Attenuation correction (AC) is crucial for ensuring the quantitative accuracy of positron emission tomography (PET) imaging. However, obtaining accurate μ-maps from brain-dedicated PET scanners without AC acquisition mechanism is challenging. Therefore, to overcome these problems, we developed a deep learning-based PET AC (deep AC) framework to synthesize transmission computed tomography (TCT) images from non-AC (NAC) PET images using a convolutional neural network (CNN) with a huge dataset of various radiotracers for brain PET imaging.

Nanoparticle albumin-bound paclitaxel (nab-PTX), a novel taxane formulation, was developed to avoid cremophor/ethanol-associated toxicities including peripheral neuropathy and hypersensitivity. At least 35 phase II studies using combined nab-PTX and anthracycline in neoadjuvant settings are registered in Japan. We analyzed the efficacy and safety of nab-PTX based on patient characteristics in these studies.
We conducted a meta-analysis using individual patient data (IPD) to investigate the average efficacy of nab-PTX-containing regimens as neoadjuvant chemotherapy for operable breast cancer. IPD were provided by principal investigators who agreed to participate. The primary endpoint was pathological complete response (pCR) rate of each breast cancer subtype.
We analyzed the data of 16 studies involving 753 patients. The overall crude frequencies of pCR (ypT0 ypN0, ypT0/is ypN0, and ypT0/is ypNX) were 18.1, 26.0, and 28.6%, respectively. Specifically, the frequencies were 6.7, 10.2, and 13.4% for luminal (n = 343); 40.5, 63.5, and 68.9% for human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2)-rich, (n = 74); 21.9, 40.6, and 42.7% for luminal/HER2 (n = 96); and 26.3, 31.5, and 32.3% for triple-negative breast cancers (TNBC) (n = 232). The multivariate analyses indicated that HER2 positivity, TNBC, high Ki-67, high nuclear grade, and weekly nab-PTX administration were significantly associated with the pCR. The proportion of hematological toxicities (neutropenia (39.7%) and leukopenia (22.5%)), peripheral sensory neuropathy (9.7%), myalgia (5.7%), and arthralgia (4.7%) was higher than grade 3 adverse events, but most patients recovered.

To explore the capability of three-dimensional double-echo steady state with water excitation sequence (3D-DESS-WE) to determine the intraorbital ocular motor nerves (IOMN).
A 3.0T scanner was applied to investigate 30 healthy volunteers based on the 3D-DESS-WE sequence. Dunnett t test was conducted to evaluate the signal intensity (SI) of the left oculomotor nerve (CNIII), frontal white matter, cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), and lateral rectus (LR). The oculomotor nerve's detectability, trochlear nerve (CNIV), and abducens nerve (CNVI) were evaluated independently by two observers. The average assessment scores were determined, and interobserver variability for these nerves' detectability was determined using a weighted kappa analysis.
The SI of CNIII is similar to that of the frontal white matter (t = 2.26, P > 0.05), lower than the CSF, and higher than the LR (t = 3.81, - 3.45, P < 0.05). The average scores of the superior division of CNIII and the branch to medial rectus (MR), inferior rectus (IR), inferior oblique (IO), CNIV, and CNVI were 3.01, 3.07, 3.78, 2.98, 2.88, and 3.97, respectively. The interobserver variability was excellent (κ = 0.83-1.00).

Diosmetin (Dio), a natural flavonoid obtained from citrus fruits, has been shown to have anti-tumor effects in lung, liver, and skin cancers. We aimed to investigate the effects of Dio on ovarian cancer A2780 and SKOV3 cells along with the underlying mechanisms. Our data showed that Dio inhibited the proliferation, migration, and invasion of these cells and induced their apoptosis. Moreover, Dio upregulated the levels of Bax and cleaved Caspase-3 and PARP while downregulating the level of Bcl2. Mechanistically, our results revealed that Dio inhibited Nrf2 and induced the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS). The ROS scavenger N-acetyl-L-cysteine (NAC) suppressed the inhibitory effect of Dio on the proliferation of the ovarian cancer cells. Additionally, overexpression of Nrf2 partially suppressed the Dio-induced apoptosis and proliferation inhibition in these cells. These findings indicate that Dio exerts an anti-tumor activity by upregulating ROS levels and inhibiting Nrf2, indicating that Dio is a promising chemotherapeutic candidate for the treatment of ovarian cancer.

