  • Robust mapping of relaxation parameters in ex vivo tissues is based on hydration and therefore requires control of the tissue treatment to ensure tissue integrity and consistent measurement conditions over long periods of time. One way to maintain the hydration of ex vivo tendon tissue is to immerse the samples in a buffer solution. To this end, various buffer solutions have been proposed; however, many appear to influence the tissue relaxation times, especially with prolonged exposure. In this work, ovine Achilles tendon tissue was used as a model to investigate the effect of immersion in phosphate-buffered saline (PBS) and the effects on the T1 and T2 * relaxation times. This retrospective study was conducted using data from the University of Florida and University of California-Davis databases between 2010 and 2017. Dogs were included if they underwent excision of an adrenal gland tumour with a maximal diameter ≤ 3 cm, without evidence of vascular invasion to any location as assessed via computed tomography. Fifty-one dogs met the inclusion criteria. The short-term survival rate of dogs undergoing adrenalectomy was 92.2%, and one-year disease-specific survival was 83.3%. Twenty-eight of 51 (54.9%) dogs were diagnosed with a malignancy. Minor complications were observed commonly intra-operatively and post-operatively. Major complications were observed in six dogs, and included sudden death, respiratory arrest, acute kidney injury, haemorrhage, hypotension and aspiration pneumonia. Short-term mortality occurred in four dogs. Sudden death and haemorrhage were the most common major complications leading to death. While adrenalectomy is sometimes controversial because of the high perioperative mortality rates previously reported, the results of this study support that adrenalectomy for small tumours with no vascular invasion can be performed with low risk. © 2020 John Wiley & Sons Ltd.Polyanion-type phosphate materials are highly promising cathode candidates for next-generation batteries due to their excellent structural stability during cycling; however, their poor conductivity has impeded their development. Limited research has examined how living arrangements are associated with cognitive function in older adults. This study aims to further our understanding of this association in community-dwelling older adults in a multi-ethnic Asian population. METHODS Data were obtained from a cross-sectional population survey of 2548 adults aged 60 and older with standardized instruments. Living arrangements were classified as living with adult children and grandchildren, living with adult children only, living with a spouse/partner only, living alone, living with other relatives, and living with non-relatives. RESULTS Cognitive function was significantly predicted by living arrangements among community-dwelling older adults. Multivariate linear regression analyses revealed that older adults in multigenerational family households had significantly poorer cognitive function than those living with a spouse/partner (β = 0.54, P  less then  0.02) and those living with non-relatives (β = 1.08, P  less then  0.02). This association was independent of the influence of age, gender, ethnicity, education, employment status, marital status, depression, disability, chronic health conditions, and self-reported health. CONCLUSION Older adults living in multigenerational households seem to be disadvantaged in their cognitive function. However, we cannot conclude this based on the evidence because of the cross-sectional nature of the data. Further research is needed to reasonably determine the relationship between living arrangements and cognitive function. Regardless, these findings add to the growing understanding of the complex relationship between living arrangements and cognition in older adults and could provide a basis to design effective strategies to delay cognitive decline in community-dwelling older adults. © 2020 Japanese Psychogeriatric Society.

