T2∗ was significantly increased in the lesion-sided MT vs the LT for the JOCD-affected knees (21.5 ± 0.7 [20.1, 22.9] vs 18.0 ± 0.7 [16.5, 19.5] ms, P = 0.002), but this same difference was also observed between the MT and LT in control knees (21.0 ± 0.6 [19.7, 22.3] vs 18.1 ± 1.1 [15.8, 20.4] ms, P = 0.037). We describe here the first R51Q SNX10 knock-in mouse model and show that **** homozygous for this mutation exhibit massive, early-onset, and widespread osteopetrosis. The mutant **** exhibit multiple additional characteristics of the corresponding human disease, including stunted growth, failure to thrive, missing or impacted teeth, occasional osteomyelitis, and a significantly-reduced lifespan. Osteopetrosis in this model is the result of osteoclast inactivity that, in turn, is caused by absence of ruffled borders in the mutant osteoclasts and by their inability to secrete protons. These results confirm that the R51Q mutation in SNX10 is a causative factor in ARO and provide a model system for studying this rare disease. Xuezhikang (XZK), an extract derived from red yeast rice, is commonly employed as a traditional Chinese medicine for treating coronary heart disease, improving endothelial function, decreasing blood lipids and preventing other cardiovascular events both within China and globally. However, there have not been studies of the toxicity associated with XZK. In this publication we hope to summarize and evaluate an acute study, a 26-week chronic toxicity study, and the genetic toxicity potential of XZK. Firstly, Sprague Dawley (SD) rats were treated with XZK at dose of 10 g/kg to observe the acute toxicity. Then, we sought to assess the toxicity of XZK (0, 500, 1000, and 2000 mg/kg) in SD rats for 26 weeks with a 4-week recovery period. Lastly, we assessed the genotoxicity of XZK utilizing an Ames test, chromosomal aberration assay, and mammalian micronucleus test. The results of the acute study, XZK did not induce toxicity up to the maximum doses of 10 g/kg in rats, so an LD50 could not be determined. In the chronic study, XZK administrated via gavage did not alter weight, food intake, urinalysis parameters, hematological analysis parameters, organ weight, organ to weight ratio, microscopic and macroscopic examination of organs. Also, we found no genotoxicity markers at any dose of XZK tested. The results revealed that the no observed adverse effect level (NOAEL) for XZK, based on the 26-week toxicity study, was 2000 mg/kg. BACKGROUND ST11 Klebsiella pneumoniae is among the most important clinical pathogen in China, and KL47 and KL64 are the dominant K-types of these strains. Understanding the genomic characteristics of these strains would be critical to their anti-infection treatment. METHODS 364 genome sequences of ST11 K. pneumoniae strains isolated from 13 countries from 2003 to 2018 were collected. These genome sequences included 338 downloaded from NCBI database and 26 newly sequenced. Phylogenic analysis, pan-genome and unique genes, resistance and virulence genes analysis were conducted to elucidate the molecular characteristics of these strains. RESULTS A total of 19,732 genes were identified from the 364 ST11 strains, and the pan-genome was open, indicating the genetic diversity of ST11 K. pneumoniae. These strains were clustered into 3 clades. Clade 1 contained the most various K-types (14/15, 93.3%) and unique genes. KL47 and KL64 were the dominant K-types of clade 2 and clade 3, accounting for 100% and 99.4% of strains in each clade. KL64 strains contained the most virulence genes, including iucA and rmpA, and the two genes tend to coexist. In addition, strains in clade 1 were isolated from all 13 countries, and the strains in clade 2 and 3 mainly from China. CONCLUSION ST11 K. pneumoniae strains of KL64 was becoming a newly emerged superbug with more resistance and virulence genes in China, which was significant different from other countries, and we should be alert the dissemination of this subclone. Alcohol Use Disorder (AUD) has a major national impact, affecting over 18 million people, causing approximately 88,000 deaths and costing upward of $220 billion annually in the US. Unfortunately, FDA-approved AUD pharmaceuticals are few, and clinical benefits are mostly ineffective in patients suffering AUD. Therefore, the identification of novel targets and/or innovative methods for the development of safe and effective medications represents a critical public health need. Previously, we reported that avermectin compounds (Ivermectin [IVM] and moxidectin [MOX]) significantly reduced ethanol intake in male and female ****. However, avermectin compounds are readily effluxed by P-glycoprotein (Pgp/ABCB1) in the blood-brain