Understanding the factors that contribute to women's alcohol use in pregnancy is critical to supporting women's health and wellness and preventing Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder. A systematic review of qualitative studies involving pregnant and recently postpartum women was undertaken to understand the barriers and facilitators that influence alcohol use in pregnancy (PROSPERO CRD42018098831). Twenty-seven (n = 27) articles were identified through EMBASE, CINAHL, PsycINFO, PubMed and Web of Science. The included articles were thematically analyzed using NVivo12. The analysis was informed by Canada's Action Framework for Building an Inclusive Health System to articulate the ways in which stigma and related barriers are enacted at the individual, interpersonal, institutional and population levels. Five themes impacting women's alcohol use, abstention and reduction were identified (1) social relationships and norms; (2) stigma; (3) trauma and other stressors; (4) alcohol information and messaging; and (5) access to trusted equitable care and essential resources. The impact of structural and systemic factors on prenatal alcohol use was largely absent in the included studies, instead focusing on individual choice. This silence risks perpetuating stigma and highlights the criticality of addressing intersecting structural and systemic factors in supporting maternal and fetal health.We present a novel method for the computation of well-defined optimized atomic partial charges and radii from the total electron density. Our method is based on a two-step radical Voronoi tessellation of the (possibly periodic) system and subsequent integration of the total electron density within each Voronoi cell. First, the total electron density is partitioned into the contributions of each molecule, and subsequently the electron density within each molecule is assigned to the individual atoms using a second set of atomic radii for the radical Voronoi tessellation. The radii are optimized on-the-fly to minimize the fluctuation (variance) of molecular and atomic charges. Therefore, our method is completely free of empirical parameters. As a by-product, two sets of optimized atomic radii are produced in each run, which take into account many specific properties of the system investigated. This blood pressure (BP)-lowering effect was attributed to the presence of flavanols and anthocyanins. In this context, phenolic-enriched wine lees (PWL) could potentially exhibit a stronger bioactivity. Therefore, the aim of this study was to obtain a soluble fraction of WL with increased phenolic content and evaluate its functionality. The PWL were obtained using an enzyme-assisted extraction based on the hydrolysis of WL proteins with Flavourzyme®. They contained 57.20% more total phenolic compounds than WL, with anthocyanins and flavanols being the largest families present. In addition, PWL also showed greater angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitory and antioxidant activities. Finally, the antihypertensive activity of the PWL was evaluated in spontaneously hypertensive rats. A single dose of 5 mL/kg body weight of PWL showed a greater BP-lowering effect than the one shown by WL. Moreover, this antihypertensive effect was more prolonged than the one produced by the antihypertensive drug Captopril. These results demonstrate that enzymatic protein hydrolysis is a useful method to maximize the extraction of phenolic compounds from WL and to obtain extracts with enhanced functionalities.Microwaves are a highly utilized electromagnetic wave, used across a range of industries including food processing, communications, in the development of novel medical treatments and biosensor diagnostics. Microwaves have known thermal interactions and theorized non-thermal interactions with living matter; however, there is significant debate as to the mechanisms of action behind these interactions and the potential benefits and limitations of their use. This review summarizes the current knowledge surrounding the implementation of microwave technologies within the medical industry.Multiple myeloma (MM) is characterized by extensive immunoglobulin production leading to an excessive load on protein homeostasis in tumor cells. Aminopeptidases contribute to proteolysis by catalyzing the hydrolysis of amino acids from proteins or peptides and function downstream of the ubiquitin-proteasome pathway. Notably, aminopeptidases can be utilized in the delivery of antibody and peptide-conjugated drugs, such as melflufen, currently in clinical trials. We analyzed the expression of 39 aminopeptidase genes in MM samples from 122 patients treated at Finnish cancer centers and 892 patients from the CoMMpass database. Based on ranked abundance, LAP3, ERAP2, METAP2, TTP2, and DPP7 were highly expressed in MM. ERAP2, XPNPEP1, DPP3, RNPEP, and CTSV were differentially expressed between relapsed/refractory and newly diagnosed MM samples (p less then 0.05). Sensitivity to melflufen was detected ex vivo in 11/15 MM patient samples, and high sensitivity was observed, especially in relapsed/refractory samples.

