The aim of this study was assessment of the laparoscopic surgery after using ileus tube(trans-anal or trans-nasal)for obstructive colorectal cancer compared with non-obstructive cancer.
Between April 2010 and March 2019, 129 patients underwent laparoscopic colorectal surgery. 97 patients were non-obstructive colorectal cancer(group N)and 32 patients were obstructive colorectal cancer(group O). Differences between the groups were analyzed using the Mann- Whitney's U-test, as appropriate.
In group O, the length of hospital stay was significantly long. There were no significant differences between-group differences in the operation time, estimated blood loss, the rate of conversion to open surgery and postoperative complications.

The laparoscopic colorectal surgery is feasible in patients treated with using ileus tube for obstructive colorectal cancer.An 80-year-old woman who visited our hospital with chief complaints of decreased appetite and diarrhea. Lower gastrointestinal endoscopy showed a type 2 tumor in the rectal Ra, and biopsy revealed a well-differentiated adenocarcinoma. The patient had locally advanced rectal cancer with widespread contact with the sacrum, and preoperative radiochemotherapy (S-1 100 mg/day plus radiotherapy 50 Gy/25 Fr)was performed. After the treatment was completed, the tumor was remarkably reduced, but the surgery was strongly rejected, and therefore chemotherapy became the policy. XELOX plus bevacizumab therapy was started, but in the second course was performed, obstructive symptoms appeared, so a semi-urgent lower anterior resection and ileostomy were performed. Postoperative pathological findings showed only a small amount of tumor cells in the mucosa, suggesting that preoperative treatment was effective.A 47-year-old woman visited a neighboring hospital because of lower abdominal pain and high fever. She was diagnosed with acute pyelonephritis and administered(oral)antibiotics. However, there was no sign of improvement. She was referred to our hospital for closer examination. Computed tomography revealed an 8 cm abdominal wall abscess spreading from the prevesical space to the rectus abdominis. Incisional drainage was performed under local anesthesia. She developed rectus abdominis muscle diastasis, and a laparotomy was performed 2 months later. Intraoperative findings showed that her Meckel's diverticulum was continuous with the abdominal wall abscess. Diagnosed with Meckel's diverticulitis with abdominal wall abscess, the patient underwent surgery(excision)for these. Histopathological findings showed adenocarcinoma cells in the abscess tissue and were continuous with gastric pyloric gland-like tissue in Meckel's diverticulum. Based on these findings, the patient was diagnosed with adenocarcinoma arising from ectopic gastric mucosa in the Meckel's diverticulum. The patient received postoperative adjuvant chemotherapy for a year. The patient is currently alive and has not experienced recurrence for 2 years since surgery. It is difficult to diagnose carcinoma of Meckel's diverticulum preoperatively due to late onset of symptoms. The diagnosis is often made at the advanced stage, when the prognosis is poor. This case is rare due to the incidental finding of an abdominal abscess and the absence of recurrence 2 years after surgery.A 72-year-old woman was transferred to our hospital after being diagnosed with retroperitoneal and ovarian tumors. Abdominal computed tomography revealed a well-defined mass lesion measuring 35 mm on the dorsal side of the descending part of the duodenum that was surrounded by the head of the pancreas and inferior vena cava. In addition, a cystic mass measuring 90 mm was found in the pelvis. Hence, the patient was diagnosed synchronous retroperitoneal tumor and teratoma. Laparoscopic retroperitoneal tumor resection and right adnexectomy were performed. The pathological findings indicated that the retroperitoneal tumor was a diffuse large B-cell lymphoma and the pelvic tumor was a mature cystic teratoma of the ovary. On the basis of the computed tomography findings, we judged that the tumor had a poor tendency to infiltrate and could be peeled off and resected using laparoscopic surgery. In this rare case, the retroperitoneal tumor and mature teratocarcinoma were simultaneously resected laparoscopically.We report a rare case of hepatic fibrolamellar hepatocellular carcinoma(FLC). A 25-year-old Vietnamese male experienced loss of appetite and abdominal pain. He was referred for further examination of a 20 cm tumor in the left lobe of the liver detected in mass screening ultrasonography. He tested negative for HBs-antigen and HCV-antibody. The serum PIVKA- â…¡ level was elevated. Liver function test findings were normal. The arterial phase of contrast enhanced abdominal CT revealed a 20×30 cm tumor that was well-enhanced, except for a central scar in the left lobe of liver. Enhanced MRI showed a high intensity tumor. T2-weighted MRI showed an iso-intensity tumor with a low-intensity central fibrous scar. Upon diagnosing the patient with FLC, we performed left hepatic trisegmentectomy. Pathological findings of the surgical specimen showed eosinophilic large neoplastic cells surrounded by fibrous stroma arranged in a lamellar fashion. This confirmed the diagnosis. FLC, which occurs in noncirrhotic livers of young patients, is a distinct clinicopathological variant of hepatocellular carcinoma. Hepatectomy for FLC should be accompanied with regional lymphadenectomy because of its association with lymph node metastasis. We also reviewed cases reported in Japan.Essential thrombocythemia(ET)is a rare myeloproliferative disorder characterized by thrombocytosis and a risk of thrombotic and hemorrhagic events. Musculoskeletal (MSK) sarcoidosis presents with a variety of clinical phenotypes. Four subtypes of MSK sarcoidosis have been identified to date Lofgren syndrome, chronic sarcoid arthritis, osseous sarcoidosis, sarcoid myopathy. Each subtype has been reported with varying incidence mainly due to lack of universal classification criteria.