barrier (BBB), resulting in reduced retention time by the drugs in the central nervous system (CNS). As such, the doses of IVM or MOX and the timeframe for significant reductions of ethanol intake is not ideal. Here we evaluate a novel combinatorial strategy involving IVM and tariquidar (TQ), a third-generation efflux inhibitor of Pgp, to reduce the dosing necessary for improving alcohol (ethanol) consumption behavior. We tested male C57BL/6J **** using a two-bottle choice study to evaluate ethanol consumption and preference. We found that injecting 10 mg/kg of TQ 30 minutes prior to IVM, resulted in a five-fold improvement in the efficacy of IVM (dosed at 0.5 mg/kg), resulting in a significant reduction in ethanol intake and preference. In addition, as a secondary objective, we adapted the translated version of SEFIP-dance for use among athletes or exercise practitioners (SEFIP-sport). DESIGN AND SETTING Questionnaire translation and cross-cultural adaptation study conducted at a public university. METHODS The Brazilian version of the SEFIP-dance questionnaire was developed following the processes of translation (involving two translators with Brazilian Portuguese as their mother tongue and fluency in English), backtranslation (involving two translators with English as their mother tongue and fluency in Brazilian Portuguese), committee review and pre-testing. SEFIP-sport was developed following the processes of content and face validation. RESULTS SEFIP-dance was applied to 30 dancers, of mean age 22.38 years (standard deviation [SD] = 3.41), among whom 14 were men (46.66%). The participants understood 100% of the SEFIP-dance items and alternatives. SEFIP-sport was applied to 30 athletes or physical exercise practitioners, of mean age 25.09 years (SD = 8.93), among whom 25 were men (86.33%). The participants understood 100% of the -SEFIP-sport items and alternatives. CONCLUSION The Brazilian Portuguese versions of SEFIP-dance, translated and cross-culturally adapted for dancers, and SEFIP-sport, adapted for athletes or physical exercise practitioners, were shown to have adequate levels of understanding.INTRODUCTION This study investigated the prevalence of blood donors' test-seeking behavior and related factors among health sciences undergraduate students. METHODS A total of 750 students were invited. Data regarding sociodemographic and behavioral characteristics, blood donation practices, and test-seeking behavior were collected. RESULTS Of the invited students, 341 (45.5%) agreed to participate and answered questions regarding test-seeking behavior. The sample comprised 83.1% females, 96.8% singles, 87.2% heterosexuals, and 32.6% of them had previously donated blood. A high prevalence of blood donor test-seeking behavior (14.4%; 95% CI 10.8%-18.5%) was observed and associated with blood donation practices. CONCLUSIONS Test-seeking behavior was common among the interviewed students, thereby highlighting the importance of developing a better understanding of its determinants to prevent this behavior in key populations.We present the first recent reported case of traumatic injury caused by catfish in the Americas. Although 66.2% of fish-related injuries occur in the Amazon Region, they are scarcely reported. We report a traumatic injury in a 2-year-old boy who entered Madeira River. The use of traditional methods to treat the injury and his incomplete vaccination history reflect the weakness of the health system. Our results confirmed the circulation of the Asian II genotype in Brazil, in addition to the prevalent Asian/American genotype. CONCLUSIONS The detection of Asian II genotype of DENV-2 in mosquito pools collected in a forest park may be related to a spillback event of human dengue virus.This is a case report about the only confirmed death in the State of Espírito Santo due to acute Chagas-related myocarditis in a 2-year-old child living in the rural area of Guarapari. He presented with fever, abdominal pain, headache, and vomiting, resulting in death 21 days after the presentation of symptoms. A total of 991 subjects were found with a follow-up period ranging between 5 weeks and 18 months. Telepsychiatry is an innovative use of technology to aid the delivery of PTSD treatments in areas difficult to reach. The quality of care given by telepsychiatry both through video conferencing as well as web- and application-based is comparable to that of face-to-face therapy.

