The Atoms in Molecules theory of Bader and the Local Vibrational Modes analysis of Cremer and Kraka are applied to this task. The pressure sensing is achieved by incorporating a quantum tunnelling composite material composed of graphite nanoparticles in a rubber matrix into the multilayer nanostructure of a printed organic thin film transistor. This printed device was able to convert shock wave inputs rapidly and reproducibly into an inherently amplified electronic output signal. Variation of the organic ink material, solvents, and printing speeds were shown to modulate the multilayer nanostructure of the organic semiconducting and dielectric layers, enabling tuneable optimisation of the transistor response. The optimised printed device exhibits rapid switching from a non-conductive to a conductive state upon application of low pressures whilst operating at very low source-drain voltages (0-5 V), a feature that is often required in applications sensitive to stray electromagnetic signals but is not provided by conventional inorganic transistors and switches. The printed sensor also operates without the need for any gate voltage bias, further reducing the electronics required for operation. The printable low-voltage sensing and signalling system offers a route to simple low-cost assemblies for secure detection of stimuli in highly energetic systems including combustible or chemically sensitive materials.Swedish physical activity on prescription (PAP) is an evidence-based method to promote physical activity. However, few studies have investigated the effect of Swedish PAP on physical fitness, in which better cardiorespiratory fitness is associated with lower risks of all-cause mortality and diagnose-specific mortality. Direct measures of cardiorespiratory fitness, usually expressed as maximal oxygen uptake, are difficult to obtain. Hence, exercise capacity can be assessed from a submaximal cycle ergometer test, taking the linear relationship between heart rate, work rate, and oxygen uptake into account. The aim of this study was to evaluate exercise capacity in the long term, following PAP treatment with enhanced physiotherapist support in a nonresponding patient cohort. In total, 98 patients (48 women) with insufficient physical activity levels, with at least one component of the metabolic syndrome and nonresponding to a previous six-month PAP treatment, were randomized to PAP treatment with enhanced support from a physiotherapist and additional exercise capacity tests during a two-year period. A significant increase in exercise capacity was observed for the whole cohort at two-year follow-up (7.6 W, p ≤ 0.001), with a medium effect size (r = 0.34). Females (7.3 W, p = 0.025), males (8.0 W, p = 0.018) and patients ≥58 years old (7.7 W, p = 0.002) improved significantly, whereas a nonsignificant increase was observed for patients less then 58 years old (7.6 W, p = 0.085). Patients with insufficient physical activity levels who did not respond to a previous six-month PAP treatment can improve their exercise capacity following PAP treatment with enhanced support from a physiotherapist during a two-year period. Future studies should include larger cohorts with a control group to ensure valid estimations of exercise capacity and PAP.Previous studies have indicated that prenatal exposure to endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) can cause adverse neuropsychiatric disorders in children and adolescents. This study aimed to determine the association between the concentrations of prenatal EDCs and brain structure changes in teenagers by using MRI. We recruited 49 mother-child pairs during the third trimester of pregnancy, and collected and examined the concentration of EDCs-including phthalate esters, perfluorochemicals (PFCs), and heavy metals (lead, arsenic, cadmium, and mercury)-in maternal urine and/or serum. MRI voxel-based morphometry (VBM) and generalized q-sampling imaging (GQI) mapping-including generalized fractional anisotropy (GFA), normalized quantitative anisotropy (NQA), and the isotropic value of the orientation distribution function (ISO)-were obtained in teenagers 13-16 years of age in order to find the association between maternal EDC concentrations and possible brain structure alterations in the teenagers' brains. We found that there are several specific vulnerable brain areas/structures associated with prenatal exposure to EDCs, including decreased focal brain volume, primarily in the frontal lobe; high frontoparietal lobe, temporooccipital lobe and cerebellum; and white matter structural alterations, which showed a negative association with GFA/NQA and a positive association with ISO, primarily in the corpus callosum, external and internal capsules, corona radiata, superior fronto-occipital fasciculus, and superior longitudinal fasciculus. Prenatal exposure to EDCs may be associated with specific brain structure alterations in teenagers.