We performed a retrospective chart review of patients with MSK sarcoidosis at a single academic center between January 2000 and December 2014. Descriptive statistics were used to describe the proportion of patients with sarcoidosis who had the 4 MSK syndromes of interest, demographic characteristics and therapeutic agents used.
A cohort of 58 patients with MSK manifestations were identified among 1016 patients with sarcoidosis. Frequency of subtypes include Lofgren syndrome 46.6%, osseous sarcoidosis 25.9%, chronic sarcoid arthritis 24.1% and sarcoid myopathy 6.9%. https://www.selleckchem.com/products/harringtonine.html The cohort was predominantly female (43/58 patients, 74%) and Caucasian (48/58 patients, 82.8%). Mean age was 47.2years. One patient had overlap of osseous sarcoidosis and chronic sarcoid arthritis, another patient initially had Lofgren syndrome and later developed chronic sarcoid arthritis. Sarcoid myopathy patients presented with myalgia more often than muscle weakness.

Interleukin (IL)-36, including IL-36α, IL-36β, and IL-36γ in the IL-1 family, are agonists of their receptors. IL-36 expression is associated with inflammation, including lung infection in humans. However, there is no information on its role in the inflammation of different types of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).
This study focused on the sputum IL-36α, IL-36β, and IL-36γ levels in stable COPD patients and their relationship with lung function and other cytokines in different inflammatory types of COPD patients.
Sputum specimens were collected from 73 stable COPD patients and 20 age- and gender-matched healthy controls. The levels of sputum IL-36α, IL-36β, and IL-36γ and other cytokines were quantified and sputum cells were characterized. The potential relationship between the levels of sputum IL-36α, IL-36β, or IL-36γ and lung functional measures, inflammatory cells, and cytokines was analyzed.
In comparison with the healthy controls, sputum IL-36α and IL-36γ levels significantly increased in COPD (106.8pg/mL vs. 76.9pg/mL P=.001, 397.9pg/mL vs. 359.5pg/mL P=.006). The sputum IL-36α and IL-36γ levels were significantly higher in the neutrophilic and mixed granulocytic types than that in the eosinophilic and paucigranulocytic types of COPD patients. The sputum IL-36α levels were positively correlated with sputum IL-36γ levels and the numbers of sputum neutrophils, and the sputum IL-36γ levels were positively correlated with the numbers of sputum lymphocytes in COPD patients.

As part of network-specific neurodegeneration, changes in cerebellar gray matter (GM) volume and impaired cerebello-cerebral functional networks have been reported in Alzheimer disease (AD). Compared with healthy controls, a volume loss in the cerebellum has been observed in patients with continuum of AD. However, little is known about the anatomical or functional changes in patients with clinical AD but no brain amyloidosis. We aimed to identify the relationship between cerebellar volume and dementia conversion of amyloid-negative mild cognitive impairment (MCI).
This study was a retrospective cohort study of patients over the age 50 years with amyloid-negative amnestic MCI who visited the memory clinic of Asan Medical Center with no less than a 36-month follow-up period. All subjects underwent detailed neuropsychological tests, 3 T brain magnetic resonance imaging scans including three-dimensional T1 imaging, and fluorine-18[F
]-florbetaben amyloid positron emission tomography scans. A spatially unbiased atlas template of the cerebellum and brainstem was used for analyzing cerebellar GM volume.
