Measures were program adherence (% of 3 sessions/week over 12weeks, ascertained in all participants), motivation (Behavioral Regulation in Exercise Questionnaire 3), and engagement (User Engagement Scal decreased patient motivation and absorption.

    Activins are members of the transforming growth factor-β superfamily implicated in the pathogenesis of several immunoinflammatory disorders. Based on our previous studies demonstrating that overexpression of activin-A in murine lung causes pathology sharing key features of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), we hypothesized that activins and their natural inhibitor follistatin might be particularly relevant to COVID-19 pathophysiology.

    Activin-A, activin-B, and follistatin were retrospectively analyzed in 574 serum samples from 263 COVID-19 patients hospitalized in 3 independent centers, and compared with demographic, clinical, and laboratory parameters. Optimal scaling with ridge regression was used to screen variables and establish a prediction model.

    The activin/follistatin axis was significantly deregulated during the course of COVID-19, correlated with severity and independently associated with mortality. FACT-CLINYCoD, a scoring system incorporating follistatin, activin-A, activin-B, C-reactive protein, lactate dehydrogenase, intensive care unit admission, neutrophil/lymphocyte ratio, age, comorbidities, and D-dimers, efficiently predicted fatal outcome (area under the curve [AUC], 0.951; 95% confidence interval, .919-.983; P <10-6).   • Cryopreservation of pineapple shoot tips has been established from various protocols, including droplet vitrification. Thus, this work aimed to evaluate the morphoanatomical conditions of the starting material over different times (30, 45 and 60 days) of culture before freezing and its correlation with the survival percentage of the cryopreserved shoot tips. Four accessions, Ananas comosus var. comosus (BGA-009); var. bracteatus (BGA-119); var. parguazensis (BGA-376), var. erectifolius (BGA-750) from the Pineapple Active Germplasm Bank (BGA Pineapple) and two hybrids from the Embrapa Genetic Breeding Program, FIB-ROX1 (var. bracteatus X var. erectifolius) and FIB-ROX2 ( var. erectifolius X var. bracteatus), recently introduced in the field from in vitro storage, were used. Histological sections before freezing and the percentages of survival after freezing were obtained taking into account the different times of cultivation of the donor plants. The results showed a significative interaction between genotypes (accessions and hybrids) and the culture period. The accessions BGA-009 and BGA-119 showed the highest survival rates, with 95% and 90% respectively for the 30-day culture time.     Cryopreservation of pineapple shoot tips has been established from various protocols, including droplet vitrification. Thus, this work aimed to evaluate the morphoanatomical conditions of the starting material over different times (30, 45 and 60 days) of culture before freezing and its correlation with the survival percentage of the cryopreserved shoot tips. Four accessions, Ananas comosus var. comosus (BGA-009); var. bracteatus (BGA-119); var. parguazensis (BGA-376), var. erectifolius (BGA-750) from the Pineapple Active Germplasm Bank (BGA Pineapple) and two hybrids from the Embrapa Genetic Breeding Program, FIB-ROX1 (var. bracteatus X var. erectifolius) and FIB-ROX2 ( var. erectifolius X var. bracteatus), recently introduced in the field from in vitro storage, were used. Histological sections before freezing and the percentages of survival after freezing were obtained taking into account the different times of cultivation of the donor plants. The results showed a significative interaction between genotypes (accessions and hybrids) and the culture period.     A total of 909 people living with HIV were recruited from the Copenhagen Comorbidity in HIV infection study. Information regarding demographics and depression was obtained from questionnaires. HIV-related variables and use of antidepressant medication were collected from patient records. Logistic regression models before and after adjustment for confounders were used to test our hypotheses.

    The prevalence of depression was 11%. Among traditional risk factors, only being unmarried was associated with greater odds of depression. Higher levels of quinolinic-to-kynurenic acid ratio (P = 0.018) and higher concentrations of quinolinic acid (P = 0.048) were found in individuals with depression than in those without. After adjusting for confounders, high levels of quinolinic-to-kynurenic acid ratio and high concentrations of quinolinic acid remained associated with depression [adjusted odds ratio 1.61 (1.01; 2.59) and adjusted odds ratio 1.68 (1.02; 2.77), respectively].

    Long-acting pre-exposure prophylaxis (LA-PrEP) formulated as implants and injections are promising prevention method strategies offering simplicity, discretion, and long dose duration. Men are important end users of LA-PrEP, and early assessment of their preferences could enhance downstream male engagement in HIV prevention.

