  • In this review, we survey the current literature on MONW and cancer, summarize pathophysiology and oncogenic mechanisms, highlight potential strategies for diagnosis and treatment, and suggest directions for future research.

    A total of 5522 (17%) children were born to mothers exposed to antibiotics during pregnancy. In adjusted analyses, children born to exposed mothers had higher odds of asthma (OR 1.14, 95% CI 1.05 to 1.24). There was no association with antibiotic exposure in the first trimester (OR 1.02, 95% CI 0.83 to 1.26), but higher odds were observed for antibiotic exposure in the second to third trimester (OR 1.17, 95% CI 1.06 to 1.28), compared with unexposed children. The overall association between antibiotics during pregnancy and childhood asthma was only observed in vaginally born children (OR 1.17, 95% CI 1.07 to 1.28) but not in caesarean section born children (planned caesarean section OR 0.95, 95% CI 0.66 to 1.37; caesarean emergency OR 0.96, 95% CI 0.73 to 1.28). In exposed vaginally born children, the odds for childhood asthma requiring treatment during the preceding year were 34% higher (OR 1.34, 95% CI 1.21 to 1.49), compared with unexposed vaginally born children.

However, lack of useful genetic markers for in vivo manipulations hinders elucidation of the DCN contribution to tinnitus pathophysiology. This work assesses whether adeno-associated viral vectors (AAV) containing the calcium/calmodulin-dependent protein kinase 2α (CaMKIIα) promoter and a mouse line of nicotinic acetylcholine receptor α2 subunit (Chrna2)-Cre can target specific DCN populations. We found that CaMKIIα cannot be used to target excitatory fusiform DCN neurons as labeled cells showed diverse morphology indicating they belong to different classes of DCN neurons. Light stimulation after driving Channelrhodopsin2 (ChR2) by the CaMKIIα promoter generated spikes in some units but firing rate decreased when light stimulation coincided with sound. Expression and activation of CaMKIIα-eArchaerhodopsin3.0 in the DCN produced inhibition in some units but sound-driven spikes were delayed by concomitant light stimulation. We explored the existence of Cre+ cells in the DCN of Chrna2-Cre **** by hydrogel embedding technique (CLARITY). There were almost no Cre+ cell bodies in the DCN; however, we identified profuse projections arising from the ventral cochlear nucleus (VCN). Anterograde labeling in the VCN revealed projections to the ipsilateral superior olive and contralateral medial nucleus of the trapezoid body (MNTB; bushy cells), and a second bundle terminating in the DCN, suggesting the latter to be excitatory Chrna2+ T-stellate cells. Exciting Chrna2+ cells increased DCN firing. This work shows that cortical molecular tools may be useful for manipulating the DCN especially for tinnitus studies.While influenza and other respiratory pathogens cause significant morbidity and mortality, the community-based burden of these infections remains incompletely understood. The development of novel methods to detect respiratory infections is essential for mitigating epidemics and developing pandemic-preparedness infrastructure. From October 2019 to March 2020, we conducted a home-based cross-sectional study in the greater Seattle, WA, area, utilizing electronic consent and data collection instruments. Participants received nasal swab collection kits via rapid delivery within 24 hours of self-reporting respiratory symptoms. Samples were returned to the laboratory and were screened for 26 respiratory pathogens and a housekeeping