  • Purpose Social participation is a key determinant of healthy aging, yet little is known about how people with Parkinson's disease manage social living. The associations and dose-response relationships between refined grains intake and obesity were investigated using multivariable logistic regression analyses and restricted cubic spline (RCS) models. There was a positive association between refined grains intake and abdominal obesity for all participants (forth quartile OR, 1.313; 95% CI, 1.103-1.760; p  less then  .05) and this association persisted in low energy, low carbohydrate, high fat and high protein level subgroups. A range of favourable refined grains intake was 88-116 g/d (3-4 servings/d), which might decrease the likelihood of obesity for Chinese residents. Further prospective studies are needed to confirm these findings.The aim of this prospective study (Clinical Trials Identifier NCT02993744) was to detect the effect of fetal lung maturation with betamethasone on the maternal inflammatory parameters C-reactive protein (CRP) and leukocytes. The blood results of 75 patients in the week of gestation (WOG) 23/0 to 34/6 under threat of preterm delivery and treated with betamethasone were analyzed. Sixty-five pregnant women without complications served as control group. Leukocyte numbers increased significantly about 2.4 thsd./µL (±3.3 standard deviation), with a confidence interval of 95% from 1.5 to 3.2 (p  less then  .001). Calculations for CRP were done with logarithmized values. CRP decreased significantly (p  less then  .001) by the factor 0.465, with a 95% confidence interval from 0.376 to 0.576. The results of this study can be used in clinical routine as a decision support, to come to conclusions about inflammatory processes during lung maturation.Atrophic carcinoma and microcystic carcinoma have previously been classified as variants of conventional acinar adenocarcinoma. In this article, we studied 4 cases of atrophic carcinoma and 4 cases of limited microcystic carcinoma. We found an incidence of 0.8% in 250 needle prostatic biopsies and 1.3% of atrophic carcinoma in 150 radical prostatectomies. Microcystic carcinomas were found in 3 prostatectomies (1.2%) and in 1 needle biopsy (0.67%). The useful histological criteria for atrophic carcinoma included the irregular disposition of the glands, infiltrative pattern, "rigid" luminal borders, and intraluminal secretions. Cytological changes included scant cytoplasm, nucleomegaly, hyperchromatic nuclei, and visible nucleoli. The glands of the microcystic carcinoma differ from the benign glands because the malignant ones show a markedly greater dilatation and exhibit rigidity of glandular lumens. In some cases of microcystic carcinoma, the nuclei were flattened, small, and hyperchromatic; therefore, they can be difficult to recognize as malignant.Purposes To explore OCT-A abnormalities in CHM carriersMethods CHM carriers and age-matched controls were consecutively enrolled at the Eye Clinic in Florence. All patients underwent a complete ophthalmic examination, fundus photography, fundus autofluorescence (FAF) and OCT examinations. OCT-A images of the superficial capillary plexus (SCP), deep capillary plexus (DCP) and choriocapillaris slab (CC) were acquired and analyzed using ImageJ software to detect and quantify vascular density.Results Six patients (12 eyes) and 8 age-matched controls (16 eyes) were included in our study. The mean age was 45.5 ± 16.3 years (range 15-61) for the CHM carriers and 46.6 ± 12.2 (range 18-54) for controls. All CHM carriers showed fundus abnormalities. The detected mean central retinal thickness (CRT) (220 ± 18.34 vs 227 ± 15.46; p = .342) and choroidal central thickness (CCT) (271 ± 54.28 vs 275 ± 38.36; p = .760) did not differ between the carrier and the control group, respectively. Quantitative analysis of the inner retinal vasculature disclosed no significant difference of both SCP (p = .437) and DCP (p = .859) vessel density compared to the control group. Of note, a mild reduction on the vascular flow of the CC could be detected in the carrier group compared to the control group (78.896 ± 13.972 vs 80.008 ± 10.862; p = .045).Conclusions OCT-A allows us to underline the role of the retinal pigment epithelium in the CHM pathophysiology. Central inner retinal and choriocapillaris vascularization were preserved although the RPE was always involved in the CHM carrier this could support a secondary role of vascular impairment in the natural history of the disease.Purpose Cutis marmorata telangiectatica congenita (CMTC) is a rare congenital disorder typified by localized or generalized cutaneous vascular anomalies, which dissipate over time. We review the diagnostic approach to CMTC and present a comprehensive examination of its ocular manifestations. Additionally, we offer recommendations for the ophthalmologic workup for patients with CMTC. Finally, we examine the possible causes of CMTC and summarize the current efforts to establish an etiologic mechanism for this disease.Methods Thirty-three published cases of CMTC with ocular anomalies are examined in detail.Results CMTC is diagnosed based on a specific set of congenital cutaneous symptoms, principally congenital reticular erythema that is unresponsive to local warming and absence of venectasia within the skin lesions. Ocular findings are not currently employed in this diagnostic process, likely due to an incomplete understanding into their presentation, frequency, and natural history. We show that the majority of ophthalmic manifestations are congenital, with glaucoma and posterior segment anomalies, consisting of retinal perfusion defects and vascular abnormalities, as the most frequently reported findings.

