The women were followed from their first trimester. All women completed a 24-h dietary recall and life habits questionnaires. We tested for UIC, maternal and neonatal thyroid function, maternal autoantibodies, and neonatal outcomes.

    Median UIC in our cohort was 49 µg/L [25%-75% interquartile range (IQR) 16-91.5 µg/L], with 84% below adequacy range. No correlation was found between iodine deficiency and maternal or neonatal thyroid function which remained within normal ranges. Antibody status did not differ, but thyroglobulin levels were significantly higher in iodine insufficient subjects. UIC was higher in women consuming an iodine containing supplement. There was no association between UIC and dietary iodine content or water source.

    To assess the relationship between age at presentation and outcomes of patients with periocular sebaceous gland carcinoma.

    Retrospective case series of 241 patients.

    Of 241 cases, 29 (12%) were young adults (≤40 years), 122 (51%) were middle-aged adults (41-60 years), and 90 (37%) were older adults (>60 years). Based on the eighth edition of American Joint Committee on Cancer, most tumors belonged to T1 category (n = 78, 32%) on presentation. Wide excisional biopsy was the most common treatment modality (n = 183, 79%). There were no statistically significant differences in the clinical presentation, treatment approaches, and histopathology features amongst different age groups, except pagetoid spread which was higher in middle-aged adults (61%, p = 0.004). The incidence of tumor recurrence was higher in older age group compared to younger age groups, with 5-year, 10-year Kaplan-Meier estimate at 31%, 31% in young adults, 38%, 38% in middle-aged adults, and 45%, 100% in older adults (p = 0.03), respectively. The 10-year Kaplan-Meier estimate rate of locoregional lymph node metastasis, systemic metastasis, and death was higher in young adults (51%, 48%, and 48%, respectively) compared to middle-aged (30%, 17%, and 12%, respectively) and older adults (24%, 25%, and 27%, respectively), but the differences were not statistically significant.

    The aim of this descriptive article is to share the experience in Ege University, Turkey with favipiravir in the treatment of severe SARS CoV-2 pneumonia.

    This retrospective descriptive study included patients diagnosed with COVID-19 who presented with or developed severe pneumonia.

    Forty patients who completed a full course (at least 5 days) of favipiravir were included in the study. At baseline, 30 (75%) patients required treatment for respiratory distress. Thirty three patients (82.5%) were discharged from the hospital with full recovery, 6 patients (15%) died and 1 case (2.5%) was still at the ICU when this paper was written.

    This study provides relevant information for the treatment of COVID-19, suggesting that favipiravir was associated with significant clinical and laboratory improvements in the majority of the patients, is a safe drug with no serious side effects and would merit further investigation.

    The mRNA levels of the genes were determined in tumor tissues and peripheral blood samples of 45 colorectal cancer patients and colon tissues and peripheral blood samples of 5 healthy individuals. Real Time Polymerase Chain Reaction method was used for the analysis.

    Ralstonia solanacearum is a very rare cause of infection in humans. There is no described nosocomial outbreak due to R. solanacearum until yet. We determined R. solanacearum as the source of catheter-related bloodstream infection (CRBSI) outbreak.