During the 36months of follow-up, 39 of 107 (36.4%) patients converted to dementia from amnestic MCI. The converter group had more severe impairments in all visual memory tasks. In terms of volumetric analysis, reduced crus I/II volume adjusted with total intracranial volume, and age was observed in the converter group.

In the FST, fluoxetine significantly reduced immobility time and increased latency to immobility. The effects of fluoxetine were further significantly potentiated by co-administration of G115®. The ENT run through pilot was introduced in 2018 to improve early recruitment to the specialty. This study aimed to understand what makes a successful interview applicant and the experience of the run through trainees during the specialty trainee one and specialty trainee two years.
A questionnaire survey was sent to all ENT run through trainees.
Twenty-three trainees responded. Of the successful candidates, 74 per cent held additional degrees prior to application. The median core surgical interview rank was 27 (range 3-174). Trainees felt that being on the run through pilot had increased ENT trainer engagement.
The ENT run through posts are highly competitive, and holding an additional degree may improve applicant success. The pilot programme has been successful by increasing trainer engagement at this critical stage of training. These results will enable development of the pilot programme and provide valuable information for those applying to an ENT run through post.

To determine the impact of palliative care (PC) on end-of-life (EoL) care and the place of death (PoD) in children, adolescents, and young adults with life-limiting conditions.
Eight online databases (PubMed, Medline, EMBASE, Cochrane Library, CINAHL, Airiti, GARUDA Garba Rujukan Digital, and OpenGrey) from 2010 to February 5, 2020 were searched for studies investigating EoL care and the PoD for pediatric patients receiving and not receiving PC.
Of the 6,468 citations identified, 14 cohort studies and one case series were included. An evidence base of mainly adequate- and strong-quality studies shows that inpatient hospital PC, either with or without the provision of home and community PC, was found to be associated with a decrease in intensive care use and high-intensity EoL care. Conflicting evidence was found for the association between PC and hospital admissions, length of stay in hospital, resuscitation at the time of death, and the proportion of hospital and home deaths.

This study assessed and collated published prevalence estimates of tinnitus and tinnitus severity, creating a narrative synthesis of the data from publications identified from a combination of Chinese and English language databases.
A total of 23 studies were included. Tinnitus prevalence ranged from 4.3 per cent to 51.33 per cent but varied with age and gender. The highest increase in prevalence from previous decade in age occurs during the fifth and sixth decades, and the highest prevalence was in the seventh decade at 32.47 per cent. There is also evidence that tinnitus prevalence is related to certain risk factors including comorbid disorders.
The prevalence of tinnitus in mainland China in this study is consistent with global data. With increasing awareness of the prevalence of tinnitus in China, the development of epidemiological standards is a priority.

In borderline personality disorder (BPD) there is often a diffuse sense of self, emotional instability and impulsivity that can lead to medically dangerous non-suicidal self-injury, acute medical intervention and then a withdrawal of consent while the potential threat to the person's well-being remains high. Claims of lack of capacity lack veracity, and simply acting against the patient's will may be illegal. Understanding the will and preferences of patients is a step forward, but it is not always possible in time-sensitive situations. A cautious paternalism is therefore warranted both to ensure the patient's well-being while being honest as to the reasons for this, and to possibly build epistemic trust between the medical system and the patient with BPD.

The sauna, more so than the spa or exercise, poses a greater challenge to the brain under mild to severe heating due to lower blood fl nICP increased universally by 18% with all modes of heating (P less then 0.001). The maximum Tc was achieved with passive heating, and preventing hypocapnia during exercise did not improve exercise or thermal tolerance (P ≥ 0.146). Psoriasis is a chronic, inflammatory skin disease that affects 0.71% of children. Skin diseases can have a significant impact on quality of life not only for the children affected by psoriasis, but also for their parents and carers. This study aimed to achieve more insight into the quality of life (QOL) of family of paediatric patients with psoriasis, and to investigate whether disease severity scores correlate with Family Dermatology Life Quality Index (FDLQI) scores. In addition, we also observed the treatments used to treat paediatric psoriasis in daily clinical practice.
Patients with paediatric psoriasis aged 16 and under who visited our outpatient department were included. Baseline Psoriasis Area and Severity Index (PASI) and FDLQI were measured and analysed.