Thus, our findings indicate that a functional CaV1 channel is necessary for constitutive K+ secretion observed in isolated preparations of lepidopteran MTs. Our findings suggest that epithelia may rely on CaV channels to enable robust ion secretion and downregulation of CaV channels, together with other transcriptional changes, enables ion reabsorption.Stress-induced phosphoprotein 1 (STIP1) plays an important role in cancer tumorigenesis and progression. However, the role of STIP1 in colorectal cancer (CRC) remains unclear. This study aimed to explore clinical significance, biological function and potential molecular mechanism of STIP1 in CRC. Immunohistochemistry (IHC) and Western bolt were performed to detect STIP1 protein level in CRC and adjacent normal tissues. DLD1 and HCT116 cell lines were treated with shSTIP1, cell proliferation was detected by CCK8 and colony formation assays, and cell migration and invasion were detected by wound healing and transwell assays. Moreover, western blot and immunofluorescence assays were performed to explore the potential molecular mechanism of STIP1 in the progression of CRC. We found that STIP1 expression in CRC tissues was significantly higher than in adjacent normal tissues. High STIP1 expression was associated with poor overall survival (OS) in CRC patients. Furthermore, secreted STIP1 promoted CRC cell proliferation and invasion through STAT3 signaling pathway, while STIP1 knockdown inhibited the proliferation, migration and invasion of CRC cells. Mechanistically, STIP1 knockdown suppressed the activation of STAT3 signaling pathway in CRC. We evaluated the impact of postmastectomy radiotherapy (PMRT) or supraclavicular radiation therapy (SCV RT) in women with cT1-3N1 breast cancer (**) who became node negative (ypN0) after neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NAC).
We retrospectively reviewed 485 women treated with NAC for ** between 2005 and 2019. Radiation treatment fields were reviewed in detail. Pathologic complete response (pCR) was defined as ypT0/Tis ypN0. Patients who had residual nodal disease were defined as ypN+. Those who achieved complete response in the lymph nodes but not in the breast were defined as ypT+ypN0.

This review aims to update clinicians on the mechanism, diagnosis, and treatment of opioid-related sleep-disordered breathing in order to improve the quality of care for patients with chronic pain.Recent attentional capture studies with the spatial cueing paradigm often found that target-dissimilar precues resulted in longer RTs on valid than invalid cue trials. These same location costs were accompanied by a contralateral positivity over posterior electrodes from 200 to 300 ms, similar to a PD component. Same location costs and the PD have been linked to the inhibition of cues with a unique feature (singleton cues) that do not match the target feature. In some studies reporting same location costs, the cue was surrounded by other cues (i.e., the context cues) that matched the physical or relative feature of the target. We hypothesized that the context cues might have captured attention and might have elicited data patterns that mimicked the inhibitory effects. To disentangle inhibition of the singleton cue from capture by the context cues, we added gray cues to the cue array, which we considered neutral because gray matched neither the target nor the nontarget color. In four experiments, the results consistently showed that the context cues in the nonmatching cue condition captured attention, as reflected in shorter RTs compared to neutral cues and a substantial N2pc to lateralized context cues. Surveillance can be initiated in infants, children and adolescents with a tumor known or suspected of being related to a cancer predisposition syndrome or where genetic testing identifies a germline pathogenic gene variant in an asymptomatic child. Pre-symptomatic detection of malignant neoplasms offers potential to improve treatment options and survival outcomes, but the benefits and risks of screening need to be weighed, particularly with variable penetrance in many cancer predisposition syndromes. In this review we discuss the benefits and risks of surveillance imaging and the importance of integrating imaging and non-imaging screening elements. We explore the principles of surveillance imaging with particular reference to whole-body MRI, considering the strategies to minimize false-negative and manage false-positive whole-body MRI results, the value of standardized nomenclature when reporting risk stratification to better guide patient management, and the need for timely communication of results to allay anxiety. This gene together with the feoB gene is part of the feo operon which encodes a ferrous uptake system (FeoAB). The mutant strain exhibited higher oxidative stress supported by a high concentration of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and low levels of reduced glutathione (GSH) in the presence of metals. The iron supplementation of the growth medium reverted the growth inhibition of the mutant strain caused by Ga and In, significantly reduced the ROS amounts in mutant cells grown in all conditions, and increased its GSH/total glutathione ratio to values similar to those of the native strain.
