This paper evaluates the costs for cesarean section (CS) at a public and a Non-Governmental (NGO) hospital in Cambodia in the year 2018. We performed a full and a marginal cost analysis, i.e., we developed a cost function and calculated the respective unit costs from the provider's perspective. We distinguished fixed, step-fixed, and variable costs and followed an activity-based costing approach. The processes were determined by personal observation of CS-patients and all procedures; the resource consumption was calculated based on the existing accounting documentation, observations, and time-studies. Afterwards, we did a comparative analysis between the two hospitals and performed a sensitivity analysis, i.e., parameters were changed to cater for uncertainty. The public hospital performed 54 monthly CS with an average length of stay (ALOS) of 7.4 days, compared to 18 monthly CS with an ALOS of 3.4 days at the NGO hospital. Staff members at the NGO hospital invest more time per patient. The cost per CS at the current patient numbers is US$470.03 at the public and US$683.23 at the NGO hospital. However, the unit cost at the NGO hospital would be less than at the public hospital if the patient numbers were the same. The study provides detailed costing data to inform decisionmakers and can be seen as a steppingstone for further costing exercises.The progressive ageing of the working population and the increase in related chronic diseases tend to affect working capacity. The aim of this study was to evaluate a Workplace Disability Management Program (WDMP) within a pediatric hospital. Absenteeism due to healthcare workers' (HCWs) pre- and post- WDMP and the related costs were used for the program evaluation. The Return on Investment (ROI), the Break-Even Analysis (BEA) and the value of the average annual productivity of HCWs who took advantage of the Disability Management (DM) interventions to assess the economic impact of the program, were also used. The HCWs enrolled in the program were 131 (approximately 4% of hospital staff), of which 89.7% females and with an average age of 50.4 years (SD ± 8.99). Sick leave days of the HCWs involved decreased by 66.6% in the year following the end of WDMP compared to the previous one (p less then 0.001). The total estimated cost reduction of absenteeism is 427,896€ over a year. ROI was equal to 27.66€. BEA indicated that the break-even point was reached by implementing the program on 3.27 HCWs. The program evaluation demonstrated the particular effectiveness of the implemented WDMP model, acting positively on the variables that affect productivity and the limitation to work.A pH-triggered mesoporous silica nanoparticle (MSN)-based nano-vehicle for the dual delivery of doxorubicin (DOX)/camptothecin-PEG (CPT-PEG) has been prepared. To enhance its selectivity, the nanoparticles were decorated with glycyrrhetinic acid (GA) to target HepG2 cells. The highly insoluble CPT was derivatized with a reductive-cleavable PEG chain to improve its loading within the MSN. The preparation of these particles consisted of four steps. First, CPT-PEG was loaded within the pores of the MSN. Then, dihydrazide polyethylene glycol chains were introduced onto the surface of an aldehyde-functionalized MSN by means of a hydrazone bond. Afterwards, DOX was covalently attached to the other end of the dihydrazide polyethylene glycol chains. Finally, the resulting nanoparticles were decorated with GA by formation of an imine bond between the amino group of DOX and a benzaldehyde-GA derivative. Three hundred and ninety PwMS participated in the study, performing MVIC and 1RM tests of bilateral (both legs together at once) and unilateral (each leg singly) knee extensors. There was no difference in 1RM according to the disease course of MS, but there was according to the degree of neurological disability, being more preserved in those with a lower degree of disability. MVIC tends to be higher in patients with relapsing-remitting MS respect those with progressive MS, and in patients with lower levels of neurological disability. Asymmetry above the values considered normal in 1RM was present in 20-60% of patients and 56-79% in the MVIC test, depending on the type of MS and tended to be lower in those with less disability.

  • The benefit of minimally invasive surgery in colorectal cancer patients has been established, however it is not clear whether these advantages apply to older patients as well. The aim of this study was to review short- and mid-term outcomes in elderly patients, over the age of 75 years, with colorectal cancer.