gene. Participant data were recorded via online survey at the time of sample collection and 1 week later. Of the 4,572 consented participants, 4,359 (95.3%) received a home swab kit and 3,648 (83.7%) returned a nasal specimen for respiratory pathogen screening. The 3,638 testable samples had a mean RNase P relative cycle threshold (Crt ) value of 19.0 (SD, 3.4), and 1,232 (33.9%) samples had positive results for one or more pathogens, including 645 (17.7%) influenza-positive specimens. Among the testable samples, the median time between shipment of the home swab kit and completion of laboratory testing was 8.0 days (interquartile range [IQR], 7.0 to 14.0). A single adverse event occurred and did not cause long-term effects or require medical attention. Home-based surveillance using online participant enrollment and specimen self-collection is a safe and feasible method for community-level monitoring of influenza and other respiratory pathogens, which can readily be adapted for use during pandemics.Many free-living and pathogenic enterobacteria secrete biofilm-promoting cellulose using a multicomponent, envelope-embedded Bcs secretion system under the control of intracellular second messenger c-di-GMP.   • Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) is proved to be the main pathogenic agent of various diseases, including chronic gastritis, gastric ulcer, duodenal ulcer, and gastric cancer. In addition, chronic cholecystitis and cholelithiasis are common worldwide, which are supposed to increase the total mortality of patients. Epidemiologic evidence on the relationship between H. pylori infection of the gallbladder and chronic cholecystitis/cholelithiasis still remains unclear. We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of overall studies to investigate the relationship between H. pylori infection of the gallbladder and chronic cholecystitis/cholelithiasis. Two researchers searched PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane Library databases to obtain all related and eligible studies published before July 2020. The pooled odds ratios (ORs) and corresponding 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated by the random-effects model. Subgroup analysis, heterogeneity, publication bias, and sensitivity analysis were also conducted. Twenty studies were included in the meta-analysis, involving 1735 participants and 1197 patients with chronic cholecystitis/cholelithiasis. Helicobacter species infection of the gallbladder was positively correlated with increased risk of chronic cholecystitis and cholelithiasis, especially H. pylori (OR = 3.05; 95% CI, 1.81-5.14; I2 = 23.5%). Besides, country-based subgroup analysis also showed a positive correlation between the gallbladder H. pylori positivity and chronic cholecystitis/cholelithiasis risk. For Asian and non-Asian country studies, the ORs were 4.30 (95% CI, 1.76-10.50; I2 = 37.4%) and 2.13 (95% CI, 1.23-3.70; I2 = 0.0%), respectively. The association was more obvious using the bile sample and urease gene primer. In conclusion, this meta-analysis provided evidence that there is a positive correlation between H. pylori infection in the gallbladder and increased risk of chronic cholecystitis and cholelithiasis.
    To explore the clinical characteristics of reactivation of hepatitis B virus (HBV) in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) after transcatheter arterial chemoembolization (TACE). The pathological correlation of prognosis and hepatitis B virus reactivation has been given detailed analyses in our research.

