  • To determine whether idealized anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (IACL-R) restores normal gait features, and whether inflammatory factors are involved in the pathogenesisof post-traumatic osteoarthritis (PTOA).

    Fourteen mature female minipigs were allocated to a sham group (n=7) or an IACL-R group (n=7). Load asymmetry during gait was recorded using a pressure-sensing walkway measurement system to evaluate the gait features of the right knee joint before and after surgery.     Swing time and stance time returned to their preoperative values on day 31, while maximum force, contact area, peak force ,and impulse returned to their preoperative values on day 45 after the surgery in the IACL-R group (P=0.073, 0.053, 0.107, 0.052, 0.152, and 0.059, respectively).Thus, IACL-R restored normal gait. Here, we review the effects of plant genetics and root exudates on root microbiome recruitment, and discuss methodological advances in data integration approaches that can help us to better understand and optimise the crop-microbiome interaction for a more sustainable agriculture.

Ruxolitinib is an FDA approved inhibitor of JAK1 and JAK2. We performed a phase I/II trial investigating the safety and efficacy of the combination of trastuzumab and ruxolitinib in patients with trastuzumab-resistant metastatic HER2+ breast cancer.

    Patients with metastatic HER2+ breast cancer progressing on at least 2 lines of HER2-directed therapy were eligible. The phase I portion determined the tolerable dose of ruxolitinib in combination with trastuzumab. The primary objective of the phase II was to assess the progression free survival (PFS) of the combination of ruxolitinib plus trastuzumab compared to historical control.