  • Anaerobic digestion (AD) has been used for wastewater treatment and production of renewable energy or biogas. Propionate accumulation is one of the important problems leading to an unstable system and low methane production. Revealing propionate-degrading microbiome is necessary to gain a better knowledge for alleviation of the problem. Herein, we systematically investigated the propionate-degrading cultures enriched from various anaerobic sludge sources of agro-industrial wastewater treatment plants using 16S rRNA gene sequencing. Different microbial profiles were shown even though the methanogenic activities of all cultures were similar. Interestingly, non-classical propionate-degrading key players Smithella, Syntrophomonas, and Methanosaeta were observed as common prevalent taxa in our enriched cultures. Moreover, different hydrogenotrophic methanogens were found specifically to the different sludge sources. The enriched culture of high salinity sludge showed a distinct microbial profile compared to the others, containing mainly Thermovirga, Anaerolinaceae, Methanosaeta, Syntrophobactor, and Methanospirillum. Our microbiome analysis revealed different propionate-degrading community profiles via mainly the Smithella pathway and offers inside information for microbiome manipulation in AD systems to increase biogas production corresponding to their specific microbial communities.Catheter-related infections are a common worldwide health problem, highlighting the need for antimicrobial catheters. Here, antibacterial potential of graphene nanoplatelets (GNP) incorporated in the commonly used polymer for catheter manufacture-polyurethane (PU)-is investigated. Two strategies are explored melt-blending, producing a composite, and dip coating, where a composite layer is deposited on top of PU. GNP with different lateral sizes and oxidation degrees-GNP-M5, GNP-M15, GNP-M5ox, GNP-M15ox-are applied in both strategies, and the antimicrobial potential towards Staphylococcus epidermidis of GNP dispersions and GNP-containing PU evaluated. As dispersions, oxidized and smaller GNP powders (GNP-M5ox) inhibit 74% bacteria growth at 128 µg/mL. As surfaces, GNP exposure strongly impacts their antimicrobial profile GNP absence at the surface of composites yields no significant effects on bacteria, while by varying GNP PU ratio and GNP concentration, coatings enhance GNP exposure, depicting an antimicrobial profile. Oxidized GNP-containing coatings induce higher antibacterial effect than non-oxidized forms, particularly with smaller GNPox, where a homogeneous layer of fused platelets is formed on PU, leading to 70% reduction in bacterial adhesion and 70% bacterial death. This pioneering work unravels how to turn a polymer clinically used to produce catheters into an antimicrobial surface, crucial to reducing risk of infection associated with catheterization.Freeze-dried berry fruits are generally consumed as they are, whole and without peeling or cutting, as the conservation of their original shape and appearance is often desired for the final product. However, usually, berries are naturally wrapped by an outer skin that imparts a barrier to vapor flow during freeze-drying, causing berry busting. Photo-sequence, experimental, and theoretical methodologies were applied to evaluate the application of CO2 laser microperforations to blueberry skin. Under the same set of freeze-drying conditions, blueberries with and without perforations were processed. The results showed that the primary drying time was significantly reduced from 17 ± 0.9 h for nontreated berries to 13 ± 2.0 h when nine microperforations per berry fruit were made. We then evaluate the biological relevance of different fabrication methods proposed for Vasculature-on-Chip, we indicate their possibilities and limitations, and we assess which fabrication methods are capable of recapitulating the intrinsic complexity of the vasculature. This review illustrates the complexity involved in developing in vitro vasculature and provides an overview of fabrication methods for Vasculature-on-Chip in relation to the biological relevance of such methods.
    Anaerobic digestion (AD) has been used for wastewater treatment and production of renewable energy or biogas. Propionate accumulation is one of the important problems leading to an unstable system and low methane production. Revealing propionate-degrading microbiome is necessary to gain a better knowledge for alleviation of the problem. Herein, we systematically investigated the propionate-degrading cultures enriched from various anaerobic sludge sources of agro-industrial wastewater treatment plants using 16S rRNA gene sequencing. Different microbial profiles were shown even though the methanogenic activities of all cultures were similar. Interestingly, non-classical propionate-degrading key players Smithella, Syntrophomonas, and Methanosaeta were observed as common prevalent taxa in our enriched cultures. Moreover, different hydrogenotrophic methanogens were found specifically to the different sludge sources. The enriched culture of high salinity sludge showed a distinct microbial profile compared to the others, containing mainly Thermovirga, Anaerolinaceae, Methanosaeta, Syntrophobactor, and Methanospirillum. Our microbiome analysis revealed different propionate-degrading community profiles via mainly the Smithella pathway and offers inside information for microbiome manipulation in AD systems to increase biogas production corresponding to their specific microbial communities.Catheter-related infections are a common worldwide health problem, highlighting the need for antimicrobial catheters. Here, antibacterial potential of graphene nanoplatelets (GNP) incorporated in the commonly used polymer for catheter manufacture-polyurethane (PU)-is investigated. Two strategies are explored melt-blending, producing a composite, and dip coating, where a composite layer is deposited on top of PU. GNP with different lateral sizes and oxidation degrees-GNP-M5, GNP-M15, GNP-M5ox, GNP-M15ox-are applied in both strategies, and the antimicrobial potential towards Staphylococcus epidermidis of GNP dispersions and GNP-containing PU evaluated. As dispersions, oxidized and smaller GNP powders (GNP-M5ox) inhibit 74% bacteria growth at 128 µg/mL. As surfaces, GNP exposure strongly impacts their antimicrobial profile GNP absence at the surface of composites yields no significant effects on bacteria, while by varying GNP PU ratio and GNP concentration, coatings enhance GNP exposure, depicting an antimicrobial profile. Oxidized GNP-containing coatings induce higher antibacterial effect than non-oxidized forms, particularly with smaller GNPox, where a homogeneous layer of fused platelets is formed on PU, leading to 70% reduction in bacterial adhesion and 70% bacterial death.   • In persons with multiple sclerosis (MS), the Expanded Disability Status Scale (EDSS) is the criterion standard for assessing disability, but its in-person nature constrains patient participation in research and clinical assessments.

