This approach provided a rapid and reliable means of de novo generation of Mll-Af9 genetic rearrangements in murine haematopoietic stem and progenitor cells (HSPCs), using CRISPR/Cas9 technology to produce a cellular model of MA9 leukaemias which faithfully reproduces many features of the human disease in vitro.The balance between cell survival and cell death represents an essential part of human tissue homeostasis, while altered apoptosis contributes to several pathologies and can affect the treatment efficacy. Impaired apoptosis is one of the main cancer hallmarks and some types of lymphomas harbor mutations that directly affect key regulators of cell death (such as BCL-2 family members). The development of novel techniques in the field of immunology and new animal models has greatly accelerated our understanding of oncogenic mechanisms in ****associated lymphomas. Mouse models are a powerful tool to reveal multiple genes implicated in the genesis of lymphoma and are extensively used to clarify the molecular mechanism of lymphoma, validating the gene function. Key features of ****induced apoptosis will be discussed here along with more recent studies on ****direct and indirect interactors, including their cooperative action in lymphomagenesis. We review our current knowledge about the role of ****induced apoptosis in B-cell malignancies, discussing the transcriptional regulation network of ****and regulatory feedback action of miRs during ****driven lymphomagenesis. More importantly, the finding of new modulators of apoptosis now enabling researchers to translate the discoveries that have been made in the laboratory into clinical practice to positively impact human health.Background Diverse groups of carrot cultivars have been developed to meet consumer demands and industry needs. Methods Here, we used 307 carrot plants from 103 open-pollinated cultivars for a genome wide association study to identify genomic regions associated with the storage root morphology. Results A 180 kb-long region on carrot chromosome 1 explained 10% of the total observed phenotypic variance in the shoulder diameter. Within that region, DcDCAF1 and DcBTAF1 genes were proposed as candidates controlling secondary growth of the carrot storage root. Their expression profiles differed between the cultivated and the wild carrots, likely indicating that their elevated expression was required for the development of edible roots. They also showed higher expression at the secondary root growth stage in cultivars producing thick roots, as compared to those developing thin roots. Conclusions We provided evidence for a likely involvement of DcDCAF1 and/or DcBTAF1 in the development of the carrot storage root and developed a genotyping assay facilitating the identification of variants in the region on carrot chromosome 1 associated with secondary growth of the carrot root.The ability of exosomes to transport different molecular cargoes and their ability to influence various physiological factors is already well known. In this review, we will try to summarize actual knowledge about this topic and to answer the question of how important exosomes are for a healthy pregnancy.Multifunctional hybrid materials with applications in gas sensing or dye removal from wastewaters were obtained by incorporation into silica matrices of either Pt(II)-5,10,15,20-tetra-(4-allyloxy-phenyl)-porphyrin (PtTAOPP) or platinum nanoparticles (PtNPs) alone or accompanied by 5,10,15,20-tetra-(4-allyloxy-phenyl)-porphyrin (TAOPP). The tetraethylorthosilicate (TEOS)-based silica matrices were obtained by using the sol-gel method performed in two step acid-base catalysis. Optical, structural and morphological properties of the hybrid materials were determined and compared by UV-vis, fluorescence and FT-IR spectroscopy techniques, by atomic force microscopy (AFM) and high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) and by Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) analysis. EDC/sulfo-NHS coupling led to limited changes in storage modulus (from 0.9 to 2 kPa), but it significantly increased both the strain (from 6% to 60%) and failure stress (from 19 to 35 Pa) of peptide hydrogel without impairing the spontaneous formation of β-sheet-containing nano-filaments. Furthermore, EDC/sulfo-NHS cross-linking bestowed self-healing and thixotropic properties to the peptide hydrogel. Lastly, we demonstrated that this strategy can be used to incorporate bioactive functional motifs after self-assembly on pre-formed nanostructures by functionalizing an Ac-LDLKLDLKLDLK-CONH2 (LDLK12) self-assembling peptide with the phage display-derived KLPGWSG peptide involved in the modulation of neural stem cell proliferation and differentiation. The incorporation of a functional motif did not alter the peptide's secondary structure and its mechanical properties. The work reported here offers new tools to both fine tune the mechanical properties of and tailor the biomimetic properties of self-assembling peptide hydrogels while retaining their nanostructures, which is useful for tissue engineering and regenerative medicine applications.

