We modeled 56 convolutional neural networks (CNN) with different characteristics and developed an ensemble system to derive the best performance by combining several modeling results.Results The proposed method with an accuracy of 88.1% and an average area under the receiver operating characteristic of 0.975 demonstrates significantly better performance to classify glaucoma stages compared to the best single CNN model that has an accuracy of 85.2% and an average area under the receiver operating characteristic of 0.950. The false negative is the least adjacent misprediction, and it is less in the proposed method than in the best single CNN model.Conclusions The method of averaging multiple CNN models can better classify glaucoma stages by using fundus photographs than a single CNN model. The objective of this study was to investigate the early effects of osteogenic loading on cytokine expression and angiogenesis during the first 3 weeks of BMP-2 mediated segmental bone defect repair.Materials and Methods A rat model of BMP-2 mediated bone defect repair was subjected to an osteogenic mechanical loading protocol using ambulatory rehabilitation and a compliant, load-sharing fixator with an integrated implantable strain sensor. The effect of fixator load-sharing on local tissue strain, angiogenesis, and cytokine expression was evaluated.Results Using sensor readings for local measurements of boundary conditions, finite element simulations showed strain became amplified in remaining soft tissue regions between 1 and 3 weeks (Week 3 load-sharing -1.89 ± 0.35% and load-shielded -1.38 ± 0.35% vs. Week 1 load-sharing -1.54 ± 0.17%; load-shielded -0.76 ± 0.06%). Multivariate analysis of cytokine arrays revealed that load-sharing significantly altered expression profiles in the defect tissue at 2 weeks compared to load-shielded defects. Specifically, loading reduced VEGF (p = 0.052) and increased CXCL5 (LIX) levels. Subsequently, vascular volume in loaded defects was reduced relative to load-shielded defects but similar to intact bone at 3 weeks.   • Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) is a devastating malignancy with one of the lowest survival rates. Early detection, an improved understanding of tumor biology, and novel therapeutic discoveries are needed in order to improve overall patient survival. Scientific progress towards meeting these goals relies upon accurate modeling of the human disease. From two-dimensional (2D) cell lines to the advanced modeling available today, we aim to characterize the critical tools in efforts to further understand PDAC biology. The National Center for Biotechnology Information's PubMed and the Elsevier's SCOPUS were used to perform a comprehensive literature review evaluating preclinical human-derived PDAC models. Keywords included pancreatic cancer, PDAC, preclinical models, KRAS mutations, xenograft, co-culturing fibroblasts, co-culturing lymphocytes and PDAC immunotherapy Initial search was limited to articles about PDAC and was then expanded to include other gastrointestinal malignancies where information may covivo to continue to make progress in this disease. Recapitulating the complex tumor microenvironment in a preclinical model of human disease is an outstanding and urgent need in PDAC. Definitive characterization of available human models for PDAC serves to further the core mission of pancreatic cancer translational research.Top-down population modelling has gained applied prominence in public health, planning, and sustainability applications at the global scale. These top-down population modelling methods often rely on remote-sensing (RS) derived representation of the built-environment and settlements as key predictive covariates. While these RS-derived data, which are global in extent, have become more advanced and more available, gaps in spatial and temporal coverage remain. These gaps have prompted the interpolation of the built-environment and settlements, but the utility of such interpolated data in further population modelling applications has garnered little research. Thus, our objective was to determine the utility of modelled built-settlement extents in a top-down population modelling application. Here we take modelled global built-settlement extents between 2000 and 2012, created using a spatio-temporal disaggregation of observed settlement growth. We then demonstrate the applied utility of such annually modelled settlement data within the application of annually modelling population, using random forest informed dasymetric disaggregations, across 172 countries and a 13-year period. We demonstrate that the modelled built-settlement data are consistently the 2nd most important covariate in predicting population density, behind annual lights at night, across the globe and across the study period. Further, we demonstrate that this modelled built-settlement data often provides more information than current annually available RS-derived data and last observed built-settlement extents.Tissue engineering (TE) is a multidisciplinary research field aiming at the regeneration, restoration, or replacement of damaged tissues and organs. Classical TE approaches combine scaffolds, cells and soluble factors to fabricate constructs mimicking the native tissue to be regenerated. However, to date, limited success in clinical translations has been achieved by classical TE approaches, because of the lack of satisfactory biomorphological and biofunctional features of the obtained constructs. Developmental TE has emerged as a novel TE paradigm to obtain tissues and organs with correct biomorphology and biofunctionality by mimicking the morphogenetic processes leading to the tissue/organ generation in the embryo. Ectodermal appendages, for instance, develop in vivo by sequential interactions between epithelium and mesenchyme, in a process known as secondary induction. A fine artificial replication of these complex interactions can potentially lead to the fabrication of the tissues/organs to be regenerated. Successful developmental TE applications have been reported, in vitro and in vivo, for ectodermal appendages such as teeth, hair follicles and glands. In this light, this review presents the mechanical environment of blood vessels, discusses their mechanical behavior responsible for the suited blood flow into the body (non-linearity, anisotropy, hysteresis, and compliance), and compares the mechanical properties reported in literature (obtained with compression, tensile, stress-relaxation, creep, dynamic mechanical analysis, burst pressure, and dynamic compliance tests). This perspective highlights that the mechanical properties extracted through conventional tests are not always suitable indicators of the mechanical performance during the working life of a vascular substitute. The available tests can be then strategically used at different stages of the substitute development, prioritizing the simplicity of the method at early stages, and the physiological pertinence at later stages, following as **** as possible ISO standards in the field. A consistent mechanical characterization focused on the behavior to which they will be subdued during real life is one key and missing element in the quest for physiological-like mechanical performance of vascular substitutes.