  • Accessing specialty care such as dermatology is a challenge for patients residing in marginalized communities. In 2019, there were nearly 30 million individuals without health insurance in the United States; furthermore, those from minority backgrounds are less likely to be insured than their White counterparts. Service learning is an educational approach that combines learning objectives with community service to provide a comprehensive scholastic experience, meet societal needs, and fulfill Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education requirements. A commitment to service learning in dermatology residency programs will improve skin health equity as well as dermatology residency education relating to cultural competency and socioeconomic determinants of health.
    It is hard for clinicians to choose the best regimen for pneumocystis jirovecii pneumonia (PJP) prophylaxis. The aim is to evaluate the effectiveness and safety of thrice weekly double strength (TWDS) vs daily single strength (DSS) trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole (TMP-SMX) for prophylaxis of PJP after kidney transplantation.

    Adult renal transplant recipients (RTRs) who were transplanted between January 1, 2015 and July 1, 2018 were evaluated. A total of 189 RTRs were prescribed PJP prophylactic regimen during the study period (TWDS group n=98; DSS group n=91).

    Morbidity due to PJP infection was significantly higher in TWDS group as compared with DSS group (8.60% vs 1.14%, p= 0.021). There was a significant trend toward higher prevalence of confirmed PJP (log-rank=0.021) in TWDS group. The use of DDS TMP-SMX for prophylaxis after kidney transplantation was associated with a 79% reduction in the incidence of PJP comparing the prophylactic regimen of TWDS. There was no significant difference between the two groups in the overall rate of premature TMP-SMX discontinuation and laboratory indexes.

Based on the results of 16S rRNA sequence analysis, ONC3T shows the highest sequence similarity to Massilia solisilvae J18T (97.8 %), Massilia terrae J11T (97.7 %) and Massilia agilis J9T (97.3 %). Strain M1T is most closely related to Noviherbaspirillum denitrificans TSA40T, Noviherbaspirillum agri K-1-15T and Noviherbaspirillum autotrophicum TSA66T (sequence identity of 98.2, 98.0 and 97.8 %, respectively). The whole genome of ONC3T has an assembled size of 5.62 Mbp, a G+C content of 63.8 mol% and contains 5104 protein-coding sequences, 56 tRNA genes and two rRNA operons. The genome of M1T has a length of 4.71 MBp, a G+C content of 63.81 mol% and includes 4967 protein-coding genes, two rRNA operons and 44 tRNA genes. Whole genome comparisons identified Massilia sp. WG5 with a 79.3 % average nucleotide identity (ANI) and 22.6 % digital DNA-DNA hybridization (dDDH), and Massilia sp. UBA11196 with 78.2 % average amino acid identity (AAI) as the most closely related species to ONC3T. M1T is most closely related to N. autotrophicum TSA66T with an ANI of 80.27 %, or N. denitrificans TSA40T with a dDDH of 22.3 %. Here we present the largest analysis of PQS in fungi and identify significant heterogeneity of these sequences throughout phyla, genera and species. PQS were genetically conserved in Aspergillus spp. and frequently pathogenic species appeared to contain fewer PQS than their lesser/non-pathogenic counterparts. GO-term analysis identified that PQS-containing genes were involved in processes linked with virulence such as zinc ion binding, the biosynthesis of secondary metabolites and regulation of transcription in A. fumigatus. Although the genome frequency of PQS was lower in A. fumigatus, PQS could be found enriched in genes involved in virulence, and genes upregulated during germination and hypoxia. Moreover, PQS were found in genes involved in drug resistance. Quadruplexes could have important roles within fungal biology and virulence, but their roles require further elucidation.A Gram-stain-negative, rod-shaped, non-motile, non-spore-forming, aerobic bacterium, designated type strain SSI9T, was isolated from sand fly (Phlebotomus papatasi Scopoli; Diptera Psychodidae) rearing substrate and subjected to polyphasic taxonomic analysis. Strain SSI9T contained phosphatidylethanolamine as a major polar lipid, MK-7 as the predominant quinone, and C16 1ω6c/C16 1ω7c, iso-C15 0, iso-C17 0 3-OH and C16 0 as the major cellular fatty acids. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences revealed that SSI9T represents a member of the genus Sphingobacterium, of the family Sphingobacteriaceae sharing 96.5-88.0 % sequence similarity with other species of the genus Sphingobacterium. The results of multilocus sequence analysis using the concatenated sequences of the housekeeping genes recA, rplC and groL indicated that SSI9T formed a separate branch in the genus Sphingobacterium. The genome of SSI9T is 5 197 142 bp with a DNA G+C content of 41.8 mol% and encodes 4395 predicted coding sequences, 49 tRNAs, and three complete rRNAs and two partial rRNAs.

