  • Tapering or stopping biological disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drugs has been proposed for patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) in remission, but it frequently results in high rates of recurrence. This study evaluates the efficacy and safety of tacrolimus (TAC) as maintenance therapy in patients with established RA in remission after receiving combination therapy with tumor necrosis factor inhibitor (TNFi) and methotrexate (MTX).

    This 24-week, prospective, open-label trial included patients who received TNFi and MTX at stable doses for ≥24 weeks and had low disease activity (LDA), measured by Disease Activity Score-28 for ≥12 weeks. Patients selected one of two arms maintenance (TNFi plus MTX) or switched (TAC plus MTX). The primary outcome was the difference in the proportion of patients maintaining LDA at week 24, which was assessed using a logistic regression model. Adverse events were monitored throughout the study period.

    In efficacy analysis, 80 and 34 patients were included in the maintenance and switched arms, respectively. At week 24, LDA was maintained in 99% and 91% of patients in the maintenance and switched arms, respectively (odds ratio, 0.14; 95% confidence interval, 0.01-1.59). Drug-related adverse effects tended to be more common in the switched arm than in the maintenance arm (20.9% versus 7.1%, respectively) but were well-tolerated.

    This controlled study tested a novel treatment strategy of switching from TNFi to TAC in RA patients with sustained LDA, and the findings suggested that TNFi can be replaced with TAC in most patients without the patients experiencing flare-ups for at least 24 weeks.

Although numerous risk factors are reported in the literature, many are non-modifiable and management of the injury remains difficult. Lower leg muscle structure and function are modifiable characteristics that influence tibial loading during foot-ground contact. Therefore, this study aimed to determine whether long-distance runners with MTSS displayed differences in in vivo lower leg muscle structure and function than matched asymptomatic runners.

    Lower leg structure was assessed using ultrasound and a measure of lower leg circumference to quantify muscle cross-sectional area, thickness and lean lower leg girth. Lower leg function was assessed using a hand-held dynamometer to quantify maximal voluntary isometric contraction strength and a single leg heel raise protocol was used to measure ankle plantar flexor endurance. Outcome variables were compared between the limbs of long-distance runners suffering MTSS (n = 20hether between group differences were a cause or effect of MTSS. Therefore, future prospective studies are required to substantiate the study findings.

Hypophosphatemia can occur in infants experiencing intrauterine malnutrition, sepsis and early high-energy parenteral nutrition (PN) and can cause severe hypercalcemia through an unknown mechanism. Monitoring and supplementation of phosphate (PO4) and calcium (Ca) in the first week of life in preterm infants are still debated.

    We report on a female baby born at 29 weeks' gestation with intrauterine growth retardation (IUGR) experiencing sustained severe hypercalcemia (up to 24 mg/dl corrected Ca) due to hypophosphatemia while on phosphorus-free PN. Hypercalcemia did not improve after hyperhydration and furosemide but responded to infusion of PO4. Eventually, the infant experienced symptomatic hypocalcaemia (ionized Ca 3.4 mg/dl), likely exacerbated by contemporary infusion of albumin. Subsequently, a normalization of both parathyroid hormone (PTH) and alkaline phosphatase (ALP) was observed.

    Although severe hypercalcemia is extremely rare in neonates, clinicians should be aware of the possible occurrence of this life-threatening condition in infants with or at risk to develop hypophosphatemia.   • We present a rare case of external carotid artery-vertebral artery anastomosis via the ascending pharyngeal artery, diagnosed upon cadaveric dissection. The ascending pharyngeal artery gave rise to a branch to the hypoglossal canal, which is a variation of a true persistent fetal hypoglossal artery. Knowledge of persistent carotid-vertebrobasilar anastomoses is important as these fetal vessels can contribute significantly to the posterior cerebral circulation. Only 10 cases of external carotid artery-vertebrobasilar artery anastomoses have been reported to our knowledge, and our case presents the first cadaveric dissection of this rare variation.
    Adrenal ganglioneuromas are rare, differentiated, neuroblastic tumors that originate from the peripheral sympathetic nervous system. Because of their rarity, information is limited, derived from small cases series. Our objective was to characterize this tumor and provide help for its management.

    A retrospective multicenter analysis of adrenal ganglioneuromas from 20 French centers belonging to the COMETE network and one Belgian center.