  • Strong experimental evidence from studies in human donor retinas and animal models supports the idea that the retinal pathology associated with age-related macular degeneration (AMD) involves mitochondrial dysfunction and consequent altered retinal metabolism. This chapter provides a brief overview of mitochondrial structure and function, summarizes evidence for mitochondrial defects in AMD, and highlights the potential ramifications of these defects on retinal health and function. Discussion of mitochondrial haplogroups and their association with AMD brings to light how mitochondrial genetics can influence disease outcome. As one of the most metabolically active tissues in the human body, there is strong evidence that disruption in key metabolic pathways contributes to AMD pathology. The section on retinal metabolism reviews cell-specific metabolic differences and how the metabolic interdependence of each retinal cell type creates a unique ecosystem that is disrupted in the diseased retina. The final discussion includes strategies for therapeutic interventions that target key mitochondrial pathways as a treatment for AMD.Aberrant regulation of epigenetic mechanisms, including the two most common types; DNA methylation and histone modification have been implicated in common chronic progressive conditions, including Alzheimer disease, cardiovascular disease, and age-related macular degeneration (AMD). All these conditions are complex, meaning that environmental factors, genetic factors, and their interactions play a role in disease pathophysiology. Although genome wide association studies (GWAS), and studies on twins demonstrate the genetic/hereditary component to these complex diseases, including AMD, this contribution is **** less than 100%. The integration of different regulatory features, such as open-chromatin regions, histone marks, transcription factor binding sites, with AMD-GWAS can provide meaningful insights into variant's function. However, functional interpretation of variant-gene relationship in AMD is challenging because of inadequate understanding of cell-type specific and context-dependent information in disease-relevant tissues. Here we focus on the role of sequencing-based omic studies in assigning biological meaning to disease-associated variants and genes. We will conclude by reviewing the paradigm of "response to injury," which provides a means to integrate various immunologic mechanisms along with nonimmune mechanisms of tissue injury and repair as a model to understand the pathobiology of AMD.
