  • Omega-3 long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids play a central role in neuronal growth and in the development of the human brain, since they are essential elements which depend on intake through diet to ensure an adequate amount. Fish and seafood are the main dietary sources of these fatty acids in Spain and in other countries. In order to assess the effect of the intake of common foods containing high amounts of omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids, a food frequency questionnaire was administered to parents of children and adolescents attending a primary school in Valencia (Spain), and the intake of dietary omega-3 such as eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) was estimated based on their fish/seafood consumption. Mortars were produced with various dosages of cement/aggregates, and the polyamide substitutions were 25, 50, 75, and 100% of the aggregates. The aim of this paper is to determine the density and the compressive strength of the manufactured mortars to observe the feasibility for being employed as masonry or rendering and plastering mortars. Results showed that with increasing polymer substitution, lower densities were achieved, ranging from 1850 to 790 kg/m3 in modified mortars. Mortars with densities below 1300 kg/m3 are cataloged as lightweight mortars. Furthermore, compressive strength also decreased with more polyamide substitution.

However, in vitro antibody neutralization potency did not uniformly correlate with in vivo protection, and some hu-mAbs were more protective in combination in vivo. Analysis of antibody Fc regions revealed that binding to activating Fc receptors contributes to optimal protection against SARS-CoV-2 MA. The data indicate that intact effector function can affect hu-mAb protective activity and that in vivo testing is required to establish optimal hu-mAb combinations for COVID-19 prevention.
    Full-thickness tracheal lesions and tracheoesophageal fistulas are severe complications of invasive mechanical ventilation. The incidence of tracheal complications in ventilated patients with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is unknown.

    To evaluate whether patients with COVID-19 have a higher incidence of full-thickness tracheal lesions and tracheoesophageal fistulas than matched controls and to investigate potential mechanisms.

    This is a retrospective cohort study in patients admitted to the intensive care unit in a tertiary referral hospital. Among 98 consecutive patients with COVID-19 with severe respiratory failure, 30 underwent prolonged (≥14 days) invasive mechanical ventilation and were included in the COVID-19 group. The control group included 45 patients without COVID-19. Patients with COVID-19 were selected from March 1 to May 31, 2020, while the control group was selected from March 1 to May 31, 2019.

    Patients with COVID-19 had severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 infection dieveloped full-thickness tracheal lesions and/or tracheoesophageal fistulas after prolonged invasive mechanical ventilation.   • The association between ejection fraction (EF) and mortality in TTS patients as compared to ACS is limited. This study aims to investigate the association between EF and clinical outcomes in patients with TTS as compared to ACS.

    This study compared in-hospital, and long-term incidence of clinical outcomes for 5 years in patients with TTS and ACS. The study was composed of two groups EF≥35% and EF<35%.

    The long-term mortality of the EF≥35% for 5 years was significantly higher in TTS patients as compared to ACS (18.1% vs. 7.7%, log-Rank; p<0.01).     Carboplatin-containing treatment regimens demonstrate moderate efficacy in metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer (mCRPC). In this study, we retrospectively analyzed the efficacy of carboplatin in relation to blood-based parameters.

    A retrospective chart review was performed for 20 patients with mCRPC who received carboplatin in a single center.

    Median overall survival was 3.8 months (95%CI=1.5-7.1), median progression-free survival was 1.7 months. We observed two partial remissions (PR, 10%), four stable diseases (SD, 20%) and 14 disease progressions (PD, 70%), resulting in a clinical benefit rate of 30%. A doubling of NSE (neurone specific enolase) values was associated with a 19% absolute higher response rate (95%CI=14-23, p=0.027). All other laboratory parameters failed as predictive markers of response to carboplatin. In univariate Cox regression analysis, only NSE was significantly associated with impaired PFS (HR=0.7, 95%CI=0.56-0.96, p=0.030).

    To establish a method of plan optimization in pelvic volumetric-modulated arc therapy (VMAT) for cervical cancer using the central-shielding (CS) principle.

