The purpose of the present study was to examine the role of perceptions of approval (i.e., injunctive norms), and acceptability (i.e., descriptive norms and perceived harm) in the relationship between marijuana availability and marijuana use.

    Data collected from 2009 to 2013 included 3498 AI 7th-12th graders residing on or near a reservation (47.8 % female). Multilevel mediation analyses were conducted using the MLmed macro in IBM SPSS v26.0 to account for the nesting of data within schools.

    Among adult college students in the US, cannabis use is common and associated with considerable negative consequences to health, cognition, and academic functioning, underscoring the importance of identifying risk and protective factors. Cannabis use is influenced by genetic factors, but genetic risk is not determinative. Accordingly, it is critical to identify environments that reduce risk among those who are at elevated genetic risk. This study examined the impact of polygenic scores for cannabis initiation, various forms of social activity participation, and peer deviance on recent cannabis use. Our aim was to test whether these environments moderate genetic risk for cannabis use.

    During training, service members routinely walk with heavy body borne loads for long periods of time. These loads alter knee biomechanics and may produce jerky knee motions that reportedly increase joint loading and risk of musculoskeletal injury. Yet, it is unknown if service members use jerky knee motions during prolong walking with body borne load.

  • Patients with Idiopathic Parkinson's Disease (PD) have an increased risk for fractures. Currently, many studies have reported inferior outcomes in PD patients after orthopedic procedures. However, there are very few studies assessing the outcome of upper extremity fractures (UEF) in PD patients. In this study, we reviewed 40 patients with PD that received surgical intervention for an UEF. We retrospectively reviewed patients with PD that received surgical fixation for an UEF at a tertiary trauma center. The primary objective was to determine the treatment failure rate after surgical fixation. The secondary outcomes include mode of failure, time to treatment failure, length of hospital stay, readmission rate, reoperation rate, and postoperative complications. A total of 40 patients with PD (42 fractures) underwent surgery. The most common fracture type was radius fracture (n = 19), followed by humerus fracture (n = 15), metacarpal/phalangeal fracture (n = 5), clavicle fracture (n = 2) and olecranon fracture (n = 1). The overall treatment failure rate was 40.5% (n = 17). The time to treatment failure was 1.24 ± 3.1 months and length of hospital stay was 6 ± 3.9 days, the readmission rate within 30 days was 14% (n = 6), and reoperation rate was 14% (n = 6). https://www.selleckchem.com/products/rilematovir.html The complication rate was 16.6% (n = 7) and patients with humeral fractures appeared to have the longest hospital stays (6.6 days) and increased complication rates (13%, n = 2). In this multicenter and observational study, all β-thalassemia patients, who referred to 14 hospital-based thalassemia divisions or clinics in Mazandaran province, Iran were included in the study. The data belong to December 2015 until December 2019. The study population was made of transfusion dependent thalassemia (TDT) and non-transfusion-dependent thalassemia (NTDT) patients. Serum levels of 25-OHD3 have been measured by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) method as ng/mL. Demographic and clinical information along with some biological tests, as well as the results of T2*-weighted magnetic resonance imaging were analyzed. Of 1959 registered patients, 487 (24.9%) patients had Vit-D-related data. The prevalence of Vit-D insufficiency ( less then  30 ng/mL) was 41.9, 95% CI 37.5-46.3. The adjusted risks of moderate to severe liver siderosis and raised AST (aspartate aminotransferase) for Vit-D insufficiency ( less then  30 ng/mL) were 2.31, 95% CI 1.38-3.89 and 2.62, 95% CI 1.43-4.79, respectively. The receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis showed that the predictive accuracy of ferritin for Vit-D insufficiency status was 0.61, 95% CI 0.54-0.68 with a cutoff point of 1,078 ng/mL (P = 0.03, sensitivity 67%, specificity 49%, positive predictive value [PPV] 47% and negative predictive value [NPV] 68%). In spite of the national programs for treating Vit-D deficiency and our previous efforts for giving supplements to all patients, Vit-D insufficiency/deficiency is still common in our patients. Little is known on the effects induced by the activation of cutaneous afferents from the face on the DPPS of the face. Therefore, we tested the effect of non-painful transcutaneous trigeminal nerve stimulation (TNS) on the amplitude of the HBR. Fifteen healthy participants underwent HBR recording before and after 20 min of sham- and real-TNS delivered bilaterally to the infraorbital nerve in two separate sessions. The HBR was recorded bilaterally from the orbicularis oculi muscles, following non-painful median nerve stimulation at the wrist. The HBR amplitude was assessed in the "hand-far" and "hand-near" conditions, relative to the hand position in respect to the face. The amplitudes of the hand-far and hand-near HBR were measured bilaterally before and after sham- and real-TNS. Real-TNS significantly reduced the magnitude of the HBR, while sham-TNS had no significant effect. The inhibitory effect of TNS was of similar extent on both the hand-far and hand-near components of the HBR, which suggests an action exerted mainly at brainstem level.Two field experiments were conducted concurrently in 2019. The study investigated the effects of single and combined application of wood biochar (WB) and *** dung biochar (CDB) with green manure (GM) on soil properties, performance, and tuber qualities of tiger nut. The treatments consisted of CDB at 10 t ha-1, WB at 10 t ha-1, GM-Tithonia diversifolia at 10 t ha-1, CDB + GM, WB + GM, control. The six treatments were arranged in RCBD with three replications. CDB, WB, and GM either sole or combined increased moisture content, SOC, nutrient contents, culturable microorganisms, performance, moisture, ash, fiber, and protein contents of the tiger nut compared with the control. CDB has a higher N, C N ratio, P, K, Ca, Mg, CEC, and pH relative to. CDB alone and CDB + GM increased growth and yield compared with WB alone and WB + GM. CDB + GM has the highest value of growth and yield of tiger nut. GM alone improved growth and yield of tiger nut compared with the two sole biochar treatments. CDB + GM and WB + GM increased growth and yield of tiger nut compared with their sole forms. This was adduced to biochar allowing the retention of nutrients from rapidly decomposing Tithonia within the rooting zone, thereby promoting better effectiveness of nutrient uptake and increase in yield. Therefore, for good soil fertility and tiger nut yield, it is important that the addition of a fast releasing nutrient source to biochar be sought.

