  • BACKGROUND The built environment is a structural determinant of health and has been shown to influence health expenditures, behaviors, and outcomes. Traditional methods of assessing built environment characteristics are time-consuming and difficult to combine or compare. Google Street View (GSV) images represent a large, publicly available data source that can be used to create indicators of characteristics of the physical environment with machine learning techniques. The aim of this study is to use GSV images to measure the association of built environment features with health-related behaviors and outcomes at the census tract level. METHODS We used computer vision techniques to derive built environment indicators from approximately 31 million GSV images at 7.8 million intersections. Associations between derived indicators and health-related behaviors and outcomes on the census-tract level were assessed using multivariate regression models, controlling for demographic factors and socioeconomic position. Statistical significance was assessed at the α = 0.05 level. RESULTS Single lane roads were associated with increased diabetes and obesity, while non-single-family home buildings were associated with decreased obesity, diabetes and inactivity. Street greenness was associated with decreased prevalence of physical and mental distress, as well as decreased binge drinking, but with increased obesity. Socioeconomic disadvantage was negatively associated with binge drinking prevalence and positively associated with all other health-related behaviors and outcomes. CONCLUSIONS Structural determinants of health such as the built environment can influence population health. Our study suggests that higher levels of urban development have mixed effects on health and adds further evidence that socioeconomic distress has adverse impacts on multiple physical and mental health outcomes.BACKGROUND Birth order has been shown to affect the health of the child; less is known, however, about how birth order affects caries development in children. Children with registry data on dental examinations and sociodemographic characteristics at ages 3- and 7 years constituted the final study cohort (n = 65,259). The outcome variable was "caries increment from age 3- to 7 years" (Δdeft > 0) and the key exposure, "birth order", was divided into five groups. A forward stepwise logistic binary regression was done for the multivariate analysis with adjustments for sociodemographic factors. RESULTS At age 3 years, 94% had no fillings or manifest caries lesions. During the study period, 22.5% (n = 14,711) developed dental caries. The final logistic regression analysis found a statistically significant positive association between birth order and caries increment. Further, excess risk increased with higher birth order; with the mother's first-born child as reference, risk for the second-born child was OR 1.17, 95% CI = 1.12-1.23; for the third-born child, OR 1.47, 95% CI = 1.38-1.56; for the fourth-born child, OR 1.69, 95% CI = 1.52-1.88; and for the fifth-born or higher birth-order child, OR 1.84, 95% CI = 1.58-2.14. CONCLUSIONS These findings show that birth order influences caries development in siblings, suggesting that birth order can be regarded as a predictor for caries development in young children.   • Myricetin is a commonly found dietary flavonoid. In the present study, we investigated the effects of myricetin on migration and invasion of radioresistant lung cancer cells (A549-IR). Transcriptome analysis of A549-IR cells identified several differentially expressed genes (DEGs) in A549-IR cells compared to parental A549 cells. Functional enrichment analysis revealed that most of the DEGs were linked with PI3K-AKT signaling, proteoglycans, focal adhesion, and ECM-receptor interactions. A549-IR cells demonstrated enhanced migratory potential with increased expression of vimentin, snail and slug, and reduced expression of E-cadherin. A549-IR cells exposed to myricetin displayed reduced migration and suppressed MMP-2 and MMP-9 expression. In this study, the effects of microwave and low-temperature cooking on GLR and SFR contents in broccoli were investigated. Both microwaving and mild heating increased the GLR and SFR levels in broccoli compared to the raw samples (without any treatment). In particular, SFR level was significantly low under 40°C and dramatically increased from 40 to 60°C, but nothing was detected at 70°C. Compared with conventional heating, microwave heating increased the GLR and SFR yield by about 80% at 50 and 60°C. Microwave power level also influenced the SFR contents. At the same temperatures (50 and 