    Twenty-eight patients were enrolled, with a median number of prior therapies of 4.5. Ruxolitinib 25mg twice daily was the recommended phase II dose with no dose limiting toxicities (DLTs).     Prior studies have noted that zinc finger E-box binding homeobox 1 (ZEB1) is a master transcription regulator, affecting the expression of nearly 2000 genes in breast cancer cells, especially in the epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) process. The goal of this theoretical article is to introduce the Multidimensional Model of Social Media Use (MMSMU), which aims to provide a useful framework for researchers and practitioners to study and understand young people's social media use in relation to their psychological well-being. The model attends to three major dimensions activities performed on social media, motives for social media use, and communication partners connected through social media. We present empirical evidence showing whether each dimension is associated with better or poorer well-being and identify or propose mechanisms explaining the associations.   • The superhydrophobic and superoleophilic MS/PDA/DT sponge has the potential as a promising adsorbent for oil/water separation.The buckling behavior of latticed columns had been widely investigated based on the theory of Euler, Engesser and Timoshenko shear beam. Although these methods had been formulated and proved to be accurate in case of special assumptions, the influences of lacing bars on the buckling behavior of latticed columns were unclear. This paper modeled a general four-legged latticed column to study the influence of the cross-section characteristics of lacing bars along with their imperfections on the buckling capacity of latticed columns. Three loading conditions and four geometric imperfect models were built to testify the performance of lacing bars. To calculate the buckling load of latticed columns with imperfections accurately, advanced nonlinear analytical procedures using Newton-Raphson incremental-iterative method (ANAP-NR) and Risk arc-length incremental-iterative method (ANAP-Risk) were developed, and then validated by FE software ABAQUS. The current data in the paper show the maximum variation on the critical buckling load of latticed columns, caused by the cross-section area, the bending moment of inertia outer lacing plane, and the imperfections of lacing bars, could reach 68%, 30%, and 25%. Recent study has shown that inducing mitophagy of cardiomyocytes is a crucial method to alleviate ischemia-reperfusion injury. While, Polo-like kinase 1 (PLK1) can induce the mitophagy of breast cancer cells. Moreover, PLK1 was able to promote the expression of p-AMPK and FUNDC1, which are the protective factors for myocardium. Therefore, the mouse model of ischemia/reperfusion was established and the effect of PLK1 on ischemia reperfusion induced myocardial damage was investigated. The PLK1 was overexpressed in H9c2 cells and rat model of ischemia/reperfusion. Ischemia reperfusion inhibited the expression of PLK1. While overexpression of PLK1 relieved the myocardial infarction and myocardium apoptosis through inducing mitophagy in rats model of ischemia reperfusion. In vitro, the H9c2 cells overexpressing the PLK1 were treated with the hypoxia and reoxygenation and the apoptosis, survival rate and expression of mitophagy-related proteins of H9c2 cells were detected using the flow cytometry, CCK-8 assay and western blotting. The results reveled that overexpression of PLK1 alleviated the hypoxia and reoxygenation induced apoptosis of H9c2 cells and promoted the expression of mitophagy-related proteins.   • From 2016 to 2040 the number of people with dementia in the United Kingdom is expected to increase by 57%, while 70% percent of it is due to a higher life expectancy. Thus, we analyzed the overall and age-stratified effect of physical activity on risk of dementia in participants with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) of the English Longitudinal Study of Ageing (ELSA). Participants of the ELSA, aged over 50 with MCI, were followed-up nine times between 2002 and 2019. Physical activity was assessed using a self-reported, validated questionnaire and participants were classified as inactive, low, or moderate-to-high active. Medical diagnosis of dementia was self-reported or determined using the Informant Questionnaire on Cognitive Decline in the Elderly. Data from 521 participants with MCI were analyzed (56% women; mean [SD] age, 68.7 [10.6]). Over 17-year follow-up, 20.5 (95%CI 17.3 to 24.2)% were diagnosed with dementia. The risk of incident dementia was reduced in participants engaging in low (HR 0.34; 95%CI 0.22 to 0.54) or moderate-to-high (HR 0.16; 95%CI 0.08 to 0.33) levels of physical activity. Risk of dementia in adults aged 80 or more engaging in low or moderate-to-high levels of physical activity was not different from inactive adults aged between 50 and 69 years. Results were sustained after competing risk regression model and sensitivity analyses to reduce the impact of reverse causality.     