Results. Seven (9.3%) of the 75 nasopharyngeal swabs obtained from patients with acute respiratory tract infection were positive for HBoV by PCR, while 5 (6.7 %) of the 75 serum samples were positive for HBoV IgM antibodies using ELISA. The correlation between PCR and ELISA results showed a highly significant association between PCR and ELISA techniques (X2=52.041, P less then 0.01) and a highly significant agreement between the two methods (Kappa=81.9 %, P less then 0.01). Phylogenetic analysis showed that all positive samples were related to the HBoV-1 genotype.Conclusion.Human bocavirus was detected at 9.3 % prevalence in nasopharyngeal swabs obtained from children with acute respiratory tract infection. The HBoV-1 genotype was the only genotype detected, suggesting that a single genetic lineage of HBoV is circulating in Egypt. In the existing commercial PCV2 enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) kits both natural infection with PCV2 and vaccine immunization produce results that are positive for PCV2 Cap antibodies and therefore they cannot diagnose PCV2 infection in immunized pig farms.Aim. To establish a PCV2 non-structural protein antibody detection method that distinguishes between antibodies resulting from natural prior exposure (infection) and those induced by subunit vaccine immunization.Methodology. Based on the non-structural Rep' protein, we established an indirect ELISA (iELISA) using sera from guinea pigs and piglets.Results. The results for iELISA for guinea pig serum showed that animals vaccinated with a whole-virus inactivated PCV2 vaccine had 100 % (10/10) Cap antibody positivity and 100 % (10/10) Rep' antibody positivity. Guinea pigs vaccinated with a recombinant subunit PCV2 vaccine had 100 % (10/10) Cap antibody positivity, while no (0/10) guinea pigs were Rep' antibody-positive. The combined detection results for the Rep' iELISA and a PCV2 Antibody Test kit (Commercial) showed that pigs vaccinated with a whole-virus inactivated PCV2 vaccine or PCV2 SD/2017 had 100 % (5/5) Cap antibody positivity and 100 % (5/5) Rep' antibody positivity. Pigs vaccinated with a recombinant subunit PCV2 vaccine had 100 % (5/5) Cap antibody positivity, while no (0/10) pigs were Rep' antibody-positive.Conclusion. The genomic DNA G+C content of strain SM1977T, determined from the obtained whole genomic sequence, was 42.3 mol%. On the basis of the polyphasic results obtained in this study, strain SM1977T is considered to represent a novel species within the genus Vibrio, for which the name Vibrio algicola sp. nov. is proposed. We consider the global exponential synchronization of a category of quaternion-valued coupled neural networks (QVCNNs) with impulses in this article. It makes up for the gap of coupled neural networks with impulses in quaternion. On account of the product of two quaternions cannot be exchanged under normal circumstances, for convenience, we isolate the QVCNN into four real-valued coupled neural networks (RVCNNs) which are converted into an augmented system by defining a new augmented vector. By leveraging a distinctive Lyapunov-Krasovskii function and some matrix inequalities, several sufficient conditions for the global exponential synchronization of the system are attained. Ultimately, two examples are used to prove the validity of the theories in this paper.Neural networks implemented with traditional hardware face inherent limitation of memory latency. This motivates memristor-based neuromorphic computing in which the memory units (i.e., memristors) have computing capabilities. However, training a memristor-based neural network is difficult since memristors work differently from CMOS hardware. This paper proposes a new training approach that enables prevailing neural network training techniques to be applied for memristor-based neuromorphic networks. Particularly, we introduce momentum and adaptive learning rate to the circuit training, both of which are proven methods that significantly accelerate the convergence of neural network parameters. Furthermore, we show that this circuit can be used for neural networks with arbitrary numbers of layers, neurons, and parameters. Simulation results on four classification tasks demonstrate that the proposed circuit achieves both high accuracy and fast speed. Compared with the SGD-based training circuit, on the WBC data set, the training speed of our circuit is increased by 37.2% while the accuracy is only reduced by 0.77%. On the MNIST data set, the new circuit even leads to improved accuracy.Multi-view feature extraction methods mainly focus on exploiting the consistency and complementary information between multi-view samples, and most of the current methods apply the F-norm or L2-norm as the metric, which are sensitive to the outliers or noises. In this paper, based on L2,1-norm, we propose a unified robust feature extraction framework, which includes four special multi-view feature extraction methods, and extends the state-of-art methods to a more generalized form. The proposed methods are less sensitive to outliers or noises. An efficient iterative algorithm is designed to solve L2,1-norm based methods. Comprehensive analyses, such as convergence analysis, rotational invariance analysis and relationship between our methods and previous F-norm based