Here, we report an exceedingly rare case of CAT as an atypical mobile mass in the ascending aorta in a 62-year-old man who was on hemodialysis for 11 years. The CAT grew rapidly within 3 months. We resected the mass, and he was discharged with no complications. This report shows that the CAT can grow rapidly, even in the aorta, and provides important information on the progression of this rare disease and its clinical features.Primary aortic tumors after endovascular aortic repair are rarely reported in the literature. Here, we report an elderly male with abdominal aortic leiomyosarcomas (LMS) after an endovascular aneurysm repair in 2012 for a 5-cm symptomatic abdominal aortic aneurysm using an Endurant II aortic stent graft (Medtronic, Minneapolis, Minn). The autopsy confirmed the aortic LMS after the patient rapidly deteriorated and succumbed to death. The vascular LMS are rapidly progressive and diagnostically challenging malignant soft tissue tumors with poor prognosis, which necessitates a strong clinical suspicion and attentiveness to radiologic signs for prompt diagnosis.The management of popliteal artery aneurysms (PAAs) has continued to evolve. Open surgical treatment remains an excellent option. Aneurysm exclusion with saphenous vein bypass through a medial incision remains a preferred approach. After PAA exclusion, however, a possibility remains of sac expansion from geniculate arterial branches. This can mimic a type II endoleak occurring after endovascular aortic aneurysm repair. The documented anthropometry parameter of the 5th, 50th, 75th, and 95th percentile distribution of Nigerian paraplegics were retrieved and used in the design. The developed wheelchair was powered by a battery that converts the system from the wheelchair mode (sitting mode) to the bed (sleeping/relaxation) mode or vice versa. The average conversion rate of the dual-purpose wheelchair from bed mode to sitting mode and sitting mode to bed mode at no load is about 149.7 s and 163.6 s respectively with a standard error of ±0.2 s. Also, the average conversion rate from sitting mode to bed/sleeping mode and bed mode to sitting mode under load is about 150.4 s and 166 s respectively. The ergonomic suitability and comfortability were determined from the computed average acceleration (ARMS), vibration dose value (VDV), and weighted acceleration value (AWRMS). The result from the performance test shows that the average acceleration falls between the range of 0.10 m/s2 and 0.29 m/s2 and the vibration dose value (VDV) ranges between 0.01 m/s1.75 and 1.35 m/s1.75. The weighted acceleration (Aweighted) was also computed and found to be between the range of 0.01 m/s2 and 0.35 m/s2 vibration value. Thus, attesting that the dual-purpose wheelchair design is ergonomically correct and safe to be used. High throughput virtual screening was performed on compounds, and 86 of them with docking score  less then   - 5.000 kcal mol-1 were subjected to standard-precision docking. Based on binding energies ( less then  - 6.000 kcal mol-1), 9 compounds were further shortlisted and subjected to extra-precision docking. Free energy calculation by Prime-MM/GBSA suggested RC002, GA004, and GA006 as the most potent inhibitors of 3CLpro. Here, we report an exceedingly rare case of CAT as an atypical mobile mass in the ascending aorta in a 62-year-old man who was on hemodialysis for 11 years. The CAT grew rapidly within 3 months. We resected the mass, and he was discharged with no complications. This report shows that the CAT can grow rapidly, even in the aorta, and provides important information on the progression of this rare disease and its clinical features.Primary aortic tumors after endovascular aortic repair are rarely reported in the literature. Here, we report an elderly male with abdominal aortic leiomyosarcomas (LMS) after an endovascular aneurysm repair in 2012 for a 5-cm symptomatic abdominal aortic aneurysm using an Endurant II aortic stent graft (Medtronic, Minneapolis, Minn). The autopsy confirmed the aortic LMS after the patient rapidly deteriorated and succumbed to death. The vascular LMS are rapidly progressive and diagnostically challenging malignant soft tissue tumors with poor prognosis, which necessitates a strong clinical suspicion and attentiveness to radiologic signs for prompt diagnosis.The management of popliteal artery aneurysms (PAAs) has continued to evolve. Open surgical treatment remains an excellent option. Aneurysm exclusion with saphenous vein bypass through a medial incision remains a preferred approach. After PAA exclusion, however, a possibility remains of sac expansion from geniculate arterial branches. This can mimic a type II endoleak occurring after endovascular aortic aneurysm repair.   • The comfort of patients with cancer near the end of life (EOL) is often undermined by unnecessary and burdensome treatments. There is a need for more research examining racial disparities in EOL care, especially in regions with a history of racial discrimination.

