Nutrition and management have enabling and supporting roles to play in the health, welfare, and performance of equines. Poor or inappropriate nutrition may therefore impose limits on an animal's ability to perform and adversely affect health and welfare. Understanding the gastrointestinal tract from a nutrition perspective can help to reduce the risk of certain clinical problems. This article outlines key factors with respect to the equine digestive tract and discusses relevant aspects of ration formation. The PfAG5 gene was functionally characterised in Arabidopsis thaliana L. Overexpression of the PfAG5 gene in Arabidopsis resulted in early flowering, abnormal flowers (e.g. small petals), short plants and reduced seed set, compared with the wild type. The expression of the PfAG5 gene was high in leaves and flowers, but low in pods in transgenic Arabidopsis. The PfAG5 gene was expressed earlier and higher in the resistant (R) than the susceptible (S) P. fugax plants. Furthermore, one protein (FRIGIDA-like) with relevance to flowering time regulation and interacts with PfAG5 in resistant (R) P. fugax was identified by the yeast two-hybrid and pull-down assays. Using DMSO was more likely to result in recovery of sperm motility, vitality and acrosome integrity than glycerol, regardless of concentration, with forward progressive motility being most sensitive to damage. The lowest concentrations of 1.4 and 2.1M provided the best protection regardless of cryoprotectant type. Spermatozoa cryopreserved in 2.1M DMSO outperformed spermatozoa cryopreserved in equivalent concentrations of glycerol in terms of their ability to fertilise ova, resulting in higher rates of embryos hatching and several individuals reaching sexual maturity. In this study, we investigated whether clonal plants can remember past environments. Parental ramets of Glechoma longituba (Nakai) Kuprian were exposed to UV-B stress treatments either once or repeatedly (20 and 40 repetitions). Differences in DNA methylation levels and growth parameters among parents, offspring ramets and genets were analysed. Our results showed that UV-B stress reduced the DNA methylation level of parental ramets, and the reduction was enhanced by increasing the number of UV-B treatments. The epigenetic variation exhibited by recurrently stressed parents was maintained for a long time, but that of singly stressed parents was only short-term. Moreover, clonal plants responded to different UV-B stress treatments with different growth strategies. The one-time stress was a eustress that increased genet biomass by increasing offspring leaf allocation and defensive allocation in comparison to the older offspring. In contrast, recurring stress was a distress that reduced genet biomass, increased the biomass of storage stolons, and allocated more defensive substances to the younger ramets. This study demonstrated that the growth of offspring and genets was clearly affected by parental experience, and parental epigenetic memory and the transgenerational effect may play important roles in this effect.Late embryogenesis abundant (LEA) proteins are involved in diverse abiotic stresses tolerance in many different organisms. Our previous studies have shown that the heterologous expression of OsLEA1a interfered with the resistance of Escherichia coli to abiotic stresses. However, in the present study, based on growth status and physiological indices of rice plant, the overexpression of OsLEA1a in rice conferred increased resistance to abiotic stresses compared with the wild-type (WT) plants. Before applying abiotic stresses, there were no significant differences in physiological indices of rice seedlings. After NaCl, sorbitol, CuSO4 and H2O2 stresses, the transgenic lines had lower relative electrical conductivity, malondialdehyde and lipid peroxidation, greater the contents of proline, soluble sugar and glutathione, and higher the activities of superoxide dismutase, catalase and peroxidase than the WT plants. The results indicate that the OsLEA1a gene is involved in the protective response of plants to various abiotic stresses by inhibiting cell membrane damage and enhancing reactive oxygen species scavenging capacity. It was speculated that post-translational modification causes OsLEA1a functional differences in E. coli and rice. The present study shows that OsLEA1a could be a useful candidate gene for engineering abiotic stress tolerance in cultivated plants.