methods illustrate the effectiveness of our proposed methods. Experiments on two artificial datasets and six real datasets demonstrate that the proposed L2,1-norm based methods have better performance than the related methods.As a major step forward in machine learning, generative adversarial networks (GANs) employ the Wasserstein distance as a metric between the generative distribution and target data distribution, and thus can be viewed as optimal transport (OT) problems to reflect the underlying geometry of the probability distribution. However, the unequal dimensions between the source random distribution and the target data, result in often instability in the training processes, and lack of diversity in the generative images. To resolve the challenges, we propose here a multiple-projection approach, to project the source and target probability measures into multiple different low-dimensional subspaces. Moreover, we show that the original problem can be transformed into a variant multi-marginal OT problem, and we provide the explicit properties of the solutions. In addition, we employ parameterized approximation for the objective, and study the corresponding differentiability and convergence properties, ensuring that the problem can indeed be computed.We tested whether the acquisition of grapheme-color synesthesia during childhood is related to difficulties in written language learning by measuring whether it is more frequent in 79 children receiving speech and language therapy for such difficulties than in the general population of children (1.3%). By using criteria as similar as possible to those used in the reference study (Simner et al., 2009), we did not identify any synesthete (Bayesian 95% credible interval [0, 4.5]% for a flat prior). The odds of the null model (no difference between 0/79 and 1.3%) over alternative models is 28 (Bayes Factor). A higher prevalence of grapheme-color synesthetes among children with learning difficulties is therefore very unlikely, questioning the hypothesis of a link between synesthesia and difficulties in language acquisition. If the generation-interval distribution of asymptomatic transmission differs from that of symptomatic transmission, then estimates of the basic reproduction number which do not explicitly account for asymptomatic cases may be systematically biased. Specifically, if asymptomatic cases have a shorter generation interval than symptomatic cases, R0 will be over-estimated, and if they have a longer generation interval, R0 will be under-estimated. The results from this work highlight the importance of considering strain-rate dependences (model II) to provide reliable predictions under dynamic loading scenarios. In this regard, rate-independent approaches (model I) are rather limited to quasi-static loading.The early and late development of new anticancer drugs, small molecules or peptides can be slowed down by some issues such as poor selectivity for the target or poor ADME properties. Computer-aided drug design (CADD) and target drug delivery (TDD) techniques, although apparently far from each other, are two research fields that can give a significant contribution to overcome these problems. Their combination may provide mechanistic understanding resulting in a synergy that makes possible the rational design of novel anticancer based therapies. Herein, we aim to discuss selected applications, some also from our research experience, in the fields of anticancer small organic drugs and peptides.The leaves of Pyrola rotundifolia L. were extracted in the mixed solvent of methanol/acetone/water (221, v/v/v) and investigated for their phytochemical analysis and biological activity. Total phenolic and flavonoid contents were determined spectrophotometrically. A high content of phenols (208.35 mg GAE/g of dry extract), flavonoids (38.90 mg QE/g of dry extract) and gallotannins (722.91 GAE/g of dry extract) was obtained. Ultra-high performance liquid chromatography diode array detector tandem mass spectrometry (UHPLC-DAD-MS) allowed for the detection of 23 major peaks at 254 nm. The extract was analyzed for its antioxidant capacity using 2,2-diphenyl-1-picryl-hydrazyl (DPPH•) and 2,2'-azinobis[3-ethylbenzthiazoline]-6-sulfonic acid (ABTS•+) radical scavenging, metal chelating power and β-carotene-linoleic acid bleaching assays. The examined extract showed moderate radical scavenging and chelating activity, and good inhibiting ability of linoleic acid oxidation (EC50 = 0.05 mg/mL) in comparison to standards. The cytotoxic effect in increasing concentration on five types of leukemic cell lines was also investigated using trypan blue vital staining. It was found that the analyzed extract induced the apoptosis of all the tested cell lines. Our findings suggest that the leaves of P. rotundifolia are a source of valuable compounds providing protection against oxidative damage, hence their use in traditional medicine is justified.Mediator of DNA damage checkpoint protein 1 (****) plays a vital role in DNA damage response (DDR) by coordinating the repair of double strand breaks (DSBs). Here, we identified a novel interaction between **** and karyopherin α-2 (KPNA2), a nucleocytoplasmic transport adaptor, and showed that KPNA2 is necessary for **** nuclear import. Thereafter, we identified a