    This outbreak analysis was carried out in a 1000-bed tertiary care university hospital in Turkey. The outbreak analysis included haematology, oncology, nephrology, gastroenterology wards, emergency department and intensive care units. The first case with R. solanacearum CRBSI was detected on May 20, 2019 and R. solanacearum was isolated in catheter blood cultures in 34 patients until October 3, 2019 Results Standart outbreak analysis procedures were applied. Culture samples were taken from the fluids administered via catheters. Cultures did not yield any bacteria.   • The study examines the moderating role of institutional quality and technological innovation on the empirical relationship between FDI inflows and four indicator variables of CO2emissions in 40 Asian countries for the period 1996-2016, by using generalized method of moment (GMM) estimation. First, from non-interactive regression, FDI inflows have positive impacts on CO2emissions; over all, from our empirical results, we conclude that the moderating role of institutional quality and technological innovation is crucial in the nexus between FDI and carbon CO2emissions and the interaction between institutional quality indicators and FDI inflows significantly reduce the level of CO2 emissions. Furthermore, the significant moderating effect of technological innovation is observed on the association between FDI and CO2 emissions. The results are important for policy makers in setting up long- and short-term policy to protect environmental quality.The coastline of the department of Antioquia, in Colombia, exhibits a wide variety of aquatic and land ecosystems rich in both diversity and abundance. However, it is exposed to a variety of human activities, including industry, tourism, and mining. Banana cultivation is the main activity carried out in this region, which offers large economic benefits. In addition, there are diverse fishery resources that are main basis of the economy and nutrition for the population. Over the years, the Gulf of Urabá has been affected by serious pollution problems due to elevated contents toxic compounds that deteriorate the aquatic ecosystem, even our laboratory has conducted previous studies in heavy metals in fish from this same area. The aim of this study was to evaluate the contents of chromium (Cr), lead (Pb), and mercury (Hg) in seawater and fish muscle in three fish species from the Gulf of Urabá that are commercialized and consumed by the population of the municipality of Turbo, using microwave-induced plasma optical emission spectrometry (MIP OES). The occurrence of toxic metals in seawater in this area has not been reported, and to the best of our knowledge, this is the first study. Cr and Pb concentrations in seawater from several sampling points were detected ranged from 0.025 to 0.369 mg/L and 0.012-0.165 mg/L, respectively, while Hg levels were below detection limit. Regarding fish samples, Pb and Hg levels range 0.64-1.91 mg/kg and 0.11-1.09 mg/kg, respectively. Sea catfish species exhibited the highest content of metals, followed by stone head catfish and anchovy, it which showed the lowest contamination by metals. In this study, levels that exceed the limits in Colombian regulations regarding metal contents in discharge points to surface water and fishery products for human consumption were found.Sediment resuspension is critical to the internal nutrient loading in aquatic systems. Turbidity is commonly used as an indicator for sediment resuspension and is proved to be highly correlated to wind speed in large shallow lakes. A field observation of wind speed and turbidity was conducted using a portable weather station and a YSI 6600V2-2, and an observation lasting for 39 days was evaluated in this study (the data points with wind speed > 4 m/s account for 75%). The daily average values (DA dataset) as well as daily maximum (MX dataset) and minimum values (MI dataset) were calculated from the instantaneous observations (IN dataset). Correlations in IN dataset were deduced based on machine learning methods and were compared to those obtained from DA, MI, and MX datasets.     The study examines the moderating role of institutional quality and technological innovation on the empirical relationship between FDI inflows and four indicator variables of CO2emissions in 40 Asian countries for the period 1996-2016, by using generalized method of moment (GMM) estimation. First, from non-interactive regression, FDI inflows have positive impacts on CO2emissions; over all, from our empirical results, we conclude that the moderating role of institutional quality and technological innovation is crucial in the nexus between FDI and carbon CO2emissions and the interaction between institutional quality indicators and FDI inflows significantly reduce the level of CO2 emissions. Furthermore, the significant moderating effect of technological innovation is observed on the association between FDI and CO2 emissions. The results are important for policy makers in setting up long- and short-term policy to protect environmental quality.The coastline of the department of Antioquia, in Colombia, exhibits a wide variety of aquatic and land ecosystems rich in both diversity and abundance. However, it is exposed to a variety of human activities, including industry, tourism, and mining. Banana cultivation is the main activity carried out in this region, which offers large economic benefits. In addition, there are diverse fishery resources that are main basis of the economy and nutrition for the population. Over the years, the Gulf of Urabá has been affected by serious pollution problems due to elevated contents toxic compounds that deteriorate the aquatic ecosystem, even our laboratory has conducted previous studies in heavy metals in fish from this same area. The aim of this study was to evaluate the contents of chromium (Cr), lead (Pb), and mercury (Hg) in seawater and fish muscle in three fish species from the Gulf of Urabá that are commercialized and consumed by the population of the municipality of Turbo, using microwave-induced plasma optical emission spectrometry (MIP OES). The occurrence of toxic metals in seawater in this area has not been reported, and to the best of our knowledge, this is the first study. Cr and Pb concentrations in seawater from several sampling points were detected ranged from 0.025 to 0.369 mg/L and 0.012-0.165 mg/L, respectively, while Hg levels were below detection limit. Regarding fish samples, Pb and Hg levels range 0.64-1.91 mg/kg and 0.11-1.09 mg/kg, respectively. Sea catfish species exhibited the highest content of metals, followed by stone head catfish and anchovy, it which showed the lowest contamination by metals. In this study, levels that exceed the limits in Colombian regulations regarding metal contents in discharge points to surface water and fishery products for human consumption were found.Sediment resuspension is critical to the internal nutrient loading in aquatic systems. Turbidity is commonly used as an indicator for sediment resuspension and is proved to be highly correlated to wind speed in large shallow lakes. A field observation of wind speed and turbidity was conducted using a portable weather station and a YSI 6600V2-2, and an observation lasting for 39 days was evaluated in this study (the data points with wind speed > 4 m/s account for 75%). The daily average values (DA dataset) as well as daily maximum (MX dataset) and minimum values (MI dataset) were calculated from the instantaneous observations (IN dataset).   • To examine the real-world cardiovascular effectiveness and safety associated with sodium-glucose co-transporter-2 (SGLT2) inhibitor compared with dipeptidyl peptidase-4 (DPP-4) inhibitor treatment in older adults with type 2 diabetes.