From 2016 to 2040 the number of people with dementia in the United Kingdom is expected to increase by 57%, while 70% percent of it is due to a higher life expectancy. Thus, we analyzed the overall and age-stratified effect of physical activity on risk of dementia in participants with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) of the English Longitudinal Study of Ageing (ELSA). Participants of the ELSA, aged over 50 with MCI, were followed-up nine times between 2002 and 2019. Physical activity was assessed using a self-reported, validated questionnaire and participants were classified as inactive, low, or moderate-to-high active. Medical diagnosis of dementia was self-reported or determined using the Informant Questionnaire on Cognitive Decline in the Elderly. Data from 521 participants with MCI were analyzed (56% women; mean [SD] age, 68.7 [10.6]). Over 17-year follow-up, 20.5 (95%CI 17.3 to 24.2)% were diagnosed with dementia. The risk of incident dementia was reduced in participants engaging in low (HR 0.34; 95%CI 0.22 to 0.54) or moderate-to-high (HR 0.16; 95%CI 0.08 to 0.33) levels of physical activity. Risk of dementia in adults aged 80 or more engaging in low or moderate-to-high levels of physical activity was not different from inactive adults aged between 50 and 69 years. Results were sustained after competing risk regression model and sensitivity analyses to reduce the impact of reverse causality. These two anticoagulant strategies were connected by glucose oxidase (GOx), which catalyzed the oxidation of glucose to produce hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and local acidic environment. The generated H2O2 stimulated H2O2-responsive nanogels release RIVA to obtain continuous antithrombogenicity. Patients who underwent comrgical staging of eEOC improves DFS for the price of increasing post-operative complications and time to chemotherapy but does not affect OS. To improve the ability to protect the SOC by optimizing tillage management, this study investigated the laboratory-based SOC mineralization (decomposition) and soil chemical properties under different tillage practices, including no tillage with straw mulch (NTS), rotary tillage with straw incorporated (RTS), moldboard plow tillage with straw incorporated (CTS) and moldboard plow tillage with straw removal (CT). Soil samples of six sampling dates from April 2017 to October 2018 were incubated at 25 °C and 70% water holding capacity for 60 d. Repeated Variance Analyses were conducted to compare the means of different treatments. The results showed that the average cumulative SOC mineralization (Cm) at the 0-5 cm soil depth was 7.09 g CO2 kg-1 soil under NTS, which was higher (P less then 0.05) than that of the other treatments. However, the C mineralizability at both the 0-5 and 5-10 cm soil depths were lower (P less then 0.05) under the NTS (0.16 and 0.15 g CO2 g-1 SOC) compared with the CTS and CT. Non-microbial CO2 emissions (CO2 emissions in sterilized soil) contributed to the lower C mineralizability under NTS, due to the lower mineralizability (0.041-0.089 g CO2 g-1 SOC) of sterilized soil under this treatment. Furthermore, some of the abiotic factors (e.g., C/N ratio and SOC content) significantly correlated with the Cm and C mineralizability. These factors might be critical for the ability to protect SOC under NTS. In summary, conservation tillage is an optimal management due to its protection on SOC, and part of this protection appeared to have been contributed by the soil abiotic factors, which were formed by long-term tillage management.Alum sludge, an Al-oxyhydroxide rich waste product from water treatment practices, has the potential to be valorized as a P adsorbent material. In this study, granulation and subsequent calcination of alum sludge were proposed to overcome these issues and to improve the P adsorption properties of alum-based adsorbent (ABA) materials. The effect of calcination temperature on the physicochemical properties of granular material was examined using X-ray diffraction, mass-spectroscopy coupled thermogravimetric analysis, Fourier-transform infrared spectrometry and specific surface area analysis, combined with density and crushing strength measurements. The ABA material obtained at 550 °C showed superior P adsorption properties and, therefore, this material was selected for further P adsorption testing and characterization (scanning electron microscopy and sieving). Batch P adsorption tests showed that this material had a maximum P adsorption capacity of 7.27 mg-P g-1. Kinetic adsorption tests determined the effect of the solid-to-liquid ratio and the granule particle size on the P removal. Finally, the performance of the ABA-550 material was tested in a pilot-scale adsorption setup, using a surface water stream (0.47 mg-P L-1) at a flow rate of 200 L h-1. During the test, the P removal efficiency always exceeded 86%, while the material maintained its structural stability. The results of this study illustrate the potential of granulated/calcined ABA materials for P adsorption, paving the way for the industrial application of this novel, sustainable P removal technology.The present study aimed to investigate the copper distribution in a river through the integrated utilization of the soil hydrological assessment model and water quality model. The copper was selected as the model chemical and scenarios of various copper effluent control measures and impacts of the heavy rainfall by climate change on copper concentration were simulated. The results showed that the aqueous copper was adsorbed to suspended solids and the high aqueous copper concentration resulted in a high copper concentration in the sediment. In dry seasons, the aqueous copper concentration increased 215% comparing to the 2006-2016 average (baseline) concentration and a 20% decrease in copper concentration in the sediment was observed due to less wash-out solid. Under the impact of enhanced rainfall by climate change, the aqueous copper concentration decreased due to the increased river flow, which also reduced the copper deposition causing the copper concentration in the sediment lower than that in the baseline condition. In the middle and downstream river sections, the copper concentration in the water and sediment phases decreased around 66% by implementing a more-stringent effluent standard. The suspended solid played a key role for copper movement in a river. The copper accumulation in the sediment might be alleviated by reducing its aqueous concentration.