    To examine whether black adults received more burdensome EOL care than white adults in a population-based data set of cancer decedents in Louisiana, a state with a history of slavery and long-standing racial disparities.

    This was a retrospective analysis of EOL care from the Research Action for Health Network (REACHnet), a regional Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute-funded database. The sample consisted of 875 white and 415 black patients with metastatic cancer who died in Louisiana from 2011 to 2017. We used logistic regression to examine whether race was associated with five indicators of burdensome care in the last 30days of life chemotherapy use, inpatient hospitalization, intensive care unit admission, emergency department (ED) admission, and mechanical ventilation.

    Most patients (85.0%) received at least one indicator of burdensome care hospitalization (76.5%), intensive care unit admission (44.1%), chemotherapy (29.1%), mechanical ventilation (23.0%), and ED admission (18.3%). Odds ratios (ORs) indicated that black individuals were more likely than white individuals to be hospitalized (OR=1.66; 95% CI= 1.21-2.28; P=0.002) or admitted to the ED (OR=1.57; 95% CI= 1.16-2.13; P=0.004) during their last month of life.

Moreover, Tetracycline (Tet) specific resistance genes, genetic mutations in Tet target sites, and sequence types (ST) profiles of clinical isolates of S. agalactiae were investigated with polymerase chain reaction (PCR) experiments. The heteroresistance frequency of Erava and Tig in S. agalactiae was analyzed by population analysis profiling. Furthermore, the resistance mechanisms of both Erava and Tig were investigated in antibiotic-induced resistant S. agalactiae isolates in vitro.

Here, we systematically study how alterations of the local and long-range connectivity matrices affect the spatial patterns of connectome harmonics. Specifically, the proportion of local gray matter homogeneous connectivity versus long-range white-matter heterogeneous connectivity is varied by means of weight-based matrix thresholding, distance-based matrix trimming, and several types of matrix randomizations. We demonstrate that the proportion of local gray matter connections plays a crucial role for the emergence of wide-spread, functionally meaningful, and originally published connectome harmonic patterns. This finding is robust for several different cortical surface templates, mesh resolutions, or widths of the local diffusion kernel. Finally, using the connectome harmonic framework, we also provide a proof-of-concept for how targeted structural changes such as the atrophy of inter-hemispheric callosal fibers and gray matter alterations may predict functional deficits associated with neurodegenerative conditions.Parasitic wasps and their larval hosts are intimately connected by an array of behavioral adaptations and counter-adaptations. This co-evolution has led to highly specific, natural variation in learning rates and memory consolidation in parasitoid wasps. Similarly, the hosts of the parasitoids show specific sensory adaptations as well as non-associative learning strategies for parasitoid avoidance. However, these neuronal and behavioral adaptations of both hosts and wasps have so far been studied largely apart from each other. Here we argue that a parallel investigation of the nervous system in wasps and their hosts might lead to novel insights into the evolution of insect behavior and the neurobiology of learning and memory.

