The structural studies in the solid phase and in solutions showed that diazadiphosphacyclooctane ligands of all complexes adopted chair-boat conformations so that their nitrogen atoms were in close proximity to the central iron ion. The redox properties of the obtained complexes were performed by the cyclic voltammetry method.The effects of different precursor salts, stabilizing agents, and heat treatment parameters are already known to have an influence on the synthesis of nano-sized semiconductors in heterogenous photocatalysis. In the present work, CuxS materials were prepared by using different precursors (copper (II) chloride dihydrate or copper (II) acetate monohydrate) and shape tailoring/stabilizing agents, such as ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid/polyvinylpyrrolidone, and thiourea as the sulfur source. The polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) kinetically controlled the growth rate of the nanoplates, while ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) adjusted the nucleation process through the complexation of copper. A one-step hydrothermal method was used for the synthesis, and the materials were characterized by means of morphological and structural complementary investigation methods. Furthermore, the adsorption capacity and photocatalytic activity were also measured for these materials. It was found that the vacancy sites formed by changing the precursor salt, as confirmed by Raman measurements, affect the photocatalytic activity. The weld quality, in terms of the microstructure and mechanical properties, was investigated after stress relief annealing (SRA) at 750 °C for 2 h and compared with the as-welded (AWed) results. The central weld zone (CWZ) microstructure in the AWed condition consisted of recrystallized prior-β grains with α' martensite, which transformed into an acicular α+β structure after SRA. The hardness in the AWed condition was highest in the CWZ and decreased sharply through the thermomechanically affected zones (TMAZ) to the parent materials (PMs). After SRA, the hardness of the CWZ decreased, mainly due to tempering of the α' martensite microstructure. Static tensile testing of the dissimilar welds in both the AWed and stress relief annealed (SRAed) conditions resulted in ductile fracture occurring exclusively in the Ti-6Al-4V side of the joint. The promising results on joining of Ti-64 to Ti-6242 provide valuable insight for tailoring performance of next-generation aero-engine products.

This process can be anxiety-provoking, especially when new literature appears to threaten the originality of the study. AIM To reintroduce 'concurrent analysis' (CA) - a method of synthesising relevant literature with primary data. DISCUSSION CA treats all data as primary data. To illustrate the technique, the authors synthesise relevant literature with findings from a doctoral study of patients' experiences of vascular access devices. CONCLUSION CA raised new questions that would otherwise have remained unasked. For example, it revealed cultural differences in the way patients react to suboptimal treatment. IMPLICATIONS for practice Nurse researchers are best placed to influence policy and practice when they can articulate the transferability of their findings. The introduction of modern biotechnology has allowed clinicians to greatly expand therapeutic armamentarium, while having a number of advantages, including minimal frequency of complications and adverse events, the possibility for long-term use, accessibility, and etc. Priority research areas include the study of toll-like receptors, which are transmembrane proteins that provide pathogen recognition and activate the immune response. The role of these receptors in the development of the immune response to urinary tract infections was evaluated in our study, which allows to predict the course of the disease and to increase treatment efficiency.The active development of minimally invasive procedures on retroperitoneal organs using endoscopic technology raises the question of the most rational approach. The studies dedicated to the comparison of transperitoneal and retroperitoneoscopic approach are analyzed in the article. The advantages and the most common complications, as well as the factors limiting the widespread use of retroperitoneoscopic approach, are reviewed.Percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL) is the method of choice for large and staghorn renal stones, including those in patients with solitary kidney. The aim of the literature review was to analyze the results of PCNL in patients with large stones in the solitary kidney. The literature search was conducted in databases Embase, Medline, Google Scholar, Scopus for the period from 2010 to 2019. A total 94 articles were selected, of which 16 papers were included in the review after analyzing the abstracts. Data was pooled and analyzed using SPSS Statistics 22.0. The primary stone-free rate for PCNL in these patients was 68.3+/-14.2%, and the final stone-free rate increased by 86.5+/-4.9%. The average duration of the operation was 86+/-25 (43.7-138.3) min, the length of stay was 5 (2-6) days. The baseline creatinine level was 137 (110-200) mmol/L, compared to 142 (122-183) mmol/L postoperatively. The mean difference between the baseline and postoperative Hb level was 7.8 (1.3-17.5) g/l. The estimated glomerular filtration rate (GFR) before PCNL was 62.3+/-7.5 ml/min/1.73 m2, and it did not exceed 62.5+/-9.3 ml/min/1.73 m2 postoperatively. The overall complication rate ranged from 10.6 to 68.8%, averaging 29.9%. In most cases, there were grade I and II complications, according to Clavien-Dindo classification, which didnt require additional interventions. PCNL is a highly effective treatment method for patients with large stones in solitary kidney. Complications rate is relatively low, which is achieved by an individual approach, with a consideration of the condition and all risk factors.