Both parent and coach leadership behaviours are instrumental to adolescent athlete development. Researchers, however, are yet to examine parent and coach leadership influences simultaneously, and at different stages of adolescents' psychological and physical development. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to understand if the effects of transformational parenting, and transformational coaching on mental toughness and performance varied at different ages during adolescence. Early adolescent (ages 10-14) and late adolescent (ages 15-18) soccer players (n = 334) completed questionnaires assessing their perceptions of their mother's, father's, and coach's transformational leadership, as well as a questionnaire assessing mental toughness. Participants also completed a comprehensive battery of physical fitness tests relevant to soccer. Results indicated that transformational fathering was more strongly associated with levels of mental toughness for early adolescent athletes than it was for later adolescent athletes. Results also indicated that transformational coaching was more strongly associated with physical performance for later adolescent athletes than it was for early adolescents. Results Higher perceived levels of collaboration were associated with higher job satisfaction and lower depression score among service providers, and higher satisfaction with providers among family caregivers. Higher perceived social support from the provider was associated with higher satisfaction among family caregivers. Conclusions Participants reported varying levels of provider-family collaboration. There is a considerable lack of specific normative data in neuropsychological evaluations for transgender individuals due to the prevalence of binary gender categorization in current scoring protocols. However, a reasonable question is whether gender is such a significant normative factor, as the field of neuropsychology once thought?Method The current article reports on these issues in the context of a case of an 85-year-old transgender female who was referred to an outpatient neuropsychology service due to cognitive and functional declines.Results Her performance on the neuropsychological evaluation indicated significant decline across many of the cognitive domains measured. When using binary male and female normative data, scores did not statistically differ across the majority of the domains.Conclusions Overall, it was difficult to determine nuanced gender differences due to the patient's marked cognitive impairment. Here, we describe a set of excipients including a combination of trehalose, polyethylene glycol and dextran, and a method for using them that allows long-term dry storage of enzyme-based reagents for an isothermal strand displacement amplification (iSDA) reaction in a porous matrix. Various porous materials, including nitrocellulose, cellulose, and glass fiber, were tested. Co-dried reagents for iSDA always included those that amplified the ldh1 gene in Staphylococcus aureus (a polymerase and a nicking enzyme, 4 primers, dNTPs and a buffer). Reagents also either included a capture probe and a streptavidin-Au label required for lateral flow (LF) detection after amplification, or a fluorescent probe used for real-time detection. The reagents showed the best stability in a glass fiber matrix when stored in the presence of 10% trehalose and 2.5% dextran. The reagents were stable for over a year at ∼22 °C as determined by lateral flow detection and gel electrophoresis. Herein, a novel and efficient visible-light-induced photocatalytic process for the selective depolymerization of lignin model compounds and organosolv lignin was first developed by using perylene diimide (PDI) as a metal-free organocatalyst. BACKGROUND Thread lifting procedure was developed to reverse the aging process and restore youthful appearance by retightening and lifting the skin. Different models of absorbable and non-absorbable threads are universally available and promise quick results with minimum downtime. OBJECTIVES To evaluate the efficacy, safety, and cost effectiveness of the commonly used threads for facial lifting and rejuvenation using an evidence-based review. METHODS A comprehensive search of the literature was done using numerous databases (including Cochrane Collaboration, PubMed, Ovid, and Google Scholar). Thread lift for non-aesthetic purpose, open surgical procedure, animals or cadaver studies were excluded. 