  • The putative biosynthesis pathway of butane-2,3-diol and acetoin, two important flavour compounds in the food industry, were identified using kegg mapper analysis. Based on its genotypic and phenotypic features, strain HBUAS57009T (=GDMCC 1.1664T=KACC 21424T) is designated as the type strain of a novel species, for which the name Lactobacillus enshiensis sp. nov. is proposed.Strain JC651T was isolated from a sediment sample collected from Chilika lagoon, which is one of the world's most important brackish water lakes with estuarine characteristics. Colonies of this strain are light pink and cells are Gram-stain negative, spherical to pear shaped and form rosettes. Strain JC651T grows well up to pH 9.0 and tolerates up to 5 % NaCl (w/v). The respiratory quinone is MK6. The detected major fatty acids are C18  1 ω9c and C16  0. Its polar lipids are diphosphatidylglycerol, an unidentified phospholipid, phosphatidylglycerol and phosphatidylcholine. Strain JC651T shows highest 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity (97.8%) to the type species of the genus Roseimaritima, Roseimaritima ulvae UC8T. The genome size of strain JC651T is 6.2 Mb with a G+C content of 62.4 mol%. For the resolution of the phylogenetic congruence of the novel strain, the phylogeny was also reconstructed with the sequences of 92 core genes. Based on the phylogenetic analyses, low digital DNA-DNA hybridization values (19.5%), low (74.9%) genome average nucleotide identity results, chemotaxonomic characteristics and differential physiological properties, strain JC651T is recognized as a new species of the genus Roseimaritima for which we propose the name Roseimaritima sediminicola sp. nov. The type strain is JC651T (=KCTC 72178T=NBRC 113926T).A piezotolerant, H2O2-tolerant, heavy-metal-tolerant, slightly halophilic bacterium (strain NBT06E8T) was isolated from a deep-sea sediment sample collected from the New Britain Trench at depth of 8900 m. The strain was aerobic, motile, Gram-stain-negative, rod-shaped, oxidase-positive and catalase-positive. Growth of the strain was observed at 4-45 °C (optimum, 30 °C), at pH 5-11 (optimum, pH 8-9) and in 0.5-21 % (w/v) NaCl (optimum, 3-7 %). The optimum pressure for growth was 0.1-30 MPa with tolerance up to 60 MPa. Under optimum growth conditions, the strain could tolerate 15 mM H2O2. Resuls of 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis showed that strain NBT06E8T is closely related to Halomonas aquamarina DSM 30161T (99.5%), Halomonas meridiana DSM 5425T (99.43%) and Halomonas axialensis Althf1T (99.35%). The digital DNA-DNA hybridization values between strain NBT06E8T and the three related type strains, H. aquamarina, H. meridiana and H. axialensis, were 30.5±2.4 %, 30.7±2.5% and 31.5±2.5 %, respectively. The average nucleotide identity values between strain NBT06E8T and the three related type strains were 86.26, 86.26 and 83.63 %, respectively. In this study, we provide a revision of the actinobacterial family Streptosporangiaceae using a large collection of genome data and phylogenomics approaches. The phylogenomic analyses included the publicly available genome data of the members of the family Streptosporangiaceae and the state-of-the-art tools are used to infer the taxonomic affiliation of these species within the family. By comparing genome-based and 16S rRNA gene-based trees, as well as pairwise genome comparisons, the recently described genera Spongiactinospora and Desertactinospora are combined in the genus Spongiactinospora. In conclusion, a comprehensive phylogenomic revision of the family Streptosporangiaceae is proposed.During pregnancy, changes occur to influence the maternal gut microbiome, and potentially the fetal microbiome. Diet has been shown to impact the gut microbiome. Little research has been conducted examining diet during pregnancy with respect to the gut microbiome. To meet inclusion criteria, dietary analyses must have been conducted as part of the primary aim. The primary outcome was the composition of the gut microbiome (infant or maternal), as assessed using culture-independent sequencing techniques. This review identified seven studies for inclusion, five examining the maternal gut microbiome and two examining the fetal gut microbiome. Microbial data were attained through analysis of stool samples by 16S rRNA gene-based microbiota assessment. Studies found an association between the maternal diet and gut microbiome. High-fat diets (% fat of total energy), fat-soluble vitamins (mg/day) and fibre (g/day) were the most significant nutrients associated with the gut microbiota composition of both neonates and mothers. High-fat diets were significantly associated with a reduction in microbial diversity. High-fat diets may reduce microbial diversity, while fibre intake may be positively associated with microbial diversity. The results of this review must be interpreted with caution. The number of studies was low, and the risk of observational bias and heterogeneity across the studies must be considered. However, these results show promise for dietary intervention and microbial manipulation in order to favour an increase of health-associated taxa in the gut of the mother and her offspring.Kawasaki disease is an acute febrile medium-vessel vasculitis affecting children. Based on its genotypic and phenotypic features, strain HBUAS57009T (=GDMCC 1.1664T=KACC 21424T) is designated as the type strain of a novel species, for which the name Lactobacillus enshiensis sp. nov. is proposed.Strain JC651T was isolated from a sediment sample collected from Chilika lagoon, which is one of the world's most important brackish water lakes with estuarine characteristics. Colonies of this strain are light pink and cells are Gram-stain negative, spherical to pear shaped and form rosettes. Strain JC651T grows well up to pH 9.0 and tolerates up to 5 % NaCl (w/v). The respiratory quinone is MK6. The detected major fatty acids are C18  1 ω9c and C16  0. Its polar lipids are diphosphatidylglycerol, an unidentified phospholipid, phosphatidylglycerol and phosphatidylcholine. Strain JC651T shows highest 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity (97.8%) to the type species of the genus Roseimaritima, Roseimaritima ulvae UC8T. The genome size of strain JC651T is 6.2 Mb with a G+C content of 62.4 mol%. For the resolution of the phylogenetic congruence of the novel strain, the phylogeny was also reconstructed with the sequences of 92 core genes. Based on the phylogenetic analyses, low digital DNA-DNA hybridization values (19.5%), low (74.9%) genome average nucleotide identity results, chemotaxonomic characteristics and differential physiological properties, strain JC651T is recognized as a new species of the genus Roseimaritima for which we propose the name Roseimaritima sediminicola sp. nov. The type strain is JC651T (=KCTC 72178T=NBRC 113926T).A