    In this retrospective cohort study, older adults with type 2 diabetes (aged ≥65 years) were identified in the Korean National Health Insurance Service database from September 2014 to December 2016. In total, 408 506 new users of an SGLT2 inhibitor or DPP-4 inhibitor were propensity score matched. Cox regression was used to estimate the hazard ratios (HR) and 95% confidence interval (CI) for outcomes of interest hospitalization for heart failure (HHF), all-cause death, myocardial infarction, stroke, diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA), bone fracture, severe hypoglycaemia, genital infection and urinary tract infection (UTI).

    Compared with DPP-4 inhibitors, new users of SGLT2 inhibitors had a lower risk of HHF (HR 0.86; 95% CI 0.76-0.97), all-cause death (HR 0.85; 95% CI 0.75-0.98) and stroke (HR 0.86; 95% CI 0.77-0.97), but a similar risk of myocardial infarction (HR 0.95; 95% CI 0.77-1.19). The risks of DKA, bone fracture and severe hypoglycaemia were similar between both groups, although genital infection (HR 2.44; 95% CI 2.22-2.67) and UTI (HR 1.05; 95% CI 1.00-21.11) were more frequent among new users of SGLT2 inhibitors compared with DPP-4 inhibitors.

    Our findings suggest that initiation of SGLT2 inhibitors offers cardiovascular disease protection and can be used safely in older adults with type 2 diabetes.

    Screening can detect cancer earlier. Uptake of breast, cervical, and bowel cancer screening in England is below 75%. This study identifies the barriers and facilitators underpinning HCP screening behaviours which can support screening uptake, and reviews the design of real-world interventions targeting these, assessing for congruence between the two. The aim was to provide recommendations to improve the design of interventions.

    Barriers/facilitators were identified by a literature review and qualitatively coded using the theoretical domains framework (TDF). Interventions were identified by stakeholders and coded using the behaviour change wheel and the taxonomy of behaviour change techniques. Congruence was assessed through comparing the intervention designs with behavioural science experts' recommendations which link the TDF domains to intervention design. Recommendations targeted missed opportunities.

    Barriers/facilitators were extracted from 60 papers and most frequently coded to the TDF domains environmental context and resources, knowledge and beliefs about consequences. Thirty-one interventions were identified, most frequently education, training or enablement functions, delivered via communication/marketing or service provision, and using BCTs designed to shape knowledge or highlight the consequences of or antecedents to screening. Intervention design was largely congruent with recommendations. However, there was less use of persuasion and modelling intervention functions and a reliance on BCTs such as providing instruction when other BCTs could be considered.

    Recommendations include to consider a broader range of intervention functions and BCTs, particularly for training interventions which should make use of recommended BCTs such as 'graded tasks'.

    To investigate differences in presenting patient characteristics, investigation, management and related outcomes between culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) and non-CALD chest pain (CP) patients presenting to the ED.

    A cohort study of 258 patients was enrolled on presentation to Liverpool Hospital ED with a complaint of CP over a 2-week period. Main outcomes included frequency and timeliness of diagnostic and radiological investigations, medication administered and ED length of stay. Administrative and clinical data were extracted and linked from Cerner EMR FirstNet®, PowerChart® and paper records.

    There were 155 (60%) CALD and 103 (40%) non-CALD patients. CALD patients were older by 10 years (95% CI 4, 15; P < 0.0001). There were no significant differences in the number of pathology and imaging investigations carried out in each group, and similarly there were no significant differences in the number of patients administered analgesia or cardiac-specific medications. Neither group differed in their ED length of stay (median 280 vs 259.5 min; P = 0.79) or hospital admission rate (median 56% vs 55%, P = 0.8).