    Among the 104 cases identified, 59.6% were women (n = 62/104), median age at diagnosis was 29 years, with 24 pediatric cases. 60.6% (n = 63/104) were incidentalomas. Ganglioneuromas were non-secreting tumors in 90.8% of cases (n = 89/98), whereas the preoperative hormonal evaluation was indeterminate for 9.2% of patients (n = 9/98). CT imaging, performed on 96 patients, revealed large tumors (median diameter of 50 mm) with a non-contrast density > 10 Hounsfield units in 98.1% (n = 52/53) and calcifications in 64.6% of cases (n = 31/48). Increased uptake on 123I-MIBG sccurrence. By adopting a comparative approach, this study focuses on three interventions in the history of Arctic science and exploration the construction of scientific expertise surrounding the relationship between the 'armchair' and the field, the role of transnational networks, and the significance of maps as travelling epistemic objects in the production of knowledge about the Arctic regions. In bringing both campaigns in conversation with each other, this article demonstrates that the histories of Kane's and Petermann's campaigns did not constitute isolated episodes but form part of a transnational nexus of imperial science and Arctic exploration in the nineteenth century. Moreover, based on research in libraries and archives in the United States, Germany and England, this study reconnects otherwise siloed collections and contributes new findings on the interpersonal networks of science and exploration. Finally, this article illustrates the importance of adopting comparative transnational approaches for understanding the fluid and reciprocal nature of Arctic science throughout the transatlantic world.In this article, Susan Krieger reflects on how lesbian realities have figured in her published work over the years, although the word "lesbian" did not appear in the books' titles. For prophylaxis of respiratory infections, however, mucosal immunity should be induced. In this study, we investigated the effect of pulmonary administration of a nanoparticle comprising ovalbumin (OVA) as a model antigen, BK, and γ-PGA on induction of mucosal immunity in the lungs and serum. The complex was strongly taken up by RAW264.7 and DC2.4cells. After pulmonary administration, lung retention was longer for the OVA/BK/γ-PGA complex than for OVA alone. OVA-specific serum immunoglobulin (Ig)G was highly induced by the complex. High IgG and IgA levels were also induced in the bronchoalveolar lavage fluid, and in vivo toxicities were not observed. In conclusion, we effectively and safely induced mucosal immunity by pulmonary administration of an OVA/BK/γ-PGA complex.

  • The prevalence of diabetes mellitus is increasing at an epidemic level, leading to a consequent increase of its chronic complications, including neuropathy. Diabetic neuropathy constitutes a heterogeneous group of disorders with distinct clinical presentations and pathophysiological mechanisms. These distinct forms may be categorised according to their clinical presentation as symmetrical (distal symmetrical polyneuropathy, autonomic and acute sensory neuropathy) and focal or multifocal (radiculoplexus neuropathies, entrapment syndromes, cranial palsies and other mononeuropathies). In the search for new targets for lung cancer treatment, exosomes have become a major focus of research. Principal component analysis (PCA) was applied to classify samples into different phases. Subsequently, differentially expressed genes (DEGs) analysis, Gene Ontology (GO) and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) pathway functional enrichment analyses were performed, and protein-protein interaction (PPI) networks created for each phase. Furthermore, based on the results of the PPI, hub genes in each phase were identified by molecular complex detection combined with the ClueGO algorithm.

    Perimenopausal women experience a wide variety of systemic symptoms hot flashes, sweating, mental health concerns and various oral sensory complaints (OSC). OSC in perimenopausal women include xerostomia, taste disturbance and burning mouth. However, the factors associated with these OSC have not been identified. The purpose of this investigation was to elucidate the factors associated with OSC in perimenopausal women.

    The study cohort comprised 43 perimenopausal women aged 45-55years. Data on medical history, medications, menstrual status, menopausal symptoms, quality of life, xerostomia, taste disturbance and burning mouth were collected. Volumes of unstimulated and stimulated saliva were measured. Tongue coating was evaluated according to a tongue coating index. Univariate analysis was performed to identify factors significantly associated with having xerostomia, taste disturbance, burning mouth and more than two OSC (2OSC). Next, the factors strongly associated with these symptoms were examined by logistic regression analysis.