    Strong experimental evidence from studies in human donor retinas and animal models supports the idea that the retinal pathology associated with age-related macular degeneration (AMD) involves mitochondrial dysfunction and consequent altered retinal metabolism. This chapter provides a brief overview of mitochondrial structure and function, summarizes evidence for mitochondrial defects in AMD, and highlights the potential ramifications of these defects on retinal health and function. Discussion of mitochondrial haplogroups and their association with AMD brings to light how mitochondrial genetics can influence disease outcome. As one of the most metabolically active tissues in the human body, there is strong evidence that disruption in key metabolic pathways contributes to AMD pathology. The section on retinal metabolism reviews cell-specific metabolic differences and how the metabolic interdependence of each retinal cell type creates a unique ecosystem that is disrupted in the diseased retina. The final discussion includes strategies for therapeutic interventions that target key mitochondrial pathways as a treatment for AMD.Aberrant regulation of epigenetic mechanisms, including the two most common types; DNA methylation and histone modification have been implicated in common chronic progressive conditions, including Alzheimer disease, cardiovascular disease, and age-related macular degeneration (AMD). All these conditions are complex, meaning that environmental factors, genetic factors, and their interactions play a role in disease pathophysiology. Although genome wide association studies (GWAS), and studies on twins demonstrate the genetic/hereditary component to these complex diseases, including AMD, this contribution is much less than 100%. Moreover, the contribution of the hereditary component decreases in the advanced, later onset forms of these chronic diseases including AMD. This underscores the need to elucidate how the genetic and environmental factors function to exert their influence on disease pathophysiology. By teasing out epigenetic mechanisms and how they exert their influence on AMD, therapeutic targets can be tailored to prevent and/or slow down disease progression. Epigenetic studies that incorporate well-characterized patient tissue samples (including affected tissues and peripheral blood), similar to those relevant to gene expression studies, along with genetic and epidemiological information, can be the first step in developing appropriate functional assays to validate findings and identify potential therapies.Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a major cause of blindness in older individuals worldwide. The disease is characterized by deposition of drusen between the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) and Bruch's membrane, RPE atrophy and death of photoreceptors. AMD is a complex disease with multiple genetic and non-genetic risk factors. Genome-wide association studies (GWAS) have identified 52 variants at 34 genetic loci associated with AMD. A majority of the AMD-GWAS variants are present in non-coding region of the genome and could quantitatively impact distinct human traits [called quantitative trait loci (QTLs)] by affecting regulation of gene expression. The integration of different regulatory features, such as open-chromatin regions, histone marks, transcription factor binding sites, with AMD-GWAS can provide meaningful insights into variant's function. However, functional interpretation of variant-gene relationship in AMD is challenging because of inadequate understanding of cell-type specific and context-dependent information in disease-relevant tissues. Here we focus on the role of sequencing-based omic studies in assigning biological meaning to disease-associated variants and genes. We also discuss the methods and model systems that can be utilized to unravel molecular mechanisms of a complex disorder like AMD.Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a multifactorial neurodegenerative disease, which is a leading cause of vision loss among the elderly in the developed countries. As one of the most successful examples of genome-wide association study (GWAS), a large number of genetic studies have been conducted to explore the genetic basis for AMD and its progression, of which over 30 loci were identified and confirmed. In this chapter, we review the recent development and findings of GWAS for AMD risk and progression. Then, we present emerging methods and models for predicting AMD development or its progression using large-scale genetic data. Finally, we discuss a set of novel statistical and analytical methods that were recently developed to tackle the challenges such as analyzing bilateral correlated eye-level outcomes that are subject to censoring with high-dimensional genetic data. We will also assess how interactions between the immune system and infectious pathogens could potentially modulate AMD pathobiology via alterations in in immune effector mechanisms.   • PURPOSE To develop and characterize a mouse model of spontaneous recurrent seizures following nerve agent-induced status epilepticus (SE) and test the efficacy of existing antiepileptic drugs. METHODS SE was induced in telemeterized male C57Bl6/J **** by soman exposure, and electroencephalographic activity was recorded for 4-6 weeks. **** were treated with antiepileptic drugs (levetiracetam, valproic acid, phenobarbital) or corresponding vehicles for 14 d after exposure, followed by 14 d of drug washout. Survival, body weight, seizure characteristics, and histopathology were used to characterize the acute and chronic effects of nerve agent exposure and to evaluate the efficacy of treatments in mitigating or preventing neurological effects. RESULTS Spontaneous recurrent seizures manifested in all survivors, but the number and frequency of seizures varied considerably among ****. In untreated ****, seizures became longer over time. Moderate to severe histopathology was observed in the amygdala, piriform cortex, and CA1. Levetiracetam provided modest improvements in neurological parameters such as reduced spike rate and improved histopathology scores, whereas valproic acid and phenobarbital were largely ineffective. CONCLUSIONS This model of post-SE spontaneous recurrent