  • However, thin film technology has opened new opportunities for ceramics processing. Thin films derived largely from the semiconductor industry can be deposited and patterned in new ways, have conductivities which can be altered during manufacturing to provide conductors as well as insulators, and can be used to fabricate flexible substrates. In this review, we give an overview of packaging for neural implants, with an emphasis on how ceramic materials have been utilized in medical device packaging, as well as how ceramic thin film micromachining and processing may be further developed to create truly reliable, miniaturized, neural implants.To increase the specific surface area, high-density (i.e. number per unit area) Ag nanosheets (ANS) with large electrochemically active surface area and rich edge active sites over Ag plates were synthesized via a facile electrodeposition approach in a double electrode system at a constant current of -1 mA for 1800 s. By adjusting the concentration of H3BO3 (0.5 M, 0.1 M and 0.05 M), which is used to control the growth direction of ANS, ANS-20, -50, -350 were obtained with varying thickness of 20 nm, 50 nm, and 350 nm, respectively. Notably, ANS-20 showed a remarkable current density of -6.48 mA cm-2 at -0.9 V versus the reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE), which is almost 1.6 and 2.4 times as high as those of ANS-50 and -350, respectively. Furthermore, ANS-20 exhibits the best CO selectivity of 91.2% at -0.8 V versus RHE, while the other two give 84.6% and 77.9% at the same potential. The excellent performance of ANS-20 is attributed to its rich edge active sites and large electrochemically active surface area (ECSA).Cell patterning holds significant implications for cell-based analysis and high-throughput screening. The challenge and key factor for formation of cell patterns is to precisely modulate the interaction between cells and substrate surfaces. Many nanosubstrates have been developed to control cell adhesion and patterning, however, requirements of complicated fabrication procedures, harsh reaction conditions, and delicate manipulation are not routinely feasible. Here, we developed a hierarchical polydimethylsiloxane nanosubstrate (HPNS) coated with mussel-inspired polydopamine (PDA) micropatterns for effective cell patterning, depending on both surface topography and chemistry. HPNSs obtained by facile template-assisted replication brought enhanced topographic interaction between cells and substrates, but they were innately hydrophobic and cell-repellent. The hydrophobic nanosubstrates were converted to be hydrophilic after PDA coatings formed via spontaneous self-polymerization, which greatly facilitated cell adhesion. As such, without resorting to any external forces or physical constraints, cells selectively adhered and spread on spatially defined PDA regions with high efficiency, and well-defined cell microarrays could be formed within 20 min. To measure the microdosimetric spectra, a 3D mushroom silicon-on-insulator microdosimeter connected to low noise readout electronics (MicroPlus probe) was used. The parameters of the MK model were determined for pancreatic cancer cells such that the calculated SFs reproduced previously reported in vitro SF data. For a cuboid target of 10 × 10 × 6 cm3, treatment plans of helium, carbon, oxygen, and neon ion beams were designed using in-house treatment planning software (TPS) to achieve a 10% SF of pancreatic cancer cells throughout the target. The physical doses and microdosimetric spectra of the planned fields were measured at different depths in polymethyl methacrylate phantoms. The biological effects, such as SF, RBE, and RBE-weighted dose at different depths along the fields were predicted from the measurements. The predicted SFs at the target region were generally in good agreement with the planned SF from the TPS in most cases.

    In this study, 4D-CT data from 16 lung cancer patients were obtained. Digitally reconstructed radiographs (DRRs) were simulated from the 4D-CT, and then used to reconstruct 4D CBCT using the conventional FDK (Feldkamp et al 1984 J. Opt. Soc. Am. A 1 612-9) algorithm. Different projection numbers (i.e. 72, 120, 144, 180) and projection angle distributions (i.e. evenly distributed and unevenly distributed using angles from real 4D-CBCT scans) were simulated to generate the corresponding 4D-CBCT. A deep learning model (TecoGAN) was trained on 10 patients and validated on 3 patients to enhance the 4D-CBCT image quality to match with the corresponding ground-truth 4D-CT. https://www.selleckchem.com/products/Rolipram.html The remaining 3 patients with different tumor sizes were used for testing. The radiomic features in 6 different categories, including histogram, GLCM, G3% for histogram, GLCM, GLRLM, GLSZM, NGTDM and Wavelet features.     The study demonstrated that 4D-CBCT image quality has a significant impact on the radiomic analysis. The deep learning-based augmentation technique proved to be an effective approach to enhance 4D-CBCT image quality to improve the accuracy of radiomic analysis.