  • A substantial body of work has demonstrated the importance of marital status for health, yet the vast majority of this work has studied heterosexual marriages and relationships. To understand the role of marital status in shaping health among heterosexual, lesbian, gay, and bisexual men and women, we examine data from a probability-based sample of adults living in 40 U.S. states for selected years between 2011-2015. We test two physical health outcomes-poor-to-fair self-rated health and cardiovascular disease-and present predicted probabilities and pairwise comparisons from logistic regression models before and after adjustment for demographic characteristics, socioeconomic status, health behaviors, and depression. Overall, findings reveal some important similarities and differences in the relationships between marital status and health by sexual orientation and gender. First, the health benefits of marriage extend to sexual minority adults, relative to adults who are either formerly or never married. Among heterosexual adults, adjusted models also highlight the healthy status of never-married adults. Second, the health benefits associated with intimate relationships appear less dependent on legal marriage among sexual minorities than among heterosexual adults. Third, we document a persistent health disadvantage for bisexual adults compared with heterosexual adults, particularly among women who are formerly married, indicating some elevated health vulnerability among selected sexual minority women. Fourth, associations between sexual orientation and health are more similar across marital status groups for men than women. METHODS Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) was used to infer corticospinal excitability (CSE), intracortical facilitation (ICF), short and long-interval intracortical inhibition (SICI and LICI) and silent period duration prior to and following each training session during a 2-week heavy-load strength-training period. RESULTS Following 2-weeks of strength-training, increases in strength (15.5%, P = 0.01) were accompanied by an increase in CSE (44%, P = 0.006) and reductions in both silent period duration (14%, P  less then  0.0001) and SICI (35%, P = 0.0004). Early training sessions acutely increased CSE and ICF, and acutely reduced silent period duration and SICI. However, later training sessions failed to modulate SICI and ICF, with substantial adaptations occurring offline between training sessions. No acute or retained changes in LICI were observed. Co-contraction of antagonists reduced by 36% following 2-weeks of strength-training. CONCLUSIONS Collectively, these results indicate that corticospinal plasticity occurs within and between training sessions throughout a training period in distinct early and later stages that are modulated by separate mechanisms of plasticity. METHODS Ten participants (9 men and 1 woman 45 ± 10 years, BMI 28 ± 5) with unilateral Achilles tendinopathy were included. Intra-tendinous motion was assessed using ultrasonography during dynamic unilateral heel rises in standing and seated position. Speckle displacement was determined using a cross-correlation algorithm, in four independent rows, representing superficial and deep tendon layers. RESULTS The most superficial layer displaced less than the deepest in all condition, except standing for the tendinopathic leg. There was a strong tendency (p = 0.054) for the displacement difference being reduced in the tendinopathic tendon (Tendinopathic side 0.52 ± 0.16 mm vs. asymptomatic contralateral side 1.02 ± 0.18 mm). Glucose variability (GV) was expressed as the coefficient of variation (CV) [calculated from self-monitoring of blood glucose (SMBG) values], and hypoglycaemia was defined as glucose values less then 3.9 mmol/l. The data on maternal and neonatal outcomes were collected from obstetrical records. RESULTS Duration of the treatment was 8.8 ± 5.3 years in the CSII and 12.6 ± 8.0 years in the MDI group.

  • This technique is validated by imaging the UV transmittance of several prototype SU-8 3D microstructures, including those comprising hidden hollow subsurface features, as well as SU-8 thin-films, and verifying the measured data through SEM. These results suggest that UV transmittance imaging offers a cost-effective, non-destructive technique to quickly measure and identify SU-8 microstructures with surface and hidden subsurface features unlike existing techniques.The traditional algorithm for compressive reconstruction has high computational complexity. In order to reduce the reconstruction time of compressive sensing, deep learning networks have proven to be an effective solution. In this paper, we have developed a single-pixel imaging system based on deep learning and designed the binary sampling Res2Net reconstruction network (Bsr2-Net) model suitable for binary matrix sampling. In the experiments, we compared the structural similarity, peak signal-to-noise ratio, and reconstruction time using different reconstruction methods. Experimental results show that the Bsr2-Net is superior to several deep learning networks recently reported and closes to the most advanced reconstruction algorithms.Temperature gradients in ceramic light water reactor (LWR) uranium dioxide (UO2) nuclear fuel pellets generate thermal stresses that cause fractures in the fuel, which begins early in the life of fresh fuel. The combination of heating due to fission and forced convective cooling on the exterior of LWR fuel rods generates a temperature profile that is difficult to replicate outside the reactor environment. In this study, a state-of-the-art experimental setup using electrical heating to study certain aspects of temperature driven fracture was built, and surrogate fuel materials such as ceria (CeO2) were used to validate the system. Cracking experiments were conducted on these surrogates by inducing reactivity-initiated-accident like temperature gradients in the pellets via induction and direct resistance heating. Induction heating was done using copper coils and molybdenum susceptors, which heated the surrogates to a threshold temperature that is sufficiently high for the fuel material to conduct current. Thereward-looking infrared thermal camera to capture the temperature profiles. The effect of optical factors and electronic factors on timing jitter and sensitivity of LOS was quantitatively studied separately based on femtosecond optical frequency combs. These factors include the intensity of received signal light, the repetition frequency difference between two combs, the number of bits of the analog-to-digital converter, and the gain of the balanced detector. According to