seizures differs from other experimental models in the brief latency to seizure development, the occurrence of seizures in 100 % of exposed animals, and the lack of damage to CA4/dentate gyrus. It may serve as a useful tool for rapidly and efficiently screening novel therapies that would be effective against severe epilepsy cases. We determined that a single chain in the asymmetric unit forms a pseudo-hexagonal network of triple helices that have a pitch variation consistent with the model 7/2 helix (3.5 residues per turn). The proline rings occupied one of two states, while the helix was found to have a well-defined hydration shell involved in the stabilization of the inter-helix crystal network. This structure offers a new high-resolution basis for understanding the hierarchical assembly of native collagens, which will aid the food industry in engineering new sustainable food systems. In recent years, aberration correction has slowly become standard in high-end conventional transmission electron microscopy (50-200 kV). However, the integration of correctors to low voltage transmission systems (5-25 kV) has proved to be difficult. The hexapole corrector based on permanent magnet technology seems to be a promising solution for the correction of the primary spherical aberration. Especially if the compact dimensions and low complexity are to be preserved. However, the high importance of chromatic aberration with respect to the microscope resolution still remains a serious obstacle. It must be taken into account when the design is made. The following presented concept is intended exclusively for STEM mode to avoid additional chromatic deterioration caused by electron passage through the sample. The design of the key segment (transfer lens doublet) is discussed in detail, including its compensation systems, which guarantees proper alignment. Gravity-driven membrane (GDM) filtration system is a promising process for decentralized drinking water treatment. During the operation, membrane relaxation and shear stress could be simply achieved by intermittent filtration and water disturbance (created by occasionally shaking membrane model or stirring water in membrane tank), respectively. To better understand the impact of membrane relaxation and shear stress on the biofouling layer and stable flux in GDM system, action of daily 60-min intermission, daily flushing (cross-flow velocity = 10 cm s-1, 1 min), and the combination of the two (flushed right after the 60-min intermission) were compared. The results showed that membrane relaxation and shear stress lonely was ineffective in improving the stable flux, while their combination enhanced the stable flux by 70%. A more open and spatially heterogeneous biofouling layer with a low extracellular polymeric substance (EPS) content and a high microbial activity was formed under the combination of membrane relaxation and shear stress. In-situ optical coherence tomography (OCT) observation revealed that, during intermission, the absence of pushing force by water flow induced a reversible expansion of biofouling layer, and the biofouling layer restored to its initial state soon after resuming filtration. Shear stress caused abrasion and erosion on the biofouling surface, but it exerted little effect on the interior of biofouling layer. Under the combination, however, both the surface and interior of biofouling layer were disturbed because of 1) the water vortexes caused by rough biofouling layer surface, and 2) the porous structure after 60-min intermission. This disturbance, in turn, helped the biofouling layer maintain its roughness and porosity, thereby improving the stable flux of GDM system.

  • The well-known Stroop interference effect has been instrumental in revealing the highly automated nature of lexical processing as well as providing new insights to the underlying lexical organization of first and second languages within proficient bilinguals. The present cross-linguistic study had two goals 1) to examine Stroop interference for dynamic signs and printed words in deaf ASL-English bilinguals who report no reliance on speech or audiological aids; 2) to compare Stroop interference effects in several groups of bilinguals whose two languages range from very distinct to very similar in their shared orthographic patterns ASL-English bilinguals (very distinct), Chinese-English bilinguals (low similarity), Korean-English bilinguals (moderate similarity), and Spanish-English bilinguals (high similarity). Reaction time and accuracy were measured for the Stroop color naming and word reading tasks, for congruent and incongruent color font conditions. We provide evidence that most people do not interpret statements about what one 'should say' as statements about assertability, but rather as statements about what is in the agent's interest to do. Measures for prompting the intended reading of the test question are identified, and their efficacy is tested. We found that when these measures are implemented, people's judgements consistently and overwhelmingly align with non-factive accounts of assertion.Current theories propose that our sense of curiosity is determined by the learning progress or information gain that our cognitive system expects to make. However, few studies have explicitly tried to quantify subjective information gain and link it to measures of curiosity. Here, we asked people to report their curiosity about the intrinsically engaging perceptual 'puzzles' known as Mooney images, and to report on the strength of their aha experience upon revealing the solution image (curiosity relief). We also asked our participants (279) to make a guess concerning the solution of the image, and used the distribution of these guesses to compute the crowdsourced semantic entropy (or ambiguity) of the images, as a measure of the potential for information gain. Our results confirm that curiosity and, even more so, aha experience is substantially associated with this semantic information gain measure. These findings support the expected information gain theory of curiosity and suggest that the aha experience or intrinsic reward is driven by the actual information gain. In an unannounced memory part, we also established that the often reported influence of curiosity on memory is fully mediated by