Of 157 patients were included in the study. Median PASI was 4.2 (IQR 2.6-6.9), and the median FDLQI was 12 (IQR 7-17). The correlation coefficient between PASI and FDLQI was 0.44 (P<0.001). Burden of care was the highest scoring item on the FDLQI, followed by emotional impact. 146 patients were treated with topical therapy with a mean improvement in PASI of 3.92. 19 patients underwent phototherapy, and 19 underwent systemic therapy.

Tackling this question is crucial to better understanding terrestrial responses to climate change as fine-root traits drive many ecosystem processes. We carried out a detailed synthesis of fine-root trait responses to experimental warming by performing a meta-analysis of 964 paired observations from 177 publications. Warming increased fine-root biomass, production, respiration and nitrogen concentration as well as decreased root carbon nitrogen ratio and nonstructural carbohydrates. Warming effects on fine-root biomass decreased with greater warming magnitude, especially in short-term experiments. Furthermore, the positive effect of warming on fine-root biomass was strongest in deeper soil horizons and in colder and drier regions. Total fine-root length, morphology, mortality, life span and turnover were unresponsive to warming. Our results highlight the significant changes in fine-root traits in response to warming as well as the importance of warming magnitude and duration in understanding fine-root responses. These changes have strong implications for global soil carbon stocks in a warmer world associated with increased root-derived carbon inputs into deeper soil horizons and increases in fine-root respiration.The interplay between top-down and bottom-up processes determines ecosystem productivity. Herbivory had strong top-down effects, reducing L. chinensis AB by 25% relative to baseline levels without cattle or ants. In contrast, soil engineering by ants facilitated weak bottom-up effects in the absence of herbivory. Five hundred seventy-five YAs from the Young Adults with Cancer in their Prime (YACPRIME) studyreported on out-of-pocket cancer costs and missed work. YA cancer survivors were compared to matched peers without cancer on key financial indices based on current age (< 35 vs. 35 + years) and time since diagnosis (< 5 vs. 5 + years). Descriptive statistics, Chi-square tests, and prevalence ratios (PR) were used to compare groups on financial variables.
Almost 60% of YA survivors spent at least $100/month on cancer-related expenses, and 49% missed at least one year of work. The visual system of vertebrates has greatly contributed to our understanding of how different molecular mechanisms shape adaptive phenotypic diversity. Extensive work on African cichlid fishes has shown how variation in opsin gene expression mediates diversification as well as convergent evolution in colour vision. This trait has received less attention in Neotropical cichlids, the sister lineage to African cichlids, but the work done so far led to the conclusion that colour vision is **** less variable in Neotropical species. However, as only few taxa have been investigated and as recent work found contradicting patterns, the diversity in meotropical cichlids might be greatly underestimated. Here, we survey patterns of opsin gene expression in 35 representative species of Neotropical cichlids, revealing **** more variation than previously known. This diversity can be attributed to two main mechanisms (i) differential expression of the blue-sensitive sws2a, the green-sensitive rh2a, and the red-sensitive lws opsin genes, and (ii) simultaneous expression of up to five opsin genes, instead of only three as commonly found, in a striking dorsoventral pattern across the retina. This intraretinal variation in opsin genes expression results in steep gradients in visual sensitivity that may represent a convergent adaptation to clear waters with broad light environments. While the normal ECG findings were related to sex, age, and endurance sports, no such observation was found for borderline or abnormal criteria. We studied its additional effect in patients with psoriasis under other therapies. Subjects were composed of 261 patients with psoriasis, all of which were treated with topical application of steroid and vitamin D mixed ointment. Other therapies were composed of apremilast and biologics. PASI 100 rate were evaluated until 12 months after the start of its therapy. PASI 100 rate was elevated from 13 patients (5.0%) to 34 patients (13.0%, P less then 0.01). Twenty-one of 63 patients (33.3%, P less then 0.01) not reaching PASI 100 reached it after excimer light therapy. The addition of excimer light therapy in each treatment showed no significant difference compared with that before addition. The visual system of vertebrates has greatly contributed to our understanding of how different molecular mechanisms shape adaptive phenotypic diversity. Extensive work on African cichlid fishes has shown how variation in opsin gene expression mediates diversification as well as convergent evolution in colour vision. This trait has received less attention in Neotropical cichlids, the sister lineage to African cichlids, but the work done so far led to the conclusion that colour vision is much less variable in Neotropical species. However, as only