    The aim of this study was to develop and validate a scalable, electronic, unsupervised patient-reported EDSS (ePR-EDSS) that would capture MS-related disability across the spectrum of severity.

    We enrolled 136 adult MS patients, split into a preliminary testing Cohort 1 (
     = 50), and a validation Cohort 2 (
     = 86), which was evenly distributed across EDSS groups. Each patient completed an ePR-EDSS either immediately before or after a MS clinician's Neurostatus EDSS evaluation.

    In Cohort 2, mean age was 50.6 years (range = 26-80) and median EDSS was 3.5 (interquartile range (IQR) = [1.5, 5.5]). The ePR-EDSS and EDSS agreed within 1-point for 86% of examinations; kappa for agreement within 1-point was 0.85 (
     < 0.001). The correlation coefficient between the two measures was 0.91 (<0.001).

    The ePR-EDSS was highly correlated with EDSS, with good agreement even at lower EDSS levels. For clinical care, the ePR-EDSS could enable the longitudinal monitoring of a patient's disability. For research, it provides a valid and rapid measure across the entire spectrum of disability and permits broader participation with fewer in-person assessments.

Based on extensive ethnographic fieldwork in Guatemala, this article questions the representations of the legacy of violence between generations, as well as local indigenous representations of mourning through appropriated notions such as trauma and susto.Background The COVID-19 pandemic has driven most clinicians, from those practicing in small independent practices to those in large system, to adopt virtual care. However, individuals and organizations may lack the experience and skills that would be considered fundamental prerequisites to adopting telehealth in less urgent times. What are those skills? Before the pandemic, the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) convened national experts to identify and articulate a consensus set of critical telehealth skills for clinicians. Methods Through a structured review of the literature, followed by several rounds of review and refinement by committee and community members via a modified Delphi process, the committee came to consensus on a set of skills required by clinicians to provide quality care via telehealth. Conclusion The consensus set of telehealth skills presented in this paper, developed by the AAMC and national experts, can serve providers and health systems seeking to ensure that clinicians are prepared to meet the demand for care delivered via telehealth now and in the future.The burden of chronic liver disease (CLD) in India is high, particularly among middle-aged men, with nearly 220,000 deaths due to cirrhosis in 2017. CLD increases the risk of infection, severe disease (e.g. hepatitis A virus or HAV superinfection, acute-on-chronic liver failure, fulminant hepatic failure), and mortality. Hence, various countries recommend HAV vaccination for CLD patients. While historic Indian studies showed high seroprevalences of protective HAV antibodies among Indian adults with CLD, the most recent ones found that nearly 7% of CLD patients were susceptible to HAV infection. Studies in healthy individuals have shown that HAV infection in childhood is decreasing in India, resulting in an increasing population of adults susceptible to HAV infection. As patients with CLD are at increased risk of severe HAV infection, now may be the time to recommend HAV vaccination among people with CLD in India.Cancer remains one of the leading causes of death in humans, and new drug substances are therefore being developed. Thus, the anti-cancer activity of xanthene derivatives has become an important topic in the development of new and potent anti-cancer drug substances. Previously published novel series of xanthen-3-one and xanthen-1,8-dione derivatives have been synthesized in one of our laboratories and showed anti-proliferative activity in HeLa cancer cell lines. This series serves as a good basis to develop quantitative structure-activity relationship (QSAR), to study the relations between anti-proliferative activity and chemical structures. A QSAR model has been derived that relies only on two-dimensional molecular descriptors, providing mechanistic insight into the anti-proliferative activity of xanthene derivatives. The model is validated internally and externally and additionally with the set of inactive compounds of the original data, confirming model applicability for the design and discovery of novel xanthene derivatives.