piezotolerant, H2O2-tolerant, heavy-metal-tolerant, slightly halophilic bacterium (strain NBT06E8T) was isolated from a deep-sea sediment sample collected from the New Britain Trench at depth of 8900 m. The strain was aerobic, motile, Gram-stain-negative, rod-shaped, oxidase-positive and catalase-positive. Growth of the strain was observed at 4-45 °C (optimum, 30 °C), at pH 5-11 (optimum, pH 8-9) and in 0.5-21 % (w/v) NaCl (optimum, 3-7 %). The optimum pressure for growth was 0.1-30 MPa with tolerance up to 60 MPa. Under optimum growth conditions, the strain could tolerate 15 mM H2O2. Resuls of 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis showed that strain NBT06E8T is closely related to Halomonas aquamarina DSM 30161T (99.5%), Halomonas meridiana DSM 5425T (99.43%) and Halomonas axialensis Althf1T (99.35%). The digital DNA-DNA hybridization values between strain NBT06E8T and the three related type strains, H. aquamarina, H. meridiana and H. axialensis, were 30.5±2.4 %, 30.7±2.5% and 31.5±2.5 %, respectively. The average nucleotide identity values between strain NBT06E8T and the three related type strains were 86.26, 86.26 and 83.63 %, respectively. The phylogenomic analyses included the publicly available genome data of the members of the family Streptosporangiaceae and the state-of-the-art tools are used to infer the taxonomic affiliation of these species within the family. By comparing genome-based and 16S rRNA gene-based trees, as well as pairwise genome comparisons, the recently described genera Spongiactinospora and Desertactinospora are combined in the genus Spongiactinospora. Diet has been shown to impact the gut microbiome. Little research has been conducted examining diet during pregnancy with respect to the gut microbiome. To meet inclusion criteria, dietary analyses must have been conducted as part of the primary aim. The primary outcome was the composition of the gut microbiome (infant or maternal), as assessed using culture-independent sequencing techniques. This review identified seven studies for inclusion, five examining the maternal gut microbiome and two examining the fetal gut microbiome. Microbial data were attained through analysis of stool samples by 16S rRNA gene-based microbiota assessment. Studies found an association between the maternal diet and gut microbiome. High-fat diets (% fat of total energy), fat-soluble vitamins (mg/day) and fibre (g/day) were the most significant nutrients associated with the gut microbiota composition of both neonates and mothers. High-fat diets were significantly associated with a reduction in microbial diversity. High-fat diets may reduce microbial diversity, while fibre intake may be positively associated with microbial diversity. The results of this review must be interpreted with caution. The number of studies was low, and the risk of observational bias and heterogeneity across the studies must be considered. This paper evaluates the performance of one such support, the micronutrient subsidy program in the state of Andhra Pradesh (AP) and presents a case for providing this support in the form of direct cash transfers. Under the program, key soil micronutrients- zinc, boron, and gypsum were distributed free of cost to farmers living in micronutrient-deficient areas, with identification and targeting managed entirely by the state. We survey 1621 farmers, 61 agriculture extension officers, and 78 agriculture input dealers to assess the efficacy of the program and to identify bottlenecks preventing effective targeting, with a focus on zinc. We find that use of non-subsidized zinc is high in AP, and awareness of benefits of zinc and physical access to input dealer shops are significant predictors of zinc use. We argue that the free provision of micronutrients may have created demand among farmers, but there is little justification to continue subsidizing such a program at such high rates or resorting to public distribution. We find that micronutrient procurement and distribution has become a burden on extension staff and crowds out the private sector. Our analysis shows that the subsidy can benefit more farmers if it is channeled through the network of private fertilizer dealers. We use administrative data on budgetary outlays and digital soil maps to suggest fiscal redistribution in the form of direct cash transfers that may ensure more effective targeting at a lower cost to the state.Establishing a natural communication interface between the user and the terminal device is one of the central challenges of hand neuroprosthetics research. Surface electromyography (EMG) is the most common source of neural signals for interpreting a user's intent in these interfaces. However, how the capacity of EMG generation is affected by various clinical parameters remains largely unknown. In this study, we examined the EMG activity of forearm muscles recorded from 11 transradially amputated subjects who performed a wide range of movements. EMG recordings from 40 able-bodied subjects were also analyzed to provide comparative benchmarks. By using non-negative matrix factorization, we extracted the synergistic EMG patterns for each subject to estimate the dimensionality of muscle control, under the framework of motor synergies. We found that amputees exhibited less than four synergies (with substantial variability related to the length of remaining limb and age), whereas able-bodied subjects commonly demonstrate five or more synergies. The results of this study provide novel insight into the muscle synergy framework and the design of natural myoelectric control interfaces.Recent evidence suggests that reward prediction errors (RPEs) play an important role in declarative learning, but its neurophysiological mechanism remains unclear. Using a between-subject (real versus sham stimulation group), single-blind stimulation design, 76 participants learned 60 Dutch-Swahili word pairs, while theta-frequency (6 Hz) tACS was administered over the medial frontal cortex (MFC). Previous studies have implicated ****in memory encoding. We replicated our previous finding of signed RPEs (SRPEs) boosting declarative learning; with larger and more positive RPEs enhancing memory performance. However, tACS failed to modulate the SRPE effect in declarative learning and did not affect memory performance. Bayesian statistics supported evidence for an absence of effect. Our study confirms a role of RPE in declarative learning, but also calls for standardized procedures in transcranial electrical stimulation.
    Mexico is still in the growing phase of the epidemic of coronary heart disease (CHD), with mortality increasing by 48% since 1980. However, no studies have analyzed the drivers of these trends. We aimed to model CHD deaths between 2000 and 2012 in Mexico and to quantify the proportion of the mortality change attributable to advances in medical treatments and to changes in population-wide cardiovascular risk factors.