60°C), high-power microwave (950 W) with a short time produced over 40% more SFR than low-power microwave treatment (475 W). Hence, mild heating by microwave could increase the GLR and SFR levels in broccoli, and high-power microwave heating with temperature control at 60°C could retain higher bioavailability of these bioactive compounds in broccoli. © 2020 The Authors. There were 112 Escherichia coli strains that were isolated, with approximately 26% of the samples contaminated by E. coli. The detection rate of E. coli isolated from pork was the highest (59.6%), followed by mutton (52.6%), retail fresh milk (52.4%), duck (36.4%), beef (35.3%), chicken (33.3%), and ready-to-eat food (12.9%); the E. coli detection rate for fish and vegetables was less then 11%. The result showed that the 112 isolates were mostly resistant to tetracycline (52%), followed by ampicillin (42%), compound trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole (37%), amoxicillin (33%), and nalidixic acid (32%), imipenem resistance was not detected. One hundred isolates carried at least one antimicrobial resistance gene. The detection rate of resistance genes of our study was as follows tetA (38%), tetB (27%), bla OXA (40%), bla TEM (20%), floR (20%), sul1 (16%), sul2 (27%), *** Ala (19%), aadB (11%), strA (28%), and strB (24%); tetC and bla PSE were not detected. Carrot slices treated with PEF were suspended in water at the desired temperature and liquid-to-solid weight ratio of L/S = 2. Immediately after the PEF treatment, a significant increase in solute extraction was observed due to the permeability of cell membrane that could lead to the enhancement of solute convection on the surface of the tissue. Optimum extraction parameters were obtained as follows PEF with the field intensity of 750 V/cm, 10 pulses, and temperature of 45°C. © 2020 The Authors. A handheld spectroscopy system combined with chemometrics was utilized to assess CDBT from eight grades. Both variables selection methods, namely genetic algorithm (GA) and successive projections algorithm (SPA), were employed to acquire the feature variables of each sample spectrum. A partial least-squares discriminant analysis (PLS-DA) and support vector machine (SVM) algorithms were applied for the establishment of the grading discrimination models based on near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS). Comparisons of the portable and benchtop NIRS systems were implemented to obtain the optimal discriminant models. Experimental results showed that GA-SVM models by the handheld sensors yielded the best predictive performance with the correct discriminant rate (CDR) of 98.75% and 100% in the training set and prediction set, respectively. This study demonstrated that the handheld system combined with a suitable chemometric and feature information selection method could successfully be used for the rapid and efficient discrimination of CDBT rankings.

Subjects were treated with darifenacin 15 mg daily for 8 weeks. The primary outcome was change in fecal incontinence symptom severity using the St. Marks (Vaizey) score after 8 weeks. Sample size was based on the minimally important difference of the St. Marks, -5, and standard deviation, ± 8.5; 30 subjects provided 80% power and type I error of 0.05, including a 15% attrition rate. Results Thirty-two women were consented with mean baseline St. Marks (Vaizey) score of 18.0 ± 3.0. Mean age was 66.5 ± 10.3 years. Twenty-eight subjects (29/32, 87.5%) completed assessments. St. Marks (Vaizey) score significantly improved from 18.0 to 11.0 [mean difference - 7.0, 95% confidence interval (CI) -8.7, -5.3], and 19 subjects (19/32,67.9%) met the minimally important difference. Statistically significant improvements were also noted in fecal incontinence frequency, quality of life, and overactive bladder symptom bother and quality of life (all p less then 0.01). Conclusions Darifenacin can be considered a highly effective early intervention in women suffering from double incontinence. Results ACEs were found to have both direct (β = 0.102, p = 0.023) and indirect (β = 0.216, p less then 0.001) effects on depression. The indirect effect was negatively mediated by psychological resilience and positively by CSEs. Respondents with higher levels of psychological resilience reported lower depressive symptoms and lower ACEs scores, while those with higher scores of either CSEs or ACEs reported more depressive symptoms. Conclusions The impact of ACEs on depression may be reduced by managing current stressors and building students' psychological resilience.The lagoon of Venice has always been affected by the regional geomorphological