  • This study evaluates the distribution of pesticides and assesses the ecological and human health risks associated with pesticide residues concentration in the Thamirabarani River, the only perennial river in Tamil Nadu, India. Observed a variation in the pesticide concentration in the water (not detected (ND)-31.69 μg/L), sediments (ND-14.77 μg/kg), and fish (0.02-26.05 μg/kg). Endosulfan, aldrin, and endrin were the predominant organochlorine pesticides present in water, sediments, and fish. The average concentration of pesticides (except endosulfan) in water and sediments was found to be below the acceptable threshold as per the water and sediment quality guidelines, posing no ecological hazard to aquatic organisms. The calculated risk quotient and toxic unit (0.1 > TU/RQ ≤ 1) represent low-to-medium acute and chronic toxicity to the aquatic organisms inhabiting the river basin. The average concentration of pesticides in fish (Labeorohita) was also below the maximum residual limits set by the Codex Alimentarius Commission (CAC). However, the calculated daily intakes of endosulfan, aldrin, and endrin were above the CAC-acceptable daily intake guidelines. The human health risk assessment showed that children and adults exposed to pesticides in water and sediments through ingestion and dermal contact could have higher cancer risks (CR > 10-4) than inhalation. This study recommends implementing effective and routine pollution management schemes to avoid pesticide threats to aquatic and human health.The aim of the study was to evaluate the radiation levels, radiological doses and excess lifetime cancer risk possessed by the urban soils that were collected from the vicinity of the exclusive mining and excavation centers of Dera Ghazi Khan. The high purity germanium detector was utilized for assessment of naturally occurring radionuclides (NORMs) in soil and results showed that the average activity concentrations of 226Ra, 232Th, and 40K (37 Bq/kg, 43.07 Bq/kg, 737 Bq/kg respectively) surpassed the world's average documented values (35 Bq/kg, 30 Bq/kg, and 400 Bq/kg respectively). Moreover, the average values of radiological hazards assessment like radium equivalent, internal and external hazard indices, absorbed dose rate, annual gonadal dose equivalent and excess lifetime cancer risk were 155.70 (Bq/kg), 0.4, 0.5, 73.96 (nGy/h) 90.73 (μSv/y), 476.24 (μSv/y) and 0.31(10-3) respectively. The data acquired was analyzed using descriptive statistics, cluster analysis and principal component analysis. ArcGIS (10.5) software was utilized for developing maps of radionuclide's concentration for the study area. The nanoglass paste self-hardened via networks of precipitated nano-islands from leached ions to exhibit ultrahigh surface area (~300 m2/g), amenable to fill tunable defects with active biomolecular interactions. Also, the nanoglass paste could release multiple ions (silicate, calcium, and copper) at therapeutically relevant doses and sustainably (for days to weeks), implying possible roles in surrounding cells/tissues as a therapeutic-ions reservoir.

The calculated risk quotient and toxic unit (0.1 > TU/RQ ≤ 1) represent low-to-medium acute and chronic toxicity to the aquatic organisms inhabiting the river basin.   • Scapulohumeral periarthritis is a disease that seriously affects human daily work and life, and greatly reduces peoples quality of life and affects human health all over the world. Now, many studies have shown that acupuncture and rehabilitation have a significant effect on scapulohumeral periarthritis. In this study, network meta-analysis was used to analyze and compare the clinical efficacy and difference of different acupuncture treatments on scapulohumeral periarthritis.

    All patients were diagnosed as scapulohumeral periarthritis by randomized controlled trial. Computer searches will be conducted on CNKI, Wan-Fang databases, VIP, CBM, Pubmed, Cochrane library, Embase, Web of Science. The retrieval period is from the date of database establishment to September 8, 2020. To avoid omissions, we will manually retrieve relevant references and conference papers. However, our understanding about the role of social support in the link, which is likely culture-dependent, is quite limited. This study aimed to determine the mediating effect of social support on the association between life events and depression in adolescents in Chongqing China.A total of 1512 adolescents aged 12 to 17 years old in Chongqing of China were selected using a stratified cluster sampling strategy.     To evaluate the effects of BCI-FES on postural control and gait performance in individuals with chronic hemiparetic stroke.

    A total of 25 individuals with chronic hemiparetic stroke (13 individuals received BCI-FES and 12 individuals received functional electrical stimulation [FES]). The BCI-FES group received BCI-FES on the tibialis anterior muscle on the more-affected side for 30 minutes per session, 3 times per week for 5 weeks. The FES group received FES using the same methodology for the same periods. This study used the Mann-Whitney test to compare the two groups before and after training.