Finally, pathways analysis showed that these metabolites (such as lactate and pyruvate) were mainly enriched in pathways like disorders of the Krebs cycle. Combining with the transcriptomic and metabolomics data, we found that lactate, pyruvate, WASF3, RAB7B, and METTL7A might be used as novel biomarkers and potential therapeutic targets for BC. The age-dependency represents a striking new aspect of these phenotypes und highlights a pivotal role for P/Q channels in the development of the central nervous system in a defined time window. While several reviews addressed the clinical presentation and treatment of FHM1 and EA2, an overview of the newly described age-dependent manifestations is lacking. In this Mini-Review we present a clinical update, delineate genotype-phenotype correlations as well as summarize evidence on the pathophysiological mechanisms underlying the expanded phenotype associated with CACNA1A variants.Background Moyamoya angiopathy (MMA), which includes moyamoya disease (MMD) and moyamoya syndrome (MMS), is an uncommon cerebrovascular condition characterized by recurrent stroke. We carried out a bibliometric analysis to examine the development of and research trends in MMA research. Methods Studies published between 2010 and 2019 on MMA were retrieved from the Web of Science Core Collection (WoSCC) on August 14, 2020, and bibliometric and visualization-based analyses were performed by using three different scientometric tools HistCite, VOSviewer, and CiteSpace. Results A total of 1,896 publications published in 384 journals by 6,744 authors, 1,641 institutions and 56 countries/regions were included in the analyses. Annual publication outputs increased from 2010 to 2019. The USA, Japan and China were three key contributors to this study field. Capital Medical University, Seoul National University, and Stanford University were three major institutions with larger numbers of publications. Zhang D, World Neurosurgery, Kuroda S, and STROKE were the most prolific author, prolific journal, top co-cited author and top co-cited journal, respectively. The top five keywords during this period were moyamoya disease, revascularization, stroke, children and surgery, while revascularization surgery and RNF213 were the most common frontier topics. Conclusions In this study, the research trends of global scientific research on MMA over the past decade were systematically analyzed. However, some studies have suggested that it may have adverse effects on patients' neurocognitive function. To clarify this operation's effect on neurocognitive function, we collected studies containing neurocognitive function evaluation for qualitative and quantitative analysis. Methods We searched relevant clinical studies through Pubmed and Embase databases and extracted and sorted out information such as sample size, post-operative scores, pre-operative and post-operative evaluation interval, PD course, and exclusion criteria, from articles meeting the standards. The magnitude and variance of the DBS group's combined effects and the drug therapy group in each neurocognitive domain were calculated and analyzed by the random-effects model. Results Compared with the drug treatment group, the verbal fluency of patients in the experimental group was significantly decreased at least moderately (ES = -0.553), in which the phonemic fluency declines greatly (ES = -0.842), learning and memory ability was slightly decreased (ES = -0.305), and other neurocognitive functions were not significantly decreased. Conclusion STN-DBS can affect verbal fluency and damage learning and memory. https://www.selleckchem.com/ There was no significant correlation between the above effects and disease progression itself, and it was more likely to be associated with STN-DBS. An epilepsy protocol was used for the acquisition of the 7T MRI. Prospective visual analysis of 7T MRI was performed by an experienced board-certified neuroradiologist and communicated to the patient management team. The clinical significance of the additional 7T findings was assessed by intracranial EEG (ICEEG) ictal onset, surgical resection, post-operative seizure outcome and histopathology. A subset of lesions were demarked with arrows for subsequent, retrospective comparison between 3T and 7T by 7 neuroradiologists using a artifacts were encountered at 7T (p less then 0.001). Significance For patients with 3T-visible lesions, 7T MRI may better elucidate the extent of multifocal abnormalities such as PVNH and PMG, providing potential targets to improve ICEEG implantation. Motor skill acquisition was calculated as the difference of scores between block 6 and block 2 for both outcomes. Sleep was assessed subjectively using Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) and objectively using the Actisleep. To assess sleep related biomarker, plasma serotonin level was examined.