  • There are few pathological and immunohistochemical descriptions of thyroid neoplasms in cats. We investigated neoplasms of the thyroid in 31 cats (average age 15.6 years) in Southern Brazil. Most (96.8%) of these cases were classified as follicular adenomas and were predominantly unilateral and multinodular. Histologically, macrofollicular adenomas were the most common type observed. Carcinomas represented 3.2% of the investigated tumours. By immunohistochemical labelling, thyroglobulin was expressed more commonly than paired box gene 8 or thyroid transcription factor 1 in the follicular adenomas. One carcinoma was immunopositive for thyroglobulin, pancytokeratin, chromogranin A and synaptophysin, suggestive of a calcitonin-negative neuroendocrine carcinoma.Mycoplasma pneumoniae (Mp) is a leading cause of human community-acquired pneumonia. To investigate the pathogenesis of the infection, 36 gerbils were intranasally inoculated with Mp culture (30 animals) or sterile mycoplasma broth (6 animals) and euthanized from 1 to 5 weeks post infection. A morphological and immunohistochemical study was carried out in all animals to determine the cellular populations present in lung parenchyma. Polyclonal and monoclonal antibodies were used to detect antigens of Mp and CD3, CD4, CD8 and CD79 lymphocytes, as well as cells containing S100 and major histocompatibility complex class II (****II) antigens. There was progressive infiltration of mononuclear cells in the lamina propria of bronchi and bronchioles, and hyperplasia of the bronchus-associated lymphoid tissue (BALT) in the infected animals.     There are few pathological and immunohistochemical descriptions of thyroid neoplasms in cats. We investigated neoplasms of the thyroid in 31 cats (average age 15.6 years) in Southern Brazil. Most (96.8%) of these cases were classified as follicular adenomas and were predominantly unilateral and multinodular. Histologically, macrofollicular adenomas were the most common type observed. Carcinomas represented 3.2% of the investigated tumours. By immunohistochemical labelling, thyroglobulin was expressed more commonly than paired box gene 8 or thyroid transcription factor 1 in the follicular adenomas. One carcinoma was immunopositive for thyroglobulin, pancytokeratin, chromogranin A and synaptophysin, suggestive of a calcitonin-negative neuroendocrine carcinoma.Mycoplasma pneumoniae (Mp) is a leading cause of human community-acquired pneumonia. To investigate the pathogenesis of the infection, 36 gerbils were intranasally inoculated with Mp culture (30 animals) or sterile mycoplasma broth (6 animals) and euthanized from 1 to 5 weeks post infection. A morphological and immunohistochemical study was carried out in all animals to determine the cellular populations present in lung parenchyma. The γ-dithiol formation at the onset of light is crucial to maximize photosynthetic efficiency since it lowers the [Formula see text] activation level for ATP synthesis in vitro. Here, we validate these findings in vivo by utilizing absorption spectroscopy in Arabidopsis thaliana. To do so, we monitored the [Formula see text] present in darkness and identified its mitochondrial sources. By following the fate and components of light-induced extra [Formula see text] , we estimated the ATP lifetime that lasted up to tens of minutes after long illuminations. Based on the relationship between [Formula see text] and CF1Fo activity, we conclude that the dithiol configuration in vivo facilitates photosynthesis by driving the same ATP synthesis rate at a significative lower [Formula see text] than in the γ-disulfide state. The presented in vivo findings are an additional proof of the importance of CF1Fo thiol modulation, reconciling biochemical in vitro studies and structural insights.The Na+-pumping NADH-ubiquinone oxidoreductase (Na+-NQR) is a main ion transporter in many pathogenic bacteria. As the first step to this end, we undertook to specifically attach an alkyne group to a lysine located in the stretch via protein-ligand affinity-driven substitution using synthetic ligands NAS-K1 and NAS-K2. This study was carried out to determine the spatial distribution and risk factors of heterophyidiasis in five selected villages in New Corella, Davao del Norte in Southern Mindanao. Of the 1,101 individuals examined, 26 (2.36% overall prevalence rate, 95% CI 1.46-3.25) were positive for heterophyid eggs. Higher infection rate was observed in males (3.85%, 95% CI 2.27-5.43) than females (0.76%, 95% CI 0.02-1.5). Mapping of cases was done to show the spatial distribution of heterophyidiasis in New Corella. Multiple logistic regression analysis showed that gender, raw freshwater fish consumption, undercooked grilled fish consumption and proximity to rivers or creeks are the risk factors significantly associated with heterophyid infection. This study confirmed the presence of heterophyid infection in humans in the surveyed villages in New Corella in Southern Philippines.A total of 1340 fresh fecal samples from farm and pet animals in Central Anatolia and the Middle Black Sea Region of Turkey were investigated using a PCR assay targeting the SSU rRNA of Blastocystis sp. An overall Blastocystis sp. prevalence of 19.4% (183/940) was found in farm animals, including cattle, sheep, water buffaloes, and chickens. Fecal samples of dogs, cats, and horses were negative. The highest prevalence of Blastocystis sp. was found in sheep (38.2%) among the farm animals. The SSU rRNA sequence analysis revealed two animal-specific subtypes, including ST10 in cattle and sheep and ST14 in water buffaloes. The zoonotic subtype ST7 was identified in chickens. Our results indicated a high prevalence of animal-specific subtypes in livestock and zoonotic subtype ST7 in chickens, highlighting the potential risk of chickens for zoonotic transmission of Blastocystis in the research area. This study is the first large-scale evaluation of Blastocystis in animal hosts in Turkey, and contributes to the molecular epidemiology and genetics of Blastocystis. Our results should be considered by authorities as an indication of the zoonotic importance of Blastocystis sp. and the need for surveillance in public health intervention programs.