Thyroid storm is a well-known complication of surgical procedures in the lower neck, but is rare after a blunt neck trauma. The cases described previously have mainly focussed on adults with pre-existent thyroid disease. In this case report, we describe the disease course of a previously healthy adolescent who had asymptomatic hyperthyroxinemia after a blunt trauma of the jaw and neck.
. A 17-year-old girl presented at our emergency department after she fell on her head while roller blading. On physical examination, among other injuries, she had a swelling in the lower neck, which appeared to involve the thyroid gland. Subsequent laboratory analysis was indicative of primary hyperthyroxinemia, with a free T4 of 59 pmol/L (reference range 12-22) and a TSH of 0.46 mU/L (reference range 0.5-4.3), but the patient had no symptoms fitting with this. Four weeks after the initial presentation, the patient reported only complaints regarding tenderness in the jaw and neck region. She was no longer hyperthyroidic on biochemical evaluation (with a free T4 level of 15.6 pmol/L and a TSH level of 0.33 mU/L), and antibodies against thyroid peroxidase or TSH receptor were not present.
This case might indicate that hyperthyroxinemia following a neck trauma may go unnoticed if hyperthyroid symptoms are mild or absent and thyroid function tests are not performed.

Cytokine storm or direct viral invasion of the vascular endothelial cells through surface angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 receptors may result in endothelial dysfunction which can potentially result in dissection. Only a few case reports have been published in the literature describing vascular dissection without any inciting factors in COVID-19 patients. Herein, we present the first case report of bilateral renal artery dissection in a 41-year-old male patient who recently recovered from COVID-19 and was managed successfully in stages after many medical hurdles.Adult intensivists have increasing exposure to individuals with congenital diseases surviving into adulthood. Solid knowledge bases and early recognition of the possible sequelae of congenital disorders are crucial in caring for these patients. We present a challenging case of shock and relapse of Diamond-Blackfan anemia in a 42-year-old man lost to follow-up for 18 years and highlighted the importance of healthcare transitions into adulthood and the challenges faced by health care systems to develop new strategies successfully transitioning complex pediatric patients to adult care.Arterial vascular calcification (VC) represents formation of calcium phosphate deposits on the interior of arteries, which could restrict blood flow leading to heart health problems, including morbidity and mortality. VC is a complex and tightly regulated process that involves transformation of vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs) to bone-like cells and subsequent deposition of calcium as hydroxyapatite. Natural bioactives, including quercetin (Q), curcumin (C), resveratrol (R), and magnesium (Mg), have been reported to inhibit VC. Thus, we conducted an in vitro study using rat vascular smooth muscle cells (rVSMCs) to evaluate the protective effect of natural bioactives found in OptiCel, that is, Mg combined with polyphenols (PPs), Q, C, and R. Calcification was induced by culturing rVSMCs in a high phosphate (HP) medium. The addition of Mg and Q + C + R separately decreased the HP-induced calcium deposition by 37.55% and 42.78%, respectively. In contrast, when Mg was combined with Q, C, and R, the inhibition of calcium deposition was decreased by 92.88%, which is greater than their calculated additive inhibition (80.33%). These results demonstrate that the combination of Mg with selected PPs (Q, C, and R) is more effective than when used separately. The findings also suggest the combination has a synergistic effect in inhibiting VC, which is a risk factor for cardiovascular disease. Thus, regular consumption of these natural bioactives could have a beneficial effect in reducing the development of heart diseases.
Anaemia, a common nutritional deficiency, is a public health problem in the Mount Cameroon area. This study determined the prevalence and possible risk factors of microcytic and malarial anaemia in children less than ≤15 years residing in the Buea and Limbe municipalities in the Mount Cameroon area.
A total of 566 children were clinically examined in a cross-sectional study from December 2018 to August 2019 for anaemia and malaria parasites. Blood samples collected were used in evaluating full blood count with the aid of an automated haemoanalyser, and malaria parasite was confirmed by microscopy. Anaemia was defined based on WHO standards while microcytic anaemia and malarial anaemia were defined as microcytosis + anaemia and malaria + anaemia, respectively. Factors that showed significance in the bivariate analysis were entered into a multinomial logistic regression to determine risk factors for microcytic and malarial anaemia.
The overall prevalence for anaemia, microcytosis, microcytic anaemia, and malarial anaemia was, respectively, 68.