  • The main shortcoming of time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) regarding its use for nonadiabatic molecular dynamics (NAMD) is its incapability to describe conical intersections involving the ground state. To overcome this problem, we combine Fermi smearing (FS) DFT with a fractional-occupation variant of the Tamm-Dancoff approximation (TDA) of TDDFT in the generalized gradient approximation. The resulting method (which we denote as FS-TDA) gives access to ground- and excited-state energies, gradients, and nonadiabatic coupling vectors, which are physically correct even in the vicinity of S1-S0 conical intersections. This is shown for azobenzene, a widely used photoswitch, via single point calculations and NAMD simulations of its cis-trans photoisomerization. We conclude that FS-TDA may be used as an efficient alternative to investigate these processes.Self-guided molecular/Langevin dynamics (SGMD/SGLD) simulation methods were developed to enhance conformational sampling through promoting low frequency motion of molecular systems and have been successfully applied in many simulation studies. Quantitative understanding of conformational distribution in SGLD has been achieved by separating microscopic properties according to frequency. However, a missing link between the guiding factors and conformational distributions makes it highly empirical and system dependent when choosing the values of the guiding parameters. Based on the understanding that molecular interactions are the source of energy barriers and diffusion friction, this work reformulates the equation of the low frequency motion to resemble Langevin dynamics. This reformulation leads to new forms of guiding forces and establishes a relation between the guiding factors and conformational distributions. We call simulations with these new guiding forces the generalized self-guided molecular/Langevin dynamics (SGMDg/SGLDg). In addition, we present a new way to calculate low frequency properties and an efficient algorithm to implement SGMDg/SGLDg that minimizes memory usage and inter-processor communication. Through example simulations with a skewed double well system, an argon fluid, and a cryo-EM map flexible fitting case, we demonstrate the guiding effects on conformational distributions and conformational searching.Protein conformational changes are activated processes essential for protein functions. Activation in a protein differs from activation in a small molecule in that it involves directed and systematic energy flows through preferred channels encoded in the protein structure. Understanding the nature of these energy flow channels and how energy flows through them during activation is critical for understanding protein conformational changes. We recently [W. Li and A. Ma, J. Chem. Phys. 144, 114103 (2016)] developed a rigorous statistical mechanical framework for understanding potential energy flows. Here, we complete this theoretical framework with a rigorous theory for kinetic energy flows potential and kinetic energies interconvert when impressed forces oppose inertial forces, whereas kinetic energy transfers directly from one coordinate to another when inertial forces oppose each other. This theory is applied to analyzing a prototypic system for biomolecular conformational dynamics the isomerization of an alanine dipeptide.     The main shortcoming of time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) regarding its use for nonadiabatic molecular dynamics (NAMD) is its incapability to describe conical intersections involving the ground state. To overcome this problem, we combine Fermi smearing (FS) DFT with a fractional-occupation variant of the Tamm-Dancoff approximation (TDA) of TDDFT in the generalized gradient approximation. The resulting method (which we denote as FS-TDA) gives access to ground- and excited-state energies, gradients, and nonadiabatic coupling vectors, which are physically correct even in the vicinity of S1-S0 conical intersections. This is shown for azobenzene, a widely used photoswitch, via single point calculations and NAMD simulations of its cis-trans photoisomerization. Based on the understanding that molecular interactions are the source of energy barriers and diffusion friction, this work reformulates the equation of the low frequency motion to resemble Langevin dynamics. This reformulation leads to new forms of guiding forces and establishes a relation between the guiding factors and conformational distributions. We call simulations with these new guiding forces the generalized self-guided molecular/Langevin dynamics (SGMDg/SGLDg). In addition, we present a new way to calculate low frequency properties and an efficient algorithm to implement SGMDg/SGLDg that minimizes memory usage and inter-processor communication.   • Brazil is home to 30% of the world's Eucalyptus trees. The seedlings are fertilized at plantation to support biomass production until canopy closure. Thereafter, fertilization is guided by state standards that may not apply at the local scale where myriads of growth factors interact. Our objective was to customize the nutrient diagnosis of young Eucalyptus trees down to factor-specific levels. We collected 1861 observations across eight clones, 48 soil types, and 148 locations in southern Brazil. Cutoff diameter between low- and high-yielding specimens at breast height was set at 4.3 cm. The random forest classification model returned a relatively uninformative area under the curve (AUC) of 0.63 using tissue compositions only, and an informative AUC of 0.78 after adding local features. Compared to nutrient levels from quartile compatibility intervals of nutritionally balanced specimens at high-yield level, state guidelines appeared to be too high for Mg, B, Mn, and Fe and too low for Cu and Zn. Moreover, diagnosis using concentration ranges collapsed in the multivariate Euclidean hyper-space by denying nutrient interactions. Factor-specific diagnosis detected nutrient imbalance by computing the Euclidean distance between centered log-ratio transformed compositions of defective and successful neighbors at a local scale. Downscaling regional nutrient standards may thus fail to account for factor interactions at a local scale. Documenting factors at a local scale requires large datasets through close collaboration between stakeholders.Gastrodia elata is widely used in traditional medicine and contains various types of metabolites with pharmacological activity. In the course of searching for neuroprotective molecules associated with the potential of G. elata in the treatment of neurodegenerative disorders, two new phenolic compounds (1 and 2) and a new tripeptide (3), together with 16 known compounds (4-19), were isolated from the rhizomes of G. elata. The structures of the compounds were determined by the interpretation of spectroscopic data, including nuclear magnetic resonance and mass spectrometry data. All obtained compounds were assessed for their ability to protect neuronal cells against neurotoxicity and neuroinflammation. Of these, 4 and 5 were found to possess moderate activities in HT22 hippocampal neuronal cells, whereas 2, 6, and 7 showed weak activities in R28 retinal cells. Additionally, compound 9 showed moderate inhibitory activity on lipopolysaccharide-induced nitric oxide production in BV2 microglial cells.Location-Based Services (LBSs) are playing an increasingly important role in people's daily activities nowadays. While enjoying the convenience provided by LBSs, users may lose privacy since they report their personal information to the untrusted LBS server. Although many approaches have been proposed to preserve users' privacy, most of them just focus on the user's location privacy, but do not consider the query privacy. Moreover, many existing approaches rely heavily on a trusted third-party (TTP) server, which may suffer from a single point of failure. To solve the problems above, in this paper we propose a Cache-Based Privacy-Preserving (CBPP) solution for users in LBSs. Different from the previous approaches, the proposed CBPP solution protects location privacy and query privacy simultaneously, while avoiding the problem of TTP server by having users collaborating with each other in a mobile peer-to-peer (P2P) environment. In the CBPP solution, each user keeps a buffer in his mobile device (e.g., smartphone) to record service data and acts as a micro TTP server. When a user needs LBSs, he sends a query to his neighbors first to seek for an answer. The user only contacts the LBS server when he cannot obtain the required service data from his neighbors. In this way, the user reduces the number of queries sent to the LBS server. We argue that the fewer queries are submitted to the LBS server, the less the user's privacy is exposed. To users who have to send live queries to the LBS server, we employ the l-diversity, a powerful privacy protection definition that can guarantee the user's privacy against attackers using background knowledge, to further protect their privacy. Evaluation results show that the proposed CBPP solution can effectively protect users' location and query privacy with a lower communication cost and better quality of service.Excessive body mass, i.e., being overweight or obese, is a health concern associated with issues such as reduced fertility and lifespan. Some lemur species are prone to extreme weight gain in captivity, yet others are not. To better understand species- and individual-level effects on susceptibility to captive weight gain, we use two complementary methods phylogenetic comparative methods to examine ecological explanations for susceptibility to weight gain across species, and epidemiological approaches to examine demographic and environment effects within species. Data on body masses and living conditions were collected using a survey, yielding useable data on 675 lemurs representing 13 species from 96 collections worldwide. Data on species-typical wild ecology for comparative analyses came from published literature and climate databases. We uncovered one potential ecological risk factor species adapted to greater wild food resource unpredictability tended to be more prone to weight gain. Our epidemiological analyses on the four best-sampled species revealed four demographic and one environmental risk factors, e.g., for males, being housed with only fixed climbing structures. We make practical recommendations to help address weight concerns, and describe future research including ways to validate the proxy we used to infer body condition.Genebanks play an important role in the long-term conservation of plant genetic resources and are complementary to the conservation of diversity in farmers' fields and in nature.   • Live oral rotavirus vaccines have been developed by serial passaging in cell culture and found safe in infants. However, mechanisms for the adaptation and attenuation of rotavirus vaccines are not fully understood. We have prepared a human rotavirus vaccine strain CDC-9 (G1P[8]) which when grown in MA104 cells to passages 11 or 12 (P11/P12), had no nucleotide and amino acid sequence changes from the original virus in stool. Upon adaptation and passages in Vero cells, the strain underwent five amino acid changes at passage 28 (P28) and one additional change at P44/P45 in VP4 gene. We performed virologic, immunological and pathogenic characterization of wild-type CDC-9 virus P11/P12 and its two mutants at P28 or P44/P45 using in vitro- and in vivo-model systems. We found that mutants CDC-9 P28 and P44 induced upregulated expression of immunomodulatory cytokines. On the other hand, the two mutant viruses induced lower STAT-1 phosphorylation and grew to two logs higher titers than wild-type virus in human CaCo-2 safe in neonatal rats thus supports clinical development of CDC-9 for oral or parenteral vaccination in children.Porcine deltacoronavirus (PDCoV) is an emerging ***** enteropathogenic coronavirus. Importantly, our structural analyses indicate that the conformation of the 1B domain from arterivirus nsp10 undergoes a dynamic transition. The polynucleotide substrate channel formed by domains 1A and 1B adopts an open state, which may create enough space to accommodate and bind dsRNA during unwinding. Moreover, we report a unique C-terminal domain structure that participates in stabilizing overall helicase structure. Our biochemical experiments also showed that deletion of the 1B domain novel open state and has a unique C-terminal domain structure, which plays a crucial role in nsp10 helicase activity. The cellular kinase CK1α phosphorylates NSP2 on Serine 313 triggering the localization of vNSP2 to sites of viroplasm assembly and its association with hyper-phosphorylated NSP5. Using reverse genetics, we generated a rotavirus with a phosphomimetic NSP2 (S313D) mutation to directly evaluate the role of CK1α NSP2 phosphorylation on viroplasm formation. Recombinrotavirus, indicating the importance of this amino acid during virus replication. Using reverse genetics, we generated a rotavirus with a phosphomimetic NSP2 (S313D) mutation to directly evaluate the role of CK1α NSP2 phosphorylation on viroplasm formation.   • Osteoporosis is an age-related bone disease, affecting mainly postmenopausal women, characterized by decreased bone mineral density (BMD) and consequent risk of fractures. Literature data concerning the link between Hcy and osteoporosis are still debated. The aim of our study was to assess the relationship among Hcy and BMD, inflammation, vitamin status and bone turnover in postmenopausal osteoporosis. In 252 postmenopausal women, BMD was measured by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA). In addition to serum Hcy, erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR), C-reactive protein (CRP) and bone turnover markers (bone alkaline phosphatase-BAP, osteocalcin-OC, C-terminal telopeptide of type I collagen (CTX), vitamin deficiencies and MTHFR-C677T polymorphism were evaluated. Hcy, inflammation, bone resorption markers and prevalence of C677T polymorphism were higher, whereas vitamin D, B12, folate, and bone formation markers were lower in women with decreased BMD compared to those with normal BMD. The obtained results were interpreted in terms of (1) the uniformity of mixing of the polymer components upon compounding and (2) the homogeneity of the structure formed by the 3D printing. The values of the main factors (the processing parameters) were determined using the Taguchi method. Their application made it possible to improve the physical, mechanical, and tribological properties of the samples manufactured by the FDM method at the level of neat UHMWPE as well as the UHMWPE-based composites fabricated by compression sintering. A comparative analysis of the structure, as well as the mechanical and tribological properties of the composite obtained by the FDM method, and the hot pressing from 'optimized' feedstock was performed.   • Emergency operations are indicated for trauma and general surgery emergencies. The systematic approach to the injured resulted in proven better outcomes. The management of patients presenting with acute non-traumatic emergencies did not receive the same priorities.