    However, thin film technology has opened new opportunities for ceramics processing. Thin films derived largely from the semiconductor industry can be deposited and patterned in new ways, have conductivities which can be altered during manufacturing to provide conductors as well as insulators, and can be used to fabricate flexible substrates. In this review, we give an overview of packaging for neural implants, with an emphasis on how ceramic materials have been utilized in medical device packaging, as well as how ceramic thin film micromachining and processing may be further developed to create truly reliable, miniaturized, neural implants.To increase the specific surface area, high-density (i.e. number per unit area) Ag nanosheets (ANS) with large electrochemically active surface area and rich edge active sites over Ag plates were synthesized via a facile electrodeposition approach in a double electrode system at a constant current of -1 mA for 1800 s. By adjusting the concentration of H3BO3 (0.5 M, 0.1 M and 0.05 M), which is used to control the growth direction of ANS, ANS-20, -50, -350 were obtained with varying thickness of 20 nm, 50 nm, and 350 nm, respectively. Notably, ANS-20 showed a remarkable current density of -6.48 mA cm-2 at -0.9 V versus the reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE), which is almost 1.6 and 2.4 times as high as those of ANS-50 and -350, respectively. Furthermore, ANS-20 exhibits the best CO selectivity of 91.2% at -0.8 V versus RHE, while the other two give 84.6% and 77.9% at the same potential. The excellent performance of ANS-20 is attributed to its rich edge active sites and large electrochemically active surface area (ECSA).Cell patterning holds significant implications for cell-based analysis and high-throughput screening. The challenge and key factor for formation of cell patterns is to precisely modulate the interaction between cells and substrate surfaces. Many nanosubstrates have been developed to control cell adhesion and patterning, however, requirements of complicated fabrication procedures, harsh reaction conditions, and delicate manipulation are not routinely feasible. Here, we developed a hierarchical polydimethylsiloxane nanosubstrate (HPNS) coated with mussel-inspired polydopamine (PDA) micropatterns for effective cell patterning, depending on both surface topography and chemistry. HPNSs obtained by facile template-assisted replication brought enhanced topographic interaction between cells and substrates, but they were innately hydrophobic and cell-repellent. The hydrophobic nanosubstrates were converted to be hydrophilic after PDA coatings formed via spontaneous self-polymerization, which greatly facilitated cell adhesion. As such, without resorting to any external forces or physical constraints, cells selectively adhered and spread on spatially defined PDA regions with high efficiency, and well-defined cell microarrays could be formed within 20 min. Therefore, this easy-to-fabricate nanosubstrate with no complex chemical modification will afford a facile yet effective platform for rapid cell patterning.In this study, the survival fraction (SF) and relative biological effectiveness (RBE) of pancreatic cancer cells exposed to spread-out Bragg peak helium, carbon, oxygen, and neon ion beams are estimated from the measured microdosimetric spectra using a microdosimeter and the application of the microdosimetric kinetic (MK) model. To measure the microdosimetric spectra, a 3D mushroom silicon-on-insulator microdosimeter connected to low noise readout electronics (MicroPlus probe) was used. The parameters of the MK model were determined for pancreatic cancer cells such that the calculated SFs reproduced previously reported in vitro SF data. For a cuboid target of 10 × 10 × 6 cm3, treatment plans of helium, carbon, oxygen, and neon ion beams were designed using in-house treatment planning software (TPS) to achieve a 10% SF of pancreatic cancer cells throughout the target. The physical doses and microdosimetric spectra of the planned fields were measured at different depths in polymethyl methacrylate phantoms. The biological effects, such as SF, RBE, and RBE-weighted dose at different depths along the fields were predicted from the measurements. The predicted SFs at the target region were generally in good agreement with the planned SF from the TPS in most cases. To investigate the impact of 4D-CBCT image quality on radiomic analysis and the efficacy of using deep learning based image enhancement to improve the accuracy of radiomic features of 4D-CBCT. In this study, 4D-CT data from 16 lung cancer patients were obtained. Digitally reconstructed radiographs (DRRs) were simulated from the 4D-CT, and then used to reconstruct 4D CBCT using the conventional FDK (Feldkamp et al 1984 J. Opt. Soc. Am. A 1 612-9) algorithm. Different projection numbers (i.e. 72, 120, 144, 180) and projection angle distributions (i.e. evenly distributed and unevenly distributed using angles from real 4D-CBCT scans) were simulated to generate the corresponding 4D-CBCT.   • Betz cells-the gigantopyramidal neurons found in high amount in the primary motor cortex-are among of the most characteristic neuronal cells. A part of them contains the calcium-binding protein parvalbumin (PV) in primates. However, less is known about these cells in the human motor cortex despite their important role in different neurological disorders. Therefore, the aim of our study was to investigate the neurochemical features and perisomatic input properties of Betz cells in control human samples with short post-mortem interval. We used different microscopic techniques to investigate the primary motor cortex of both hemispheres. The soma size and density, and expression of PV of the Betz cells were investigated. Furthermore, we used confocal fluorescent and electron microscopy to examine their perisomatic input. The soma size and density showed moderate variability among samples and hemispheres. Post-mortem interval and hemispherical localization did not influence these features. Around 70% of Betz cells expressed PV, but in less intensity than the cortical interneurons. Betz neurons receive dense perisomatic input, which are mostly VIAAT- (vesicular inhibitory amino acid transporter) and PV immunopositive. In the electron microscope, we found PV-immunolabelled terminals with asymmetric-like synaptic structure, too. We presented the two pure odors and a mixture thereof to 33 healthy participants. The nostrils were stimulated alternately (monorhinal application). We analyzed the behavioral ratings (intensity and pleasantness) and functional brain images. First, we replicated our previous finding that, within the mixture, the eucalyptol component suppressed the olfactory intensity of the ammonia component. Second, mixture pleasantness was rated differently by participants depending on which component dominated their mixture perception. Approximately half of the volunteers rated the eucalyptol component as more intense and evaluated the mixture as pleasant (pleasant group). The other half rated the ammonia component as more intense and evaluated the mixture as unpleasant (unpleasant group). Third, these individual differences were also found in functional imaging data. Contrasting the mixture either to eucalyptol or to both single odors, neural activation was found in the unpleasant group only. Activation in the anterior insula and SII was interpreted as evidence for an attentional shift towards the potentially threatening mixture component ammonia and for trigeminal enhancement. In addition to insula and SII, further regions of the pain matrix were involved when assessing all participant responses to the mixture. Both a painful sensation and an attentional shift towards the unpleasant mixture component complicates the development of an efficient mask because a pleasant perception is an important requirement for malodor coverage.
    Numerous studies showed that adults with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) suffer from impairments in a range of cognitive functions when compared to healthy controls. However, only little is known about the neuropsychological functions when compared to various clinical control groups and whether a distinct neuropsychological profile can be identified for adult ADHD.