Most of the mortality increases could be attributed to increases in population risk factors, such as diabetes (43%), physical inactivity (28%) and total cholesterol (24%). Improvements in medical and surgical treatments together prevented or postponed 40.3% of deaths; 10% was attributable to improvements in secondary prevention treatments following MI, while 5.3% to community heart failure treatments.

  • Nutraceuticals, natural dietary and botanical supplements offering health benefits, provide a basis for complementary and alternative medicine (CAM). Use of CAM by healthy individuals and patients with medical conditions is rapidly increasing. For the majority of breast cancer patients, treatment plans involve 5-10 yrs of endocrine therapy, but hair loss/thinning is a common side effect. Many women consider this significant, severely impacting on quality of life, even leading to non-compliance of therapy. Therefore, nutraceuticals that stimulate/maintain hair growth can be proposed. Although nutraceuticals are often available without prescription and taken at the discretion of patients, physicians can be reluctant to recommend them, even as adjuvants, since potential interactions with endocrine therapy have not been fully elucidated. It is, therefore, important to understand the modus operandi of ingredients to be confident that their use will not interfere/interact with therapy. The aim is to improve clinical/healthcare outcomes by combining specific nutraceuticals with conventional care whilst avoiding detrimental interactions. This review presents the current understanding of nutraceuticals beneficial to hair wellness and outcomes concerning efficacy/safety in breast cancer patients. We will focus on describing endocrine therapy and the role of estrogens in cancer and hair growth before evaluating the effects of natural ingredients on breast cancer and hair growth.Chitosan membranes were prepared by the casting method combined with alkali treatment. The molecular weight of chitosan and the alkali treatment influenced the water content and water permeability of the chitosan membranes. The water content increased as the NaOH concentration was increased from 1 to 5 mol/L. The water permeation flux of chitosan membranes with three different molecular weights increased linearly with the operating pressure and was highest for the membrane formed from chitosan with the lowest molecular weight. Membranes with a lower water content had a higher water flux. The membranes blocked 100% of compounds with molecular weights above methyl orange (MW = 327 Da). At 60 ≤ MW ≤ 600, the blocking rate strongly depended on the substance. The results confirmed that the membranes are suitable for compound separation, such as in purification and wastewater treatment.Streptococcus agalactiae (group B Streptococcus, GBS) represents a leading cause of invasive bacterial infections in newborns and is also responsible for diseases in older and immunocompromised adults. Prophages represent an important factor contributing to the genome plasticity and evolution of new strains. In the present study, prophage content was analyzed in human GBS isolates. Thirty-seven prophages were identified in genomes of 20 representative sequenced strains. On the basis of the sequence comparison, we divided the prophages into eight groups named A-H. This division also corresponded to the clustering of phage integrase, even though several different integration sites were observed in some relative prophages. Next, PCR method was used for detection of the prophages in 123 GBS strains from adult hospitalized patients and from pregnancy screening. At least one prophage was present in 105 isolates (85%). The highest prevalence was observed for prophage group A (71%) and satellite prophage group B (62%). Other groups were detected infrequently (1-6%). Prophage distribution did not differ between clinical and screening strains, but it was unevenly distributed in MLST (multi locus sequence typing) sequence types. High content of full-length and satellite prophages detected in present study implies that prophages could be beneficial for the host bacterium and could contribute to evolution of more adapted strains.The embryonal renal cancer Wilms tumor (WT) accounts for 7% of all children's malignancies. Its most frequent molecular defect is represented by DNA methylation abnormalities at the imprinted 11p15.5 region. Multiple imprinted methylation alterations dictated by chromosome copy-number variations have been recently demonstrated in adult cancers, raising the question of whether multiple imprinted loci were also affected in WT. To address this issue, we analyzed DNA methylation and chromosome profiles of 7 imprinted loci in 48 WT samples. The results demonstrated that methylation abnormalities of multiple imprinted loci occurred in 35% of the cases, but that they were associated with either chromosome aberrations or normal chromosome profiles. Multiple imprinted methylation changes were correlated with tumor stage and presence of metastasis, indicating that these epimutations were more frequent in highly aggressive tumors. When chromosome profiles were affected, these alterations were extended to flanking cancer driver genes. Overall, this study demonstrates the presence of multiple imprinted methylation defects in aggressive WTs and suggests that the mechanism by which they arise in embryonal and adult cancers is different.Prostate-specific membrane antigen (PSMA) ligand PET/CT enables the localization of tumor lesions in patients with recurrent prostate cancer, but it is unclear whether androgen deprivation therapy (ADT) influences diagnostic accuracy. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of ADT on the detection rate of 68Ga-PSMA ligand PET/CT. Thus, 399 patients with initial radical prostatectomy and 68Ga-PSMA ligand PET/CT during PSA relapse were retrospectively evaluated. Propensity score matching was used to create two balanced groups of 62 subjects who either did or did not receive ADT within six months before imaging. More PSMA-positive lesions and higher PSMA-derived volumetric parameters in patients with ADT suggest that a better detection rate is related to a (biologically) more advanced disease stage. Due to high detection rates in patients with PSA-levels less then 2 ng/mL, the withdrawal of ADT before PSMA ligand PET/CT cannot be recommended.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of ADT on the detection rate of 68Ga-PSMA ligand PET/CT. Thus, 399 patients with initial radical prostatectomy and 68Ga-PSMA ligand PET/CT during PSA relapse were retrospectively evaluated. Propensity score matching was used to create two balanced groups of 62 subjects who either did or did not receive ADT within six months before imaging. More PSMA-positive lesions and higher PSMA-derived volumetric parameters in patients with ADT suggest that a better detection rate is related to a (biologically) more advanced disease stage. Due to high detection rates in patients with PSA-levels less then 2 ng/mL, the withdrawal of ADT before PSMA ligand PET/CT cannot be recommended.