Infection was monitored by daily testing of cloacal and oro-nasal swabs with reverse transcription-real-time PCR and by serology. Vaccinated birds were completely protected against clinical disease and virus excretion was significantly reduced compared to the unvaccinated controls that all died during the experiment. The reproduction ratio, which is the average number of secondary infections caused by an infectious bird, was significantly lower in the vaccinated group (0.82 (95% CI 0.38-1.75)) than in the unvaccinated group (3.2 (95% CI 2.06-4.96)). It aimed to determine how health insurance type and income level influence catastrophic health expenditure and unmet healthcare needs among South Koreans. Unbalanced Korean Health Panel data from 2011 to 2015, including 33,374 adults, were used. A time-trend and panel regression analysis were performed. The first to identify changes in the main variables and, the second, mediating effects of unmet healthcare needs and catastrophic health expenditure on the relationship between health insurance type, income level, and health status. The independent variables were high-, middle-, low-income employee insured, high-, middle-, low-income self-employed insured, and medical aid. The dependent variable was health status, and the mediators were unmet needs and catastrophic health expenditure. The medical aid beneficiaries and low-income self-employed insured groups demonstrated a higher probability of reporting poor health status than the high-income, insured group (15.6%, 2.2%, and 2.3%, respectively). Participants who experienced unmet healthcare needs or catastrophic health expenditure were 10.7% and 5.6% higher probability of reporting poor health, respectively (Sobel test p less then 0.001). This mini-review aims to summarize the diversity of the secondary metabolites as well as their occurrences in Clonostachys fungi and biological activities.A Multi-Constellation Software-Defined Receiver (**-SDR) is designed and implemented to extract the Doppler measurements of Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite's downlink signals, such as Orbcomm, Iridium-Next, Globalstar, Starlink, OneWeb, SpaceX, etc. The Doppler positioning methods, as one of the main localization algorithms, need a highly accurate receiver design to track the Doppler as a measurement for Extended Kalman Filter (EKF)-based positioning. In this paper, the designed receiver has been used to acquire and track the Doppler shifts of two different kinds of LEO constellations. The extracted Doppler shifts of one Iridium-Next satellite as a burst-based simplex downlink signal and two Orbcomm satellites as continuous signals are considered. Also, with having the Two-Line Element (TLE) for each satellite, the position, and orbital elements of each satellite are known. Finally, the accuracy of the designed receiver is validated using an EKF-based stationary positioning algorithm with an adaptive measurement matrix. Satellite detection and Doppler tracking results are analyzed for each satellite. Advances in the knowledge of molecular profile of these tumors, including mutations in the isocitrate dehydrogenase genes, or 1p/19q codeletion, and in neuroradiological techniques have contributed to the diagnosis, prognostic stratification, and follow-up of these tumors. Optimal post-operative management of LGG is still controversial, though radiation therapy and chemotherapy remain the optimal treatments after surgical resection in selected patients. In this review, we report the most important and recent research on clinical and molecular features, new neuroradiological techniques, the different therapeutic modalities, and new opportunities for personalized targeted therapy and supportive care.This study examined the effects of healthcare inequality on personal health. It aimed to determine how health insurance type and income level influence catastrophic health expenditure and unmet healthcare needs among South Koreans. Unbalanced Korean Health Panel data from 2011 to 2015, including 33,374 adults, were used. A time-trend and panel regression analysis were performed. The first to identify changes in the main variables and, the second, mediating effects of unmet healthcare needs and catastrophic health expenditure on the relationship between health insurance type, income level, and health status. The independent variables were high-, middle-, low-income employee insured, high-, middle-, low-income self-employed insured, and medical aid. The dependent variable was health status, and the mediators were unmet needs and catastrophic health expenditure. The medical aid beneficiaries and low-income self-employed insured groups demonstrated a higher probability of reporting poor health status than the high-income, insured group (15.6%, 2.2%, and 2.3%, respectively). Participants who experienced unmet healthcare needs or catastrophic health expenditure were 10.7% and 5.6% higher probability of reporting poor health, respectively (Sobel test p less then 0.001). This mini-review aims to summarize the diversity of the secondary metabolites as well as their occurrences in Clonostachys fungi and biological activities.A Multi-Constellation Software-Defined Receiver (MC-SDR) is designed and implemented to extract the Doppler measurements of Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite's downlink signals, such as Orbcomm, Iridium-Next, Globalstar, Starlink, OneWeb, SpaceX, etc. The Doppler positioning methods, as one of the main localization algorithms, need a highly accurate receiver design to track the Doppler as a measurement for Extended Kalman Filter (EKF)-based positioning. In this paper, the designed receiver has been used to acquire and track the Doppler shifts of two different kinds of LEO constellations. The extracted Doppler shifts of one Iridium-Next satellite as a burst-based simplex downlink signal and two Orbcomm satellites as continuous signals are considered. Also, with having the Two-Line Element (TLE) for each satellite, the position, and orbital elements of each satellite are known. Finally, the accuracy of the designed receiver is validated using an EKF-based stationary positioning algorithm with an adaptive measurement matrix. Satellite detection and Doppler tracking results are analyzed for each satellite.     The long-term survival rate of osteosarcoma, which is the most common type of primary malignant bone tumor, has stagnated in past decades. Acacetin is a natural flavonoid compound that has antioxidative and anti-inflammatory effects and exhibits extensive therapeutic effects on various cancers. In this study, the anticancer potential of acacetin and the underlying molecular mechanisms were examined in human osteosarcoma cells (SJSA and HOS).