    This was a retrospective study of selected patients over the age of 75 who underwent laparoscopic and open surgery for colorectal cancer between February 2013 and January 2018 in a tertiary referral center. https://www.selleckchem.com/products/sulfosuccinimidyl-oleate-sodium.html All patients were categorized in two groups Group 1 included patients who had open procedure (OP) and Group 2 those who underwent laparoscopic procedure (LP).     A total of 78 patients were included in our cohort; 39 (50%) were operated with LP. The LP was equally safe in comparison with the OP, considering the similar postoperative complications [9 patients (34.6%) in LP and 5 paup and 8 days in OP group; p=0.001). The number of harvested lymph nodes were without statistically significant differences [LP group retrieved 20.0 nodes in comparison with 20.5 nodes in OP group (p= 0.816)]. The overall survival analysis showed no difference between the two approaches in 12 and 24 postoperative months (p=0.098 and 0.387, respectively).

Taking this fact into consideration, the current research work was scheduled to explore the regulatory control of lncRNA-PCAT1 in maintaining the growth and progression of human colon cancer cell.

    The expression of lncRNA-PCAT1 was assessed through qRT-PCR method. DAPI and acridine orange (AO)/ethidium bromide (EB) staining protocols along with the colony formation protocols were performed to evaluate the viability of cancer cells. The migratory and invasion properties of cancer cells were examined by the wound-healing and transwell assays, respectively. Western blotting was used to assess the expression of proteins of interest. MTT assay was used for the assessment of cell proliferation.

    lncRNA-PCAT1 was highly up-regulated in the colon cancer tissues and cancer cell lines. The repression of lncRNA-PCAT1 in colon cancer cells reduced their viability through induction of Bax/Bcl-2 mediated apoptosis.     To explore the efficacy and safety of colorectal resection combined with intraoperative radiofrequency ablation (RFA) in the treatment of colorectal cancer (CRC) with liver metastasis.

    The clinical data of 106 CRC patients with liver metastasis were retrospectively analyzed. There were 53 cases treated with CRC resection combined with RFA (RFA group) and 53 cases treated with surgical resection of CRC and liver metastasis (surgery group). The clinicopathological features, and perioperative and postoperative complications were compared between the two groups, and the patient's survival and tumor recurrence were recorded via follow-up. Moreover, the risk factors for survival and recurrence in patients were analyzed via univariate and multivariate Cox regression analyses.

    In the RFA group, the amount of intraoperative blood loss and the number of cases of blood transfusion were significantly smaller than those in the surgery group, and the postoperative hospital stay was obviously shorter than thatn significantly reduce the intraoperative blood loss and shorten the hospital stay, with a comparable long-term survival, but the tumor recurrence rate is higher than that in patients with resection.

    Setting the cut-off point for caspase-3 positivity at 5%, 48% of the patients were characterized as caspase-3(+). Caspase-3 positivity was not found related either to any clinicopathological parameter or to the oncological outcome. Choosing simple survivin positivity as the cut-off point for its expression, 78% of the patients were considered as survivin(+). Surviviic role for survivin inexpression was not confirmed. On the contrary, survivin(-) tumors were mainly of poor differentiation and advanced T stage. An inverse relationship between caspase-3 and survivin expressions was also not confirmed. Future studies focusing on specific survivin isoforms expression or inexpression may give answers on apoptotic-antiapoptotic interactions on cancer cell death.

The groups were compared in terms of demographic characteristics, type of surgery, pathological outcomes and survival.

    The rate of laparoscopic surgery was significantly lower in the ** group compared with ****and AC groups (45.4% vs 54.5% vs 35.7%, respectively, p=0.001). Kappa values indicated adequate interrater agreement under white light (κ = 0.76) and ALS (κ = 0.78). The visibility scale intraclass correlation coefficients were .91 for normal light and .93 for ALS. Statistical modeling showed greater bruise size was associated with higher visibility using either scale, and greater contrast in color or lightness was associated with higher Bruise Visibility Scale values.

    Glenoid component loosening has remained one of the most common complications for total shoulder arthroplasty. Three-dimensional modeling of the glenoid may reveal novel information regarding glenoid vault morphology, providing a foundation for implant designs that possess the potential to extend the survivorship of the prosthesis.