  • HIV-1 Gag p24 has long been identified as an informative biomarker of HIV replication, disease progression, and therapeutic efficacy, but the lower sensitivity of immunoassays in comparison to molecular tests and the interference with antibodies in chronic HIV infection limit its application for clinical monitoring. The development of ultrasensitive protein detection technologies may help in overcoming these limitations. Here, we evaluated whether immune complex dissociation combined with ultrasensitive digital enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) single-molecule array (Simoa) technology could be used to quantify p24 in plasma samples from people with HIV-1 infection. We found that, among different immune complex dissociation methods, only acid-mediated dissociation was compatible with ultrasensitive p24 quantification by digital ELISA, strongly enhancing p24 detection at different stages of HIV-1 infection. We show that ultrasensitive p24 levels correlated positively with plasma HIV RNA and HIV DNA and ondition. In this context, there is a need for additional biomarkers to monitor HIV-1 residual disease or the outcome of new interventions, such as in the case of HIV cure strategies. The p24 antigen has a long half-life outside viral particles, and it is, therefore, a very promising marker to monitor episodes of viral replication or transient activation of the viral reservoir. However, the formation of immune complexes with anti-p24 antibodies makes its quantification difficult beyond acute HIV-1 infection. We show here that, upon immune complex dissociation, new technologies allow the ultrasensitive p24 quantification in plasma samples throughout HIV-1 infection at levels close to those of viral RNA and DNA determinations. A quantitative analysis of the profile of viral RNA segments packaged into RVFV particles showed that all three genomic RNA segments had similar packaging abilities, whereas among antigenomic RNA segments, the antigenomic S RNA, which serves as the template for the transcription of mRNA expressing the RVFV virulence factor, NSs, displayed a significantly higher packaging ability. To delineate the factor(s) governing the packaging of RVFV RNA segments, we characterized the interactions between Gn and viral RNPs in RVFV-infected cells. The main Potyviridae genus is Potyvirus, and a group of potyviruses infecting sweet potato presents an enlarged P1 protein with a polymerase slippage motif that produces an extra product termed P1N-PISPO. These two proteins display some RSS activity and are expressed followed by HCPro, which appears to be the main RNA silencing suppressor in these viruses.     HIV-1 Gag p24 has long been identified as an informative biomarker of HIV replication, disease progression, and therapeutic efficacy, but the lower sensitivity of immunoassays in comparison to molecular tests and the interference with antibodies in chronic HIV infection limit its application for clinical monitoring. The development of ultrasensitive protein detection technologies may help in overcoming these limitations. Here, we evaluated whether immune complex dissociation combined with ultrasensitive digital enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) single-molecule array (Simoa) technology could be used to quantify p24 in plasma samples from people with HIV-1 infection. We found that, among different immune complex dissociation methods, only acid-mediated dissociation was compatible with ultrasensitive p24 quantification by digital ELISA, strongly enhancing p24 detection at different stages of HIV-1 infection. We show that ultrasensitive p24 levels correlated positively with plasma HIV RNA and HIV DNA and ondition. In this context, there is a need for additional biomarkers to monitor HIV-1 residual disease or the outcome of new interventions, such as in the case of HIV cure strategies. The terms "high-risk recipient" and "marginal donor" have been used broadly in the literature making it virtually impossible to make comparisons between publications. In general, the data support that patients who could be easily agreed to be "sicker recipients" are at more risk compared to those who are clearly "healthier," albeit still "sick enough" to need transplantation. Given this variability in the literature, we were unable to define how being a "high-risk" recipient interplays with accepting a "marginal donor." Existing risk scores are described, but none were felt to adequately predict outcomes from factors available at the time of offer acceptance. CONCLUSIONS We could not determine what makes a donor "marginal," a recipient "high-risk," or how these factors interplay within the specific recipient-donor pair to determine outcomes. Herein a selected group of oxoammonium cations functioned as artificial deprenylases to promote highly selective deprenylation of i6A at nucleoside, oligonucleotide and live cells levels. Importantly, other epigenetic modifications, amino acid residues and natural products, were not affected. Moreover, a significant phenotype difference in the Arabidopsis thaliana shoot and root development with incubation of the cation was observed. Consequences and ways to reduce the discard rate are discussed. A systemic review on published literature on pediatric transplantation published in English since 2010 was undertaken. Additionally, a survey was sent to international OPOs with the goal of incorporating responses from around the world providing a more global picture. Based on the literature review and survey, there is a remarkably wide range of discard and/or refusal for pediatric hearts offered for transplant, ranging between 18% and 57% with great geographic variation. The data suggest that that the overall refusal rate may have decreased over the last decade. Reasons for organ discard were difficult to identify from the available data. Although the refusal rate of pediatric donor hearts seems to be lower compared to that reported in adults, it is still as high as 57% with geographic variation. © 2020 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