functional nuclear localization signal (NLS) between amino acid residues 1989-1994 of the two Breast Cancer 1 (BRCA1) carboxyl-terminal (tBRCT) domain of **** and demonstrated disruption of this NLS impaired interaction between **** and KPNA2 and reduced nuclear localization of ****. In KPNA2-depleted cells, the recruitment of ****, along with the downstream signaling p roteins Ring Finger Protein 8 (RNF8), 53BP1-binding protein 1 (53BP1), BRCA1, and Ring Finger Protein 168 (RNF168), to DNA damage sites was abolished. Additionally, KPNA2-depleted cells had a decreased rate of homologous recombination (HR) repair. Our data suggest that KPNA2-mediated **** nuclear import is important for DDR signaling and DSB repair.During the "slit die extrusion-hot stretching" process, highly oriented polyamide 6 (PA6) dispersed phase was produced and retained in the polypropylene (PP) matrix directly. By adjusting the stretching forces, the PA6 spherical phase evolved into the ellipsoid, rod-like microfibril with a decreasing average diameter; then, the PA6 microfibrils broke. Moreover, the effects of the PA6 phases formed in the process of the microfibrillation on PP's crystallization behaviors were studied systematically. As the stretching forces increased, the crystallization ability and orientation degree of PP crystals improved significantly. Differential scanning calorimetry and polarizing optical microscopy confirmed the formation of PP spherulite, fan-shaped lamellae and a transcrystalline layer under the induction of the PA6 phases with different morphology. In the PP/PA6 microfibrilar composites (****), PP crystals showed smaller average size, more crystals and stronger interface adhesion due to more excellent heterogeneous nucleation ability of the PA6 microfibrils, which made contributions to the improvement of the melt elasticity responses and oxygen barrier properties of the PP/PA6 polymer blends.We investigated the prognostic influence of androgen receptor (AR) on breast cancer. New-generation dual-mode single-probe lithotripsy devices have shown favourable results compared with use of ballistic or ultrasonic lithotripters only. However, ballistic and ultrasonic lithotripters are also highly effective and safe and have been the backbone of PCNL for many years. Compared with standard PCNL, it seems that mini PCNL is associated with fewer bleeding complications and shorter hospital admissions, but also with longer operating room (OR) time and higher intrarenal pressure. Robotic-assisted simple prostatectomy (RASP) is an established surgical procedure for the management of obstructive symptoms caused by large adenomas. Traditionally, this is performed according to the trans-vescical (Freyer) or trans-capsular (Millin) technique. We recently described a novel urethra-sparing (Madigan) robotic technique which showed promising preliminary results. In this study, we compared the above techniques for perioperative and 1-year patient-reported outcomes.
We retrospectively collected data from patients who underwent RASP across the three techniques, performed by two experienced surgeons in our center. We assessed patient self-reported pre-operative and post-operative functional outcomes with validated questionnaires IPSS, IIEF short form, ICIQ short form, MSHQ Short Form. Continuous and categorical variables were compared between groups using the Mood's median test and the Chi-square tests, respectively.

Atlas content developments in these groups are heading in 23 various directions. Application-wise, we overview atlases in neuroeducation, research, and clinics, including stereotactic and functional neurosurgery, neuroradiology, neurology, and stroke. Functionality-wise, tools and functionalities are addressed for atlas creation, navigation, individualization, enabling operations, and application-specific. Availability is discussed in media and platforms, ranging from mobile solutions to leading-edge supercomputers, with three accessibility levels. The major application-wise shift has been from research to clinical practice, particularly in stereotactic and functional neurosurgery, although clinical applications are still lagging behind the atlas content progress. Atlas functionality also has been relatively neglected until recently, as the management of brain data explosion requires powerful tools. Well-designed trials comparing side-by-side effects of macronutrients on postprandial endothelial function are missing. Therefore, we investigated under well-controlled and isocaloric condition effects of fat, carbohydrates, and protein on postprandial endothelial function as assessed by brachial artery flow-mediated vasodilation (FMD), an important non-invasive technique to assess endothelial function.
Eighteen apparently healthy overweight and slightly obese men (BMI 26.0-35.0kg/m
) completed this randomized, double-blinded, cross-over trial. The study consisted of three test days each separated by a wash-out period of at least 1week. After an overnight fast, men received an isocaloric meal providing 3987kJ (953kcal) that was either high in dietary fat (En% fat [F]/carbohydrates [C]/protein [P] 52.3, 39.2, 8.0), carbohydrates (En% F/C/P 9.6, 81.5, 8.6), or protein (En% F/C/P 10.6, 51.5, 36.9). Fasting and 2-h postprandial FMD responses were measured.