Nutritional management in the dry period can alter body condition score (BCS) in dairy cows, a subjective measure of body fat. As such, differences in BCS during late-pregnancy not only mirror nutrient utilization by fat depots, but also can play important roles on the metabolic and hormonal environment. We investigated the association between *** BCS during late-pregnancy on developmental parameters and blood variables of neonatal calves. Forty-nine multiparous Holstein cows were retrospectively divided by prepartal BCS into normal BCS ≤3.25 (NormBCS; 3.02±0.17, n = 30) or high BCS ≥3.75 (HighBCS; 3.83±0.15, n = 19) groups. Plasma samples were collected from cows at - 10 d relative to parturition. Body weight, hip and wither height, hip width and body length were measured at birth and weekly through weaning (42 d of age) and until 9 weeks of age. Calf blood samples were collected from the jugular vein at birth (before receiving colostrum, 0 d), 24 h after first colostrum and at 7, 21, 42 and 50 d of age. T development and postnatal growth. Clean rooms of the Space Assembly Facility (SAF) at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) at NASA are the final step of spacecraft cleaning and assembly before launching into space. Clean rooms have stringent methods of air-filtration and cleaning to minimize microbial contamination for exoplanetary research and minimize the risk of human pathogens, but they are not sterile. Clean rooms make a selective environment for microorganisms that tolerate such cleaning methods. Previous studies have attempted to characterize the microbial cargo through sequencing and culture-dependent protocols. However, there is not a standardized metagenomic workflow nor analysis pipeline for spaceflight hardware cleanroom samples to identify microbial contamination. Additionally, current identification methods fail to characterize and profile the risk of low-abundance microorganisms.

Acute severe ulcerative colitis (ASUC) is a complication of ulcerative colitis associated with high levels of circulating tumor necrosis factor alpha, due to the intense inflammation and faster stool clearance of anti-tumor necrosis factor drugs. Dose-intensified infliximab treatment can be beneficial and is associated with lower rates of colectomy. The aim of the study was to present a case of a patient with ASUC and megacolon, treated with hydrocortisone and accelerated scheme of infliximab that was monitored by drug trough level.
A 22-year-old female patient diagnosed with ulcerative colitis, presented with diarrhea, rectal bleeding, abdominal pain, vomiting, and distended abdomen. During investigation, a positive toxin for

She was treated with oral vancomycin for pseudomembranous colitis and intravenous hydrocortisone for severe colitis, which led to the resolution of megacolon. Due to the persistent severe colitis symptoms, infliximab 5 mg/kg was prescribed, monitored by drug trough level (8.8 μg/mL) and fecal calprotectin of 921 μg/g (< 30 μg/g). Based on the low infliximab trough level after one week from the first infliximab dose, the patient received a second infusion at week 1, consistent with the accelerated regimen (infusions at weeks 0, 1, 2 and 6). We achieved a positive clinical and endoscopic response after 6 mo of therapy, without the need for a colectomy.
Infliximab accelerated infusions can be beneficial in ASUC unresponsive to the treatment with intravenous corticosteroids. Longitudinal studies are necessary to define the best therapeutic drug monitoring and treatment regimen for these patients.

The mean age of the participants was 42.11 years, with 88.6% being females. More than a third (37.1%) of healthcare providers did not know whether or not modern contraceptives make users promiscuous, while more than half (57%) had negative attitudes towards adolescents exploring contraceptive methods. Healthcare providers viewed health systems challenges, such as poor working conditions, long queues, and contraceptives stock-outs, as deterrents towards the provision of quality sexual behaviour counselling and modern contraceptive education to users.