    We created external beam VMAT plans for eight cases with non-bulky stage I-IIb using the CS principle based on the Japanese standard guideline. Clinical target volumes (CTVs) for whole-pelvis (WP) irradiation were created using published guidelines, and CTVs for CS irradiation were created by subtracting the uterus corpus and 4 cm-wide regions centered at the cervix and vagina from the CTVs for WP irradiation. For plan optimization of CS irradiation, a 4-cm diameter cylindrical volume centered in the cervix and vagina was created as the volume receiving a high dose in brachytherapy, and the volume overlapping with the rectum was defined as the Ant-Rectum. Dose-volume histogram (DVH) parameters of two CS VMAT plans with and without (VMAT

    Neisseria meningitidis (Nm) is primarily associated with asymptomatic nasopharyngeal carriage and invasive meningococcal disease (sepsis and meningitis), but like N. gonorrhoea (Ng), Nm can colonize urogenital and rectal mucosal surfaces and cause disease. First noted in 2015, but with origins in 2011, male urethritis clusters caused by a novel Nm clade were reported in the USA (the US_NmUC). This review describes research developments that characterize this urogenital-tropic Nm.

    The US_NmUC evolved from encapsulated Nm serogroup C strains. Loss of capsule expression, lipooligosaccharide (LOS) sialylation, genetic acquisition of gonococcal alleles (including the gonococcal anaerobic growth aniA/norB cassette), antimicrobial peptide heteroresistance and high surface expression of a unique factor-H-binding protein, can contribute to the urethra-tropic phenotype. Loss-of-function mutations in mtrC are overrepresented in clade isolates. Similar to Ng, repeat US_NmUC urethritis episodes can occur. The US_NmUC is now circulating in the UK and Southeast Asia. Genomic sequencing has defined the clade and rapid diagnostic tests are being developed for surveillance.

    A growing body of evidence suggests that integrase inhibitors (INSTIs) are significantly associated with weight gain and obesity. Obesity is a significant risk factor for metabolic syndrome and diabetes. This article comprehensively reviews recent available evidence weight gain and the risks of metabolic syndrome and diabetes associated with INSTIs.

    Recent evidence continues to contribute to the evidence for weight gain associated with INSTIs, especially when used with newer nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor, tenofovir alafenamide (TAF). Although the literature suggests a neutral effect on lipids, there is evidence that INSTIs are associated with metabolic syndrome due to treatment-emergent obesity. The literature for short-term treatment-emergent diabetes and insulin resistance remains inconsistent, but there is some evidence that weight gain could lead to an increased risk of developing diabetes in the future.