    The number of menopausal symptoms was significantly higher, and volume of unstimulated saliva wassignificantly lower in participants with xerostomia, taste disturbance, burning mouth or 2OSC than in those without these characteristics. Agents targeting the central nervous system were more frequently taken by participants with burning mouth and 2OSC than by those without these characteristics.     Genome-scale metabolic model (GSMM) is a powerful tool for the study of cellular metabolic characteristics. With the development of multi-omics measurement techniques in recent years, new methods that integrating multi-omics data into the GSMM show promising effects on the predicted results. It does not only improve the accuracy of phenotype prediction but also enhances the reliability of the model for simulating complex biochemical phenomena, which can promote theoretical breakthroughs for specific gene target identification or better understanding the cell metabolism on the system level.

    Based on the basic GSMM model iHL1210 of Aspergillus niger, we integrated large-scale enzyme kinetics and proteomics data to establish a GSMM based on enzyme constraints, termed a GEM with Enzymatic Constraints using Kinetic and Omics data (GECKO). The results show that enzyme constraints effectively improve the model's phenotype prediction ability, and extended the model's potential to guide target gene identification ing enzymes' abundance information into GSMM is very effective for improving model performance with A. niger. Enzyme-constrained model can be used as a powerful tool for predicting the metabolic phenotype of A. niger by incorporating proteome data. In the foreseeable future, with the fast development of measurement techniques, and more precise and rich proteomics quantitative data being obtained for A. niger, the enzyme-constrained GSMM model will show greater application space on the system level.
    A triple-tapered polished femoral stem was implanted with line-to-line cementing technique. The purpose of this study was to determine the survivorship, loosening rate, stem subsidence, radiologic changes and clinical outcomes in the minimum 10-year follow-up.

    This was a retrospective study done in three institutes. Finally, 118 hips in 97 patients could be followed-up at the mean follow-up period of 126.3 months. The survivorship, radiological and clinical outcomes were investigated.

    Radiologically, 107 hips (90.7%) were categorized to Barrack cementing grade A, and 108 stems (91.5%) were inserted in neutral position. All hips were not loose and were not revised due to any reason. Survival with revision for any reason as the endpoint was 100% after 10 years. At the last follow-up, the mean subsidence was 0.43 mm, and the subsidence was less than 1 mm in 110 hips (93.2%). JOA hip score improved from 42.7 ± 8.9 points preoperatively to 92.8 ± 6.8 points at the last follow-up. No patient complained thigh pain.