evolution, anthropogenic stressors and global changes. Different morphological settings and variable biogeophysical conditions characterize this continuously evolving system that rapidly responds to the anthropic impacts. When the lockdown measures were enforced in Italy to control the spread of the SARS-CoV-2 infection on March 10th 2020, the ordinary urban water traffic around Venice, one of the major pressures in the lagoon, came to a halt. This provided a unique opportunity to analyse the environmental effects of restrictions to mobility on water transparency. Pseudo true-colour composites Sentinel-2 satellite imagery proved useful for qualitative visual interpretation, showing the reduction of the vessel traffic and their wakes from the periods before and during the SARS-CoV-2 outbreak. A quantitative analysis of suspended matter patterns, based on satellite-derived turbidity, in the absence of traffic perturbations, allowed to focus on natural processes and the residual stress from human activities that continued throughout the lockdown. We conclude that the high water transparency can be considered as a transient condition determined by a combination of natural seasonal factors and the effects of COVID-19 restrictions.The present study examines the asymmetrical effect of temperature on COVID-19 (Coronavirus Disease) from 22 January 2020 to 31 March 2020 in the 10 most affected provinces in China. This study used the Sim & Zhou' quantile-on-quantile (QQ) approach to analyze how the temperature quantities affect the different quantiles of COVID-19. Daily COVID-19 and, temperature data collected from the official websites of the Chinese National Health Commission and Weather Underground Company (WUC) respectively. Empirical results have shown that the relationship between temperature and COVID-19 is mostly positive for Hubei, Hunan, and Anhui, while mostly negative for Zhejiang and Shandong provinces. The remaining five provinces Guangdong, Henan, Jiangxi, Jiangsu, and Heilongjiang are showing the mixed trends. These differences among the provinces can be explained by the differences in the number of COVID-19 cases, temperature, and the province's overall hospital facilitations. Results Social anxiety correlated negatively with the expectation to be liked but was not related to observer ratings of likeability, self-disclosure or mimicry. However, degree of social anxiety moderated the relation between expectations and self-disclosure. As expected, participants with low levels of social anxiety disclosed more if they expected to be liked. A reversed pattern was found for the high socially anxious participants Here, higher expectations of being liked were related to less self-disclosure. Limitations The study used an analogue female sample. Our social interaction task was highly structured and does not reflect informal day-to-day conversations. Conclusion Socially anxious individuals function rather well in highly structured social tasks. No support was found for declined likeability or disrupted mimicry. Nevertheless, high socially anxious individuals did have a cognitive bias and show a self-protective strategy when expecting a neutral judgment they reduce their level of self-disclosure. This pattern probably adds to their feelings of social disconnectedness.

  • Striae distensae (SD) are linear dermal scars that arise from progressive stretching or tearing of the dermal layer. This study tests the safety and efficacy of a topical formulation of silicone-based scar cream containing selective synthetic recombinant human growth factors, hyaluronic acid, and vitamin C to improve overall appearance and texture of SD. Twenty-two subjects with SD alba were recruited and randomized to apply the topical formula to half of their SD laterally twice a day for 1 month. Patient surveys were obtained at 1 month for overall appearance, texture, and tolerability. Three-dimensional imaging was obtained at baseline and at 1 month and submitted to independent evaluators for grading on overall appearance. Subjects reported improved texture and appearance in 86.4% of SD. Subjects reported 100% of untreated SD to have no change in overall appearance or texture. 90.9% of subjects reported no tolerability issues. 