There is an urgent need for standardized guidelines for ADIH in children.BACKGROUND Our kidney transplant waitlist includes 20% re-transplantations (TX2). Knowing what to expect is a clinical obligation. MATERIAL AND METHODS We compared graft and patient survival of all 162 TX2 patients, transplanted 2000 to 2009, with 162 patients after first transplantation (TX1) matched for age, sex, living/non-living donation, and transplantation date. Patient follow-up was 10 years. RESULTS TX2 graft and patient survivals were inferior to TX1 (p less then 0.001 and p=0.047). TX2 patients had a longer cumulative dialysis vintage, more human leucocyte antigen (HLA) mismatches, more panel-reactive HLA antibodies, more often received induction therapy with rabbit-antithymocyte globulin (rATG), and had a lower body mass index (all p less then 0.05). Death from infection and graft failure by rejection was more frequent after TX2 (both p less then 0.05) but not after TX1. Multivariable Cox regression analysis revealed that both cohorts had graft failure and death risk associated with infection and cardiovascular disease, and graft failure by humoral rejection. However, only TX2 patients had an additional risk of graft failure with early inferior graft function and of patient death with ≥2 comorbidities. Moreover, Kaplan-Meier analysis showed that TX2 and not TX1 patients had a lower graft and patient survival associated with infection and with ≥2 comorbidities (all p less then 0.05). CONCLUSIONS Re-transplantation is associated with worse graft outcomes mainly because of immunologic and graft-quality reasons, although the high number of comorbidities and infection severities aside from cardiovascular disease drive mortality. The more frequent rATG induction of TX2 patients could promote infection by enhancing immunosuppression. By addressing comorbidities, outcomes could possibly be improved.
It is unclear if national investments of the HITECH Act have resulted in significant improvements in care processes and outcomes by making "Meaningful Use (MU)" of Electronic Health Record (EHR) systems. After adjusting for confounding factors, EHRs that attested to MU had a positive impact on IQI 90 and IQI 91 composite scores with an 8% decrease in composites for mortality for selected procedures and 18% decrease in composites for mortality for selected conditions. Quality measurement across healthcare is undertaken with a goal of improving care and outcomes for patients; however, the relationship between quality measurement and patient outcomes remains largely untested, particularly in inpatient behavioral health. Using a retrospective quantitative design, we assessed 142 behavioral health organizations' quality data submitted to the Hospital-Based Inpatient Psychiatric Services and Inpatient Psychiatric Facility Quality Reporting programs from 2017 to 2018 and tested relationships between compliance on 16 quality measures and symptom improvement on patient self-report outcomes (SROs) at the facility level. Performance on many quality measures was negatively skewed (at least four have almost no room for improvement on average), and there was high interrelatedness between most quality measures. Nine of the assessed measures correlated with patient SROs but not in clear groupings. Findings indicate that an underlying organizational construct may be driving compliance rres was negatively skewed (at least four have almost no room for improvement on average), and there was high interrelatedness between most quality measures. A literature search was performed for articles published in 'Pubmed (includes Medline indexed journals)' electronic databases for broad key words 'Clubfoot or CTEV or congenital talipes equinovarus', 'orthosis or brace or splint'. Included were studies that addressed the treatment of idiopathic clubfoot in children up to 2 years of age using the Ponseti technique and use of unilateral limb orthosis for the subsequent maintenance phase. We excluded studies reporting Ponseti technique for nonidiopathic clubfoot, child age older than 2 years at the time of primary treatment, studies where unilateral limb orthosis was used as a tool for primary correction of all or some components of clubfoot and design descriptions of orthosis without practical usage data.