few taxa have been investigated and as recent work found contradicting patterns, the diversity in meotropical cichlids might be greatly underestimated. Here, we survey patterns of opsin gene expression in 35 representative species of Neotropical cichlids, revealing much more variation than previously known. This diversity can be attributed to two main mechanisms (i) differential expression of the blue-sensitive sws2a, the green-sensitive rh2a, and the red-sensitive lws opsin genes, and (ii) simultaneous expression of up to five opsin genes, instead of only three as commonly found, in a striking dorsoventral pattern across the retina. This intraretinal variation in opsin genes expression results in steep gradients in visual sensitivity that may represent a convergent adaptation to clear waters with broad light environments. We studied its additional effect in patients with psoriasis under other therapies. Subjects were composed of 261 patients with psoriasis, all of which were treated with topical application of steroid and vitamin D mixed ointment. Other therapies were composed of apremilast and biologics. PASI 100 rate were evaluated until 12 months after the start of its therapy. PASI 100 rate was elevated from 13 patients (5.0%) to 34 patients (13.0%, P less then 0.01). On 11 March 2020, the World Health Organisation (WHO) declared the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) outbreak to be a pandemic. As the mosquito season progressed, the understandable concern that mosquitoes could transmit the virus began to increase among the general public and public health organisations. We have investigated the vector competence of Culex pipiens and Aedes albopictus, the two most common species of vector mosquitoes in Europe, for severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). Due to the very unusual feeding behaviour of Ae. albopictus, we also evaluated the role of this mosquito in a potential mechanical transmission of the virus.
For the vector competence study, mosquitoes were allowedto take severalinfectious blood meals. The mosquitoes were then collected and analysed at 0, 3, 7 and 10 days post-feeding. For the mechanical transmission test, Ae. albopictus females were allowed to feed for a short time on a feeder containing infectious blood and then on a feeder containing virus-free blood. Both mosquitoes and blood were tested for viral presence.
Culex pipiens and Ae. albopictus were found not be competent vectors for SARS-CoV-2, and Ae. albopictus was unable to mechanically transmit the virus.

Microexons, exons that are ≤ 30 nucleotides, are a highly conserved and dynamically regulated set of cassette exons. They have key roles in nervous system development and function, as evidenced by recent results demonstrating the impact of microexons on behaviour and cognition. However, microexons are often overlooked due to the difficulty of detecting them using standard RNA-seq aligners.
Here, we present MicroExonator, a novel pipeline for reproducible de novo discovery and quantification of microexons. We process 289 RNA-seq datasets from eighteen mouse tissues corresponding to nine embryonic and postnatal stages, providing the most comprehensive survey of microexons available for ****. We detect 2984 microexons, 332 of which are differentially spliced throughout mouse embryonic brain development, including 29 that are not present in mouse transcript annotation databases. Unsupervised clustering of microexons based on their inclusion patterns segregates brain tissues by developmental time, and further es enabled the discovery of previously uncharacterized microexons, and our study provides a comprehensive microexon inclusion catalogue during mouse development.
Two species of deer ked (Lipoptena cervi and L. mazamae) have been identified as vectors of Bartonella bacteria in cervids in Europe and the USA. In an earlier study we showed that Japanese sika deer (Cervus nippon) harbor three Bartonella species, namely B. capreoli (lineage A) and two novel Bartonella species (lineages B and C); however, there is currently no information on the vector of Bartonella bacteria in sika deer. The homogeneity within ethnomedicinal knowledge of these rural residents was tested using the informant consensus factor (Fic). The calculation of the fidelity value (FL) and the cultural importance index (CI) were made regarding the population's dependency on plants. A total of 88 plant species from 44 families and 80 genera were identified as medicines for various complaints. Leaves were the most frequently used plant part followed by fruits, seeds, roots, bark, and flowers/buds. The largest number of taxa (15 species) were used for treatment of skin ailments (with Fic score of 0.85) followed by wounds, coughs, and digestive problems. There was a significant relationship observed between the medicinal plants used and distance (time of access) and family income. The present study will provide baseline information to be established for future research. The available information could help to discover new drugs for the pharmaceutical industry. Therefore, we investigated concentration limits of matcha and mordant and compared this new dyeing method with commercial permanent systems on the market. Completely unpigmented hair tresses were dyed with