    A three-dimensional digitizer was used to digitize the glenoids of 70 cadaveric scapulae. We identified ideal position, fit, and maximum diameter for cylinders of 5, 10, and 15 mm depths. Maximum diameter and volume were also measured at the glenoid center, and the data were compared.

    The vault region that accommodates the greatest diameter and volume for 5, 10, and 15 mm depth cylinders were identified in the postero-inferior glenoid. Across all specimens, this region accommodated a cylinder diameter that was 24.82%, 40.45%, and 50.34% greater than that achieved at the glenoid center for 5, 10, and 15 mm depth cylinders, respectively (all, P < 0.0001). The location of thitomy, providing a foundation for alternative approaches to glenoid prosthesis fixation in total shoulder arthroplasty and related procedures.
    The Altmetric Attention Score (AAS) has been associated with citation rates across medical and surgical disciplines. However, factors that drive high AAS remain poorly understood and there remains multiple pitfalls to correlating these metrics alone with the quality of a study. The purpose of the current study was to determine the relationship between methodologic and study biases and the AAS in randomized controlled trials (RCTs) published in total joint arthroplasty journals.

    All RCTs from 2016 published in The Journal of Arthroplasty, The Bone and Joint Journal, The Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery, Clinical Orthopedics and Related Research, The Journal of Knee Surgery, Hip International, and Acta Orthopaedica were extracted. Methodologic bias was graded with the JADAD scale, whereas study bias was graded with the Cochrane risk of bias tool for RCTs.     Palliative chemotherapy (PC) is associated with a modest survival benefit in patients with incurable esophageal and gastric cancer; however, changes in symptom profile during treatment are not well described. Understanding the trajectory of symptoms during treatment may lead to improved care and facilitate shared decision making.     Patients with SBOTs and peritoneal implants, treated in or referred to our institution, were retrospectively reviewed. Outcomes of patients treated conservatively (preservation of the uterus and at least a part of one ovary) to promote subsequent fertility were specifically analyzed.

    Between 1971 and 2017, 212 patients were identified and followed-up. Among these patients, 65 underwent conservative treatment; eight patients had invasive implants. Among patients treated conservatively, 38 (58%) patients recurred. Twenty-eight recurrences were observed under the form of borderline tumor on the spared ovary and/or noninvasive implants, but eight patients had a recurrence under the form of invasive disease. Compared with radical surgery, the use of conservative treatment (p < 0.0001) was a prognostic factor on dce. Uncertainties regarding the safety of conservative treatment should be exposed to these patients.

In past decades, Colombia (South America) has experienced high levels of armed conflict, which created an environment of chronic stress, resulting in an increased incidence of PTSD in children. Limited research exists on the effects of PTSD on emotional memory functioning of these Colombian youth living in chronically stressful environments. In the present study, 23 PTSD affected youth and 26 controls were asked to recall items from a memorised word list, as well as remembering details from a short emotional story. Although no significant differences were found for word list memory, deficits for emotional story content were found in the PTSD youth, particularly for facts involving negative emotional details. The latter may suggest a deficit in executive functioning for the integration of emotionally laden stimuli, perhaps induced as a by-product of their traumatic experiences.To evaluate the safety and efficacy of Chinese medicine, Qiaoshao formula combined with dapoxetine was used for the treatment of premature ejaculation in a real-life setting. Nine hundred and five males diagnosed with premature ejaculation were reviewed in this retrospective cohort study. We divided the patients into two groups dapoxetine alone and Qiaoshao formula combined with dapoxetine according to actual interventions provided to patients in clinics. The perceived intravaginal ejaculation latency time and the premature ejaculation profile measures markedly improved in both groups. However, in men with severe premature ejaculation (baseline perceived intravaginal ejaculation latency time less then 1 min) and those with baseline age ≤30 years, the perceived intravaginal ejaculation latency time was slightly but significantly longer with combined therapy than with dapoxetine alone (p less then .05). Therefore, combined therapy involving the Qiaoshao formula and dapoxetine proved to safe as well as effective for treating premature ejaculation while prolonging the perceived intravaginal ejaculation latency time, which significantly improved the overall satisfaction of the patient and likely that of the couple.