16 relevant studies were included. The extracted data included significant details related to the review question. RESULTS Several types of threads with different designs and properties are available for facial rejuvenation, provided by many companies all over the world. Higher quality evidence was found for Contour thread (III). Available studies for the other various threads were level IV. In this study, we evaluate the clinical efficacy and tolerability of microfocused ultrasound with visualization (MFU-V) and injectable calcium hydroxylapatite (CaHA) filler diluted with normal saline, for the correction of age-related changes and to assess patients' satisfaction with this combination therapy. METHODS This was a randomized, split-face, comparative clinical study and immunohistochemical analysis in 20 subjects with indications for lower face, neck and décolleté lifting. Over five visits, CaHA diluted with normal saline (12) was injected subdermally in the lower third of the face, neck and décolleté, and lower abdominal quadrant. MFU-V was performed on the lower third of the face, neck, and décolleté, and the right lower abdominal quadrant. RESULTS Upon baseline examination, the age-related changes were quantified as follows marionette lines score 2.47 ± 0.8, jawline contour score 2.2 ± 0.7 and neck score 2.1 ± 0.7 points; and after 15 months, they changed to 1.8 ± 0.7 (P≤0.00003), 1.89 ± 0.56 (P≤0.005), and 1.7 ± 0.6 (P≤0.005) points, respectively. The procedures were well tolerated, and subject satisfaction was high. CONCLUSIONS The injections of CaHA in combination with MFU-V treatment stimulated neoangiogenesis, led to the increased synthetic activity of cells, a marked increase in collagen and elastin fibers, and remodeling of both the superficial and deep layers of the dermis. As with all procedures, expected and unexpected consequences may follow including bruising, swelling, discomfort, and the possibility of infection. This paper outlines the scientific process and validation of a product designed as an adjunct to injection therapy and the scientific deep dive needed to encompass both symptomatic and adjunctive purposes. On the symptomatic side, bruising, swelling, and pain were considered, while volumetric enhancement, regeneration, and anti-microbial/biofilm effects were desired outcomes from the adjunctive perspective. Utilizing peptides and active agents aimed at reducing excess residual iron and stimulating macrophage absorption of red blood cells, we were able to achieve efficient resolution of bruising. In addition, peptides were included to stimulate collagen, elastin, and hyaluronic acid in synergy with the injectable. Anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and antibiofilm agents were added to aid in the safety profile of the injectable. This system can be used in scenarios that require autonomous cruise, such as self-powered inspections of UAVs, patrols in parks, etc.In 2012, the Euroscreen project published a review of incidence-based mortality evaluations of breast cancer screening programmes. In this paper, we update this review to October 2019 and expand its scope from Europe to worldwide. We carried out a systematic review of incidence-based mortality studies of breast cancer screening programmes, and a meta-analysis of the estimated effects of both invitation to screening and attendance at screening, with adjustment for self-selection bias, on incidence-based mortality from breast cancer. We found 27 valid studies. The results of the meta-analysis showed a significant 22% reduction in breast cancer mortality with invitation to screening, with a relative risk of 0.78 (95% CI 0.75-0.82), and a significant 33% reduction with actual attendance at screening (RR 0.67, 95% CI 0.61-0.75). Two fluorinated alkylsilanes (1H,1H,2H,2H-perfluorooctyltriethoxysilane (PFOTES) and trifluoropropyltriethoxysilane (TFPTES)) and two non-fluorinated alkylsilanes (octyltriethoxysilane (OTES) and propyltriethoxysilane (PTES)) were adopted to silylate the silica membrane by the post-grafting method which is used for the separation of MTBE from water by pervaporation. The results show that silylation enhances the hydrophobicity of silica membranes. The silylated silica membranes are selective towards MTBE, and the MTBE/water separation factor varies with grafting agents in the order PFOTES > TFPTES > OTES > PTES. Membranes silylated with fluorinated carbon chains seem to be more selective towards MTBE than those with non-fluorinated carbon chains. The total flux is proportional to the pore volume of silica membranes, which depends on grafting agents in the order PTES > PFOTES > OTES > TFPTES. Considering both total flux and selectivity, the PFOTES-SiO2 membrane is most effective in separation, with a MTBE/water separation factor of 24.6 and a total flux of 0.35 kg m-2 h-1 under a MTBE concentration of 3.0% and a feed temperature of 30 °C.Autophagy can remove excess or dysfunctional proteins and organelles to maintain cellular homeostasis. The sample is loaded into the microchannels via capillary action and reacts with the reagents to produce a colourimetric signal. Unlike dipstick tests, this device allows the loading of bacterial/pathogenic samples for antimicrobial