    Gulf War Illness (GWI) is a chronic, debilitating, multi-symptom condition affecting as many as one-third of the nearly 700,000U.S. troops deployed to the Middle East during the 1990-1991 Gulf War (GW). The treatment of GWI relies on symptom management. A common challenge in studying the efficacy of interventions for symptom management is participant recruitment related to factors such as the burden of travelling to study sites and the widespread dispersion of Veterans with GWI.   • This study provides a reference for the remote sensing of soil fertility in forests of different soil types and a theoretical basis for developing portable equipment for the hyperspectral measurement of SOM content in forest habitats.During the COVID-19 pandemic, governments globally had to impose severe contact restriction measures and social mobility limitations in order to limit the exposure of the population to COVID-19. These public health policy decisions were informed by statistical models for infection rates in national populations. In this work, we are interested in modelling the temporal evolution of national-level infection counts for the United Kingdom (UK-Wales, England, Scotland), Germany (GM), Italy (IT), Spain (SP), Japan (JP), Australia (AU) and the United States (US). We model the national-level infection counts for the period January 2020 to January 2021, thus covering both the pre- and post-vaccine roll-out periods, in order to better understand the most reliable model structure for the COVID-19 epidemic growth curve. We achieve this by exploring a variety of stochastic population growth models and comparing their calibration, with respect to in-sample fitting and out-of-sample forecasting, both with and without exposuilt sentiment index, which we construct from various authoritative public health news reporting. The news reporting media we employed were the New York Times, the Guardian, the Telegraph, Reuters global blog, as well as national and international health authorities the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control, the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe, the United States Centres for Disease Control and Prevention, and the World Health Organisation. We find that exposure adjustments that incorporate sentiment are better able to calibrate to early stages of infection spread in all countries under study.Countries across the world responded to the COVID-19 pandemic with what might well be the set of biggest state-led mobility and activity restrictions in the history of humankind. But how effective were these measures across countries? Compared to multiple recent studies that document an association between such restrictions and the control of the contagion, we use an instrumental variable approach to estimate the causal effect of these restrictions on mobility, and the growth rate of confirmed cases and deaths during the first wave of the pandemic. Using the level of stringency in the rest of the world to predict the level of stringency of the restriction measures in a country, we show while stricter contemporaneous measures affected mobility, stringency in seven to fourteen days mattered most for containing the contagion. Heterogeneity analysis, by various institutional inequalities, reveals that even though the restrictions reduced mobility more in relatively less-developed countries, the causal effect of a reduction in mobility was higher in more developed countries. We propose several explanations. Our results highlight the need to complement mobility and activity restrictions with other health and information measures, especially in less-developed countries, to combat the COVID-19 pandemic effectively.Since Sundqvist introduced the term "extramural English" in 2009, empirical research on extramural language learning has continued to expand. To present a timely picture of the field of extramural language learning, this study conducts a review of 33 relevant articles retrieved from Scopus and Web of Science databases. The results showed the five types of target languages frequently investigated in this field (i.e., English, German, French, Chinese, and Japanese) and seven main types of extramural learning activities (i.e., playing digital games, watching videos, reading, listening to audios, having technology-enhanced socialisation, having face-to-face socialisation, and writing compositions). People's engagement in extramural language learning was overall high, especially listening to audios and playing digital games, mediated by the relationship between the difficulty of the activities and people's target language proficiency levels, gender, and the interactive environment. Extramural language learning was overall effective for language development and enhancing affective states in language learning. The effectiveness may be influenced by the involvement of language inputs and outputs and the amount of engagement time. Implications for practitioners were suggested concerning encouraging digital gameplay, emphasising formal language instruction, and creating positive interactive environments for extramural language learning.In contrast to research on team-sports, delayed maturation has been observed in higher-skilled gymnasts, leading to atypical distributions of the relative age effect. Recent studies have reported intra-sport differences in the relative age effect and given the task demands across gymnastics apparatus, we expected to find evidence for the influence of apparatus specialism. We examined the presence of a relative age effects within a sample of elite, international, women's artistic gymnasts (N = 806, Ncountries = 87), and further sampled our data from vault, bars, beam, and floor major competition finalists. Poisson regression analysis indicated no relative age effect in the full sample (p = .55; R2 adj. = .01) but an effect that manifested when analysing apparatus independently. The Index of Discrimination (ID) analysis provided evidence of an inverse relative age effect identified for beam (p = .01; ID = 1.27; R2 adj. = .12), a finding that was corroborated by a marginal effect in our vault finalists (p = .08; ID = 1.21; R2 adj. = .06).   • Recurrent implantation failure (RIF) is diagnosed when good-quality embryos repeatedly fail to implant after transfer in several in vitro fertilization (IVF) treatment cycles. Different expression profiles in maternal mRNAs could be referring to many diseases including RIF. This study aimed to reveal significantly dysregulated selected genes expression between healthy fertile women and RIF patients in the implantation window days of the natural menstrual cycle. MME, WWC1, TNC, and FOXP3 genes were chosen as target genes regarding their possible relations with the implantation process. Pathways with these genes were identified and the relationship between these pathways and RIF was investigated. In this study, the endometrial biopsy samples were collected in the secretory phase (cycle day 20-24) of the menstrual cycle from RIF patients (n = 34) and healthy fertile controls (n = 34). After "Pathway and network-oriented GWAS analysis" (PANOGA) and "Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes" (KEGG) pathway analysisbe speculated to cause implantation failure by restricting the invasion of trophoblast cells. Increasing WWC1 gene expression in the Hippo signaling pathway inhibits "Yes-associated protein 1" (YAP) expression, which is a transcriptional cofactor. Inhibition of YAP protein expression may impair the implantation process by causing the failure of endometrial decidualization. The TNC gene is located in the focal adhesion pathway and this pathway reduces cell adhesion on the endometrial surface to facilitate the attachment of the embryo to the endometrium. The reason for implantation failure might be that the intercellular connections are not suitable for implantation as a result of decreased expression of the focal adhesion pathway in which the TNC gene is effective. Considering the relations between the pathways of the target genes and the implantation process, changes in the expression of target genes might be a cause of RIF.
    Physical activity may reduce the risk of some types of cancer in men. Biological mechanisms may involve changes in hormone concentrations; however, this relationship is not well established. Therefore, we aimed to investigate the associations of physical activity with circulating insulin-like growth factor-I (IGF-I), sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBG, which modifies sex hormone activity), and total and free testosterone concentrations, and the extent these associations might be mediated by body mass index (BMI).