    This retrospective study examined data of 199 outpatients referred for clinical evaluation of adult ADHD, allocated either to an ADHD group (n = 78) or to one of two clinical comparison groups, depending on whether they show indications (n = 71) or no indications (n = 50) for the presence of psychiatric disorders other than ADHD. All individuals performed a comprehensive neuropsychological test battery.

    Data analysis revealed impairments in a range of cognitive functions in a substantial number of patients of all three groups. However, profiles of neuropsychological impairments were similar between groups. Furthermore, signifirajectory may need to take into account that deficits in a range of higher-order cognitive functions can be substantially explained by deficits in basic cognitive functions.Tetrahydroisoquinolines (TIQs) such as salsolinol (SAL), norsalsolinol (NSAL) and their methylated derivatives N-methyl-norsalsolinol (NMNSAL) and N-methyl-salsolinol (NMSAL), modulate dopaminergic neurotransmission and metabolism in the central nervous system. Dopaminergic neurotransmission is thought to play an important role in the pathophysiology of chronic tic disorders, such as Tourette syndrome (TS). Therefore, the urinary concentrations of these TIQ derivatives were measured in patients with TS and patients with comorbid attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (TS + ADHD) compared with controls. Seventeen patients with TS, 12 with TS and ADHD, and 19 age-matched healthy controls with no medication took part in this study. Free levels of NSAL, NMNSAL, SAL, and NMSAL in urine were measured by a two-phase chromatographic approach. Furthermore, individual TIQ concentrations in TS patients were used in receiver-operating characteristics (ROC) curve analysis to examine the diagnostic value. NSAL concentrations were elevated significantly in TS [434.67 ± 55.4 nmol/l (standard error of mean = S.E.M.), two-way ANOVA, p  less then  0.0001] and TS + ADHD patients [605.18 ± 170.21 nmol/l (S.E.M.), two-way ANOVA, p  less then  0.0001] compared with controls [107.02 ± 33.18 nmol/l (S.E.M.), two-way ANOVA, p  less then  0.0001] and NSAL levels in TS + ADHD patients were elevated significantly in comparison with TS patients (two-way ANOVA, p = 0.017). NSAL demonstrated an AUC of 0.93 ± 0.046 (S.E.M) the highest diagnostic value of all metabolites for the diagnosis of TS. Our results suggest a dopaminergic hyperactivity underlying the pathophysiology of TS and ADHD. In addition, NSAL concentrations in urine may be a potential diagnostic biomarker of TS.