To lower the introduction and maintenance costs of autonomous power supplies for driving Internet-of-things (IoT) devices, we have developed low-cost Fe-Al-Si-based thermoelectric (FAST) materials and power generation modules. Our development approach combines computational science, experiments, mapping measurements, and machine learning (ML). FAST materials have a good balance of mechanical properties and excellent chemical stability, superior to that of conventional Bi-Te-based materials. However, it remains challenging to enhance the power factor (PF) and lower the thermal conductivity of FAST materials to develop reliable power generation devices. This forum paper describes the current status of materials development based on experiments and ML with limited data, together with power generation module fabrication related to FAST materials with a view to commercialization. Combining bulk combinatorial methods with diffusion couple and mapping measurements could accelerate the search to enhance PF for FAST materials. We report that ML prediction is a powerful tool for finding unexpected off-stoichiometric compositions of the Fe-Al-Si system and dopant concentrations of a fourth element to enhance the PF, i.e., Co substitution for Fe atoms in FAST materials.Alzheimer's disease (AD) is characterized by the presence of extracellular senile plaques formed by β-amyloid (Aβ) peptides in the patient's brain. Previous studies have shown that the plaques in the AD brains are colocalized with the advanced glycation end products, which is mainly formed from a series of nonenzymatic reactions of proteins with reducing sugars or reactive dicarbonyls. Glycation was also demonstrated to increase the neurotoxicity of the Aβ peptides. To clarify the impact of glycation on Aβ aggregation, we synthesized two glycated Aβ42 peptides by replacing Lys16 and Lys28 with Nε-carboxymethyllysine respectively to mimic the occurrence of protein glycation. Afterward, we monitored the aggregation kinetics and conformational change for two glycated peptides. We also used fluorescence correlation spectroscopy to probe the early stage of peptide oligomerization and tested their abilities in copper binding and reactive oxygen species production. Our data show that glycation significantly slows down the aggregation process and induces more cytotoxicity especially at position 28. We speculated that the higher toxicity might result from a relatively stable oligomeric form of peptide and not from ROS production. For nuclear salts, the range of possible local structures, compositions, and thermodynamic conditions presents significant challenges in atomistic modeling. In this work, we demonstrate that atom-centered neural network interatomic potentials (NNIPs) provide a fast method for performing molecular dynamics of molten salts that is as accurate as ab initio molecular dynamics. For LiF, these potentials are able to accurately reproduce ab initio interactions of dimers, crystalline solids under deformation, crystalline LiF near the melting point, and liquid LiF at high temperatures. For Flibe, NNIPs accurately predict the structures and dynamics at normal operating conditions, high-temperature-pressure conditions, and in the crystalline solid phase. Furthermore, we show that NNIP-based molecular dynamics of molten salts are scalable to reach long time scales (e.g., nanosecond) and large system sizes (e.g., 105 atoms) while maintaining ab initio density functional theory accuracy and providing more than 3 orders of magnitude of computational speedup for calculating structure and transport properties.Thermally resistant air-stable organic triradicals with a quartet ground state and a large energy gap between spin states are still unique compounds. In this work, a fast, portable, and label-free Ag+ detection sensor based on a Ti3C2Tx MXene field-effect transistor (FET) is reported. The Ti3C2Tx MXene works as the sensing element in the FET sensor, which shows excellent sensing performance, i.e., fast response (few seconds) and good sensitivity and selectivity to Ag+ without any detection label or probe. Utilizing the visual photograph, transmission electron microscopy image, and Ag elemental mapping analysis, the sensing mechanism of the label-free Ti3C2Tx MXene FET sensor is demonstrated to be the in situ reduction of Ag+ and the formation of Ag nanoparticles (AgNPs). Moreover, Ag+ detection in real samples shows that the proposed FET devices have satisfactory sensing capability for Ag+ in tap water and river water.

The development of COVID-19 vaccines has progressed with encouraging safety and efficacy data. Concerns have been raised about SARS-CoV-2 vaccine responses in the large population of patients with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). The study aimed to explore the safety and immunogenicity of COVID-19 vaccination in NAFLD.
This multicenter study included patients with NAFLD without a history of SARS-CoV-2 infection. All patients were vaccinated with 2 doses of inactivated vaccine against SARS-CoV-2. However, the underlying mechanisms for AVP regulation of these central processes still remain largely unknown. In this review, we will provide a brief overview of the current knowledge concerning how AVP controls energy balance and feeding behavior, focusing on physiological aspects including the relationship between AVP, circadian rhythmicity, and glucocorticoids.
A central goal of systems neuroscience is to understand the relationships amongst constituent units in neural populations, and their modulation by external factors, using high-dimensional and stochastic neural recordings. Parametric statistical models (e.g., coupling, encoding, and decoding models), play an instrumental role in accomplishing this goal. However, extracting conclusions from a parametric model requires that it is fit using an inference algorithm capable of selecting the correct parameters and properly estimating their values. Traditional approaches to parameter inference have been shown to suffer from failures in both selection and estimation. The recent development of algorithms that ameliorate these deficiencies raises the question of whether past work relying on such inference procedures have produced inaccurate systems neuroscience models, thereby impairing their interpretation.

We fit functional coupling, encoding, and decoding models across a battery of neural datasets using both UoI and baseline inference procedures (e.g., ℓ

Across recording modality, brain region, and task, we found that UoI inferred models with increased sparsity, improved stability, and qualitatively different parameter distributions, while maintaining predictive performance. We obtained highly sparse functional coupling networks with substantially different community structure, more parsimonious encoding models, and decoding models that relied on fewer single-units.

