    OBJECTIVE  The aim of this study is to evaluate the ability of the Newborn Infant Parasympathetic Evaluation (NIPE) index to detect the response to nociceptive stimuli in nonanesthetized infants and to compare these results to simultaneous scoring by behavioral scales. In total, 5 minutes of tidal breathing was recorded using SLP (Thora-3Di, PneumaCare Ltd, Cambridge, U.K.) in each infant. Various tidal breathing parameters including timing indices, flow-based parameters, and regional parameters were obtained from SLP data. RESULTS  A total of 57 infants underwent measurements in the study. Evaluable recordings from 42 term and 11 late preterm infants were analyzed. Median gestational age and birthweight of the infants were 38 (37-39) weeks and 3,195 (2,790-3,585) g, respectively. In terms of flow-based parameters, "tidal inspiratory flow at 50% of inspiratory volume divided by tidal expiratory flow at 50% of expiratory volume" was 1.29 (1.13-1.53). Relative contribution of the thorax to each breath in percentage was measured as 38.67 (28.21-43.60). Median values of left-right hemithoracic asynchrony and thoraco-abdominal asynchrony were 6.92 (5.35-9.04) and 17.96 (12.98-36.44) degrees in the study population, respectively. There were no differences in tidal breathing parameters except "hemithoracic asynchrony" between term and late preterm infants. Hemithoracic asynchrony was significantly lower in term neonates than late preterms. CONCLUSION  SLP was found to be feasible to obtain measures of tidal breathing parameters in newborns and it could be performed successfully even in the first days of life. SUBJECTS AND METHODS Caregivers of patients aged 1 to 11 years undergoing tonsillectomy (N = 764) were surveyed 7 to 21 days after surgery regarding pain control, education to use nonopioid analgesics first, and opioid use. Respondents who were not prescribed opioids or had missing data were excluded. Logistic regression modeled caregiver-reported pain control as a function of service guideline implementation (December 2018) recommending 20 rather than 30 doses for postoperative opioid prescriptions and caregiver-reported analgesic education, adjusting for patient demographics. RESULTS Among 430 respondents (56% response), 387 patients were included. The sample was 43% female with a mean age of 5.0 years (SD, 2.5). Pain control was reported as good (226 respondents, 58%) or adequate/poor (161 respondents, 42%). Mean opioid prescription quantity was 27 doses (SD, 7.9) before and 21 doses (SD, 6.1) after guideline implementation (P less then .001). Education to use nonopioids first was reported by 308 respondents (80%). In regression, prescribing guideline implementation was not associated with pain control (adjusted odds ratio, 1.3; 95% CI, 0.9-2.0; P = .22), but caregiver-reported education to use nonopioids first was associated with a higher odds of good pain control (adjusted odds ratio, 1.9; 95% CI, 1.1-3.2; P = .02). CONCLUSION Caregiver education to use nonopioid analgesics first may be a modifiable health care practice to improve pain control as postoperative opioid prescription quantities are reduced.Many experts in abdominal wall reconstruction believe that the combination of simultaneous ipsilateral anterior component separation (ACS) and posterior component separation (PCS) is contraindicated. We performed ipsilateral endoscopic ACS and either endoscopic or open PCS-transversus abdominis release (TAR) in 5 fresh cadaver models. The full length of the semilunar line and the lateral abdominal wall remained well reinforced by 2 complete layers, comprising the internal oblique (IO) and TA muscles and their investing fasciae. Myofascial releases occurred 4 cm (median) apart. Additionally, we reviewed computed tomography images at 1 month and 1 year after PCS-TAR in 17 patients (30 PCS-TARs). Lateral displacement of the TA relative to the rectus abdominis (RA) was significant only at the superior mesenteric artery level, where it was less then 1 cm (median). Muscle mass changed minimally over time. Several studies showed that abdominal wall reconstruction after PCS-TAR results in compensatory muscular hypertrophy of the RA, external oblique (EO), and IO muscles and provides better quality of life and improved core physiology. These changes did not occur when the midline was not restored. Theoretically, endoscopic ACS-EO may be added to PCS-TAR to avoid partially bridged mesh repair in patients in whom complete midline restoration is impossible via PCS-TAR alone. RESULTS A total of 690 unique articles were identified, of which 60 underwent full-text review. Twenty-six articles were included in final analysis, comprising 18 studies on TORS (834 patients) and 11 studies on PA (294 patients). Mean differences of apnea-hypopnea index, ESS, and lowest oxygen saturation for TORS were -23.92, -7.6, and 5.83% (all P less then .01). Corresponding values for PA were -22.07, -4.14, and 5.48% (all P less then .00001). TORS had greater ESS reduction than PA (P = .02). Follow-up duration was shorter in TORS than PA (mean ± SD 4.2 ± 2.6 vs 4.6 ± 1.4 months, P = .0482). Surgical success rates in TORS and PA were similar (57.6% vs 60.3%, P = .4474). Postoperative bleeding occurred less frequently in TORS versus PA (3.3% vs 7.5%, P = .0103).     