A postprandial decrease of 1.2% point in FMD was observed after the high-protein meal (P = 0.015). However, postprandial changes did not differ between meals (P = 0.45). An increase in baseline brachial artery diameters was observed after the high-protein meal (P < 0.001) and changes differed between meals (P = 0.020). A meal*time interaction was found for plasma glucose concentrations, with the most pronounced increases after the high-carbohydrate meal at T15, T30, T60, and T90 (P < 0.05). A significant time and meal (P < 0.001), but no time*meal effect (P = 0.06) was found for serum insulin concentrations. Increases in serum triacylglycerol concentrations did not differ between meals (P = 0.014).

To evaluate the balance between existing evidence and expert opinions on the safety and efficacy of new technological improvements in lithotripsy techniques for percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL). A scoping review approach was applied to search literature in Pubmed, Embase, and Web of Science. Consensus by key opinion leaders was reached at a 2-day meeting entitled "Consultation on Kidney Stones Aspects of Intracorporeal Lithotripsy" held in Copenhagen, Denmark, in September 2019. New-generation dual-mode single-probe lithotripsy devices have shown favourable results compared with use of ballistic or ultrasonic lithotripters only. The reactions of [PhI(pyridine)2]2+ with Ph3Sb and Ph3Bi afford dicationic Pn(v) complexes ligated by pyridine in one step. These were previously reported by Burford in multi-step syntheses. Reactions with PhI(OAc)2, which were already known for Sb and Bi giving Pn(v) diacetates, were confirmed to give the same type of compound for As. Specifically, ultrafiltration (UF) membranes were first modified using polydopamine (PDA) followed by grafting of amine-terminated polysiloxane (PSi-NH2). For example, with 2 g L-1 PSi-NH2 coating solution, the obtained coating layer contains 53% by mass fraction PSi-NH2 and exhibits a total surface energy of 21 mN m-1, decreasing the adsorption of bovine serum albumin by 44% compared to the unmodified membrane. When challenged with 1 g L-1 sodium alginate in a constant-flux crossflow system, the PSi-NH2-grafted membrane exhibits a 70% lower fouling rate than the pristine membrane at a water flux of 110 L (m2 h)-1 and good stability when cleaned with NaOH solutions.Amphipathic peptides that partition into lipid bilayers affect the curvature elastic properties of their host. The penetration depth into the membrane is determined by the angular size of the peptide's hydrophilic region. We demonstrate that only peptides with a small angular size of their hydrophilic region have an intrinsic tendency to render the Gaussian modulus more positive, and we identify conditions at which the Gaussian modulus adopts a positive sign upon increasing the peptide concentration. Our model allows us to also incorporate electrostatic interactions between cationic peptides and anionic lipids on the level of the linear Debye-Hückel model. We show that electrostatic interactions tend to shift the Gaussian modulus toward more positive values. Steric and electrostatic lipid-peptide interactions jointly decrease the effective interaction strength in the headgroup region of the host membrane thus suggesting a generic mechanisms of how certain amphipathic peptides are able to induce the formation of saddle curvatures.A series of highly efficient quasi-solid-state dye-sensitized solar cells (DSCs) is prepared by harnessing the binary cation effect and positive effects of the selected performance enhancers of gel-polymer electrolytes. The new electrolyte is composed of polyacrylonitrile polymer, tetra-hexylammonium iodide (Hex4NI) and KI binary salts as well as 4-tertbutylpyridine and 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium iodide performance enhancers. The charge transport in the series of electrolytes is thermally activated and, accordingly, the temperature dependence of conductivity follows the VTF behavior. The enhancement of conductivity is observed with an increasing mass fraction of KI and decreasing mass fraction of Hex4NI, while the total mass fraction of salts in the electrolyte is kept unchanged. The highest conductivity of 3.74 mS cm-1 at ambient temperature is shown by the sample containing KI only (without Hex4NI) at all the temperatures. Irradiation of the polymethacrylate films by focused polarized light of green (532 nm) and red (633 nm) lasers induces a specific photodeformation of the film surface. In the case of the green light formation of circular "craters" with anisotropic borders was found, whereas for the red light highly asymmetric "hills" were observed.