    The purpose of the current study is to obtain prospective data from the general surgery divisions in Israel regarding the burden of acute care surgery (ACS) and the local and national groundworks dedicated to these troublesome diseases.

    A total of 25 (78.1%) of the 32 active surgical departments in Israel complied with the study. During the time frame of the study 1699 patients were admitted from the emergency departments of which 538 patients required surgical interventions. Only 16% of the hospitals in Israel have dedicated operating rooms, but 96% needed to cancel elective cases for emergency interventions during the morning hours; 51 (9.5%) elective cases were cancelled. Patients in need of emergency interventions waited 210 minutes in large hospitals (>1000 beds) significantly higher than medium (500-1000 beds) and small (<500 beds) hospitals (145 and 135 minutes respectively, p-0.006). Multivariate analysis showed that the size of the hospital (p<0.001), morning shift (p<0.001) and the diagnosis (p<0.001) were positively associated with long waiting times for surgery.

    A survey was administered to 131 physicians working at Barzilai Medical Center. Physicians were queried about their attitudes regarding euthanasia.

    Most doctors have encountered terminally ill patients within their work or personal lives; 62% agreed that a person has the right to decide whether to expedite their own death; 56% thought they should accept a patient's request to prevent/stop life-preserving treatment; 53% agreed that euthanasia should be allowed, while about 20% thought that in any case, doctors should preserve the patient's life, even despite the patient's wishes to die. Forty percent of doctors faced the dilemma of ordering DNR (Do Not Resuscitate). Only half of the physicians had a familiarity with the law, and 41% didn't know if a DNR procedure exists in their department. Doctors specializing in internal professions held more positive attitudes toward euthanasia than other professions. In addition, the doctor's years of experience, level of secularity, and number of encounters with terminally ill patients each had a positive correlation with their respective attitudes towards euthanasia.

    This article reviews the main recommendations described by the American and European Oncology Societies managing lung cancer patients infected by COVID-19.

    In the current pandemic setting, attempts should be made to avoid jeopardizing the prognosis of lung cancer patients, by maintaining current guidelines in oncology practice. In cases of patients with active infection, the recommendation is to hold treatment until recovery. For other patients, due to the aggressive nature of lung cancer, the guidelines suggest not to delay curative treatments in non-metastatic disease and provide palliative treatment in shortened protocols.