    3365 young people died of suicide during 2006-2015 (including 2473 boys and men, 73.5%); 1292 people (38.4%) lived in areas of greater socio-economic disadvantage. Free text reports were included in the NCIS for 3027 people (90%), of whom 1237 (40.9%) had diagnosed mental health disorders and 475 (15.7%) had possible mental health disorders. Alcohol consumption near the time of death was detected in 1015 of 3027 cases (33.5%); histories of self-harm were recorded in 940 cases (31.1%) and of illicit substance misuse in 852 (28.1%). Adverse life events included history of abuse or neglect (223, 7.4%), suicide of relatives, friends, or acquaintances (202, 6.7%), and financial difficulties (174, 5.8%).

    Three-quarters of the young people who died by suicide were boys or young men, and 57% had diagnosed or possible mental health disorders, suggesting that the mental health and wellbeing of young Australians should be a key target for youth suicide prevention. To reduce the number of youth suicides, it is imperative that prevention strategies target the mental health and psychosocial stressors that lead to suicidal crises in young people.

In past decades, Colombia (South America) has experienced high levels of armed conflict, which created an environment of chronic stress, resulting in an increased incidence of PTSD in children. Limited research exists on the effects of PTSD on emotional memory functioning of these Colombian youth living in chronically stressful environments. In the present study, 23 PTSD affected youth and 26 controls were asked to recall items from a memorised word list, as well as remembering details from a short emotional story. Although no significant differences were found for word list memory, deficits for emotional story content were found in the PTSD youth, particularly for facts involving negative emotional details. The latter may suggest a deficit in executive functioning for the integration of emotionally laden stimuli, perhaps induced as a by-product of their traumatic experiences.To evaluate the safety and efficacy of Chinese medicine, Qiaoshao formula combined with dapoxetine was used for the treatment of premature ejaculation in a real-life setting. Nine hundred and five males diagnosed with premature ejaculation were reviewed in this retrospective cohort study. We divided the patients into two groups dapoxetine alone and Qiaoshao formula combined with dapoxetine according to actual interventions provided to patients in clinics. The perceived intravaginal ejaculation latency time and the premature ejaculation profile measures markedly improved in both groups.     In this 4-year prospective observational study, all elbows in a dysplasia screening program including 14,073 dogs were studied using radiographs in two projections. Elbows were evaluated for the presence of medial humeral epicondylar lesions or discreet calcified structures and were described as they appeared. The age, breed, and sex of affected dogs were recorded. The prevalence for each lesion was calculated exclusively on breeds where the number of radiographed dogs exceeded 500.

    Baseline serum IL-6 levels in 300/369 randomized patients were categorized into low (1.6-7.1 pg/mL), medium (7.2-39.5 pg/mL), and high (39.6-692.3 pg/mL) tertiles. HRQoL was measured at baseline and week (W)24 and W52 by Short Form 36 (SF-36) physical/mental component summary (PCS/MCS) and domain snctioning domain, and AM-stiffness VAS (nominal interaction p < 0.05). PCS improvements ≥MCID were higher in high (odds ratio [OR] 6.31 [2.37, 16.81]) versus low (OR 0.97 [0.43, 2.16]) tertiles with sarilumab versus adalimumab (nominal interaction p < 0.05).     Radial artery occlusion is a silent complication of a transradial approach to cardiac catheterization that may complicate subsequent transradial procedures in patients undergoing cardiac catheterization. A transradial band reduces vascular complications and provides brisk, powerful and effective haemostasis. The purpose of this study was to assess the frequency of radial artery occlusion in 180 patients undergoing transradial coronary catheterization.

    The median age of the study cohort was 58years. Radial artery occlusion was found in 14 (7.8%) patients. When stratifying by age group and sex, there was no significant difference in radial artery occlusion between age groups and sex. It was likewise found that comorbidities such as diabetes mellitus, hypertension and smoking, increased the risk of radial artery occlusion however this was observed to be significant only for diabetes mellitus. We therefore conclude that a transradial pneumatic pressure band is an extremely helpful and safe strategy to prevent radial artery occlusion.