the aha experience or curiosity relief. We discuss the implications of our results for the burgeoning fields of curiosity and psychoaesthetics.WRKY transcription factors are one of the largest transcriptional regulator families, involved in various signaling networks in plants. However, only limited functional exploration of the sugar signaling of Vitis vinifera WRKY22 transcription factor (VvWRKY22) has been conducted. In this study, the roles played by VvWRKY22 in sugar accumulation in grapes were investigated. VvWRKY22 was co-expressed with 16 sugar-related genes, and the expression of VvWRKY22 in grape suspension cells was inhibited by sucrose, and induced by fructose and abscisic acid (ABA). Results showed that over-expression of VvWRKY22 decreased the sucrose, glucose and fructose content, and regulated the expression levels of sugar and ABA-related genes. Moreover, it was found that VvWRKY22 interacted with VvSnRK1.1 or VvSnRK1.2 proteins (Sucrose non-fermenting-1-related protein kinase 1), which are important kinases related to sugar metabolism. These results, thus, provide new genetic evidences to support the view that VvWRKY22 functions in regulating sugar metabolism in grapes.Promyelocytic leukemia protein (PML) nuclear bodies (NBs) are dynamic and multiprotein complexes implicated in a variety of important biochemical events. Due to alternative mRNA splicing, PML has at least six nuclear isoforms that share a common N-terminus but differ in their C-terminal regions. However, the unique role of each PML isoform is not clear. Here, we report the characterization of the deubiquitinase ataxin-3 as a specific binding partner of PML isoform II (PML-II). Ataxin-3 was identified as a potential binding protein of PML-II in a yeast-hybrid screen employing the unique C-terminal region of PML-II as bait. Ataxin-3 only binds to the C-terminal region of PML-II and not that of other PML isoforms. The interaction between ataxin-3 and PML-II was confirmed by co-immunoprecipition assays, and immunofluorescent microscopy revealed that PML-II and ataxin-3 were co-localized in PML-NBs. In addition, PML-II not only interacts with ataxin-3 with a normal range of poly-Q repeats (13Q), but also with a pathological form of ataxin-3 with extended poly-Q repeats (79Q). Importantly, the deubiquitinase activity of ataxin-3 was inhibited by PML-II. Our results suggest that PML-II may be a negative regulator of ataxin-3.Inflammation is a pivotal pathological factor in colorectal cancer (CRC) initiation and progression, and modulating this inflammatory state has the potential to ameliorate disease progression. NR4A receptors have emerged as key regulators of inflammatory pathways that are important in CRC. Here, we have examined the effect of NR4A agonist, Cytosporone B (CsnB), on colorectal tissue integrity and its effect on the inflammatory profile in CRC tissue ex vivo. Here, we demonstrate concentrations up 100 μM CsnB did not adversely affect tissue integrity as measured using transepithelial electrical resistance, histology and crypt height. Subsequently, we reveal through the use of a cytokine/chemokine array, ELISA and qRT-PCR analysis that multiple pro-inflammatory mediators were significantly increased in CRC tissue compared to control tissue, which were then attenuated with the addition of CsnB (such as IL-1β, IL-8 and TNFα). Lastly, stratification of the data revealed that CsnB especially alters the inflammatory profile of tumours derived from males who had not undergone chemoradiotherapy.

Ataxin-3 was identified as a potential binding protein of PML-II in a yeast-hybrid screen employing the unique C-terminal region of PML-II as bait. Ataxin-3 only binds to the C-terminal region of PML-II and not that of other PML isoforms. To detect trends, the perioperative outcome was calculated separately for the years 2010 to 2019 and the 1-year follow-up for the years 2010 to 2018 and significant differences were identified. Analysis was based on 25,518 primary elective epigastric hernia repairs. The rates of postoperative surgical complications, pain at rest, pain on exertion, chronic pain requiring treatment and recurrence associated with the various surgical techniques were calculated separately for each year.

  • Biofilm formation (BF) and production in the food processing industry (FPI) is a continual threat to food safety and quality. Various bacterial pathogens possess the ability to adhere and produce biofilms on stainless steel (SS) in the FPI due to flagella, curli, pili, fimbrial adhesins, extra polymeric substances, and surface proteins. The facilitating environmental conditions (temperature, pressure, variations in climatic conditions), SS properties (surface energy, hydrophobicity, surface roughness, topography), type of raw food materials, pre-processing, and processing conditions play a significant role in the enhancement of bacterial adhesion and favorable condition for BF. Furthermore, biofilm formers can tolerate different sanitizers and cleaning agents due to the constituents, concentration, contact time, bacterial cluster distribution, and composition of bacteria within the biofilm. Also, bacterial biofilms' ability to produce various endotoxins and exotoxins when consumed cause food infections and intoxications with serious health implications. This result is evidence that global confidence judgment was based on an integration of confidence information across multiple perceptual decisions rather than on a single one. Furthermore, we found a tendency for global confidence choices to be influenced by response times, and more so for recent perceptual decisions than earlier ones in the series of stimuli. Initial evidence suggests that predicting boosts surprise about unexpected answers, which leads to enhanced attention to the correct answer and strengthens its encoding. I propose that it is this affective aspect of predicting that sets it apart from other retrieval-based learning strategies, particularly from guessing. Predicting should thus be considered as a learning strategy in its own right. We found that performance for B_Unaware participants was below chance level using unbiased tests. This was further confirmed using a resampling procedure with multiple iterations, contrary to the prediction of RTM effects.