AIMS Refugees and asylum seekers are at high risk of mental health problems such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and depression. Elucidating the occurrence and correlates of these problems in specific resettled refugee populations may be helpful in informing tailored prevention and health promotion programs. We sought to elucidate the occurrence and correlates of depressive symptoms among Afghan refugees resettled in Launceston, a regional town of Australia. METHODS We conducted a cross-sectional survey of 66 resettled Afghan refugees residing in Launceston in April 2019. We used the Hopkins symptoms checklist (HSCL-25) and the post migration living difficulties scale (PMLD) to measure depression symptoms and post-migration variables, respectively. Demographic characteristics and levels of physical activity were also assessed. Multivariate analysis was used to examine factors associated with depressive symptoms. RESULTS High levels of depressive symptoms were reported by 21.2% of participants (95% CI 12.1%-33.0%) and were more common among female participants (41.2%, 95% CI 18.4%-67.1%) than male participants (14.3%, 95% CI 5.9%-27.2%). Isolation (loneliness, being or feeling alone) (OR = 19.5, 95% CI 1.9-203.5) and physical inactivity (OR = 9.2, 95% CI 1.8-45.8) were the only variables independently associated with depressive symptoms. CONCLUSIONS Depressive symptoms were common among Afghan refugees living in Launceston, particularly women, and were associated with isolation and physical inactivity. The two acceptors, IPTBO-4Cl and MF1, have similar lowest unoccupied molecular orbital levels, which is beneficial for efficient electron transport in the ternary active layer. The PCE of optimized ternary OSCs arrives to 15.74% by incorporating 30 wt% MF1 in acceptors, resulting from the simultaneously increased JSC of 23.20 mA cm-2 , VOC of 0.897 V, and FF of 75.64% in comparison with IPTBO-4Cl based binary OSCs. However, the role of GPR120 on macrophage foam cell formation, the hallmark of atherosclerotic plaques, has not been verified. In this study, we found for the first time that stimulation of GPR120 by its agonist GW9508 elevated the expression of ATP-binding cassette transporters (ABC) A1 and ABCG1 in THP-1 macrophage-derived foam cells and Raw264.7 macrophages, and promoted ABCA1- and ABCG1-mediated cholesterol efflux and reduced cellular cholesteryl ester (CE) content as well. In addition, GPR120 activation was accompanied with the stimulation of AMPK pathway in macrophages; however, the effect of GPR120 on macrophage cholesterol efflux was largely abolished by AMPK inhibition. Moreover, the AMPK activity and the expression of ABCA1 and ABCG1 were markedly abrogated by knockdown of GPR120, or application of phospholipase C (PLC) inhibitor, calcium chelator, or CaMKK inhibitor. Because only free cholesterol can be effluxed from macrophages, we found that activation of AMPK could lead to increase both neutral CEs hydrolysis by upregulation of neutral cholesterol ester hydrolase expression and acid CEs hydrolysis by activation of ULK1. With the relative flux and the transmission rate as indexes, the scanning electron microscopy(SEM) and the electrochemical impedance spectroscopy(EIS) were used to analyze the permeation mechanism of different phenolic acid components. The results showed phenolic acids with similar molecular weight had different permeation behaviors, with decreased relative flux and increased solute permeation with the increase of solute concentration. According to the permeation behavior analyzed by the molecular structure of solute, the transmission rate of phenolic acids increased with the increase of the number of hydroxyl, and the order of substituent positions of phenolic acids based on the permeation rate as follows para-substituted > meta-substitution > ortho-substitution. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy reflected the role of charge repulsion in the membrane process; that is to say, the greater the resistance is, the less the solute permeation is.   • This paper presents a numerical study on the influence of material parameters and loading variability in the plastic crack tip opening displacement (CTOD) results. For this purpose, AA7050-T6 was selected as reference material and a middle-cracked tension specimen geometry was considered. The studied input parameters were the Young's modulus, Poisson's ratio, isotropic and kinematic hardening parameters and the maximum and minimum applied loads. The variability of the input parameters follows a Gaussian distribution. First, screening design-of-experiments were performed to identify the most influential parameters. Two types of screening designs were considered one-factor-at-a-time and fractional factorial designs. Three analysis criteria were adopted, based on main effect, index of influence and analysis of variance. Afterwards, metamodels were constructed to establish relationships between the most influential parameters and the plastic crack tip opening displacement (CTOD) range, based on two types of designs Face-Centered Central Composite Design and Box-Behnken design. Finally, the metamodels were validated, enabling the expeditious evaluation of the variability in the plastic CTOD range; in addition, the variability in the fatigue crack growth rate was also evaluated.Mutations arise in the genomes of progeny viruses during infection. Mutations that occur in epitopes targeted by host antibodies allow the progeny virus to escape the host adaptive, B-cell mediated antibody immune response. Major epitopes have been identified in influenza B virus (IBV) hemagglutinin (HA) protein. However, IBV strains maintain a seasonal presence in the human population and changes in IBV genomes in response to immune pressure are not well characterized. There are two lineages of IBV that have circulated in the human population since the 1980s, B-Victoria and B-Yamagata. It is hypothesized that early exposure to one influenza subtype leads to immunodominance. Subsequent seasonal vaccination or exposure to new subtypes may modify subsequent immune responses, which, in turn, results in selection of escape mutations in the viral genome. Here we show that while some mutations do occur in known epitopes suggesting antibody escape, many mutations occur in other parts of the HA protein. Analysis of mutations outside of the known epitopes revealed that these mutations occurred at the same amino acid position in viruses from each of the two IBV lineages. Seven out of 280 LAB isolates were selected due to their bacteriocinogenic properties and identified by 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis as Pediococcus pentosaceus (n = 6) and Lactobacillus plantarum (n = 1). Virulence factors and antibiotic resistances were not detected for any of the isolates. Except for L. plantarum R23, all the isolates were able to survive through the simulated gastrointestinal tract conditions. Only P. pentosaceus CFF4 was able to adhere to Caco-2 cells after the simulated gastrointestinal tract passage. In conclusion, even though in vivo studies should be performed, P. pentosaceus CFF4, which was also able to inhibit the growth of foodborne pathogens in vitro, seems to be a potential probiotic to be used in the food industry.Locating gas concentration changes in widespread locations can be conducive to environmental atmospheric detection, gas emissions monitoring, production process control, etc. A time domain multiplexed dual-comb system for segment-resolved gas concentration measurement is reported in this work. Both absorption spectra and path lengths for multiple path-segments in a target path can be derived from the time domain separated interferograms and then the equivalent gas concentrations in each segment can be retrieved separately. A benchtop experiment aiming at a target path with three path-segments of different gases has been demonstrated. The relative deviation of gas concentration retrieval is 1.08% in 1 s. Besides, additional numerical simulations prove that the crosstalk between the interference signals affects the spectrum analysis by no more than 0.1% for a kilometer-long atmospheric absorption detection. Therefore, achieving a gridded measurement of regional gas concentration in the open air can be foreseen using this method.The Egyptian mongoose (Herpestes ichneumon) is a medium-size carnivore that, in Europe, is restricted to Iberia. The bio-ecology of this species remains to be elucidated in several dimensions, including gut microbiota that is nowadays recognized as a fundamental component of mammals. In this work, we investigated the gut microbiota of this herpestid by single-molecule real-time sequencing of twenty paired male (n = 10) and female (n = 10) intestinal samples. This culture-independent approach enabled microbial profiling based on 16S rDNA and investigation of taxonomical and functional features. The core gut microbiome of the adult subpopulation was dominated by Firmicutes, Fusobacteria, Actinobacteria, and Proteobacteria. Eight genera were uniquely found in adults and five in non-adults. When comparing gut bacterial communities across sex, four genera were exclusive of females and six uniquely found in males. Despite these compositional distinctions, alpha- and beta-diversity analyses showed no statistically significant differences across sex or between adult and non-adult specimens.