The survivals were best for patients with T1stage and epithelioid histology (69.8 months/54.1%). In a multivariable analysis, factors that were found to be associated with longer patient overall survival included epithelioid histology, T stage, quantitative clinical stage/tumor volume staging, adjuvant chemotherapy, intraoperative heated chemo, female sex, and length of stay shorter than 14 days.
    Recent publications demonstrate that cotrimoxazole and clindamycin remain reliable and realistic therapeutic approaches for SSTIs. Neisseria meningitidis (Nm) is primarily associated with asymptomatic nasopharyngeal carriage and invasive meningococcal disease (sepsis and meningitis), but like N. gonorrhoea (Ng), Nm can colonize urogenital and rectal mucosal surfaces and cause disease. First noted in 2015, but with origins in 2011, male urethritis clusters caused by a novel Nm clade were reported in the USA (the US_NmUC). This review describes research developments that characterize this urogenital-tropic Nm. The US_NmUC evolved from encapsulated Nm serogroup C strains. Loss of capsule expression, lipooligosaccharide (LOS) sialylation, genetic acquisition of gonococcal alleles (including the gonococcal anaerobic growth aniA/norB cassette), antimicrobial peptide heteroresistance and high surface expression of a unique factor-H-binding protein, can contribute to the urethra-tropic phenotype. Loss-of-function mutations in mtrC are overrepresented in clade isolates. Similar to Ng, repeat US_NmUC urethritis episodes can occur. The US_NmUC is now circulating in the UK and Southeast Asia. A growing body of evidence suggests that integrase inhibitors (INSTIs) are significantly associated with weight gain and obesity. Obesity is a significant risk factor for metabolic syndrome and diabetes. This article comprehensively reviews recent available evidence weight gain and the risks of metabolic syndrome and diabetes associated with INSTIs. Recent evidence continues to contribute to the evidence for weight gain associated with INSTIs, especially when used with newer nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor, tenofovir alafenamide (TAF). Although the literature suggests a neutral effect on lipids, there is evidence that INSTIs are associated with metabolic syndrome due to treatment-emergent obesity. Potential safety concerns exist regarding cardiac integrity and function in response to PRRT. We describe our institutional experience with 4 patients with well-differentiated, midgut neuroendocrine tumors with cardiac involvement detected on Ga-DOTATATE PET/CT scans who were treated with PRRT. Comparison of biodegradable polymer and durable polymer drug-eluting stents in an all comers population (BIO-RESORT) is a prospective, multicenter randomized clinical trial that included 3514 all-comer patients, who were randomized to very thin-strut biodegradable polymer-coated sirolimus- or everolimus-eluting stents, versus thin-strut durable polymer-coated zotarolimus-eluting stents.   • Coupled electrical-thermal finite element analysis (FEA) models are widely adopted to analyze the thermal ablation damage of carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) caused by lightning, but it is still difficult to analyze the ablation due to its complex space geometry. According to the principle of computerized tomography (CT), tomographic images of FEA models' temperature fields with different thicknesses were obtained to calculate the mass loss and compare the damage morphology. The four areas including Area 0, Area I, Area II, and Area III; were separated from the temperature fields in terms of different vaporization and pyrolysis temperature ranges of carbon fiber (CF) and resin matrix. Ablation mass losses were calculated by pixel statistics and tomographic intervals, which were consistent with the experimental results. The maximum ablation area of unprotected CFRP was found on the tomography images of 50 μm rather than the surface by comparing tomographic images with different thickness due to the influence of the thermal radiation, but this effect was not found in CFRP protected by copper mesh. Some other phenomena, including continuous evolutions of ablation areas and the influence of the intersection angle on the direction of the ablation extension, were also discovered.Dendritic cells (DCs) play critical roles in atopic diseases, orchestrating both innate and adaptive immune systems. Nevertheless, limited information is available regarding the mechanism through which DCs induce hyperresponsiveness in patients with allergies. This study aims to reveal novel genetic alterations and future therapeutic target molecules in the DCs from patients with allergies using whole transcriptome sequencing. Transcriptome sequencing of human ****-3+/CD11c+ DCs sorted from peripheral blood monocytes obtained from six patients with allergies and four healthy controls was conducted. Gene expression profile data were analyzed, and an ingenuity pathway analysis was performed. A total of 1638 differentially expressed genes were identified at p-values less then 0.05, with 11 genes showing a log2-fold change ≥1.5. The top gene network was associated with cell death/survival and organismal injury/abnormality. In validation experiments, amphiregulin (AREG) showed consistent results with transcriptome sequencing data, with increased mRNA expression in THP-1-derived DCs after Der p 1 stimulation and higher protein expression in myeloid DCs obtained from patients with allergies. This study suggests an alteration in the expression of DCs in patients with allergies, proposing related altered functions and intracellular mechanisms. Notably, AREG might play a crucial role in DCs by inducing the Th2 immune response.Recently, more and more smart homes have become one of important parts of home infrastructure. However, most of the smart home applications are not interconnected and remain isolated. They use the cloud center as the control platform, which increases the risk of link congestion and data security. Thus, in the future, smart homes based on edge computing without using cloud center become an important research area. In this paper, we assume that all applications in a smart home environment are composed of edge nodes and users. In order to maximize the utility of users, we assume that all users and edge nodes are placed in a market and formulate a pricing resource allocation model with utility maximization. We apply the Lagrangian method to analyze the model, so an edge node (provider in the market) allocates its resources to a user (customer in the market) based on the prices of resources and the utility related to the preference of users. To obtain the optimal resource allocation, we propose a pricing-based resource allocation algorithm by using low-pass filtering scheme and conform that the proposed algorithm can achieve an optimum within reasonable convergence times through some numerical examples.This study sought to determine whether single layer centrifugation (SLC) of fresh donkey semen with Equicoll has any impact on sperm quality parameters and on the modulation of endometrial reaction following semen deposition using an in vitro model. Seventeen ejaculates from five jackasses were obtained using an artificial vagina and diluted in a skim-milk extender. Samples were either selected through SLC (Equicoll) or non-treated (control). Two experiments were performed. The first one consisted of incubating selected or non-selected spermatozoa at 38 °C for 180 min. Integrity and lipid disorder of sperm plasma membrane, mitochondrial membrane potential, and intracellular levels of calcium and reactive oxygen species were evaluated at 0, 60, 120, and 180 min. In the second experiment, polymorphonuclear neutrophils (PMN) isolated from jennies blood were mixed with selected and unselected spermatozoa.     Cognitive impairment is associated with long-term disability that results in the deterioration of both the social and professional status of individuals with schizophrenia. The impact of antipsychotic therapy on cognitive function is insufficient. Cognitive training is therefore proposed as a tool for cognitive rehabilitation in schizophrenia. In this study we investigated the effect of self-administered cognitive training using a smartphone-based application on the cognitive function of paranoid schizophrenia patients focusing on response time, correct answer rate, incorrect answer rate, and fatigability to check, if these functions can be functional markers of successful cognitive-smartphone rehabilitation.