the experimental results, the performance of the LOS system was optimized and the minimum timing jitter of LOS was 2.06 fs when the power of the received signal light was 1 μW. Moreover, the sensitivity reached 3.03 nW when using a balanced detector with 160 K gain.The triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) has been attracting attention for electronic devices and sensors consuming low power. Among the few operating modes of the TENG, the rotation-based TENG provides a more continuous and smoother output than the linear-motion-based TENG. To evaluate the output performance of the rotation-based TENG precisely and quantitatively, a test bed that adjusts the eccentricity error, tilt angle error, contact force, and rotational speed is proposed. The test bed includes a motor, torque sensor, 2-axis planar stage, 2-axis tilting stage, 1-axis vertical stage, 3-degree-of-freedom force/torque (3-DOF F/T) sensor, and voice coil actuator. With the proposed test bed, the effects of the eccentricity error, tilt angle error, contact force, and rotational speed on the electrical output performance of the rotation-based TENG are analyzed. The test bed is expected to be used for quantitative performance analysis and comparative study of various rotation-based TENGs, and it can help improve the performance and reliability of rotation-based TENGs.We report on the design, construction, and characterization of a 10 m-long high-performance magnetic shield for very long baseline atom interferometry. We achieve residual fields below 4 nT and longitudinal inhomogeneities below 2.5 nT/m over 8 m along the longitudinal direction.     This technique is validated by imaging the UV transmittance of several prototype SU-8 3D microstructures, including those comprising hidden hollow subsurface features, as well as SU-8 thin-films, and verifying the measured data through SEM. These results suggest that UV transmittance imaging offers a cost-effective, non-destructive technique to quickly measure and identify SU-8 microstructures with surface and hidden subsurface features unlike existing techniques.The traditional algorithm for compressive reconstruction has high computational complexity. In order to reduce the reconstruction time of compressive sensing, deep learning networks have proven to be an effective solution. In this paper, we have developed a single-pixel imaging system based on deep learning and designed the binary sampling Res2Net reconstruction network (Bsr2-Net) model suitable for binary matrix sampling. In the experiments, we compared the structural similarity, peak signal-to-noise ratio, and reconstruction time using different reconstruction methods. We aimed to extend our previously published data about mental health in patients with MDs, also investigating coping profiles of both themselves and their parents. Furthermore, we wanted to verify whether psychological adaptation of patients can be predicted by coping strategies, taking also into account physical impairment, cognitive level and socioeconomic status. METHODS 112 patients with MDs, aged 2-32 were included. Their emotional and behavioural features were assessed through parent- and self-report Achenbach System for Empirically Based Assessment questionnaires and Strength and Difficulties Questionnaires. Development and Well-Being Assessment or Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule were administered to confirm suspected diagnoses. Coping profile of both parents and patients was assessed through the self-administered New Italian Version of the Coping Orientation to the Problems Experienced questionnaire and its relationship with emotional/behavioural outcome was examined in linear regression analyses. RESULTS High prevalence of intellectual disability and autism spectrum disorders was confirmed in Duchenne MD. Despite the high rate of internalizing symptomatology, we did not report higher rate of psychopathological disorders compared to general population. Parents tend to rely more on positive reinterpretation and less on disengagement coping. Avoidance coping, whether used by parents or patients, and ID, predicted increased emotional/behavioural problems. CONCLUSIONS Psychosocial interventions should address problems of anxiety and depression that people with MDs frequently experience, even through fostering parents' and childrens' engagement coping over disengagement coping.BACKGROUND The prevalence and risk factors of low bone mineral density (BMD) in Asian patients newly diagnosed with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) have not been fully suggested. AIMS We aimed to examine the prevalence and risk factors of low BMD in young Korean patients newly diagnosed with IBD. METHODS We prospectively enrolled 132 patients aged less than 50 years and newly diagnosed with IBD from six tertiary referral centers in Korea between November 2014 and April 2017. BMD was measured by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry, and then the Z-score was determined. We defined low BMD as a Z-score ≤ - 1.0. RESULTS Of 68 patients with ulcerative colitis (UC), 22 (32.4%) had low BMD. Also, of 64 patients with Crohn's disease (CD), 24 (37.5%) showed low BMD. Results from multivariate regression analysis identified the risk factors for low BMD as a high level of alkaline phosphatase (ALP) (≥ 140 U/L) (P = 0.010) in UC patients, and being underweight (body mass index ≤ 18.5 kg/m2) (P = 0.017) in CD patients. CONCLUSIONS Our study showed that about one-third of newly diagnosed IBD Asian patients had low BMD. The clinical factors associated with low BMD were a high level of ALP in UC patients, and being underweight, in CD patients. Therefore, measurements of BMD in young patients should be considered at the diagnosis of IBD.The climate change on the impact of grain production potential has significant regional differences. The case showed that the precipitation (Pre) what made changes of grain production potential was the most important factor in different geographic units. When the S-layer gene (GenBank accession number CAO89090.1) of Microcystis aeruginosa PCC7806 was expressed in Synechocystis sp. PCC6803, PCC6803 aggregated into colonial morphology. The results indicated that the S-layer could promote colony formation in Microcystis. Based on the S-layer sequences of PCC6803 and PCC7806, nine S-layer genes in other Microcystis strains were screened from the GenBank. Sequence comparing showed that the S-layers conserved regions were all located in N-terminal. The S-layers contain repeats-in-toxin (RTX) sequences with Ca2+-binding site, and their amino acid composition, hydrophobicity, isoelectric point, etc.