    HOS and SJSA cell lines were exposed to different concentrations of acacetin. Cell proliferation and viability were assessed by CCK-8 and colony-formation assays. Hoechst 33258 fluorescent staining was employed to detect apoptosis. Cell apoptosis was measured by an annexin V-FITC/PI assay by flow cytometry. The alteration in the mitochondrial membrane potential was detected by a JC-1 Assay Kit. Apoptosis-related protein expression was determined by Western blotting. Intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) production was detected by fluorescence microscopy and flow/JNK signaling pathway in SJSA and HOS cells, suggesting that acacetin may be a promising candidate for the management of osteosarcomas.

However, several randomized studies have now shown no benefit or increased adverse events associated with remdesivir treatment. Drug development is a time-intensive process and requires extensive safety and efficacy evaluations. In contrast, drug repurposing is a time-saving and cost-effective drug discovery strategy geared towards using existing drugs instead of de novo drug discovery. Treatments for cancer and COVID-19 often have similar goals of controlling inflammation, inhibiting cell division, and modulating the host microenvironment to control the disease. In this review, we focus on anti-cancer drugs that can potentially be repurposed for COVID-19 and are currently being tested in clinical trials.

In order to determine the significance of CAC in cancer patients we evaluated the prognostic utility of CAC detected on oncology FDG-PET/CT studies. A retrospective study was performed of consecutive FDG-PET/CT studies from January to March 2011. CAC was identified on the CT portion of FDG/PET-CT studies. Chart review documented statin use, the Framingham risk score (FRS) (includes age, diabetes, hypertension, dyslipidemia and smoking), the primary malignancy and metastases. The primary end point was a composite of death and cardiovascular (CV) events (non-fatal myocardial infarction (MI), PCI or coronary artery bypass surgery (CABG)). 266 patients had a median follow up of 41 months (95% CI 31-56 months). CAC was noted in 140 patients. Based on CAC, potentially 84 patients would have had a change in statin prescribing (p  less then  0.01). CAC was associated with the primary end point on univariable and multivariable analysis (OR 2.6 (95% CI 1.42-4.77) (p  less then  0.01). We studied the influence of thymalin on differentiation of human hematopoietic stem cells (HSC) and expression of CD28 molecule involved in the implementation of antiviral immunity in COVID-19 infection. It was found that thymalin reduced the expression of CD44 (stem cell marker) and CD117 (molecule of the intermediate stage of HSC differentiation) by 2-3 times and increased the expression of CD28 (marker of mature T lymphocytes) by 6.8 times. Thymalin is effective in therapy of acute respiratory syndrome, chronic obstructive bronchitis, and other immunopathology. Thymalin increases functional activity of T lymphocytes, but the targeted molecular mechanism of its biological activity requires further study. We studied the influence of thymalin on differentiation of human hematopoietic stem cells (HSC) and expression of CD28 molecule involved in the implementation of antiviral immunity in COVID-19 infection. It was found that thymalin reduced the expression of CD44 (stem cell marker) and CD117 (molecule of the intermediate stage of HSC differentiation) by 2-3 times and increased the expression of CD28 (marker of mature T lymphocytes) by 6.8 times. This indirectly indicates that thymalin stimulated differentiation of CD117+ cells into mature CD28+T lymphocytes. It is known that in patients with severe COVID-19, the number of CD28+, CD4+, CD8+T lymphocytes in the blood decreased, which attested to a pronounced suppression of immunity.