This association is not surprising as NAFLD has been considered a part of the metabolic syndrome and has been related to numerous CVD risk factors, namely, insulin resistance, abdominal obesity, dyslipidemia, hyperuricemia, chronic kidney disease, and type 2 diabetes. Moreover, both NAFLD and CVD present similar pathophysiological mechanisms, such as increased visceral adiposity, altered lipid metabolism, increased oxidative stress, and systemic inflammation that could explain their association. Whether NAFLD increases the risk for CVD or these diagnostic entities represent distinct manifestations of the metabolic syndrome has not yet been clarified. This review focuses on the relation between NAFLD and the spectrum of CVD, considering the pathophysiological mechanisms, risk factors, current evidence, and future directions.Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) has a rising prevalence worldwide. In both sexes, the "Quasi-Western Pattern" and the "Sugar and Fast foods Pattern" were positively associated with the risk of ***. Multiple logistic regressions was used to assess the association between dietary patterns and the risk of CAD. Results Three major dietary patterns were identified the "Quasi-Western Pattern" was characterized by higher intakes of sweets and desserts, snacks, legumes, honey or jam, ketchup, mayonnaise, yellow vegetables, potatoes, red meat, refined grains; the "Sugar and Fast foods Pattern" was characterized by higher intakes of sugar, soft drinks, fast foods, high-fat dairy, hydrogenated fats, and the "Quasi-Mediterranean Pattern" was characterized by higher intakes of fruits, cruciferous vegetables, green leafy vegetables, other vegetables, nuts, coffee. In both sexes, the "Quasi-Western Pattern" and the "Sugar and Fast foods Pattern" were positively associated with the risk of CAD. For "Quasi-Western Pattern", adjusted-ORs were (OR 1.35, 95% CI 0.99-1.83, P = 0.05) and (OR 1.38, 95% CI 1.03-1.83, P = 0.03)for men and women respectively.   • Aberrant splicing is a major cause of rare diseases. However, its prediction from genome sequence alone remains in most cases inconclusive. Recently, RNA sequencing has proven to be an effective complementary avenue to detect aberrant splicing. Here, we develop FRASER, an algorithm to detect aberrant splicing from RNA sequencing data. Unlike existing methods, FRASER captures not only alternative splicing but also intron retention events. Combining advantageous features of both battery-powered and battery-free designs, this device system enables seamless full implantation into animals, reliable ubiquitous operation, and intervention-free wireless charging, all of which are desired for chronic in vivo optogenetics. Successful demonstration of the unique capabilities of this device in freely behaving rats forecasts its broad and practical utilities in various neuroscience research and clinical applications.CD4 T follicular helper (Tfh) cells are important for the generation of durable and specific humoral protection against viral infections. The degree to which SARS-CoV-2 infection generates Tfh cells and stimulates the germinal center (GC) response is an important question as we investigate vaccine induced immunity against COVID-19. Here, we report that SARS-CoV-2 infection in rhesus macaques, either infused with convalescent plasma, normal plasma, or receiving no infusion, resulted in transient accumulation of pro-inflammatory monocytes and proliferating Tfh cells with a Th1 profile in peripheral blood. CD4 helper cell responses skewed predominantly toward a Th1 response in blood, lung, and lymph nodes. SARS-CoV-2 Infection induced GC Tfh cells specific for the SARS-CoV-2 spike and nucleocapsid proteins, and a corresponding early appearance of antiviral serum IgG antibodies. Collectively, the data show induction of GC responses in a rhesus model of mild COVID-19.There is need for effective and affordable vaccines against SARS-CoV-2 to tackle the ongoing pandemic. We evaluate antibody quality using ACE2 blocking and neutralisation of cell infection by pseudovirus or wild-type SARS-CoV-2. Using competition assays with a monoclonal antibody panel, we show that RBD-SpyVLP induces a polyclonal antibody response that recognises key epitopes on the RBD, reducing the likelihood of selecting neutralisation-escape mutants. Moreover, RBD-SpyVLP is thermostable and can be lyophilised without losing immunogenicity, to facilitate global distribution and reduce cold-chain dependence. The data suggests that RBD-SpyVLP provides strong potential to address clinical and logistic challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic.Homozygosity mapping is a powerful method for identifying mutations in patients with recessive conditions, especially in consanguineous families or isolated populations. Following a training step on WES data from 26 consanguineous families and a validation procedure on a matched cohort, our method shows higher overall performances when compared with eight existing tools. Performance examples include SIMPLER-direct stochastic optical reconstruction microscopy images of the nuclear pore complex with sub-20 nm axial localization precision and visualization of microtubule cross-sections through SIMPLER-DNA points accumulation for imaging in nanoscale topography with sub-10 nm axial localization precision.