Cerebral amyloid angiopathy (CAA) is typified by the cerebrovascular deposition of amyloid. The mechanisms underlying the contribution of CAA to neurodegeneration are not currently understood. Although CAA is highly associated with the accumulation of amyloid beta (Aβ), other amyloids are known to associate with the vasculature. Alzheimer's disease (AD) is characterized by parenchymal Aβ deposition, intracellular accumulation of tau, and significant neuroinflammation. CAA increases with age and is present in 85-95% of individuals with AD. A substantial amount of research has focused on understanding the connection between parenchymal amyloid and glial activation and neuroinflammation, while associations between vascular amyloid pathology and glial reactivity remain understudied.

Long-term follow-up reports of low-grade endometrial stromal sarcoma (LGESS) including its clinical course and pathological data are rare. We previously reported the case of a Japanese woman diagnosed with LGESS, who was treated with multidisciplinary therapy. She had been suffering from uterine cervical tumor diagnosed as cervical polyps, or fibroid in statu nascendi, since 24 years old. The patient had survived for 25 years with the disease. This report presents her progress and pathological change since the previous report.
At age 45, the patient experienced a relapse of the remnant LGESS tumor between the right diaphragm and liver. Although chemotherapy was not effective, the tumor was eliminated by proton therapy. At age 46 years, the remnant tumors outside the irradiated field were resected. The disease was originally diagnosed as "neuroendocrine carcinoma (NEC)" using the surgical specimen. Therefore, cisplatin and irinotecan combination chemotherapy were administered to treat the remnant disseminanary treatment including proton therapy. The LGESS tumor differentiated to NET G2-like tissue and then further to adenocarcinoma-like tissue during the long-term follow-up.

Two and 3.5y post-intervention follow-up (2011-13; analyses completed 2019) of participants retained in the Melbourne INFANT Program at its conclusion (child age ~ 19 m; 2008-10) was conducted. The Melbourne INFANT Program is a 15-month, six session program delivered within first-time parent groups in Melbourne, Australia, between child age 4-19 m. It involves strategies to help parents promote healthy diet, physical activity and reduced sedentary behavior in their infants. No intervention was delivered during the follow-up period reported in this paper. ISRCTN Register ISRCTN81847050 , registered 7th November 2007.This study aimed to develop a ternary nanocomposite system of organoclay, glycol-chitosan, and Eudragit®S100 as an effective colon targeted drug delivery carrier to enhance the oral absorption of insulin. A nanocomplex of insulin and aminoclay was prepared via spontaneous co-assembly, which was then coated with glycol-chitosan and Eudragit S®100 (EGAC-Ins). The double coated nanocomplex, EGAC-Ins demonstrated a high entrapment efficiency of greater than 90% and a pH-dependent drug release. The conformational stability of insulin entrapped in EGAC-Ins was effectively maintained in the presence of proteolytic enzymes. When compared to a free insulin solution, EGAC-Ins enhanced drug permeability by approximately sevenfold in Caco-2 cells and enhanced colonic drug absorption in rats. Accordingly, oral EGAC-Ins significantly reduced blood glucose levels in diabetic rats while the hypoglycemic effect of an oral insulin solution was negligible. In conclusion, EGAC-Ins should be a promising colonic delivery system for improving the oral absorption of insulin.
Bee pollen (BP) has been used as a traditional medicine and food diet additive due to its nutritional and biological properties. The potential biological properties of bee pollen vary greatly with the botanical and geographical origin of the pollen grains. This study was conducted to characterize the botanical origin and assess the antioxidant effects of ethanol extracts of 18 different bee pollen (EBP) samples from 16 locations in South Korea and their inhibitory activities on human β-amyloid precursor cleavage enzyme (BACE1), acetylcholinesterase (AChE), human intestinal bacteria, and 5 cancer cell lines.