9.1% of the treated group reported mild issues such as slight itching or redness the first day of application, which subsided in 2 days for all patients. Independent evaluators indicated improvement in 72.7% of SD in comparison to improvement in 36.3% of untreated SD. This study demonstrates that the investigated topical formulation is safe and effective to use for SD.Five-aminolevulinic acid (5-ALA)-photodynamic therapy combined with infrared radiation is an effective and safe therapy for facial acne. Although there are various available agents for treating acne, therapies for resistant or severe strains have been limited. The aim of this study was to investigate the inhibitory efficacy of ALACELL synthesized by combining 5-ALA with Y-G-G-F-L peptide against Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus cereus, Escherichia coli, and Yersinia enterocolitica, as well as Cutibacterium acnes. Furthermore, other effects of ALACELL on human skin cells, melanin formation, intracellular tyrosinase activity, and Ultra Violet B (UVB)-irradiated cell death were measured by treatment of ALACELL in vitro. ALACELL particularly showed a growth inhibitory effect on C. acnes and no inhibitory effect on the four bacteria strains. ALACELL reduced melanin formation and intracellular tyrosinase activity by α-melanin cell-stimulating hormone (α-MSH) in B16F10 cells, with no cytotoxicity. ALACELL also improved cell viability in UVB-irradiated HaCaT cells. The results of the experiment show that ALACELL exhibits more efficacy than 5-ALA against antimicrobial activity, melanin formation, intracellular tyrosinase activity, and UVB-irradiated cell death. In a follow-up study, a wrinkle care cream containing 0.03% of fucoxanthin concentrate was prepared and tested in women (aged 35-50 years, n = 21) for 8 weeks. The cream was applied twice daily. Safety assessment of the cream was carried out visually. In addition, interviews were conducted to investigate if adverse events such as erythema, edema, scaling, itching, stinging, burning, tightness, or prickling had occurred. No symptoms that threaten skin safety were reported. Evaluation of wrinkles around the eyes using the replica method showed a statistically significant decrease in wrinkles at week 8. In the first session, participants received hand massages using two skin care creams (luxury and basic). In the third session, they received a hand massage as per the first session. Functional magnetic resonance imaging data were recorded during massages. Differential activity in the ventral striatum (VS), the caudate nucleus, and the dorsomedial prefrontal cortex (DMPFC) was significantly higher in the third session than in the first session. Moreover, differential activity in the right dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) was positively correlated with differential activity in both the VS and the DMPFC in the third session. This study demonstrates that the investigated topical formulation is safe and effective to use for SD.Five-aminolevulinic acid (5-ALA)-photodynamic therapy combined with infrared radiation is an effective and safe therapy for facial acne. Although there are various available agents for treating acne, therapies for resistant or severe strains have been limited. The aim of this study was to investigate the inhibitory efficacy of ALACELL synthesized by combining 5-ALA with Y-G-G-F-L peptide against Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus cereus, Escherichia coli, and Yersinia enterocolitica, as well as Cutibacterium acnes. Furthermore, other effects of ALACELL on human skin cells, melanin formation, intracellular tyrosinase activity, and Ultra Violet B (UVB)-irradiated cell death were measured by treatment of ALACELL in vitro. ALACELL particularly showed a growth inhibitory effect on C. acnes and no inhibitory effect on the four bacteria strains. ALACELL reduced melanin formation and intracellular tyrosinase activity by α-melanin cell-stimulating hormone (α-MSH) in B16F10 cells, with no cytotoxicity. ALACELL also improved cell viability in UVB-irradiated HaCaT cells. The results of the experiment show that ALACELL exhibits more efficacy than 5-ALA against antimicrobial activity, melanin formation, intracellular tyrosinase activity, and UVB-irradiated cell death. Therefore, ALACELL is recommended as a candidate for clinical application in the treatment of acne and skin aging and will be further investigated to study the mode of action and in actual situations.The aim of the study was to investigate the potential of a fucoxanthin concentrate prepared from Phaeodactylum tricornutum as a wrinkle care cosmetic agent. The concentrate (up to 25 µg/ml) did not affect the proliferation of human fibroblasts. In addition, the concentrate significantly increased procollagen synthesis in the fibroblasts at 12.5 and 25 µg/ml; however, it significantly decreased the expression of matrix metalloproteinase (MMP)-1, MMP-2, and MMP-9 at 25 µg/ml. In a follow-up study, a wrinkle care cream containing 0.03% of fucoxanthin concentrate was