    OBJECTIVE To assess neurofilaments as neurodegenerative biomarkers in serum of patients with Friedreich's ataxia. METHODS Single molecule array measurements of neurofilament light (NfL) and heavy chain (pNfH) in 99 patients with genetically confirmed Friedreich's ataxia. Correlation of NfL/pNfH serum levels with disease severity, disease duration, age, age at onset, and GAA repeat length. RESULTS Median serum levels of NfL were 21.2 pg/ml (range 3.6-49.3) in controls and 26.1 pg/ml (0-78.1) in Friedreich's ataxia (p = 0.002). pNfH levels were 23.5 pg/ml (13.3-43.3) in controls and 92 pg/ml (3.1-303) in Friedreich's ataxia (p = 0.0004). NfL levels were significantly increased in younger patients (age 16-31 years, p  less then  0.001) and patients aged 32-47 years (p = 0.008), but not in patients of age 48 years and older (p = 0.41). In a longitudinal assessment, there was no difference in NfL levels in 14 patients with repeated sampling 2 years after baseline measurement. Levels of NfL correlated inversely with GAA1 repeat length (r = - 0.24, p = 0.02) but not with disease severity (r = - 0.13, p = 0.22), disease duration (r = - 0.06, p = 0.53), or age at onset (r = 0.05, p = 0.62). CONCLUSION Serum levels of NfL and pNfH are elevated in Friedreich's ataxia, but differences to healthy controls decrease with increasing age. Long-term longitudinal data are required to explore whether this reflects a selection bias from early death of more severely affected individuals or a slowing down of the neurodegenerative process with age. In a pilot study over 2 years of follow-up-a period relevant for biomarkers indicating treatment effects-we found NfL levels to be stable.Spiders are important bio-control agents of rice insect pests such as plant- and leafhoppers. To investigate temporal changes in spider prey and variations in prey due to landscape structure around rice fields, carbon and nitrogen stable isotopes of rice field arthropods were analysed over three consecutive sampling dates during the rice cropping season. Initial isotope composition of gnats and midges emerging from submersed rice fields indicates a larval algae diet, while later values suggest a switch to rice-derived carbon. Initial δ13C values of plant- and leafhoppers were higher in fields of rice-heterogeneous landscapes, indicating migration from source populations feeding on C4 grasses into rice fields; later, their δ13C values approached those of rice. Isotope values of web-building and cursorial spiders in the earliest samples indicate aquatic gnat and midge prey. The later shift toward terrestrial herbivore prey was more pronounced for small than for larger species and in rice paddies near permanent vegetation, indicating use of prey from the surrounding landscape. The results suggest that rice field spiders are supported by three different carbon pools (1) aquatic carbon originating from algae and (2) legacy carbon from previous growing cycles, both incorporated via between-season predation on gnats and midges, and (3) carbon from the current rice season incorporated via herbivore prey. In conclusion, fostering aquatic midge and gnat larvae, e.g. via mulching, and integrating rice fields into rice-heterogeneous landscapes likely strengthens biological control of pest species in rice paddies by supporting high populations of spiders between cropping seasons.Even a cursory view on the debate about intersectionality reveals that this is not a coherent theory or a uniform approach to the investigation of multiple inequalities. METHODS Single molecule array measurements of neurofilament light (NfL) and heavy chain (pNfH) in 99 patients with genetically confirmed Friedreich's ataxia. Correlation of NfL/pNfH serum levels with disease severity, disease duration, age, age at onset, and GAA repeat length. RESULTS Median serum levels of NfL were 21.2 pg/ml (range 3.6-49.3) in controls and 26.1 pg/ml (0-78.1) in Friedreich's ataxia (p = 0.002). pNfH levels were 23.5 pg/ml (13.3-43.3) in controls and 92 pg/ml (3.1-303) in