  • Men living with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) are internationally recognized as a priority population for human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination. Our objective was to explore HPV vaccine uptake among men living with HIV in Ontario, Canada, and investigate differences between vaccinated and unvaccinated men. We used data from a cross-sectional questionnaire administered between 2016 and 2017 among men living with HIV and participating in the Ontario HIV Treatment Network Cohort Study. We calculated the proportion vaccinated against HPV, described vaccination experiences, and HPV vaccine knowledge, and calculated differences in characteristics between vaccinated and unvaccinated men. Among 1651 men (mean age = 51 years, 72% identified as gay), 7% were vaccinated (95% confidence interval[CI] 5.5-7.9%); 85% received their first dose at a primary care or HIV clinic. Among unvaccinated men, 40% were unaware of the HPV vaccine, 65% reported low perceived risk for HPV, and 8% discussed HPV vaccination with a physician. Compared to unvaccinated men, vaccinated men were younger, most identified as gay, had a higher education/income, reported a higher number of recent sex partners, and had a history of bacterial sexually transmitted infections (STIs), HPV, anogenital warts, and/or anal cancer. Our findings reveal that few men living with HIV were vaccinated against HPV. This may be influenced by low HPV awareness, prohibitive cost, and lack of physician recommendation. Several men reporting lower socio-economic status, older men, and heterosexual, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men were missed for vaccination. Primary care and HIV clinics may be ideal locations to increase uptake.Little research exists on the association between e-cigarette pack quantity and use. We examined whether using e-cigarettes every day or somedays was associated with purchasing e-cigarettes by the box/pack or as singles. Data are from the 2018-2019 Tobacco Use Supplement to the Current Population Survey, analyzed in 2020. The sample included adults who reported current e-cigarette use (N=2,413). We conducted multivariable logistic regression models to examine the association between purchasing e-cigarettes by the box/pack or as singles and using e-cigarettes every day or somedays. Models controlled for demographic characteristics, flavored e-cigarette use, and other tobacco use, and were stratified by sex and device type. Of the 2,413 respondents, 63.1% reported purchasing e-cigarettes as singles, while 36.9% reported buying by the box or pack. Among those who purchased by the box and singles, approximately 56% and 50% used e-cigarettes every day, respectively. Those who reported purchasing by the box/pack had greater odds of every day e-cigarette use compared to some day use (Adjusted Odds Ratio 1.36, 95% CI 1.09, 1.68). This finding held for both males, females, and all device types. These findings present a first step in determining the relationship between e-cigarette pack size and use behavior.
    Speculation on benefits and harms of prescription, over-the-counter and complementary medications has been widespread during the SARS-CoV-2 (or COVID-19) pandemic. This community-based survey assessed self-reported changes in medications including those stopped, started, or if access had been impacted.

    A survey was collected via Research Electronic Data Capture (REDCap). The survey was advertised in the community through social media, email lists, websites, and post-cards. Survey responses were collected between 5/21/2020 and 6/24/2020. Variables included demographic characteristics such as age, sex, race, marital status, education, employment, income, and community type. Questions related to medication changes included "Have you started any medication due to COVID-19?", "Have you stopped any medication due to COVID-19?" and "Have you had issues getting your prescription medications?". Respondents aged 50 years or older were included.

    There were N=1397 responses of which 1169 were older adults ≥50 years played a critical role in providing medication information and continued access.
    In this community-based survey sample of over one thousand older adults, only a small percentage (2.7%; n = 31) reported any changes to medications during the pandemic. As essential workers during this crisis, pharmacists have played a critical role in providing medication information and continued access.
    Assessing drug prices relative to income in the US compared to other Organization for Economic Co-Operation and Development (OECD) countries provides context for policymakers seeking to improve access and affordability.

We identified frequently prescribed generic and brand name drugs for US and international comparison by drug price category (low-price generics, mid-price brands, and high-price specialty brands) as a function of income.     For the low-price drugs, all fell below 1% of all of the US income levels presented. Mid-price drugs were below 10% of income for those at the US median household income level but approached 30% of income for those at the FPL. High-price drugs varied greatly, reaching over 600% FPL for one product.