METHODS This population-based retrospective cohort study of singleton infants born in Alberta (April 2004-March 2005) used linked administrative and perinatal data to identify birth subtypes by underlying cause (infection/inflammation (I/I), placental dysfunction (PD), both, or neither), gestational age at delivery, and child health outcomes (neonatal morbidity and mortality, paediatric complex chronic conditions, and neurodevelopmental disorders and disabilities). Poisson regression with robust variance was used to assess differences in the (adjusted) risk ratio (RR) of each outcome by gestational age, and by cause of delivery. The fractionation into peptides less then  1 kDa was observed to improve the DPPH, ABTS, and hydroxyl radical-scavenging activities (0.19, 2.28, and 24.64 mM Trolox, respectively), angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE)-inhibitory activity (IC50 value of 0.20 ± 0.011 mg protein/mL), as well as bitter and umami tastes. The less then  1 kDa fraction was further analyzed by liquid chromatography-electrospray ionization/mass spectrometry to identify amino acid sequence associated with biological activities and flavor characteristics. Eight peptides were identified. Most of the identified peptides contained features of previously reported ACE inhibitory and antioxidant peptides, especially peptide FGGSGGPGG and FGGGGAGAGG. Evaluation of flavor characteristics using BIOPEP database demonstrated that they had high occurrence frequencies of umami peptides (ESDVVSDL, GSGVGGAK, and SSVGGGSAG) and low Q-value (938.75 to 282.22), suggesting that these peptides may be used as a fortifying health ingredient with good taste. Thus, it is important to understand the relative effectiveness of interventions for increasing donations. MATERIALS AND METHODS This systematic review used a broad search strategy to identify randomized controlled trials comparing interventions for increasing blood donations. After full-text review, 28 trials from 25 published articles were included. Sufficient data for meta-analysis were available from 27 trials. Monetary incentives were assumed to be equivalent regardless of value, and non-monetary incentives were assumed to be equivalent regardless of type. Non-incentive-based interventions identified included existing practice, letters, telephone calls, questionnaires, and the combination of a letter & telephone call. A network meta-analysis was used to pool the results from identified trials. A subgroup analysis was performed in populations of donors and non-donors as sensitivity analyses. RESULTS The best performing interventions were letter & telephone call and telephone call-only with odds ratios of 3·08 (95% CI 1·99, 4·75) and 1·99 (95% CI 1·47, 2·69) compared to existing practice, respectively. With considerable uncertainty around the pooled effect, we found no evidence that monetary incentives were effective at increasing donations compared to existing practice. Non-monetary incentives were only effective in the donor subgroup. METHODS This population-based retrospective cohort study of singleton infants born in Alberta (April 2004-March 2005) used linked administrative and perinatal data to identify birth subtypes by underlying cause (infection/inflammation (I/I), placental dysfunction (PD), both, or neither), gestational age at delivery, and child health outcomes (neonatal morbidity and mortality, paediatric complex chronic conditions, and neurodevelopmental disorders and disabilities). The fractionation into peptides less then  1 kDa was observed to improve the DPPH, ABTS, and hydroxyl radical-scavenging activities (0.19, 2.28, and 24.64 mM Trolox, respectively), angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE)-inhibitory activity (IC50 value of 0.20 ± 0.011 mg protein/mL), as well as bitter and umami tastes. The less then  1 kDa fraction was further analyzed by liquid chromatography-electrospray ionization/mass spectrometry to identify amino acid sequence associated with biological activities and flavor characteristics. Thus, it is important to understand the relative effectiveness of interventions for increasing donations. MATERIALS AND METHODS This systematic review used a broad search strategy to identify randomized controlled trials comparing interventions for increasing blood donations. After full-text review, 28 trials from 25 published articles were included. Sufficient data for meta-analysis were available from 27 trials. Monetary incentives were assumed to be equivalent regardless of value, and non-monetary incentives were assumed to be equivalent regardless of type. Non-incentive-based interventions identified included existing practice, letters, telephone calls, questionnaires, and the combination of a letter & telephone call. A network meta-analysis was used to pool the results from identified trials. A subgroup analysis was performed in populations of donors and non-donors as sensitivity analyses. RESULTS The best performing interventions were letter & telephone call and telephone call-only with odds ratios of 3·08 (95% CI 1·99, 4·75) and 1·99 (95% CI 1·47, 2·69) compared to existing practice, respectively. With considerable uncertainty around the pooled effect, we found no evidence that monetary incentives were effective at increasing donations compared to existing practice. Non-monetary incentives were only effective in the donor subgroup.   • We present a 26-year-old woman who came to the emergency department with chest pain of 1 hour duration that started while she was exercising on the treadmill. At presentation, ECG showed sinus bradycardia. Initial troponin level was 0.05 ng/mL and her chest pain resolved within 3 hours of onset. Troponins were trended serially, which continued to rise and peaked at 28.77 ng/mL and so heparin drip was started. On the second day of admission, a coronary angiogram was performed along with intravascular ultrasound, which revealed type 3 spontaneous coronary artery dissection. No obstructive atherosclerotic disease was noted in any of the coronary vessels. No coronary intervention was performed. Patient was started on aspirin and clopidogrel. Patient was discharged home in stable condition and was followed outpatient, where she remained in excellent health condition at her first clinic visit. © BMJ Publishing Group Limited 2020. We present the case of a 48-year-old