Dissection of the neovaginal space can be particularly challenging, with risk of injury to the anal and urethral sphincters, urethra and rectum. Specialty-level consultation is often sought to facilitate complex and uncomfortable conversations on death and dying. Palliative care (PC) providers focus on patient and family needs through the lens of whole-person care. Sexuality is an important component of every person's identity, yet providers often avoid this topic. Avoiding conversations about sexuality is especially strong when the patient has a serious illness. PC providers are recognized communication experts, although current curricula offer little training on how to incorporate discussions regarding this important aspect of personhood. Using case discussions, we offer strategies for examining sexuality and incorporating sex-positive interventions into practice. By highlighting how sexuality and PC intersect, we hope to foster a community of interdisciplinary PC providers who practice what we have termed sex-positive palliative care.Objective To assess the efficacy and safety of closed-loop control (CLC) insulin delivery system in adolescents and young adults with type 1 diabetes. Research Design and Methods Prespecified subanalysis of outcomes in adolescents and young adults aged 14-24 years old with type 1 diabetes in a previously published 6-month multicenter randomized trial. Participants were randomly assigned 21 to CLC (Tandem Control-IQ) or sensor augmented pump (SAP, various pumps+Dexcom G6 CGM) and followed for 6 months. Results Mean age of the 63 participants was 17 years, median type 1 diabetes duration was 7 years, and mean baseline HbA1c was 8.1%. All 63 completed the trial. Time in range (TIR) increased by 13% with CLC versus decreasing by 1% with SAP (adjusted treatment group difference = +13% [+3.1 h/day]; 95% confidence interval [CI] 9-16, P 180 mg/dL (adjusted difference -12% [-2.9 h/day], P  less then  0.001). Conclusions CLC use for 6 months was substantial and associated with improved TIR and reduced hypoglycemia in adolescents and young adults with type 1 diabetes. Objectives We review the literature of transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) with neuroimaging for CUD and outline a research path forward whereby TMS can be used to identify brain network features as diagnostic or prognostic biomarkers for treatment. Methods We reviewed the literature for primary research studies of TMS with neuroimaging for CUD. We searched PubMed using search terms of "cocaine," "transcranial magnetic stimulation," and "neuroimaging." Identified studies were screened by title and abstract. Full-text studies were reviewed for inclusion. Results In our initial search, we identified 73 studies. Six studies met our inclusion criteria. These studies used rTMS (n = 3) and single or paired pulse TMS (n = 3) and included a total of 289 participants. All studies used fMRI as the neuroimaging modality. The most common outcome measure was craving and cue-reactivity (n = 3). Conclusion The literature combining TMS with neuroimaging is small and heterogeneous. We propose that combining TMS with neuroimaging will accelerate our understanding of substance use disorder neurobiology and treatment. Once network biomarkers of substance use have been identified, TMS can be used to manipulate the dysfunctional circuits in order to identify a causal relationship between connectivity and psychopathology.