  • To determine the prevalence of employment status (ES) or full-time study after traumatic brain injury (TBI) in a representative population and its predictive factors.

    Prospective cohort study.

    Regional Major Trauma Centre. Participants In total, 1734 consecutive individuals of working age, admitted with TBI to a Regional Trauma Centre, were recruited and followed up at 8 weeks and 1 year with face-to-face interview. Median age was 37.2 years (17.5-58.2); 51% had mild TBI, and 36.8% had a normal computed tomographic (CT) scan. Main Outcome Measure Complete or partial/modified return to employment or study as an ordinal variable.

    At 1 year, only 44.9% returned to full-time work/study status, 28.7% had a partial or modified return, and 26.4% had no return at all. In comparison with status at 6 weeks, 9.9% had lower or reduced work status. Lower ES was associated with greater injury severity, more CT scan abnormality, older age, mechanism of assault, and presence of depression, alcohol intoxication, or a psychiatric history. The multivariable model was highly significant (P < .001) and had a Nagelkerke R2 of 0.353 (35.3%).

    Reduced walking speed is common following traumatic brain injury (TBI). Walking speed reserve (WSR) refers to the ability to increase walking speed on demand and is calculated as the difference between self-selected and fast walking speeds. Walking speed reserve is important for adaptive functional mobility in the community. Predictors of WSR following TBI are yet to be determined. The aim of the study was to identify whether static balance or ankle power generation (APG) was a stronger predictor of WSR following TBI.

    A total of 92 individuals receiving inpatient physiotherapy for mobility limitations following TBI were recruited.