prepared and tested in women (aged 35-50 years, n = 21) for 8 weeks. The cream was applied twice daily. Safety assessment of the cream was carried out visually. In addition, interviews were conducted to investigate if adverse events such as erythema, edema, scaling, itching, stinging, burning, tightness, or prickling had occurred. No symptoms that threaten skin safety were reported. Evaluation of wrinkles around the eyes using the replica method showed a statistically significant decrease in wrinkles at week 8. Moreover, skin moisture and elasticity increased significantly from week 4. In the first session, participants received hand massages using two skin care creams (luxury and basic). In the third session, they received a hand massage as per the first session. Functional magnetic resonance imaging data were recorded during massages. Differential activity in the ventral striatum (VS), the caudate nucleus, and the dorsomedial prefrontal cortex (DMPFC) was significantly higher in the third session than in the first session. Moreover, differential activity in the right dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) was positively correlated with differential activity in both the VS and the DMPFC in the third session. Despite abundant existing positioning algorithms, there is a lack of dedicated work that systematically describes the delicate aspects of a space-borne GNSS timing receiver. Based on the experimental work of the **** QIAO (NORAD ID40136) communication satellite's GNSS receiver, we propose a fine-tuned positioning algorithm for space-borne GNSS timing receivers. Specifically, the proposed algorithm includes (1) a filtering architecture that separates the estimation of satellite position and velocity from other unknowns, which allows for a first estimation of satellite position and velocity incorporating any variation of orbit dynamics; (2) a two-threshold robust cubature Kalman filter to counteract the adverse influence of measurement outliers on positioning quality; (3) Reynolds averaging inspired clock and frequency error estimation. Hardware emulation test results show that the proposed algorithm has a performance with a 3D positioning RMS error of 1.2 m, 3D velocity RMS error of 0.02 m/s and a pulse per second (PPS) RMS error of 11.8ns. Simulations with MATLAB show that it can effectively detect and dispose outliers, and further on outperforms other algorithms in comparison.

  • Introduction The ansa peduncularis is a composite of white matter fiber bundles closely packed together that sweeps around the cerebral peduncle. The exact components of the ansa peduncularis and their anatomical trajectories are still not established firmly in the literature. Objective The aim of this study was to examine the topographical anatomy of the ansa peduncularis and its subcomponents using the fiber dissection and tractography techniques. Methods Ten formalin-fixed brains were prepared according to Klingler's method and dissected by the fiber dissection technique from the lateral, medial and inferior surfaces. The ansa peduncularis was also traced using high definition fiber tracking (HDFT) from the MRI data of twenty healthy adults and a 1021-subject template from the Human Connectome Project. Results The ventral amygdalofugal pathway system includes white matter fiber bundles with a topographically close relation as they sweep around the cerebral peduncle and contribute to form the ansa peduncularis amygdaloseptal fibers connect the amygdala and anterior temporal cortex to the septal region and amygdalohypothalamic fibers project from the amygdala to the hypothalamus. Additionally, from the amygdala and anterior temporal cortex, amygdalothalamic fibers project to the medial thalamic region. The ansa lenticularis, which connects the globus pallidus to the thalamus, was not shown in our study. Conclusion The study demonstrated the trajectory of the ansa peduncularis and its subcomponents, based on fiber dissection and tractography, improving our understanding of human brain anatomical connectivity.The steroidogenic acute regulatory (StAR) protein performs the delivery of cholesterol from the outer to inner mitochondrial membrane. However, there are only few reports regarding the characterization and expression of StAR protein in non-mammalian vertebrates. In this study, StAR protein sequence of Rhinella arenarum has been characterized and deduced from interrenal and testis cDNA sequences. StAR encodes a 285 amino acid protein with a conserved domain containing putative lipid binding sites. In vitro incubations showed that expression of StAR mRNA in testis, determined by qPCR, and testosterone