  • Various safer conception methods to limit HIV transmission risks can be offered in resource-constrained settings. https://www.selleckchem.com/products/gdc-0068.html However, implementation of safer conception services remains limited in many countries, including Botswana. Understanding perceptions about safer conception methods and the benefits and challenges to use can help with the development of policies, interventions, and service delivery models. Forty-five women living with HIV in the greater Gaborone, Botswana area participated in focus group discussions. Themes were analyzed using interpretive phenomenology. Despite low knowledge of specific safer conception methods that can be used to prevent transmission of HIV when trying to achieve pregnancy, there was noted interest in pre-exposure prophylaxis and vaginal insemination. Challenges to greater uptake were noted including a lack of knowledge about a range of SC methods, limited partner support and communication, provider stigma, health systems barriers, current policies, and the cultural acceptability of methods. Interventions will need to address these challenges and be responsive to the needs and reflect the realities of WLHIV who desire pregnancy in order for safer conception uptake to become a common practice.Commercial buildings account for one third of the total electricity consumption in the United States and a significant amount of this energy is wasted. Therefore, there is a need for "virtual" energy audits, to identify energy inefficiencies and their associated savings opportunities using methods that can be non-intrusive and automated for application to large populations of buildings. Here we demonstrate virtual energy audits applied to large populations of buildings' time-series smart-meter data using a systematic approach and a fully automated Building Energy Analytics (BEA) Pipeline that unifies, cleans, stores and analyzes building energy datasets in a non-relational data warehouse for efficient insights and results. This BEA pipeline is based on a custom compute job scheduler for a high performance computing cluster to enable parallel processing of Slurm jobs. Within the analytics pipeline, we introduced a data qualification tool that enhances data quality by fixing common errors, while also detecting analysis at scale.Children and adolescents commonly suffer from sleep and circadian rhythm disturbances, which may contribute to poorer mental health and wellbeing during this critical developmental phase. Many studies however rely on self-reported sleep measures. This study assessed whether accelerometry data collection was feasible within the school setting as a method for investigating the extent of sleep and circadian disruption, and associations with subjective wellbeing, in Scotland. Fourteen days of wrist-worn accelerometry data were collected from 69 pupils, aged 10-14 years. Objective measures of sleep timing, sleep duration and circadian rest-activity patterns were derived. Questionnaires assessed subjective sleep timing, depressive symptoms, and experiences of wearing the accelerometer. Pupils slept on average less than 8 hours per night, failing to meet standard age-specific recommendations. Sleep timing was later and duration longer on weekends compared to weekdays (B = 0.87, 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.70, 1.04; B = 0.49, 95% CI 0.29, 0.69), indicating social jetlag. Lower daytime activity was correlated with higher depressive symptoms (r = -0.84, p = 0.008). Compared to primary school pupils, secondary pupils had shorter sleep window duration and lower circadian relative amplitude. Over half of participants reported some discomfort/inconvenience wearing the accelerometer. These data highlight that inadequate sleep is prevalent in this sample of schoolchildren. Future, larger scale investigations will examine in more detail the associations between sleep, circadian function and physical activity with mental health and wellbeing.One important concern around the spread of respiratory infectious diseases has been the contribution of public transportation, a space where people are in close contact with one another and with high-use surfaces. We examine the extent of the association between public transportation and influenza mortality, a proxy for disease prevalence, using city-level data on influenza and pneumonia mortality and public transit use from 121 large cities in the United States (US) between 2006 and 2015. We find no evidence of a positive relationship between city-level transit ridership and influenza/pneumonia mortality rates, suggesting that population level rates of transit use are not a singularly important factor in the transmission of influenza.

    To prospectively investigate retinal vascular changes in patients undergoing epiretinal membrane (ERM) and internal limiting membrane (ILM) peeling using swept source optical coherence tomography angiography (SSOCTA).

    Consecutive patients were grouped based on ERM severity and followed using SSOCTA up to month 3 after surgical intervention. Superficial and deep foveal avascular zone (s/dFAZ) as well as foveal and parafoveal vessel density (VD) were correlated with ERM severity and visual acuity. Differences between groups were evaluated.

    Significant correlations were found between ERM severity and baseline sFAZ, dFAZ and best corrected visual acuity (BCVA), central retinal subfield thickness (CST) and ΔCST (r = -0.52, r = -0.43, r = -0.42, r = 0.58, r = 0.39; all p<0.05). Vascular flow parameters did not correlate with age, peeling size, pseudophakia or CST, but correlated with intraretinal cysts presence. No associations of BCVA with any of the OCTA parameters across time were found. Significant difRM and ILM peeling were found. However, the clinical usefulness and prognostic value for post-surgical treatment BCVA of the SSOCTA-derived variables (sFAZ and dFAZ area, as well as foveal and parafoveal VD) used remains questionable.