male patient with a history of grade I meningioma who was referred 3 years after the initial diagnosis to our centre due to pelvic pain. Computed tomography (CT) images showed new pelvic bone lesions whose histopathological report was compatible with a grade I meningioma. Neither hormonal therapy concomitant with octreotide nor hydroxiurea treatments were effective. Very little is known about this entity's prevalence and treatment when disseminated disease occurs. Bone marrow biopsy revealed raised plasma cell count, and endomyocardial biopsy showed amyloid deposits in the myocardium. Free lambda light chain levels were elevated, even though serum and urine electrophoresis did not show any monoclonal band. In this 'text book case of cardiac amyloidosis', apart from cardiovascular system no other organ system was affected, which is uncommon in primary light chain amyloidosis. A 56-year-old woman with a background of type 2 diabetes mellitus and breast carcinoma was referred to the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery 2-week wait clinic, regarding a tender sublingual mass and firm erythematous swelling in the right submandibular and submental region. This was slowly progressive and had not responded to oral co-amoxiclav. An orthopantomogram showed a well-defined radiolucency and smaller radiolucent lesions throughout the edentulous right body of the mandible. A contrast-enhanced CT confirmed a right submandibular abscess communicating with cavitating lesions. The differentials included osteomyelitis, bony metastases, multiple myeloma or other cystic lesions. The patient underwent incision and drainage of the abscess, alongside biopsies, and intravenous co-amoxiclav was given. Microbiology cultures confirmed the presence of Actinomyces israelii and a diagnosis of cervicofacial actinomycosis with mandibular osteomyelitis. Previous investigations into these recurrent symptoms focused on a re-evaluation of his known ischaemic heart disease, which required multiple percutaneous interventions with stenting several years ago. In the year leading up to his referral, the patient required two transfusions during separate hospitalisations. Previously, his chronic anaemia was attributed to chronic inflammation because of unrevealing micronutrient and endoscopic evaluations. The patient underwent a bone marrow biopsy, which demonstrated normal karyotype myelodysplastic syndrome with ringed sideroblasts. This patient was found to have favourable cytogenetics and low-risk disease. His anaemia and associated symptoms improved with the administration of an erythroid-stimulating agent. METHODS Retrospective analysis of patients diagnosed with penile cancer, submitted to surgery in a Portuguese Oncological Institution in the last 20 years (n = 35). Histological review of surgical pieces and immunohistochemical identification of p16INK4a. Relation between p16INK4a and the following factors were studied age, histological subtype, tumour dimensions, grade, TNM stage, perineural invasion, perivascular invasion, disease free survival (DFS) and cancer specific survival (CSS). RESULTS p16INK4a was positive in 8 patients (22.9%). Identification of p16INK4a did not correlate with none of the histopathological factors. In this work we identified a better DFS and CSS in patients positive for p16INK4a (DFS at 36 months was 100.0% vs. 66.7%; CSS at 36 months was 100.0% vs. 70.4%), although without statistical significance (p > 0.05). In multivariate analysis of histopathological factors studied, only N staging correlated with DFS and CSS (p = 0.017 and p = 0.014, respectively). DISCUSSION the percentage of cases positive for p16INK4a is smaller than the one found in literature, which can suggest a less relevant part of HPV infection in the oncogenesis of penile cancer in the studied population. Identification of p16INK4a did not relate with other clinicopathological factors. Tendency for a more favourable prognosis in patients with p16INK4a agrees with results found in literature. MATERIALS AND METHODS A retrospective analysis was made of the data of 1334 patients who underwent transrectal ultra- sound (TRUS)-guided prostate biopsy between January 2016 and October 2018. A total of 438 patients with available data for age, tPSA and fPSA levels and PV calculated by TRUS were enrolled in the study. Patients with chronic prostatitis pathology in addition to BPH were also noted and evaluated as a separate group. RESULTS There were significant correlations between PV and age, tPSA, fPSA, fPSA/tPSA ratio (r = 0.210, r = 0.338, r = 0.548, r = 0.363 respectively). METHODS 1) Rat MI models were established. Then 3 rats in experimental (MI) group and 3 rats in sham operation (Sham) group were selected, RNAs were extracted from heart tissues, and differentially expressed miRNAs in the two groups were screened using transcriptome sequencing techniques. 2) TargetScan was applied to predict miR-30b-5p target genes, which then were collected and subjected to enrichment analysis conducted using Metascape. 3) Myocardial cells were extracted from MI rats and transfected with miR-30b-5p inhibitor. Then the changes in cell proliferation and apoptosis were detected by 3-(4,5)-dimethylthiahiazo (-z-y1)-3,5-diphenytetrazoliumromide (MTT) assay and flow cytometry, respectively. 4) The expressions of β-actin, β-catenin, Caspase-3 and cleaved Caspase-3 were detected in myocardial cells transfected with miR-30b-5p viaWestern blotting (WB). RESULTS 1) A total of 85 differentially expressed miRNAs were detected in the heart of MI rats, and miR-30b-5p expression was down-regulated (P less then 0.01). 2) In addition, target genes regulated by miR-30b-5p participated in the vascular development, miRNA metabolic process and Wnt signaling pathway. 3) In comparison with miR-negative control (NC) transfection, miR-30b-5p inhibitor transfection promoted the proliferation of myocardial cells but inhibited their apoptosis (P less then 0.05). 4) Compared with those in miR-NC transfection group, the expressions of β-catenin and cleaved Caspase-3 proteins were down-regulated in miR-30b-5p inhibitor transfection group (P less then 0.01). CONCLUSIONS MiR-30b-5p is involved in the proliferation and apoptosis of myocardial cells via regulating the Wnt/β-catenin signaling pathway, and it may become a potential target for the diagnosis of MI in clinic.