synthesis determined by radioimmunoassay were stimulated after treatment with hCG and 8Br-cAMP. However, StAR mRNA expression results obtained with hCG show a higher stimulation than those obtained with 8Br-cAMP, even though steroidogenic production is the same with both treatments.The African bonytongue (Heterotis niloticus) is an excellent candidate for fish farming because it has outstanding biological characteristics and zootechnical performances. However, the absence of sexual dimorphism does not favor its reproduction in captivity or the understanding of its reproductive behavior. Moreover, no molecular data related to its reproduction is yet available. This study therefore focuses on the structural identification of the different molecular actors of vitellogenesis expressed in the pituitary gland, the liver and the ovary of H. niloticus. A transcriptomic approach based on de novo RNA sequencing of the pituitary gland, ovary and liver of females in vitellogenesis led to the creation of three transcriptomes. In silico analysis of these transcriptomes identified the sequences of pituitary hormones such as prolactin (PRL), luteinizing hormone (LH) and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) and their ovarian receptors (PRLR, FSHR, LHR). In the liver and ovary, estrogen receptors (ER) beta and gamma, liver vitellogenins (VtgB and VtgC) and their ovarian receptors (VLDLR) were identified. Finally, the partial transcript of an ovarian Vtg weakly expressed compared to hepatic Vtg was identified based on structural criteria. Moreover, a proteomic approach carried out from mucus revealed the presence of one Vtg exclusively in females in vitellogenesis. Farm animals are usually kept under confined housing conditions, have close contact with each other and with soiled environments and may thus be exposed to contamination with urine, feces and saliva, which are known to contain substantial concentrations of cortisol or its metabolites. The Malaysia Stroke Council is concerned regarding the level of care given to stroke patients during this pandemic. During the recent National Stroke Workflow Steering Committee meeting, a guide was made based on the currently available evidences to assist Malaysian physicians providing acute stroke care in the hospital setting in order to provide the best stroke care while maintaining their own safety. The guide comprises of prehospital stroke awareness, hyperacute stroke care, stroke care unit and intensive care unit admission, post-stroke rehabilitation and secondary prevention practice. We report on a term neonate who presented to the Department of Paediatric Surgery, Sabah Women and Children's Hospital, Malaysia with delayed passage of meconium and intestinal obstruction, wherein the lower contrast showed a claw sign. This was a good clue that this neonate had intrauterine intussusception and this suspicion was confirmed upon laparotomy. We found an ileo-ileal intussusception causing ileal atresia, requiring resection and primary anastomosis.Chest X-ray is valuable in the primary care setting in helping clinicians to confirm the underlying findings of the respiratory and cardiovascular systems. This view also includes the lower cervical vertebrae region which is helpful in elaborating the findings surrounding the neck. We examined the intertester reliability of using the modified musculoskeletal impairment schema for classifying participants sitting at computers for prolonged times.

    Fifty participants were examined independently by each therapist using a test-retest design. Each therapist assigned an musculoskeletal impairment classification upon completion of the examination. The agreement percentages and the kappa coefficient were used to evaluate intertester reliability in classifying participants with prolonged sitting.

    The percentage agreement between the 2 examiners for participants who maintained the sitting posture for prolonged times was 84%. The calculated kappa coefficient was 0.73, reflecting a substantial level of agreement.

    Ninety-one patients with MND were randomly assigned into 1 of 3 groups that received 4 weeks' treatment group A, KT; group B, PCE; and group C, both interventions. Neck pain, LS root mean square (RMS), and median frequency (MDF) were measured pretreatment and post-treatment with the Numerical Pain Rating Scale and surface electromyography, respectively, by an assessor blinded to the patients' allocation.

    Multivariate analysis of variance indicates a statistically significant group-by-time interaction (P = .000). Pain intensity was significantly reduced in group C more than in group B (P = .001).