  • We propose to use Twitter data as social-spatial sensors. This study deals with the question whether research papers on certain diseases are perceived by people in regions (worldwide) that are especially concerned by these diseases. Since (some) Twitter data contain location information, it is possible to spatially map the activity of Twitter users referring to certain papers (e.g., dealing with tuberculosis). The resulting maps reveal whether heavy activity on Twitter is correlated with large numbers of people having certain diseases. In this study, we focus on tuberculosis, human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), and malaria, since the World Health Organization ranks these diseases as the top three causes of death worldwide by a single infectious agent. The results of the social-spatial Twitter maps (and additionally performed regression models) reveal the usefulness of the proposed sensor approach. One receives an impression of how research papers on the diseases have been perceived by people in regions that are especially concerned by these diseases. Our study demonstrates a promising approach for using Twitter data for research evaluation purposes beyond simple counting of tweets.Diffusion MRI is extensively used to investigate changes in white matter microstructure. However, diffusion measures within white matter tissue can be affected by partial volume effects due to cerebrospinal fluid and white matter hyperintensities, especially in the aging brain. In previous aging studies, the cingulum bundle that plays a central role in the architecture of the brain networks supporting cognitive functions has been associated with cognitive deficits. However, most of these studies did not consider the partial volume effects on diffusion measures. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of free water elimination on diffusion measures of the cingulum in a group of 68 healthy elderly individuals. We first determined the effect of free water elimination on conventional DTI measures and then examined the effect of free water elimination on verbal fluency performance over 12 years. The cingulum bundle was reconstructed with a tractography pipeline including a white matter hyperintensities mask to limit the negative impact of hyperintensities on fiber tracking algorithms. We observed that free water elimination increased the ability of conventional DTI measures to detect associations between tissue diffusion measures of the cingulum and changes in verbal fluency in older individuals. Moreover, free water content and mean diffusivity measured along the cingulum were independently associated with changes in verbal fluency. This suggests that both tissue modifications and an increase in interstitial isotropic water would contribute to cognitive decline. These observations reinforce the importance of using free water elimination when studying brain aging and indicate that free water itself could be a relevant marker for age-related cingulum white matter modifications and cognitive decline.In China, large-area excavation and filling engineering has increased rapidly with the expansion of construction land. The quality of filling engineering is the most important guarantee for the stability of building structures. Among all research on fill soil, the compaction characteristics are significant for indicating the strength and stability of filling engineering. In this paper, two layers of loess fill soil were compacted by a self-manufactured test system with three different compaction energies. https://www.selleckchem.com/products/bi-9787.html Based on the variation in the soil bottom pressure obtained in the tests, the influence of the compaction parameters on the soil bottom pressure was investigated. The results show that the compaction curve can be used instead of the curve of the change in soil bottom pressure with water content; as the soil density increases, the soil bottom pressure increases to the maximum. The relation of the energy consumption ratio of the soil bottom (σ/σz) and the number of soil layers is exponential and reveals the stability of the soil skeleton formed during compaction. Frequency based analyses have been argued to be useful to identify altered postural control strategies in balance tasks. The aim of this study was to explore the frequency domain of the quiet stance centre of pressure of older adults with various degrees of fall-related concerns and sensorimotor functioning. We included 45 community dwelling older adults and used a force plate to register 30 seconds of quiet stance with eyes open and closed respectively. We also measured sensory and motor functions, as well as fall-related concerns and morale. We analysed the centre of pressure power spectrum density and extracted the frequency of 4 of its features for each participant. Orthogonal projection of latent structures-discriminant analysis revealed two groups for each quiet stance trial. Group 1 of each trial showed less sensory and motor decline, low/no fall-related concerns and higher frequencies. Group 2 showed more decline, higher fall-related concerns and lower frequencies. During the closed eyes trial, group 1 and group 2 shifted their features to higher frequencies, but only group 1 did so in any significant way. Higher fall-related concerns, sensory and motor decline, and explorative balancing strategies are highly correlated. The control system of individuals experiencing this seems to be highly dependent on vision. Higher fall-related concerns, and sensory and motor decline are also correlated with the inability to adjust to faster, more reactive balancing strategies, when vision is not available.
    Penalised regression methods are a useful atheoretical approach for both developing predictive models and selecting key indicators within an often substantially larger pool of available indicators. In comparison to traditional methods, penalised regression models improve prediction in new data by shrinking the size of coefficients and retaining those with coefficients greater than zero. However, the performance and selection of indicators depends on the specific algorithm implemented. The purpose of this study was to examine the predictive performance and feature (i.e., indicator) selection capability of common penalised logistic regression methods (LASSO, adaptive LASSO, and elastic-net), compared with traditional logistic regression and forward selection methods.

    Data were drawn from the Australian Temperament Project, a multigenerational longitudinal study established in 1983. The analytic sample consisted of 1,292 (707 women) participants. A total of 102 adolescent psychosocial and contextual indicators were available to predict young adult daily smoking.