Identification of p16INK4a did not relate with other clinicopathological factors. Tendency for a more favourable prognosis in patients with p16INK4a agrees with results found in literature. Patients with chronic prostatitis pathology in addition to BPH were also noted and evaluated as a separate group. Then 3 rats in experimental (MI) group and 3 rats in sham operation (Sham) group were selected, RNAs were extracted from heart tissues, and differentially expressed miRNAs in the two groups were screened using transcriptome sequencing techniques. 2) TargetScan was applied to predict miR-30b-5p target genes, which then were collected and subjected to enrichment analysis conducted using Metascape. 3) Myocardial cells were extracted from MI rats and transfected with miR-30b-5p inhibitor. Then the changes in cell proliferation and apoptosis were detected by 3-(4,5)-dimethylthiahiazo (-z-y1)-3,5-diphenytetrazoliumromide (MTT) assay and flow cytometry, respectively. 4) The expressions of β-actin, β-catenin, Caspase-3 and cleaved Caspase-3 were detected in myocardial cells transfected with miR-30b-5p viaWestern blotting (WB). CONCLUSIONS MiR-30b-5p is involved in the proliferation and apoptosis of myocardial cells via regulating the Wnt/β-catenin signaling pathway, and it may become a potential target for the diagnosis of MI in clinic.

  • The shell structure and release properties of layer-by-layer assembled particles could be tailored by controlling the interactions between starches.Although research on phytochemicals has been a hot topic due to positive effects on human health, modification of starch with phytochemicals has been limited. In the present work, cassava starch-ferulic acid (CS-FA) complexes were acquired using different times of mechanical activation via stirring ball milling, and their characterization and physicochemical properties were investigated. Scanning electron microscopy showed the broken structure of native cassava starch, but the smooth structure of CS-FA complexes. The X-ray diffraction indicated that the C-type crystalline structure of native cassava starch completely disappeared with the increase time of mechanical activation. The complexation was characterized by Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy and Solid carbon nuclear magnetic resonance (13C NMR) studies. The TGA analysis showed that the thermal stability was decreased by mechanical activation, but it could be improved with the existence of ferulic acid. The solubility of CS-FA complexes increased with increasing of the time by mechanical activation. Therefore, mechanical activation is considered a suitable method for preparing CS-FA complexes. A series of hydrogel has been developed by taking different concentration of cuminaldehyde (6-10 mmol). Chemical structure of the synthesized hydrogel was further confirmed by FTIR. The surface morphology of the synthesized hydrogel was confirmed from the scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Prepared hydrogel was swelled very fast similar to the super-porous hydrogel along with rapid self-healing property which is confirmed by rheology statistics. Mechanical strength of the hydrogel was investigated from the rheology analysis and demonstrates good mechanical properties i.e. storage modulus (G') found to 107 pa. Further, the sustained release of hydrophilic drug i.e. levofloxacin from the hydrogel matrix at different pH range 6-7 has been carried out. Hydrogel with maximum cuminaldehyde amount releases max drug i.e. 96% while hydrogel with 6 mmol shows minimum drug release i.e.54%. Hydrogel shows controlled release of levofloxacin up to 90 h. Materials and Methods Data from six PRES patients with atypical regions were collected from our hospital. Data from another 550 cases were obtained by searching the PubMed, EMBASE and Web of Science databases with the keywords "posterior reversible encephalopathy syndrome" "PRES" "reversible posterior leukoencephalopathy" "RPLS" "hypertensive encephalopathy" "hyperperfusion encephalopathy" or "reversible posterior cerebral edema encephalopathy." The clinical and MRI features of these 556 cases were analyzed together. Results A total of 305 patients were female, and 248 were male, 6, 22.3%) lobes. The major treatments were antihypertensives (358/515, 69.5%), antiepileptics/sedation (126/515, 24.5%), discontinuation/switching agents (67/515, 13.0%), and steroids (54/515, 10.5%). The median time of the clinical state improved and abnormal neuroimaging resolved is 2-3 weeks after appropriate treatment. Conclusion The common symptoms of PRES with atypical regions include headaches, altered mental status, seizures, visual disturbances, nausea or vomiting, and focal neurological deficits. The frequent predisposing factors include hypertension, renal diseases, immunosuppressant drugs and chemotherapy/chemoradiotherapy. Patients were age- and sex-matched with healthy controls. The Mann-Whitney U test was used to compare cardiac strain between the two groups. The t-test was used to compare the extracellular volume obtained in DM1 patients with that in healthy subject. Spearman's ρ was used for studying the associations among imaging parameters. Results Global cardiac strain (median -19.1%; IQR -20.5%, -16.5%) in DM1 patients was lower (p = 0.011) than that in controls (median-21.7%; IQR-22.7%,-21.3%). Global extracellular volume in DM1 patients (median 32.3%; IQR 29.3%,36.8%) was significantly (p = 0.008) higher than that reported in literature in healthy subjects (median 25.6%; IQR 19.9%,31.9%). Global cardiac strain showed a strong, positive