  • A 49-year-old man with chronic hepatitis B receiving treatment with entecavir visited a hospital with a complaint of abdominal pain. Computed tomography (CT) showed 2 liver tumors, each measuring 1cm in diameter, 1 in segment 7 and 1 in segment 4. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) showed a hypervascular tumor in segment 7 that appeared in a site different from that seen on CT. The liver tumor in segment 4 was not detected by MRI. Two months later, MRI showed a new liver tumor in segment 7/6 and that the liver tumor in segment 7 had increased to 2cm in diameter;blood tests showed eosinophilia. Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay showed a high serum Toxocara antibody. The patient was diagnosed as having hepatic toxocariasis and was treated with albendazole for 8 weeks. After treatment, MRI showed that the liver tumors disappeared. In this study, we evaluated the effectiveness of the SGLT2 inhibitor, dapagliflozin, by using a rat model of type 1 diabetes. Type 1 diabetes was induced by a single intraperitoneal injection of 60 mg/kg streptozotocin (STZ). The STZ-induced rats showed marked hyperglycemia and other metabolic abnormalities. We clarified the hypoglycemic effect of the combination treatment of dapagliflozin with a low dose of insulin compared with dapagliflozin alone and insulin alone in 3-week and 8-week studies. Our results showed that dapagliflozin in combination with a low dose of insulin significantly lowered hyperglycemia, hypercholesterolemia, and hypertriglyceridemia. Furthermore, the antioxidant status and body weight were improved.
    A 49-year-old man with chronic hepatitis B receiving treatment with entecavir visited a hospital with a complaint of abdominal pain. Computed tomography (CT) showed 2 liver tumors, each measuring 1cm in diameter, 1 in segment 7 and 1 in segment 4. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) showed a hypervascular tumor in segment 7 that appeared in a site different from that seen on CT. The liver tumor in segment 4 was not detected by MRI. Two months later, MRI showed a new liver tumor in segment 7/6 and that the liver tumor in segment 7 had increased to 2cm in diameter;blood tests showed eosinophilia. Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay showed a high serum Toxocara antibody. The patient was diagnosed as having hepatic toxocariasis and was treated with albendazole for 8 weeks. After treatment, MRI showed that the liver tumors disappeared. Eosinophilia, multiple lesions, and the disappearance of the tumors were characteristic findings of visceral larva migrans.A man in his 40s visited a facility with the chief complaint of abdominal pain;liver dysfunction was detected, and consequently, he was referred to our hospital for further examinations.   • This method provides a convenient platform for studying the functional effects of the isomers of unsaturated lipids in pathological tissues.Metal thiophosphates are a large family of compounds that received far less attention than conventional chalcogenides. Recently, however, metal thiophosphates arouse research interest in regard of energy harvesting and conversion due to their structural and chemical diversity. Nevertheless, there remain many unexplored metal thiophosphates. Here, we performed a comprehensive investigation on the electronic and optoelectronic properties of a series of metal thiophosphates using first-principles calculations and identified several highly promising compounds as p-type transparent conductors, photovoltaic absorbers, and single visible-light-driven photocatalysts