Aim This study was conducted to evaluate the impact of health promotion interventions on early childhood caries prevention in 2-5 year-olds receiving dental treatment under general anesthesia. Materials and Methods Thirty-seven mother-child couples presenting to the clinic of the Dental School of Tehran University of Medical Sciences for treatment under general anesthesia were randomly divided to two groups 19 couples in the pamphlet and fluoride varnish four times a year, and 18 couples in the pamphlet plus six phone call reminders and fluoride varnish four times a year. A standard questionnaire on demographics and children oral health-related practice of parents was completed by respondents. On children's oral examination, the Simplified Oral Hygiene Index (OHI-S), dmft, and the presence of new white spot lesions (WS) were recorded in both phases. At the final stage, Early Childhood Oral Health Impact Scale (ECOHIS) was completed by parents. The length of follow-up was 24 months. Results In both groups, thever, in the reminder group, the mothers' perception of their perceived ability to make children brush their teeth twice a day was improved. Other aspects of innate immunity may also be abnormal and contribute to the increased morbidity and warrant further interrogation such as gamma delta T cell function, the inflammasome, Toll-like receptors and their pathways. Pharmacotherapies such as pavilizumab, pneumococcal and influenza immunizations, as well as potential immunoprophylactic agents such as pidotimod, azithromycin and Broncho-Vaxom may help alleviate the infectious consequences. Clinically, patients with Myhre syndrome manifest with defects of connective tissue (skin, muscles, joints), and cardiovascular and neurological impairment. In our report, we present a case of a 16-year-old female with skeletal abnormalities, reduced articular mobility, skin, and muscular hypertrophy and cardiovascular defects characteristic of Myhre syndrome. Long-term pulmonary hypertension and arterial hypertension were persistent in spite of antihypertensive treatment. Our patient was also diagnosed with chronic kidney disease and Dunbar syndrome, which is an external compression of the coeliac trunk or coeliac artery by the surrounding tissues. Until now, only a few cases of renal complications in Myhre syndrome have been published. We describe for the first time a female patient with genetically confirmed Myhre syndrome caused by the p.Ile500Val SMAD4 mutation presenting with an unusual occurrence of congenital vesicoureteral reflux, proteinuria with a decreased renal function, and a condition recognized as Dunbar syndrome. UGDH is critical to the production of extracellular matrix components which are essential to the migration and connectivity of neurons early in human brain development. In this report, we describe one child of a consanguineous family who presented with distinct clinical features including global developmental delay, axial hypotonia, bilateral undescended testis, and subtle dysmorphic features. Whole genome sequencing and a segregation was performed to identify the genetic cause of the disease within the family. Though mutations in the UGDH protein have been described as causing developmental delay in various model organisms, to our knowledge, this is the first identification of the novel homozygous missense variant in exon8 of UGDH NM_003359.3 c.950 G>A (p.Arg317Gln) and most likely the cause of the patient's phenotype. This variant falls in an active region and replaces the highly conserved Arginine 317 residues across mammals. Surgery has to be performed early to avoid life-threatening complications. Prenatal diagnosis of this defect is challenging. We report a case of ALVT diagnosed in a fetus showing premature severe cardiac failure at 24 GA. The new born was operated at day 3 of life with good results. Two years later, he is still doing well recovering a complete normal cardiac function. ALVT should be suggested in front of any fetal cardiac failure. Its incidence, reaching as high as 10 cases per 1000 live births in the less developed countries, prompts the need for better awareness and prevention of cases at risk, together with management by easily applicable protocols. PA acts first and foremost on the nervous tissue, but also on the heart, by hypoxia and subsequent ischemia-reperfusion injury. Myocardial development at birth is still incomplete and cannot adequately respond to this aggression. Cardiac dysfunction, including low ventricular output, bradycardia, and pulmonary hypertension, complicates the already compromised circulatory status of the newborn with PA. Multiorgan and especially cardiovascular failure seem to play a crucial role in the secondary phase of hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) and its high mortality rate. Hypothermia is an acceptable solution for HIE, but there is a fragile equilibrium between therapeutic gain and cardiovascular instability.