    Circulating concentrations of these hormones and anthropometric measurements and self-reported physical activity data were available for 117,100 healthy male UK Biobank participants at recruitment. Objectively measured accelerometer physical activity levels were also collected on average 5.7years after recruitment in 28,000 men. Geometric means of hormone concentrations were estimated using multivariable-adjusted analysis of variance, with and without adjustment for BMI.

    Routine health checkup and cancer screening rates among women are suboptimal, partially due to the health care disparities by race/ethnicity in the USA. This study examined the previously understudied associations between routine health checkup, cervical cancer screening, and breast cancer screening by race/ethnicity using the national representative sample of women.

    Data were obtained from three cycles (2017, 2018, and 2019) of the Health Information National Trends Survey (HINTS) (n = 12,227). Survey-weighted logistic regressions were evaluated to assess associations between routine health checkup and cervical and breast cancer screening compliance with the established guidelines with the age criteria and frequency of screening by race/ethnicity (Black, White, Hispanic, and Other).

    This study included 6,941 women in the cervical cancer screening and 8,005 women for breast cancer screening, considering the age criteria. Women who had received routine health checkups were more likely to meet the cervical cancer screening guideline (Odds ratio 3.24, p < 0.05) and breast cancer screening guideline (OR 5.86, p < 0.05) compared to women who did not receive routine health checkups. While routine health checkups were associated with both types of cancer screenings in most racial/ethnic groups, analyses stratified by race/ethnicity suggest that Hispanic women and Other women did not benefit from routine health checkup in relation to cervical and breast cancer screening, respectively.

The results of the study showed that except four studies, the studies generally improved the quality of life and reduced the symptoms in women with fibromyalgia. The results of the study suggest that most psychological interventions affect the quality of life in women with fibromyalgia. Therefore, besides pharmacological therapy, psychological interventions can be used by health-care providers to reduce the symptoms of fibromyalgia and improve the quality of their life.

MME, WWC1, TNC, and FOXP3 genes were chosen as target genes regarding their possible relations with the implantation process. Pathways with these genes were identified and the relationship between these pathways and RIF was investigated. In this study, the endometrial biopsy samples were collected in the secretory phase (cycle day 20-24) of the menstrual cycle from RIF patients (n = 34) and healthy fertile controls (n = 34). After "Pathway and network-oriented GWAS analysis" (PANOGA) and "Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes" (KEGG) pathway analysisbe speculated to cause implantation failure by restricting the invasion of trophoblast cells. Increasing WWC1 gene expression in the Hippo signaling pathway inhibits "Yes-associated protein 1" (YAP) expression, which is a transcriptional cofactor. Inhibition of YAP protein expression may impair the implantation process by causing the failure of endometrial decidualization. The TNC gene is located in the focal adhesion pathway and this pathway reduces cell adhesion on the endometrial surface to facilitate the attachment of the embryo to the endometrium. The reason for implantation failure might be that the intercellular connections are not suitable for implantation as a result of decreased expression of the focal adhesion pathway in which the TNC gene is effective. Considering the relations between the pathways of the target genes and the implantation process, changes in the expression of target genes might be a cause of RIF. Physical activity may reduce the risk of some types of cancer in men. Biological mechanisms may involve changes in hormone concentrations; however, this relationship is not well established. Therefore, we aimed to investigate the associations of physical activity with circulating insulin-like growth factor-I (IGF-I), sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBG, which modifies sex hormone activity), and total and free testosterone concentrations, and the extent these associations might be mediated by body mass index (BMI). Circulating concentrations of these hormones and anthropometric measurements and self-reported physical activity data were available for 117,100 healthy male UK Biobank participants at recruitment. Objectively measured accelerometer physical activity levels were also collected on average 5.7years after recruitment in 28,000 men. Geometric means of hormone concentrations were estimated using multivariable-adjusted analysis of variance, with and without adjustment for BMI. The associations betweergely attenuated. This study examined the previously understudied associations between routine health checkup, cervical cancer screening, and breast cancer screening by race/ethnicity using the national representative sample of women. Data were obtained from three cycles (2017, 2018, and 2019) of the Health Information National Trends Survey (HINTS) (n = 12,227). Survey-weighted logistic regressions were evaluated to assess associations between routine health checkup and cervical and breast cancer screening compliance with the established guidelines with the age criteria and frequency of screening by race/ethnicity (Black, White, Hispanic, and Other). This study included 6,941 women in the cervical cancer screening and 8,005 women for breast cancer screening, considering the age criteria. Women who had received routine health checkups were more likely to meet the cervical cancer screening guideline (Odds ratio 3.24, p < 0.05) and breast cancer screening guideline (OR 5.86, p < 0.05) compared to women who did not receive routine health checkups. While routine health checkups were associated with both types of cancer screenings in most racial/ethnic groups, analyses stratified by race/ethnicity suggest that Hispanic women and Other women did not benefit from routine health checkup in relation to cervical and breast cancer screening, respectively. Promotion of routine health checkups could promote cancer screening among women across racial/ethnic groups, although specific racial/ethnic groups may require additional support. Finally, the quality of 16 experimental and semi-experimental clinical trials was evaluated using the Jadad scale. The psychological interventions affecting the quality of life in women with fibromialgia included cognitive-behavioral therapy and behavioral therapy, coping strategies training, mindfulness, acceptance and commitment treatment, hypnosis, meditation, music therapy, short-term psychodynamic psychotherapy and writing emotions. The results of the study showed that except four studies, the studies generally improved the quality of life and reduced the symptoms in women with fibromyalgia. The results of the study suggest that most psychological interventions affect the quality of life in women with fibromyalgia. Therefore, besides pharmacological therapy, psychological interventions can be used by health-care providers to reduce the symptoms of fibromyalgia and improve the quality of their life.