    1-year multicenter, open-label randomized study was conducted on 290 patients in a state of symptomatic remission. 191 patients were equipped with the full version of the application and conducted cognitive training twice a week. Reference group (
    = 99) was provided with a version of the application having only limited functionality, testing the cognitive performance of patients every 6 months.

The aim of our study was to fill that gap by investigating acute combined effects of Pb and Cd on redox and essential metal status in the brain of Wistar rats. Animals were randomised in four groups of six to eight rats, which received 15 or 30 mg/kg of Cd, 150 mg/kg of Pb, or 150 mg/kg of Pb + 15 mg/kg of Cd by gavage. The fifth, control, group received distilled water only. Co-treatment with Pb and Cd induced significant increase in malondialdehyde (MDA) and thiobarbituric acid-reactive substances (TBARS) compared to control and groups receiving either metal alone. This is of special importance, as MDA presence in the brain has been implicated in many neurodegenerative disorders. The groups did not significantly differ in Zn, Cu, Mn, and Fe brain levels. Our findings highlight the importance of metal mixture studies. Neurotoxicity assessments of single chemicals do not provide a real insight into exposure to mixtures in real life. Further research should look into interactions between these metals to reveal complex molecular mechanisms of their neurotoxicity.Acanthamoeba is an opportunistic protozoon, widespread in the aquatic environment, where it can be in endosymbiosis with over 30 pathogenic bacteria, including nontuberculous mycobacteria (NTM). Protozoa play a crucial role in mycobacterial pathogenesis and serve as a reservoir of infection. Since the first step in bacteria making contact with amoebae is adhesion, we were interested in investigating whether essential oils (EOs) can affect it. To that end we investigated the effects of juniper (Juniperus communis) and immortelle (Helichrysum italicum) EOs against Mycobacterium avium, M. intracellulare, and M. gordonae in tap water and against their adhesion to Acanthamoeba castellanii by combining them in synergistic EO concentrations. https://www.selleckchem.com/products/Cisplatin.html M. avium and M. intracellulare adhered to A. castellanii to a greater extent than M. gordonae. The adhesion of all NTMs was prevented by the subinhibitory concentrations of EOs. When comparing the effect of synergistic combinations of EOs and the effect of a single concentration from a combination, a higher percentage of adhesion inhibition in all synergistic combinations observed, except against M. gordonae. Neither oil was cytotoxic to A. castellanii. Our findings suggest that the EOs or their components weaken the contact of environmental NTMs and free-living amoebae and indirectly diminish their pathogenic potential, which could be of value in developing strategies for maintenance of water supply systems.All COVID-19 prevention strategies include regular use of surface disinfectants and hand sanitisers. As these measures took hold in Croatia, the Croatian Poison Control Centre started receiving phone calls from the general public and healthcare workers, which prompted us to investigate whether the risk of suspected/symptomatic poisonings with disinfectants and sanitisers really increased. To that end we compared their frequency and characteristics in the first half of 2019 and 2020. Cases of exposures to disinfectants doubled in the first half of 2020 (41 vs 21 cases in 2019), and exposure to sanitisers increased about nine times (46 vs 5 cases in 2019). In 2020, the most common ingredients of disinfectants and sanitisers involved in poisoning incidents were hypochlorite/glutaraldehyde, and ethanol/isopropyl alcohol, respectively. Exposures to disinfectants were recorded mostly in adults (56 %) as accidental (78 %) through ingestion or inhalation (86 %). Fortunately, most callers were asymptomatic (people called for advice because they were concerned), but nearly half reported mild gastrointestinal or respiratory irritation, and in one case severe symptoms were reported (gastrointestinal corrosive injury). Reports of exposure to hand sanitisers highlighted preschool children as the most vulnerable group. Accidental exposure through ingestion dominated, but, again, only mild symptoms (gastrointestinal or eye irritation) developed in one third of the cases. These preliminary findings, however limited, confirm that increased availability and use of disinfectants and sanitisers significantly increased the risk of poisoning, particularly in preschool children through