    A discrete-choice experiment survey was conducted with 406 men, aged 18-24, in Cape Town, South Africa, to assess preferences for 5 LA-PrEP attributes with 2-4 pictorially-depicted levels delivery form, duration, insertion location, soreness, and delivery facility. Latent class analysis was used to explore heterogeneity of preferences and estimate preference shares.

    A higher incidence of pediatric intracranial germ cell tumors (iGCTs) in Asian countries compared with Western countries has been reported. In Malaysia, the literature regarding pediatric iGCTs have been nonexistent. The aim of this study was to review the management, survival, and long-term outcomes of pediatric iGCTs at a single tertiary center in Malaysia.

    We retrospectively reviewed data from patients below 18 years of age with iGCTs treated at the University Malaya Medical Center (UMMC) from 1998 to 2017.

    Thirty-four patients were identified, with a median follow-up of 3.54 years. Sixteen (47%) patients had pure germinoma tumors (PGs), and the remaining patients had nongerminomatous germ cell tumors (NGGCTs). The median age was 12 years, with a malefemale ratio of 4.71. Abnormal vision, headache with vomiting, and diabetes insipidus were the commonest presenting symptoms. Twenty-eight patients received initial surgical interventions, 24 were treated with chemotherapy, and 28 received radiotherapy. Eight patients experienced relapses.

  • This systematic review was performed to evaluate the results of transcatheter mitral valve implantation (TMVI) in the native mitral valve.

    Medline, EMBASE, and the Cochrane Central register were systematically searched for studies that reported results of TMVI in mitral valve regurgitation and/or stenosis and mitral annular calcification. To improve the sensitivity of the literature search, we performed citation chasing in Google Scholar, Scopus, and Web of Science.

    Twelve studies reporting results of TMVI in mitral regurgitation were retrieved and included 347 patients. The transseptal approach represented 28% of cases. Secondary mitral regurgitation was the predominant indication in 63% of cases. Thirty-day mortality was 11% and was lowered with the transseptal approach (7%). Technical success was 92%. Surgical conversion was needed in 5% of patients. Only one patient presented moderate to severe mitral regurgitation. These hemodynamic results were sustainable up to one year of follow-up. Three series focused on results of TMVI in mitral annulus calcification including 167 patients. Only nine patients were treated with TMVI dedicated prosthesis. Eighty-seven patients had their prosthesis delivered through a transseptal approach. Mitral stenosis was present in 63% of cases. Thirty-day mortality was 24%, and none with TMVI prosthesis. Technical success was achieved in 71% of cases and was improved by using TMVI prosthesis (89%). The main complication was left ventricular outflow tract obstruction (20%). Post procedural moderate to severe mitral regurgitation was observed in 4% of cases.

    Fibrinogen concentration is an important indicator of the treatment for obstetric disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC). We present how using the fibrinogen measuring device could solve problems in the treatment of postpartum hemorrhage with complicated DIC.

    A 32-year-old woman with monochorionic diamniotic twins at 22 weeks of pregnancy was diagnosed with placental abruption and underwent emergent cesarean section. The estimated blood loss was 8375 g. She was transferred to our hospital for further treatment. Compressive uterine sutures and balloon tamponade were performed. We transfused fibrinogen and fresh frozen plasma actively during the operation to maintain plasma fibrinogen above 200 mg/dL by using a point-of-care fibrinogen measuring device. In spite of massive hemorrhage exceeding 10 L, she was extubated at the end of the operation and discharged on the 7th day after the operation.

The technical and clinical success rate, recurrent bleeding rate, major complications and long-term clinical outcomes were retrospectively evaluated.