The botanical origin and classification of each BP sample was evaluated using palynological analysis by observing microscope slides. We measured the biological properties, including antioxidant capacity, inhibitory activities against human BACE1, and AChE, and antiproliferative activities toward five cancer cell lines, of the 18 EBPs. Lactose-free products are more susceptible to chemical and physical modifications during heating and storage, due to the release of glucose and galactose during enzymatic processing, both more reactive than lactose. The present study demonstrates the effect of enzymatic lactose hydrolysis on 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF), whey protein nitrogen index (WPNI) and lactulose used as thermal markers for UHT milk process monitoring. Six milk leading brands which provided regular and lactose-free UHT milk were selected, giving a total of 12 UHT milk samples analyzed in authentic duplicates. All lactose-free samples showed high levels of HMF index (42.15 µmol L-1, against 13.11 µmol L-1 for regular samples) and low lactulose contents (13.03 mg 100 mL-1, against 35.59 mg 100 mL-1 of regular ones). High variations in HMF (55-85%) and lactulose (42-91%) intra-brand analysis indicated that both markers are influenced by the lactose hydrolysis process. Higher level of WPC i.e. 8% resulted in poor stability and encapsulation efficiency of double emulsions at all salt levels. The in-vitro digestibility of protein (IVPD) and starch (IVSD) of the best variant was also estimated. The bars provide 15.74-18.32 g of protein, 332-379 kcal energy, 74.53-83.87 mg calcium, and 555.93-603.80 mg phosphorous per 100 g. The results showed that the organoleptic parameters of the bars were not affected by the proportion of ingredients.

This research explores the qualitative views of university staff and students about smoking on campus during the implementation of a smoke-free policy.
In 2016, an electronic survey was distributed to all current staff and students of a large university in Queensland, Australia during the implementation of a smoke-free policy. The survey consisted of multiple-choice questions about demographics, tobacco use, attitudes towards smoking, awareness of and attitudes towards the policy, and intentions to quit smoking. The final question asked for a short, open-ended response "Would you like to comment on the issue of smoking on QUT* campuses?" This question was extracted from the survey and analysed using inductive thematic analysis. This paper reports the findings from this question.rticipants views about smoking on campus during the implementation of a smoke free policy suggest broad agreement but reflect concerns about enforcement, boundaries, non-smokers and designated areas. Consistent and systematic processes for implementation, maintenance and enforcement of policy goals, and cessation support, is needed to create a non-smoking culture on university campuses.
Plasma volume status (PVS), a marker of plasma volume expansion and contraction, is gaining attention in the field of cardiovascular disease because of its role in the prevention and of the management of heart failure. However, it remains undetermined whether an abnormal PVS is a risk for all-cause and cardiovascular mortality in the general population.
We used a nationwide database of 230,882 subjects (age 40-75 years) who participated in the annual "Specific Health Check and Guidance in Japan" check-up between 2008 and 2011. There were 586 cardiovascular deaths, 2,552 non-cardiovascular deaths, and 3,138 all-cause deaths during the follow-up period of four years. Abnormally high and low PVS were identified from the results of 80% of all subjects (high and low PVS ≥ 7 and < -13.3, respectively). Multivariate Cox proportional hazard regression analysis demonstrated that high PVS was an independent risk factor for all-cause, cardiovascular and non-cardiovascular deaths. In these graphs, the nodes correspond to anatomically identified gray matter areas of the brain, while the edges correspond to the axonal fibers, connecting these areas. In our previous contributions, we have described numerous graph-theoretical phenomena of the human connectomes. Here we map the frequent complete subgraphs of the human brain networks in these subgraphs, every pair of vertices is connected by an edge. We also examine sex differences in the results. The mapping of the frequent subgraphs gives robust substructures in the graph if a subgraph is present in the 80% of the graphs, then, most probably, it could not be an artifact of the measurement or the data processing workflow. We list here the frequent complete subgraphs of the human braingraphs of 413 subjects (238 women and 175 men), each with 463 nodes, with a frequency threshold of 80%, and identify 812 complete subgraphs, which are more frequent in male and 224 complete subgraphs, which are more frequent in female connectomes.At present, the identification of honeysuckle aroma depends on experienced tasters, which results in inconsistencies due to human error. The key odorants have the potential to distinguish the different species and evaluate the quality of honeysuckle. Hence, in this study, a more scientific approach was applied to distinguish various honeysuckles. The volatile compounds of different species and parts of honeysuckle were separately extracted by headspace-solid phase microextraction (HS-SPME) and solvent assisted flavor evaporation (SAFE). Compounds with greater volatility such as aldehydes, limonene, γ-terpinene, and