  • The diffusion of laboratory automation, initiated nearly 50 years ago with consolidation of preanalytical, clinical chemistry and immunochemistry workstations, is now also gradually embracing mass spectrometry (MS). As for other diagnostic disciplines, the automation of MS carries many advantages, such as efficient personnel management (i.e. improving working atmosphere by decreasing manual activities, lowering health risks, simplifying staff training), better organization (i.e. reducing workloads, improving inventory handling, increasing analytical process standardization) and the possibility to reduce the number of platforms. The development and integration of different technologies into automated MS analyzers will also generate technical and practical advantages, such as prepackaged and ready-to-use reagents, automated dispensing, incubation and measurement, automated sample processing (e.g. system fit for many models of laboratory automation, bar code readers), multiplex testing, automatic data processing, also including quality control assessment, and automated validation/interpretation (e.g. autoverification). A new generation of preanalytical workstations, which can be directly connected to MS systems, will allow the automation of manual extraction and elimination of time-consuming activities, such as tube labeling and capping/decapping. The use of automated liquid-handling platform for pipetting samples, along with addition of internal standards, may then enable the optimization of some steps of extraction and protein precipitation, thus decreasing turnaround time and increasing throughput in MS testing. Therefore, this focused review is aimed at providing a brief update on the importance of consolidation and integration of MS platforms in laboratory automation.BACKGROUND In chronical neurological diseases, especially in multiple sclerosis (MS), clinical assessment of motor dysfunction is crucial to monitor patients' disease. The results of this study revealed that 91 out of 198 (45.9%) sputum positive pulmonary TB patients were anemic, and among those 72 (79.1%) had iron deficiency anemia. The overall prevalence of IDA in this study was 36.3%. In 72 patients with IDA, 54 (75%) had functional while the remainder had absolute IDA 18 (25%). The skills of the advanced practice nurse are mobilised in this context in order to carry out prevention missions and screening for potential sequelae which could lead to chronic respiratory failure.The first advanced practice nurses in psychiatry and mental health are being deployed across the country. Such is the case at Paris XV psychiatric university hospital, which is working to gradually integrate an advanced practice nurse into medico-psychological centres to work with patients with schizophrenia.     An electronic survey on repairing or replacing defective restorations was developed to assess how clinicians are making these decisions and the technical aspects considered when making a repair. E-mails containing the survey link were sent to the American Dental Association Clinical Evaluators (ACE) Panel on August 14, 2019, and the survey remained open for 2 weeks. Nonrespondents were sent reminders 1 week after deployment.

The top 3 conditions for making these repairs were noncarious marginal defects (87%), partial loss or fracture of the restoration (79%), and crown margin repair due to carious lesions (73%).     We used a matched cohort study design among patients 65 years or older (n= 2,578) with an index dental visit to the Kaiser Permanente Northwest medical-dental integration (MDI) program from June 1, 2018, through December 31, 2019. MDI patients were matched 11 to non-MDI controls (n= 2,578) on 14 characteristics. The Kaiser Permanente Northwest MDI program focuses on closing 23 preventive (for example, flu vaccines) and disease management care gaps (for example, glycated hemoglobin testing) within the dental setting. The closure of all care gaps (yes versus no) was the outcome for the analysis. Multivariable logistic regression was used to evaluate the association between exposure to the MDI program and level of office integration (least, moderate, and most integration) with closure of care gaps. All data were obtained through Kaiser Permanente Northwest's electronic health record.

    MDI patients had significantly higher odds (odds ratio [OR],1.46, 95% confidence interval [CI],1.29 to 1.65) of closing all medical care gaps than non-MDI patients. Greater MDI integration was associated with significantly higher odds of gap closure compared with non-MDI (least integration OR,1.18, 95% CI,1.02 to 1.37; moderate integration OR,1.70, 95% CI, 1.36 to 2.12; most integration OR, 2.08, 95% CI, 1.73 to 2.50).