testing. In this paper, we update this review to October 2019 and expand its scope from Europe to worldwide. We carried out a systematic review of incidence-based mortality studies of breast cancer screening programmes, and a meta-analysis of the estimated effects of both invitation to screening and attendance at screening, with adjustment for self-selection bias, on incidence-based mortality from breast cancer. We found 27 valid studies. The results of the meta-analysis showed a significant 22% reduction in breast cancer mortality with invitation to screening, with a relative risk of 0.78 (95% CI 0.75-0.82), and a significant 33% reduction with actual attendance at screening (RR 0.67, 95% CI 0.61-0.75). The results show that silylation enhances the hydrophobicity of silica membranes. The silylated silica membranes are selective towards MTBE, and the MTBE/water separation factor varies with grafting agents in the order PFOTES > TFPTES > OTES > PTES. Membranes silylated with fluorinated carbon chains seem to be more selective towards MTBE than those with non-fluorinated carbon chains. The total flux is proportional to the pore volume of silica membranes, which depends on grafting agents in the order PTES > PFOTES > OTES > TFPTES. Fear of illness and uncertainty about the future precipitate anxiety- and stress-related disorders, and several groups have rightfully called for the creation and dissemination of robust mental health screening and treatment programs for the general public and front-line healthcare workers. However, in addition to pandemic-associated psychological distress, the direct effects of the virus itself (several acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus; SARS-CoV-2), and the subsequent host immunologic response, on the human central nervous system (CNS) and related outcomes are unknown. We discuss currently available evidence of COVID-19 related neuropsychiatric sequelae while drawing parallels to past viral pandemic-related outcomes. Past pandemics have demonstrated that diverse types of neuropsychiatric symptoms, such as encephalopathy, mood changes, psychosis, neuromuscular dysfunction, or demyelinating processes, may accompany acute viral infection, or may follow infection by weeks, months, or longer in recovered patients. The potential mechanisms are also discussed, including viral and immunological underpinnings. Therefore, prospective neuropsychiatric monitoring of individuals exposed to SARS-CoV-2 at various points in the life course, as well as their neuroimmune status, are needed to fully understand the long-term impact of COVID-19, and to establish a framework for integrating psychoneuroimmunology into epidemiologic studies of pandemics. Little is known about changes in levels of psychological impact, stress, anxiety and depression during this pandemic. This longitudinal study surveyed the general population twice - during the initial outbreak, and the epidemic's peak four weeks later, surveying demographics, symptoms, knowledge, concerns, and precautionary measures against COVID-19. There were 1738 respondents from 190 Chinese cities (1210 first-survey respondents, 861 s-survey respondents; 333 respondents participated in both). Psychological impact and mental health status were assessed by the Impact of Event Scale-Revised (IES-R) and the Depression, Anxiety and Stress Scale (DASS-21), respectively. IES-R measures PTSD symptoms in survivorship after an event. DASS -21 is based on tripartite model of psychopathology that comprise a general distress construct with distinct characteristics. This study found that there was a statistically significant longitudinal reduction in mean IES-R scores (from 32.98 to 30.76, p 0.05). Protective factors included high level of confidence in doctors, perceived survival likelihood and low risk of contracting COVID-19, satisfaction with health information, personal precautionary measures. As countries around the world brace for an escalation in cases, Governments should focus on effective methods of disseminating unbiased COVID-19 knowledge, teaching correct containment methods, ensuring availability of essential services/commodities, and providing sufficient financial support. In this study, we investigated the anticancer activities of a combination of two natural compounds with different origin, hypericin (plant product) in its photoactive state and Manumycin A (yeast product) and explored the underlying mechanisms of their pro-apoptotic action using an oxaliplatin-resistant variant of human colon adenocarcinoma cell line HT-29-OxR as the experimental model. CCK-8 assay was performed to evaluate the cytotoxicity of the drugs. CalcuSyn software was used to identify the type of