  • Disruption of neurite outgrowth is a marker for neurotoxicity. Persistent organic pollutants (POPs) are potential developmental neurotoxicants. We investigated their effect on neurite outgrowth in PC12 rat pheochromocytoma cells, in absence or presence of nerve growth factor (NGF), an inducer of neuronal differentiation. Cells were exposed for 72 h to a defined mixture of POPs with chemical composition and concentrations based on blood levels in the Scandinavian population. We also evaluated perfluorooctane sulfonic acid (PFOS) alone, the most abundant compound in the POP mixture. Only higher concentrations of POP mixture reduced tetrazolium salt (MTT) conversion. High-content analysis showed a decrease in cell number, but no changes for nuclear and mitochondrial cellular health parameters. Robust glutathione levels were observed in NGF-differentiated cells. Live imaging, using the IncuCyte ZOOM platform indicated ongoing cell proliferation over time, but slower in presence of NGF. The pollutants did not inhibit neuritogenesis, but rather increased NGF-induced neurite length. PFOS induced neurite outgrowth to about 50 % of the level seen with the POP mixture. Neither the POP mixture nor PFOS affected neurite length in the absence of NGF. This study focused on verifying the gender differences in the acute toxicity of LAmB and further exploring its causes. Acute toxicity study of LAmB and DAmB were performed in rats, and toxicity responses and mortality of different sexes were observed and recorded. Concentrations of AmB in rat plasma and tissues were determined by a fully validated UPLC-MS/MS assay. The results demonstrated that LAmB showed significant gender differences in acute toxicity, with more severe toxic symptoms and higher mortality for female rats at different doses, but the same differences were not observed for DAmB under the same condition. Further analysis revealed that CSE-treatment inhibited the recruitment of the ESCRT-0 component, Vps27, to the endosome surface, which is a key event is for the functioning of the ESCRT pathway. This lack of endosomal recruitment of Vps27 most likely results from a depletion of the endosomally-enriched lipid, phosphatidylinositol 3-phosphate (PI3-P), which is the target of Vps27.     To compare machine learning methods for classifying mass lesions on mammography images that use predefined image features computed over lesion segmentations to those that leverage segmentation-free representation learning on a standard, public evaluation dataset.

    We apply several classification algorithms to the public Curated Breast Imaging Subset of the Digital Database for Screening Mammography (CBIS-DDSM), in which each image contains a mass lesion. Segmentation-free representation learning techniques for classifying lesions as benign or malignant include both a Bag-of-Visual-Words (BoVW) method and a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN). We compare classification performance of these techniques to that obtained using two different segmentation-dependent approaches from the literature that rely on specific combinations of end classifiers (e.g. linear discriminant analysis, neural networks) and predefined features computed over the lesion segmentation (e.g. spiculation measure, morphological characterist specific characteristics of which can vary substantially across datasets. We further observe that segmentation-dependent methods achieve performance levels on CBIS-DDSM inferior to those achieved on the original evaluation datasets reported in the literature. Each of these findings reinforces the need for standardization of datasets, segmentation techniques, and model implementations in performance assessments of automated classifiers for medical imaging.

  • This study investigated the function of the beetle's claw for its smooth and slipless walking and designed an artificial claw open-close cycle mechanism to mimic the beetle's walking. First, the effects of claw opening and closing on beetles' ability to attach to surfaces were examined. A beetle does not have an attachment pad, and only its claws work to grip the ground; its claw opens and closes and attaches with two sharp hooks. With their claws, beetles can smoothly walk, neither slipping on nor having their claws stuck in the surface. How do they perform smooth walking with sharp claws? In this study, we observed that beetles close their claws when they raise and swung their legs forward, while they open their claws when they lowered their legs to the ground. We then conducted non-destructive tests their claws were forced open or closed. There was a significant difference in the trajectories of forced-closed claws compared to intact claws and forced-open claws. When their claws were forced-closed, this caused slippage in walking. On the other hand, when a claw was forced-open and its rotation was also inhibited, the claw stuck heavily in the surface, and the beetle could not walk. Based on these findings, we designed an artificial claw to open and close in the same cyclic manner as in the case of natural beetles. The performance of the artificial claw was consistent with the conclusions drawn from natural beetles the locomotive robot with the artificial claw smoothly moved without slippage. This is because categorical approaches are independent of the underlying neurobiological and genetic factors and cannot integrate the results of modern research, which is a big barrier of the neuroscientific development. Recent neuroscience research, with revolutionary new methods and tools and the analysis of huge databases, provides more and more information about the normal and abnormal functioning of the central nervous system. It is an enor - mous challenge to interpret these new findings, so there is a growing need to develop theoretical models that help to better understand the complexity of mental disorders and the mechanism of their development. In my paper, I summarize recent research methods related to the symptomatic heterogenity and etiological **** - ground of mental disorders and present the results of some new transdiagnostic studies, in order to illustrate the key aspects of the Research Domain Criteria (RDoC) system developed to integrate the new results. The RDoC framework helps to interpret the results of neuroscience research in a complex way and facilitates the detec - tion of differences in genotypes and (endo)phenotypes, as well as a better understanding of the pathophysiological mechanisms and developmental differences responsible for the development of mental disorders. This can mean signi ficant progress not only in renewing psychiatric nosology, but also in identifying new preventive and therapeutic targets.Tourette syndrome is a neurodevelopmental disorder that is characterized by motor and vocal tics and by alterations in the cortico-basal ganglia-thalamo-cortical (CBGTC) circuitry. The CBGTC circuitry plays an important role in procedural learning, in the acquisition of skills and habits. Tics and habits are similar phenomenologically since tics can be described as overlearned habits. Based on these characteristics, prior studies proposed enhanced pro - ce dural learning, i.e., procedural hyperfunctioning in Tourette syndrome. A growing body of evidence supports this notion. The focus of the present review article is to discuss procedural hyperfunctioning in Tourette syndrome. We aim to shed light on a cognitive advantage in Tourette syndrome and to draw attention to the notion that pathologies and developmental disorder can be characterized not only with impairments and cognitive dysfunctions but with enhanced functions as well.
    The fifth edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders has included nonsuicidal self-injury (NSSI) as a proposed independent diagnostic category, emphasizing the nonsuicidal nature of the phenomenon. Nevertheless, this terminology and concept have provoked a still ongoing scientific debate among researchers and clinicians.