matcha powder (camelia sinensis) and iron(II)-lactate. To investigate the wash fastness and concentration limits, the differently dyed hair tresses were spectrophotometrically measured. The comparison of the damage potential for which cysteic acid is an indicator was measured by NIR. The concentration of matcha and mordant are responsible for the intensity of the color results. The higher the matcha or the mordant concentration, the darker the color results of the dyed hair tresses. Hair damage of matcha mordant dyeing is comparable with results of commercial permanent hair coloration systems. Moreover, the results of wash fastness of matcha mordant dyed hair tresses is comparable and even better by tendency to permanent colored hair tresses.Herein, a series of novel hybrid sulfaguanidine moieties, bearing 2-cyanoacrylamide 2a-d, pyridine-2-one 3-10, and 2-imino-2H-chromene-3-carboxamide 11, 12 derivatives, were synthesized, and their structure confirmed by spectral data and elemental analysis. All the synthesized compounds showed moderate to good antimicrobial activity against eight pathogens. The most promising six derivatives, 2a, 2b, 2d, 3a, 8, and 11, revealed to be best in inhibiting bacterial and fungal growth, thus showing bactericidal and fungicidal activity. These derivatives exhibited moderate to potent inhibition against DNA gyrase and DHFR enzymes, with three derivatives 2d, 3a, and 2a demonstrating inhibition of DNA gyrase, with IC50 values of 18.17-23.87 µM, and of DHFR, with IC50 values of 4.33-5.54 µM; their potency is near to that of the positive controls. A total of 88 plant species from 44 families and 80 genera were identified as medicines for various complaints. Leaves were the most frequently used plant part followed by fruits, seeds, roots, bark, and flowers/buds. The largest number of taxa (15 species) were used for treatment of skin ailments (with Fic score of 0.85) followed by wounds, coughs, and digestive problems. There was a significant relationship observed between the medicinal plants used and distance (time of access) and family income. The present study will provide baseline information to be established for future research. The available information could help to discover new drugs for the pharmaceutical industry. Therefore, we investigated concentration limits of matcha and mordant and compared this new dyeing method with commercial permanent systems on the market. Completely unpigmented hair tresses were dyed with matcha powder (camelia sinensis) and iron(II)-lactate. To investigate the wash fastness and concentration limits, the differently dyed hair tresses were spectrophotometrically measured. The comparison of the damage potential for which cysteic acid is an indicator was measured by NIR. The concentration of matcha and mordant are responsible for the intensity of the color results. The higher the matcha or the mordant concentration, the darker the color results of the dyed hair tresses. Hair damage of matcha mordant dyeing is comparable with results of commercial permanent hair coloration systems. Moreover, the results of wash fastness of matcha mordant dyed hair tresses is comparable and even better by tendency to permanent colored hair tresses.Herein, a series of novel hybrid sulfaguanidine moieties, bearing 2-cyanoacrylamide 2a-d, pyridine-2-one 3-10, and 2-imino-2H-chromene-3-carboxamide 11, 12 derivatives, were synthesized, and their structure confirmed by spectral data and elemental analysis. All the synthesized compounds showed moderate to good antimicrobial activity against eight pathogens. SPR studies revealed that all the tested polysaccharides bind to FGF-2 (with exception of CS-8, CS-12 and CS-13) according to a model in which the CSs first form a weak complex with the protein, which is followed by maturation to tight binding with kD ranging affinities from ~ 1.31 μM to 130 μM for the first step and from ~ 3.88 μM to 1.8 nM for the second one. AA-treated ovaries had significant loss of PMFs, and significant increase in absolute numbers of growing follicles compared with untreated control ovaries. The number of growing follicles was inversely correlated with time from chemotherapy. Representative staining for FOXO3A observed decreased nuclear localization in PMF oocytes in AA-treated ovaries removed within the ultrashort time interval compared with untreated ovaries. Neither significant loss of PMFs, increase in growing follicles, nor decrease in nuclear FOXO3A were observed in non-AA-treated ovaries. No increased expression of cleaved caspase-3 was seen in PMFs within the ultrashort time interval after AA or non-AA chemotherapy. Significant stromal fibrosis and neovascularization were observed in AA-treated ovaries only after follicle loss had already occurred (4-6 months).

Primary spinal cord tumors are rare, particularly in the adult population, and national guidelines remain ambiguous with regard to management approaches. To address this knowledge gap, we evaluated management, outcomes, and prognostic factors of these neoplasms.
The National Cancer Database was queried (2004-2016) for newly-diagnosed, histologically-confirmed WHO grades I-III astrocytomas and glioblastoma. Statistics included Kaplan-Meier overall survival (OS) analysis, along with Cox proportional hazards modeling.