accidental ingestion of hand sanitisers. We therefore believe that epidemiological recommendations for COVID-19 prevention should include warnings informing the general public of the risks of poisoning with surface and hand disinfectants in particular.Oxidative stress occurs when reactive oxygen species (ROS) production overwhelms cell protection by antioxidants. This review is focused on general anaesthesia-induced oxidative stress because it increases the rate of complications and delays recovery after surgery. It is important to know what effects of anaesthetics to expect in terms of oxidative stress, particularly in surgical procedures with high ROS production, because their either additive or antagonistic effect may be pivotal for the outcome of surgery. In vitro and animal studies on this topic are numerous but show large variability. There are not many human studies and what we know has been learned from different surgical procedures measuring different endpoints in blood samples taken mostly before and after surgery. Our findings highlight the importance of metal mixture studies. Neurotoxicity assessments of single chemicals do not provide a real insight into exposure to mixtures in real life. Protozoa play a crucial role in mycobacterial pathogenesis and serve as a reservoir of infection. Since the first step in bacteria making contact with amoebae is adhesion, we were interested in investigating whether essential oils (EOs) can affect it. To that end we investigated the effects of juniper (Juniperus communis) and immortelle (Helichrysum italicum) EOs against Mycobacterium avium, M. intracellulare, and M. gordonae in tap water and against their adhesion to Acanthamoeba castellanii by combining them in synergistic EO concentrations. https://www.selleckchem.com/products/Cisplatin.html M. avium and M. intracellulare adhered to A. castellanii to a greater extent than M. gordonae. The adhesion of all NTMs was prevented by the subinhibitory concentrations of EOs. When comparing the effect of synergistic combinations of EOs and the effect of a single concentration from a combination, a higher percentage of adhesion inhibition in all synergistic combinations observed, except against M. gordonae. Neither oil was cytotoxic to A. castellanii. Our findings suggest that the EOs or their components weaken the contact of environmental NTMs and free-living amoebae and indirectly diminish their pathogenic potential, which could be of value in developing strategies for maintenance of water supply systems.All COVID-19 prevention strategies include regular use of surface disinfectants and hand sanitisers. As these measures took hold in Croatia, the Croatian Poison Control Centre started receiving phone calls from the general public and healthcare workers, which prompted us to investigate whether the risk of suspected/symptomatic poisonings with disinfectants and sanitisers really increased. To that end we compared their frequency and characteristics in the first half of 2019 and 2020. Cases of exposures to disinfectants doubled in the first half of 2020 (41 vs 21 cases in 2019), and exposure to sanitisers increased about nine times (46 vs 5 cases in 2019). In 2020, the most common ingredients of disinfectants and sanitisers involved in poisoning incidents were hypochlorite/glutaraldehyde, and ethanol/isopropyl alcohol, respectively. Exposures to disinfectants were recorded mostly in adults (56 %) as accidental (78 %) through ingestion or inhalation (86 %). Fortunately, most callers were asymptomatic (people called for advice because they were concerned), but nearly half reported mild gastrointestinal or respiratory irritation, and in one case severe symptoms were reported (gastrointestinal corrosive injury). Reports of exposure to hand sanitisers highlighted preschool children as the most vulnerable group. Accidental exposure through ingestion dominated, but, again, only mild symptoms (gastrointestinal or eye irritation) developed in one third of the cases. These preliminary findings, however limited, confirm that increased availability and use of disinfectants and sanitisers significantly increased the risk of poisoning, particularly in preschool children through accidental ingestion of hand sanitisers. Multiple linear regression was used to examine if timing of prenatal care initiation was related to psychological variables.

    Sixty-three women (32%) reported they were not able to initiate their first prenatal care visit as early as they wanted due to various barriers. After adjusting for cofounders, not initiating prenatal care as early as women wanted predicted lower levels of psychological wellbeing.