    Tenosynovitis of the long head of the biceps (LHB) brachii is a common disease in patients over 40 years old. It can always result in chronic anterior shoulder pain and limited function. Acupuncture is one of most popular conservative treatment methods, and increasing studies indicate that it has remarkable therapeutic effects on the tenosynovitis of LHB brachii. However, the effectiveness and safety of acupuncture for treating tenosynovitis of LHB brachii remain largely uncertain. In our study, we will perform the first systematic review and meta-analysis to explore the effectiveness and safety of acupuncture on the tenosynovitis of LHB brachii.

    We will search the randomized controlled trial (RCT) literatures involving acupuncture for treating tenosynovitis of LHB brachii in eight electric databases, including PubMed, Web of Science, EMBASE, the Cochrane Library, Chinese National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), Chinese Biomedical Literature Database (CBM), Wanfang Database, and Technology Periodical Dat in the future.

  • The current study was conducted to investigate the protective properties of Eucalyptus globulus leaves methanolic extract (EGLME) against diclofenac sodium (DS) induced hepatorenal and testicular toxicity in male rats. A total of 40 rats were equally divided into 4 groups, Control, Diclofenac sodium (DS), EGLME and DS + EGLME groups, respectively. DS and EGLME were administered orally at dose rate 2.5 and 100 mg/kg BW, 4 times/week for 8 weeks, respectively. Administration of DS distorted hepatorenal functions manifested by alteration of serum levels of ALT, AST, total protein and albumin, creatinine and urea with changes of histological architectures. DS caused reproductive toxicity represented by minimized sperm count, individual sperm motility and viability; depleted concentration of reduced glutathione (GSH) in testicular tissue; and decreased testosterone level with alteration in testicular histological features. In contrast, co-treatment of DS intoxicated rats with EGLME protected rats against the adverse effects of DS revealing enhancing properties of EGLME on rats' liver, kidney and testes. In conclusion, we demonstrated that EGLME had a potent protecting property against DS induced hepatic, renal and testicular toxicity in male rats, with special concern to testicular tissue via modulation of GSH as an oxidant marker.

    In 1995, a rapid response project for humanitarian and medical emergencies, including outbreak responses, named '

    To assess the outcomes of cholera and measles outbreak alerts that were received in the PUC surveillance system between 2016 and 2018.

    Overall, 459 outbreak alerts were detected, respectively 69% and 31% for cholera and measles. Of these, 32% were actively detected and 68% passively detected. Most alerts (90%) required no intervention and 10% of alerts had an intervention.     All people with HIV who screen negative for active tuberculosis (TB) should receive isoniazid preventive therapy (IPT). IPT implementation remains substantially below the 90% WHO target. This study sought to further understanding of IPT prescription by piloting a simplified prescribing approach.

    This was a mixed-methods implementation study.

    Nine providers were recruited and underwent training on 2018 WHO guidelines. A simplified prescribing tool containing antiretroviral therapy (ART) and IPT prescriptions was introduced into the workflow for 2 weeks. Prescription data were collected from file review. Interviews were conducted with prescribers.

    During the study period, 41 patients were evaluated for ART initiation; 34 (83%) files used the simplified prescribing tool. Thirty-seven (90%) patients were eligible for same-day ART and IPT initiation, of whom 36 (97%) received IPT prescription. Qualitative interviews identified the following barriers to IPT prescription cognitive burden, extensive documentation, limited management support, paucity of training, stock-outs, and patient-related factors. Provider acceptability of the tool was favorable, with unanimous recommendation to colleagues on the basis of streamlining documentation and reminding to prescribe.

    India's National Tuberculosis Elimination Programme (NTEP) covers diagnostic and therapeutic costs of TB treatment. However, persons living with TB (PLWTB) continue to experience financial distress due to direct costs (payment for testing, treatment, travel, hospitalization, and nutritional supplements) and indirect costs (lost wages, loan interest, and cost of domestic helpers).