    By extending a systematic search with a broader focus on the prevalence and psychopathological correlates of NSSI, the aim of the present study is to explore the relationships between NSSI and suicidal behavior.

    A systematic literature search was conducted in five databases (PubMed, OVID Medline, OVID PsycINFO, Scopus, Web of Science) with the search terms "NSSI" and "prevalence" and "mental disorder" or "psychiatric disorder".     A total of 25 papers examined the relationship betwen the publications reviewed, significant suicidal risk is associated with NSSI in both adolescence and adulthood. This risk may be even higher in the presence of certain comorbid disorders and other psychosocial factors as well as in the presence of certain NSSI patterns such as repetitiveness or multiple NSSI methods.The COVID-19 epidemic was declared a pandemic by the World Health Organization on 11 March 2020. The outbreak and spread of the disease has caused fear, insecurity and anxiety in people around the world. The pan - de ****has both direct and indirect effects on mental health problems, as fear of the virus can trigger or exacerbate mental illness and influence the onset of symptoms. Case studies suggest that this emergency can affect the content of delusions and hallucinations, as well as contribute to psychotic relapse. In addition to a brief review of the literature, we describe the case of three psychotic patients of the Jahn Ferenc South Pest Hospital, Centre for Psychiatry and Addiction Medicine, whose delusions and hallucinations were affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. In two cases, the symptoms of a reactive, transient psychotic episode presumably provoked by psychosocial stressors were determined, and in one case, the positive symptoms of a patient suffering in a psychotic disorder were determined by COVID-19.

Most economies that are prospecting on biodiversity for improved bio-economy favor renewable resources over synthetics for the potential opportunity they hold. However, this field is still nascent as the bulk of the available resources are non-renewable based. Microbial metabolites, emphasis on secondary metabolites, are viable alternatives; nonetheless, vast microbial resources remain under-exploited; thus, the need for a continuum in the search for new products or bio-modifying existing products for novel functions through an efficient approach. Environmental distress syndrome has been identified as a factor that influences the emergence of genetic diversity in prokaryotes. Still, the process of how the change comes about is poorly understood. The emergence of new traits may present a high prospect for the industrially viable organism. Microbial enzymes have prominence in the bio-economic space, and luding animal hide processing, detergent formulation, cosmetics, livestock feed, and organic fertilizer production, were also articulated.The continuing emergence and development of pathogenic microorganisms that are resistant to antibiotics constitute an increasing global concern, and the effort in new antimicrobials discovery will remain relevant until a lasting solution is found. A new bacterial strain, designated JFL21, was isolated from seafood and identified as B. amyloliquefaciens. The antimicrobial substance produced by B. amyloliquefaciens JFL21 showed low toxicity to most probiotics but exhibited strong antimicrobial activities against multidrug-resistant foodborne pathogens. The partially purified antimicrobial substance, Anti-JFL21, was characterized to be a multiple lipopeptides mixture comprising the families of surfactin, fengycin, and iturin. Compared with commercially available polymyxin B and Nisin, Anti-JFL21 not only could exhibit a wider and stronger antibacterial activity toward Gram-positive pathogens but also inhibit the growth of a majority of fungal pathogens. After further separation through gel filtration chromatography (GFC), the family of surfactin, fengycin, and iturin were obtained, respectively. The results of the antimicrobial test pointed out that only fengycin family presented marked antimicrobial properties against the indicators of L. monocytogenes, A. hydrophila, and C. gloeosporioides, which demonstrated that fengycins might play a major role in the antibacterial and antifungal activity of Anti-JFL21. In the absence of tpo3 and/or dur3, the levels of cytoplasmic polyamines had a moderate increase, which enhanced the tolerance of A. fumigatus to ITC. In comparison, overexpression of tpo3 or dur3 induced a drastic increase in polyamines, which increased the sensitivity of A. fumigatus to ITC. Further analysis revealed that polyamines concentration-dependently affected the susceptibility of A.

Microbial metabolites, emphasis on secondary metabolites, are viable alternatives; nonetheless, vast microbial resources remain under-exploited; thus, the need for a continuum in the search for new products or bio-modifying existing products for novel functions through an efficient approach. Environmental distress syndrome has been identified as a factor that influences the emergence of genetic diversity in prokaryotes. Still, the process of how the change comes about is poorly understood. The emergence of new traits may present a high prospect for the industrially viable organism. Microbial enzymes have prominence in the bio-economic space, and luding animal hide processing, detergent formulation, cosmetics, livestock feed, and organic fertilizer production, were also articulated.The continuing emergence and development of pathogenic microorganisms that are resistant to antibiotics constitute an increasing global concern, and the effort in new antimicrobials discovery will remain relevant until a lasting solution is found. Compared with commercially available polymyxin B and Nisin, Anti-JFL21 not only could exhibit a wider and stronger antibacterial activity toward Gram-positive pathogens but also inhibit the growth of a majority of fungal pathogens. After further separation through gel filtration chromatography (GFC), the family of surfactin, fengycin, and iturin were obtained, respectively.