    To appropriately plan a prospective trial for the organ preservation approach which includes additional chemoradiotherapy in patients who responded to NAC, the distribution of residual disease needs to be elucidated. Given that the residual tumor is located in the regional field, chemoradiotherapy can be safely added to eliminate the residual disease.

    Overall, 483 patients with resectable ESCC who received NAC followed by transthoracic esophagectomy at 2 high-volume centers were reviewed. The recurrence-free survival, overall survival (OS), and residual and recurrent tumor patterns were compared among the pathological responses.

    Compared with nonpathological responders, pathological responders exhibited significantly longer recurrence-free survival [hazard ratio of Grade 1b/2/3 compared with Grade 0; 0.25 (P < 0.001) /0.17 (P < 0.001) /0.16 (P = 0.003)] and OS [hazard ratio of Grade 1b/2/3 compared with Grade 0; 0.26 (P < 0.001) /0.12 (P < 0.001) /0.11 (P = 0.003)].   • This study explores whether ancient Atacama Desert populations in northern Chile were exposed to endemic boron contamination.

    Using Laser Ablation-Inductively Coupled Plasma-Mass Spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS), we studied 144 strands of ancient mummy hair, ranging from 3000 B.C. to 1500 A.D., excavated from the Lluta, Azapa, and Camarones valleys in northern Chile. We tested whether these ancient populations showed signs of significant boron concentration in hair tissue.

    On average, all individuals from these valleys showed high boron concentrations, ranging from 1.5 to 4 times above the average boron concentration in contemporary hair (baseline <0.85 μg/g). The boron concentration in mummy hair varied according to the main geographic areas mentioned above.

    The rivers of northern Chile have high geogenic boron concentrations. They contain 38 times above the recommended limit for human consumption. Geogenic boron contamination likely played a role in population morbidity and the types of crops that were cultivated in antiquity. The ancient populations were chronically affected by boron overexposure, suggesting that ancient geogenic water contamination should be considered when discussing the biocultural trajectories of ancient populations.

We describe the case of an orthotopic liver transplantation (OLT) in a young female who presented with acute liver failure secondary to acetaminophen toxicity to manage abdominal pain and in the setting of a positive SARS-CoV2 test. Despite a positive test, she had no respiratory symptoms at time of presentation. The positive test was thought to be residual viral load. The patient had a very favorable outcome, likely related to multiple factors including her young age, lack of respiratory COVID-19 manifestations and plasma exchange peri-operatively. We recommend a full work-up for OLT in COVID-19 patients with uncomplicated disease according to standard of care, with careful interpretation of COVID-19 testing in patients presenting with conditions requiring urgent or emergent surgery as well as repeat testing even a few days after initial testing, as this could alter management.This technical evaluation aims to provide practice 'how to' guidelines for radiation therapists (RTs) when positioning a transperineal ultrasound (TPUS) probe during prostate radiotherapy. Recommendations and practical tips will be provided for the best practice in TPUS-guided workflow to obtain optimal ultrasound images for accurate interpretation and registration of the prostate gland. This will assist the RTs in making consistent and accurate clinical decision in an ultrasound-guided radiotherapy workflow for prostate treatment.     Ten deciduous teeth from six infants (ages at death between 21 and 239 days) were analyzed by light and scanning electron microscopy.

    Marked prism cross-striations and an abnormal wavy course of the prisms were recorded in pre- and postnatal enamel of all analyzed teeth. Single or multiple accentuated incremental lines were observed in prenatal enamel of nine teeth and in postnatal enamel of eight teeth. Accentuated Andresen lines and broader zones exhibiting an enhanced calcospheritic pattern were recorded in the pre- and postnatally formed dentin of nine teeth.

    The structural abnormalities in the pre- and postnatally formed enamel of the infants are considered indicative of chronic stress that negatively affected the activity of secretory ameloblasts. The structural aberrations (short-term) impacts of higher intensity superimposed on the chronic stress. Although not a single study has shown a detrimental effect on fetal or child development following exposure to ultrasound, the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety has justified the ban with the purely hypothetical possibility of an unidentified side effect. The first part of the following study shows which ultrasound-induced biophysical effects are known and which dose-dependent threshold values must be taken into consideration. In particular, the study focuses on the well-researched heat effect with some in vivo measurements in humans showing that the actual temperature increase is less than the theoretically calculated values.