Friedreich's ataxia (p = 0.0004). NfL levels were significantly increased in younger patients (age 16-31 years, p  less then  0.001) and patients aged 32-47 years (p = 0.008), but not in patients of age 48 years and older (p = 0.41). In a longitudinal assessment, there was no difference in NfL levels in 14 patients with repeated sampling 2 years after baseline measurement. Levels of NfL correlated inversely with GAA1 repeat length (r = - 0.24, p = 0.02) but not with disease severity (r = - 0.13, p = 0.22), disease duration (r = - 0.06, p = 0.53), or age at onset (r = 0.05, p = 0.62). To investigate temporal changes in spider prey and variations in prey due to landscape structure around rice fields, carbon and nitrogen stable isotopes of rice field arthropods were analysed over three consecutive sampling dates during the rice cropping season. Initial isotope composition of gnats and midges emerging from submersed rice fields indicates a larval algae diet, while later values suggest a switch to rice-derived carbon. Initial δ13C values of plant- and leafhoppers were higher in fields of rice-heterogeneous landscapes, indicating migration from source populations feeding on C4 grasses into rice fields; later, their δ13C values approached those of rice. Isotope values of web-building and cursorial spiders in the earliest samples indicate aquatic gnat and midge prey. The later shift toward terrestrial herbivore prey was more pronounced for small than for larger species and in rice paddies near permanent vegetation, indicating use of prey from the surrounding landscape. The results suggest that rice field spiders are supported by three different carbon pools (1) aquatic carbon originating from algae and (2) legacy carbon from previous growing cycles, both incorporated via between-season predation on gnats and midges, and (3) carbon from the current rice season incorporated via herbivore prey. The comparison of 6 DOF kinematics and ROM of 6 DOF kinematics were performed atics compared with non-anatomical ACLR. Results PPi in EDTA and CTAD samples were lower in PXE subjects than in controls (1.11±0.26 vs. 1.43±0.41 µM/L and 0.35±0.15 vs. 0.61±0.18 µM/L respectively, P less then 0.05). Hence, this study is to determine the prevalence of social isolation and its association with gait speed, frailty, cognition, depression and comorbidities amongst community-dwelling older adults. METHODS Social isolation, depression, frailty and perceived general health were assessed using 6-item Lubben Social Network Scale (LSNS-6), Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS), FRAIL scale and EuroQol EQ-5D-5L questionnaire which includes EQ Visual Analogue Scale (EQ-VAS), respectively. Cognition was assessed using the Chinese Mini Mental State Examination (cMMSE), while physical performance test included gait speed and short physical performance battery test. Binary logistic regression was performed to determine the influence of socio-demographic, medical, functional and cognitive variables on social isolation. RESULTS Out of 202 participants, 27.7% were robust, 66.8% of participants were pre-frail, and 5.4% of participants were frail. Almost half (45.5%, n = 92) of the participants were found to be at risk of social isolation. A poor social network was negatively associated with mean gait speed (OR = 0.674, CI 0.464-0.979, p = 0.039), EQ-VAS (OR = 0.561, CI 0.390-0.806, p  less then  0.01) and cMMSE (OR = 0.630, 95% CI 0.413-0.960, p = 0.032). TdT positivity was defined as expression on ≥ 10% of the gated cells. Of 48 cases, 12 (25%) were positive for TdT [median expression rate of TdT 0.9% (range 0-86.9%)]. Hence, this study is to determine the prevalence of social isolation and its association with gait speed, frailty, cognition, depression and comorbidities amongst community-dwelling older adults. METHODS Social isolation, depression, frailty and perceived general health were assessed using 6-item Lubben Social Network Scale (LSNS-6), Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS), FRAIL scale and EuroQol EQ-5D-5L questionnaire which includes EQ Visual Analogue Scale (EQ-VAS), respectively. Cognition was assessed using the Chinese Mini Mental State Examination (cMMSE), while physical performance test included gait speed and short physical performance battery test. Binary logistic regression was performed to determine the influence of socio-demographic, medical, functional and cognitive variables on social isolation. RESULTS Out of 202 participants, 27.7% were robust, 66.8% of participants were pre-frail, and 5.4% of participants were frail. Almost half (45.5%, n = 92) of the participants were found to be at risk of social isolation.