Materials and Methods Thirty-seven mother-child couples presenting to the clinic of the Dental School of Tehran University of Medical Sciences for treatment under general anesthesia were randomly divided to two groups 19 couples in the pamphlet and fluoride varnish four times a year, and 18 couples in the pamphlet plus six phone call reminders and fluoride varnish four times a year. A standard questionnaire on demographics and children oral health-related practice of parents was completed by respondents. On children's oral examination, the Simplified Oral Hygiene Index (OHI-S), dmft, and the presence of new white spot lesions (WS) were recorded in both phases. At the final stage, Early Childhood Oral Health Impact Scale (ECOHIS) was completed by parents. The length of follow-up was 24 months. Results In both groups, thever, in the reminder group, the mothers' perception of their perceived ability to make children brush their teeth twice a day was improved. Clinically, patients with Myhre syndrome manifest with defects of connective tissue (skin, muscles, joints), and cardiovascular and neurological impairment. In our report, we present a case of a 16-year-old female with skeletal abnormalities, reduced articular mobility, skin, and muscular hypertrophy and cardiovascular defects characteristic of Myhre syndrome. Long-term pulmonary hypertension and arterial hypertension were persistent in spite of antihypertensive treatment. Our patient was also diagnosed with chronic kidney disease and Dunbar syndrome, which is an external compression of the coeliac trunk or coeliac artery by the surrounding tissues. Until now, only a few cases of renal complications in Myhre syndrome have been published. We describe for the first time a female patient with genetically confirmed Myhre syndrome caused by the p.Ile500Val SMAD4 mutation presenting with an unusual occurrence of congenital vesicoureteral reflux, proteinuria with a decreased renal function, and a condition recognized as Dunbar syndrome. In this report, we describe one child of a consanguineous family who presented with distinct clinical features including global developmental delay, axial hypotonia, bilateral undescended testis, and subtle dysmorphic features. Whole genome sequencing and a segregation was performed to identify the genetic cause of the disease within the family. Though mutations in the UGDH protein have been described as causing developmental delay in various model organisms, to our knowledge, this is the first identification of the novel homozygous missense variant in exon8 of UGDH NM_003359.3 c.950 G>A (p.Arg317Gln) and most likely the cause of the patient's phenotype. This variant falls in an active region and replaces the highly conserved Arginine 317 residues across mammals. Surgery has to be performed early to avoid life-threatening complications. Prenatal diagnosis of this defect is challenging. We report a case of ALVT diagnosed in a fetus showing premature severe cardiac failure at 24 GA. The new born was operated at day 3 of life with good results. Two years later, he is still doing well recovering a complete normal cardiac function. ALVT should be suggested in front of any fetal cardiac failure. Thanks to early diagnosis, prompt neonatal management can be organized and allows positive outcome. Its incidence, reaching as high as 10 cases per 1000 live births in the less developed countries, prompts the need for better awareness and prevention of cases at risk, together with management by easily applicable protocols. PA acts first and foremost on the nervous tissue, but also on the heart, by hypoxia and subsequent ischemia-reperfusion injury. Myocardial development at birth is still incomplete and cannot adequately respond to this aggression. Cardiac dysfunction, including low ventricular output, bradycardia, and pulmonary hypertension, complicates the already compromised circulatory status of the newborn with PA. Multiorgan and especially cardiovascular failure seem to play a crucial role in the secondary phase of hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) and its high mortality rate. Debates about the ethics of health care and medical research in contemporary pluralistic democracies often arise partly from competing religious and secular values. Such disagreements raise challenges of balancing claims of religious liberty with claims to equal treatment in health care. This paper proposes several mid-level principles to help in framing sound policies for resolving such disputes. We develop and illustrate these principles, exploring their application to conscientious objection by religious providers and religious institutions, accommodation of religious priorities in biomedical research, and treatment of patients' religious views in doctor-patient encounters. Given that no sound set of guiding principles yields precise solutions for every policy dispute, we explore how morally sound democracies might deliberatively resolve such policy issues, following our proposed principles. https://www.selleckchem.com/products/azd5305.html Taken together and carefully interpreted, these principles may help in guiding difficult decision making in the indefinitely large realm where government, medical providers, and patients encounter problems concerning religion and medicine.