    Lung cancer is a leading cause of cancer-related deaths. Smoking is major risk factor for initial and subsequent lung cancer especially in active smokers. Treatment of subsequent lung cancer depends on whether it is synchronous or metachronous. We report a rare case of triple metachronous lung cancer and review of literature of patients with triple metachronous cancers. This will be the second case reported of triple metachronous lung cancer.

    Studies on the incidence of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) among immigrant children and adolescents is limited and results are mixed. The aim of this study was to compare the ADHD risk between first- and second-generation immigrants aged 4-16years and their native peers in Sweden.

    This was an open nationwide retrospective cohort study. We included 1,902,526 native and 805,450 children and adolescents with an immigrant background, born 1987-2010, and aged 4-16years at baseline. We identified participants using national population data and participants were observed until they received an ADHD diagnosis in the National Patient Register, turned 18years, migrated, died, or until the end of the study, whichever came first. ADHD risks were adjusted for birth year and age and maternal income at baseline.

    For both males and females, the ADHD risk was lower among most immigrant groups. However, the combination of a Swedish-born mother and foreign-born father was associated with an increased risk of ADHD. The ADHD risk varied substantially between immigrants from different regions of the world. For example, immigrants from other Scandinavian countries, North America, and Latin America and the Caribbean had higher rates of ADHD compared with natives.

    Future research should examine the underlying factors behind the differences in ADHD risks between certain immigrant subgroups and natives, such as family structure, cultural and language barriers and potential differences in health care utilization among immigrant families.

Recently, the cross-talk between insulin-secreting-β-cells and various organs has sparked **** interest. SerpinB1 emerged as a novel hepatokine inducing β-cell proliferation. However, its role in type-2-DM (T2DM) patients has not been adequately studied. This study was designed to investigate its circulating levels in subjects with/without T2DM, and to study its association with β-cell function, as well as various glycemic-control and lipid-profile parameters. Anthropometric data and biochemical markers including fasting plasma glucose (FPG), HbA1C % and lipid profile parameters were measured in 55 T2DM patients, as well as 30 healthy nondiabetic subjects. Serum serpinB1, insulin and C-peptide levels were measured by ELISA. The homeostasis model assessment of both β-cell function (HOMA2-β%) and insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) were calculated. SerpinB1 levels were found to be significantly lower in T2DM patients 0.7 (0.2-12.4) ng/mL, compared to nondiabetic subjects 1.2 (0.94-24) ng/mL, P less then 0.001, regardless of glycemic control, obesity, or insulin resistance. Additionally, serpinB1 levels were found to be positively associated with C-peptide, HOMA2-β% in all subjects; and BMI only in non-DM subjects; while negatively associated with FPG, HbA1C% and lipid-profile parameters. Higher serum serpinB1 levels were found to be associated with lower susceptibility for T2DM. Conclusively, serpinB1 is associated with various aspects of β-cell dysfunction, glycemic-control, and dyslipidemia with a possible role in β-cell compensation in obese nondiabetic subjects.     Craniotomies/craniostomies have been categorized as aerosol-generating procedures and are presumed to spread coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). However, the presence of severe acute respiratory distress syndrome coronavirus 2 virus in the generated bone dust has never been proved. Our objective is to evaluate the presence of virus in the bone dust (aerosol) generated during emergency neurosurgical procedures performed on patients with active COVID-19. This would determine the true risk of disease transmission during the surgery.