for water splitting. Our investigation reveals the intrinsic features of a series of typical metal thiophosphates, identifies their new optoelectronic applications, and validates that metal thiophosphates are promising materials deserving exploration.Objective To summarize the clinical characteristics of an early death in patients with de novo acute promyelocytic leukemia (APL) , analyze the risk factors and direct causes of early death, and perform survival analysis. Methods The clinical data of 368 patients with de novo APL in three centers (First Affiliated Hospital of Soochow University, Soochow Guangci Hospital, and Soochow Hopes Hospital of Hematology) during January 2011-December 2017 were retrospectively analyzed. The clinical characteristics of patients who suffered hemorrhagic early death and non-hemorrhagic early death were compared. The risk factors for early death, survival, and prognosis of patients with APL were analyzed. Results Among the 368 de novo APL patients, 31 died early with an early mortality rate of 8.4%. The median time from diagnosis to death was 7 (0-29) d. On comparison of the clinical characteristics of patients with early death and non-early death and subsequent multivariate analysis using a logistic regression model, it wahen 50 years old was 79.3% vs 94.2%, P=0.000; the 2-year DFS rate was 92.3% vs 98.1%, P=0.023. The respective 2-year OS rates of high-risk and non-high-risk patients were 77.3% and 96.7% (P=0.000) and the respective 2-year DFS rates were 94.0% and 98.4% (P=0.139) . Conclusion Age and WBC are independent prognostic factors for early death. Results A total of 280 patients were collected. The median dasatinib treatment time was 26 (1-142) months. Ninety (32.1%) patients developed PE, including 40 (44.4%) in grade 1, 44 (48.9%) in grade 2, and 6 (6.7%) in grade 3. The incidence of PE increased gradually with the prolongation of treatment. The multivariate analysis showed that increasing age (every 10 years, HR=1.6; P less then 0.001) , advanced phase when starting dasatinib therapy (HR=2.2; P=0.008) , and cardiovascular comorbidity (ies) (HR=1.9; P=0.018) were significantly associated with developing PE. The advanced phase when starting dasatinib therapy (HR=3.4; P=0.001) , interval from diagnosis to taking TKI for ≤6 months (HR=2.2; P=0.015) , and dose less then 100 mg/d when PE was found (HR=3.1; P=0.001) were associated with more severe PE. PE relieved or disappeared after intervention in half of the patients. Among 60 patients with symptoms of cough, chest tightness, and shortness of breath, 49 underwent ultrasonic cardiography; 8 (16.3%) had high probability of PAH, approximately 3.5% in all patients; and 6 (75.0%) of them had PE. PAH was reversible. There was no difference in the incidences of PE and PAH between branded and Chinese generic dasatinib. Conclusion PE is a common dasatinib-related pulmonary adverse event, and PAH is rare in patients with CML. Results A total of 10 patients in this family were diagnosed with acute leukemia, including 4 males and 6 females, with a median age of 9 (3-48) years. Of the 10 patients, six died. Among them, 4 patients did not receive treatment, 1 patient survived 3 years after chemotherapy and died of relapse, and one patient died 2 years after receiving traditional Chinese medicine and supportive treatment. Four patients are alive. One patient has survived 15 years through chemotherapy, and three patients have survived with chemotherapy combined with hematopoietic stem cell transplantation, and the survival time was 6, 9, and 28 months at the end of follow-up.