Oxidative stress is the most common factor mediating environmental chemical-induced health adversities. Recently, an exponential rise in the use of phytochemicals as an alternative therapeutics against oxidative stress-mediated diseases has been documented. Due to their free radical quenching property, plant-derived natural products have gained substantial attention as a therapeutic agent in environmental toxicology. The present review aimed to describe the therapeutic role of phytochemicals in mitigating environmental toxicant-mediated sub-cellular and organ toxicities via controlling cellular antioxidant response.
The present review has covered the recently related studies, mainly focussing on the free radical scavenging role of phytochemicals in environmental toxicology.
In vitro and in vivo studies have reported that supplementation of antioxidant-rich compounds can ameliorate the toxicant-induced oxidative stress, thereby improving the health conditions. Improving the cellular antioxidant pool has been considered as a mode of action of phytochemicals. However, the other cellular targets of phytochemicals remain uncertain.
Knowing the therapeutic value of phytochemicals to mitigate the chemical-induced toxicity is an initial stage; mechanistic understanding needs to decipher for development as therapeutics. Consequently, Musca domestica (L.) (Diptera Muscidae) and the Salivary Gland Hypertrophy Virus (MdSGHV) serve as a model to study insect vectoring of viruses. A better understanding of the structural changes of the salivary glands by the virus will help obtain a better picture of the pathological impact the virus has on adult flies. The salivary glands are a primary route for viruses to enter a new host. As such, studying the viral effect on the salivary glands is particularly important and can provide insights for the development of strategies to control the transmission of vector-borne diseases, such as dengue, malaria, Zika, and chikungunya virus. Using scanning and transmission electron microscopic techniques, researchers have shown the effects of infection by MdSGHV on the salivary glands; however, the exact location where the infection was found is unclear. For this reason, this study did a close examination of the effects of the hypertrophy virus on the salivary glands to locate the specific sites of infection. Here, we report that hypertrophy is present mainly in the secretory region, while other regions appeared unaffected. Moreover, there is a disruption of the cuticular, chitinous lining that separates the secretory cells from the lumen of the internal duct, and the disturbance of this lining makes it possible for the virus to enter the lumen. Thus, we report that the chitinous lining acts as an exit barrier of the salivary gland.The coffee berry borer (CBB), Hypothenemus hampei Ferrari (Coleoptera Curculionidae), is the most important coffee pest in most of the coffee growing countries. CBB females leave old dry berries after harvest and search for dry noninfested berries on the plant or on the ground to lay eggs or to use as refuge until new berries are available on the coffee trees in the following season. The CBB infestation level and emergence from berries on the ground or on the plants were evaluated in two fields post-harvest in the Spring in Brazil over two seasons. Twenty infested or noninfested berries in separate cages (250 ml plastic cups) were placed on the plants or on the ground under the tree canopy, in each field. The number of infested berries and CBB females that emerged from the infested berries were recorded weekly. CBB emergence was higher from berries on the ground than those on the coffee trees in both seasons, whereas CBB infestation was higher on coffee berries on the plants than those on the ground in season I. Insolation (hours of sunlight) and temperature were the main covariates that affected emergence and infestation by this insect. The results are discussed for monitoring CBB during the time of dispersal with implications on integrated management of this pest.Sugarcane spittlebugs are considered important pests in sugarcane crops ranging from the southeastern United States to northern Argentina. To evaluate the effects of climate variables on adult populations of Aeneolamia varia (Fabricius) (Hemiptera Cercopidae), a 3-yr monitoring study was carried out in sugarcane fields at week-long intervals during the rainy season (May to November 2005-2007). The resulting data were analyzed using the univariate Forest-Genetic method. The best predictive model explained 75.8% variability in physiological damage threshold. It predicted that the main climatic factors influencing the adult population would be, in order of importance, evaporation; evapotranspiration by 0.5; evapotranspiration, cloudiness at 200 p.m.; average sunshine and relative humidity at 800 a.m. The optimization of the predictive model established that the lower and upper limits of the climatic variables produced a threshold in the population development rate of 184 to 267 adult insects under the agroecological conditions of the study area.