This review is focused on biological and psychosocial risk factors associated with Alzheimer's and Parkinson's diseases, highlighting the value of cognitive decline. We further emphasized on current therapeutic strategies from pharmacological and non-pharmacological perspectives focusing on their effects on cognitive impairment, protein aggregation, tau pathology, and improving the quality of life. Deeper mechanistic insights into the multifactorial neurodegeneration could offer the design and development of promising diagnostic and therapeutic strategies.
    This systematic review was performed to evaluate the results of transcatheter mitral valve implantation (TMVI) in the native mitral valve. Medline, EMBASE, and the Cochrane Central register were systematically searched for studies that reported results of TMVI in mitral valve regurgitation and/or stenosis and mitral annular calcification. To improve the sensitivity of the literature search, we performed citation chasing in Google Scholar, Scopus, and Web of Science. Twelve studies reporting results of TMVI in mitral regurgitation were retrieved and included 347 patients. The transseptal approach represented 28% of cases. Secondary mitral regurgitation was the predominant indication in 63% of cases. Thirty-day mortality was 11% and was lowered with the transseptal approach (7%). Technical success was 92%. Surgical conversion was needed in 5% of patients. Only one patient presented moderate to severe mitral regurgitation. These hemodynamic results were sustainable up to one year of follow-up. Three series focused on results of TMVI in mitral annulus calcification including 167 patients. Only nine patients were treated with TMVI dedicated prosthesis. Eighty-seven patients had their prosthesis delivered through a transseptal approach. Mitral stenosis was present in 63% of cases. Thirty-day mortality was 24%, and none with TMVI prosthesis. Technical success was achieved in 71% of cases and was improved by using TMVI prosthesis (89%). The main complication was left ventricular outflow tract obstruction (20%).     In France, the entire population was put under a total lockdown from March 17 to May 11, 2020 during the peak of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. Whether the lockdown had consequences on the management of medical emergencies such as stroke and transient ischemic attack (TIA) has yet to be fully evaluated. This article describes hospitalization rates for acute stroke in 2 French regions that experienced contrasting rates of COVID-19 infection, before, during, and after the nationwide lockdown (January to June 2020).

    All patients admitted for acute stroke/TIA into all public and private hospitals of the 2 study regions were included. Data were retrieved from the National Hospitalization Database (PMSI). In the most affected region (Grand-Est), the hospitalization rates observed in April 2020 were compared with the rates in the same period in the least affected region (Occitanie) and in the 3 prior years (2017-2019).

    There was a significant decline in hospitalization rates for stroke/TIA wn stroke/TIA hospitalizations and a fast recovery after the end of the French lockdown in the most affected region, while the least affected region saw a nonsignificant drop in stroke/TIA hospitalizations and a slow recovery. Here, to explore the biological benefits of chemokinesis and investigate its impact on the chemotactic response, we extend a Keller-Segel-type model to include chemokinesis. We apply the model to predict the dynamics of bacterial populations capable of chemokinesis and chemotaxis in chemoeffector fields inspired by microfluidic and agar plate migration assays. We find that chemokinesis combined with chemotaxis not only may enhance the population response with respect to pure chemotaxis, but also modifies it qualitatively. We conclude presenting predictions for bacteria around dynamic finite-size nutrient sources, simulating, e.g. a marine particle or a root. We show that chemokinesis can reduce the measuring bias that is created by a decaying attractant gradient.
    Coronary revascularization is a commonly performed major procedure in the hospitals. Stroke is one of the dreaded complications after coronary revascularization procedures. The focus of this review is to understand the stroke risk in percutaneous cutaneous intervention (PCI) and coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) procedures.

    Available data show that PCI offers less procedural stroke risk compared to CABG although the survival benefits of CABG are better in certain scenarios. Innovative advancements in techniques, pre-procedural optimum medical therapy (OMT), intraoperative neuro-monitoring, and multidisciplinary post procedural care are the few strategies in early detection and reduce stroke risk. Despite several innovations and strategies, it is evident that there is not enough data available to make concrete conclusions related to stroke risk after coronary revascularization, which warrants further investigation.

In patients with CD or IRO, there are no differences between males and females; prostheses improve MBF compared to edentulous patients (p less then 0.0001) and this effect is greater with IRO prostheses (p less then 0.0001); the chewing force of FD subjects remains greater (p less then 0.0001); there are no differences among chewing strength based on different BMI categories, although FD subjects have a reduced incidence of obesity; there is a significant negative correlation between MBF and age (p = 0.038; R = 0.145), and no correlation between MBF and BMI; (4) Conclusions This study showed that MBF improves more in patients using IRO prostheses, although not reaching the MBF of FD subjects. Data were extracted using a standardized protocol and data collection form and were presented narratively. A total of 11 studies were selected to include for data analysis and synthesis with the total sample size of 2,314,191 pregnant women. Here, we analysed the phenotype and function of mucosal-associated invariant T (MAIT) cells, innate-like T cells with potent antimicrobial effector function, in patients with mild and severe COVID-19 by multicolour flow cytometry. Our data indicate that MAIT cells are highly activated in patients with COVID-19, irrespective of the course of disease, and express high levels of proinflammatory cytokines such as IL-17A and TNFα ex vivo. Of note, expression of the activation marker HLA-DR positively correlated with SAPS II score, a measure of disease severity. Upon MAIT cell-specific in vitro stimulation, MAIT cells however failed to upregulate expression of the cytokines IL-17A and TNFα, as well as cytolytic proteins, that is, granzyme B and perforin.