Respondents aged 50 years or older were included. There were N=1397 responses of which 1169 were older adults ≥50 years played a critical role in providing medication information and continued access.   • African American caregivers in low-income, urban communities have high rates of food insecurity. Unemployment, education, smoking, stress, and depressive symptoms are associated with household food insecurity. A cumulative risk model suggests that accumulation of risk may compound food insecurity risk, and certain risk factors are more likely to co-occur. This study utilizes two approaches to examine food insecurity risk among African American caregivers with an adolescent daughter-a cumulative risk index to examine accumulation of risk and food insecurity risk; latent class analysis (LCA) to determine if certain risk profiles exist and their relation to food insecurity risk. Caregivers completed surveys including demographic, psychosocial, and behavioral questions (to create a cumulative risk index) and a validated 2-item food insecurity screen. LCA was used to identify risk profiles. Logistic regression was used to examine relations between cumulative risk, risk profiles, and food insecurity risk. Each additional cumulative risk index factor was associated with a 54% increase in odds of risk of food insecurity. LCA identified three subgroups high stress/depression (class #1), low education/low stress and depression (class #2), and low risk overall (class #3). Odds of food insecurity risk were 4.7 times higher for class #1, and 1.5 times higher for class #2 compared with class #3. This study contributes to understanding of how food insecurity risk relates to cumulative risk and risk profiles. Intraclass correlations were computed to compare the responses of each dyad on the HFSSM overall and by item. Results revealed that overall report of food security was significantly but weakly correlated (r = .40, p = .02) within dyads. The majority of fathers (60%) reported higher food security scores on the HFSSM than their respective female partners. Furthermore, item-level intraclass correlations revealed that some HFSSM questions had poor reliability between cohabiting parents. This research identifies that a potential shortcoming of the HFSSM is the under-reporting of food insecurity by fathers compared with mothers within the household. Analyses included a confirmatory factor analysis to examine the hypothesized structure of the 4D-FIS and an initial evaluation of reliability and validity. A four-factor model fit the data reasonably well as judged with fit indices. Results showed relatively high factor loadings and inter-factor correlations indicated that factors were distinct. Cronbach's alpha (ɑ) for the overall scale was 0.90 (subscale ɑ ranged from 0.69 to 0.91) and provided support for the scale's internal consistency reliability. There was fair overall agreement between the 4D-FIS and USDA FSSM adult scale, but agreement varied by category. Findings provide preliminary support for the 4D-FIS as a complementary measure of food insecurity, with implications for researchers, practitioners, and policymakers working in U.S. communities.

  • In the context of IgA1, these results have potential to provide insight into the molecular mechanisms implicated in the pathogenesis of IgA nephropathy, an autoimmune renal disease involving aberrant IgA1 O-glycosylation. In a broader sense, these methods and workflows are applicable to the studies of the concerted and competing functions of other glycosyltransferases that initiate and extend mucin-type core 1 clustered O-glycosylation.The establishment of European colonies across the world had important demographic consequences because it brought together diverse and distant civilizations for the first time. One clear example of this phenomenon is observed in the Canary Islands. The modern Canarian population is mainly the result of the admixture of natives of North African origin and European colonizers. However, additional migratory flows reached the islands due to the importation of enslaved Africans to cultivate sugarcane and the intense commercial contact with the American continent. In this review, we evaluate how the genetic analysis of indigenous, historical and current populations has provided a glimpse into the Canary Islands' complex genetic composition. We show that each island subpopulation's characterization is needed to fully disentangle the demographic history of the Canarian archipelago.     To propose a list of congenital anomalies having corresponding codes in the International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems, 10thRevision (ICD-10), with the aim of applying it in health surveillance.

    In December 2019, the following data sources were searched ICD-10; ICD-11; anomalies monitored by three surveillance programs; and a database of rare diseases (Orphanet). Anomalies were retrieved from these data sources, processed to check for correspondence with ICD-10 and reviewed manually to compile the list.

    898 codes were identified, of which 619 (68.9%) were contained in ICD-10 Chapter XVII. Of the 279 codes contained in other chapters, 19 were exclusive to the ICD-11 search, 72 to the surveillance programs, 79 to Orphanet and 36 to the search for terms in ICD-10.

    The codes contained in ICD-10 Chapter XVII do not capture the totality of congenital anomalies, indicating the need to adopt an expanded list.

    This is a descriptive study of tuberculosis cases notified at post-mortem. Data resulted from linkage of the Notifiable Health Conditions Information System-TB (SINAN-TB) and the Mortality Information System (SIM), and were described according to underlying cause of death tuberculosis, AIDS and other.

    In the 2,703 tuberculosis cases notified at post-mortem, a higher proportion was found of people of the male sex (73.5%), aged over 39 (80.8%), <8 years of schooling (66.5%), of Black and brown race/skin color (62.8%), with the pulmonary clinical form of tuberculosis (75.2%); there was also a higher proportion of cases notified by the public health service (57.6%) and in municipalities with HDI-M >0.7 (66.6%).

    This is an analytical cross-sectional study. Footage of 40 preterm infants was made in two views (lateral and anterior). The babies were placed in the supine position, with retroverted pelvis and semiflexed knees. Acrylic markers were positioned on surgical tape in eight predetermined anatomical points. We analyzed 4 variables in lateral view and 11 in anterior view (angular and linear) (ImageJ®), divided into two stages 1. same frames - three blinded evaluators analyzed frames previously selected by the main researcher (inter-rater analysis 1), reviewing these same frames after 15 days (intra-rater analysis 1); 2. different frames - each evaluator selected the frames from the original video and repeated the protocol (inter-rater analysis 2), with a review after 15 days (intra-rater analysis 2). In stage 2, we tested the reliability of the entire process, from image selection to the analysis of variables.