    To analyze the magnitude and pattern of TB-related costs from the perspective of Indian PLWTB.

    We identified relevant articles using key search terms ('tuberculosis,' 'India,' 'cost,' 'expenditures,' 'financing,' 'catastrophic' and 'out of pocket') and calculated variance-weighted mean costs.

    Indian patients incur substantial direct costs (mean US$46.8). Mean indirect costs (US$666.6) constitute 93.4% of the net costs. Mean direct costs before diagnosis can be up to four-fold that of costs during treatment. Treatment in the private sector can result in costs up to six-fold higher than in government facilities. As many as one in three PLWTB in India experience catastrophic costs.

    PLWTB in India face high direct and indirect costs. Priority interventions to realize India's goal of eliminating catastrophic costs from TB include decreasing diagnostic delays through active case finding, reducing the need for travel, improving awareness and perception of NTEP services, and ensuring sufficient reimbursement for inpatient TB care.

A total of 40 rats were equally divided into 4 groups, Control, Diclofenac sodium (DS), EGLME and DS + EGLME groups, respectively. DS and EGLME were administered orally at dose rate 2.5 and 100 mg/kg BW, 4 times/week for 8 weeks, respectively. Administration of DS distorted hepatorenal functions manifested by alteration of serum levels of ALT, AST, total protein and albumin, creatinine and urea with changes of histological architectures. This study sought to further understanding of IPT prescription by piloting a simplified prescribing approach. Primary care clinics in Matlosana, South Africa. This was a mixed-methods implementation study. Nine providers were recruited and underwent training on 2018 WHO guidelines. A simplified prescribing tool containing antiretroviral therapy (ART) and IPT prescriptions was introduced into the workflow for 2 weeks. Prescription data were collected from file review. Interviews were conducted with prescribers. During the study period, 41 patients were evaluated for ART initiation; 34 (83%) files used the simplified prescribing tool. Thirty-seven (90%) patients were eligible for same-day ART and IPT initiation, of whom 36 (97%) received IPT prescription. Qualitative interviews identified the following barriers to IPT prescription cognitive burden, extensive documentation, limited management support, paucity of training, stock-outs, and patient-related factors. Provider acceptability of the tool was favorable, with unanimous recommendation to colleagues on the basis of streamlining documentation and reminding to prescribe. To analyze the magnitude and pattern of TB-related costs from the perspective of Indian PLWTB. We identified relevant articles using key search terms ('tuberculosis,' 'India,' 'cost,' 'expenditures,' 'financing,' 'catastrophic' and 'out of pocket') and calculated variance-weighted mean costs. Indian patients incur substantial direct costs (mean US$46.8). Mean indirect costs (US$666.6) constitute 93.4% of the net costs. GBM stem cells (GBMSC) resist the standard-of-care therapy, temozolomide, and are considered a major contributor to tumor resistance. Mammalian target of rapamycin Complex 1 (mTORC1) regulates cell proliferation and has been shown by others to have reduced activity in GBMSC. We recently identified a novel chemical series of human-safe piperazine-based brain-penetrant mTORC1-specific inhibitors. We assayed the piperazine-mTOR binding strength by two biophysical measurements, biolayer interferometry and field-effect biosensing, and these confirmed each other and demonstrated a structure-activity relationship. As mTORC1 is altered in human GBMSC, and as mTORC1 inhibitors have been tested in previous GBM clinical trials, we tested the killing potency of the tightest-binding piperazines and observed that these were potent GBMSC killers. GBMSCs are resistant to the standard-of-care temozolomide therapy, but temozolomide supplemented with tight-binding piperazine meclizine and flunarizine greatly enhanced GBMSC death over temozolomide alone. The aim of this review is to describe the state-of-the-art of alternative therapies to the use of antibiotics and their effectiveness in humans and monogastric animals (poultry, pigs, fish, rabbits, dogs and cats). In particular, those molecules (probiotics, prebiotics and postbiotics) which have a direct function on the gastrointestinal health are herein critically analysed in the prevention or treatment of gastrointestinal diseases or dysbiosis induced by the consumption of antibiotics.Although ceramic-on-ceramic (CoC) bearings have been shown to produce the smallest amount of wear volume in vitro as well as in vivo studies when used for total hip arthroplasties (THA), concerns about the failure of these bearing surfaces persist due to early failures observed after short postoperative time. In this study, an exhaustive analysis of the early failure occurred on the new generation of ceramic bearings, consisting of a composite alumina matrix-based material reinforced with yttria-stabilized tetragonal zirconia (Y-TZP) particles, chromium dioxide, and strontium crystals, was performed. For this study, 118 CoC bearings from 117 patients were revised. This article describes a group of mechanical failure CoC-bearing BIOLOX THA hip prosthesis patients without trauma history. The retrieved samples were observed under scanning electron microscopy (SEM), composition was analyzed with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), and damaged surfaces were analyzed by grazing-incidence X-ray diffraction (GI-XRD) and white light interferometry. In the short term, CoC articulations provided similar mechanical behavior and functional outcome to those in XLPE cases. However, 5% more early mechanical failures cases were observed for the ceramic components. Although the fracture rate of third generation CoC couples is low, the present study shows the need to further improve the third generation of CoC-bearing couples for THA. Despite the improved wear compared to other materials, stress concentrators are sources of initial crack propagation, such as those found in the bore-trunnion areas. Moreover, in view of the evidence observed in this study, the chipping observed was due to the presence of monoclinic phase of the Y-TZP instead of tetragonal, which presents better mechanical properties. The results showed that total safety after receiving a THA is still a goal to be pursued.