Anthropometric data and biochemical markers including fasting plasma glucose (FPG), HbA1C % and lipid profile parameters were measured in 55 T2DM patients, as well as 30 healthy nondiabetic subjects. Serum serpinB1, insulin and C-peptide levels were measured by ELISA. The homeostasis model assessment of both β-cell function (HOMA2-β%) and insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) were calculated. SerpinB1 levels were found to be significantly lower in T2DM patients 0.7 (0.2-12.4) ng/mL, compared to nondiabetic subjects 1.2 (0.94-24) ng/mL, P less then 0.001, regardless of glycemic control, obesity, or insulin resistance. Additionally, serpinB1 levels were found to be positively associated with C-peptide, HOMA2-β% in all subjects; and BMI only in non-DM subjects; while negatively associated with FPG, HbA1C% and lipid-profile parameters. Higher serum serpinB1 levels were found to be associated with lower susceptibility for T2DM. Conclusively, serpinB1 is associated with various aspects of β-cell dysfunction, glycemic-control, and dyslipidemia with a possible role in β-cell compensation in obese nondiabetic subjects. The results of the current study shed lights on potential novel roles of serpinB1 in T2DM besides its action as an inducer for β-cell proliferation. Craniotomies/craniostomies have been categorized as aerosol-generating procedures and are presumed to spread coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). However, the presence of severe acute respiratory distress syndrome coronavirus 2 virus in the generated bone dust has never been proved. Our objective is to evaluate the presence of virus in the bone dust (aerosol) generated during emergency neurosurgical procedures performed on patients with active COVID-19. This would determine the true risk of disease transmission during the surgery. The entire surgical team was observed for any symptoms related to COVID-19 for 14 days following surgery. Nine patients had moderate viral load in their nasopharyngeal cavity, as detected on reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction. None of the samples of bone dust from these 10 patients tested positive. Mucosal scrapping obtained in 1 patient in which mastoid air cells were inadvertently opened tested negative as well. No health workers from the operating room developed COVID-19-related symptoms. The bone dust generated during craniotomy/stomy of active patients does not contain the virus. The procedure on an active patient is unlikely to spread the disease. However, a study with larger cohort would be confirmatory.   • Bone morphogenetic protein 2 (BMP2)-induced heterotopic bone formation (HBF) starts synchronously from zero upon BMP2 induction, which is advantageous for lineage tracking. The studies reported here in GLAST-CreErt2 tdTomato red (TR)floxSTOPflox **** during BMP2-induced HBF show 78.8 ± 11.6% of chondrocytes and 86.5 ± 1.9% of osteoblasts are TR+ after approximately 1 week. Clustering after single-cell RNAseq resulted in nine cell types, and analysis revealed one as a highly replicating stem-like cell (RSC). Pseudotiming suggested that the RSC transitions to a mesenchymal stem-like cell that simultaneously expresses multiple osteoblast and chondrocyte transcripts (chondro-osseous progenitor [COP]). RSCs and COPs were isolated using flow cytometry for unique surface markers. Isolated RSCs (GLAST-TR+ Hmmr+ Cd200- ) and COPs (GLAST-TR+ Cd200+ Hmmr- ) were injected into the muscle of **** undergoing HBF. Approximately 9% of the cells in heterotopic bone (HB) in **** receiving RSCs were GLAST-TR+ , compared with less than 0.5% of the cells in **** receiving COPs, suggesting that RSCs are many times more potent than COPs. Analysis of donor-derived TR+ RSCs isolated from the engrafted HB showed approximately 50% were COPs and 45% were other cells, presumably mature bone cells, confirming the early nature of the RSCs. We next isolated RSCs from these **** (approximately 300) and injected them into a second animal, with similar findings upon analysis of HBF. Unlike other methodology, single cell RNAseq has the ability to detect rare cell populations such as RSCs. The fact that RSCs can be injected into **** and differentiate suggests their potential utility for tissue regeneration.The scope of the impact of the Coronavirus disease 19 (COVID-19) pandemic on living donor kidney transplantation (LDKT) practices across the world is not well-defined. We received survey responses from 204 transplant centers internationally from May to June 2020 regarding the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on LDKT practices. Respondents represented 16 countries on five continents. Overall, 75% of responding centers reported that LDKT surgery was on hold (from 67% of North American centers to 91% of European centers). The majority (59%) of centers reported that new donor evaluations were stopped (from 46% of North American centers to 86% of European centers), with additional 23% of centers reporting important decrease in evaluations. Only 10% of centers reported slight variations on their evaluations. For the centers that continued donor evaluations, 40% performed in-person visits, 68% by video, and 42% by telephone. Center concerns for donor (82%) and recipient (76%) safety were the leading barriers to LDKT during the pandemic, followed by patients concerns (48%), and government restrictions (46%). European centers reported more barriers related to staff limitations while North and Latin American centers were more concerned with testing capacity and insufficient resources including protective equipment. As LDKT resumes, 96% of the programs intend to screen donor and recipient pairs for coronavirus infection, most of them with polymerase chain reaction testing of nasopharyngeal swab samples. The COVID-19 pandemic has had broad impact on all aspects of LDKT practice.     Congenital afibrinogenemia is a severe bleeding disorder, sometimes manifesting as thrombosis and/or pregnancy complications. Intracranial haemorrhage (ICH) constitutes the major cause of death in this disease.

    We present the case of a male patient with congenital afibrinogenemia, who presented with recurrent intracranial hemorrhages, despite prophylactic fibrinogen substitution. We also review the literature for the risk of intracranial hemorrhages in afibrinogenemia.