This article reviews the main recommendations described by the American and European Oncology Societies managing lung cancer patients infected by COVID-19. In the current pandemic setting, attempts should be made to avoid jeopardizing the prognosis of lung cancer patients, by maintaining current guidelines in oncology practice. In cases of patients with active infection, the recommendation is to hold treatment until recovery. For other patients, due to the aggressive nature of lung cancer, the guidelines suggest not to delay curative treatments in non-metastatic disease and provide palliative treatment in shortened protocols.   • A prominent model of the origins of speech, known as the "frame/content" theory, posits that oscillatory lowering and raising of the jaw provided an evolutionary scaffold for the development of syllable structure in speech. Because such oscillations are nonvocal in most nonhuman primates, the evolution of speech required the addition of vocalization onto this scaffold in order to turn such jaw oscillations into vocalized syllables. In the present functional MRI study, we demonstrate overlapping somatotopic representations between the larynx and the jaw muscles in the human primary motor cortex. This proximity between the larynx and jaw in the brain might support the coupling between vocalization and jaw oscillations to generate syllable structure. The main organs involved included the spleen (44%), skin (32%), lungs (30%), heart (19%) and central nervous system (9%). Serum vitamin B12 and tryptase levels were elevated in 74/79 (94%) and 45/57 (79%) patients, respectively, and none of the 31 patients initially treated with corticosteroids achieved complete hematologic remission. All 148 (98%) IM-treated patients achieved complete hematologic and molecular (when tested, n = 84) responses. Forty-six patients eventually discontinued IM, among whom 20 (57%) relapsed. In multivariate analysis, time to IM initiation (continuous HR 1,01 [0.99-1,03]; P = .05) and duration of IM treatment (continuous HR 0,97 [0,95-0,99]; P = .004) were independent factors of relapse after discontinuation of IM. After a mean follow-up of 80 (56) months, the 1, 5- and 10-year overall survival rates in IM-treated patients were 99%, 95% and 84% respectively. In F/P+ MN-eo, prompt initiation of IM and longer treatment durations may prevent relapses after discontinuation of IM.

The relation between miRNA-1228-3p and its target gene was investigated by dual luciferase report analysis.

We hypothesized that M. tuberculosis-specific inflammatory responses used to identify latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI) lose positivity during pregnancy. We also hypothesized that isoniazid preventive therapy (IPT) may revert LTBI diagnoses because of its sterilizing activity.

  • Context Children born prematurely have been treated with growth hormone (GH), and a significant improvement in height during the first years of treatment has been described. Objective To evaluate the influence of prematurity on near-adult height (NAH) after GH treatment. Design KIGS (Pfizer International Growth Database) was queried for children born preterm treated with GH. Setting KIGS database. Patients A total of 586 children short in stature born preterm with various GH status and with available gestational age (GA), birth weight, and NAH, all treated with GH. Intervention GH treatment. Main outcome measure NAH. Results Values were expressed as median. From the 586 children included, 482 born appropriate for GA (AGA; median age 8.26 years) and 104 born small for gestational age (SGA) (median age 8.54 years); 66.6% of preterm AGA had GH peak less then 7 µg/L during a provocation test, whereas only 8.6% of preterm SGA. Change in height standard deviation scores (SDS) from GH start to NAH after 8.04 years of GH treatment was 1.82 in preterm AGA. Respective values were 7.08 years and 1.08 SDS for preterm SGA (P less then 0.001); 57% of the variability of the growth response to NAH could be explained, and the distance to parental height was the strongest predictor. No significant changes in height SDS were observed from puberty start to NAH. No correlation was found with GA. GH treatment was well tolerated. Conclusion GH treatment resulted in significant improvement in height in children born preterm, particularly during prepubertal years and for those with GH deficiency. We find that FUS-ALS mutations induce a widespread loss of function on expression and splicing. Specifically, we find that mutant FUS directly alters intron retention levels in RNA-binding proteins. Moreover, we identify an intron retention event in FUS itself that is associated with its autoregulation. Altered FUS levels have been linked to disease, and we show here that this novel autoregulation mechanism is altered by FUS mutations.