The optimal parameters of pulse electrodeposition turn out to be f = 50 Hz, γ = 30%, Ja = 25 mA cm-2, t = 60 min. Together, the consequences of the experiments give assistance to uncover and roughly conclude the mechanism of pulse electrodeposition.This study compared effects of pH, ionic strength and complexation with Mg2+ on the chromophores and fluorophores of aquatic and terrestrial NOM exemplified by the standard isolates Suwannee River fulvic and humic acid (SRFA and SRHA) and Pahokee Peat fulvic and humic acids (PPFA and PPHA) provided by the International Humic Substance Society (IHSS). The intensity of the differential spectra of the NOM isolates increased monotonically with pH. These spectra comprised contributions of similar chromophore systems associated with the carboxylic and phenolic moieties. The intensity of SRFA and PPFA fluorescence changed non-monotonically vs. pH indicating that the deprotonation of the phenolic fluorophores decreased their emission yields. Examination of the effects of pH on the slopes of the log-transformed absorbance of NOM showed that the influence of deprotonation on the conformations of PPFA and PPHA molecules was less prominent than those for SRFA but not dissimilar to those of SRHA. Changes of the differential spectra and spectral slopes showed that Mg2+/PPFA and Mg2+/PPHA complexation was more effected by electrostatic interactions while the involvement of phenolic groups was notable for SRFA. The observed trends highlight similarities and differences in the properties of the chromophores and fluorophores in the standard isolates of soil and aquatic NOM. The ionocyte subtypes of H+-ATPase-rich (HR) and Na+/K+-ATPase-rich (NaR) cells were labeled by immunostaining and had decreased with ≥1 mg L-1. Shrinkage of the apical opening of ionocytes was revealed by scanning electronic microscopy. We show that composite 24 h samples taken at three replications from the outflow of the grit chamber, primary settling tank and clarifier of the WWTP of Sari City, on the southern coast of the Caspian Sea, contained 12667 ± 668, 3514 ± 543 and 423 ± 44.9 MP/m3, respectively. Fibers accounted for 94.9%, 89.9% and 77.5% of the total number of MPs, respectively. The MP removal efficiency was 96.7%. MP shape (fiber, particle), size and structure were the most important factors determining their removal in different steps of the wastewater treatment process. The structure of microfibers (polyester, acrylic and nylon) and the consequent higher density than water explained their high removal (72.3%) in the primary settling tank. However, size was more important in microparticle removal with particles ≥500 μm being removed in the primary settling tank and less then 500 μm in the clarifier unit. The smallest particles (37-300 μm) showed the lowest removal efficiency. The predominant types of fibers and particles were polyester and polyethylene, respectively, which are likely to originate from the washing of synthetic textiles and from microbeads in toothpaste and cosmetics. In this study, Pyropia haitanensis were exposed to arsenate [As(V)] (0.1, 1, 10, 100 μM) or arsenite [As(III)] (0.1, 1, 10 μM) under laboratory conditions for 3 d. The species of water-soluble arsenic, the total concentration of lipid-soluble and cell residue arsenic of the algae cells was analyzed. As(V) was mainly transformed into oxo-arsenosugar-phosphate, with other arsenic compounds such as monomethylated, As(III), demethylated arsenic and oxo-arsenosugar-glycerol being likely the intermediates of arsenosugar synthesis. When high