correlation with septal strain (ρ = 0.767, p = 0.016) and with both global (ρ = 0.733 p = 0.025) and septal extracellular volume (ρ = 0.767, p = 0.016). Discussion The increase in cardiac extracellular volume and decrease in strain are signs of early cardiac pathology in DM1. Physicians dealing with DM1 may take into consideration cardiac magnetic resonance as a screening tool to identify early cardiac involvement in this condition. Twenty-five cases of pseudo-BPPV with frequent changing positional vertigo were retrospected and the following key features help to identify the disease recurrent positional and atypical positional vertigo, migrainous accompanying symptoms or migraine history, mild or indistinctive headaches, with or without impaired vestibular function, ineffective for simply reposition. And we found that vertigo in pseudo-BPPV can be preferable controlled by valproic acid combined with canalith repositioning procedure. Methods Sixteen PD patients with FOG performed a series of 180° turns under an experimental condition with AR visual cues displayed through a HoloLens and two control conditions (one consisting of auditory cues and one without any cues). FOG episodes were annotated by two independent raters from video recordings. Motion data were measured with 17 inertial measurement units for calculating axial kinematics, scaling, and timing of turning. Results AR visual cues did not reduce the percent time frozen (p = 0.73) or the number (p = 0.73) and duration (p = 0.78) of FOG episodes compared to the control condition without cues. The t-test was used to compare the extracellular volume obtained in DM1 patients with that in healthy subject. Spearman's ρ was used for studying the associations among imaging parameters. Results Global cardiac strain (median -19.1%; IQR -20.5%, -16.5%) in DM1 patients was lower (p = 0.011) than that in controls (median-21.7%; IQR-22.7%,-21.3%). Global extracellular volume in DM1 patients (median 32.3%; IQR 29.3%,36.8%) was significantly (p = 0.008) higher than that reported in literature in healthy subjects (median 25.6%; IQR 19.9%,31.9%). Global cardiac strain showed a strong, positive correlation with septal strain (ρ = 0.767, p = 0.016) and with both global (ρ = 0.733 p = 0.025) and septal extracellular volume (ρ = 0.767, p = 0.016). Discussion The increase in cardiac extracellular volume and decrease in strain are signs of early cardiac pathology in DM1. Physicians dealing with DM1 may take into consideration cardiac magnetic resonance as a screening tool to identify early cardiac involvement in this condition. FOG episodes were annotated by two independent raters from video recordings. Motion data were measured with 17 inertial measurement units for calculating axial kinematics, scaling, and timing of turning. Rats were trained nine weeks prior to MI, followed by ADSCs transplantation. The MI led to left ventricle (LV) dilation and dysfunction, myocardial hypertrophy and fibrosis, and increased proinflammatory profile compared to Sham rats. Conversely, ADSCs transplanted rats exhibited, better morphological and functional LV parameters; inhibition of myocardial hypertrophy and fibrosis; and attenuation of proinflammatory cytokines (interleukins 1β and 10, tumor necrosis factor α, and transforming growth factor β) in the myocardium compared to sMI rats. Interestingly, ET enhanced the effect of ADSCs on interleukin 10 expression. There was a correlation between cytokine expression and myocardial ADSCs retention. The.   • Modern machine learning techniques (such as deep learning) offer immense opportunities in the field of human biological aging research. Aging is a complex process, experienced by all living organisms. While traditional machine learning and data mining approaches are still popular in aging research, they typically need feature engineering or feature extraction for robust performance. Explicit feature engineering represents a major challenge, as it requires significant domain knowledge. The latest advances in deep learning provide a paradigm shift in eliciting meaningful knowledge from complex data without performing explicit feature engineering. In this article, we review the recent literature on applying deep learning in biological age estimation. We consider the current data modalities that have been used to study aging and the deep learning architectures that have been applied. We identify four broad classes of measures to quantify the performance of algorithms for biological age estimation and based on these evaluate the current approaches. The paper concludes with a brief discussion on possible future directions in biological aging research using deep learning. This study has significant potentials for improving our understanding of the health status of individuals, for instance, based on their physical activities, blood samples and body shapes. Control programs involving 'rear and release' of modified male Ae. aegypti are underway and require effective trapping methods for surveillance of both the released insects and the impacted wild mosquito population. The BG-Sentinel trap (BGS) is widely used in Ae. aegypti surveillance but its level of efficiency, that is, what proportion of the mosquitoes encountering the trap are captured, is unknown. This is especially true for male mosquitoes, the behavior of which is incompletely understood. We tested the efficiency of two versions of the BGS for capturing male Ae. aegypti under semifield conditions with and without CO2 and a human skin odor mimic lure and with these baits combined. A navy-blue BGS trap emitting