Of 1,033 subjects, 196 (19%) were pilocytic astrocytomas (PAs), 539 (52%) were grade II/III astrocytomas, and 298 (29%) were glioblastomas (GBMs). Respectively, 11%, 30%, and 27% did not undergo resection (biopsy only). RT was delivered to 27%, 54%, and 73%; chemotherapy was given to 5%, 21%, and 37%, respectively. The median OS was not reached for PAs, but was 101.2months for grade II/III astrocytomas, and 23.9months for GBMs (p<0.001). Neither chemotherapy nor RT (or dose thereof) was asa can be used to guide patient counseling and therapeutic approaches.
Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic inflammatory and neurodegenerative disease. Vitamin D has a major role in preventing inflammatory disorders. Therefore, any alteration in vitamin D receptor (VDR) might be a genetic risk factor for MS development. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of serum levels and VDR FokI, BsmI, and TaqI gene polymorphisms on the severity of MS.
This case-control study recruited 160 MS patients (71.9% females, mean age of 34.3±8.3years) and 162 (66.7% females, mean age 35.4±7.9year) age, sex, and ethnicity matched healthy controls. FokI (rs2228570), BsmI (rs1544410), and TaqI (rs731236) polymorphisms were carried out using polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP) method. Demographic, clinical parameters, and the levels of vitamin D were compared between groups.
We found that the frequency of FokI and TaqI polymorphisms significantly differed between the patients and the controls (p=0.0127 and p=0.0236, respectively). The MS patients had low levels of vitamin D compared to the controls (p=0.011). In addition, TaqI T/C polymorphism significantly decreased the levels of vitamin D in the MS patients (p=0.002). However, there was no significant association between FokI or BsmI SNPs and the levels of vitamin D in MS patients (p>0.5).
Our results suggest that FokI and TaqI polymorphisms of VDR are associated with MS risk and TaqI polymorphism is associated with Vitamin D levels in MS patients. Meanwhile, no difference was observed between VDR gene polymorphisms and any types of MS.

Primary spinal cord tumors are rare, particularly in the adult population, and national guidelines remain ambiguous with regard to management approaches. To address this knowledge gap, we evaluated management, outcomes, and prognostic factors of these neoplasms. The National Cancer Database was queried (2004-2016) for newly-diagnosed, histologically-confirmed WHO grades I-III astrocytomas and glioblastoma. Statistics included Kaplan-Meier overall survival (OS) analysis, along with Cox proportional hazards modeling. Of 1,033 subjects, 196 (19%) were pilocytic astrocytomas (PAs), 539 (52%) were grade II/III astrocytomas, and 298 (29%) were glioblastomas (GBMs). Respectively, 11%, 30%, and 27% did not undergo resection (biopsy only). RT was delivered to 27%, 54%, and 73%; chemotherapy was given to 5%, 21%, and 37%, respectively. Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic inflammatory and neurodegenerative disease. Vitamin D has a major role in preventing inflammatory disorders. Therefore, any alteration in vitamin D receptor (VDR) might be a genetic risk factor for MS development. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of serum levels and VDR FokI, BsmI, and TaqI gene polymorphisms on the severity of MS. This case-control study recruited 160 MS patients (71.9% females, mean age of 34.3±8.3years) and 162 (66.7% females, mean age 35.4±7.9year) age, sex, and ethnicity matched healthy controls. FokI (rs2228570), BsmI (rs1544410), and TaqI (rs731236) polymorphisms were carried out using polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP) method. Demographic, clinical parameters, and the levels of vitamin D were compared between groups. We found that the frequency of FokI and TaqI polymorphisms significantly differed between the patients and the controls (p=0.0127 and p=0.0236, respectively). The MS patients had low levels of vitamin D compared to the controls (p=0.011). In addition, TaqI T/C polymorphism significantly decreased the levels of vitamin D in the MS patients (p=0.002). However, there was no significant association between FokI or BsmI SNPs and the levels of vitamin D in MS patients (p>0.5). Our results suggest that FokI and TaqI polymorphisms of VDR are associated with MS risk and TaqI polymorphism is associated with Vitamin D levels in MS patients. Meanwhile, no difference was observed between VDR gene polymorphisms and any types of MS. Our results suggest that FokI and TaqI polymorphisms of VDR are associated with MS risk and TaqI polymorphism is associated with Vitamin D levels in MS patients.