concentration of As(III) was toxic to P. haitanensis, As(III) entered into the cells and was transformed into less toxic organoarsenicals and As(V). Transcriptome results showed genes involved in DNA replication, mismatch repair, base excision repair, and nucleotide excision repair were up-regulated in the algae cells exposed to 10 μM As(V), and multiple genes involved in glutathione metabolism and photosynthetic were up-regulated by 1 μM As(III). A large number of ABC transporters were down-regulated by As(V) while ten genes related to ABC transporters were up-regulated by As(III), indicating that ABC transporters were involved in transporting As(III) to vacuoles in algae cells. We show that composite 24 h samples taken at three replications from the outflow of the grit chamber, primary settling tank and clarifier of the WWTP of Sari City, on the southern coast of the Caspian Sea, contained 12667 ± 668, 3514 ± 543 and 423 ± 44.9 MP/m3, respectively. Fibers accounted for 94.9%, 89.9% and 77.5% of the total number of MPs, respectively. The MP removal efficiency was 96.7%. MP shape (fiber, particle), size and structure were the most important factors determining their removal in different steps of the wastewater treatment process. The structure of microfibers (polyester, acrylic and nylon) and the consequent higher density than water explained their high removal (72.3%) in the primary settling tank. However, size was more important in microparticle removal with particles ≥500 μm being removed in the primary settling tank and less then 500 μm in the clarifier unit. The smallest particles (37-300 μm) showed the lowest removal efficiency. The predominant types of fibers and particles were polyester and polyethylene, respectively, which are likely to originate from the washing of synthetic textiles and from microbeads in toothpaste and cosmetics. Despite the efficiency of the Sari WWTP in removing MPs, it remains a major emission source of MPs to the Caspian Sea due to its high daily discharge load.Up to now, complicated organoarsenicals were mainly identified in marine organisms, suggesting that these organisms play a critical role in arsenic biogeochemical cycling because of low phosphate and relatively high arsenic concentration in the marine environment. However, the response of marine macroalgae to inorganic arsenic remains unknown. In this study, Pyropia haitanensis were exposed to arsenate [As(V)] (0.1, 1, 10, 100 μM) or arsenite [As(III)] (0.1, 1, 10 μM) under laboratory conditions for 3 d. The species of water-soluble arsenic, the total concentration of lipid-soluble and cell residue arsenic of the algae cells was analyzed. As(V) was mainly transformed into oxo-arsenosugar-phosphate, with other arsenic compounds such as monomethylated, As(III), demethylated arsenic and oxo-arsenosugar-glycerol being likely the intermediates of arsenosugar synthesis. When high concentration of As(III) was toxic to P. haitanensis, As(III) entered into the cells and was transformed into less toxic organoarsenicals and As(V). Transcriptome results showed genes involved in DNA replication, mismatch repair, base excision repair, and nucleotide excision repair were up-regulated in the algae cells exposed to 10 μM As(V), and multiple genes involved in glutathione metabolism and photosynthetic were up-regulated by 1 μM As(III). A large number of ABC transporters were down-regulated by As(V) while ten genes related to ABC transporters were up-regulated by As(III), indicating that ABC transporters were involved in transporting As(III) to vacuoles in algae cells.