    Walking speed (self-selected and fast), APG, and a summed single-leg stance scores were measured. The ability to increase walking speed on demand by 0.20 m/s or more defined WSR. Correlations, logistic regression, and receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analyses were performed to investigate independent relationships between WSR, APG, and static balance.

    Fifty participants (54.3%) had a WSR of 0.20 m/s or more. The strongest predictor of WSR was APG (odds ratio [OR] = 3.34; 95% CI, 1.50-7.43) when compared with static balance (OR = 1.03; 95% CI, 1.01-1.06). The ROC curve demonstrated that APG could accurately discriminate between individuals with a WSR from those without (AUC [area under the ROC curve] = 0.79; 95% CI, 0.70-0.88). The APG cutoff score identified on the curve that maximized combined sensitivity (92.0%) and specificity (54.8%) was 0.75 W/kg.

    Following TBI, APG was a stronger predictor of WSR than static balance. Clinicians should consider interventions that preferentially target APG in order to increase WSR for community mobility.

The ROC curve demonstrated that APG could accurately discriminate between individuals with a WSR from those without (AUC [area under the ROC curve] = 0.79; 95% CI, 0.70-0.88). However, novel and unthought of side effects of continuous usage of masks for long durations are being reported. Social shaping of technology (SST) of household appliances provides a critical lens of understanding the involved socio-technical drivers behind these constraints. This study employs an SST lens to investigate appliance uptake drivers in 14,580 households in Rwanda, such that these drivers can aid in policy design for green growth at the grassroots level. Positivity gives a better picture of the spread of this pandemic as, with time, more tests are being administered. Positivity under 5% has been desired for the reopening of businesses to almost 100% capacity. Secondly, the data used by models like SEIRD (Susceptible, Exposed, Infectious, Recovered, and Deceased) lacks information about the sentiment of people concerning coronavirus. The steps of data transformation, which we refer to as data-texts, we argue, unfold the processes of using evidence during knowledge building and reveal the dynamics of scientific practices. Data-texts involve (a) obtaining observations/measurements to become data; (b) selecting and interpreting data to become evidence; (c) using evidence to ascertain patterns and develop models; and (d) utilizing the patterns and models to propose and refine explanations. Throughout the transformations of the EE continuum, there are stages of transition that foster the engagement of learners in negotiations of meaning and collective construction of knowledge. A focus on the EE continuum facilitates the emergence of further insights, both by questioning the nature of the data and its multiple possibilities for change and representations and by reflecting on the nature of the explanations. The shift of emphasis to the epistemics of science holds implications for the design of learning environments that support learners in developing contemporary understandings of the nature and processes of scientific practices.National studies on food waste quantification in EU countries present highly discrepant results due to the different quantification approaches adopted. The European Commission has published a delegated act establishing a common methodology and minimum quality requirements for the uniform measurement of food waste generated in Member States. Nevertheless, as EU countries are at different levels of development and implementation of national strategies for food waste quantification, there is a need to develop a harmonized modelling system that enables the estimation of food waste generated by Member States to assess the amounts reported by each country. The aim of this paper is to fulfil this need by presenting two modelling approaches to estimate food waste in EU countries. One approach is based on Material Flow Analysis (MFA) and combines statistical information on the production and trade of food products with food waste coefficients. The other approach is based on the estimation of food waste based on waste statistics. Three EU countries are used to illustrate the two approaches and compare the results obtained thereby. Food waste estimates from waste statistics are generally lower than those obtained using MFA, in particular at the early stages of the food chain. The MFA model presented in this article is the first of its kind developed to estimate food waste across Member States in a consistent way and through time. Crucially, this could support the definition of a baseline and binding targets to reduce food waste across the EU, as announced in the EU Farm to Fork Strategy.

    We searched the MEDLINE, Embase, and Cochrane databases until February 2020. Observational studies assessing ARR diagnostic performance as a screening test for primary aldosteronism were selected. To limit verification bias, only studies where dynamic confirmatory testing was implemented as a reference standard regardless of the ARR result were included. Study-level data were extracted and risk of bias and applicability were assessed using the QUADAS-2 tool.

    Ten studies, involving a total of 4110 participants, were included. Potential risk of bias related to patient selection was common and present in half of the included studies.