terpinolene were preferentially extracted by HS-SPME. As a complementary extraction method to HS-SPME, SAFE was found to recover comparatively more polar compounds such as eugenol, decanoic acid, and vanillin. Subsequently, key odorants with the highest flavour dilution (FD) factors were detected by aroma extract dilution analysis (AEDA). These were benzaldehyde, 4-ethylphenol, decanoic acid, vanillin, 3-methyl-2-butenal, and β-ionone in honeysuckle flowers and γ-octalactone, 4-ethyl phenol, and vanillin in honeysuckle stem. Finally, principal component analysis (PCA) was conducted to analyze not only the key odorants of species and parts of honeysuckle but also their different origins. The results of PCA suggested that the species of honeysuckle contributed **** more to variations in aroma rather than their origins. The survey consisted of multiple-choice questions about demographics, tobacco use, attitudes towards smoking, awareness of and attitudes towards the policy, and intentions to quit smoking. Plasma volume status (PVS), a marker of plasma volume expansion and contraction, is gaining attention in the field of cardiovascular disease because of its role in the prevention and of the management of heart failure. However, it remains undetermined whether an abnormal PVS is a risk for all-cause and cardiovascular mortality in the general population. We used a nationwide database of 230,882 subjects (age 40-75 years) who participated in the annual "Specific Health Check and Guidance in Japan" check-up between 2008 and 2011. There were 586 cardiovascular deaths, 2,552 non-cardiovascular deaths, and 3,138 all-cause deaths during the follow-up period of four years. Abnormally high and low PVS were identified from the results of 80% of all subjects (high and low PVS ≥ 7 and < -13.3, respectively). Multivariate Cox proportional hazard regression analysis demonstrated that high PVS was an independent risk factor for all-cause, cardiovascular and non-cardiovascular deaths. In these graphs, the nodes correspond to anatomically identified gray matter areas of the brain, while the edges correspond to the axonal fibers, connecting these areas. In our previous contributions, we have described numerous graph-theoretical phenomena of the human connectomes. Here we map the frequent complete subgraphs of the human brain networks in these subgraphs, every pair of vertices is connected by an edge. We also examine sex differences in the results. The mapping of the frequent subgraphs gives robust substructures in the graph if a subgraph is present in the 80% of the graphs, then, most probably, it could not be an artifact of the measurement or the data processing workflow. We list here the frequent complete subgraphs of the human braingraphs of 413 subjects (238 women and 175 men), each with 463 nodes, with a frequency threshold of 80%, and identify 812 complete subgraphs, which are more frequent in male and 224 complete subgraphs, which are more frequent in female connectomes.At present, the identification of honeysuckle aroma depends on experienced tasters, which results in inconsistencies due to human error. The key odorants have the potential to distinguish the different species and evaluate the quality of honeysuckle. Hence, in this study, a more scientific approach was applied to distinguish various honeysuckles. The volatile compounds of different species and parts of honeysuckle were separately extracted by headspace-solid phase microextraction (HS-SPME) and solvent assisted flavor evaporation (SAFE). Compounds with greater volatility such as aldehydes, limonene, γ-terpinene, and terpinolene were preferentially extracted by HS-SPME. As a complementary extraction method to HS-SPME, SAFE was found to recover comparatively more polar compounds such as eugenol, decanoic acid, and vanillin. Subsequently, key odorants with the highest flavour dilution (FD) factors were detected by aroma extract dilution analysis (AEDA). These were benzaldehyde, 4-ethylphenol, decanoic acid, vanillin, 3-methyl-2-butenal, and β-ionone in honeysuckle flowers and γ-octalactone, 4-ethyl phenol, and vanillin in honeysuckle stem. Finally, principal component analysis (PCA) was conducted to analyze not only the key odorants of species and parts of honeysuckle but also their different origins. The results of PCA suggested that the species of honeysuckle contributed much more to variations in aroma rather than their origins. In conclusion, the application of the key odorants combined with PCA was demonstrated as a valid approach to differentiate species, origins, and parts of honeysuckle.This study evaluated the effects of the chronic consumption of different concentrations of alcohol on the experimental periodontitis (EP). 160 rats were divided into 4 groups (EP-NT) rats with EP and no alcohol exposure; (EP-A14) rats with EP exposed to 14% alcohol; (EP-A25) rats with EP exposed to 25% alcohol; (EP-A36) rats with EP exposed to 36% alcohol. The animals from the EP-A14, EP-A25 and EP-A36 groups were subjected to different concentrations of alcohol 30 days before EP induction. The histological characteristics, percentage of bone in the furcation (PBF) and bone metabolism in the furcation region were evaluated. The PBF and tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase (TRAP) data were subjected to statistical analysis. The EP-A14, EP-A25 and EP-A36 groups had lower PBFs compared with the EP-NT group. A more severe inflammatory process and a greater number of TRAP+ cells were also observed.