    Maternal vitamin D status during pregnancy has been linked with the risk of atopic dermatitis (AD) in children, while the results were inconsistent. The objective of this study was to assess the potential association.

    Serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) levels were measured in pregnant women from the birth cohort MKFOAD. Infant AD was diagnosed according to Williams' criteria. Multivariate logistic regression model was used to examine the association of maternal serum 25(OH)D levels in the first, second, and third trimester of gestation with the risk of infant AD at first year of age.

    In total, 121 (26.5%) of 456 infants developed AD prior to 1year of age. In general, higher maternal serum 25(OH)D levels throughout pregnancy were associated with increased risks of AD in infants prior to 1year of age in multivariate logistic regression models, with borderline statistical significance in the first (per ln unit increase adjusted OR=1.93, 95% CI 0.96, 3.88) and second (per ln unit increase adjusted OR=1.72, 95% CI 0.93, 3.19) trimester. Multivariate logistic regression models using categorical variables of maternal 25(OH)D levels by tertiles showed similar results Infants born to mothers with serum 25(OH)D levels in the highest tertile had higher risk of AD than those with 25(OH)D in the lowest tertile.

    In this study, we evaluate and compare single isocenter multiple target VMAT (SIMT) and Conformal Arc Informed VMAT (CAVMAT) radiosurgery's sensitivity to uncertainties in dosimetric leaf gap (DLG) and treatment delivery. CAVMAT is a novel planning technique that uses multiple target conformal arcs as the starting point for limited inverse VMAT optimization.