CO2 and a human skin odor mimic captured 18% of the released male Ae. aegypti, with a capture efficiency of 9 % (of the total encounters with the trap). Male Ae. aegypti had multiple encounters with the BGS that did not result in capture; they crossed over the trap entrance without being captured or landed on the sides of the trap. Swarming behavior around the BGS was also recorded, even when only a visual cue was present. Understanding male Ae. aegypti behaviors during an encounter with the BGS can inform improvement of trap design and therefore capture efficiency for surveillance in control programs. This study evaluated the ability and mechanism by which the GSP improves ethanol-induced hippocampal neuronal injury. METHODS Primary cultures of hippocampal neurons were exposed to ethanol (11, 33 and 66 mM, 1, 4, 8, 12 and 24 h) and the neuroprotective effects of GSP were assessed by evaluating the activity of superoxide dismutase (***), the levels of malondialdehyde (MDA) and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) and cell morphology. RESULTS Our results indicated that GSP prevented ethanol-induced neuronal injury by reducing the levels of MDA and LDH, while increasing the activity of ***. In addition, GSP increased the number of primary dendrites and total dendritic length per cell. The spike protein is comprised of two protein subunits (S1 and S2), which together possess 22 potential N-glycosylation sites. Herein, we report the glycosylation mapping on spike protein subunits S1 and S2 expressed on human cells through high resolution mass spectrometry. We have characterized the quantitative N-glycosylation profile on spike protein and interestingly, observed unexpected O-glycosylation modifications on the receptor binding domain (RBD) of spike protein subunit S1. Even though O-glycosylation has been predicted on the spike protein of SARS-CoV-2, this is the first report of experimental data for both the site of O-glycosylation and identity of the O-glycans attached on the subunit S1.

Identification of anatomic landmarks on lateral cephalograms is tedious, and errors may occur depending on the doctor's experience. Several attempts have been made to reduce this time-consuming process by automating the process through machine learning; however, they only dealt with a small amount of data from one institute. This study aims to develop a fully automated cephalometric analysis method using deep learning and a corresponding web-based application that can be used without high-specification hardware. Methods We built our own dataset comprising 2,075 lateral cephalograms and ground truth positions of 23 landmarks from two institutes and trained a two-stage automated algorithm with a stacked hourglass deep learning model specialized for detecting landmarks in images. Additionally, a web-based application with the proposed algorithm for fully automated cephalometric analysis was developed for better accessibility regardless of the user's computer hardware, which is essential for a deep learning-based method. Results The algorithm was evaluated with datasets from various devices and institutes, including a widely used open dataset and achieved 1.37 ± 1.79 mm of point-to-point errors with ground truth positions for 23 cephalometric landmarks. Based on the predicted positions, anatomical types of the subjects were automatically classified and compared with the ground truth, and the automated algorithm achieved a successful classification rate of 88.43%. Conclusions We expect that this fully automated cephalometric analysis algorithm and the web-based application can be widely used in various medical environments to save time and effort for manual marking and diagnosis.Background Prior studies have found higher proportions of cesarean deliveries and longer postpartum hospital stays among women with disabilities compared to women without disabilities. However, no research has assessed how length of stay may differ for women with different types of disability while also considering mode of delivery. Objective To examine the association of disability status and disability type with length of stay, taking into account disability-related differences in mode of delivery. Methods We conducted a retrospective cohort study using linked maternal and infant hospital discharge and vital records data for all births in California between 2000 and 2012 (n = 6,745,201). We used multivariable regression analyses to assess association of disability status and type with prolonged length of stay (>2 days for vaginal delivery or >4 days for cesarean) while controlling for covariates. Results Women with disabilities had significantly elevated adjusted odds of prolonged length of stay compared to women without disabilities (aOR = 1.40, 95% CI = 1.32-1.49). Adjusted odds were highest for women with vision disabilities (aOR = 1.67, 95% CI = 1.46-1.90), followed by women with IDD (aOR = 1.53, 95% CI = 1.30-1.80), and women with physical disabilities (aOR = 1.41, 95% CI = 1.32-1.50). Women with hearing disability had the lowest adjusted odds of prolonged length of stay (aOR = 1.17, 95% CI = 1.03-1.33). Conclusions Prolonged length of stay did not appear to be due solely to the higher proportion of cesarean deliveries in this population. Further research is needed to better understand the reasons for prolonged length of stay among women with disabilities and develop strategies to assist women with disabilities in preparing for and recovering from childbirth.Two healthy elderly donated their peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs).