  • Herein, we present the current understanding, gaps in knowledge and future directions of research addressing these CAR T cell-related outcomes. This systematic framework to study extended toxicities and optimization strategies will facilitate the translation of acquired experience and knowledge for optimal application of CAR T cell therapies.A series of thielavins I, V, and Q (1-3) and the previously undescribed thielavin Z8 (4) were isolated from cultures of a fungal Shiraia-like sp. (strain MSX60519) that were grown under a suite of media and light conditions, with enhanced biosynthesis noted using rice as a substrate with 1212 h lightdark cycles. Conversely, oatmeal medium and continuous white light-emitting diode light exposure negatively affected the production of these compounds, at least by strain MSX60519. The structure of 4 was determined using NMR spectroscopic data and mass fragmentation patterns. Of note, the utility of LR-HSQMBC and NOESY NMR experiments in the structural elucidation of these hydrogen-deficient natural products was demonstrated. Compounds 1-4 exhibited cytotoxic activity at the micromolar level against human breast, ovarian, and melanoma cancer cell lines.Synthetic mimics of antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) is a promising class of molecules for a variety of antimicrobial applications. Several hurdles must be passed before effective systemic infection therapies with AMPs can be achieved, but the path to effective topical treatment of skin, nail, and soft tissue infections appears less challenging to navigate. Skin and soft tissue infection is closely coupled to the emergence of antibiotic resistance and represents a major burden to the healthcare system. The present study evaluates the promising synthetic cationic AMP mimic, AMC-109, for treatment of skin infections in vivo. The compound is evaluated both in impregnated cotton wound dressings and in a gel formulation against skin infections caused by Staphylococcus aureus and methicillin resistant S. aureus. Both the ability to prevent colonization and formation of an infection, as well as eradicate an ongoing infection in vivo with a high bacterial load, were evaluated. The present work demonstrates that AMC-109 displays a significantly higher antibacterial activity with up to a seven-log reduction in bacterial loads compared to current clinical standard therapy; Altargo cream (1% retapamulin) and Fucidin cream (2% fusidic acid) in the in vivo wound models. It is thus concluded that AMC-109 represents a promising entry in the development of new and effective remedies for various skin infections.A longstanding debate has surrounded the role of the motor system in speech perception, but progress in this area has been limited by tasks that only examine isolated syllables and conflate decision-making with perception. Using an adaptive task that temporally isolates perception from decision-making, we examined an EEG signature of motor activity (sensorimotor μ/beta suppression) during the perception of auditory phonemes, auditory words, audiovisual words, and environmental sounds while holding difficulty constant at two levels (Easy/Hard). Results revealed left-lateralized sensorimotor μ/beta suppression that was related to perception of speech but not environmental sounds. Audiovisual word and phoneme stimuli showed enhanced left sensorimotor μ/beta suppression for correct relative to incorrect trials, while auditory word stimuli showed enhanced suppression for incorrect trials. Our results demonstrate that motor involvement in perception is left-lateralized, is specific to speech stimuli, and it not simply the result of domain-general processes. These results provide evidence for an interactive network for speech perception in which dorsal stream motor areas are dynamically engaged during the perception of speech depending on the characteristics of the speech signal. Crucially, this motor engagement has different effects on the perceptual outcome depending on the lexicality and modality of the speech stimulus.Correlational studies of humans suggest that exposure to early life stress has long-term effects on neural circuits involved in vulnerability and resilience to mental health disorders. The present study evaluates the promising synthetic cationic AMP mimic, AMC-109, for treatment of skin infections in vivo. The compound is evaluated both in impregnated cotton wound dressings and in a gel formulation against skin infections caused by Staphylococcus aureus and methicillin resistant S. aureus. Both the ability to prevent colonization and formation of an infection, as well as eradicate an ongoing infection in vivo with a high bacterial load, were evaluated. Results revealed left-lateralized sensorimotor μ/beta suppression that was related to perception of speech but not environmental sounds. Audiovisual word and phoneme stimuli showed enhanced left sensorimotor μ/beta suppression for correct relative to incorrect trials, while auditory word stimuli showed enhanced suppression for incorrect trials. Our results demonstrate that motor involvement in perception is left-lateralized, is specific to speech stimuli, and it not simply the result of domain-general processes. These results provide evidence for an interactive network for speech perception in which dorsal stream motor areas are dynamically engaged during the perception of speech depending on the characteristics of the speech signal. We demonstrate the possibility to create 3D polymer structures of highly complex geometries and spatially controlled pore sizes from 10 nm to 1000 µm. Produced hierarchical polymers combining nanoporosity with micrometer-sized pores demonstrate improved adsorption performance due to better pore accessibility and favored cell adhesion and growth for 3D cell culture due to surface porosity. Simulation results reveal that plastic deformation proceeds by the nucleation of partial dislocations from GBs, which then grow with further loading by bowing into the bulk crystals leaving behind stacking faults. Variations in the nucleation stress exist as function of GB character, defined in this work by the twist angle. We find that the same nanomaterial (CaF2) can grow by either a particle-coalescence or classical-growth mechanism, as regulated by the capping ligand, resulting in different crystallographic properties and functional features of the fabricated NC.   • Recurrent liposarcoma, previously confirmed as lipoma, has rarely been reported. However, the risk factors for recurrence and the correlation between benign lipoma and malignant liposarcoma remain unclear. In this case study, we suggest a precise diagnostic strategy to minimize recurrence and malignant transformation.