  • Although the identified negative effects are common to a range of complex nexuses, there is a clear distinction with the DRR-CCA nexus comprising virtually indistinguishable practices in Southern Africa. There is, as such, no practical reason for keeping them apart. The parallel structures for DRR and CCA are instead the result of pervasive institutionalisation across the region, driven by coercive, mimetic and normative pressures coming from both within and abroad. Data in the form of observation notes, document analysis and interviews were analysed using grounded-theory principles. Ten inter-related variables or mechanisms emerged from the analysis. The theoretical model consists of four reinforcing (R) feedback loops (R1, R2, R3 and R4), respectively, which explain how the understanding of community resilience in the informal settlement maps on to the relative achievement systems archetype. Negative reinforcing behaviour would explain the lack of understanding of community resilience, while positive reinforcing behaviour indicates how an understanding of community resilience develops. In addition, the variable with the leverage to improve the mechanisms influencing the understanding of community resilience was found to be the 'level of public education and awareness'. The theory of how these variables behave in context was represented as a qualitative system dynamics model.This article will address the disaster resilience village (DRV) approach as a disaster preparedness method in Indonesia. This scheme became operational in 2012, exactly 5 years after disaster management legislation was passed in 2007. This DRV strategy is a component of the central government's decentralisation of disaster management to local governments. Using a method of doctrinal legal review, this study argues that the DRV approach to disaster preparedness at the village level is inefficient. That is because the village apparatus is the central player in this DRV, but residents of disaster-prone areas are regarded as an afterthought when it comes to disaster management. Consequently, efforts to strengthen emergency preparedness for residents in disaster-prone areas will be harmed. As a result, it is unsurprising that whenever a disaster occurs in Indonesia, the death toll and damage to property remain high. This is because people who live in disaster-prone areas lack a framework for transforming knowledge and scientific experience with disasters. In addition, this DRV strategy opposes previous disaster experts' community-based and transformative approaches. However, direct field research on communities living in disaster-prone areas is needed to obtain empirical evidence of the DRV approach's shortcomings.Worldwide drought has significance and continues to pose long-lasting effects on the agricultural sector, including South Africa. The recurring drought is a major challenge to smallholder livestock farmers in the Northern Cape Province of South Africa. This study assesses the perception of smallholder livestock farmers towards agricultural drought resilience. The study utilised a perception index score using primary data collected from 207 smallholder livestock farmers following a structured questionnaire survey and multistage sampling procedures. The study found that the average perception index of the role of social networks and government to enhance agricultural drought resilience was negative, which implied that their role in enhancing resilience towards agricultural drought was insufficient. However, the perception of smallholder livestock farmers on the role of social networks was lower than the role of government. This study recommends coordination and cooperation amongst all role players to reinforce strategies to enhance smallholder livestock farmers' resilience. This includes coordinator amongst the local, provincial government, African Farmers' Association of South Africa, extension officers, private sectors, monitoring agencies in terms of reliable early warning information and communication amongst decision-makers. Collaboration amongst government departments at the national and provincial levels should be strengthening to enhance farmer's resilience. The collaboration includes the Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries at the national level, Provincial Departments of Agriculture, National and Provincial Disaster Management Centres, South African Weather Service and Department of Water Affairs. Smallholder livestock farmers' awareness of the significance of social networking and government participation should be promoted.Disasters are among the crises that can test the decision making skill of elected and appointed public officials from planning through response and recovery. The COVID-19 crisis, a public health emergency rather than one with immediate damage to the built environment, has affected many aspects of community life. Experiences in responding to the pandemic will likely stimulate fresh planning initiatives for public health emergencies. How then should emergency planners approach planning and response tasks? The All-Hazards approach has been a mainstay of both research and policymaking for over 40 years, but it has come under recent criticism. In this paper, we consider if the All-Hazards approach to disaster management is still viable. Comparing the management needs that emerged in the pandemic with those of disasters from more familiar hazard agents, we conclude that the All-Hazards approach is valid and can continue to guide policymakers in their hazard and disaster management activities.

This study assesses the perception of smallholder livestock farmers towards agricultural drought resilience. The study utilised a perception index score using primary data collected from 207 smallholder livestock farmers following a structured questionnaire survey and multistage sampling procedures. The study found that the average perception index of the role of social networks and government to enhance agricultural drought resilience was negative, which implied that their role in enhancing resilience towards agricultural drought was insufficient. However, the perception of smallholder livestock farmers on the role of social networks was lower than the role of government. This study recommends coordination and cooperation amongst all role players to reinforce strategies to enhance smallholder livestock farmers' resilience. This includes coordinator amongst the local, provincial government, African Farmers' Association of South Africa, extension officers, private sectors, monitoring agencies in terms of reliable early warning information and communication amongst decision-makers. Collaboration amongst government departments at the national and provincial levels should be strengthening to enhance farmer's resilience. The collaboration includes the Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries at the national level, Provincial Departments of Agriculture, National and Provincial Disaster Management Centres, South African Weather Service and Department of Water Affairs. Smallholder livestock farmers' awareness of the significance of social networking and government participation should be promoted.Disasters are among the crises that can test the decision making skill of elected and appointed public officials from planning through response and recovery. The COVID-19 crisis, a public health emergency rather than one with immediate damage to the built environment, has affected many aspects of community life. Experiences in responding to the pandemic will likely stimulate fresh planning initiatives for public health emergencies. How then should emergency planners approach planning and response tasks? The All-Hazards approach has been a mainstay of both research and policymaking for over 40 years, but it has come under recent criticism. In this paper, we consider if the All-Hazards approach to disaster management is still viable. Comparing the management needs that emerged in the pandemic with those of disasters from more familiar hazard agents, we conclude that the All-Hazards approach is valid and can continue to guide policymakers in their hazard and disaster management activities.