The exploration of epigenetic regulation of these genes as a biological mechanism has been important to our understanding of how animals adapt to their environments and how these developmental trajectories may be altered. However, other non-maternal factors have been shown to act directly, or to interact with maternal care, to influence later-life phenotype. Based on accumulating evidence, including our research, we discuss other important influences on the developmental programming of offspring. We highlight early-life variations in temperature exposure and offspring genotype x environment interactions as prominent examples. We conclude with recommendations for future investigations on how early-life maternal care and extra-maternal influences lead to persistent changes in the brain and behavior of the offspring throughout development.

To explore different neurological manifestations with suspicion of being associated to serum glutamate decarboxylase antibodies (GAD-Abs) in order to better characterize anti-GAD neurological syndromes.
Observational retrospective study including all patients for whom GAD65-Abs titers in serum were requested by the Neurology Department at La Paz University Hospital between 2015 and 2019. GAD-Abs were measured by ELISA. Demographic data, neurological symptoms, comorbidity with diabetes mellitus (DM) or with another autoimmune disease, and GAD-Abs titers were studied. Stiff-person syndrome, ataxia, encephalitis, and epilepsy were considered typical anti-GAD neurological syndromes and were compared to other atypical manifestations.
A total of 173 patients (51.7% men, mean age 51.62) were included. A progressive increase in requests of serum GAD-Abs has occurred over the last 5 years, especially in patients with atypical neurological manifestations. GAD-Abs were found in the serum of 22 patients (12.7%); ofe diseases, and high serum GAD-Abs levels are usually present.The non-target toxicity and resistance problems of acetylcholinesterase (AChE) insecticides, such as organophosphates and carbamates, are of growing concern. To explore the potential targets for achieving inhibitor selectivity, the AChE structures at or near the catalytic pocket of Tetranychus urticae (TuAChE), honey bees, and humans were compared. The entrances to the AChE catalytic pocket differ significantly because of their different peripheral sites. The role of these potential mite-specific sites in AChE function was further elucidated by site-directed mutagenesis of these sites and then examining the catalytic activities of TuAChE mutants. The spider mite E316, H369, and V105 active sites are important for AChE function. By further analyzing their physostigmine inhibitory properties and the detailed interaction between physostigmine and TuAChE, the peripheral site H369 locating near the gorge entrance, and S154 at the oxyanion hole, affects substrate and inhibitor trafficking. The discovery of conserved mite-specific residues in Tetranychus will enable the development of safer, effective pesticides that target residues present only in mite AChEs, potentially offering effective control against this important agricultural pest.Diabetes mellitus impairs angiogenesis and tissue reorganization during orthodontic tooth movement (OTM). Thus, this study evaluated pulpal outcomes in orthodontic tooth movement through metabolic changes in diabetes. Male Wistar rats were used, and the in vivo study design consisted of four groups (n = 10/group) C-non-diabetic animals not subjected to orthodontic tooth movement; D-diabetic animals not subjected to orthodontic tooth movement; OTM-non-diabetic animals subjected to orthodontic tooth movement; and D + OTM-diabetic animals subjected to orthodontic tooth movement. In addition, the pulps of the distovestibular root (DV) and mesiovestibular root (MV) were assessed by histomorphometric analyses and immunoexpression of the RANKL/OPG system. Pulpal analysis of the MV root showed an increase in blood vessels in diabetic animals. Inflammatory infiltrate and fibroblastic cells were elevated in diabetic animals with tooth movement in the DV and MV roots. In the DV and MV roots, diabetic rats with OTM showed a reduction in birefringent collagen fibers. The immunostaining for RANKL was higher in the pulp tissue of OTM in diabetic and non-diabetic animals. We seek to establish whether high-density lipoprotein HDL metabolism and reverse cholesterol transport (RCT) impairment is an intrinsic feature of familial hypercholesterolemia (FH).
RCT from macrophages (m-RCT), a vascular cell type of major influence on atherosclerosis, is impaired in FH due to defective low-density lipoprotein receptor (LDLR) function via both the HDL- and LDL-mediated pathways. Potential mechanisms include impaired HDL metabolism, which is linked to increased LDL levels, as well as the increased transport of cellular unesterified cholesterol to LDL, which presents a defective catabolism. RCT dysfunction is consistently associated with mutation-positive FH linked to decreased HDL levels as well as impaired HDL remodeling and LDLR function. It remains to be explored whether these alterations are also present in less well-characterized forms of FH, such as cases with no identified mutations, and whether they are fully corrected by current standard treatments.