interaction between the two agents. BrdU incorporation assay and colony forming assay were performed to study the short- and long-term proliferation of cells. To evaluate the ability of the drug combination to induce apoptosis, PARP p85 fragment was detected using the ELISA method. Changes in apoptosis-related proteins were examined by immunoassays. Our results showed that a synergistic combination of photoactive hypericin and Manumycin A decreased viability, inhibited both short- and long-term cell proliferation, decreased levels of IAPs proteins (cIAP1, cIAP2, XIAP and survivin), induced an apoptotic PARP cleavage associated with decline in procaspase-3 level, promoted phagocytosis of cancer cells, and restored chemosensitivity to oxaliplatin. Targeted covalent inhibitors and chemical probes have become integral parts of drug discovery approaches. Given the advantages of fragment-based drug discovery, screening electrophilic fragments emerged as a promising alternative to discover and validate novel targets and to generate viable chemical starting points even for targets that are barely tractable. In this review, we present recent principles and considerations in the design of electrophilic fragment libraries from the selection of the appropriate covalent warhead through the design of the covalent fragment to the compilation of the library. We then summarize recent screening methodologies of covalent fragments against surrogate models, proteins, and the whole proteome, or living cells. Key ethical, quality, and safety guidance for the selection of donors, the collection and processing of blood, and the transfusion of COVID‐19 convalescent plasma should be followed. Governments should be reminded that an adequate supply of quality and safe blood components for transfusion is essential to meet the primary healthcare needs of the population. The response to the COVID‐19 epidemic highlights the importance of capacity building for an organized and sustainable national blood system while steps are taken to provide appropriately collected, tested and processed COVID‐19 convalescent plasma for investigational clinical use.An increase in pulmonary artery pressure is a common observation in adult mammals exposed to global alveolar hypoxia. It is considered a maladaptive response that places an increased workload on the right ventricle. The mechanisms initiating and maintaining the elevated pressure are of considerable interest to understanding pulmonary vascular homeostasis. There is an expectation that identifying the key molecules in the integrated vascular response to hypoxia will inform potential drug targets. One strategy is to take advantage of experiments of nature; specifically, to understand the genetic basis for the inter-individual variation in the pulmonary vascular response to acute and chronic hypoxia. To date, detailed phenotyping of highlanders has focused on haematocrit and oxygen saturation rather that cardiovascular phenotypes. This review explores what we can learn from those studies with respect to the pulmonary circulation.Although the magnetically levitated centrifugal blood pump (mag-lev pump) is considered superior to other pumps in antithrombogenicity, thrombotic complications are still reported. Research on thrombus detection inside a mag-lev pump is very important for solving this problem. Our research group has already proposed a method to detect a thrombus inside a mag-lev pump in real-time without additional sensor, which is named the impeller vibration method. To efficiently advance our research with reproducibility, a preconditioning method to induce thrombus inside the pump was thought to be necessary. Therefore, this study aimed to develop a preconditioning method that induces thrombus formation. To verify this method, in-vitro experiments for thrombus detection were performed. A mag-lev pump developed at Tokyo Institute of Technology was used. A fibrinogen solution was coated on the inner surfaces of the bottom housing to induce thrombus formation at the target point inside the pump. The thrombus is detected by utgroups. The mean time was significantly shorter in group F (44 ± 29 min) than in group N (143 ± 38 min; p = 0.0019). Therefore, a preconditioning method that induced thrombus formation at the target point inside a blood pump was successfully developed.Aim Obesity has been associated with changes in autophagy and its increasing prevalence among pregnant women is implicated in higher rates of placental-mediated complications of pregnancy such as pre-eclampsia and intrauterine growth restriction. Autophagy is involved in normal placentation, thus changes in autophagy may lead to impaired placental function and