple scoring and proportional piling were used to facilitate the process. A follow-up household survey involving 432 households/interviewees collected in-depth data on key small ruminant diseases. Tooth roots and the mandibular canal can vary in location, which has not been described on a large scale. The objective of this study was to describe the three-dimensional anatomic relationship of the mandibular M1 tooth roots and the mandibular canal in dogs. Cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) was used to evaluate the anatomic relationship between the M1 tooth roots and the mandibular canal. CBCT images were collected from 101 canine cadaver heads from a variety of unknown breeds. All skulls used in this study were mesaticephalic, confirmed by facial index calculations. The position of the apex in relation to the mandibular canal and in relation to the buccal and lingual cortices was recorded and analyzed in relation to mandibular bone height root length ratio. When evaluating the apex in a buccal-lingual relationship, the tooth roots were found to be located closer to the lingual cortex in 73.3% of M1 roots. Surveillance of WNv included testing of corvids found dead and reported by citizens across Ontario, which at the time was a novel citizen science application for disease surveillance. While this surveillance program was successful for timely identification of WNv as it emerged and spread across the province, it is important to consider the influence of non-disease factors on surveillance data collected by the public. The objective of this study was to examine associations between rates of citizen phone reports of dead corvids and sociodemographic factors within the geographic areas where the reports were obtained. The data were grouped by forward sortation area (FSA), a geographical area based upon postal codes, which was linked with census data. Associations between the weekly rate of citizen reports and FSA-level sociodemographic factors were measured using multilevel negative binosiduals from a regression model to reduce confounding. The objective of this study was to determine if dogs can be castrated safely and painlessly by using only sedation and local anesthesia. After dogs were sedated with intramuscularly administered xylazine (1 mg/kg) and subanesthetic ketamine (1 mg/kg), testes and skin were anesthetized with 2% lidocaine (6 mg/kg, total dose) buffered with sodium bicarbonate. Systolic, diastolic, and mean blood pressures; heart and respiratory rates; and movement scores were determined before and during surgery when manipulations were most likely to cause pain. No dog reacted substantially to injection of the combination of sedatives, and no dog reacted noticeably to injection of lidocaine. During surgery, the average heart rate was reduced from baseline by 40-60 beats per minute, and the average respiratory rate was reduced by ~10 breaths per minute. An overall reduction of arterial blood pressures was observed. All but one dog moved purposely in response to a toe pinch at the end of surgery. We found that sedating dogs intramuscularly with xylazine and a sub-anesthetic dose of ketamine and administering lidocaine at the incision site and intratesticularly allowed dogs to be castrated humanely and avoided the expense of general anesthesia and the need for hospitalization. In contrast, reports of ZON's impact on horse reproduction are conflicting and inconclusive, some studies confounded by the presence of mycotoxins such as deoxynivalenol in the feed. This study assesses the effect of chronic consumption of zearalenone on reproduction in cycling mares fed >95% pure ZON (0, 2, or 8 mg/da; n = 7 mares/treatment) for three estrous cycles, followed by artificial insemination, through 16 days of pregnancy. Animals were on ZON treatment for between 70 and 121 days (average 84) depending on individual cycle patterns.