    A 60-year-old male patient with a history of left chest wall swelling without any symptoms underwent excisional surgery, and the mass was confirmed as a benign lipoma in 2015. In 2019, the patient returned to the hospital with symptoms of a palpable mass on the left chest wall.

    The mass was considered a recurrent lipomatous tumor with the possibility of malignant transformation. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed a deep-seated, septate, intramuscular, irregular margin, and large lipomatous tumor invading the ribs, pleura, and adjacent muscle, suggestive of malignancy. The MRI findings were similar to those 4 years ago, except for margin irregularity and invasion to adjacent tissue.

    Wide en bloc excisions encompassing the 5th to 7th ribs, pleura, and adjacent muscle were followed by reconstruction with a pedicled latissimus dorsi muscle flap.

    The recurrent large lipomatous tumor was confirmed as well-differentiated liposarcomas through histological and MDM2-FISH immunohistochemical staining. Postoperatively, follow-up visits continued for 1.5 years without recurrence.

    We suggest that deep-seated, septate, and giant lipomatous tumors should be considered as risk factors for recurrence with the possibility of malignancy and misdiagnosis. It is important to inform patients of all these possibilities and plan close and long-term follow-up.

    Pelvic fractures associated with acute external iliac artery thrombosis is less common, it is easily ignored in clinical practice, and it can result in limb amputation and hemipelvectomy due to prolonged limb ischemia. We present 2 patients with acute external iliac artery thrombosis following pelvic fractures.

    Case 1 is a 49-year-old male with occlusion of the right external iliac artery and pelvic fractures. Case 2 is a 52-year-old male with left external iliac artery occlusion and bilateral internal iliac artery rupture following pelvic fractures.

    Case 1 was diagnosed with computed tomography angiography. Case 2 was diagnosed with ultrasound examination and computed tomography angiography.

    Case 1 was performed an open incision to remove thrombus of the right external iliac artery, the right iliac-femoral artery artificial bypass was adopted to restore the blood flow. Case 2 underwent segmental resection of the damaged artery and artificial vascular implantation of left external iliac artery, and angiographic embolization of bilateral internal iliac artery. However, a left hip disarticulation was performed due to osteofascial compartment syndrome at last.

    Case 1 was cured and discharged smoothly. Case 2 survived but left with a disability after disarticulation.

    Pneumococcal meningitis generally develops from bacteremia and is often complicated by multiple organ infection.

    A 62-year-old man with no previous medical history developed progressive disturbance of consciousness preceded by high-grade fever and headache for a few days.

    The patient was diagnosed with pneumococcal meningitis based on meningeal irritation, polymorphonuclear cell-predominant pleocytosis of the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and a positive pneumococcal urinary antigen test at a different hospital.     Foramen magnum meningiomas are very rare lesions. They frequently originate from the arachnoid cells at the dura matter of the craniocervical junction. Foramen magnum meningiomas are challenging for neurosurgeons because of the complex anatomy of foramen magnum. We present a rare case of FMM with excessive calcification and without the dura tail sign which made the lesion mimic a teratoma.

    A 63 years old woman presented with progressive numbness and hyperesthesia of the shoulders and upper limbs for 2 and half years. She also experienced occasional headaches and dizziness with no nausea, vomiting or fever.

    Computed tomography scan, and magnetic resonance imaging revealed a calcified mass at occipital cistern. The lesion did not show the usual "dura tail sign" which made it mimic a teratoma on magnetic resonance imaging. Histopathology established meningioma.

    The tumor was completely resected via suboccipital approach.

The recurrent large lipomatous tumor was confirmed as well-differentiated liposarcomas through histological and MDM2-FISH immunohistochemical staining. Pelvic fractures associated with acute external iliac artery thrombosis is less common, it is easily ignored in clinical practice, and it can result in limb amputation and hemipelvectomy due to prolonged limb ischemia. We present 2 patients with acute external iliac artery thrombosis following pelvic fractures. Case 1 is a 49-year-old male with occlusion of the right external iliac artery and pelvic fractures. Case 2 is a 52-year-old male with left external iliac artery occlusion and bilateral internal iliac artery rupture following pelvic fractures. Case 1 was diagnosed with computed tomography angiography. Case 2 was diagnosed with ultrasound examination and computed tomography angiography. A 62-year-old man with no previous medical history developed progressive disturbance of consciousness preceded by high-grade fever and headache for a few days. We present a rare case of FMM with excessive calcification and without the dura tail sign which made the lesion mimic a teratoma. A 63 years old woman presented with progressive numbness and hyperesthesia of the shoulders and upper limbs for 2 and half years. She also experienced occasional headaches and dizziness with no nausea, vomiting or fever. Computed tomography scan, and magnetic resonance imaging revealed a calcified mass at occipital cistern. The lesion did not show the usual "dura tail sign" which made it mimic a teratoma on magnetic resonance imaging. Histopathology established meningioma. The tumor was completely resected via suboccipital approach. Two years follow-up revealed no recurrence of the lesion and no neurological deficits.