development. The aim of this study was to investigate the connection between obesity and autophagy in the placenta in otherwise uncomplicated pregnancies. Methods Immunohistochemistry and western blot analysis were done on placental and omental samples from obese (body mass index [BMI] ≥30 kg/m2 ) and normal weight (BMI less then 25 kg/m2 ) pregnant women with singleton pregnancies undergoing planned Caesarean delivery without labor at term. Samples were analyzed for autophagic markers LC3B and p62 in the peripheral, middle and central regions of the placenta and in omental adipocytes, milky spots and vasculature. Results As pre-pregnancy BMI increased, there was an increase in both placental and fetal weight as well as decreased levels of LC3B in the central region of the placenta (P = 0.0046). Within the obese patient group, LC3B levels were significantly decreased in the placentas of male fetuses compared to females (P less then 0.0001). Adipocytes, compared to milky spots and vasculature, had lower levels of p62 (P = 0.0127) and LC3B (P = 0.003) in obese omenta and lower levels of LC3B in control omenta (P = 0.0071). Conclusion Obesity leads to reduced placental autophagy in uncomplicated pregnancies; thus, changes in autophagy may be involved in the underlying mechanisms of obesity-related placental diseases of pregnancy.Introduction As the pandemic of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2 or COVID-19) has impacted hospital routines in recent weeks, recommendations to reduce healthcare worker infections are being developed. Methods We report preliminary experience with the efficacy of an enclosure with augmented airflow to decrease the risk of exposure to aerosolized pathogens during airway management including endotracheal intubation. A particle generator was used to test the efficacy of the reduction of aerosolized particles by measuring their concentration within the enclosure and in the environment. Results No reduction in the concentration of aerosolized particles was noted with the enclosure flap open, whether the interior suction was on or off. However, with the enclosure closed and no augmented airflow (suction off), the particle concentration decreased to 1.2% of baseline. The concentration decreased even further, to 0.8% of baseline with the enclosure closed with augmented airflow (suction on). Discussion Aerosolized particulate contamination in the operating room can be decreased using a clear plastic enclosure with minimal openings and augmented airflow. Autophagy is involved in normal placentation, thus changes in autophagy may lead to impaired placental function and development. The aim of this study was to investigate the connection between obesity and autophagy in the placenta in otherwise uncomplicated pregnancies. Methods Immunohistochemistry and western blot analysis were done on placental and omental samples from obese (body mass index [BMI] ≥30 kg/m2 ) and normal weight (BMI less then 25 kg/m2 ) pregnant women with singleton pregnancies undergoing planned Caesarean delivery without labor at term. Samples were analyzed for autophagic markers LC3B and p62 in the peripheral, middle and central regions of the placenta and in omental adipocytes, milky spots and vasculature. Results As pre-pregnancy BMI increased, there was an increase in both placental and fetal weight as well as decreased levels of LC3B in the central region of the placenta (P = 0.0046). Within the obese patient group, LC3B levels were significantly decreased in the placentas of male fetuses compared to females (P less then 0.0001). Adipocytes, compared to milky spots and vasculature, had lower levels of p62 (P = 0.0127) and LC3B (P = 0.003) in obese omenta and lower levels of LC3B in control omenta (P = 0.0071). Methods We report preliminary experience with the efficacy of an enclosure with augmented airflow to decrease the risk of exposure to aerosolized pathogens during airway management including endotracheal intubation. A particle generator was used to test the efficacy of the reduction of aerosolized particles by measuring their concentration within the enclosure and in the environment. Results No reduction in the concentration of aerosolized particles was noted with the enclosure flap open, whether the interior suction was on or off. However, with the enclosure closed and no augmented airflow (suction off), the particle concentration decreased to 1.2% of baseline. The concentration decreased even further, to 0.8% of baseline with the enclosure closed with augmented airflow (suction on). Discussion Aerosolized particulate contamination in the operating room can be decreased using a clear plastic enclosure with minimal openings and augmented airflow.
